navigating uncertainty amid global turmoil

As we close Q1 of 2026, the global economy faces significant challenges. The ongoing conflict between Iran and the US has sent shockwaves through oil markets, driving prices to unprecedented highs. This volatility has sparked widespread panic and has created uncertainty that threatens economic stability both globally and locally.

For South Africa, the ripple effects are particularly concerning. The rising oil prices are likely to strain the economy, weaken the rand, and impact consumer confidence. With inflationary pressures mounting, businesses and consumers alike may need to brace themselves for tougher times ahead.

However, hardware retailers may present a degree of resilience — and even opportunity. As households and businesses become more cost-conscious, there is often a shift away from large-scale new builds or discretionary

spending toward maintenance, repair, and incremental upgrades. This ‘fix rather than replace’ mindset can drive steady demand for essential tools, building materials, and DIY solutions.

In these uncertain times, adaptability and resilience will be key.

In this issue, our Retail Guide looks into safety and protective gear (page 33); read up on Kwikot’s energy efficient gas heater (page 54); and EST gives us details on how the township economy is a growth engine for South Africa (page 58).

HOW TO CONVERT INDePENDENT STORES WITHOUT LOSING BRAND EQUITY

Many successful hardware and buildware retailers reach a point where the question arises: How do we take the business to the next level? For some, the answer lies in conversion franchising – the process of transforming an independent store into part of an established franchise network.

Conversion franchising allows an existing retailer to retain the strengths they have built over years — loyal customers, local reputation, and industry experience — while gaining access to the systems, support and buying power of a larger brand. When done correctly, it is not about replacing your identity but strengthening it.

One of the most important considerations is brand alignment. Retailers often worry that joining a franchise means losing the value of the name they have spent years building. Many franchise groups offer flexible naming options where the existing store name can be incorporated alongside the franchise brand. For example, a store may trade as ‘TimBuild Smith Hardware.’ This approach allows retailers to keep the trust and recognition they have built locally, while clearly communicating their new affiliation with a national brand.

However, a successful conversion requires proper planning and sufficient capital. Upgrading signage, refreshing shelving, and implementing new merchandising systems are essential parts of the process. A franchise conversion should never be limited to simply replacing the sign outside. It is a valuable opportunity to refresh the entire retail environment — from store layout and racking to internal signage and product ranges. The goal is to create a store that reflects the professionalism and consistency of the franchise brand while improving the overall shopping experience.

Communication with customers is equally important. Long-standing customers need

reassurance that the business they trust is still run by the same team. Editorials in local media, targeted advertising and customer appreciation days are effective ways to introduce the new brand while reinforcing familiar relationships. At the same time, joining a franchise opens the door to reaching new and previously untapped markets through stronger marketing, broader product ranges, and national brand recognition.

At TimBuild, we understand that independent retailers have invested years building businesses they are proud of. Becoming part of a franchise network should always add value — strengthening what already exists, never detracting from it.

RETAIL MATTERS

Company growth paves the way for a new leadership vision at Bob

eCommerce in South Africa is on a rapid growth trajectory, transforming how consumers shop and how businesses operate – and South African eCommerce platform Bob is positioning itself to meet this surge with the appointment of a new CEO.

A 2025 report by World Wide Worx shows how rapidly South Africa’s online retail market has grown over the past few years. eCommerce made up less than 1% of total national retail sales in the early stages of development. By 2023, that share had increased to 6%, with online turnover reaching R71bn. Growth accelerated in 2024, when online retail expanded by 35% to an estimated R96bn, accounting for 8% of total retail sales. The report further projected that by the end of 2025, online sales were expected to exceed R130bn and move close to 10% of the national retail market.

BOB MOVES TO CAPTURE SOUTH AFRICA’S ECOMMERCE GROWTH

Against this backdrop of accelerating market momentum, Bob – a South African digital commerce company that integrates marketplace, payments, shipping and collection services under one brand – has appointed Anita Erasmus as CEO Designate, effective 01 March 2026. She will serve in this capacity for a six-month transition period, working closely with co-founder and MD Andy Higgins to ensure a smooth leadership handover, before formally assuming the role on 01 September 2026 as part of the company’s broader leadership evolution. Higgins will transition into the role of executive director of Strategy and chief of Payments, where he will focus on advancing the company’s payment service, Bob Pay, and leading long-term strategic initiatives. The appointment marks a key moment for the business as it enters a new phase of operational maturity. Following its strategic rebrand to Bob in 2023, the company has sharpened its focus on delivering an

integrated commerce experience designed to simplify how South Africans buy, sell, pay, and deliver online.

“This is a pivotal moment for Bob because we are entering a new phase of growth and maturity as a business,” says Higgins. “With a strong foundation in our product, culture, and market position, the focus now shifts towards strengthening what works, deepening our impact, and leading Bob confidently into its next chapter.”

DRIVING BOB’S NEXT PHASE OF GROWTH

Erasmus brings deep institutional knowledge and nearly a decade of experience across the ecommerce and logistics sectors. She previously served as head of Business at Bob, where she led the day-to-day operations of the company’s shipping service.

During her tenure, she played a key role in expanding the company’s Bob Go logistics offering, achieving significant shipment growth, with the business now processing more shipments in a single day than it did in a full month at the start of her involvement. Her operational leadership has also contributed to the development of strong courier partnerships and a customer-centric logistics infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Erasmus says that her priority will be delivering sustainable growth and operational excellence. “My vision for Bob’s next phase is simple – growth, and meaningful growth. Our focus is on serving more customers, solving important problems, and increasing the value we create in the market, while remaining disciplined so that expenses do not grow at the same pace as gross profit.”

Higgins says the leadership realignment allows the organisation to leverage complementary strengths while positioning the company for sustained growth. “This moment is about finding the right balance of continuity and evolution. Having been with us for nearly a decade, Anita understands the DNA of this company better than anyone. She has consistently demonstrated the ability to turn high-level vision into practical execution, which is exactly what Bob needs as we move from our foundational phase into purposeful growth.”

As part of its continued growth strategy, the company will focus on platform integration across its services, operational efficiency, and innovation to enable seamless digital commerce experiences and strengthen South Africa’s entrepreneurial

BATTERY GARDEN TOOLS ESSENTIAL INSIGHTS FOR SMALL-SPACE GARDENERS

Rising urban density and smaller living spaces are reshaping how people garden and care for their outdoor areas. Battery-powered garden tools, once considered a niche alternative to corded and petrol models, are increasingly seen as a practical and accessible choice for smaller gardens.

According to Husqvarna South Africa marketing manager Timothy Isabirye, many first-time buyers of battery tools are initially hesitant, unsure whether the technology can provide enough torque and runtime for everyday tasks. “Battery anxiety is natural, and we often hear this concern. It usually comes from comparing battery tools to petrol models, which are built for long, uninterrupted sessions. But that level of power is not necessary for small outdoor

areas or shorter maintenance sessions,” he says.

Isabirye explains that runtime – the amount of time a battery-powered tool can work on a single charge – depends on the type of tool, the task, and how it is used. Often, though, figures quoted on the box or in product specifications are based on ideal conditions and may not fully reflect real-world performance. That said, advances in lithium-ion battery technology have substantially improved

power, time between charges, and ease of use, making battery tools an excellent choice for many everyday gardening tasks in compact spaces.

“For smaller gardens such as those in townhouses, garden flats, and compact suburban properties – a single fully charged battery is generally enough to handle routine jobs: trimming lawn edges, blowing leaves from a patio or driveway, pruning small shrubs or branches, and light lawn maintenance,” notes Isabirye.

FEATURE

“Certain tasks,” he adds, “such as mowing a very thick or overgrown lawn or trimming hedges with dense branches, do draw more power. Simple habits, however, can help extend runtimes – keeping tool blades clean, working at a steady pace, using the right tool for the job, and avoiding overworking the equipment.”

Battery-powered tools offer other clear advantages, besides runtime and convenience. They are quieter, which matters when gardens are close to neighbours, and cleaner, with no petrol fumes. Their lighter, easier-to-handle design requires less effort while still delivering expected performance. Their compact size also makes them simple to store and a natural fit for smaller properties, aligning garden care with the realities of modern living.

“The bottom line is that when selecting a battery-powered garden tool, it’s important to

focus on practical efficiency rather than maximum power,” advises Isabirye. “Choose tools that are compatible with your garden

// Battery-powered tools are convenient and quieter which matters when your customer's gardens are close to neighbours //

and suited to the tasks you regularly perform. This allows you to complete chores comfortably and efficiently, ensuring the best balance of performance, convenience, and ease of use.”

The Husqvarna Aspire™ range of compact, affordable, batterypowered garden tools is built on these principles. Additionally, the range’s 18V lithium-ion battery powers multiple Aspire toolsfrom pruner and hedge trimmer to grass trimmer, mower, and blower.

“Best of all, this battery is compatible with certain other partner brands through the Power For All Alliance – a shared battery ecosystem. This removes the need for multiple batteries, reducing costs and saving storage space – because ultimately, the smartest garden tools don’t necessarily have to be the most powerful, just the most practical solution for your needs,” concludes Isabirye,

Unlocking the power of colour in children’s bedrooms

HELPING RETAILERS SUPPORT GROWTH-FOCUSED HOME DESIGN

As families settle into the school year, many parents look to refresh their children’s bedrooms to better support learning, creativity, and emotional wellbeing. For paint retailers, this presents a valuable opportunity to guide customers and position colour as a practical design tool.

While desks, storage and study accessories are often prioritised, wall colour remains one of the most influential – and often underestimated – elements in a child’s room. Strategic colour recommendations can help retailers offer meaningful advice that drives premium paint sales and complementary décor purchases.

According to Palesa Ramaisa, Dulux Colour Expert, colour is far more than a decorative choice – it plays a role in emotional regulation and developmental support. When retailers help customers select colours with intention, they add real value to the buying experience and strengthen customer loyalty.

// With the right merchandising, colour tools and staff training, children’s bedroom projects can become a consistent and profitable category for paint retailers //

For calm, focused learning and better sleep

Soft blues such as Limoges Blue 30BG 56/045, paired with Burmese Beige 40YY 51/084 and Pictured Rocks 10YR 28/072, create a sense of calm and support concentration. Blue tones are widely associated with improved focus, making them ideal for study areas or full bedroom applications. Suggest a pairing with warm cream accents and natural wood tones to create a balanced sanctuary. For a small room customers can use Dulux Luxurious Silk to paint one feature wall in calming blue while adding pops of colour through textiles, paintings, and accessories. This layered approach also allows parents to refresh accessories as their child grows, encouraging repeat visits without a full repaint.

FEATURE

For balance, focus and emotional resilience

Soft greens such as Green Grove 70YY 18/152, paired with Pacific Pines 90YY 35/169 and Pictured Rocks 10YR 28/072, offer balance and stability - qualities many parents seek during academically demanding years. Green is linked to stress reduction and growth mindset, making it ideal for children managing academic pressure or emotional challenges. For parents to create a restorative environment, recommend that customers use green either as the primary wall colour or suggest they introduce it through plants, wall art, and textured fabrics. The calming effect will be enhanced when paired with soft whites and natural textures

For creative expression and joyful energy

Warm coral-peach tones such as Santa Rosa 10YR 37/143, combined with Pictured Rocks 10YR 28/072 and Bitter Creek 00YY 21/321, encourage imaginative play and creative thinking without overwhelming a space.

Unlike bright reds these colours will not overstimulate but will encourage playfulness and self-expression while remaining emotionally grounding.

Encourage customers to use this colour strategically – on an accent wall or through creative elements like a painted bookshelf or activity nook. When combined with soft yellow and earthy greens, the palette creates a nurturing space that celebrates individuality and encourages artistic expression.

Supporting retailers through colour expertise

Today, children’s bedrooms serve multiple functions: study space, creative hub and personal retreat. Retailers who understand colour psychology can confidently recommend solutions that support these needs. Once positioned as trusted advisors rather than just paint suppliers, customers will keep returning.

By guiding customers toward purposeful colour choices retailers can:

• Increase average transaction values

• Encourage premium product upgrades

• Drive complementary accessory sales

• Build long-term customer relationships.

GEDORE has perfected workshop organisation and storage with its premium workshop products, exemplifying the brand’s commitment to quality, durability and precision engineering.

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE

THE CRUCIAL ROLE OF EXPERTS IN SECURING SOUTH AFRICA'S WATER INFRASTRUCTURE

In his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Ramaphosa highlighted water, and crime as the two main areas of focus for the government in the coming months. In addressing the water crisis, the president had no choice but to acknowledge the root causes of the problem: poor planning, inadequate maintenance, and years of neglect by many municipalities.

As President Ramaphosa rightly pointed out, “There is no silver bullet to address this challenge, which has its roots in systemic failures and many years of neglecting infrastructure”.

The announcement of a National Water Crisis Committee, chaired by the President himself, marks a significant step, says Kwikot MD Murray Crow. However, the focus now shifts to implementation and ensuring that these new efforts translate into meaningful change.

YEARS OF NEGLECT HAVE BROUGHT US HERE

South Africa’s water crisis didn’t happen overnight. If water infrastructure is properly installed and maintained, it should serve communities for decades without major failures. However, years of poor maintenance and delayed action have pushed our water systems to the brink. The country is now facing the consequences of years of neglect, and the reality is clear: we should never have allowed ourselves to get to this point. Only now, when the systems are under strain, does the issue become urgent. We are left to face the bill for this delay. A staggering R400bn needed to fix the backlog in our worst-performing municipalities, as confirmed by Dr Sean Phillips, director-general.

The price of not maintaining infrastructure is not just financial — it is a crisis that impacts millions of South Africans. And once again, it’s the people who will bear the cost of this neglect.

THE SHORTAGE OF SKILLED WORKERS IN THE TRADE SECTOR

Another significant issue that needs attention is the shortage of skilled trade workers. South Africa is in desperate need of more qualified professionals to maintain and repair its water infrastructure. From plumbers to pipe fitters, these workers are essential to addressing the growing crisis. Without an adequate supply of skilled tradespeople, we cannot hope to fix the infrastructure problems we are facing. The future of South Africa’s water systems depends on building a robust workforce of trained professionals.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO SOLVING THE CRISIS

The establishment of the National Water Crisis Committee, chaired by President Ramaphosa, is an important

step forward. Modelled on the National Energy Crisis Committee, this new initiative could be the catalyst for change. However, one key question remains: who will be on this committee?

The water crisis is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive, integrated solution. We cannot simply address the symptoms; we must focus on longterm solutions. This means investing in infrastructure maintenance, ensuring that technical experts are included in decisionmaking, and building the next generation of skilled trade workers. These are the foundational steps needed for future-proof South Africa’s water security.

URGING COLLABORATION FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

To address this crisis effectively, the government must collaborate with industry professionals, engineers, and skilled tradespeople. By working together, we can ensure that the right solutions are put in place to avoid future water crises. The time to act is now. We cannot afford to wait any longer or continue with temporary fixes. “The lessons of the past should have taught us the importance of proactive planning and strategic investment. By working together, we can ensure that South Africa’s water infrastructure remains strong, sustainable, and resilient for future generations. The future of our water systems depends on the actions we take today,” Crow concludes.

Murray Crow, Kwikot MD.

Energy efficiency meets performance with the Kwikot Sirius Gas Water Heater

As energy efficiency and performance become increasingly important to homeowners, the Kwikot Sirius Outdoor Fan Forced Gas Water Heater offers retailers an exciting solution.

Designed specifically for outdoor installation, this advanced on-demand system delivers reliable hot water while helping consumers reduce both energy consumption and monthly utility costs.

Unlike conventional storage water heaters that continuously use electricity to maintain water temperature, the Sirius operates on a demand-driven basis. The unit activates only when hot water is needed, heating water instantly as it flows through the system. By eliminating standby heat loss, homeowners benefit from meaningful energy savings and lower running costs without compromising on comfort.

The system is also engineered with user convenience in mind. Optional temperature control settings allow different areas of the home such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries, to be set to appropriate temperature levels. This ensures a consistent

and comfortable hot water experience across multiple outlets, even during periods of fluctuating demand.

Energy efficiency remains central to the Sirius design. Its low-power heating operation maintains strong performance while minimising overall consumption.

For retailers targeting energy-conscious consumers, the unit’s solar compatibility adds further value, enabling integration with existing or new Solar thermal systems as part of a broader sustainability offering.

At the heart of the system is Kwikot’s GasSaver™ technology, developed to optimise gas usage and improve overall heating efficiency. Combined with intelligent constant-temperature control and a water servo valve, the unit supports stable water temperatures regardless of variations in demand, reinforcing its suitability for modern, multi-outlet households.

The inclusion of DC Fan Oxygenation Technology further enhances combustion efficiency while supporting safe operation. This advanced fan system contributes to improved performance and reliability, particularly in varying outdoor conditions. Durability is another key strength.

Designed specifically for exterior installation, the Sirius features a robust operating system engineered for long-term performance. Its weather-resistant construction ensures dependable functionality across a range of environmental conditions, making it well suited to South African climates.

Safety and intelligent operation are integral to the design. The dual CPU protection system has undergone more than 250 000 reliability tests, underscoring its dependable performance standards. In addition, an intelligent safety self-check system continuously monitors the unit’s operation, helping to keep safe and stable functionality over time.

For hardware retailers, the Kwikot Sirius Outdoor Fan Forced Gas Water Heater represents a premium, energy-efficient hot water solution that aligns with growing consumer demand for cost savings, sustainability, and performance.

The Future of Aerosol Spray Paint

Rust-Oleum Low Odour launches in April, disrupting the local market with a

The South African aerosol sector is undergoing a significant shift as Rust-Oleum introduces its latest water-based innovation. This new range provides a high-performance alternative to traditional spray paints, addressing the growing trade demand for user-friendly, low-chemical products that don't sacrifice durability.

REDUCED CHEMICALS, GREATER VERSATILITY

A key advantage is a 40% reduction in odour compared to standard solvent-based sprays. By reducing harsh solvent fumes, the product makes spray painting more comfortable where ventilation is limited or lingering chemical smells are undesirable.

The result is a cleaner aerosol solution that improves user comfort while still delivering a durable finish.

PROFESSIONAL GRADE EFFICIENCY

The product is designed for fast application. Rapid recoating: Two coats are recommended for best results and can be applied at any time without waiting periods, shortening project timelines. Easy clean-up: As a water-based formulation, wet overspray or spills can be cleaned with soap and water. Once fully dry a solvent may still be required.

Substrate versatility: The paint adheres to wood, metal, glass and most plastics, with maximum adhesion on plastics achieved after five to seven days

water-based range.

STRATEGIC LAUNCH RANGE

The launch includes two colours - Blackout and Snow White available in Gloss and Matt. For retailers, the launch represents a pivotal move towards more user-friendly water-based coatings technology in South Africa.

est and the township economy

WHERE INDEPENDENT RETAIL MEETS SOUTH AFRICA’S FASTEST-GROWING MARKETS

South Africa’s township economy is no longer a side note in the country’s retail landscape. It is a primary growth engine: dense, active, competitive, and commercially sophisticated.

From Soweto to Mdantsane, Umlazi to Khayelitsha, township markets have evolved into powerful retail ecosystems driven by frequency of trade, community trust, and high product turnover. Urbanisation trends reinforce this shift. According to Statista, more than 68% of South Africa’s population now lives in urban areas, with continued migration toward metropolitan and peri-urban nodes. In 2023, 68.82% of South Africans resided in urban areas – a number that continues to rise.

At the same time, research from Standard Bank estimates that the township informal economy is valued at over R900bn annually. That figure alone reframes the narrative. This is not an emerging market. It is an established one — often under-structured, but far from underperforming.

For independent retailers operating inside these communities, or urban-based stores supplying them, the opportunity is clear. The question is not whether demand exists. It is whether retailers are positioned to convert that demand into a sustainable margin.

That is where structured buying groups like Elite Star Trading (EST) enter the conversation.

TOWNSHIP RETAIL: BEYOND THE STEREOTYPES

Township retail is frequently misunderstood. It is often described as low income or low margin.

In practice, it operates on a different economic rhythm:

• High-density customer bases

• High-frequency basket purchases

• Relationship-led trading

• Immediate price visibility

• Rapid word-of-mouth feedback loops.

Statistics South Africa’s household expenditure data shows that poorer households allocate a

significantly larger percentage of their annual expenditure to food compared to non-poor households — approximately 34% of total expenditure versus 10% among higher-income households. That concentration of spending in essential FMCG categories is precisely what drives volume-based retail performance.

In township environments, stock turns matter more than showroom space. Reliability matters more than décor. Price sensitivity is real — but so is brand loyalty when trust is established.

For DIY and hardware retailers in these areas, the same principles apply. Ongoing residential upgrades, backyard rental expansions, RDP extensions, and informal contractor activity continue to generate consistent demand for building materials and hardware products. Trade & Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS) has repeatedly noted the link between small-scale construction activity and local economic resilience.

The demand exists. The complexity lies in procurement.

THE STRUCTURAL PRESSURE ON INDEPENDENT RETAILERS

Independent retailers inside township markets often operate without the advantages enjoyed by national chains:

• Limited buying power

• Higher per-unit procurement costs

• Supplier inconsistency

• Volatile cash flow

• Reduced rebate access

• Exposure to inflationary pressure.

In high-turnover environments, even a 2%–5% improvement in margin can determine whether a store reinvests, or stalls.

With food inflation continuing to exert pressure on household budgets, price competition becomes intense. Independent retailers who purchase stock at higher cost than larger chains are forced into an uncomfortable position: either reduce margin or lose competitiveness. Collective negotiation changes that equation.

WHERE EST STRENGTHENS THE TOWNSHIP RETAIL MODEL

Elite Star Trading operates as a voluntary buying group serving independent retailers across Southern Africa. Importantly, EST members operate both inside township economies and from surrounding urban hubs supplying them.

The model is straightforward: members buy better because they buy together.

This collective leverage translates into:

• Negotiated supplier pricing

• Structured trading terms

• Improved rebate mechanisms

• Strengthened supplier relationships

• Industry collaboration.

For township-based retailers, this creates parity without sacrificing independence.

Unlike franchise systems, EST does not impose corporate identity or operational control. Retailers retain their store brand, pricing discretion and community relationships. What changes is their procurement strength.

In township contexts, where community reputation is everything, that balance between autonomy and alignment is critical.

A MULTI-SECTOR OPPORTUNITY

The township economy is not limited to one retail format.

SPAZA SHOPS SCALING UP

Many spaza operators are transitioning into mini-supermarkets. Their growth is often constrained not by demand, but by inconsistent supplier access and volatile pricing. Collective buying structures stabilise stock access and improve margin predictability.

GENERAL DEALERS AND FMCG RETAILERS

These stores function as anchor businesses within communities. Improved procurement terms allow them to expand product range while maintaining price competitiveness against mall-based retailers.

HARDWARE AND BUILDING MATERIALS

Residential expansion and informal contractor networks continue to drive demand for cement, roofing materials, tools and finishing products. Reliable supply chains and improved rebates

strengthen these stores’ ability to compete. In each case, the underlying issue is the same: structured buying improves resilience.

LESSONS FROM INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP

At the recent EST Year-End Supplier Breakfast, industry leaders emphasised themes that resonate strongly within township retail:

• Stability in volatile markets

• Long-term supplier partnerships

• Data-led trading decisions

• Strategic collaboration over isolation.

Independent retailers who align themselves strategically, rather than operate alone, consistently outperform over time.

This principle is magnified in township economies, where rapid scale is possible, but sustainability requires operational structure.

MARGIN PROTECTION IN A PRICESENSITIVE ENVIRONMENT

Township consumers are highly price aware. Price adjustments are noticed immediately and discussed openly. This transparency forces efficiency.

Access to negotiated supplier terms allows retailers to:

• Maintain competitive shelf pricing

• Protect gross margin

• Absorb cost fluctuations

• Plan stock purchases with greater certainty.

Without structured procurement, independent retailers carry disproportionate inflation risk.

In environments where transport costs and supply chain disruption remain realities, stability becomes a strategic asset.

CREDIBILITY AND FORMALISATION

For entrepreneurs transitioning from informal to formal retail operations, alignment with an established buying group signals seriousness and growth intent.

This credibility assists when:

• Negotiating supplier accounts

• Engaging with financial institutions

• Expanding store footprint

• Attracting larger suppliers.

Township entrepreneurs are not short on ambition. What many look for is structured leverage.

THE TOWNSHIP ECONOMY IS ESTABLISHED - NOT EMERGING

The language used around township retail often implies that it is ‘developing’. In reality, it is mature, resilient, and commercially active.

It is:

• Cash-driven

• Community-centred

• High-frequency

• Relationship-based

• Adaptable.

The entrepreneurs operating in these markets are not waiting for opportunity. They are already trading at scale.

The differentiator is a procurement structure.

EST does not replace entrepreneurial instinct. It strengthens it.

South Africa’s township economy represents one of the country’s most dynamic retail landscapes. The density, demand, and entrepreneurial energy are already present. What independent retailers often lack is not vision, it is collective leverage.

For township-based retailers, and for urban suppliers servicing township markets, structured alignment through a buying group can deliver:

• Stronger margins

• More predictable supply chains

• Improved supplier relationships

• Long-term sustainability.

In highly competitive local markets, independence remains valuable. But isolation is expensive.

Strategic alignment is not a concession. It is a growth strategy.

From precision hand and power tools to specialist accessories, the range is engineered for reliability under pressure, and this is exactly the environment motocross and cross-country racing demand.

The brand’s purpose-built Track Box system, designed specifically for mobile workshop applications, is perfectly suited to race-day conditions. Compact, organised, and durable, it allows riders and mechanics to keep essential tools secure, accessible and transport ready.

The all-new Tork Craft Husqvarna Junior Team selected its riders purely on merit following their standout performances in 2025. Reigning 65cc African, national, and regional champion Rayden Woolls steps up to ride a Tork Craft Husqvarna in the 85cc class for 2026, starting at the Terra Topia National that took place at the end of February. Second in both the National and regional Ladies Motocross championships last year, Mackenzie Bam is looking to shift to the top step of the podium on her new Tork Craft Husqvarna. And 2025 85cc shooting star Kabelo Ledwaba moves up to the High School class aboard a Tork Craft Racing Husqvarna 125 for 2026.

Moving over to Cross Country, 65cc star Ruald Potgieter started 2026 by winning the recent 85cc GXCC Gauteng regionals as he prepares for the National season ahead aboard his Sigmafix Tork Craft Yamaha. New recruit Ulrich Sterley’s Sigmafix Tork Craft Yamaha also won the 65cc class, while High School competitor Murray Smith made a winning start aboard his Sigmafix Tork Craft Yamaha YZ125.

Maddy Malan returns to fly the Sigmafix Tork Craft flag in the open OR1 class aboard his Yamaha YZ450FX for 2026. Tyron Beverley also returns aboard his OR3 Sigmafix Tork Craft Yamaha YZ250FX, while Senior men’s GXCC winner Marco Cocci, Gerhard Vorster and Master rider Warrick van Schalkwyk will race Sigmafix Tork Craft Yamaha YZ450FXs.

“Team Tork Craft is looking forward to a thrilling 2026 season. All the very best to Tony and Harry and their teams for an incredible season in the saddle,” Hunt concludes.

For retailers, this is not just sponsorship, it serves as real-world product validation in a high-performance environment. When tools perform under race pressure, they earn credibility on workshop benches and hardware shelves across South Africa.

BACK TO WORK EXPO: Open to Anyone with a Passion for Tools

Known for its regular hands-on exhibitions that showcase the latest innovations across its extensive portfolio of tool and accessory brands, Vermont Sales has taken a slightly different approach with its latest ‘Let’s Get South Africa Back to Work Expo’.

This time, the doors are open not only to industry professionals but also to anyone with a passion for tools, accessories and the worksite. Hosted at the company’s Midrand Expo Centre, the Back to Work Expo is designed to empower the construction, trade and home improvement sectors by bringing together professionals, retailers and end-users in a hands-on environment where products can be seen, tested and experienced in action.

While the event continues to serve the trade by offering valuable exposure to Vermont’s extensive product portfolio, it also welcomes DIY enthusiasts and home improvers who want to explore professionalgrade tools and accessories. From hardware retailers, builders and contractors to workshop buyers, tradespeople and DIY users, visitors are invited to explore the full scope of what the company offers.

The expo showcases many of Vermont’s leading brands and product categories. Visitors can experience the full breadth of the tool offering, from precision drilling solutions such as Alpen and Drill Doctor to professional power tools and accessories from Tork Craft. Woodworking specialists can explore solutions from Festool, Kreg, SawStop and D-Tech, while additional categories include cutting tools from OLFA, power solutions from Energizer, compressed air systems from AirCraft and GAV, as well as heating tools from Bernzomatic and specialist solutions from Souber Tools.

A key attraction of the expo is the opportunity for visitors to get hands-on with the equipment. Attendees can handle the tools, see live demonstrations and test products themselves. This interactive format allows visitors to discuss practical applications with knowledgeable staff and receive expert advice to help them choose the right solutions for their workshop, job site or retail environment.

The format has also proven particularly valuable for retailers. Many dealers have been bringing their own end-user customers to the expo or sending them through independently, allowing them to experience the products first-hand while still purchasing through their retailer at special pricing. This approach helps strengthen the retailer–customer relationship while giving end-users greater confidence in their purchasing decisions.

The event has also been beneficial for new retail partners who may not yet be familiar with the full scope of the Vermont Sales range. By visiting the expo, these retailers gain a clearer understanding of the company’s extensive brand portfolio and can also see the scale of stock holdings available, reinforcing confidence in Vermont’s ability to supply orders consistently.

Following the strong response from visitors and partners alike, the company has confirmed that the expo will continue running at least through to the end of May.

The Vermont Back to Work Expo is open on weekdays from 08:00 to 17:00, with Saturday visits available by arrangement. Refreshments are provided, but booking is essential .
