economic relief: repo rate drop signals growth for sa hardware retailers

At the end of July, South Africans saw economic relief with the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) announcing the repo rate dropping to 7% from 7.25%.

The repo rate cut is expected to ease consumer burden by lowering borrowing costs, while creating conditions conducive to stimulating investment, supporting businesses, and driving economic activity.

According to Stats SA, in June, South Africa’s retail sector recorded a 1.6% year-on-year increase in sales compared to constant increases in prices since 2019.

The hardware, paint and glass industries contributed +0.1 points to this growth, showing positive signs of sector growth.

With the recent repo rate change, retail activity in South Africa is expected

to improve as consumers gain more disposable income from the interest rate reprieve.

The 2025 FedEx E-Commerce Trends Report revealed that a staggering 97% of consumers in the US have abandoned an online purchase because the process wasn’t convenient enough. Whether it is a clunky checkout page, a lack of payment options, or uncertain delivery times, inconvenience has become the number one dealbreaker in today’s digital economy.

And it seems that South African consumers are not so different to their American counterparts. According to research by the Baymard Institute on Statistica, cart abandonment rates have been on a steady rise since 2014, following a peak in 2013. By 2023, the percentage of online shopping carts left behind hit 70% – the highest level recorded since that 2013 high.

The value of AI tools that enhance the customer experience lies in their ability to draw insights directly from customer behaviour. However, in the South African context, a key legal and commercial question arises: whose customer experience is being improved.

In a society where South Africans have unequal access to the internet, and where segments of the population do not use online shopping exclusively or frequently, AI tools that learn only from online behaviour run the risk of generating biased results. If a tool learns from a sample that is not representative of the broader South African population, the resulting insights may fail to reflect the actual behaviours and preferences of the wider customer base.

From a due diligence perspective, it is important that retailers understand their target market and assess whether the functionality of the AI tool under consideration aligns with the intended use case and the types of insights required.

INVENTORY MANAGEMENT AND DEMAND FORECASTING

Proper inventory management is critical to avoiding waste and improving profitability. AI tools that review customer purchasing data and supply chain analytics can assist retailers in predicting future buying trends and eliminating inefficiencies.

As load shedding eases, water shedding looms. The urgency to climate-proof South Africa’s utilities must now include what flows from our taps, says Kwikot managing director Murray Crow.

For the better part of a decade, the national conversation has revolved around the energy crisis. And rightly so. But there is another crisis surging below the surface and it is already beginning to spill over: South Africa’s water infrastructure is collapsing under pressure.

In July, parts of the Eastern Cape began implementing scheduled water rationing, the latest in a string of emergency responses to a worsening drought and overstretched municipal systems. A report from DailyInvestor.com titled: Gauteng’s Water Crisis: Nearly Half of Supply Lost to Leaks and Faults mentions that Johannesburg Water loses around 44% of its supply before it ever reaches homes or businesses – a staggering figure that underscores how vulnerable our water network has become According to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s latest figures, it is estimated that 36-50% of water is lost nationally due to leaks, theft, and poorly maintained infrastructure. At this rate, water-shedding may soon become as routine and as damaging as power cuts. It is a prospect we cannot afford.

CLIMATE EXTREMES ARE EXPOSING A FRAGILE FOUNDATION

In June 2025, a severe winter storm ravaged the Eastern Cape, killing at least 49 people and causing widespread damage to roads, power lines and water treatment works. More than 300 000 households lost power, while entire communities were left without access to clean water.

This was not an isolated event – it was a stress test and one we failed. Extreme weather is becoming more frequent and more intense, and the consequences of infrastructure neglect are becoming harder to ignore.

As the managing director of Kwikot, a business deeply embedded in homes, hospitals and housing developments across South Africa, Crow has seen firsthand how quickly breakdowns in water systems ripple through people’s lives. When water is cut off, homes cannot heat water, businesses cannot operate, and basic hygiene becomes a public health risk.

THE CASE FOR TREATING WATER AS CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

“It is time to shift the narrative. South Africa’s water system is not a municipal headache; it is a national infrastructure crisis. We must treat it with the same urgency and investment focus we have (finally) given the power grid,” says Crow.

The event was held on 7 August 2025 at the picturesque Glenvista Country Club and it also doubled as a networking and fun event.

This year’s event attracted an impressive field of 124 golfers, all teeing off in a 4-ball alliance format with a scramble drive. A shotgun start got the day underway, setting the stage for a fantastic (albeit cold) day on the greens. The atmosphere was relaxed, yet competitive, with plenty of opportunities for players to showcase their skill – or to buy back a bit of luck.

A number of holes featured exciting challenges and prizes:

• Holes 4 and 15 tested accuracy with Closest to the Pin and Hole-in-One challenges

• Holes 2 and 17 measured power with Longest Drive competitions

• And Hole 10 delivered a twist — the Closest to Water challenge brought plenty of laughs (and a few wet golf balls)

• The tongue-in-cheek Longest Day prize meant even those who had a bad day out would not go home empty handed. Beyond the fairways, the day had a bigger purpose. All proceeds from the

event – including mulligan sales, sponsorship contributions, and other donations – went directly to Women and Men Against Child Abuse, the chosen charity for the day. Two days prior to its annual Trade Day, the Essential Hardware family gathered at Nasrec on 15 August for their annual Supplier Brunch and Awards – an opportunity to reflect on the past year, share exciting plans, and celebrate the invaluable contribution of its suppliers.

Kicking off the morning, Essential Hardware managing director Norman Jackson shared an update on the business, highlighting the ongoing growth of the group, which welcomed 48 new members since the last Trade Day. Despite the tough trading conditions everyone is facing this year, Essential Hardware Group continues to focus on innovation, positivity, creating excitement and extending a helping hand, living its motto of ‘Essential, is so much more than just a buying group’.

Weld-on hinges are characterised using smooth and complete leafs without any holes. Like all hinges, they consist of two leafs that join at the middle.
