Annual enrollment begins today, April 23, and runs through May 4. This is a once-ayear opportunity for employees to enroll in or review benefits. This year, employees can take advantage of a new interactive website at myalex.com/hii/2018 to help them make the right benefits choices for their families.

Nonrepresented employees should be sure to update their tobacco-use status during annual enrollment. This year, all nonrepresented employees' tobacco-use statuses will be reset to "tobacco user." In order to receive the preferred "tobacco-free" insurance rate (saving $660 a year), employees must update their tobacco-use status under the medical section of the enrollment hub online, or call the Huntington Ingalls Benefits Center (HIBC). Employees who do not update their tobacco-use status will be defaulted to "tobacco user" and pay the standard medical insurance rates starting July 1. NNS Recognizes Earth Day Dozens of shipbuilders and their families supported Earth Day by helping clean up the grounds on the outskirts of Newport News Shipbuilding on April 18. Earth Day is an annual celebration in which events are held around the world to show appreciation for the environment. Volunteers spread mulch around trees at Christopher Newport Park and picked up trash along the nearby beach. Trash mainly included plastic, glass and paper products. Volunteers collected items in trash bags, later disposing them with the help of Newport News Shipbuilding’s Environmental Engineering team. “I really enjoy the event because it gives shipbuilders an opportunity to come together as a team and make the area we work in better,” said Nuclear Engineer Cailee Helmick (E86). Volunteers received an Earth Day T-shirt, a reusable bag and saplings to plant in their own yards.

Changes to NNS' Internal Shuttle Service Begin April 30 Beginning Monday, April 30, Newport News Shipbuilding’s internal shuttle service will be reduced by two shuttles to accommodate various transportation needs across the shipyard, including a new service to transport interviewees to and from the Employment Office. The company will continue to support the internal shuttle services with eight buses during the peak traffic times. The internal shuttle route will remain the same, however, the cycle time for internal routes will take approximately 10 minutes longer. As a result, employees utilizing internal shuttle services should allow additional time to get to and from their destination, especially during peak travel times. “We have found that more employees are preferring to walk with the nicer weather, so we do not anticipate the reduction of internal shuttle services to cause major inconveniences,” said Facilities Manager... Shipbuilders, Families Attend iDS Open House Newport News Shipbuilding employees and their families had the opportunity to learn more about the shipyard’s digital transition during an Integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) Open House Saturday, April 14.
Attendees could take part in interactive displays, tour the mobile experience (MX) trailer and play games. New employee Brandon Parham (X43) – who had only spent a few days in the yard before the open house – brought his family to the event.
NNS’ Labor Relations and iDS teams and the United Steelworkers partnered to host the event, aimed at craftsmen and craftswomen. “This is a great opportunity for us to collaborate with the union and for employees to learn about new technology and share with their families what they do at work,” said Labor Relations Director Deborah Moore. “This is just one of many teaming events we hope to have with the union – we can’t move forward without everyone working together.”
“It was very educational and helped me figure out the direction that the shipyard is taking,” he said. “Not a lot of jobs offer things like this. It’s awesome and motivating for me as someone who is just starting out.”
Charles Spivey, who will become the union president next month, also said it’s important that the union and the company continue to partner inside and outside of the shipyard gates. “The union takes pride in the work of our craftsmen and craftswomen,” he said. “It takes everyone – salary and hourly – working together to build the excellent ships that protect our freedom.”
Keven Pugh II (O43) came to the open house because of his interest in iDS and technology in general. “I was impressed. I’m a Navy vet, and I worked on Ford (CVN 78) for three years in X31 so I had the opportunity to build ships like the ones I served on. I saw the old way. Now there are new ways, and I want to get my hands on them,” he said. Pugh was also pleased that event presenters were able to explain digital shipbuilding in a way that his 5-year-old son could understand. “They took a 3-D image of the LEGO ship he built, and that was interesting,” he said
NNS Deploys New AEDs Newport News Shipbuilding has deployed new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for all NNS Security mobile units. AEDs are portable devices that analyze the heart rhythm and can provide defibrillation, an electrical shock that may help reestablish an effective rhythm following sudden cardiac arrest. The new life-saving devices replace AEDs that were between eight and 10 years old, according to Health and Safety Manager George Bradby who also is an American Red Cross CPR/AED instructor. He trained Security personnel on the new devices, which talk users through the entire process. “Our new AEDs are probably among the most advanced available,” he said. “They’re very simple to use. You take it out, turn it on and follow the voice prompts.” NNS Fire and Emergency Services vehicles also are equipped with AEDs. But since every minute without a regular heartbeat impacts a patient’s chances of survival, it was important to also equip Security units since they are constantly traveling throughout the yard. “A lot of times we can get to a situation faster,” said Lt. E. McNair.

Shipbuilders Honored at Award Ceremony Three Newport News Shipbuilding employees – Kelli Gilliam (O22/X18), Danyelle Saunders (O41) and Marissa Webb (X51) – were among the 130 women recognized during the Manufacturing Institute’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Production (STEP) Ahead Awards in Washington, D.C., on April 10. The STEP Ahead Awards recognize women in manufacturing who exemplify leadership. Saunders, an engineering manager, was a STEP Ahead Award Honoree. Gilliam, an Apprentice School craft instructor and welding foreman; and Webb, an industrial engineer, were STEP Ahead Award Emerging Leaders. All three recipients have significantly impacted NNS and the Hampton Roads community, acting as mentors within and outside of the company. Gilliam said it’s important to expose young women to opportunities in manufacturing at an early age as they plan for their futures. “The STEP Ahead Award reminded me of the internal desire to do something big when I was in middle

school. I knew I wanted to be more than a doctor, lawyer or teacher. I just didn’t have understanding of the opportunities in manufacturing,” she said. “The impact women are making in manufacturing is obvious just based on the standard of women I met at STEP Ahead. In the U.S., women currently make up only 25 percent of the manufacturing workforce. Imagine the strides we could take if more women knew the opportunities earlier and could prepare accordingly.” The Manufacturing Institute launched the STEP Ahead initiative in 2012 to showcase the impact of women in manufacturing to help attract and retain talent the industry needs to succeed.
NNS Commemorating Workers' Memorial Day Newport News Shipbuilding will hold its second annual Workers’ Memorial Day events Monday, April 30. Ceremonies will be held at 6:30 a.m. in the roadway south of Bldg. 1904 and at noon and 8 p.m. in the roadway between the Modular Outfitting Facility (MOF) and Supplemental Modular Outfitting Facility (SMOF). NNS leaders will speak at each ceremony.

Manager Rotation Program to Launch Building upon the success of the Professional Enhancement and Enrichment Rotation (PEER) Program, Newport News Shipbuilding is launching a new development opportunity for managers. The new Manager Rotation Program will focus on improving adaptability, agility, engagement and knowledge. Each manager selected to participate in the program will rotate for periods of six months to two years through different leadership positions to grow and improve their experience, business acumen and leadership attributes. The program kicks off this spring with the selection of the first cohort. During their rotations, these managers will face challenges that enhance their knowledge and further develop their abilities. This creates an agile leadership structure and better positions NNS to leverage future business opportunities. Vice presidents will select candidates for the Manager Rotation Program. ERGs Commemorate National Walking Day Newport News Shipbuilding's employee resource groups commemorated National Walking Day on April 4 by walking the Noland Trail. The Hispanic Outreach and Leadership Alliance (HOLA) won a friendly competition to see which ERG could bring out the most walkers. Afterward, participants gathered at a local restaurant to celebrate the successful walk.

Ergonomic Task Teams Ready to Help Newport News Shipbuilding’s Ergonomic Task Teams are responsible for identifying, assessing and providing solutions to reduce or eliminate ergonomic hazards. Earlier this year, several task team members were trained by professionals from the Ergonomics Center of North Carolina. Ergonomic hazards include things such as awkward or extreme postures; whole-body or hand/ arm vibration; poorly designed tools, equipment or workstations; repetitive motion; and poor lighting. Shipbuilders concerned about an ergonomic hazard in their area can consult the applicable Ergonomic Task Team or complete a field service report (FSR) for shop-specific items. FSRs are reviewed by Facilities (O41) and addressed or assigned to one of the task teams. Ergonomic hazards requiring engineering involvement are addressed by Systems Engineering (E47). Environmental Health and Safety (O27) also reviews solutions as needed. Newport News Shipbuilding Talent Acquisition along with X11 hosted a Fitter Open House and Hiring Event March 17 at the Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development Center in Hampton. Individuals who registered in advance were given the opportunity to interview if they met the qualifications to be an NNS fitter. Talent Acquisition conducted 36 interviews and made 24 job offers. "This event is just one great example of Talent Acquisition and the Trades working together toward a common goal," said Joe Sabol, O61 trades director. "Hiring the right people at the right time is an ever-increasing challenge for traditional shipbuilding trades like welding and shipfitting. Implementing new and creative ways in how we attract, recruit and hire new talent is key." Fitters build the structures of ships. The company is currently hiring entry-level and experienced fitters. Shipbuilders Support Autism Awareness Month April is Autism Awareness Month. A group of shipbuilders recently gathered at The Apprentice School football field to show support for the "Light It Up Blue" initiative to increase awareness and understanding of autism. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. Shipbuilder Steering the Way Eugene Moss (X36) was recently honored with an On-the-Spot Ethics Award for his vigilance and reporting an environmental concern. Moss noticed someone trying to stuff too much scrap metal into a dumpster and notified his supervisor. As he removed the large pieces of scrap metal from the dumpster, Moss noticed a metal box containing approximately two gallons of oil. He once again notified his supervisor and removed the box. Moss also called in a ticket for a clean-up crew and took the box to Stop 550 where the oil was removed. Ray Bagley, vice president of Trades Operations, recently met with Moss to present the award and to thank him for taking action that likely prevented a larger spill.

These classes included yoga, body fusion, muscle conditioning and core strength training. These classes are free to all employees and are ongoing each month. • Nine SmartPath financial education sessions were held at various NNS locations throughout the quarter. The sessions were open to all employees and focused on budgeting, taxes and financial planning.
