Career Pathways Hosts Women's History Month Panel Aspiring engineer Asia Shell, a senior at Newport News’ Heritage High School, didn’t know what to expect from a Women’s History Month panel discussion with female leaders from Newport News Shipbuilding and Huntington Ingalls Industries. “I was pleasantly surprised,” she said. “Their answers were very detailed. They each had their own story. It was very inspiring because we all have to make our own way. It was great to hear how these women who are successful in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields got where they are today.” Shell was among more than 200 young women from high schools in Newport News and Hampton who gathered at Heritage High School Tuesday, March 13, for the Career Pathwayssponsored panel discussion. It featured Alma Martinez Fallon, HII’s director of Strategy and Business Development; Chandra McCulley-Hooker, director of Program Production for NNS’ submarine program; Aylin Robertson, NNS’ director of Production Planning and Scheduling; Brandi Smith, NNS’ director of Quality Control; and Cindi Wolfe, NNS’ director of Talent Acquisition. Panelists covered a variety of topics, including the gender gap in STEM career fields and the importance of hard work, taking advantage of available resources, finding mentors and building positive relationships.

Updates: Hidens Parking Lot and Huntington Avenue Bridge In January, Facilities announced plans to add 500 parking spaces to the Hidens Parking Lot by the end of the first quarter. Since the project began, spaces have incrementally become available for employee use. Currently, 290 of the 500 spaces are available – with the remaining spaces on track to be complete by the end of March. Additionally, a long-term plan for Hidens is
being developed to add additional parking and improve traffic flow. Details about this plan will be shared with employees as soon as they are finalized. In regards to the Huntington Avenue Bridge Replacement Project, the city of Newport News has not yet determined a start date. At this time, it’s likely construction will not begin until April. Newport News
Shipbuilding will continue working closely with the city to get updates and once a project start date is determined, the date will be communicated to employees via Currents, the NNS to Go app and MyNNS. Recharging with history and hip hop By Jennifer Boykin President, Newport News Shipbuilding Over shutdown, I saw the Broadway musical “Hamilton,” about the life and times of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and the birth of our nation. Unlike traditional Broadway musicals, this one features both singing and rapping. Since seeing it, I’ve been quoting – and yes, quasi rapping – some of the songs. My favorite lyric is, “I Am Not Throwing Away My Shot!” The past few months have been a bit of a whirlwind for me, and seeing this show helped me to take a break, and to let myself be inspired by something that on the surface has little to do with shipbuilding. If you are like me, though, it’s hard to totally disconnect from work and the responsibilities that comes with it. As I watched “Hamilton” (which was incredible and I highly recommend), it helped me recharge and relax. It also resonated with me personally and professionally. It cleared my mind and got me thinking in a different way about my vision for our future and my responsibility as president. Like I said… it’s hard for me not to relate everything back to the shipyard, even a hip hop musical. In fact, I centered my recent Apprentice School commencement address around my experience. “Hamilton” caused me to ask myself questions like, ‘What stories will future generations of shipbuilders tell about us? What legacy will we leave?’ But most of all, it left me inspired. The work we do is critically important. We are all part of something greater than ourselves, and the Navy and our nation are counting on us. Equally important, we have the responsibility to listen to our minds and our bodies – to take care of ourselves – and to find a balance between life and work. If you feel like you’re getting burned out or lacking the inspiration or creativity you once seemed to have, get out of your surroundings and clear your mind. Whether it’s spending time with family, unplugging, exercising, binge watching Netflix, or going to see a musical – find what inspires you and make time to do it. Remember, you only get one life. Don’t throw away your shot!

CURRENTS 3 On his first day at NNS, Ramirez met Pipefitter Domonick Fennell (X42), who helped make the transition easier. “We were just getting to know each other and having general conversation,” Fennell said. “He told me he was originally from Mexico. I knew some Spanish so I simply asked, ‘How do you say tighten in Spanish?’ After that, I started trying to speak more Spanish to him because I understood he was more comfortable speaking Spanish than English.” Fennell, who has been at NNS for 16 years, learned some Spanish in high school and from people he’s worked with at the shipyard. After he met Ramirez, he started to learn more Spanish. “Just taking time to get to know him as a person gave me an opportunity to learn something, and it helped me communicate with him so we could work together.” Construction Supervisor Rodney Huffman said he was taken aback when he saw how well Ramirez and Fennell were communicating in Spanish.

“After speaking with Mr. Ramirez and Mr. Fennell that morning and listening to how Fennell prefers Ramirez speak to him in Spanish so he can learn more, I truly recognized that we have something exceptional here,” Huffman said. “I have seen the positive impact, not only preventing possible miscommunication from a language barrier, but also the emotional impact it has on the mechanic level. When I hear, ‘Invest in your people and one another,’ I will always recall Mr. Ramirez and Mr. Fennell investing in each other.”
Tearing Down Barriers Josue Ramirez admits he was initially apprehensive about coming to work at Newport News Shipbuilding. A contractor with MK Industries, Ramirez knew he would be far from family and friends in California.
Ramirez said he is grateful for Fennell’s efforts to reach out. After eight months at NNS, Ramirez is feeling more settled.
“I wasn’t sure about coming because it was so far,” he said. Although he worked as a contractor at Ingalls Shipbuilding in the past, Ramirez was also a bit uneasy about the work he would be doing at NNS. “I had never worked on submarines. In Pascagoula, I worked on ships, but the dimensions and everything are different on submarines,” he said.
Fennell, who is also a pastor, said communication is important as NNS continues to focus on inclusion and diversity. “You can’t be successful living together, working together and building together without being comfortable with each other,” he said. “If we’re going to work together, we have to aim to tear down barriers to let people know they’re accepted and celebrated. “When I look at (Ramirez), I don’t see contractor, I don’t even see someone who speaks English as a second language,” Fennell said, adding the two have become friends.

Kellye Walker, HII executive vice president and general counsel, also delivered remarks during the event, telling attendees that she initially planned to become a mechanical engineer. “When I got into my tough math and engineering classes, I didn’t see very many people who looked like me. I was scared. It was hard. I felt alone. I was totally intimidated,” she said. “Unfortunately, I allowed that fear and intimidation to change my mind, so I gave up engineering.” Walker encouraged students to step outside of their comfort zones to achieve their goals. “You’ve got to push past those uncomfortable feelings,” she said. “Always do your best, and you’ll be amazed at how far you’ll go. And you’ll be amazed at the
doors that will fling open.” Heritage High School senior Adrianna Apelt – who plans to major in veterinary science and minor in engineering in college – said she appreciated the panel’s insight. “A lot of people in high school don’t understand what they want to do, and their ideas change a lot. It was nice to have some perspective on what the future holds for us, especially as women.” A similar panel discussion held at NNS during Manufacturing Day last fall gave rise to the idea of having female leaders from the shipyard speak with local students. During her remarks at the commissioning ceremony, NNS President Jennifer Boykin said Colorado "will forever be highlighted in our shipyard’s history" because it launched the digital shipbuilding transformation. “In 2011, we started exploring going digital as an affordability idea. When we built the fan room on Colorado in 2013, for the first time we used digital instructions on a tablet instead of paper drawings – and we saw a 35 percent reduction in time and cost as a result,” she said. “It was our very first digital pilot, and for us, the project was a tipping point. Experiencing that reduction was the success we needed to move forward from pilot projects to the full digital transformation that we are in the midst of today.”

X36 Supervisor Robert Hicks added, “We also go through the yard and tie down structures and loose material, depending on what kind of winds are expected.” The nor’easter caused conditions many longtime shipbuilders said they had never seen, Master Shipbuilder Thomas Callicutt (X36) said. During the height of the storm, the winds pushed waves over NNS’ piers. The rough surf and high winds required additional attention as a safety precaution, and X36 quickly took action during the unfavorable weather conditions. The tugboat Huntington was brought alongside a ship moored at Pier 6 to help smooth out the motion caused by the rough seas. “We got there within five minutes. We were kind

of like a floating fire truck trying to get there as fast as possible,” said Tugboat Operator Alex Rogers (X36). Tugboats helped to hold the ship in place as a safety precaution for nearly 30 hours until the winds subsided. “It was teamwork at its best,” said Shipyard Pilot Capt. Allen Sutton (X36).
Women's History Month: Precious Brown March is Women’s History Month. The theme for this year’s Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) monthly recognition campaign is "Unite Our Voices by Speaking Together." As part of the campaign, four employees will be featured during each recognition month – two from within the featured demographic and two outside of it. Employees will share personal stories, insight and perspectives on what the month means to them. Features will be published in Currents, the NNS to Go app, MyNNS and HII social media channels.

Brown says she too hopes to influence others, especially female youth. “Dr. Christina Spells, the founder of Empower Girlz Inc., encouraged me to get involved in this local organization dedicated to mentoring high school students. Through Empower Girlz Inc., I’ve been able to positively influence and encourage girls in the community to reach their dreams through hard work.”
“As a sheet metal apprentice, I like to think of myself as a woman who is positively contributing to Newport News Shipbuilding and the defense of our nation,” Brown says. “Though shipbuilding is a male-dominated industry, as a woman, I enjoy working in the field and getting the opportunity to show those around me what I’m capable of. Every day I walk through the gates, I have the chance to prove myself not only as a

As Brown reflects on her career, she says, “I am the compilation of many resilient women who have impacted my life over the years. From them, I’ve learned to be the definition of who I want to be, strive for greatness, and have passion in all that I do – you can’t live

Hourly Performance Feedback Process Changes Beginning March 26, and continuing through May 4, supervisors will meet individually with each of their hourly employees to hold formal discussions about 2017 performance. These discussions are part of the annual Hourly Performance Feedback Process. This year, supervisors are required to provide and obtain additional feedback when they meet with each employee. In addition to providing feedback about safety, quality, work habits and technical knowledge, supervisors are expected to identify at least one area in which the employee excels and one area in which the employee can improve. Each supervisor will also solicit one actionable suggestion from their employee that they can do to help that employee be more successful in the future. This additional feedback will be used to continue the conversation about Newport News Shipbuilding’s future and support the NNSFORWARD Strategy.

Accounts Payable Going Paperless Newport News Shipbuilding's Accounts Payable Department is going paperless later this year. Vendors will be able to electronically submit invoices, and approvals will be done via electronic workflow. The new solution will go live in the third quarter of 2018. Look for more updates in the future. Please note vendors are still required to mail invoices until they are notified by Accounts Payable.
Shipbuilders are invited to “Exercise Through the Decades” March 26-29 in the free group fitness classes. Instructors will incorporate exercise trends, music and workout clothes from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s into their classes. Participants are encouraged to dress for each class’ decade – 80s on Monday, March 26; 90s on Tuesday, March 27; 2000s on Wednesday, March 28; and 70s on Thursday, March 29. SharePoint Training Available Technical Skills Development (O35) is offering training to support Newport News Shipbuilding’s transition to SharePoint. The following courses are available: • SharePoint Consumer’s Workshop is a three-and-one-half-hour course that provides an overview of the SharePoint platform from an end user's perspective with the following topics: User Profile, OneDrive, Newsfeed, MyTools, Sharing, Documents, Document Libraries, Navigation and Searching. • SharePoint for Site Owners is an eight-hour course that provides training on creating and maintaining SharePoint sites. Participants learn navigation/search features in MyNNS and work with general settings to create managed content (MyNNS outward facing sites) and collaborative team sites. Participants also experience hands-on functionality and complete exercises. Classes are held at NetCenter and charged to a participant’s department overhead. Dear Shipbuilders: Earlier this afternoon, the Navy released a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a two-ship aircraft carrier buy for Enterprise (CVN 80) and the yet to be named CVN 81. This is the first step toward a two-ship contract award, and it is a historic milestone for us. The last time we signed a contract with the Navy to purchase two aircraft carriers was for the John C. Stennis (CVN 74) and Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) on June 30, 1988. To further put this into perspective, only 20 percent of our current workforce was here back then. While building aircraft carriers closer together will be new for many shipbuilders, we’ve already experienced the benefits of series production in our submarine program. We believe the most effective way to reduce cost in the aircraft carrier program is to buy two ships at a time and build them on threeto four-year centers. Buying two carriers at one time could save the Navy over $2 billion. More importantly for us, this approach also provides stability to our workforce and our supply chain of more than 2,000 companies in 46 states to better plan and invest in their workforce and facilities. With regard to our submarine business, I am happy to share two important milestones. This morning, we cut the first piece of steel for the new Columbia class, and last week we submitted a proposal for the Virginia-class Block V contract to build an additional 10 boats with our teaming partner, Electric Boat. Once awarded, this contract and the two-ship carrier contract will significantly increase our backlog, and lay the foundation for work we will perform into the year 2032 on ships that will serve our nation into the 2082 timeframe.
