Hunt Slonem: Wonderland Reimagined Wonderland Reimagined marks both a beginning and a continuation. As the first exhibition of the new year—and the inaugural presentation following the merger of New River Fine Art and Evan Lurie Gallery—this exhibition signals a new chapter defined by shared vision, expanded dialogue, and a renewed commitment to presenting exceptional contemporary artists. It is fitting that this moment is ushered in by Hunt Slonem, an artist whose work embodies transformation, wonder, and joyful excess. In Wonderland Reimagined, Slonem presents an entirely new body of work that revisits his iconic visual language while pushing it into fresh, immersive territory. His exuberant depictions of birds, butterflies, and fantastical creatures are rendered with heightened color, rhythm, and texture, inviting viewers into a world that feels at once familiar and newly enchanted. These works celebrate abundance and repetition, not as restraint, but as freedom—each image alive with motion, pattern, and possibility. Slonem’s practice has long balanced reverence for art history with an unmistakably contemporary spirit. In this exhibition, that balance is felt in every brushstroke. The works embrace whimsy without sacrificing rigor, offering moments of delight while rewarding close, sustained looking. Wonderland Reimagined is not an escape from reality, but an expansion of it—an invitation to see the world through a lens of color, vitality, and optimism. Artist Bio Hunt Slonem (b. 1951, Kittery, Maine) is an internationally celebrated American painter whose work is instantly recognizable for its vibrant color, rhythmic repetition, and exuberant subject matter. Best known for his iconic depictions of tropical birds, butterflies, and lush botanical forms, Slonem has developed a visual language that bridges contemporary abstraction with natural history, ornament, and myth. After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Skidmore College, Slonem moved to New York City in the 1970s, where he became associated with the Neo-Expressionist movement. His early experiences working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—where he assisted in the conservation department—deeply influenced his approach to composition, materiality, and historical reference. These influences continue to inform his layered surfaces and reverence for repetition as both structure and meditation. Slonem’s paintings are distinguished by their dynamic brushwork and intricate surfaces, often built through repeated motifs that transform individual images into immersive fields of color and movement. His work explores themes of abundance, memory, and the passage of time, inviting viewers into worlds that feel simultaneously celebratory and contemplative. In addition to his painting practice, Slonem is an accomplished sculptor and printmaker, and an avid preservationist of historic architecture. He has restored and maintains several historic homes in Louisiana and New York, many of which serve as living extensions of his artistic vision. Slonem’s work has been exhibited extensively in museums and galleries worldwide and is included in numerous public and private collections. His paintings are held by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National Gallery of Art, among many others. His work has also been collected by prominent private collectors and cultural figures across the globe. Through decades of prolific output, Hunt Slonem has remained dedicated to creating art that celebrates beauty, vitality, and wonder—hallmarks that continue to define his enduring influence in contemporary art.

Throughout the last few years, I have begun a bold and exciting exploration, utilizing new mediums to further study and admire the divinity of animal spirits and muses of varying forms. My long-established painting practice continues to inform this novel undertaking, and my strong atitude toward color and reverance for the mystivism of nature can be always witnessed in my art. ”
