PARADISE-LIKE A stunning 126,000 m2 pensinsula at the heart of Tilkicik Bay in Bodrum – this is Epique Island. It comprises 75 villas, a 50 suite boutique hotel and a marina with the capacity for 150 boats. The idea is to offer timeless, modest luxury in harmony with nature, without sacrificing comfort. The villas offer privacy as well as a marvelous view of the sea and access to an expansive beach. The boutique hotel is located on the side of the hill and is connected to the marina. All of the buildings were created with the geographic characteristics of the island in mind and for this reason local materials and natural colours were used. Sustainability was another core topic when designing the island to ensure efficient energy use.

A STUNNING TRANSFORMATION Situated in the vibrant area of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, this monumental silo, once the tallest building in South Africa, originally stored corn. The designers from the internationally acclaimed Heatherwick Studio transformed the historical building into a stunning piece of art, where the outside with its facetted glass windows is as spectacular as the inside. These windows belong to the exclusive “The Silo” hotel which occupies the upper six floors of the building, just above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (see p. 16-17).

The Park Inn by Radisson Hotel in Kigali is located right in the heart of Rwanda’s capital, Kigali City, which is also the country’s most important business destination. It is the fifth hotel of The Rezidor Hotel Group in East Africa and comprises 161 rooms, several restaurants, a bar, a gym and a swimming pool. Bustling with colours and promising great service and Rwandan hospitality, the modern 4-star hotel is not far away from the international airport, from the Presidential Palace and other sights.

The Jumeirah Al Naseem hotel is the fourth and last hotel to be part of the luxurious Madinat Jumeirah resort, the largest of its sort in Dubai. Its name, ‘sea breeze’ in Arabic, matches the design of the hotel and refers to its location just a few steps away from the beach.

MODERN HERITAGE The Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art in Africa) is the result of a non-profit partnership between the V&A Waterfront and Jochen Zeitz, who donated his private art collection as the founding collection. The museum in a former grain silo unites tradition and modernity in the most perfect way, with its old walls presenting modern art. The main attraction besides the expositions is the grain shaped atrium by Heatherwick Studio, carved out of the silo’s 42 concrete tubes. Opened in September 2017, the 80 gallery spaces of the MOCAA provide 6,000 m2 to display contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora.

DELICATE AND BOLD
YSL – three letters are enough to get fashion lovers all excited. The abbreviation stands for Yves Saint Laurent, one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century. In 1966 Yves Saint Laurent travelled to Marrakech for the first time. He was so inspired by the city that it became his second home. Only a few metres away from his villa, a museum has been built to honour the creative genius and his oeuvre. The ‘musée YVES SAINT LAURENT marrakech’ (mYSLm) includes a 400 m2 permanent exhibition space dedicated to the couturier’s fashion work, a temporary exhibition space, a research library with over 6,000 volumes, a 150-seat auditorium, a bookstore and a terrace café. The architecture of the building is inspired by Saint Laurent’s designs, by the succession of delicate and bold forms.

A great project has finally been completed. This architectural masterpiece by star architect Jean Nouvel has opened its doors in November 2017. It is designed as a museum city (a ‘medina’ in Arab) under an enormous dome of 180 metres in diameter, made of almost 8,000 metal stars. The museum displays an impressive collection of artworks and artefacts from civilisations all over the world. It is intended to inspire and contribute to cultural diversity, interconnection and acceptance.

The 16-storey hospital in Cape Town is named after Professor Christiaan Barnard, who performed the world’s first heart transplant in 1967. The hospital relocated from the city centre to its brand new home in December 2016, where it comprises 248 beds, 11 theatres, two cardiac catheterisation laboratories and much more modern equipment. In honour of the hospital’s namesake the staff and specialists carry forward clinical excellence and innovation to optimise outcomes for their patients. The building is designed according to international safety standards and it incorporates sustainable principles and technology.

Built with careful attention to details, the luxury residences are a real masterpiece to live in. The airy architecture of the building includes the surrounding nature seamlessly and the clean lines and its spaciousness turn it into a calm and relaxing place. The design of the residences comes from the Spanish RCR Arquitectes, the winners of the renowned Pritzker Architecture Prize 2017.

The G by YOO residences are spread over two towers of 35 levels each and offer their inhabitants a luxurious lifestyle in Güneşli, Istanbul. The residences contain 721 studios and apartments as well as a fitness centre, spa, swimming pools, cafés, playgrounds and much more possibilities for social activities. The triangular shape of the towers was designed to omit north facing apartments in order to ensure maximum daylight. All the apartments and common areas have been designed by YOO, under the creative direction of the well known designer and YOO co-founder Philippe Starck.

GOLDEN AGE The Palm d’Or is one of six residential high-rise buildings at the Oasis Luxury Retirement Resorts in Century City, Cape Town. The 11-storey building, which has its name from the highest prize at the Cannes Film Festival, comprises 50 apartments, two elevators and includes a 24-hour concierge service. The Palm d’Or is designed according to green building standards using energy-efficient technologies. It is situated within walking distance of a variety of restaurants, shopping facilities and a nature reserve and it is not far away from the V&A Waterfront, the Cape Town International Airport, the beaches and the wineland. What a perfect location to spend the golden years!

Rosebank Towers is located in the centre of the business hub of Rosebank. With 14 floors it is the tallest building in the area. It comprises seven office floors and seven above ground parking levels on 23,000 m2. The building’s individuality is emphasised by its dynamic facetted facade and several terraces with planting on various floors. The building has received a ‘4 Star Green Star Office Design Rating’ by the Green Building Council South Africa for its numerous sustainable building features. These are, amongst others, an overall natural lighting level of 84%, the proximity to public transport, water saving measures and occupancy sensors for lighting.

GREEN GRAPHS The design of the new home of Statistics South Africa is inspired by the surrounding Tshwane hills and the form of graphs – reflecting the daily business of the Department. Thanks to its location near different public transportation facilities, its energy and water efficiency, high indoor environmental quality, minimised use of PVC and Portland cement as well as its reuse of a previously developed site it has been awarded a ‘4 Star Green Star Office Design Rating’ by the Green Building Council South Africa.

The new national headquarters of the financial services group Britam in East and Central Africa is housed in an impressive building which is both architecturally interesting and environmentally friendly – the Britam Tower. It is situated in Upper Hill, Nairobi’s financial centre. The 31-level skyscraper is 200 m high and comprises a total of 31,500 m2 office space. This makes it the tallest building in Kenya and the second tallest in Africa. Attached to it is a 12-storey car park with space for about 1000 cars. The tower’s façade consists of several prisms tapered alternately towards the ground or the roof. The full-height glass windows are sun screened by a grid of ceramic rods. On the roof there is a 60 m mast that contains three helical wind turbines to generate electricity. Britam Tower’s unique shape was designed to embody strength and stability.

G WWF South Africa’s award-winning office building in Braamfontein, South Africa, is a prime example for the application of the organisation’s core principles of sustainability and living with our planet’s restricted ressources. It obtained its Green Star status due to smart solutions regarding ventilation, heating, lighting and electricity, daylight and glare control and the recycling and reuse of existing material. It is the first retrofitted building in South Africa to receive a 6-star rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa.

The International Airport Tancredo Neves is located in Eastern Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais, near its capital Belo Horizonte. It serves Brazil’s third largest urban agglomeration of 5.5 million citizens. The historical Terminal 1 was renovated and at the same time a new terminal (Terminal 2) was constructed to adapt the airport to new needs and to expand future areas of commercial utilisation on the land side.

A SWISS PLACE ABROAD The “Casa de Suiza” is a wood pavilion based on the same idea as the “House of Switzerland”, which is used as a popular meeting place during major sport events, such as the Olympic Games. The Casa was constructed in Mexico City with a focus on sustainability. The occasion for the opening of the Casa was the celebration of 70 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Switzerland. For seven weeks the pavilion was open to the public, featuring five exhibition rooms showcasing the strengths of Switzerland and serving as a meeting place. It is intended to be used on other occasions again after its dismounting.

SAIL AWAY This elegant white yacht is a two-masted staysail ketch of impressive 54 metres. Its name is derived from the Greek mythology, from Rhea, the mother of gods. The sailers who spend time on it can choose from 14 cabins named after great explorers, like Columbus, da Gama or Magellan. From cruises in the Aegean to the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, Rhea navigates her crew safely to the next haven.
