In almost every home there is some sort of wood construction which will need regular maintenance to keep it in good condition. Here’s how customers can maintain it.
Wood care and maintenance
W
ood maintenance is a tedious task that takes time and effort to upkeep, but the natural beauty of wood far outweighs the effort.
WOODEN FLOORS The first step is to remove any old polish and grime from the surface to prevent clogging the sandpaper when sanding. Use mineral turpentine and steel wool to scrub off the dirt. If necessary, a wax stripper can also be used. Sand the floor, just enough to remove any ridges as well as the old surface coating. Make sure that there are no oily marks and that the floor is completely dry. Remember that good preparation is the key to a good finish. SEALING THE FLOOR A polyurethane sealer will be a perfect coating and the three coat system ensures good results. The first coat penetrates deeply into the wood, nourishing and revitalising it, especially if it is old. The second coat penetrates and bonds with the first and starts the surface finish. The third coat provides a hard surface finish that is scratch, water, alcohol and heat resistant, and easy to maintain. Wait at least 12 hours between coats. Always read the instructions on the tin and it is important to apply three coats. Work methodically so that you can reach back and apply more sealer to dull areas where the sealer is penetrating more than elsewhere. This is particularly important with the first
