AI has become a foundational technology in retail, enhancing personalisation, operational efficiency, and workflow optimisation.
With global eCommerce retail sales expected to reach $3.52tn this year (nearly 25% of all retail sales), retailers are under immense pressure to leverage AI for enterprise-scale deployments that improve human-machine collaboration and customer satisfaction, says redPanda Software technical director Niel Coetzee.
Despite the sleek customer-facing applications, many retailers struggle with underlying technical debt. Brittle code, outdated processes, and development cycles that can’t match demand create significant reliability issues. When core systems suffer from inefficiencies or poor code quality, the consequences are immediate and costly: point-of-sale outages, delayed stock updates, and sluggish online checkouts that frustrate customers and drive revenue loss.
The financial impact of poor code extends beyond immediate technical failures. Manual requirement gathering, repetitive documentation, and lengthy review processes consume substantial time and budget before any value-adding functionality is deployed. This creates a critical challenge: retailers need projects delivered in months rather than the traditional 18+ month timelines, but they cannot compromise on quality or reliability.
Retailers find themselves in an unwanted race, needing to deliver new features, stabilise legacy systems, and respond swiftly to operational disruptions — all without adding costs or risks. The pressure to compress 18-month projects into 3–6-month

deliveries while maintaining high quality creates a complex balancing act. In retail, mistakes and bottlenecks don’t just cost time; they erode customer loyalty, trust, and result in direct revenue loss.
AI is revolutionising the development narrative by introducing efficiency at multiple levels:
• REQUIREMENTS AND DESIGN: AI chatbots can distil hours of discussions into structured requirement documents, giving product teams a significant head start
• ARCHITECTURE: AI can generate architecture diagrams and build estimation tools in days instead of weeks
• DEVELOPMENT: Automated code reviewing tools inspect every line of code, flag risks, and suggest fixes
• INTEGRATION: Model Code Protocol (MCP) is transforming how different AI tools collaborate to achieve specific results.
These AI tools maintain consistent momentum without fatigue, enabling retailers to compete effectively in today’s fast-paced market.
The most significant advantage is that AI doesn’t replace development teams — it removes friction, reduces repetition, and helps build stronger code foundations. This human-machine collaboration means projects are delivered faster, features reach customers sooner, and systems become more resilient with inherent code quality.
Success requires staying current with evolving AI trends while ensuring tools add genuine value beyond simple manual task automation. The goal is to embed AI carefully throughout the product development lifecycle with human oversight to maintain security and ethical standards. This approach results in fewer production defects, more predictable delivery, and systems capable of reliable scaling.
AI’s role in retail software delivery continues maturing, with emerging standards enabling AI agents to chain tasks seamlessly from requirement to deployment. Retail leaders face a critical decision: tackle this AI-driven future now or be forced to catch up later. Retail resilience and growth will ultimately depend on the strength of the code beneath the surface, making AI adoption not just beneficial but essential for competitive survival.

When joining a hardware or building materials franchise, factors like brand strength, supplier ties, and financial investment all matter, but nothing shapes your future more than location.

Your store’s location is not only about where you are, but also about who surrounds you. Begin by analysing competition in your area — who are you up against, and how established are they? Consider whether there is room in the market for another entrant or if new developments and housing extensions nearby could drive future demand. The right site positions your business at the heart of customer activity, not on the outskirts of it. Look for high-traffic areas where both contractors and DIY enthusiasts have easy access. Ensure there is ample parking for customers and that delivery trucks can load and unload without blocking roads or bays meant for shoppers. Accessibility must work for everyone — from the professional builder collecting bulk stock to the weekend renovator popping in for supplies.
Visibility is another key consideration. Your
future customers need to see you before they can find you. Choose premises with space for large, clear signage visible from multiple directions. Inside, evaluate whether the building supports a customer-friendly layout.
At TimBuild, franchisees receive a professional store layout tailored to their space — but even so, avoid premises filled with awkward corners that obscure stock, create dark areas, or interrupt the flow of customer movement.
Pay attention to ceiling height, especially if you will be displaying longer-length materials upright. Assess the lighting — between 500 and 800 lux is the ideal range for a bright, welcoming shopping experience. Plan areas for interior signage to guide customers efficiently through departments.
From an operational standpoint, confirm the power supply, as some machinery requires three-phase power. If you plan to stock
building materials, ensure there’s a suitable yard area and a receiving zone for deliveries. Balance security and efficiency — too many entry points increase risk, while too few can cause congestion. Spaces such as paintmixing or cutting areas can be partitioned with drywalling for neatness and safety.
Before signing a lease, agree with the landlord on necessary repairs, painting, and cleaning of the building shell. Opening a store is a major investment — give your franchise the strongest possible start. Success begins with the right location.

With home décor trends, colour plays a vital role in shaping not only the look of a space but also how it makes people feel. For retailers, understanding these emotional connections opens the door to more meaningful sales conversations and smarter merchandising opportunities.
Dulux’s latest Colour of the Year palette, Rhythm of Blues, taps into a growing consumer desire for calm, comfort, and wellbeing at home. With shades that inspire tranquility and balance, retailers can use this trend to encourage their customers to turn every room into a serene retreat.
From soothing bedroom hues to uplifting kitchen tones, blue is the colour of reassurance, and an easy sell for customers looking to refresh their homes while improving their sense of wellbeing. Stocking and showcasing these shades help retailers stay on-trend while also positioning them as trusted advisors in creating happier, healthier living spaces.
Read on to discover how Dulux’s Rhythm of Blues palette brings calm and balance into every room, and how you can inspire your customers to do the same.
Blue is more than just a colour – it is a powerful ally for mental wellbeing. According to colour psychology, blue tones evoke feelings of calm, stability, and serenity, helping to ease stress and promote emotional balance.
In this article, retailers can discover simple yet effective ways to advise their customers on how to introduce blue into every room, creating tranquil spaces that nurture both your customers’ home and their state of mind.

The power of blue - creating a calmer and happier home SIMPLE WAYS TO BRING TRANQUILITY INTO EVERY ROOM
Blue has long been associated with feelings of serenity, stability, and boundlessness. It is the shade of open skies and tranquil seas – symbols of peace, freedom, and limitless possibility.
“Scientific research and Dulux’s own colour experts concur that blue environments can lower stress, slow heart rates, and promote feelings of calm and clarity. Whether deep and meditative or light and airy, blue offers the perfect antidote to the pressures of modern life,’’ advises Dulux colour expert Palesa Ramaisa.
HERE ARE SIMPLE WAYS IN WHICH BLUES CAN BE BROUGHT INTO A HOME:

// Blue is more than just a colour – it is a powerful ally for mental wellbeing //
A tranquil retreat can be created by painting a feature wall in Slow Swing™ (66BB 06/077), a deep, calming indigo. This can be layered with cozy neutral furnishings, linen accents, and warm wood pieces to create an inviting space for unwinding and recharging and truly relaxing after a busy day.

Kitchens can be infused with a breath of fresh air by choosing Mellow Flow for cabinetry or walls — a light, uplifting sky blue that radiates clarity and serenity. This gentle hue brightens the room, making it feel open and welcoming, especially when paired with earthy terracotta and clay accents for a bright, welcoming space that feels calm and inviting, perfect for hosting and entertaining.

Bedrooms can be wrapped in blue, combining Slow Swing and Mellow Flow™ (10BB 39/100) for a layered, cocooning effect. Main walls painted in the deepest shade, Mellow Flow, will draw in lightness and air, while using Slow Swing on the ceiling or trim will create a grounding embrace. When these hues are complemented with crisp white linens, soft blue throws, and natural fibre rugs, the colour combination will echo sky and ocean, setting a serene mood for rest and rejuvenation.

Focus and creativity in the home office or study can be boosted by introducing pops of Free Groove™ (62BB 08/369), a vibrant, lively blue that energises and inspires. To make a statement, desks, shelving, or paint picture frames can be painted in this colour to make the area feel dynamic without overpowering the space. The result will be a workspace that feels both stimulating and soothing, helping with motivation all day.

The new mosque in Lynnfield Park, KwaZulu-Natal and its adjoining boarding establishment is designed to accommodate hundreds of congregants and resident students. Set to become a cultural, educational, and spiritual anchor for its surrounding community, the project team in charge of the construction realised they were building something special.
This meant compromise was not an option and every material selected had to guarantee quality, longevity, and aesthetic excellence. When it came time to finish the kilometres of interior and exterior cement walls and ceilings, the contractors unanimously agreed on one essential specification: SikaWall-165.
The Mosque's design combines sweeping domes, grand archways, and large-format internal spaces — each with exposed cement surfaces that needed to be transformed into smooth, durable, paint-ready finishes.
The boarding facility made it more complex with its long corridors, high-traffic communal areas, and multi-story exterior walls needing to withstand changing weather conditions, moisture, and the wear of daily student life.
Traditional wall putties were tested in early planning, but none delivered the consistency, coverage, or workability needed on such a complex build. Minor failures would result in major expenses across such an expanse. The project needed a product the team could rely on and that is when they turned to SIKA, a brand respected for its reliability in largescale construction. More specifically they turned to the product engineered for this exact purpose — SikaWall-165.
SikaWall-165 is formulated to turn ordinary cement walls and ceilings into smooth, even surfaces ready for painting.

// With SikaWall-165, walls are not just skim coated, they are future proofed //
KEY BENEFITS THAT WON THE PROJECT TEAM OVER:
SUPERIOR SMOOTHNESS AND FINISH
SikaWall-165 delivered a refined, consistent surface across all cement substrates. For large prayer halls and long corridors, this uniformity was essential.
The product mixed easily, spread effortlessly, and allowed contractors to move fast — even when working on massive wall spans or high ceilings.
From the grand dome interiors to the sun-exposed façade of the boarding house, SikaWall-165 performed flawlessly in both environments.
With so many wall sections meeting at joints, arches and decorative details, reliable adhesion ensured no weak spots across the build.
The team wanted a finish that would still look immaculate years from now. SikaWall-165 created a stable base layer that resists fine cracking — a major advantage over many traditional putties.
Once cured, the skim-coated walls allowed painters to achieve rich, even colour with minimal touch-ups. Lower labour costs and faster progress were a welcome bonus.
As the project progressed, the difference in surface quality was undeniable. The prayer hall ceilings gained architectural smoothness, and the dormitory walls’ uniform textures made even simple paint look strikingly refined.
Contractors on-site joked that SikaWall-165 had spoiled them. “After seeing this finish, you can’t go back to ordinary putty again,” commented one of the foremen.
The decision to specify Sika saved the team time, labour, and countless potential headaches. No reworks were necessary, no patching and no surprises. Simply a flawless finish, done right the first time. If a landmark institution trusted SikaWall-165 to deliver a world-class finish across thousands of square metres and some of the most intricate cement surfaces imaginable, why would your customers settle for anything less on their next project?
With Sika, the job is done right the first time.

Paint Club has introduced a fresh take on colour exclusivity with its new Bespoke Colour Collection, available only through Plascon Paint Expert stores nationally.

The curated palette of 30 original colours gives independent retailers something big chains cannot offer – hues developed specifically for South African homes, light, and lifestyle.
Created by Paint Club colour specialists
Annamarie Janse van Rensburg and
Cheryl Lötter in collaboration with Plascon’s formulation team, the collection combines design expertise with performance chemistry.
“I took inspiration from our lovely country, international trends, and added a bit of flair from my favourite artist to create Paint Club’s own unique South African rainbow colours,” says Janse van Rensburg.
Only authorised Paint Expert outlets can tint these colours, using trusted Plascon ranges such as Wall & All, Micatex, Double Velvet, Easy Living, Polvin, and Velvaglo Enamel.
For store owners, that exclusivity means differentiation; for customers, it means colour stories they will not find anywhere else.

The structure helps homeowners and decorators build balanced schemes using the simple 60-30-10 rule – 60% main colour, 30% secondary, 10% accent.

By keeping this collection exclusive to Paint Expert stores, Paint Club strengthens the independent retail channel and reinforces its members’ position as local colour authorities. It is a strategy that values partnership, product knowledge, and community trust over mass-market volume - proving that innovation still lives on the independent shelf.

As South Africa’s retail sector continues its slow but steady rebound, shopping malls are undergoing a quiet transformation, forcing landlords to rethink the fundamentals: foot traffic, tenant mix, and the evolving definition of value, to drive consistent retail recovery.
Despite global headlines predicting the end of brick-and-mortar retail, South Africa’s mall culture has proven otherwise. In fact, statistics tell us that retail trade sales rose by 3.7% in Q2 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. While this is great news for landlords and retailers alike, there is a noticeable shift in what is driving that resilience. Malls are no longer relying solely on legacy anchors or traditional retail formats to stay relevant.
The malls that are thriving are those that have embraced a new kind of anchor tenant; brands that offer affordability, convenience, and broad appeal across diverse income groups. Increasingly, these tenants are not the traditional department stores or fashion chains of the past, but agile, category-specific retailers.
One of the most notable shifts in tenant strategy has been the rise of value-focused retailers as key traffic drivers. These brands, often operating in categories like homeware, hardware, stationery, and lifestyle goods, are filling a gap left by mid-market fashion and department stores.
MR.DIY South Africa business development head Jamie Williams notes that this shift is a delicate balancing act of value and relevance. “We’re seeing a strong demand from consumers across all LSM groups for affordable, everyday essentials. Even higherincome shoppers are looking for value, not cheapness, as they become more conscious about smart spending. This is changing how landlords think about tenancy. They are starting to prioritise retailers that offer consistent footfall and broad appeal, rather than just prestige.”
MR.DIY, a global brand with over 5 000 stores across Asia and Europe, entered the South African market in 2025 with a mall-first strategy. Its first three stores, in Menlyn Park, Irene Village Mall, and Boardwalk Richards Bay, were deliberately positioned in high-traffic centres to build brand visibility and consumer trust.
Williams explains that this top-down approach is about more than just footfall.
“Being in a super-regional mall gives you credibility. It opens doors with other landlords and helps consumers understand what the brand is about.
For mall owners, the appeal of these new tenants goes beyond the monthly rent payment. Value-led retailers often bring a differentiated product mix, high stock-keeping unit counts, and a broad customer base. They also tend to drive repeat visits and longer dwell times, key metrics in a post-pandemic retail environment.
Williams says the response from landlords has been overwhelmingly positive. “Once they see the store in action, they get it. We’ve had a surge in interest from landlords who are looking to refresh their tenant mix and bring something new to their centres.”
This trend reflects a broader shift in how malls are curated. Rather than relying on a handful of large anchors, many centres are now building ecosystems of smaller, high-performing tenants that collectively drive traffic and sales.
While mall partnerships are central to the rollout strategy, location is still at the core of

everything, with retailers prioritising visibility, accessibility, and proximity to transport nodes. In Richards Bay, for example, MR.DIY’s store is located near a taxi rank and train station, ensuring a steady stream of foot traffic from commuters and local shoppers alike.
Adaptability is also key. As retailers gather data from early store performance, they are adjusting product mixes to suit local
demographics. Stores near universities may carry more stationery and tech accessories, while coastal locations might lean into seasonal goods and homeware.
This localisation, however, must be supported by a resilient distribution chain. Williams notes that MR.DIY’s warehouse in Johannesburg allows for rapid replenishment and agile stock management, both critical
considerations in a market where consumer preferences can shift quickly.
South Africa’s retail recovery is far from complete. High unemployment, rising living costs, and load shedding continue to weigh on consumer confidence. But there are green shoots, and they’re growing in the spaces where landlords and retailers are working together to meet evolving needs.
The rise of value-led, convenience-focused tenants is a signal of where the market is heading. For mall owners, it’s an opportunity to future-proof their centres. For retailers, it is a chance to build brand equity in a market that still values the in-person shopping experience.
And for consumers, it is a welcome return to retail that still feels accessible, relevant, and easy on those hard-earned rands.

The 2025 edition of the Rubio Monocoat Heritage Build-Off Auction once again highlighted South Africa’s finest woodworking talent while raising an impressive R202 000 for the Tears Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse.

Now in its second instalment, the event, driven by Rubio Monocoat South Africa and proudly supported by Vermont Sales and its leading brands alongside other sponsors, celebrated the artistry and heart of local makers whose creations exhibited the immense talent this country has to offer.
Under the guidance of Carel Steenkamp, managing director of Rubio Monocoat, thirteen talented makers were challenged to create a unique piece of interior furniture

using wood already on hand and finished with Rubio Monocoat’s new Oil Plus 2C colours. The competition required entrants to design pieces suitable for homes or offices,
displaying both craftsmanship and character. They were given four months to complete their builds, with newcomers facing off against veterans from the first Heritage Build-Off. Once complete, each piece went under the virtual hammer in an online auction that ran throughout September on www.rubiomonocoat.co.za
The makers were invited to select the charity from three options, and by popular choice, the 2025 Build-Off’s chosen beneficiary was the Tears Foundation, a beacon of hope for survivors across South Africa.

a few of the stunning furniture pieces are shown below

The talented lineup of makers included: Abrie von Weilligh, Brandon Scheepers, Bruce Wacher, Francois Smith, Gino Fernandez, Greg Pretorius, Greg Stock, Krijnauw Joubert, Ndandu Khavhadi, Njabulo Shabangu, Suzi McAfee, Taryn-Lee Cockcroft, and Warren Turnbull.
Each creation reflected the maker’s individual vision and style which ranged from modern innovation to beautifully refined traditional design.
The 2025 Heritage Build-Off was made possible through the support of several key sponsors, including:
• Vermont Sales and its powerhouse brands: Tork Craft, Festool, Kreg, Pro-Tech, and Pony Jorgensen
• Klingspor Abrasives
• Roco Fittings
• Visi Magazine
• Maple Street Timbers Kempton Park
• Rubio Monocoat South Africa.
Together, the sponsors helped the competition succeed while highlighting the creativity and dedication at the heart of South African craftsmanship.
The awards ceremony took place on 10 October at the Vermont Sales Exhibition Centre, where makers from around the
country (one even coming straight from a trip to Ireland), sponsors, and guests gathered to acknowledge the success of the event and to honour the winners. Visitors were warmly welcomed with tea, coffee, popcorn, and soft drinks before enjoying a festive lunch to close off the day.
All participants received generous goodie bags, and their works were displayed on-screen as winners were announced.
The maker whose piece raised the most money at auction was crowned the overall winner— and this year, the honour went to Abrie von Weilligh.

In his absence, Carel Steenkamp made a special announcement regarding the next stage of the competition: although the live Build-Off at WoodEX Africa 2026 traditionally features the top three finalists, this year the challenge will instead see joint second-place finishers Suzi McAfee and Greg Stock, along with third-place winner Warren Turnbull, take on the three-day live build.
Each will once again create a unique piece, built live during the show, with all proceeds going to charity.
Representing the Tears Foundation, Anasha Dorey and Theodora Masalesa were present to accept the sizable R202 000 donation, expressing deep gratitude for the life-changing difference it will make in the organisation’s continued work to support survivors of abuse across South Africa.

Beyond the beautiful furniture, the Heritage Build-Off’s impact extended far and wide. Carel Steenkamp highlighted the extensive marketing reach achieved through email and social media campaigns driven by both sponsors and makers, one standout being Greg Stock, whose posts alone achieved over 95 000 views.
Of the thirteen makers, three were women, with Suzi McAfee earning a highly commendable second place finish, proving that South Africa’s woodworking industry is as diverse as it is talented.
With creativity and compassion at its heart, the Rubio Monocoat Heritage Build-Off has become an exciting annual event highlighting South African craftsmanship. Through the support of sponsors like Vermont Sales, this event continues to combine artistry with purpose.
As anticipation builds for the live Build-Off at WoodEX Africa 2026, one thing is certain: when we work together remarkable things are built and many lives are touched.

The annual GR Landmark and Voere Market Day, held at its premises on 1 November 2025, was nothing short of spectacular. Now in its fifth year, the event once again proved why it has become one of the most anticipated fixtures on the local Heidelberg community calendar.

As a proud member of the Essential Hardware Group, GR Landmark and Voere hosted the market day with strong support from Essential Hardware, drawing in crowds of enthusiastic customers, suppliers, and families for a day of fun and most importantly, unbeatable deals.
With prizes worth over R200 000 up for grabs, customers arrived in their numbers. The grand prize, a 10-day stay at the luxurious San Lameer Estate valued at R50 000, was the highlight of the lucky draw. Other major prizes included a Tork Craft Limited Edition Bakkies Botha Trackbox Toolbox valued at R10 000, a Protek Wheelbarrow Hamper worth R5 000, a stunning product hamper including a mix of products from all suppliers, and a Super Ingco voucher draw prize of R10 000.

The event featured an impressive 65 exhibitors, spread both inside the store and outdoors, offering everything from product demos and giveaways to exclusive one-day deals.
Customers could qualify for entry into the prize draw by completing an entry form and collecting stamps from at least 80% of the supplier stands, a fun and interactive way to ensure that visitors experienced the full scope of what the market day had to offer.
OUTDOOR EXHIBITORS INCLUDED: Ashak, Africa Tanks, Agrinet, Antrovet, AVI, Blixem Cleaning, Bioguard Pools, Bosbul Clothing, Brands4Africa, Complete Dog Food, Decakila, Duram, Efekto, Elanco Animal Health, Epol Equine and Animal, Equifeeds, Eurolux, Flash-Harry, Flex, Henkel, Ingco Tools, ITE Cement, Jock Dog Food, Juava Pet Food, L&B Locks, Lasher Tools, Lionel’s Choice Dog Food, Lukas Abrasives, Makita Tools, Matweld/Hikoki, Montego, MSD Animal Health, Nemtek, Pferd, Plenkie Ponkie, Pinnacle Welding, Plusten,
Powafix, Protek, Promac Easycoat, Rubber Duck, Ruwag, Strike-Arc, Swavet, Top Paints, Tork Craft, Voermol, Waco Electrical, Wadfow, Westermans, Woodoc, and Zoetis.
INDOOR EXHIBITORS INCLUDED:
Academy Brushware, Addis, Brands4Africa, Daro, Dromex, GlueDevil, Ingco Tools, Leisurequip, Protek, Rust-Oleum, Starke Ayres, and Strassberger.
Visitors had the opportunity to engage directly with suppliers, explore new product ranges, and access the best deals of the year with hundreds of Market Day only specials. The trolley loads of purchased products exiting the premises was evidence of a highly successful Market Day.
Vermont Sales stood out with an exceptional display featuring Tork Craft, Alpen, D-Tech, Olfa, Energizer and Aircraft. The company offered at least 10% discounts across the board, with the promise to honour discounts even on out-of-stock items, a true show of customer commitment.
Adding to the fun, Vermont hosted a fishing competition at their Energizer stand, complete with giveaways, while any customer purchasing in-store on the day was entered into a draw for a R10 000 hamper.
At the Aircraft stand, a lively darts competition kept visitors entertained, while the Tork Craft stand featured meet-and-greets with rugby legend Bakkies Botha, who also hosted three rugby clinics for under-13s during the day.
Fans put their strength to the test with two additional exciting challenges – a shoulder strength test, where participants had to hold a Trackbox at shoulder height for as long as possible to win one, and a grip strength challenge, where the strongest contender walked away with a Cantilever Toolbox. In addition, shoppers who bought any Tork Craft product in-store between November and December could enter the draw to win a Limited Edition Trackbox signed by Bakkies Botha.
The Market Day was as much about shopping as it was about the community. Families enjoyed a host of activities for children, including pony rides, face painting, jumping

castles and games for all ages.
There was a lively atmosphere throughout the day with cars lining the street, and trolley loads of product purchases, as customers took advantage of incredible specials. The INGCO shop-in-shop was a hive of activity and almost every trolley seemed to include an Ingco product. The till points were buzzing from morning till closing at 2.00pm.
Store owner Kobus Roux, known for his passion for growth, humorously ‘banned himself’ from going into the store during the rush — for fear that seeing the queues would inspire yet another store expansion. His alreadysprawling store covers multiple blocks and continues to thrive.
Several exhibitors hosted their own fun and creative competitions in addition to the discounts offered on the day. These included:
• Blixem Cleaning: Buy any product and choose a gift
• Promac Easycoat and Rubber Duck: Spin the wheel or throw a ball in a bucket to win
• Ruwag: Choose a key to unlock a padlock, guess a combination, or lift a hammer glued to a block to win prizes
• Top Paints: Guess the colour placement for giveaways
• Protek: Spin the wheel for instant prizes
• GlueDevil: Pop a balloon and win.
The Market Day concluded with the announcement of the winners of the Lucky Draw:
• 1st Prize (10 Day Stay at San Lameer) Mariska Morgan
• 2nd Prize (Tork Craft Bakkies Botha Limited Edition Toolbox) Pieter Liebenberg
• 3rd Prize (R5 000 Protek Wheelbarrow) Zelmarie
• 4th Prize (2 500Lt Africa Tank) Marlize Muller.
With its combination of leading brands, fantastic prizes, never to be repeated specials and community spirit, the 2025 GR Landmark and Voere Market Day was a resounding success. From supplier engagement and product education to festive family fun, the event truly showcased the Essential Hardware spirit of customer appreciation.

Vermont Sales’ latest initiative, the Vermont Arts, Crafts and Special Things Expo, took a slightly different approach from its usual trade exhibitions being shorter in duration, and focusing more on the season rather than the product category. This made it rich in festive creativity and retail opportunities.

Running over two months and aimed squarely at the Christmas shopping season, the Expo focused not on a single product category but on a craft and creativity theme, tapping into typical Christmas activities. While the event was nearing completion at the time of going to print, its concept and impact remain highly relevant; the Expo offered retailers fresh ideas and inspiration for boosting festive trade. Vermont Sales’ core mission has always been to help retailers make more money, and this Expo
embodied that goal by showcasing smart, ready-to-implement merchandising and promotional ideas designed to ensure products fly off shelves.
Each stand was customisable by retailer, featuring a clever mix of kits, accessories, and tools ideal for December craft projects and holiday activities. Retailers could see firsthand how Vermont Sales’ wide range of products could be bundled by project, creating themed displays that encourage add-on sales. From ‘this goes with this’
pairings to complete project bundles, the approach offered a simple yet powerful way to drive sales and enhance the in-store experience.
Stands were fully stocked with a Christmas feel, giving retailers a tangible sense of what festive merchandising could look like in their own stores. Vermont Sales went the extra mile, even introducing fun and creative ideas such as advent calendars where tools are hidden behind each window, adding an element of surprise and gift appeal.

The Expo also provided the usual advantages that come with attending a Vermont Sales event:
• Retailers were able to step away from their stores without interruption and truly focus on new opportunities
• They had the chance to see and experience the full Vermont Sales range, including the latest product launches. The Expo created a space to engage with Vermont’s knowledgeable team and network with other retailers and staff members, sharing ideas and strategies for the busy season ahead.
With its combination of inspiration and practical retail solutions, the latest exhibition demonstrated Vermont Sales’ commitment to their retailers.

The sold-out event followed a Scramble Drive format on all holes, with a lively Pink Ball competition adding an extra layer of challenge. Each player had to use the pink ball during their round, rotating between the four teammates, and it needed to still be in play at the end of the day. Scoring was done in a 4-ball alliance format, with two scores counting on par 4s and 5s, and one on par 3s; all played off a 100% handicap (and a 12 handicap for those without one).
One of the day’s highlights was the special massage sponsored hole on the 9th, an unusual but muchappreciated addition where tired golfers could unwind and enjoy some expert treatment from professional Thai masseurs. It was a first for an EST Golf Day and quickly became a crowd favourite.
After a swift prize-giving session in classic EST style, the evening wrapped up with a relaxed dinner, where players mingled, shared laughs, and enjoyed a few well-earned drinks over a delicious meal.
True to EST tradition, the day perfectly balanced fun, friendly competition, and business networkingall while raising awareness and support for cancer-related causes.

In celebration of Cancer Awareness Month this October, EST hosted its annual supplier Golf Day with a vibrant pink twist! Each golfer received a pink golf shirt in support of the cause, creating a striking sea of pink around the course.

Central Build it recently hosted a remarkable charity golf tournament at Glendower Golf Club, bringing together the hardware retailing and supply chain industry for a day that exemplified the industry’s commitment to support its own. The event, held on 24 October 2025, demonstrated once again how the building supplies sector rallies around those who need support and a helping hand.

To add excitement and fun to the day, the theme of the event was Jungle Hats and Pants, and the guests did justice as they put in the effort for all who were present to feel the ‘Jungle Fever’.
The tournament used the exciting ‘Secret Scorecard’ format, which kept participants guessing throughout the day

and added an element of surprise and suspense, making every shot count. With an 11:00 AM shotgun start, players teed off simultaneously across Glendower’s 18 holes, setting the tone for a day of shared energy and friendly competition.
The format proved particularly popular among participants, as it levelled the playing field and ensured that golfers of all skill levels remained engaged throughout.
The response from industry sponsors exceeded all expectations, with suppliers, contractors, and business partners stepping up to support both the event and its charitable goals. Sponsorship opportunities across all 18 holes were quickly snapped up, showing the industry’s willingness to invest in community initiatives.
Local suppliers provided prize donations

that enhanced the competitive element, while major industry partners supported various aspects of the day’s logistics.
The comprehensive R6 500 four-ball entry package included golf shirts, two carts per team, halfway house refreshments, dinner, and participation in the prize-giving ceremony.
“The response from our suppliers was overwhelming. It reinforced what we already knew – this industry does not just talk about supporting each other, we do it,” says Central Build it’s Nikki Schwartz.
The tournament offered valuable networking opportunities within a relaxed, purposedriven environment. Glendower Golf Club’s excellent facilities offered the perfect backdrop for strengthening business relationships while contributing to a worthy cause. The format allowed suppliers, contractors, and retailers to interact in ways that traditional trade events sometimes struggle to achieve.
The tournament’s primary objective centred on raising funds for Justin Talbot's new wheelchair, transforming a workplace challenge into a community-wide solution. Talbot, a long-serving Central Build it team member, required specialised mobility equipment, and the tournament provided an ideal platform for collective industry support. The wheelchair fundraising represented more than financial assistance – it demonstrated the industry’s commitment to ensuring no team member faces difficulties alone.
The successful golf tournament represents just one example of Central Build it’s broader commitment to supporting communities throughout their operational areas. The company has consistently shown that successful business operations and community support complement rather than compete.
“This golf day reflects our ongoing philosophy. We are not just a building supplies company – we are part of the communities we serve. Supporting Talbot was the immediate goal, but building stronger relationships across our industry creates lasting benefits for everyone.”
The company’s approach to community engagement extends beyond individual events, encompassing ongoing partnerships with local organisations, support for employee development, and initiatives that strengthen the broader construction sector’s reputation for social responsibility.

Prize categories included recognition for the Best-Dressed four-ball and Best Sponsor, which was based on the set-up of their sponsored hole on the day to fit in

For better security

As part of its extensive lockset range, SAMSON provides high quality cylinder locksets at affordable prices in both 6” and 8”. With different finishes your clients will have a variety to choose from to suit every need.
Cylinder lock options: Single cylinder VS double cylinder locks.
The cylinder is the locking mechanism of an entry door set. It may be integrated with a deadbolt of a mortise lock or mounted independently as part of a separate deadbolt. There are two types of cylinder locks commonly used for residential applications. A ‘single’

cylinder lock is operated from the outside with a key, and from inside with a thumb-turn. One can secure the door from inside, as well as exit the house without a key, making this the most popular option.
A ‘double’ cylinder lock is operated with a key from both inside and outside. While such locks provide added security for doors with glass panels or sidelights, they prevent egress without a key.
Although all SAMSON cylinder locksets come prepacked with a double cylinder mechanism, they also provide a thumb turn lock to buy separately.
