The water crisis in the City of Joburg has been a pressing issue throughout February. Aged infrastructure and maintenance negligence have once again been identified as the primary causes of the water-shedding that the community has had to endure.
In his State of the Nation Address last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledged: “Poor planning and inadequate maintenance of water systems by many municipalities are the main cause of the problems we are going through now and are the reason that taps often run dry.” Having instructed relevant ministers to address the issue, hardware retailers should prepare their plumbing categories
to support contractors in mitigating this ongoing crisis.
In this issue, explore expert tips on successfully running a franchise business (page 10); our Retailers Guide focuses on everyday gardening tools (page 25); and learn about Saint-Gobain’s new RhinoRoc plant in Brakpan (page 60).
Happy DIYing!

Before committing, it is essential to understand the legal framework that governs franchising in South Africa. Whether you are considering a licence, agency, dealership, voluntary buying group, product trade name arrangement, or a full business format franchise, the rules of engagement matter. At the heart of this legal landscape lies the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), a requirement of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). The FDD ensures transparency and helps potential franchisees make informed decisions long before any contracts are signed.
A compliant FDD must present all key information including:
• Franchisor background and experience –History of the business, its leadership team, and the track record that supports its franchise system
• Litigation and bankruptcy – Any relevant past or pending legal action or financial distress involving the franchisor or its directors
• Fees and investment costs – A breakdown of start-up fees, royalties, marketing contributions, and estimated total investment, including required working capital
• Obligations and restrictions – Operational requirements, approved suppliers, product restrictions, and obligations that shape how the franchise must be run
• Territory – Whether you have exclusive rights to a specific geographic area – an important point in hardware retail where market saturation can affect profitability
• Franchisee list – Contact details for current franchisees, enabling prospective buyers to conduct meaningful reference checks

At TimBuild for example prospective franchisees will also receive detailed cashflow and budgets for the first three years of the business.
Reminder to check specifically in the franchise agreement what the term of the agreement is and what roles and responsibilities are assigned to both franchisee and franchisor.
Because the FDD contains confidential information, it is common for franchisors to require applicants to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before releasing it.
The CPA outlines a clear and fair step-by-step process:
• Complete an application form
• Undergo credit and background checks
• Attend an interview
• Sign an NDA and receive the franchise agreement + FDD
• Review the FDD for a mandatory 14-day disclosure period
• Sign the franchise agreement
• Benefit from a 10-day cooling-off period, allowing the franchisee to cancel without penalty
• After this period, training and launch preparation can begin.
Once the agreement is finalised, the franchisee receives the operations manual – a critical document detailing daily procedures, performance standards, staff management, financial reporting, branding, marketing, approved products, and compliance requirements. This ensures consistency across all outlets, whether part of a buying group, dealership, or business format franchise.
Take TimBuild, for example. New franchisees receive access to the TimBuild franchise hub, which houses essential resources: the owner’s manual, operations manual, product ranges, budgeting tools, CI manual, human resources, and performance indicators. This centralised knowledge base equips new owners to hit the ground running.
Franchising offers powerful opportunities, but success starts with understanding the legal commitments. By carefully reviewing the FDD, respecting the CPA process, and ensuring the franchisor provides robust operational support, hardware entrepreneurs can make confident, informed decisions –and build strong, sustainable businesses.
• Contracts – Copies of all agreements you will be required to sign.
Entering a franchise can be a powerful way to grow within the hardware retail sector – offering brand recognition, proven systems, and shared buying power. This was the message from Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) head Vilochanee Reddy at a franchiser mentorship breakfast hosted by Nedbank Retail Services and Franchise Coaches. In the session, Reddy’s message was simple: embrace AI thoughtfully or risk being left behind.
The first function of AI in procurement was Robotic process automation (RPA), which replaced repetitive tasks with bots. But that was just the start. Today, AI is not just about automation – now 5G, internet of things (IoT), software as a service (SaaS), blockchain, and
Let’s be honest – artificial intelligence (AI) can feel like a buzzword that is thrown around everywhere. But the reality? It is not the future anymore – it is here, and it is changing the way we work in procurement, supply chains, and franchising right now.
even 3D printing have entered the mix.
Blockchain is helping companies trace every step of a product’s journey, IoT connects systems and devices in ways we couldn’t imagine before, and predictive analytics lets franchisers forecast demand before it even hits their desks. In short, procurement has gone from being a back-office function to a strategic powerhouse.
“International brands like Starbucks, McDonald’s, and Burger King use AI not just for operational efficiency, but to reach customers in a personal, targeted way,” says Reddy. Smaller players like Juici Patties, a Jamaican restaurant franchise, are already using AI to predict stock needs, improve store hours, and boost sales. In South Africa, SPAR, Woolworths, and Total are

investing heavily in tech to keep up.
The takeaway? AI is not just a nice-to-have. It is shaping every customer interaction, every supply chain decision, and every operational move.
Reddy shared that she has noticed that the biggest shifts in procurement are around being ethical, sustainable, and data driven. “AI helps with demand forecasting, supplier selection, dynamic pricing, and even environmental, social, and governance (ESG) scoring.
Automation is taking over invoicing, stock management, and supplier collaboration. But the focus is not just efficiency – it is doing it transparently and responsibly.”

Of course, AI is not plug-and-play: “Data privacy and cybersecurity are major concerns. Integrating multiple systems can be complicated, and showing a clear return of investment (ROI) is not always easy. Some teams fear automation will take jobs – but, ironically, skills gaps remain a challenge, especially for older employees, while Gen Z tends to adapt effortlessly to these new tools,” Reddy says.
Generative AI predicts outcomes. Agentic AI acts on them autonomously.
“This is where things get really interesting,” says Reddy. “Retailers can adjust supply in real time, and finance and support teams easily automate workflows. Companies like Walmart and Starbucks are already using these tools, and soon, each of us may have multiple AI agents helping us manage daily tasks.”
Reddy says that, for franchisors and franchisees, success comes down to agility and adaptability. “Prioritising staff training, integrating systems, and using data ethically will make all the difference. South African businesses tend to look for immediate ROI – but to truly benefit from AI, you need to
balance that with a long-term mindset.”
Take warehouses, for example. Drones monitor hard-to-reach areas, and cobots –collaborative robots designed to work safely alongside humans in a shared workspace – reduce fatigue, while navigation robots improve efficiency and safety. Forklifts are being replaced by systems that can pick highbay stock autonomously.
‘And if you want a real-world example, look at Aurora’s work with Uber – self-driving trucks cutting costs, improving efficiency, and addressing driver shortages,’ says Reddy.
Reddy’s advice is to start small. “Focus on repetitive tasks, train your teams, and gradually move from reactive operations to predictive ones. SaaS solutions from AWS, Microsoft, or Google Cloud can simplify things. Tools like Salesforce AgentForce, Zycus, or ShipSea Logistics make AI practical without massive upfront costs.”
Reddy adds that backend AI – think supply chain optimisation and predictive analytics –can deliver ROI in three to six months. Frontend AI, like chatbots and personalisation engines, may take longer but they build loyalty and brand engagement. “Personally, I see massive value in the customer-focused approach – it is
where growth meets reputation.”
Reddy highlights that AI should never replace humans entirely. “Human-centred AI creates safer, skill-based roles. Governance is key and fairness, transparency, and sustainability can’t be afterthoughts. And yes, we need to keep energy use and e-waste in check by adopting green AI wherever possible.’”
“At Nedbank, we believe our role goes beyond offering best-of-breed financial products in the market into providing access to up-to-the-minute insights on major shifts and trends in the industry – particularly those that are moving at lightning speed like AI. Through our collaboration with Franchise Coaches, we create opportunities for franchisers to learn from leaders like Reddy, and translate those learnings into practical strategies for growth,” says Nedbank Commercial Banking national retail manager Karen Keylock.
AI is transforming procurement, franchising, and retail. As OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says: “The biggest risk is not taking any risk.” Bill Gates reminds us to be cautious, and Dave Waters from Supply Chain Today notes, “Predicting the future is not magic – it is artificial intelligence.”
The future is not coming – it is already here.
The question is: are you ready?

It’s slow progress, but you adapt.

You know the outcome may be unpredictable, But you trust the process.
You’re creating life, Shaping it, perfecting it. Feeling it.
It’s your garden, your pride.
So show it off!

The end of summer is upon us, and the beginning of autumn is around the corner. South Africans are turning attention to safeguarding their homes and properties to withstand the drop in temperature.

For most customers, autumn is a month of preparation for the winter season and for retailers, this presents an opportunity to cater to their customers’ needs by stocking essential products and tools for maintenance purposes. Spanning from roof inspections and gutter cleaning to garden preparation and weatherproofing walls and roofs, this feature provides information that can guide retailers on how to prepare effectively.
The roof is the first line of defence against winter weather. Autumn is the ideal time for homeowners to inspect their roofs for damage, leaks, or missing tiles.
• Roofing sealants and waterproofing solutions
• Replacement of roof tiles and shingles
• Roof inspection tools such as ladders and binoculars
• Safety equipment like harnesses and gloves.
Clogged gutters can lead to water damage and flooding during heavy rains. Retailers should emphasise the importance of clean and functional gutters.
• Gutter cleaning tools (scoops, brushes, and extendable poles)
• Gutter guards to prevent debris buildup
• Downpipe filters and connectors
• High-pressure hose attachments.
Autumn is a critical time for garden maintenance, as homeowners prepare their outdoor spaces for winter dormancy and spring growth.
PRODUCTS TO STOCK
• Rakes, leaf blowers, and garden waste bags
• Fertilisers and compost for soil enrichment
• Pruning shears and loppers for trimming trees and shrubs
• Winter plant covers and frost protection materials.

Offer bundled kits for roof maintenance, including sealants, brushes, and gloves, to make it easier for customers to purchase everything they need in one go.

Create in-store displays demonstrating how gutter guards and filters work. This can help customers understand their benefits and encourage purchases.

Host a gardening workshop in-store or online to educate customers on autumn garden care. This can drive sales of related products while building customer loyalty.

// Autumn presents an opportunity for retailers to cater to their customers' needs by stocking essential products and tools for maintenance purposes //

Keeping homes warm and energy-efficient during winter starts with proper weatherproofing in autumn.
• Weatherstripping for doors and windows
• Insulation materials for roofs and walls
• Draught excluders and door sweeps
• Exterior paint and wood sealants for weatherproofing.

1
Retailers can play a crucial role in educating customers about the importance of autumn maintenance. Use in-store signage, brochures, and social media to share tips and checklists. For example, a ‘Top 10 Autumn Maintenance Tips” poster can be a simple yet effective way to engage customers.
2
Offer a free guide or checklist on weatherproofing homes. This value-added service can position your store as a trusted resource for home maintenance.
Make it easy for customers to find what they need by creating dedicated autumn maintenance sections in your store. Group related products together, such as gutter cleaning tools and accessories, or weatherproofing materials and insulation.
3

Outdoor areas such as driveways, decks, and patios also require attention during autumn.
• Pressure washers for cleaning driveways and patios
• Deck sealants and wood preservatives
• Outdoor lighting for shorter days
• Storage solutions for garden furniture and tools.
Promote outdoor maintenance products with discounts or bundle deals to encourage customers to tackle these tasks before winter sets in. // Retailers can position themselves as trusted partners for home maintenance //
Train your staff to offer expert advice on autumn maintenance tasks. Customers are more likely to make purchases when they feel confident about using the products. Consider partnering with local contractors or experts to host Q&A sessions or demonstrations.
4
Use your website and social media platforms to highlight seasonal products and promotions. Create engaging content, such as how-to videos or blog posts, to drive traffic to your store.
Autumn maintenance is a critical period for South African homeowners, and retailers can support their customers during this time. By stocking essential products, offering expert advice, and creating a seamless shopping experience, retailers can position themselves as trusted partners in home maintenance. With the right preparation, you can not only meet customer needs but also drive sales and build long-term loyalty.

It’s the same focus: "eyes down" and total precision. But instead of marking a card, you’re fusing steel. Strike-Arc has replaced the heavy, intimidating gear of the past with lightweight, digital accuracy that’s as easy to handle as your favourite lucky marker.
Our smart inverter technology prevents sticking and manages the voltage for you, making the arc as steady as a seasoned caller's voice. It’s safe, it’s simple, and let’s be honest—building your own garden masterpiece is even more satisfying than shouting "Bingo!"

While lawnmowers and cutting equipment often dominate seasonal gardening conversations, it is the everyday gardening tools that deliver consistent, year-round turnover for hardware retailers.
Spades, forks, rakes, hoes, hand tools, wheelbarrows, and accessories form the backbone of garden maintenance, relied on by everyone from first-time homeowners to experienced gardeners and professional contractors.
Unlike large-ticket garden machinery, these tools are frequently replaced, upgraded, or added to over time. This makes gardening tools a high-turnover, high-margin category that rewards smart ranging, strong merchandising, and informed staff recommendations. Cross-selling opportunities are built into the category, with tools easily merchandised alongside large-ticket garden equipment, within general gardening sections, near pot plants and compost, or even alongside building materials — particularly in the case of wheelbarrows.
This edition of the Retailers Guide focuses on the core gardening tools category, highlighting essential products, quality indicators, materials, and design features that influence purchasing decisions at point of sale. It also explores effective merchandising strategies to maximise add-on sales and basket value.
With input from leading suppliers, this guide provides insight into current ranges and retail opportunities, helping you build a gardening tools offering that performs beyond peak seasons. Whether you are refining an existing category or expanding your garden aisle, this guide is designed to support informed stocking decisions — and dependable, repeat business.

Everyday garden tools are the backbone of any gardening aisle. Spades, hoses, secateurs, loppers and shears are used regularly, relied on heavily, and expected to perform season after season. But even the best tools lose their edge over time — and when cutting performance drops, so does customer satisfaction.
That’s where Multi-Sharp, available
from Vermont Sales, fits naturally into the Everyday Garden Tools category. Rather than replacing otherwise sound tools, gardeners are increasingly looking for simple, costeffective ways to maintain what they already own. Stocking sharpening solutions alongside hand tools allows retailers to offer a smarter, more sustainable option — and an

For 89 years, Excelsior Paints has built a reputation for quality, consistency, and dependable local manufacturing.
From its base in Roodepoort, the company has grown by producing reliable paint products while adapting to the needs of a changing market.
Now, Excelsior Paints is moving into a new phase with the launch of its advanced colour tint system and expanded colour support material, reinforcing its position as a leader in colour.
In a market shaped by design, accuracy and innovation, experience alone is not enough. Colour plays a central role in how spaces look and feel, influencing everything from homes and retail environments to large commercial projects. With its new tint system, Excelsior Paints introduces improved colour technology that delivers consistent, accurate and vibrant results across a wide range of shades.
The new system is also designed with retailers in mind. It offers improved margins compared to many current market options, opening stronger profit opportunities for stockists. At a time when margins are under pressure, this gives partners a practical way to grow their businesses while supplying a quality product their customers can trust.
Excelsior Paints further strengthens its colour credentials through its affiliation with the Colour Guild in America, an international organisation known for its work in colour development, forecasting, and technology. This relationship keeps the company aligned with global trends and technical advances, ensuring that local customers benefit from current international direction.
Access to global forecasting and research allows Excelsior Paints to introduce relevant

palettes suited to modern tastes, whether contemporary neutrals or bold statement colours. Each range is developed with an understanding of local conditions and customer expectations.
While the company continues to invest in new technology, its focus remains steady: supporting its retail partners and supplying dependable, high-quality paint solutions. The introduction of the new tint system is a clear step forward, combining decades of manufacturing experience with practical innovation.
With nearly nine decades in the industry, Excelsior Paints continues to strengthen its role in the South African paint sector, offering colour solutions that support both design ambitions and retail growth.

In construction, the most expensive work is often the work that must be redone. Across both the public and private sectors, the costs of failure are rarely limited to a simple fix.
When quality slips, specifications are misunderstood, or the application is inconsistent, the result is rework, delays, and in the worst cases, significant safety, and compliance consequences.
Sika South Africa MD Paul Adams says this ‘pay twice’ reality is back in sharper focus for asset owners, contractors, and homeowners alike.
“People tend to treat failure as a single moment, but in the built environment, it often becomes a chain reaction that includes additional materials, labour, delays, professional fees, downtime, reputational impact, and the ripple effects that come with projects falling behind schedule. For homeowners, the same logic applies at a different scale. Waterproofing that fails after the first rainy season, sealants that don’t perform as expected, or repairs that aren’t done as a system can turn a small job into an ongoing headache. Nobody budgets for paying twice, yet it happens often.”

development, or a residential property, the lesson is that reactive repairs are expensive,” notes Adams.
He adds that prevention comes down to a handful of fundamentals, including systemled specification, consistent workmanship, and access to technical guidance.
Several well-documented public cases have reinforced the importance of accountability and compliance across the sector, particularly where oversight and building control processes fail. South Africa also faces the challenge of ageing buildings and facilities, with significant maintenance backlogs. In an official parliamentary reply, the infrastructure maintenance backlog for State-owned facilities has been cited at approximately R30bn.
“These numbers matter because they reframe prevention as a strategy rather than an afterthought. Whether the asset is public infrastructure, a commercial
“In many cases, problems start when products are treated as stand-alone items instead of part of a working system,” he says. “Concrete performance, waterproofing integrity, sealing, and bonding, reinforcement and protection are all elements that interact, and that same systems thinking applies across different sectors and environments. When systems are compatible and correctly specified, the outcome is far more predictable and safer.”
The sector is increasingly focused on what good looks like in practice, particularly around inspection quality and accountability.
The NHBRC, for example, has reported strides in improving the quality of building
inspections and in formalising the inspection profession through the accreditation of building inspectors, which Adams says is an important step towards consistency and professionalism.
“If prevention is a discipline, then partners matter because they help teams implement that discipline consistently,” says Adams. “The advantage of working with an established specialist is the ability to draw on experience across multiple vertical markets, from major infrastructure and commercial builds to everyday residential applications, backed by technologies that have been tested in different conditions.”
South Africa has seen what’s possible when complex projects are delivered with the right expertise and systems. Sika solutions have supported some of the country’s most recognised builds, including the stadiums built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup (ranging from concrete additives to flooring solutions), the Gautrain (concrete additives), Kusile Power Station, and projects such as Ludeke Dam. Adams says these projects reflect the value of having access to depth across more than one construction discipline, particularly when site conditions and performance requirements vary.
“Those builds underline a simple truth. Getting it right first time is cheaper, safer, and far less disruptive than fixing it later, and peace of mind comes from knowing there’s depth of expertise and support behind the outcome. That peace of mind is also the thinking behind Sika’s ‘Relax’ campaign,” Adams concludes.

From 1 March to 30 April 2026, WD-40 South Africa will roll out its first dedicated agricultural campaign, Training of the Trades, a promotion designed not only to educate farmers and tradespeople, but to drive measurable foot traffic into participating retail outlets.
Training of the Trades is an exciting new initiative designed to educate, empower, and reward the farmers and tradespeople who keep South Africa moving. Running over two months, the campaign highlights the many uses of WD-40 Multi-Use Product in agricultural environments. From freeing rusted bolts and protecting tools that maintain machinery and reduce costly downtime, WD-40 is built for the demands of the trade.
For hardware and agriretailers, this initiative presents a clear opportunity to leverage a strong, trusted brand to increase store visits, stimulate category awareness, and boost sales in the maintenance and lubricants aisle.
Entry into the competition is activated in-store via QR codes at participating stores. Customers are encouraged to visit stores, engage with WD-40 product displays, and learn more about features such as Smart Straw, 360° spray, and Flexi Straw before entering the competition.
With R25 000 in prizes up for grabs, the incentive is strong –particularly in the agricultural and trade sectors where product performance is critical and brand loyalty runs deep.
Agricultural customers rely heavily on maintenance products to reduce downtime on machinery, protect tools, and free seized components. WD-40’s campaign reinforces these everyday applications, creating a timely reminder for customers to replenish stock.
For retailers, this means:
• Increased traffic from farmers and tradespeople
• Higher visibility for the WD-40 range
• Natural add-on sales across tools, fasteners, and maintenance products
• Stronger engagement in a high-margin consumables category.
// Training of the Trades is an exciting new initiative designed to educate, empower, and reward the farmers and tradespeople who keep South Africa moving //

RETAILERS CAN MAXIMISE THE CAMPAIGN BY:
• Positioning WD-40 prominently near entrances or trade counters
• Cross-merchandising with agricultural tools, fencing hardware, and workshop equipment
• Encouraging staff to actively inform customers about the competition.
As WD-40 makes its first focused investment into the South African agriculture sector, participating retailers stand to benefit from heightened brand activity, increased awareness, and incremental sales.
A well-supported national promotion backed by a globally recognised maintenance brand creates momentum in-store which drives turnover.

Watch the video of the ribbon cutting cermony on our Facebook page.

Saint-Gobain Africa officially inaugurated its state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Ekurhuleni, marking a significant investment of over R500 million in local manufacturing.
This milestone event brought together stakeholders from different sectors across the country, emphasising Saint-Gobain’s confidence in South Africa’s economic and industrial potential. Guests included representatives from Buyco, EST, Build It, Bit Drywall, Mica, and Buco.
Upon arrival guests received their name tags before proceeding to the hospitality marquee, where a light breakfast and refreshments were served. Once all attendees were assembled, event MC Xoli Mngambi – host of News@Prime on Newzroom Afrika – welcomed guests and invited Saint-Gobain dignitaries to the front for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially marking the opening of the plant.
The Ekurhuleni plant is a cornerstone of Saint-Gobain Africa’s “Make it in Africa to Build Africa” (MABA) commitment. It aims to support job creation, supplier development, and skills transfer while contributing to the revitalisation of South Africa’s manufacturing sector.
Saint-Gobain Africa CEO Aymeric d’Ydewalle explained that the new facility is the result of a decade-long vision, with formal planning and approvals spanning the last three years.
“This is a clear demonstration of our longterm belief in South Africa as a key industrial hub for the continent. We are committed to building lighter, more sustainable construction solutions that reduce material use, transport emissions, and energy
// This plant proves what is possible when we work together for a better future //

consumption.”Addressing various aspects of sustainability, d’Ydewalle mentioned that the product is moisture-resistant to accommodate South Africa’s ever-changing weather conditions.
In terms of durability, he noted that because the product is lightweight, it is not only easy to install but also easy to disassemble and has recycling potential.
He noted that this investment
is not just about expanding capacity; it is about creating a positive impact on the environment and society.
He further emphasised the importance of partnerships in achieving these goals.
“Collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential to drive sustainable growth. This plant is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together to build a better future,” d’Ydewalle added.

Saint-Gobain regional CEO for Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa, Thierry Bernard, highlighted that the opening of the plant is part of the company’s commitment to make the world a ‘better home’. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a strong local industrial presence to provide best-in-class service to customers and help them do a better job.
“Africa is strategically important due to its demographic growth, urbanisation, housing demand, and infrastructure development needs. This new factory embodies our global expertise and local service, while supporting sustainable construction and innovation,” Bernard stated.
He reassured the audience that SaintGobain does not invest short-term. When the company builds a factory, it commits to skills, people, communities, and local ecosystems. The new plant is the result of collaboration between group experts, regional leadership teams, and local teams working together with the same ambition and standards.
“This is exactly how Saint-Gobain succeeds globally. We strongly embody what we

call our ‘TEC’ (which stands for Trust, Empowerment, Collaboration) culture.”
He concluded by noting that the opening of the plant is a signal of confidence in South Africa and Saint-Gobain’s continued investment and growth in the region.
The French Ambassador to South Africa, Davide Martinon, also praised the investment, noting its alignment with France’s commitment to fostering industrial partnerships in Africa.
“This facility is a shining example of

international collaboration and local empowerment, showcasing how global expertise can drive regional growth and development,” he remarked, noting that this new product is the ‘Golden Rhino of Southern Africa’.
Commenting on the continued investment of Saint-Gobain in Africa, he mentioned that the company has employed about 1 200 people across all its 20 production sites in Africa. He emphasised that this speaks to Saint-Gobain’s confidence and commitment to its MABA motto.
The Ekurhuleni plant will produce the RhinoROC fibre cement board, a locally manufactured product designed to meet the highest international standards of quality, safety, and sustainability. This durable and fire-resistant material offers design flexibility and is tailored to local building needs and standards.
By reducing dependence on imports, the product ensures improved availability and reliability for customers across residential, non-residential, and infrastructure projects.
Saint-Gobain product manager Asaad Manjoo highlighted the product’s role in supporting local manufacturing, skills development, and job creation.
“RhinoROC complements our existing offerings, including gypsum, insulation, and construction chemicals, to provide a comprehensive solution for the full building envelope. It offers a lightweight building material solution for the South African market,” he noted.

Saint-Gobain Walls & Ceilings managing director Christo Smith gave an overview of the efficiency of the plant and its overall low carbon emissions design.
“During the design phase of this plant, circularity was a key consideration. As an example, the plant was designed as a zero-effluent facility, making it the first fibre cement plant in the world to achieve this. Given that the production process consumes a significant amount of water, it was essential to prioritise water preservation.”
He added that the plant is also highly efficient in terms of its installations. Its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions are significantly lower compared to other fibre cement plants. Looking ahead, Scope 3 emissions, where cement is a key ingredient in the product, are becoming an increasingly critical factor in circularity efforts. To address this, Smith mentioned that there were ongoing process improvements.
“As highlighted by our global research teams, work is already underway to substitute some of the cement with alternative ingredients. This initiative aims to further reduce the plant’s environmental footprint.”
For retailers, d’Ydewalle mentioned that locally producing the product ensures a stable supply chain that is not affected by economic fluctuations that impact importing products into South Africa. Moreover, the product offers strong overall value through its quality, durability, and long service life.

// The Ekurhuleni plant is a cornerstone of Saint-Gobain Africa’s “Make it in Africa to Build Africa” (MABA) commitment //
Following the formal proceedings, guests and media representatives were divided into groups for a tour of the highly automated and efficient plan. At the same time, live demonstrations of the 4mm and 6mm RhinoROC fibre cement board were conducted.

Retail remains one of South Africa’s largest sources of employment, while employers continue to face shortages in practical technical and operational skills.

Leroy Merlin South Africa launched the Leroy Merlin Retail Academy in Centurion on 6 February 2026, a permanent training facility designed to professionalise retail skills and improve workforce readiness across the retail and home improvement sector.
Leroy Merlin invited members of the media and their business partners to witness the official launch of the Academy. Upon arrival, guests were treated to a tour of the Academy where there were classrooms designated for the theoretical part of the courses. Thereafter, the delegates were guided to the workshop where practical skills are being taught.
To kickstart the event, guests were treated to coffee and water and granted the opportunity to have conversations and connect before the formalities of the day began.
Leroy Merlin South Africa CEO Frank Dufourq welcomed all who were present, making special mention to Wits Business School, Ubuhle, NYDA, Seta representatives who partner with the Leroy Merlin Retail Academy.
“Retail is often misunderstood. It is not only the shelves or the products on them, but it is understanding the customer, technical expertise, operational receiving, and it is leadership. If we want to consistently deliver a unique offering to our customers, we must first build strong retail capabilities.”
He added that this is the reason the Leroy Merlin Academy is important to the business. The Academy is a long-term investment in
// The Academy does not solve a new problem –it responds to a long-standing one. Retail has often been underestimated and not viewed as an aspirational career path //
Leroy Merlin’s people, stores and in South Africa. This directly supports the company’s human resources’ (HR) ‘grow, perform, belong’ policy.
• GROW – By bringing strong retail capabilities to our people and strong cities
• PERFORM – By professionalism, execution, leadership, operational skills
• BELONG – By caring for our people.
“What I am proud of is how the Academy was built. It was not imported from Europe, it was designed for South Africa, by South Africans fully aligning with Adeo’s values and our business strategy.”
He reiterated that the Academy was not the sole responsibility of the HR department, but it is a collective responsibility throughout the business.
Dufourq ended his address by thanking all the managers and staff for carrying the vision and reminded them of the company’s mantra – SiyaPhambili – which means ‘we are going forward’.
// The Academy has been developed specifically for the South African context and the training content is aligned to local laws, safety standards, and labour realities, ensuring relevance for the local workforce //
“The Academy does not solve a new problem – it responds to a long-standing one. Retail has often been underestimated and not viewed as an aspirational career path, despite being a highly skilled environment that requires strong product knowledge, technical understanding, safety awareness, and leadership,” Leroy Merlin South Africa HR director Nthabiseng Thaba.
The Retail Academy addresses this mismatch by bridging the gap between employment demand and workplace readiness through structured, workintegrated training. Learning interventions include short, practical modules for immediate on-the-job application, as well as longer pathways delivered over several months that integrate leadership development with deeper technical, product and service expertise.
The Academy functions as a hybrid learning hub, combining a digital Learning Experience Platform with hands-on practical application in simulated environments. Unlike standard retail induction, the curriculum creates conditions that mirror real customer projects and operational scenarios, enabling employees to build capability while remaining active in their roles.
Skilled trade specialists – including plumbers, electricians, and builders – contribute as facilitators to ensure employees can apply technical knowledge confidently and accurately in-store. The Academy has been developed specifically for the South African context. Training content is aligned to local laws, safety standards, and labour realities, ensuring relevance for the local workforce rather than relying on adapted global programmes.
“We recognise that access to formal education in South Africa is limited for many people. The Academy creates opportunities for employees to gain recognised learning and workplace-ready skills while remaining
employed,” says Thaba.
The programmes are fully funded by the business and focus on developing practical, transferable capability that remains relevant beyond a single employer. The model is already showing results. More than 50% of graduates from an earlier learnership and graduate programme have been absorbed into permanent roles, supported through the Wholesale & Retail Sector discretionary funding model.
With the upcoming opening of its Alberton store – the sixth in Gauteng –and plans for coastal expansion within the next year, the Retail Academy is positioned to support skills development across an expanding workforce, giving approximately 600-800 employees access to this opportunity as Leroy Merlin grows its national footprint.
Leroy Merlin SA Retail Academy head and training leader Godfrey Budler ascended the stage to present awards to all the employees who have completed their courses throughout the five stores in South Africa.
“In each of the stores, we have a very special group of people that we refer to as the training ambassadors. These people show up every day, they just don’t do their job, but they share what they know. The training ambassador is someone who takes ownership of learning, shares skills generously, coaches others to be better and lift the values of ‘grow, perform and belong’.”
Budler added that to be a training ambassador, the employee needs to have credibility, passion, and the willingness to lift others. Through the Academy, the training ambassadors will support practical on-thejob learning in the stores and in the academy as well. They will help develop technical and leadership capabilities and ensure that knowledge stays inside the business. “This is how learning becomes sustainable, this is how careers are built and this is how retail becomes professional.”

Budler called up the ambassadors to the stage to acknowledge them. They were presented with certificates and ambassador badges to identify them as ambassadors within the company.
THE AMBASSADORS WERE FROM THE FOLLOWING STORES:

Following the acknowledgment of all the ambassadors, Ubuhle presented certificates to employees who have completed their courses which was made possible by the bursary offered by the company.
