All of the large hotels in the city are located more than a mile from the ocean and there only 5 small hotels with a total of 114 hotel rooms on the Balboa Peninsula, and no hotel is directly on the sand. Making Your Newport Beach Vacation Reservations

Reservations

Booking your summer vacation as early as possible will give you the best chance to reserve your desired dates and rental locations. Keep in mind, many great properties are offered at reduced prices during the off-season from September through June! Vacation rentals in the winter also offer greater flexibility with dates and pricing. We can accommodate a two night stay to a month or longer depending on availability. (Rates increase during most holiday periods.)

Returning Guests

For the upcoming summer, returning summer guests have priority to reserve the same property for the same week. If you are visiting with us for the first time, or it has been a long time, open booking commences in September for the following year.

Payment

When you reserve your vacation home, a rental agreement is emailed to you. To confirm your reservation, we require one half of the reservation total paid up-front with a signed rental contract. Your rental contract can be signed via E-signature and a credit card is taken at the time of reservation. If final payment is not received in a timely manner, your reservation will be subject to cancellation.

In 1909, with permission of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, William Collins moved his small dredge to the eastern part of the Newport bay, a mud flat called “Snipe Island”, and begin cutting a channel along the north side of the bay across from the Pavilion, piling the sand and silt up on the mud flat and thus Balboa Island was born.

From the very beginning, Balboa Island was a summer vacation place. Once an island of just summer cottages, Balboa Island has become one of the most expensive places to live in California. Although much has changed, much has stayed the same and fortunately, many of the homes on Balboa Island are still “summer homes” or year-round vacation rentals.

ABOUT LIDO ISLE

Lido Isle (mistakenly Lido Island) is a man-made island located in the harbor of Newport Beach, California. In 1904, Henry Huntington became a partner with William Collins in the Newport Beach Company with a pledge to bring the Pacific Electric Red Cars into town. In exchange for extending the PE Railway to Newport Beach, Huntington received 250 acres (1.0 km2) and a 100-foot (30 m) wide right-of-way for the railway. A mudflat was included in addition to the other land given Huntington. This mudflat became known as Electric Island, Pacific Electric Island, and finally Huntington Island. In 1923, Huntington Island was purchased from Pacific Electric by W. K. Parkinson for $45,000. Parkinson spent more than a quarter-million dollars dredging the harbor and using the fill to raise the isle more than ten feet above the high tide line.

The new development was one of the first master planned communities in California and was conceived to resemble a European Mediterranean resort. After dredging, the island was renamed Lido Isle in homage to Lido di Venezia near Venice. As part of the Mediterranean-theme the development was built with streets named after many Mediterranean cities, including Barcelona, Genoa, Nice and Ithaca.

Like a yacht the Island is tethered to the City by a small bridge. The man-made island is residential only with approximately 1,800 people living in about 800 homes with about 250 on the water. Most are built in a Mediterranean Revival Style architecture, but there are some Cape Cod and modern style homes as well.

In 1906, one of California’s last surviving turn-of-the-century pavilions, the $15,000 Balboa Pavilion was completed. Built by the Newport Bay Investment Company to enhance the development of Balboa, it has long enhanced Newport Beach as a seaside recreational destination and remains its most preeminent landmark. Her sister project, the Balboa Pleasure Pier, was also completed for the purpose of attracting lot buyers to the Balboa Peninsula. Back then, bay-front houses sold for as little as $500. At the same time, the Pacific Electric Railway opened up service to Balboa, and people came from all around Southern California to enjoy the beaches and many purchased lots and built vacation homes. Today, Balboa is as popular as ever with beach goers and residents alike.

LINES OF THE PACIFIC ELECTRIC RAILWAY

IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Newport Beach and Balboa Line

In 1906, Henry Huntington’s Pacific Electric Railway “Red Cars” began service to the Balboa Peninsula and the Pavilion, and soon, the Red Cars would bring thousands of summertime visitors from Los Angeles. By 1911, Pacific Electric was the largest operator of interurban electric railway passenger service in the world with over 1,000 miles (1,600 km) of track. The system ran to destinations all over Southern California, particularly to the south and east.

The Newport-Balboa Line was the first Pacific Electric line into Orange County. It ran down the coast from Long Beach. The trains reached Huntington Beach via Seal Beach in 1904, and the tracks were extended to Newport Beach in 1905, and finally to Balboa in 1906. (On at least two occasions, rails were extended to the tip of the peninsula to carry rock for breakwaters protecting the entrance to Balboa Bay.) The P.E. considered continuing on down the coast, but those tracks were never built.

In 1903, while the Newport-Balboa Line was still in the planning stages, Henry Huntington and his partners bought the Pacific City tract along the proposed route and renamed it Huntington Beach. Sunset Beach was laid out along the tracks in 1905, and even Corona Del Mar hoped to take advantage of the proposed extension down the coast.

The town of Balboa (not to be confused with Balboa Island) owes its start to this line. Whereas Newport Beach was Orange County’s (principally Santa Ana’s) front door in the days of coastal steamer traffic, and was tied to Santa Ana by the Southern Pacific Railroad, Balboa was but a sandy peninsula until Pacific Electric extended to the town site. Steady growth thereupon ensued and in due time, Balboa surpassed Newport as a favorite spot for holiday seekers.

The Pacific Electric began reducing service on the Newport-Balboa line in 1940 when the service to Balboa was stopped, and the last passenger run to Newport Beach was in 1950. Freight service to Seal Beach and Newport continued via the line between Stanton and Huntington Beach. The track between Huntington Beach and Newport was abandoned in 1962. The Huntington Beach and Seal Beach lines were terminated in 1966.

The Red Car

The typical equipment required by this line in the 1920’s consisted of five cars which were stored overnight at Balboa and Los Angeles. At that time seven crews were needed, five working out of Los Angeles, two out of Balboa. At its height, this line carried fairly heavy weekend crowds. As many as eight 800-Class cars were stored over Sundays on the double track stub in Balboa. These would leave for Los Angeles in two and three car trains late Sunday afternoon.

The 1299 business class car, originally in use for the Pacific Electric which can now be seen restored to its former glory at the Orange Empire Railroad Museum, was also used for Pacific Electric E’s “Commodore Limited” parlor car service between Los Angeles and Balboa (Newport Beach) from 1942 to 1948. The deluxe, extra-fare service was used by numerous prominent Los Angeles businessmen who had summer homes in Balboa, among them PE President Oscar A. Smith.

These were luxurious officers’ cars that transported many celebrities, including several presidents, as well as system

brass. Several of the cars served for years on the deluxe Newport-Balboa Commodore. Grandest of them all was the mighty “Alabama”, Henry E. Huntington’s private car. Regarded as one of the fastest and finest “inter-urbans” ever built, the huge 63-foot 52-ton car, the personal property of Huntington, was kept at his San Marino estate. The car has observation rooms at either end, and a toilet compartment and small kitchen in the middle. The kitchen was used to prepare light meals and refreshments for the passengers. The carpeted interior was outfitted with portable leather armchairs, and the large windows on the ends of the car provide a good view of the line.

From the Ashes

After Parlor Car service ended in 1948, the 1299 continued to be used for company inspection trips and was frequently chartered by rail enthusiast groups for special fan trips. While the prospect of bringing back rail service to Newport Beach and Balboa has been proposed several times over the years, the glory days of a rail trip from Pasadena and Downtown LA to Balboa in an hour is most likely to remain a memory of a long-forgotten era. However, The Pacific Electric Right-of-Way (PE ROW) / West Santa Ana Branch Corridor is a railroad right-of-way that extends for approximately 20 miles between the City of Paramount in Los Angeles County and the City of Santa Ana in Orange County. Final study recommendations for extending the metrolink line along this route occurred in the spring of 2012 and the old PE line will most likely reopen in the next few years.

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade

Many Imitators, Only One Original!

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade has a long history as a yuletide favorite. In 1919 Joseph Beek, the owner and operator of the Balboa Ferry, helped establish the “Balboa Tournament of Lights”. Support for this event came from both Balboa Island and the Peninsula. Most of the early participants were children who decorated floats that were towed around the harbor. The floats were constructed in Beek’s garage and many were patterned after those seen in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. As each tournament followed, the decorations became more varied and imaginative.

In 1946, Newport Beach City employees outfitted a barge during the holiday season and installed a lighted Christmas tree. The barge was towed around the harbor while its passengers sang Christmas carols to residents on shore. Today the Tournament of Lights, now called the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, features as many as 200 boats. The boat parade along with one of the tallest Christmas trees in the United States at Fashion Island, make Newport Beach one of the most popular places to visit at Christmas time.

The first being all the elaborate decorations and music, then viewing all the boats and homes in full décor stimulates and excites the senses. For a child, the Newport Beach Boat Parade may be their first nautical experience, whether they are on land or sea. The smell of the ocean air and the lights reflecting off the bay provide a pleasurable experience. To see all the different sized boats and to be so close to these decorated ships will have them in awe. In this age of computer generated animation, the scope of the lighted displays is sometimes lost, but not with small little kids.

Options for Viewing The Newport Beach Boat Parade

However you view the parade, it will be an experience that you will not soon forget. Here are the options for Viewing the parade: You can watch from shore at public access points along the bay, from one of the many harborfront restaurants, or by boat—either as part of the parade or anchored in the bay. Popular shore-side spots include the Balboa bayside Boardwalk on the Balboa Peninsula and the walkways around Balboa Island. Restaurants such as the Newport Landing Restaurant, Harborside Restaurant, and Woody’s Wharf also offer great views.

Watching by boat is another great option but requires advance planning, with reservations often needed at least a week in advance (and up to a month for weekends); spots can be booked through Newport Landing or Davey’s Locker Sportfishing in Balboa Village.

THE BALBOA ISLAND FERRY

IN NEWPORT HARBOR

Since 1919, the Balboa Island Ferry has provided continuous service between Balboa Island and the Balboa Peninsula. Just inside the entrance to the Balboa Village, you’re ready to step aboard the Balboa Island Ferry, taking you to and from quaint Balboa Island. The Balboa Island Ferry is the only ferry of its kind in Southern California, and one of the oldest continuously operating ferry services west of the Mississippi River. Similar ferries, such as the Coronado Ferry in San Diego and one that ran from San Pedro to Terminal Island, have shut down.

In 1919, residents on the island lobbied the city for better ferry service. A local resident, Joseph Beek, was the only bidder who also happened to own a boat and thus, he won a contract for $50 per month to run the business. A quick history on Joseph Beek:

Balboa Island might as well have been called Beek’s Island. Joseph A. Beek, was “one-of-the-first” when it came to almost everything. Beek first came to Balboa to pay for college by selling lots on Balboa Island. Eventually owning his own real estate office on Balboa Island, he co-developed Beacon Bay and Harbor Island. In 1907, he became the first harbor master. In 1919 he officially started the Balboa Island Ferry and founded the Balboa Island Yacht Club. He was one of first supporters of an early hospital called the Newport Beach Hospital. He was one of the early directors of the Newport Balboa Federal Savings and Loan Assn. He was one of the city’s first library trustees. Joseph Beek did a lot of things for the advancement of the still small, mostly transient city of Newport Beach his family name has been intertwined with Newport Harbor ever since.

The Ferry can be accessed from either the Balboa Peninsula side or from Balboa Island, as bridges connecting the ‘mainland’ to the island were built in 1919, and offer easy access from either route. The Balboa Ferry is steeped in history, making its first appearance in 1909. In 1915, Beek purchased the boat known as “The Ark,” and began

service. The Ark, essentially a large rowboat which came equipped with a small engine, still carried oars in the event of engine failure. As there was no scheduled service, passengers made arrangements to be picked up by telephoning Mr. Beek directly. As demand grew, Joseph built the first of his ferries in 1920, which held 20 passengers. Later a barge was added which accommodated one vehicle, which his ferry pushed across the harbor in front of it. The cost for that first car? 10 cents. In 1922, Joseph acquired his first self-propelled ferry that could carry two cars. In the 1950’s, his fleet of double-ended ferry boats, the Admiral, the Commodore, and the Captain, which were actually built on Balboa Island, were put into service and remain so to this day.

In the 1950’s Seymour Beek, Joe’s son, was attending Pomona College when his father gave him a summertime job as an operator. Seymour Beek has been running the business since 1968 and it has now been in the family for 100 years.

Each Ferry holds three cars and 75 passengers, and has transported over three million people. The ferries travel over 3,200 miles a year, making the approximately 800 foot trip over 200 times a day, leaving every five minutes.

Come ride the ferry and experience it yourself! On Friday and Saturday nights the hours are extended until 2 a.m., leaving plenty of time for late night fun in the Balboa Village! Both sides of the peninsula are packed with charm, offering an enjoyable day of shopping and sightseeing. Bon Voyage!

You will have quite the selection when you are trying to decide which beach to visit during your vacation. If you're into surfing, sun bathing, paddle boarding or volleyball rest assured you will have many different spots to choose from. The beaches of Newport Beach are known as some of the very best beaches near Disneyland and in all of Orange County.

SPORTS & ATTRACTIONS

Are you a huge sports fan? Come cheer on the local professional hockey team, the Anaheim Ducks or the Major League Baseball team, the Los Angels of Anaheim. Feel the intensity and competition at the Ducks game or opt for a more relaxed outdoor vibe at the Angels stadium. Both venues are just a short drive from your Newport Beach vacation rental. The Anaheim Ducks have enjoyed much success over the past decade, bringing home the Stanley Cup in 2007.

If you're a long-time fan of Mike Trout, one of baseball's premier talents, or eager to catch the exciting play of young catcher Logan O’Hoppe, the Los Angeles Angels offer plenty to cheer about this season. Saturday nights are family nights and have fireworks immediately following the game. You know what they say "Root, root, root for the home team!"

The Point

The Point is located just south of the Newport Pier at 18th Street. Before the rock jetties were put in by the Army Corps in the 1960’s to prevent the massive longshore sand migration happening all through upper-west Newport, winter storms would push the sand from west Newport south toward the Newport Pier. There, the sand would accumulate, forming The Point in front of 18th street, before falling in the deepwater trench just offshore. Due to the rock jetties in upper-west Newport much of the sand build-up has disappeared; however, The Point still offers up a fabulous point break when a strong Southern Hemi rolls through.

The Wedge

The Wedge is the most famous surfspot in Newport Beach, and when it comes to the art of bodysurfing, possibly the world. The Wedge is named for it’s unique wave formation. Located at the end of the Peninsula, the Wedge is formed when a side wave comes bouncing off the jetty to meet the incoming swell, wedging together to create an A-frame wave face with great speed, tremendous size and extreme power. These powerful shorebreak waves crash in just a few feet of water, and are very dangerous.

The Wedge is mainly a spectator’s treat where people line up on the sand berm to watch the talents of such surfers as Mike Stewart, Kelly Slater, and our very own Wedge Crew. The Wedge is open only to bodysurfing from May to October. When the blackball flag is raised, no boards of any kind are allowed and only the most experienced should venture into it’s waters.

Blackie’s

Named after the local bar, Blackie’s is located just north of the Newport Pier, between 20th and 28th. Blackie’s is a longboarder’s paradise during a good winter storm. Primarily west facing with a deepwater trench offshore to the south, Blackie’s only breaks when there is a west or northwest swell. This makes Blackie’s primarily a winter break but you can occasionally catch a wave or two in the summer. Just beware of black ball (explained in Ocean Safety Tips) and the crowds.

56th Street/River Jetties

River Jetties is located at the mouth of the Santa Ana River, at the border of Newport Beach and Huntington Beach at 74th Street. Just eighteen streets to the south, 56th Street reigns as king over the Newport surf scene. In between is a wide-open expanse of beach approximately 3/4 mile long, unobstructed by the rock jetties found in most of west Newport. This makes for very strong side-shore currents and riptides, and can be a treacherous place to swim during a big swell. Hosts to many amateur and pro surf contests, these offshore breaks are very fast and powerful, making the short board the surfboard of choice.

A Street

A Street, located just south of the Balboa Pier, is known for it’s powerful shorebreak and very steep beach; a mecca for talented skimboarders and bodysurfers alike. Don’t be fooled by the apparent ease with which the local surfers skim the powerful surf here. The learning curve is even steeper than the beach and serious injury can occur. However, for those with some experience, A Street can provide a thrilling ride that can’t be matched. If you happen to be visiting during a large swell, be sure to watch the skimboarders bravado and skill and if you’re lucky you may just see a pier scraper. Just don’t stray near the water’s edge.

Ocean Safety Tips

Lifeguard

Always swim near a lifeguard. Check the surf conditions with the lifeguard before entering the water and choose a beach that fits your comfort and skill level. Never feel embarrassed if in trouble. Wave your hands above your head, a universal sign for help, and you will be assisted. You can also call a local number for the daily surf report: 949.673.3371

Rip Currents

Rip currents, or riptides as they are often called, are very misunderstood and for this reason, pose the highest potential threat to the average beach-goer. The United States Lifeguard Association (USLA) has found that some 80% of rescues by USLA affiliated lifeguards at ocean beaches are caused by rip currents. These currents are formed by surf and gravity, because once surf pushes water up the slope of the beach, gravity pulls it back. This can create concentrated rivers of water moving offshore. Some people mistakenly call this an undertow, but there is no undercurrent, just an offshore current. If you find yourself vigorously swimming toward shore and making no headway, even backward progress, DO NOT PANIC! Most rip currents are narrow and a short SWIM PARALLEL TO SHORE will bring you to safety. And remember, never be afraid to ask for help.

Warning Signs

Observe all warning signs. Each year thousands of visitors are rescued by the Newport Beach lifeguards. Before entering the water, be sure to observe the color of the flag flying at the rear of the closest lifeguard tower. Each day, the lifeguard raises a colored flag based on his assessment of the surf conditions. The solid colored flag green represents light surf, yellow represents moderate surf, and red represents heavy or dangerous surf conditions.

Due to the summer crowds, one more flag may be flying at the front of the lifeguard tower. The Black Ball Flag, the yellow flag with the black dot in the center, means that hard board surfing is prohibited. Talk to your lifeguard for more information on the Lifeguard Flag System.

Don’t Drink and Swim

Alcohol and swimming don’t mix. Alcohol can reduce body temperature and impair swimming ability. Perhaps more importantly, both alcohol and drugs impair good judgement, which may cause people to take risks they would not otherwise take. Newport Beach does not allow open containers on public property.

Supervise Your Children

When lifeguards are on duty, they are watching for potential problems, but they can’t see everything. Keep your children under a constant and watchful eye. The beach is a dynamic place, and can surprise waders who suddenly find themselves over their heads. Talk to your local lifeguard for more safety tips or visit www.csla.org.
