RETAIL

TOOLS SO GOOD... IT FEELS LIKE CHEATING

We believe in giving retailers “the edge” over their competitors...

navigating mid-year challenges with resilience and opportunity

As we cross the halfway mark of 2026, hardware retailing continues to face significant headwinds. The escalating US-Iran conflict has disrupted global oil supplies, directly impacting South African fuel prices. With petrol forecast to increase by up to R1.63 per litre in June and diesel prices potentially increasing by R1.69 per litre, businesses are grappling with mounting operational costs and squeezed profit margins.

However, there’s reason for optimism. Trade show season has finally arrived, bringing renewed energy and opportunity. We anticipate impressive showcases from buying groups nationwide, demonstrating the innovation and determination that define our sector. These gatherings represent more than networking; they are

vital platforms where businesses forge partnerships and discover strategies to thrive despite economic uncertainty. In challenging times, our industry proves its strength through collaboration and adaptability. Here’s to a successful second half. We have an exciting new supplementary feature in this edition dedicated to Pet and Bird Products (page 27), while our Retailers Guide focuses on Drywall Systems (page 21) and see what transpired at the LRB Expo (page 64).

the real question isn’t “which franchise?” — It’s “how future-ready is it?”

In today’s fast-moving retail environment, keeping up with change can feel like a full-time job.

From shifting consumer behaviour to evolving technology and marketing trends, hardware retailers are under increasing pressure to adapt — often while still managing the day-to-day demands of running a store.

At TimBuild, the focus is simple: stay ahead of these changes so our retailers can focus on what matters most, which is to run profitable, customer-focused businesses.

One of the most visible shifts in-store is the rise of smarter retail technology. Automated shelf talkers integrated with point-of-sale systems are gaining traction, allowing pricing and promotions to update in real time. This not only reduces manual errors but ensures pricing consistency across the store. Combined with evolving store layout trends that prioritise ease of navigation and solution-based merchandising, the modern hardware store is becoming more intuitive and customer-friendly. Think store heat mapping via cell phone pinging to see which are the busiest areas of your store and know where to place your new product lines.

Beyond the physical store, omnichannel retail is no longer optional. Customers expect a seamless experience, whether they are browsing online, checking stock availability, or visiting in person. A strong in-store experience still matters, but it now needs to complement a digital presence that is easy to find and engage with.

And that’s where many retailers face a harsh reality: if customers cannot find you online, you are fighting a losing battle. Search algorithms are constantly evolving, and while AI-driven search is still a smaller part of total traffic, it is growing rapidly. Retailers need to ensure their businesses are visible, accurate, and relevant across digital platforms. This includes everything from maintaining updated business listings to producing helpful, searchable content.

behaviour is also shifting — driven by millennials and Gen Z. These customers value convenience, transparency, and experience over simply price. They are more likely to research before buying, expect quick answers, and appreciate stores that offer guidance rather than just products. This shift places increased importance on knowledgeable staff and a well-thought-out customer journey.

Loyalty programmes remain a powerful tool, but only when executed correctly. Discounts alone are no longer enough.

The most effective programmes reward behaviour, personalise offers, and create a sense of value beyond price cuts. However, collecting customer data comes with responsibility. Retailers must be clear on how that information is used and ensure compliance with data protection laws. The question

is no longer just how you collect data, but how you use it meaningfully and legally.

For independent retailers considering the future, this raises an important point: innovation is no longer optional. When evaluating a franchise, it is critical to assess how future-ready the group is. Are they actively tracking trends? Are they equipping members with the tools and knowledge needed to adapt?

At TimBuild, we believe it is the responsibility of the franchisor to stay ahead of these developments and guide franchisees accordingly. Because in retail, standing still is not neutral, it is a step backwards. And as the industry continues to evolve, those who adapt will lead, while those who do not risk being left behind.

SMS + RCS + WHATSAPP

UNPACKING THE BEST CHANNEL USE CASES FOR BUSINESS MESSAGING

When it comes to business messaging, choosing the right channel – SMS, WhatsApp for Business, or Rich Communication Services (RCS) for Business – can make the difference between overlooked outreach, memorable engagement, or missed critical communications.

In today’s fast-evolving market, understanding the strengths of these channels is essential for building secure, future-ready communication platforms. According to Celerity Systems –incorporating BulkSMS – MD Richard Simpson, the debate isn’t about choosing one over the other but rather leveraging all three in a hybrid model. Each channel has unique strengths, and the key lies in selecting the right one for the right use case.

SMS: REACH AND RELIABILITY

SMS remains the go-to channel for urgent, mission-critical messaging. Its universal reach and simplicity ensure messages are delivered even to basic handsets or in areas with weak network coverage. “SMS is ideal for time-sensitive alerts like OTPs, authentication, appointment reminders, and service updates,” says Simpson. However, its limitations in branding and rich media mean it’s best paired with richer channels like RCS and WhatsApp for Business for more engaging communication.

RCS FOR BUSINESS: RICH AND INTERACTIVE

identity adds a layer of trust, reducing phishing risks and boosting engagement. While RCS isn’t yet universally available, businesses can work with messaging partners like Kero to ensure effective deployment and fallback options like SMS or WhatsApp.

WHATSAPP FOR BUSINESS: SECURE AND PERSONALISED

reaching specific audiences,” explains Simpson. However, its reliance on opt-in and template restrictions for outbound messaging requires careful planning.

MAXIMISING ROI WITH A HYBRID APPROACH

The smartest businesses adopt a layered approach, using the strengths of all three channels:

SMS for universal, reliable alerts like security tokens and urgent notifications WhatsApp for Business for secure, personalised support and customer service

• RCS for Business for interactive campaigns and rich promotions.

RCS for Business takes messaging to the next level with features like branding, carousels, images, videos, and interactive buttons — all within the native messaging app. This channel is perfect for marketing campaigns, offering dynamic and engaging customer experiences. Verified sender

With over two billion users globally, WhatsApp for Business excels in secure, personalised communication. Its end-toend encryption makes it ideal for sensitive conversations, while its API allows seamless integration with CRMs. “WhatsApp is best for building strong customer relationships, providing personalised support, and

For example, appointment reminders benefit from this hybrid model. SMS ensures universal reach, while WhatsApp and RCS add interactivity, allowing customers to confirm, cancel, or reschedule appointments with a single tap. This reduces no-show rates and enhances customer convenience.

“RCS offers rich experiences that boost engagement, WhatsApp provides global reach and trust, and SMS ensures reliable delivery. The most successful businesses will use all three to optimise engagement, conversions, and ROI,” concludes Simpson.

How hardware retailers can benefit from eCommerce

The retail landscape is undergoing a shift as customer behaviour continues to change following the Covid 19 pandemic six years ago. At the back of this shift, eCommerce began to emerge as a dominant force across industries.

While traditionally associated with fashion, electronics, and groceries, eCommerce is now making significant inroads into the hardware retail sector. For hardware retailers, embracing eCommerce is no longer optional, it presents a business growth strategy that will ensure retailers remain competitive and meet evolving customer expectations.

Prominent voices in the retail and financial sectors, including ABSA and Nedbank, have highlighted the transformative potential of eCommerce for businesses. Their insights, combined with the experiences of successful hardware retailers, reveal a roadmap for leveraging digital platforms to

drive growth, enhance customer satisfaction, and future-proof operations.

The growing importance of eCommerce in retail

According to ABSA’s retail insights, South Africa’s eCommerce market has grown exponentially in recent years, with a 51% surge in online shopping reported in 2025. This growth reflects consumers’ increasing adoption of digital platforms for retail transactions, a trend accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. ABSA also emphasises the concept of ‘Unified Commerce’, which integrates all business functions and channels to create a seamless customer

experience. This approach moves beyond traditional multi- and omni-channel strategies and offers hardware retailers an opportunity to enhance efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Nedbank’s research echoes these sentiments, highlighting record-breaking digital spending during peak seasons like Black Friday. The bank notes that eCommerce has fundamentally changed consumer behaviour, with online shopping becoming a lasting preference rather than a temporary trend. For hardware retailers, this shift highlights the importance of integrating eCommerce into their operations to remain competitive.

Benefits of eCommerce for hardware retailers

1

EXPANDED CUSTOMER REACH

One of the most significant advantages of eCommerce is the ability to reach customers beyond the confines of a physical store. Hardware retailers can attract DIY enthusiasts, contractors, and businesses from across the country – or even internationally – by establishing an online presence. This expanded reach is particularly valuable in rural areas where access to physical stores may be limited.

INCREASED SALES OPPORTUNITIES

3

An online store operates 24/7, unlike a physical store with fixed operating hours. This unlimited availability can lead to increased sales, as customers can shop at their convenience. Additionally, eCommerce platforms can offer personalised recommendations and promotions, encouraging customers to make additional purchases.

STREAMLINED INVENTORY MANAGEMENT

4

eCommerce platforms often come with integrated inventory management systems, allowing retailers to track stock levels in real time. This reduces the risk of overstocking or understocking and ensures that popular items are always available.

DATA-DRIVEN INSIGHTS

eCommerce platforms provide valuable data on customer behaviour, preferences, and buying patterns. Hardware retailers can use this data to make informed decisions about product offerings, pricing strategies, and marketing campaigns.

CONVENIENCE FOR CUSTOMERS

Modern consumers value convenience. An eCommerce platform allows customers to browse products, compare prices, and make purchases from the comfort of their homes. For hardware retailers, this means catering to busy professionals and DIYers who may not have the time to visit a store in person.

2

COST SAVINGS

While setting up an eCommerce platform requires an initial investment, it can lead to significant cost savings in the long run. Retailers can reduce overhead costs associated with physical stores, such as rent and utilities, and allocate resources more efficiently.

TURBO FIX

FEATURE

While the benefits of eCommerce are clear, hardware retailers may face challenges in adopting this model. Common concerns include the complexity of setting up an online store, the cost of technology, and the need for digital marketing expertise.

However, these challenges can be addressed with the right approach:

• PARTNERING WITH EXPERTS: Collaborating with eCommerce solution providers can simplify the process of setting up and managing an online store. Many platforms offer user-friendly interfaces and customisable templates tailored to the needs of retailers.

•

LEVERAGING FINANCIAL

SUPPORT: Banks like ABSA and Nedbank offer financial products and advisory services to help businesses transition to eCommerce. These include loans, grants, and training programmes designed to support digital transformation.

Tips

for hardware retailers

• INVESTING IN TRAINING: Equipping staff with digital skills is essential for the success of an eCommerce venture. Retailers can invest in training programmes to ensure their teams are proficient in managing online operations and engaging with customers digitally.

To maximise the benefits of eCommerce, hardware retailers should consider the following strategies:

• OPTIMISE THE ONLINE STORE: Ensure the website is user-friendly, mobile-responsive, and easy to navigate. High-quality images, detailed product descriptions, and clear pricing are essential.

• OFFER MULTIPLE PAYMENT OPTIONS: Provide customers with a variety of payment methods, including credit cards, EFT, and mobile wallets, to accommodate different preferences.

• FOCUS ON CUSTOMER SERVICE: Excellent customer service is crucial for building trust and loyalty. Offer prompt responses to inquiries, hassle-free returns, and reliable delivery services.

• SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCE: Use social media platforms to promote products, share DIY tips, and engage with customers. Social media can also drive traffic to the online store.

• INVEST IN SEO AND DIGITAL MARKETING: Optimise the website for search engines and run targeted digital marketing campaigns to attract potential customers.

The future of hardware retail

As eCommerce continues to evolve, hardware retailers have an opportunity to redefine their role in the retail ecosystem. By embracing digital transformation, they can stay ahead of the competition, meet the demands of modern consumers, and unlock new revenue streams.

retailers guide to drywall systems

For retailers, the opportunity lies in selling the system, not just the individual components. Drywall is more than boards – it includes the full setup of metal framing, screws, jointing compounds, tapes, corner beads and finishing products. When these are merchandised together and positioned correctly, it becomes much easier to help customers get everything they need in one go. Not only does this increase the size of their basket but it also ensures they do not need to make a return trip saving them time and hassle.

The challenge at store level is helping customers understand how it all fits together. It includes picking a board – whether standard, moisture-resistant, or fire-rated – along with the correct profiles, fixings and finishing products. Without that guidance, customers often miss key items or make the wrong choices, which can lead to problems on site.

This is where good merchandising and knowledgeable staff make a real difference. Clear displays and a system-based approach take the guesswork out of the process and give customers confidence that they’re buying the right products for the job.

Drywall systems offer speed, consistency, and a clean end result, which is why they have become a preferred building option. In this Retailers Guide to Drywall Systems, we break down the key components supplied by SINIAT, where they fit in and what retailers should be thinking about when putting their ranges together.

Retailers who get this right offer a complete solution.

// Contractors and homeowners are increasingly choosing drywall as a practical, costeffective interior solution for home renovations //

Drywall systems have become an important category in hardware stores, driven by the need for quicker build times, neater finishes, and more efficient construction methods.  Contractors and homeowners are increasingly choosing drywall as a practical, cost-effective interior solution for home renovations and larger developments.

RETAILERS GUIDE – DRYWALL SYSTEMS

Steel components: THE BACKBONE OF THE SYSTEM

Siniat’s steel component range is what enables retailers to offer a complete drywall or ceiling system, rather than just boards. These components are precision-engineered to work together, ensuring structural integrity, accurate alignment, and long-term performance.

MasterFrame Walling System Components

MASTERFRAME TRACK

Used at floor and ceiling junctions, this roll-formed steel track acts as the base channel into which vertical studs are fixed.

• Provides accurate alignment for wall installations

• Can be used as a vertical locating element where required

• Rigidised for improved strength and durability

• Rigidised steel face provides a stable base for plasterboard fixing

• Designed for smooth, continuous ceiling finishes

• Maintains structural integrity while supporting lighter modern boards.

Retailers must clearly differentiate between exposed grid and plaster grid systems instore to avoid confusion and ensure correct product selection.

// Siniat's MasterGrid has products for both exposed grid ceilings and flush plastered ceilings //

Suspension and Support Components

These components ensure correct installation, levelling and long-term stability of ceiling systems:

• SUSPENSION WIRE (2.5MM GALVANISED): Pre-stretched to maintain ceiling level over time

Pet and Bird Products in Hardware –Building the ultimate one-stop shop

As consumer shopping habits continue to shift, hardware retailers are finding real opportunity in expanding beyond traditional categories. One of the most natural and profitable extensions is pet and bird products. PET AND BIRD PRODUCTS

What was once considered an add-on is quickly becoming an important category, fitting perfectly with the hardware store’s role as a practical, needs-based destination.

From dog and cat food to bird seed, feeders, toys, supplements and hygiene solutions, this category taps directly into an existing customer base while increasing basket size and encouraging repeat foot traffic.

A natural fit for hardware retail

Pet and bird products sit comfortably in the hardware environment for a few simple reasons.

Firstly, the customer overlap is already there. Shoppers coming in for DIY, gardening or maintenance are very often pet owners or bird enthusiasts. There’s no need to find new customers – it is about meeting more of their needs in one place.

Secondly, these are practical, necessity-driven purchases. Much like hardware itself, products such as pet food, bird seed, litter, and feeders are

not discretionary. They are part of everyday life. At the same time, the category offers strong impulse opportunities – toys, treats, bins, and accessories often end up in a customer’s basket.

There is also a strong link to existing ranges. Bird seed, feeders, and baths fit naturally into garden departments. Kennels, aviaries, and shelters go hand in hand with outdoor living. DIY customers are already building and maintaining cages, enclosures and feeding stations. It is a natural extension.

// Because the customer overlap is already there and being practical, necessity-driven products, a pet and bird category sits comfortably in the hardware environment //

The rise of the pet parent –and backyard birding

The continued ‘humanisation of pets’ trend is well documented, with consumers spending more on nutrition, treats and basic wellness for their dogs and cats. But alongside this, there’s steady growth in bird ownership and backyard bird feeding.

In South Africa, bird seed has long been a staple in hardware stores, and for good reason. It’s a high-volume, repeat purchase that consistently brings customers back into store. Importantly, birding appeals to a broader audience – from homeowners and gardeners to retirees and hobbyists – expanding the customer base beyond traditional pet owners.

The numbers support the opportunity. South Africa’s dog and cat pet care market – including food, treats, supplements,

accessories, and hygiene – was valued at about R9.5 to R11.5bn at the end of 2025. And that is just the formal market. Growth is expected to continue at around 6% to 8% annually through 2026, with the category forecast to exceed R14bn. This is driven by stable pet ownership, increased focus on everyday nutrition, and ongoing spend on treats and entry-level wellness. What makes this particularly attractive for hardware retailers is that pet food sits firmly in the essential spend

What is working in-store

Feedback from the hardware sector has been consistently positive, with robust growth over the past two years.

Certain trends are clear:

• Dry pet food performs well when merchandised prominently in high foot-traffic areas

• Bird seed remains a reliable, high-turn category

• Treats and accessories take longer to build but can become strong margin drivers over time with the right support and ranging.

In small and rural areas there is evidence of spend shifting from specialist pet stores to hardware retailers. In larger cities, the growth tends to come from FMCG channels, often without the same price pressure.

category. Regardless of economic conditions, consumers prioritise feeding their pets. It behaves more like a grocery staple than a discretionary purchase, making it one of the more resilient retail categories available.

Compete on convenience

While specialist pet stores and FMCG retailers continue to expand their ranges, hardware stores have a clear advantage: convenience.

Customers are busy and need to solve multiple needs in one trip. Hardware retailers can offer immediate availability, trusted local service, and a broader shopping experience combining home, garden, DIY, and pet care. There is also a gap to exploit. Bird products remain less saturated in supermarkets, giving hardware stores a stronger position in this segment, while in pet food, growth is often coming from FMCG rather than direct competition with specialists –particularly in urban areas.

Building the range

A well-balanced pet and bird offering doesn’t need to be large, but it does need to be considered.

Most important are highfrequency consumables:

• Dog and cat food (dry, wet, and premium options)

• Bird seed (standard mixes and specialist blends)

• Treats, snacks, and basic supplements.

These should be supported by margin-driving accessories:

• Leads, collars and harnesses

• Toys

• Bird feeders, cages, and dispensers.

Utility and hygiene products add further depth:

• Bowls and storage bins

• Litter trays and cleaning solutions.

And finally, there are products that fit into existing categories:

• Kennels and shelters

• Aviaries and bird housing

• Fencing, enclosures, and tie-outs

• Bird baths and garden features.

The one-stop shop advantage

For today’s consumer, convenience is everything. Hardware retailers that successfully combine home improvement, garden, outdoor living, and pet care are increasingly becoming preferred shopping destinations.

Pet and bird products bring customers into store more frequently, increase basket size, and expose shoppers to the retailer’s broader offering. Over time, this drives stronger loyalty and better overall store performance.

For independents and buying groups, it is a category that ticks all the right boxes: repeat purchases, strong margins, minimal space requirements, and a built-in customer base. Most importantly, it is a category built on everyday needs. Pets are part of the family, and feeding and caring for them remains a priority regardless of the economic climate. For hardware retailers looking to grow sustainably, pet and bird products are a logical next step in building a true one-stop shop.

Find your customers 2026 colour personality: Are they Slow, Flow, or Free?

A SIMPLE WAY TO GUIDE CUSTOMERS

TO THE RIGHT COLOUR CHOICE

Customers often walk into stores with a colour in mind – something they have seen online, something that matches a sofa, or simply ‘what’s trending’. As a retailer, this is an opportunity to guide the conversation further and help them choose colours that truly suit how they live.

The key insight: colour isn’t just decorative – it directly impacts how a space feels. The right choice can energise a home, while the wrong one can leave it feeling flat or overwhelming.

“Every colour choice, whether it’s a serene blue, a warm terracotta, or a vibrant burst

of multicolours, sends a message about what matters to your customer. This year, ask them to forget the trends and the rules and encourage them to ask themselves: Do they need the space to help them pause and breathe? Do they want it to bring people together? Or do they want it to celebrate

the boldest, most authentic version of themselves?” Dulux Colour Expert Palesa Ramaisa explains.

This approach makes it easier to introduce customers to three key colour personalities: Slow, Flow, and Free – each linked to a different lifestyle need.

The SLOW personality: THE CONTEMPLATIVE THINKER

If customers are overwhelmed by the constant pace of modern life and value stillness and introspection, they are likely to gravitate toward the Slow colour palette. They recognise that silence and slowing down help us heal.

HOW TO GUIDE THE CONVERSATION: Ask if they want their home to feel more restful or uncluttered and if the answer is yes, suggest colours that help them ‘switch off’

WHAT TO RECOMMEND: Quiet browns and natural neutrals, anchored by the meditative Slow Swing™ dark blue.

These colours evoke a contemplative, grounded wintery landscape that is inherently calming. The deep blue creates a timeless backdrop that is dramatic yet soothing, especially when paired with natural materials like wood, linen, and rattan.

How to enter:

1. Submit your entry:

Purchase any bag of RhinoLite® Plaster between: 01 June 2026 - 30 September 2026.

2.

& Cs Apply. SA only. Valid: 01 June - 30 September 2026.

Flow personalities are social creatures who thrive through togetherness and belonging. They create welcoming ‘come in, sit down, make yourself at home’ spaces.

When customers talk about creating a welcoming home, they are leaning towards Flow.

HOW TO GUIDE THE CONVERSATION: Ask if they host often or want a more inviting space and then position colour to make guests feel comfortable.

WHAT TO RECOMMEND:

Warm, harmonious tones inspired by traditional materials

– terracotta, clay, and brick. These earthy colours feel instantly familiar and inviting. The hero is the airy Mellow Flow™ light blue, which brings freshness and balance to the warm earth tones.

Sky blue and earth colours work naturally together, creating modern spaces rooted in the comfort of ‘home.’ Flow personalities host gatherings, create reading nooks for friends, and design spaces where people genuinely want to gather –whether that’s a cosy living room, welcoming kitchen, or bedroom retreat that feels like a warm hug.

// Every colour choice, whether it's a serene blue, a warm terracotta, or a vibrant burst of multicolours, sends a message about what matters to your customer //

Free personalities reject the ‘one way to be’ mentality and embrace individual expression, creativity, and playfulness. They see their home as a canvas for imagination, not a space to impress others.

HOW TO GUIDE THE CONVERSATION: Ask if they value individual expression and personal authenticity. If they are bold and creative and drawn to colour. If the answer is yes. encourage them to be expressive and personal and reassure them there are no strict rules.

Turning insight into sales

The strength of this approach is that it shifts the conversation:

• From ‘What colour do you want’?

• To ‘How do you want your space to feel’?

By helping customers identify whether they are Slow, Flow, or Free, retailers can build confidence in colour selection and position themselves as experts and trusted advisors.

WHAT TO RECOMMEND:

The Free colour story features bold, contrasting multicolours built around the vibrant Free Groove™ blue. This palette feels energising and liberating – these colours are chosen because they make people feel alive.

Free personalities embrace colour-blocking, unexpected combinations, and bold design choices. They transform their workspaces into creative hubs, kitchens into vibrant galleries, bedrooms into joyful retreats, and homes into a reflection of their refusal to live by anyone else’s rules.

Remind customers that there is no single ‘right’ colour – only the right colour for their lifestyle.

“Whether customers identify with Slow, Flow, or Free, remember there’s no ‘right’ colour choice – only the right colour for them. This year, let walls become a reflection of not just who your customer is, but who they want to be. Encourage them to pick up a brush, embrace their colour personality, and design a space that truly feels like home,” concludes Ramaisa.

The FREE personality: THE CREATIVE REBEL
The FLOW personality: THE COMMUNITY-MINDED CONNECTOR

Colours Beyond 2027+ explores the emerging shifts influencing colour choices in interiors. Developed together with the NCS Colour Forecast Council, the forecast translates global movements in design, culture, and material development into practical colour directions for real environments.

Colours Beyond 2027+ introduces a flexible framework that helps people understand how colour behaves in space and how it can shape atmosphere and experience. The framework is built around three Colour Areas – Pale, Dull Pale and Dark – each representing a distinct atmosphere and way of shaping interiors. From quiet mid-tones and filled surfaces to decorative light-tones and deeper tactile environments, these colour areas help designers and manufacturers create spaces with clarity and intention.

ncs interior colours beyond 2027+

Colour is never chosen in isolation. It shapes how a room feels, how light moves across a surface, and how materials come to life in everyday spaces.

The Colours Beyond 2027 Guide are all defined using the Natural Colour System®, ensuring that every nuance can be clearly described, reproduced, and combined across products and materials.

Each Colour Area has its own logic in nuance and material behaviour. When colours are combined across and within these areas, they create the key moods, shaping how people want their environments to feel beyond 2027.

In Colours Beyond 2027+, colour is explored through three Colour Areas: Pale, Dull Pale and Dark. Each Colour Area provides a starting point for combining colours and building balanced atmospheres in interior spaces.

FEATURE

The structure of colour

The colours in Colours Beyond 2027+ are selected and organised using the Natural Colour System (NCS). Because the system describes colour as we perceive it, every hue can be defined, reproduced, and combined with precision.

The palette spans several areas of the NCS colour circle, with a strong presence of warm hues between Y and R, balanced by grounded neutrals and deeper blue and blue-red tones. Together they create

Colour positioned through NCS

The palette of Colours Beyond 2027+ spans several parts of the NCS colour circle, with a concentration of warm Y–R hues and deeper red tones, balanced by muted greens and a few cooler blue accents.

a colour landscape that moves from calm mid-tones to more expressive accents. Across the palette we see three key nuance directions: Pale, Dull Pale and Dark.

Each colour area represents a different way of composing colour in interior spaces and helps structure how colours can be combined to shape atmosphere.

• Pale tones introduce balanced mid-tones that bring warmth and quiet presence into interiors

• Dull Pale tones provide lighter nuances

that soften surfaces and interact gently with light

• Dark tones add depth and tactility, creating contrast and atmospheric weight.

When colours are combined across different nuances of blackness, chromaticness and whiteness, interiors gain depth through gradual shifts in tone rather than strong contrast. The result is a layered and contemporary colour expression that reflects how we are beginning to shape interiors in the years ahead.

In the NCS nuance triangle the colours organise into three key areas: Pale, Dull Pale and Dark. Together they show how variations in blackness, chromaticness and whiteness shape the atmospheres of interiors.

Understand the NCS system

The NCS system is a scientifically grounded way to describe colour, based on human visual perception. Each colour is defined by an NCS notation, which shows its hue, blackness and chromaticness. Use the NCS colour circle to understand hue relationships and the NCS colour triangle to see how whiteness, blackness and chromaticness interact. Together, these steps help people navigate, compare, and specify colours with confidence and precision.

A common language for colour

The NCS is a scientifically based colour system built on how we perceive colour visually. Every colour can be described using an NCS notation, which defines its hue as well as its relationship to blackness, chromaticness and whiteness. Because colours are defined in a structured way, they can be compared, reproduced, and communicated with precision. This makes the NCS System a reliable reference for colour decisions in design, manufacturing, and paint production. Today, NCS is used as a shared colour language across industries and is present in more than 80 countries, helping professionals and consumers work with colour in a clear and consistent way.

5tips

to prevent costly winter geyser failures

As a retailer, you play a crucial role in guiding your customers to make informed decisions about their home maintenance, especially during the colder months.

In South Africa, geyser-related failures are among the most common household insurance claims, accounting for as much as  30%-50% of claims in some cases.  Winter brings increased strain on water heating systems, and geyser failures can lead to costly repairs, disruptions, and higher energy bills for your customers. By offering proactive advice and solutions, retailers can help customers avoid these issues while building trust and loyalty.

// With geyser failures on the rise, retailers have an opportunity to offer trusted advice and practical solutions that build customer confidence and loyalty //

HERE ARE FIVE PRACTICAL TIPS YOU CAN SHARE WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS TO HELP THEM PREPARE THEIR GEYSERS FOR WINTER AND REDUCE THE RISK OF FAILURES:

Encourage customers to schedule a pre-winter geyser inspection

Advise your customers to have their geysers checked by a qualified plumber before winter sets in.

HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF INSPECTING:

• The heating element for wear and tear

• Thermostat performance

• Signs of corrosion or damage.

Explain that early detection of potential issues can prevent costly breakdowns during peak usage. Remind your customers to always use approved service providers to protect their warranties.

2

Help customers choose the right water heating system

Educate your customers on the importance of using a water heating system that suits their household needs and climate.

ASK THEM TO CONSIDER:

• Whether their current system struggles to meet winter demands

• If their electricity bills are unusually high

• Frequent repair needs.

3 4 5

Advise on setting the thermostat to an efficient temperature

Many customers may not realise that setting their geyser thermostat too high increases energy costs and strains the system.

RECOMMEND AN OPTIMAL TEMPERATURE RANGE OF 55-60°C, WHICH:

• Provides sufficient hot water

• Reduces energy consumption

• Minimises wear on the system.

Encourage customers to consult a plumber to ensure the thermostat is set correctly for both safety and efficiency.

GUIDE THEM ON THE BENEFITS OF DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS:

• Larger households may need highercapacity or alternative systems

• Homes in warmer regions can benefit from solar or heat pump solutions

• High-usage households may save with energy-efficient, on-demand systems.

Offer to connect them with professionals who can assess their setup and recommend the best options for long-term savings and reliability.

Stress the importance of registration and servicing

Remind your customers to check that their geysers are properly registered and serviced by approved professionals.

EMPHASISE THE IMPORTANCE OF:

• Keeping installation documentation up to date

• Following correct servicing procedures.

Explain that missing registration or improper installation can delay or void warranty claims, leaving them with unnecessary expenses.

Promote geyser and pipe insulation products

Inform your customers about the benefits of insulating their geysers and pipes to reduce heat loss and energy consumption.

RECOMMEND PRODUCTS LIKE:

• Geyser blankets to retain heat in the storage tank

• Pipe lagging to prevent heat loss from exposed pipes.

Explain that these low-cost solutions can reduce energy waste by 30%-50% and are quick to install. Stock these items in-store and provide guidance on how to use them effectively.

Position yourself as a trusted partner

By sharing these tips, retailers position their store as a trusted partner in helping customers maintain their homes during winter. Stock relevant products like geyser blankets, pipe insulation, and energyefficient water heating systems, and provide educational materials or workshops to further assist your customers.

A little preparation now can save your customers from costly repairs and disruptions later. By guiding them through these steps, you are not just helping them avoid geyser failures, you are also building stronger relationships and ensuring they return to your store for future needs.

colour wave finds a new home at mylaW

Now, with an exciting new partnership in place, Colour Wave is positioning itself for even greater growth in the South African market.

Backed by more than 35 years of industry experience, Colour Wave has spent the past five years steadily building its presence with a focused range of lacquer-based aerosol paints designed to deliver durability, fast drying times, and ease of use across multiple applications. The brand has gained traction by offering retailers and end-users a quality product at highly competitive pricing.

The next phase of that growth now comes through its partnership with Mylaw, the home of Excelsior Paints. This brings together shared values centred on product quality, service excellence, and long-term customer relationships.

For retailers, the partnership is not merely a distribution agreement. By joining the Mylaw family, Colour Wave gains access to expanded national reach, stronger logistical capabilities, and the backing of an established coatings business with deep roots in the South African market. This creates new opportunities for stockists looking for dependable supply, improved

service levels and a growing product offering within the aerosol category.

The partnership also signals ongoing investment into innovation and product development. With additional products already planned and a strong service-driven approach, Colour Wave aims to establish itself as a leading name in aerosol coatings rather than simply another spray paint brand on the shelf.

From a product perspective, Colour Wave has been developed to handle a wide variety of applications across DIY, automotive, maintenance and industrial environments. The lacquer-based formulation provides excellent durability and adhesion on surfaces including metal, wood, and plastic, while the fast-drying system allows projects to be completed quickly and efficiently.

// With its partnership with Mylaw, Colour Wave is positioning itself for greater growth in the South African market //

The aerosol paint category is a versatile and impulse-driven segment in hardware.

Aerosol paints are invaluable for quick touchups and maintenance in addition to creative projects and specialist coating applications. Retailers continue to see strong demand for quality spray paint solutions that combine performance, convenience, and value.

AMONG THE KEY PRODUCT BENEFITS

ARE:

• Touch dry in just five minutes

• Durable finish designed to withstand demanding conditions

• Comfort tip nozzle for improved ease of use

• Versatile application across multiple surfaces and projects.

THE RANGE CURRENTLY INCLUDES:

• Multi-purpose spray paints

• Engine enamel coatings

• High heat paints

• Primers and specialty coatings.

For retailers, the breadth of the range creates opportunities for both core hardware and specialist industrial sales, while the combination of pricing and performance makes the products accessible to a broad customer base. With the backing of Mylaw and the heritage associated with the Excelsior Paints business, Colour Wave is clearly preparing for a significant expansion phase.

thrives on detail — from the formulation of advanced adhesives to continual innovation in sealing and bonding technologies. It is this philosophy that continues to bridge the gap between ordinary performance and extraordinary results.

Today, that philosophy takes tangible form as we operate from our new larger manufacturing facility — marking one of the most exciting chapters in GLUEDEVIL’s history. This new building is more than bricks and mortar. It is a clear statement of intent. It reflects the company’s belief in South Africa, its confidence in local manufacturing, and its long-term commitment to reinvesting in the country that built it.

At a time when many businesses are moving production offshore, GLUEDEVIL has chosen a different path — one rooted firmly in local growth, skills development, and long-term sustainability. This expansion allows GLUEDEVIL to build on its legacy with purpose: increasing capacity while maintaining the uncompromising quality standards that define the brand. While there is a deep pride in where GLUEDEVIL comes from, the company is even more excited about where it is going. trade credit insurance in a constrained economy

In a constrained economic environment, businesses must strike a careful balance between sustaining growth and managing heightened credit risk.

Slower economic activity, tightening liquidity, and rising interest rates place increasing pressure on consumers and businesses alike, often resulting in extended payment cycles and a greater likelihood of default.

Against this backdrop, trade credit insurance is emerging as a critical tool for businesses seeking to protect their balance sheets while continuing to trade with confidence.

According to Aon South Africa business development executive Pam Kurubally, intensifying economic pressure means that entire supply chains are taking strain. “Customers may delay payments as they manage their own cash flow challenges, while others may face more severe financial distress, including insolvency or business rescue.”

“For businesses that trade on credit, this introduces significant exposure,” she adds. “A single large bad debt can materially impact profitability, erode working capital and disrupt day-to-day operations. This risk is particularly acute for companies with concentrated customer bases, where the failure of one key debtor can have outsized consequences.”

TRADE CREDIT INSURANCE

Trade credit insurance is designed to mitigate this risk by protecting businesses against losses arising from customer insolvency or protracted default – effectively converting uncertain credit exposure into a manageable, insured cost.

“One of the key advantages of trade credit insurance is its ability to support continued growth, even in volatile markets,” Kurubally explains. “Trade credit insurance allows

businesses to maintain a forward-looking approach to growth, without taking on disproportionate risk. Rather than tightening credit terms to the point of limiting sales, businesses can extend credit with greater confidence, knowing their receivables are protected. This is particularly valuable in competitive sectors where flexible credit terms are often essential to retaining and growing market share.”

Trade credit insurance brings three major benefits to a business in a constrained economy:

1

SUPPORTING ACCESS TO FINANCE

In constrained economic cycles, liquidity becomes a central concern. Access to working capital can determine whether a business is able to continue operating and investing.

“Trade credit insurance can play a meaningful role. Financial institutions typically view insured receivables as higher-quality assets, which can improve a company’s ability to secure funding through mechanisms such as invoice discounting or trade finance,” says Kurubally. “By partially transferring the risk of non-payment to an insurer, businesses may enhance their borrowing capacity and improve overall liquidity, providing critical financial flexibility during uncertain periods.”

2

STRENGTHENING CREDIT MANAGEMENT THROUGH INSIGHT

Beyond risk transfer, trade credit insurance provides businesses with access to valuable market intelligence. Because insurers continuously monitor the financial health of buyers, credit limits can be adjusted in

response to changing risk profiles. This gives businesses access to real-time insights and early warning signals regarding potential deterioration in customer creditworthiness.

“This level of insight allows businesses to make more informed decisions and respond proactively to emerging risks, rather than reacting after losses have occurred,” Kurubally explains, “and in an unpredictable environment, this partnership approach to credit management can be a significant advantage.”

3

BUILDING RESILIENCE FOR THE LONG TERM

Ultimately, trade credit insurance not only protects against loss, but strengthens business resilience by safeguarding cash flow, supporting access to finance and enabling more secure trading relationships; Equipping businesses to navigate volatility with greater certainty.

“In challenging economic conditions, organisations that take a proactive approach to credit risk management are better positioned to withstand disruption and capitalise on opportunities when conditions improve,” says Kurubally.

As the risk of customer default becomes more pronounced, the consequences of bad debt grow increasingly severe. Trade credit insurance offers businesses a practical and strategic solution that protects cash flow, supports sustainable growth, and enhances financial stability.

“For companies trading on credit, it is not simply an insurance product, but a core component of resilient and responsible business management,” Kurubally concludes.

Legendary Retail Brands expo delivers a powerhouse platform for independent retail

The Legendary Retail Brands (LRB) Expo marked the first time the DIY Depot and Mica groups came together for a combined event, creating an opportunity to leverage each other’s strengths.

The annual Mica Market will still take place later in the year as a standalone event, following what proved to be a landmark combined gathering for the independent hardware and DIY sector.

Hosted at the Sandton Convention Centre from 13–14 April, the event brought together members, suppliers and key industry stakeholders. Highlights included a wellsupported Expo, the DIY Depot Awards Dinner, and a lively Mica Member closing dinner.

DIY Depot Awards Dinner Sets the Tone

Proceedings kicked off on the evening of 13 April with the DIY Depot Awards Dinner, held in the Bill Gallagher Room at the SCC. The event provided a valuable opportunity to recognise member achievements while reinforcing the strength of the group.

In his opening address, LRB CEO and an owner of multiple Mica Stores Steven Sollinger, welcomed attendees and highlighted the importance of unity in challenging trading conditions. He noted that 17 new DIY Depot stores have opened in the past 15 months, signalling strong confidence in the group’s model and the continued

relevance of independent retail.

Sollinger emphasised that the reimagined Expo was a direct response to member feedback, particularly the need for greater supplier access and enhanced engagement opportunities. He also acknowledged the critical role of suppliers in supporting the event and encouraged members to leverage the LRB Expo App to maximise their experience.

International motivational speaker and author Gavin Sharples, was the MC and added a fun element to the evening, delivering his insightful and amusing  ‘Section 8’ address. This celebrates the often-unsung ‘MAD’ individuals who ‘Make A Difference’ through dedication, purpose, swimming upstream, and a commitment to excellence. The main takeout of the presentation being the importance of relationships.

AWARDS AND TRADE EXPO

LRB Expo

The LRB Expo on 14 April, held in Hall 1 at the Sandton Convention Centre showcased over 200 exhibitor stands.  The venue was transformed into a vibrant branded marketplace with suppliers sparing no effort.

The combined format created a unique opportunity for both DIY Depot and Mica members to engage with an expanded supplier base — creating real value for both attendees and exhibitors.

Suppliers went all out, delivering standout displays and high-energy promotional activity across the floor. Plascon was the undeniable showstopper — constructing a full house structure within the exhibition space and setting a new benchmark for creativity and engagement at trade shows. Plascon also gave away three JBL PartyBox Encore speakers — high-powered portable Bluetooth units designed for parties, featuring JBL Pro Sound, synchronised light shows, and karaoke capabilities — which were awarded to the stores placing the largest orders on the day.

The Ruwag stand drew strong crowds with a unique hands-on feature. With the help of Ruwag tools, David Mohr of Edge Dynamics sharpened knives for visitors while also showing how to craft a unique 360-layer feather pattern Damascus chef’s knife with a Maple burl handle — one of which was awarded to a lucky retailer.

Hamilton Brushware added a fun, interactive element with its spinning wheel competition, where participants won whatever prize the wheel landed on. Cathlene from Oranje Mica walked away with an entire tape stand concept.

At the Promac Paints stand, visitors tested their strength in a ‘heavy man hammer’ competition — the harder the hit, the higher the score. These activations were just a few of the many engaging competitions that kept retailers entertained and fully immersed throughout the event.

The exclusive show specials, competitions, and wide range of products on display ensured the expo was extremely well attended and reinforced the importance of face-to-face interaction in building business relationships.

Master Lock is recognized around the world as the authentic, enduring name in padlocks and security products. Since our founding in 1921, we have worked hard to earn and maintain the trust of our customers by delivering on our promise of strength and quality and by continually setting new standards for lock design, application and performance. As the largest global manufacturer and marketer of padlocks, we continue to build our founder’s passion for innovation, quality and compelling value into our expanding lines of security solutions.

Master Lock Chain Gang

There is a saying that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. When it comes to security, there is no better explanation of why it is so important to look at a security solution in its entirety. There is no point in having the toughest padlocks, but then using them with a sub-standard chain or cable. The thieves will just leave the padlocks and attack the weak chain or cable in order to gain access.

Master Lock has a range of chains and cables to suit every requirement.

Top of the range is the Master Lock hardened square link chain, available in pre-manufactured lengths and shackle diameters. These chains are twice as tough and resistant to bolt cutters and angle grinders than standard hardened chains. They are also housed in a plastic sheath for protection against scratching.

There is also a comprehensive range of braided steel cables. Manufactured

combination and keyed cables. For convenience, a range of galvanised chain and padlock sets are available. The round link chain is housed in a nylon sheath and the padlock rubber coated for protection. Various colour options available. These sets are ideal for bicycles and motorcycles and situations where less security is required.
