strong return policies win customer trust

The rise of eCommerce in the retail sector has been a remarkable success story that continues to thrive. Online shopping and omnichannel strategies have empowered retailers to expand their businesses through digital innovations that streamline operations and enhance customer experience. Among the critical factors driving eCommerce success today are the return policies retailers offer to their consumers.

A recent FedEx survey conducted in the US highlights just how significantly return policies influence consumer behaviour, with twothirds of respondents considering an online retailer’s return policy before completing checkout. Nearly 30% admitted that the ease of returning products directly influenced whether they completed a transaction. Given these findings, retailers must carefully balance customer expectations

with operational costs when designing their return policies. As online shopping continues to evolve, retailers that prioritise seamless returns will secure a competitive advantage in an increasingly conveniencedriven market.

In our issue this month, Natalie Sanders shares how Eureka has evolved over the past 40 years (page 64), we take you through the Build it journey (page 68), and we feature the opening of Leroy Merlin's fifth store in South Africa (page 72).

WATER TANKS AND ACCESSORIES

why retailers should stock water tanks & accessories

Water tanks and accessories are an often-overlooked product category that offers substantial growth potential for hardware retailers. This article explores why hardware retailers should consider expanding their water tanks and accessories inventory.

In an era of water uncertainty, retailers who stock quality water tanks position themselves as solution providers rather than mere product sellers. Tanks offer highmargin sales opportunities while addressing consumers’ growing water security concerns. As infrastructure challenges persist in South Africa, customers increasingly seek reliable storage solutions for rainwater harvesting, emergency reserves, and sustainable water management.

Water storage tanks are engineered to be sustainable in the long term. Built

using durable materials, water tanks are constructed to withstand harsh environmental conditions. This makes them an ideal solution for South Africa’s diverse and challenging climate.

Owing to their unique design and durability for adaptability, water tanks can be installed in various settings ranging from small farms to large industrial sites, from remote rural areas to urban and developed areas where access to municipal water systems might be limited.

groundwater, water tanks reduce the dependence on traditional water supply methods.

Rainwater harvesting is an excellent way for households and businesses to build a sustainable water source. Water tanks offer a practical way to collect and store rainwater, which can then be used for irrigation, sanitation, and even drinking if properly treated. In times of water restrictions or shortages, this stored rainwater can be a lifeline for many communities.

operations, having a dedicated water storage solution allows operations to continue smoothly, even when water supplies are limited. The ability to store vast amounts of water helps these sectors maintain productivity and avoid disruptions.

In rural areas, where access to reliable water is often a challenge, tanks provide a critical solution for both domestic and agricultural needs, providing self-sufficiency and resilience against water shortages.

Another advantage of water storage tanks is their cost-effectiveness over time. While the initial investment may seem substantial, the long-term benefits far outweigh the costs.

Businesses and individuals who invest in these tanks not only protect themselves from future water crisis but also save money by reducing their reliance on expensive water supplies during periods of drought.

The installation of these tanks can contribute to greater water conservation efforts nationwide, as more people become aware of the need to sustainably manage water resources.

Benefits of water storage tanks

Investing in water storage tanks offers numerous advantages for your customers:

• WATER SECURITY: Critical in a water-scarce country with average annual rainfall of 450mm (well below global average of 860mm)

• COST SAVINGS: Reduces municipal water bills during escalating water tariffs

• DROUGHT RESILIENCE: Provides backup during increasingly frequent drought periods

• STORMWATER MANAGEMENT: Helps prevent flooding during intense rainfall events

• MUNICIPAL INDEPENDENCE: Reduces reliance on strained municipal infrastructure.

Installation considerations for South African conditions

After your customers have identified which water tank will be suitable for their needs, retailers can recommend that they consider the following installation tips:

• FOUNDATION REQUIREMENTS: Tanks must be installed on a level concrete base (minimum 100mm thick with reinforcing mesh)

• UV EXPOSURE: Choose UV-stabilised materials to withstand South Africa’s intense sunlight

• HEAT RESISTANCE: Consider heat implications — steel tanks can get very hot during summer months

• CHILD SAFETY: Ensure tanks have childsafety lids (standard feature on quality tanks)

• MUNICIPAL COMPLIANCE: Check local municipal bylaws regarding installation regulations.

As the nature of storage tanks is to serve customers for the long term, wear and tear is likely to occur. Also, to ensure that the water stored in the tanks stays clean and

conducive for daily use, retailers should advise customers to consider investing in accessories that will ensure they reach optimum benefits from their tanks.

Retailers should consider the following accessories for their water management category:

• GUTTER SYSTEMS: High-quality guttering specifically designed for rainwater harvesting

• DOWNPIPE CONNECTIONS: Various sizes of downpipe connectors (75mm, 80mm, 110mm)

• LEAF CATCHERS/GUTTER GUARDS: Prevent debris entering gutters (eg, Gutter Buddy Leaf Catcher)

• FIRST FLUSH DIVERTERS: Systems that divert initial contaminated runoff away from storage

• LEAF EATERS/FILTERS: Remove leaves and debris before water enters the tank

• RAINWATER HARVESTING CONVERSION KITS: All-in-one solutions for converting existing gutters.

Maintenance Requirements for South African Climate

When seasons change, various weather conditions have an impact on the functionality of the water storage system. In some instances, repairs and cleaning of the accessories and parts of the water storage system may be needed.

Here are some maintenance tips retailers can share with their customers:

• GUTTER CLEANING: Essential before rainy seasons to maximise collection

• DEBRIS REMOVAL: Regular clearing of inlet filters, especially after windstorms

• ANNUAL TANK CLEANING: Best performed after dry season before expected rainfall

• UV DAMAGE INSPECTION: Check plastic tanks annually for signs of sun damage

• LEAK MONITORING: Inspect seals and connections, particularly important in drought conditions.

For hardware retailers, tanks represent not just inventory items but essential community resources that establish credibility in the water management category.

Merchandising strategies for water tanks and accessories

CREATE A DEDICATED WATER MANAGEMENT SECTION

Rather than dispersing tanks and accessories throughout the plumbing department, retailers can establish a dedicated area focused on comprehensive water management solutions. This makes it easier for customers to find related products and emphasises your commitment to this category.

EDUCATIONAL DISPLAYS

Most consumers have limited knowledge about water tanks and meters.

Create informative displays that:

• Explain the benefits of water storage and monitoring water usage

• Demonstrate how tanks and meters work together in a water management system

• Show the potential cost savings from detecting leaks early and harvesting rainwater

• Highlight relevant local regulations regarding tanks and water metering.

BUNDLE PRODUCTS FOR DIFFERENT CUSTOMER TYPES

Create packaged solutions for different customer segments:

• DIY HOMEOWNER KITS: Basic tanks with simple installation accessories

• PROFESSIONAL PACKAGES: Higher-grade tanks with comprehensive accessories

• SMART HOME BUNDLES: Tanks with pumps and smart meters with connectivity options

• COMMERCIAL SOLUTIONS: Heavy-duty tanks and accessories with security features for business applications.

STAFF TRAINING

Ensure your team understands the technical aspects of water tanks and accessories and can confidently answer customer questions. Consider appointing at least one employee as your water solutions specialist who receives advanced training in these products.

STRATEGIC PLACEMENT

Position tanks and accessories near complementary products like pipe fittings, guttering, leak detection tools, and water conservation products to encourage add-on sales.

SEASONAL PROMOTIONS

Align marketing efforts with seasonal needs:

• SPRING: Focus on tank installation, rainwater harvesting systems and leak detection

• SUMMER: Emphasise water storage, conservation during peak usage months

• AUTUMN: Highlight maintenance and preparation for winter

• WINTER: Promote freeze protection accessories for tanks.

DEMONSTRATE VALUE BEYOND PRICE

Educate customers on the long-term value of quality tanks rather than focusing solely on price:

• Water security benefits

• Accuracy and durability advantages

• Potential water bill savings

• Environmental benefits of water storage and conservation.

// Investing in water tanks not only protects customers from water crisis but also saves them money by reducing their reliance on expensive water supplies //

WATER TANKS AND ACCESSORIES

Africa Tanks

Africa Tanks is the only blow moulder of water storage tanks in Southern Africa, using the latest extrusion blow moulding technology. Africa Tanks manufacturers tanks ranging from 1000l up to 5000l tanks.

Recently, Africa Tanks invested in horizontal water storage tanks moulds and now offers the market 500L and 2500L horizontal tanks. The durability and quality of these tanks meets the same standard as the vertical water storage tanks.

Africa Tanks’ 2500L tank remains one of the most in-demand sizes, offering a balance between capacity and cost. In urban settings, smaller tanks like the 1 000L and 2 000L are popular due to space limitations, while rural and larger properties often opt for 2 500L or 5 000L units. Moreover, as water infrastructure becomes less reliable and rainfall patterns less predictable, we are seeing growing interest in larger or multiple

tanks for extended water storage.

Africa Tanks encourages retailers to stock their various products and can expect market-related margins across their tank range, with accessories offering higher returns. “We support our retail partners with promotional pricing and volume-based discounts to encourage ongoing sales. While Africa Tanks does not supply pumps or filters, our products are often paired with these through specialist suppliers, enabling complementary sales

opportunities,” says Africa Tanks national sales executive Sean Killoran.

Additionally, Killoran mentions that Africa Tanks provides a comprehensive website with product specifications, feature and benefits as well as our 10-year warranty registration. Retailers can access in-store tank cutouts display units for both indoor and outdoor use. “Our trained sales team also conducts in-store training and promotional events to educate both staff and customers on our products and their benefits.”

Conclusion

Tanks and accessories represent a strategic opportunity for hardware retailers to expand their product offerings into a growing, necessitybased category. By understanding the market trends, retailers can position themselves as valuable resources for both consumers and professionals.

With thoughtful merchandising, staff training, and inventory management, water meters can become a profitable product category that strengthens customer relationships and supports the essential goal of water conservation. As water resources become increasingly precious, retailers who establish themselves in this niche will be well-positioned for sustainable growth in the years to come.

LEADING THE WAY

RE:MINED PACKAGING SINCE JANUARY 2025

how to make A space feel bright and warm this winter

As the days grow shorter and the evenings turn cooler, it is the perfect time for your customers to maximise natural light and create a feeling of warmth in their homes. Dulux colour expert Palesa Ramaisa shares tips on how your customers can brighten up their space and add a cosy touch this winter.

Let the sunshine in Colour plays a crucial role in creating a mood in any room, and this season, Dulux wants to create a mood that is warm and inviting. Bring the sunshine in by painting an accent wall with light terracotta or yellows – a sunny hue can brighten and warm a dark space.

Warmer curtains

Recommend that customers replace their summer sheers with thermal-lined curtains to keep warm air inside and prevent the cold air from seeping through the glass. Curtains with warmer, thicker threads will create an inviting atmosphere.

AND I THINK TO MYSELF WHAT A WONDERFUL WELD

With Strike-Arc’s exciting range of tech-rich, DIY-friendly welders and accessories, the welding world is now more accessible to anyone with a desire to master metal.

//

Create cosy comfort with cushions and throws

To create a comfortable and inviting space, layering a few cushions and throws is a simple yet effective way to add warmth and texture to any room. Plush cushions provide softness and support, while throws add an extra layer of comfort, perfect for those chilly evenings. These accessories can help transform the ambience of any living space and are easily adaptable to fit seasonal themes or personal tastes. The choice of colours and patterns highlights personal style, but bright colour cushions can bring warmth and vibrancy.

Lighting

Winter often brings darker weather; using layered lighting such as table lamps, floor lamps, and candles throughout the house enhances the mood and adds a cosy glow. Advise your customers to incorporate light at various heights and angles to create a warm and inviting environment. Curtains should be kept open to let in natural light. Customers can also refresh their lampshades with brighter tones to enhance lighting in their homes.

beat the chill: a diy winter-proofing checklist

Winter weather, like rain and icy winds, can turn small maintenance issues into major headaches for your customers if left unchecked. But with a few smart moves – and the right tools on hand – retailers can equip their customers to stay snug, safe, and storm-ready.

“Winter can be tough on homes if you’re not prepared. By taking care of a few important maintenance jobs now, customers can save time, money, and unnecessary stress when the real storms hit,” says Brights Hardware CEO Orlando Luis.

Here is an essential checklist for retailers to help customers beat the chill before it bites:

Play Inspector on the Roof

Advise customers to grab a ladder and scan their roof for trouble spots: cracked tiles, loose sheets, missing shingles, or signs of sagging. Early repairs can save costly damage control later.

“The roof is the first line of defence against winter weather. A small leak now could become a major problem when the rains arrive, so it is worth inspecting it carefully,” says Luis.

Retailers can suggest a waterproof sealant and a few basic repair essentials for customers to purchase as they are good items to keep on standby.

TIP!

Remind customers to always follow safety protocols. Always wear sturdy, non-slip shoes, use a stable ladder, and consider a harness for added security. It is also wise to have someone nearby in case assistance is needed.

Unblock the Unsung Heroes: Gutters and Downpipes

Clogged gutters are not just messy — they can lead to serious water damage. Advise customers to clear out old leaves and debris and check that downpipes are not cracked or loose. A basic gutter cleaning kit and some sturdy gloves will make this job quicker and easier.

Check Winter Warriors: Fireplace and Chimney

5

The fireplace and chimney also need a thorough check. Customers should look out for bird nests, cracked flues, and general blockages. Chimney brushes, firelighters, and fire screens are winter must-haves for your customers to keep everything safe and warm.

Freshen Up the Fortress

Exterior walls and wooden trim need some love, too. A fresh coat of quality paint or varnish protects surfaces from soaking rains and biting winds. Advise customers to check for peeling paint or cracks to give surfaces a refresh

8

Seal the Sneaky Gaps

Little drafts around doors and windows can steal away the warmth. Weatherstripping, foam tape, or a tube of silicone sealant can make all the difference. Advise your customers to stock up now to stop the breeze before it sneaks in.

4

Smart Backups for Darker Days

With increased pressure on the grid during colder months, load-shedding tends to become more frequent, especially in winter. Switching to alternatives like gas for heating and

Raise the Rain Game

Advise your customers to make the most of winter by installing a simple rainwater collection system. Whether it is a full tank setup or a basic barrel and diverter, harvested rainwater can be a huge help for gardens and cleaning jobs during dry months.

Protect Outdoor Spaces

Wooden decks, driveways, and patios face the full force of winter weather. Encourage customers to give surfaces a scrub and reseal them with a protective coating. A good quality deck sealer or concrete waterproofing treatment will help surfaces resist the rain.

6

cooking, solar lighting, and LED bulbs can make a real difference. They will help save even more money during winter months, especially when demand — and prices — are higher. Make sure you stock up on backup lighting like rechargeable bulbs or solar lanterns on hand and consider a gas cooker to aid your customers for unexpected blackouts.

7

Small Jobs, Big Difference

Most of these tasks can be ticked off in a weekend, giving your customers peace of mind when the real winter weather arrives. Stocking up on essentials like sealants, cleaning kits, rainwater diverters, and emergency lighting now means retailers can be ready for whatever the season throws at their customers.

Manufacturing Through Outages: smarter energy, stronger business

“In over two decades of leading one of South Africa’s largest home-grown manufacturing businesses, I’ve seen this sector weather economic cycles, policy shifts and global competition. But nothing has tested our collective resilience quite like the energy crisis we’re facing today. At Kwikot, we run high-throughput manufacturing operations that rely on uptime and predictability. Like every other plant in the country, we’re having to rethink how we manage power, costs, and continuity,” says Kwikot MD Murray Crow.

A SECTOR UNDER PRESSURE

Manufacturing in South Africa is at a critical juncture. It is the second-largest energyconsuming sector and one of the most exposed to power instability. If it doesn’t adapt fast, it risks becoming uncompetitive in a global market that prizes both efficiency and reliability.

THE CASE FOR CHANGE:

Surviving rising costs and blackouts

In 2023, South Africa lost an estimated R2.9tn in economic output due to load shedding. While much of that cost was borne by business and industry, its impact was also emotional — on workers sent home, on missed export deadlines and

// Water heating is often invisible in a factory's energy audit but geysers are used more than many realise //

on the daily stress of trying to keep lines moving.

Energy tariffs, meanwhile, have risen nearly 46% over the past four years. In a high-input environment like manufacturing, that figure isn’t just a number on a utility bill, it’s the difference between expansion and retrenchment.

At Kwikot, the company has had to make tough decisions around when to run certain machines, how to stagger production loads and where it can be more strategic with its energy use. Through that process, Kwikot has discovered that one of the most overlooked opportunities is also one of the simplest: how water is heated.

THE ROLE OF INNOVATION:

Finding opportunity in the ordinary

Water heating is often invisible in a factory’s energy audit. But geysers are used more than many realise — for cleaning, sanitation, and staff facilities, and most operate blindly, heating water during peak tariff hours or drawing power even when it’s not needed.

Kwikot piloted a smart water heating system at its own facility, retrofitting the geysers with intelligent controllers that sync heating cycles to off-peak windows and integrate with rooftop solar PV. The impact was immediate. Peak load dropped. Consumption flattened. Staff had hot water regardless of load shedding, and the company’s energy bill shrank.

This kind of intervention may not sound like a game-changer. But multiply it across every geyser in every block of a plant, or across every factory in an industrial park, and the numbers become transformative. While individual results vary,

manufacturers implementing smart water heating consistently report reduced energy bills, improved uptime for staff amenities and greater operational stability

during power interruptions. These are the kinds of everyday wins that accumulate into a more resilient, more competitive production environment.

A DATA-DRIVEN FUTURE:

Real-time control is the new efficiency Smart geyser systems do not just shift load. They provide data, real-time insights into usage patterns, fault detection, leak alerts and performance metrics. For facilities teams, it’s a way to manage risk before it becomes a cost. For CFOs, it’s a pathway to more stable forecasting. At Kwikot, that data has changed how production is planned, how the company engages with insurance partners, and how it communicates with its maintenance crews. It has made the company faster, leaner, and more confident in its resilience.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The manufacturing sector in 2030 and beyond

Globally, the manufacturing sector is moving toward decentralised energy, smart systems, and embedded resilience. South Africa must do the same. By 2030, we’ll be competing

not just on quality or cost, but on how reliably we can deliver.

Manufacturers that embed energy intelligence into their infrastructure today will be better equipped to meet future ESG standards, local content requirements and sustainable development goals.

The next wave of manufacturing growth in South Africa will be defined by how efficiently we can operate in a low-certainty environment. The choices we make now about technology, integration, and energy awareness will define our global competitiveness.

Government incentives for embedded generation and demand-side management are improving. But private sector uptake must

accelerate. Future factories must be designed to flex, to absorb shocks, to scale up during surplus and to throttle back during grid pressure.

THE CALL TO ACTION:

Don’t wait for the grid to recover

Smart water heating may not be the biggest energy gain, but it could be the fastest. It requires minimal capital expenditure, delivers measurable results, and starts shifting culture toward proactive energy management.

At Kwikot, the company believes that resilience begins not with big promises, but with small, smart steps. The solutions exist. The returns are real, and the time to act is now.

Choosing coated abrasives for everyday projects with grinding techniques

Whether your customers are tackling maintenance, painting, or restoration projects at home, the use of coated abrasive products is almost always needed to finish the job.

Sandpaper, available in various grits and configurations, is used for sanding wood, metal or plastic, while emery cloth is suitable for polishing and finishing surfaces.

The difference between paper-backed and emery-backed abrasives lies in their backing material. Paper-backed abrasives, like water and cabinet paper sheets, use paper as a base, while emery-backed abrasives, like clothbacked sanding belts, use a cloth base.

Cloth-backed abrasives are more durable and tear-resistant. The backing allows for more flexibility and can be cut to size, making it ideal for a wider range of sanding and finishing tasks, especially on metal. With greater mechanical resistance, they’re better suited for power tools.

Paper-backed abrasives are more flexible and conform better to curved surfaces. They are generally less expensive and suited for general hand sanding on wood and plastics.

When it comes to surface finishing, thorough preparation is key. This can be done by hand or with the use of an orbital sander.

Wood, paint or lacquer are usually sanded by hand. However, for perfect intermediate sanding with paper-backed abrasives, an orbital sander can be used. For projects like these, Grinding Techniques offers a wide range of water and cabinet paper sheets that allow for easy and flexible operation on virtually any material.

Superflex waterpaper sheets are made of pure silicon carbide grain and are ideal for preparing surfaces on metal, wood, paint and lacquers. A special feature is the latex-covered backing, which makes them suitable for both wet and dry sanding.

Superflex cabinet paper sheets have a semi-open grain distribution on a lighter paper backing. This prevents clogging while still delivering an excellent surface finish.

For sanding and finishing with power tools, the angle grinder is one of the most common tools found in home workshops.

Grinding Techniques offers a comprehensive assortment of flap discs for angle grinders, available in Type 27 and Type 29 configurations.

Type 27 flap discs have a depressed centre design with a fibreglass core backing. This design is suited to maximum material removal with a 15 to 20-degree grinding angle, allowing for greater pressure and a higher removal rate.

Type 29 flap discs have a more linear profile with a fibreglass backing. This shape allows for a grinding angle of 0 to 15 degrees and is better suited for finer surface finishes rather than aggressive stock removal. The fibreglass backing can also be trimmed to expose more abrasive, increasing the disc’s life.

Grinding Techniques also stocks a wide range of Velcro-backed sanding discs for orbital sanders. These offer several advantages, including easy attachment and removal, reuse, and cost-effectiveness. Using a hook-and-loop system, they can be changed quickly and securely, making it easy to switch grit sizes or replace worn discs.

Cloth-backed sanding belts are also very popular and effective for preparing and sanding larger flat surfaces like table tops. Superflex is able to offer custom-made sanding belts for metal or wood processing in various sizes for mini belt grinders (power files), portable belt grinders, and large stationary belt grinders.

Depending on the application, it has the ideal belt for an optimum result whether the need is longevity, maximum stock removal or a perfect surface finish. With their high stock removal rate, belts with embedded abrasive grain offer a quick and easy way of grinding metal. Superflex sanding belts also offer a range of flexible underlays and additional coatings. These allow work on harder materials, such as stainless steel, alloys, structural steel and non-ferrous metals. They can also be used with woods, paints and lacquers.

Superflex not only offers a comprehensive selection of conventional coated abrasives, but also a full range of non-woven or surface conditioning abrasives and a wide variety of cutting and grinding media.

I first walked into Eureka’s premises back in 1990 — a modest yet impressive factory and office in Robertville, Johannesburg. Even then, Eureka stood out. But nothing could have prepared me for what I saw on my most recent visit, 35 years later.

Today, Eureka spans three entire city blocks in Lea Glen — a feat achieved through vision, intensity, and relentless innovation. Eureka has become a true revolution in the South African Hardware market.

Eureka’s innovation is driven by common sense and knowing what consumers want. They’re not just selling fasteners; they’re selling simplicity, convenience, and satisfaction. The original idea — handy quantities of fasteners — was brilliant. The real genius was how this concept also works for retailers.

Their merchandising systems, signage, display units, and colour coding are all geared toward one thing: efficiency.

Eureka Built to last, ready for the future turns 40

easy — to stock, to refill, and to sell

The visual impact of the Eureka concept is a magnet, pulling customers in as they enter a store. Finding the right item is intuitive — no assistance needed. And that simplicity translates directly into higher sales and exceptional returns per square metre.

turning the tables on chinese exports

What truly left me in awe was the manufacturing. I had the privilege of visiting several Eureka factories, and what I saw was astonishing. Eureka is, quite literally, out-Chinesing the Chinese.

They manufacture it all — screws, nails, merchandising stands, containers, locks, door furniture — right here in South Africa. Even their powder coating and galvanising tools and moulds are made in-house.

// Eureka’s innovation is driven by common sense and knowing what consumers want //

“A SOUTH AFRICAN SUCCESS STORY I’VE WATCHED UNFOLD”

// Everything about the Eureka experience screams ‘easy’ - to stock, to restock and most importantly to sell //

In the yard, I saw a truck being loaded with bags of fresh vegetables — one for each of their thousand-plus employees. An initiative that is repeated each week. That’s not a PR stunt. That’s what real commitment to a team looks like. In my opinion, it stems from being family-owned. That human touch extends far beyond their workforce — it's evidenced in how they treat suppliers, stockists, and consumers. Inside the massive warehouse, I watched in amazement as pickers navigated the aisles with trolley units called COWs — short for computers on wheels. It’s tongue-in-cheek, practical, and quintessentially South African. Of course, they were designed and built in-house. But what I witnessed was not just a factory, it was a declaration: South Africa can make world-class products. We don’t need to import everything. When we support local manufacturing, we support local jobs. We build something bigger than just a supply chain.

a supply partner like no other

Eureka drivers don’t just drop off stock — they deliver in reusable ‘pull frames’ and merchandise the product immediately. Eureka understands a simple truth: when customers are happy, retailers are happy. And when retail thrives, we all win. If every supplier operated like Eureka, retailers would rejoice.

looking back — looking forward

I’ve had the privilege of watching this company grow from a bright idea into South Africa’s largest fastener distributor. And they’re not done yet.

The wide range and quality of Eurekas’ Fort Knox mortice locks and padlocks left a lasting impression. The dedication behind this brand could easily make Fort Knox the most loved lock brand in South Africa. Eureka hasn’t just survived over the past 40 years. They’ve redefined what it means to be a supplier.

JOURNEY

celebrating 40 years of build it

From humble beginnings, Build it has grown into a brand with a rich history, built by entrepreneurs, and shaped by countless stories of perseverance and innovation. These entrepreneurs saw more than bricks, mortar, and challenges – they saw opportunities and chose to build legacies.

Over the years, many invaluable lessons, hands-on experiences and inspirational moments have helped define this journey and as we celebrate Build it’s 40th birthday, we pay tribute to a journey that began as a concept within a SPAR store back in 1985, grew to 35 stores by the year 2000 and now proudly stands at 396 stores across Southern Africa.  Trading as a concept within a SPAR store addressed the need for building and farming materials in rural communities. This initiative eventually expanded into several standalone stores in KwaZulu-Natal. As part of the SPAR Group, primarily known for food retail, the future of a building materials business initially seemed uncertain. Some key stakeholders believed the focus should remain on food retailing.

At the same time, SPAR retailers were seeking other business opportunities, but opening more SPAR stores within the community was not an option. Thankfully, the CEO at the time, Peter Hughes, formerly from Federated Timbers — a building materials merchant — was aware that their hardware stores were shutting down and recognised a promising opportunity in building materials retailing. So, the idea of retaining the brand as a business extension became a viable option.

In 1991, there was a renewed opportunity to grow the Build it brand. The business was built on SPAR’s voluntary trading model, and Ray Whitmore from the SPAR Distribution Centre was appointed to ensure the operation aligned with the SPAR model. Rob Lister, the

MD of the official competitor, Cash Build, was appointed in a marketing role to bring in the required industry knowledge. As the business started to grow in KwaZulu-Natal, it was expanded into the inland region, followed by the Western Cape, then the Eastern Cape.  In the early years, Build it stores were limited to mostly rural areas, with the urban markets being dominated by larger building merchants. With the decision to grow the

brand, the Build it logo was redesigned in line with the SPAR logo, also using SPAR’s corporate colours. Alongside the new brand identity, the brand essence of ‘Simplifier’ was developed, with the pay-off line being ‘Making home building simple’, recognising the need to play a role in simplifying the home building process.

By 2005, challenges with recruiting more retailers and negotiations with suppliers became apparent. Build it wasn’t seen as a large, reputable brand. Brand awareness and recognition were limited to the rural areas where the stores were located. It was time to go big. The best way to achieve big brand status and to become known nationally was to appear on television. Build it became the first building materials company to advertise its brand on television with an iconic jingle that got the whole country singing whenever they saw the Build it logo. The ads were launched at the 2005 Convention, themed ‘Sing it Proud, Sing it Loud’.  By 2018, Build it grew considerably. After the appointment of the new MD, Wayne Hook, several strategy workshops were conducted. These led to the decision to refresh the brand, move away from its ‘rural store’ status, and appeal to a broader market, reflecting the changing Southern African landscape. The identity also had to be simpler and more iconic, owning the colour red, which wasn’t the dominant colour in any

JOURNEY

other building materials brand. A new identity was launched with the theme of Bolder, Brighter, Better — perfectly capturing what the new identity was. This bold new identity is quickly becoming iconic, dominating communities, and standing out on roads all over Southern Africa.

A brand is more than just the identity, it is what the customers experience when visiting the stores. So, to build on this identity, a new essence was developed: Yes We Can! It was recognised that the building process is often fraught with challenges beyond the control of the materials supplier. Build it wanted to be the easiest part of the building process by fostering a ‘can-do’ attitude. Yes We Can! also became the pay-off line. To remain authentic to this brand essence, a ‘Yes We Can!’ culture was driven in store by an appointed committee made up of store staff. This move, together with several business initiatives, led to Build it becoming the number one building materials brand in Southern Africa.

Being the number one brand is a challenging position to maintain. With competitors closely watching every move, there’s a constant target on your back. There was a desperate need to stay ahead of the industry. With communities increasingly affected by unregulated traders and poorquality builds, Build it aimed to take on a bigger, more responsible role. The goal is to help customers build ‘better’ by supplying quality building materials and providing better advice and education. This

‘40 for Better’ is our call to action. It’s a challenge to each of us to elevate our standards, innovate boldly and build with even greater purpose

initiative is being driven by their newly developed Winning Aspiration: ‘Being the First Choice Brand for Southern Africans to build, maintain and improve ‘things’ of enduring value’. This aspiration will be driven by several retail operations initiatives, a focused marketing campaign and an aligned customer experience culture, recently launched at the milestone birthday Convention. Build it Managing Director, Hawie du Preez credits the powerful and resilient brand we see today to the hard work, passion and belief of their retail members, supply and service partners, the SPAR Group and countless individuals who have poured their hearts into the brand over the past four decades.

“Together, we’ve built more than a brand and successful businesses — we’ve built communities, earned trust, and established a reputation for quality and service that people depend on. As we celebrate how far we’ve come, we must also look ahead. The world is changing and so must we. We cannot stop here. We cannot settle. We must keep pushing forward and always strive to be better”:

• Better for our customers, who deserve service excellence

• Better for our communities, who look to us for support and inspiration

• Better for our teams, who drive the business forward every single day

• Better as partners, working smarter, faster, and more collaboratively

• Better as a brand that doesn’t just trade but leads.

STORE OPENING

leroy merlin makes affordable diy possible in centurion

Leroy Merlin South Africa set a new milestone in May as they opened their fifth store in Centurion, Pretoria. The flagship 15 000m2 store has been specially designed to meet the needs of South African homeowners and tradespeople, combining quality products with practical solutions and real community impact.

The store opened its doors to the public on 30 May with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. Visitors enjoyed exclusive in-store opening specials, live DIY demonstrations, face painting and balloon artists for the kids, free popcorn, and exciting prize givewaysincluding R10 000 in store vouchers.

Jacaranda FM broadcast live from the bustling parking lot as eager shoppers flocked to the grand opening. The turnout was so overwhelming that finding parking became a 10-minute adventure for many. Visitors to the store entered with great anticipation of unbelievable opening specials and were greeted by friendly staff members handing out pamphlets highlighting the

impressive deals.

The unbeatable deals proved irresistible — remarkably, every visitor made a purchase before leaving. The opening day’s success was evident in both the crowded aisles and the steady stream of satisfied customers exiting with their new purchases.

“This store was more of a milestone in many ways. Besides, it being the fifth store for us in South Africa, it took a record-breaking seven weeks from the time we were given the keys to ensure that the store is set up to the standard that you see today. A lot of staff dedication and commitment was at the centre of this milestone,” says Leroy Merlin omnicommerce leader Claudia Krishna.

Live broadcast by Jacaranda FM from the parking lot.
The balloon arch created a festive feel.

EVENTS

STORE OPENING

Commenting on their expansion strategy, Krishna explained that the Centurion store is the first store to be built in the North of Gauteng. Initially, the company had a strategic expansion plan to open more stores in Gauteng before tapping into the national market strategy. However, through the statistics and trends they have seen in the online store, Leroy Merlin has enjoyed major growth in customers from the coastal areas which may accelerate its national expansion in all provinces.

With only five stores in Gauteng, Leroy Merlin has cemented its position in the hardware industry in South Africa. One of the reasons behind their growth is their ability to engage with customers in the area prior to the building of the store. The Leroy Merlin staff used this opportunity to engage with local compatriots to find out what their needs were.

“This helps Leroy Merlin to align its offerings with the needs of their customers. The store becomes relevant to the area because it builds around the needs of the people in the area. That strategy has helped us in ensuring that we remain competitive in our industry with every store that we open.”

CUSTOMER INVOLVEMENT

Before the grand opening, Leroy Merlin hosted exclusive preview days for customers who had previously shared their needs and preferences with staff. This thoughtful approach allowed the company to confirm that the new store’s design, product selection, and layout successfully addressed the specific feedback collected during the planning phase.

This preview strategy served dual purposes: providing select customers with an exclusive first-hand experience while transforming them into enthusiastic brand ambassadors. By experiencing the store before its official opening, these customers could authentically share their excitement throughout the community, generating valuable anticipation and setting clear expectations for the grand opening event.

“The store is a lifestyle and hardware store. It is not just brick and mortar; it provides homeowners with the opportunity to be involved in their renovation plans as we create the picture of how your kitchen or bathroom can look like. Each section

in the store is intentionally set up so that homeowners get to be part of their home improvement projects.”

The Centurion store highlights Leroy Merlin’s commitment to making home improvement accessible to all. With 60% of products sourced from South African suppliers, the store supports local manufacturing while offering customers quality they can trust. Sustainability sits at the core of the operation, from solar power systems to rainwater harvesting and a strong focus on repair-and-reuse solutions.

The Centurion store features beautifully designed kitchen and bathroom showrooms, displaying Leroy Merlin’s exclusive brands across a range of styles from contemporary to classic. These carefully curated spaces serve as inspiration hubs, helping customers visualise transformation possibilities for their own homes while highlighting the quality and versatility of the retailer’s premium offerings.

“For us, being useful means more than just selling products. It is about sharing knowledge, supporting our communities, and helping South Africans create homes that work better for them and the environment. Our Centurion store brings this commitment to life through everything from skills workshops to our unique Neighbourhood Market,” says Leroy Merlin South Africa CEO Frank Dufourq.

The month-end Neighbourhood Market provides a platform for local makers and traders, with Leroy Merlin taking no commission on sales.

JOB CREATION

The store will create 150 permanent jobs while supporting 20 young South Africans through a specialised internship programme. Customers can look forward to innovative features like the convenient drive-thru building yard for contractors, professional installation services, trailer hire, key cutting, gas refill and an in-store Mugg & Bean where they can relax and plan their projects over coffee.

With existing stores in Fourways, Greenstone, Little Falls and Boksburg, Leroy Merlin continues to grow its presence in South Africa, both through physical stores

Staff preparing to welcome customers.

and its online marketplace that supports local sellers.

“Every home improvement project starts with people –their ideas, their challenges, their dreams. In Centurion, we have built a space where neighbours can share knowledge, where first-time homeowners can gain confidence, and where everyone finds quality solutions that they can afford.”

This growth reflects the brand’s ongoing mission to help South Africans make their home the best place to live.

SPECIALIST CUTTING DISCS

Helping your clients keep the abrasive edge

Does your client need conventional abrasive tools for unconventional applications? Grinding Technique’s range of specialist cutting discs includes two products that not only reduce both time and effort but also enhance safety for these specific applications. Unique in its design, the dual-purpose Superflex Cut and Grind disc is designed to operate safely as both an efficient cutting disc as well as a light grinding disc. Particularly useful for deburring, back grinding of welds, and the cutting and grinding of weld roots in preparation for further welding, this product is ideal for maintenance on pipelines. When it comes to handheld radius and contour cutting, the Superflex Curve Cut enables effortless cutting of circles and curves from sheet metal quickly and

effortlessly. This eliminates the need for additional, specialist tools often used for this purpose in the past. These machines are often large and cumbersome or sometimes operate as a fitting added onto an existing machine, where the Superflex Curve Cut is designed to fit directly onto a conventional right-angle grinder. Typical applications include cutting wheel fenders on custom cars, ellipses in large bore pipes for T-joining and IBR or corrugated roofing to fit curved profiles and installing of extractor fans and turbines.

Suitable for applications on both carbon and stainless steel.
