once again realised that we had had ten years of Zuma – and now four years of sideways market action with no real return. This could no longer be ignored as SA has decaying economic conditions and wilting confidence, both domestically and from the international investment community. SA has a monumental task before it and the changes needed within governmental structures and in the broader socio-economic landscape will take a lot of effort and a lot of time to affect. It may feel like time passes quickly, but the reality is that things change slowly. Optimism is not ill-founded. But we must stay cognisant of the current state of our economy and how the current economic backdrop can either perpetuate current market themes or perhaps ignite new ones.

THEME 1: Times of uncertainty

The theme dominating the SA investment landscape at present is probably that of uncertainty. No doubt something that many are tired of hearing about by now, as financial media has made countless references to uncertainty being the driver behind the poor market performance locally. But to contextualise: Investors base their decisions to either invest directly into an economy or via financial markets on a set of long-term objectives unique to them. They have an almost infinite number of investment options from which they can choose and therefore endeavour to choose the investment that they believe will best balance their appetite for risk with their expectation for return.

THEME 2: Recession time

The next major theme is that of decelerating GDP growth. SA’s GDP growth forecast has been cut from 1.5% for 2018 to 0.7%, with the economy shrinking a seasonally adjusted annualised 0.7% in the second quarter, following a 2.6% contraction in the first quarter. According to economist Mike Schüssler, and the BankservAfrica Economic Transaction Index (BETI) September report, GDP could well have picked up somewhat in August – maybe even enough to have put an end to the technical recession. But he warns that the uptick in the BETI was mainly due to backdated “salary increases for civil servants in July and August, and the late salary adjustments of Eskom employees and some municipal workers. We may still see delayed backdated payments occur

and low risk. When things like the leadership of arguably one of the most important ministries in a country can change so abruptly, it becomes difficult to forecast what conditions are going to be five or ten years from now. Therefore, investors are reliant on the recent past as a frame of reference. Thus far that frame of reference indicates that the leadership structures in our government are unstable and unpredictable. Even though we now have a very strong and credible finance minister in the form of Tito Mboweni, given the recent track record we cannot at all be certain that he is going to still be around in a few years from now. Add to that the rhetoric around land expropriation without compensation; failing state-owned enterprises in constant need of taxpayer-funded bail-outs; growing discontent towards government from the public; our ailing economy; excessively high unemployment; and all the various external fears and shocks caused by the pull-back in international markets… Ladies and gentlemen, we have a recipe for uncertainty about the future. Put more simply, we have a lot of risk and no way of knowing whether that risk will reward investors in accordance with their expectations for returns. This theme has had a major influence on our economy over the last two years. This is best reflected in the decline in foreign direct investment in SA since 2016. SA: R30.20 (incl. ELECTRIC FORKLIFTS FOR FASTGROWING DRINKS PRODUCER Multi-national beverage manufacturer, Kingsley Beverages, has become the first largescale company in South Africa to make the switch from internal combustion-engine forklifts to more productive and efficient electric machines from Linde. With a fleet of more than 80 forklifts the company has steadily begun replacing its fleet of 2.5 and three tonne internal combustion forklifts with smaller two and three tonne electric models equally as effective inside the factory as they are outdoors in the loading yards. According to the company’s experienced maintenance team, Jakes Olivier and Fanie Horn, the reason for the switch is a simple case of mathematics in which the electric machines clearly outperform the internal combustion diesel and gas forklifts in all departments, including fuel consumption and performance, as

well as having a positive effect on driver productivity. Jozua Coetzee of Linde Materials Handling South Africa, stresses that in the fast-moving consumer goods industry, suppliers such as Kingsley Beverages have to maintain tight delivery schedules in order to uphold their reputation for reliability. It is therefore important to ensure the entire supply chain operates flawlessly from delivery of raw materials, to production and distribution. He explains, ‘The company has always used Linde forklifts to optimise productivity, making use of our brands’ unique handling abilities and precision hydraulic transmission with auto-levelling suspension to carry more loads per shift. Even so, the forward-looking technical staff was still prepared to trial an electric truck which quickly convinced them the future is electric. The Linde E20PH and Linde E30/600 supplied to Kingsley are designed for high

throughput applications where they out-perform traditional machines in terms of stacking, transporting, loading, and unloading of a wide variety of goods in multiple application types. The high productivity capability of the machines is due to Linde’s patented compact COMBI-AXLE technology, which features two three-phase traction motors integrated into the front axle as well as unique maintenance-free brakes. The forklifts are suitable for loads between 2000 and 3000 kilograms and can be adapted for use in almost any application. A number of different varieties, such as compact model for areas where space is at a premium, or a tall truck with a long wheelbase for tall, bulky loads are also available as required. The new charger and Linde’s energy management technology also ensure smart, easy-to-understand energy management.

NEWS TRAFO’S CAST RESIN UNDERSTANDING DAMAGE TOLERANCE TRANSFORMERS IN HYBRID BEARINGS READY FOR ACTION AT ZUIKERBOSCH Dry-type transformer specialist Trafo Power Solutions secured the order for 13 custom-designed cast resin units for Rand Water’s large Zuikerbosch Wastewater Treatment Works near Vereeniging. The water purification and sedimentation facilities at Zuikerbosch will reportedly provide an additional 600 Ml per day to the system at a project value of R3 billion, as part of efforts to meet growing water demand in Gauteng due to steady population migration into the province. The transformers being provided by Trafo Power Solutions range in size from 100 kVA to 1 600 kVA and have been modified to include earth fault protection and surge protection. This is in addition to the standard temperature protection features. ‘The key advantages of dry-type transformers in this kind of application is their inherent safety and their ease of installation,’ says Trafo Power Solutions managing director David Claassen. ‘The units can be installed inside built substations rather than having to be placed outdoors with their own civils and bunding infrastructure.’ Unlike conventional oil-cooled transformers, the dry-type units do not carry the risk of oil leaks or spillage and hence do not require special mitigation measures to protect the environment. The technology’s relative safety also makes them more versatile in terms of the locations in which they may be housed. The units are self-extinguishing and flame-retardant by nature, allowing them to be categorised as ‘F1’ in terms of international fire ratings. ‘The transformers represent state-of-the-art technology from the leaders in cast resin transformer products, Hammond Power Solutions (HPS) who has been developing this field for a century,’ says Claassen. ‘We have sourced our custom-designed units from the group’s manufacturing facilities in Italy, which boast worldleading expertise and equipment.’ While dry-type transformers have been around since the early 1900s, they are becoming increasingly popular in a variety of applications as the price differential compared to conventional transformers is no longer significant. Dry-type transformers are categorised as F1 in terms of international fire resistance ratings, making them low-risk as they are selfextinguishing and flameretardant by nature

New research by SKF could make hybrid bearings more cost-effective and reliable, paving the way for their use in a wider range of applications. Hybrid bearings, which combine hardened steel rings with rolling elements made of highperformance ceramic materials, are an increasingly popular option for SKF senior scientist demanding applications. Bearings Junbiao Lai of this type can outperform conventional designs where high speeds, high temperatures or poor lubrication conditions are experienced. Those characteristics have led to their use in jet engines and other critical aerospace equipment. Ceramic materials have many characteristics that make them ideal for bearing applications. Modern ceramics such as silicon nitride are hard, light and can be manufactured with an extremely smooth surface finish. Ceramic materials do have disadvantages, however. Despite continued efforts to improve their toughness, these materials can have issues with damage tolerance in the form of sensitivity to imperfections that may pre-exist in the material or on the surface, which will potentially endanger the integrity of the ceramic rolling elements used in hybrid bearings. To reduce the occurrence of such problems in service, ceramic bearing components are manufactured under extremely tight quality control, handled with great care during production and assembly operations, and inspected rigorously prior to release. That approach has created products that perform very well in service. But it also drives up cost, limiting the wider adoption of hybrid bearing technology. Now a team from SKF’s Research & Technology Department in the Netherlands is helping to take the guesswork out of ceramic product quality control. The group has developed a new predictive model of damagetolerance for ceramic rolling elements used in hybrid bearings, allowing manufacturers to ascertain the precise threshold at which a microscopic imperfection should become a concern. The team based its research on an extensive series of tests using hybrid bearings or components with imperfections artificially introduced into the surfaces of ceramic rolling elements. The project studied a range of common imperfections. Junbiao Lai, a senior scientist at SKF explains, ‘This knowledge could help our manufacturing colleagues to optimise the tolerances they use in production, reducing unnecessary scrap, and it could also help them to refine their manufacturing, assembly and handling procedures.’ Ultimately, the work should make high performance hybrid bearings cost-effective, allowing more applications to benefit from their unique and useful properties.

ROPECON TRANSPORTS LIMESTONE ACROSS TREETOPS IN GUATEMALA The countryside around the village of San Juan Sacatepéquez in south-eastern Guatemala is hilly and forested. Cementos Progreso, S. A. had been planning to build a new cement plant there for some time. Among other things, the project required a solution to transport limestone and marl from the crusher to the processing plant. Cementos Progreso, S. A. opted for RopeCon as a means to cover the distance of approximately 1.6km and the vertical rise of almost 200m. The San Gabriel cement plant is located some 35km northwest of Guatemala City. There the Guatemalan company Cementos Progreso, S. A. produces some 2.2 million tons of cement every year for the local market. By using RopeCon to transport the limestone between the crusher and the processing plant Cementos Progreso, S. A. is able to cross the terrain in a straight line despite the difficult topographical

situation. This means a gradient of 22 degrees is reached where the terrain is steepest. The RopeCon belt is fitted with axles with running wheels at regular intervals, so no additional cleats were required to tackle that gradient. The system requires no more than four towers over its entire length. Thanks to the long rope spans between the towers the amount of space required on the ground can be reduced to a minimum. The need to interfere with vegetation remains limited to a small number of points and the track does not represent an insurmountable obstacle for wildlife or humans.

RopeCon is a product developed by the Austrian ropeway manufacturer Doppelmayr. It offers the benefits of a belt conveyor as well as those of a cable car by successfully combining what is best in both technologies. The system is currently in use for a variety of material transport applications. It essentially consists of a cross-reinforced continuous flat belt with corrugated side walls which is driven and deflected by a drum in the head or tail station. The belt is fixed to axles arranged at regular intervals, which support the belt. Running wheels are fitted to either end of the axles. These run on track ropes with fixed anchoring and guide the belt. The three track rope pairs form the line structure for the system and are elevated off the ground on tower structures. The system therefore requires only a minimum of space on the ground and is ideally suited for difficult terrain and to cross obstacles of all kinds.

BLTWORLD DONATES HAAGA WALK BEHIND SWEEPER TO KEEP UMHLANGA CLEAN BLTWORLD has donated a Haaga manual walk-behind sweeper to the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) as a contribution to help it keep the popular coastal town clean. BLTWORLD recognises the ongoing attention the UIP pays to public space and how important it is that areas like the uMhlanga Promenade are unpolluted. ‘In appreciation of the UIP’s admirable work, we have donated a Haaga 477 sweeper, which is particularly suitable for use on surfaces greater than 2 000 m²,’ says Ken Mouritzen, managing director, BLTWORLD, local distributors for German-engineered Haaga sweepers. ‘Further advantages of these corrosionresistant, low-maintenance sweepers, are a lightweight construction for fatigue-free control and easy storage. No electricity is

required to operate Haaga 477 machines, which makes them perfect for cleaning public open spaces.’ Course or fine waste – including sand, paper and beverage cans - is picked up easily and is not driven over or pushed in front of the sweeper. These machines also collect wet foliage, which is normally a difficult operation. For UIP cleaner, Sanele Ngcanga, who has been working on the promenade since early 2016, this sweeper will significantly improve her daily tasks. ‘The machine has brushes on both sides, so we will be able to save time and the fact that it can pick up stones and sand is great too,’ he says. These sweepers are available from BLTWORLD on a sales or rental basis and are supported by a full repair, parts and maintenance service throughout the country.

SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC CALLS TO MASSIVELY EXPAND TRAINING IN ENERGY SECTOR

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7, to ‘ensure access to affordable, reliable and modern energy for all’, could create millions of jobs in emerging countries. However, there is a huge skills gap in most emerging countries. To solve this problem, Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, and a coalition of companies, associations and international organisations has launched the Powering Jobs campaign. The coalition’s aim is to speed up the deployment of decentralised renewable energy solutions, and to meet the urgent training needs in low energy access countries. 10

OFF-GRID SOLUTIONS COULD CREATE 4.5 MILLION JOBS WORLDWIDE According to the World Energy Outlook report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), published in November 2017, more than a billion people still don’t have access to electricity, mainly in Africa and Asia. Africa alone needs between 100 000 to 200 000 micro grids. The International Agency for Renewable Energy (IRENA) estimates that worldwide, these and other distributed renewable solutions could create 4.5 million jobs worldwide by 2030. For Schneider Electric, the solution to Africa’s energy needs is a massive deployment of decentralised renewable energy solutions, primarily from wind and solar sources. The technology already exists, and the company has completed successful projects in Africa and southeast Asia. But for mass deployment, international financial

institutions need to see viable business models, and a lack of qualified people is a sticking point. ‘Decentralised renewable energy solutions need engineers, technicians and contractors to function,’ says Thomas André, strategy director for Schneider Electric’s Access to Energy programme. ‘We have a huge opportunity to transform both economies and standards of living in these countries.’ Schneider Electric’s Access to Energy programme aims at training one million people, 10 000 trainers, and actively supporting 10 000 entrepreneurs by 2025. The company is determined to deploy more resources beyond its Access to Energy programme. It’s in this context the Group has connected with Power for All, a global advocacy campaign for distributed renewable energy (DRE). With a coalition of companies, associations and international organisations, they launched the Powering Jobs campaign. ‘Powering Jobs will focus on ensuring that skills and training are at the centre - not the margins - of international and national development policy related to energy access,’ says Kristina Skierka, CEO of Power for All. ‘A much higher level of donor, government and private sector commitment is needed to realize the millions of jobs that achieving SDG7 will create.’ The Powering Jobs campaign will complete a study in early 2019 which will provide the first comprehensive data on jobs related to access to energy and identify training gaps that need to be filled urgently.

South Africa’s used oil re-refining challenges The used oil industry in South Africa is thriving – out of 243 million litres of new oil sold per annum, 120 million litres is collected for recycling. However, currently only 10 percent of the used oil collected is re-refined back into base oil, with most being partially processed for fuel oil, to be used in furnaces, kilns and burners. The lubricants industry’s recycling organisation, the ROSE Foundation (Recycling Oil Saves The Environment) would ideally like to see South Africa follow in the footsteps of the global movement towards re-refining most used oil collected back to base oil.

OSE CEO Bubele Nyiba explains: ‘Rerefining means less utilisation of natural resources; emissions of carcinogenic compounds through re-refining are 15 times lower; there is a very low production of pollutants; CO2 emissions from re-refining are two times lower; and re-refining offers an effective conservation of synthetic base oil compounds. ‘We have world class re-refining plants already operating in South Africa, but even they have to import used oil from neighbouring countries to sustain a steady supply to their plants. Europe has a very high

level of environmental awareness – they label their re-refined base oil with environmental endorsements. Our market is primarily driven on price and re-refined oil needs to compete on price with virgin oil.’ Nyiba explains that the European Union’s Waste Directive strongly favours re-refining over burning for energy recovery. As a result, it is thought re-refined base oils could meet nearly a quarter of Europe’s base oil demand by 2020. ‘The international trend of refining the majority of used oil back to base oil is exciting, but unfortunately it is premature for a developing country like South Africa because

of the prohibitive cost of the technology and developing the necessary processes.’ ‘While South Africa may not yet be able to adopt a European approach to used oil, a future imagined sees a focus on a closed loop and circular economy, which will see all used oil, emulsions and used ethylene glycol being collected for processing back into base oils, flux oils and fuel oils, which will be mixed, blended and filled into finished lubricant products for various uses,’ concludes Nyiba. FAIL-SAFE LIFELINE The Travsafe System is a permanent, dual wire rope lifeline system. It is designed to protect users, who are wearing a body harness and shock-absorbing safety lanyard, from falls as they traverse the line. The Travsafe lifeline incorporates two tensioned wire ropes secured by supports spaced at a maximum interval of 15.2m. Using a travelling anchor point, the lifeline provides an uninterrupted line and can also include curves and corners to suit any application.

It attaches to the lanyard and has two jaws that automatically grip the wire rope in case of a fall. During use, the Traveler is captive within the lifeline system. Traveler options are available which permit the operator to easily engage and disengage anywhere along the line if required.
