ANALYSING POLLUTANTS IN SPERM WHALE BLUBBER As top predators in the food chain, marine mammals are known to accumulate particularly high levels of persistent organic pollutants. In a new study, scientists analyse the contamination pattern of polyhalogenated compounds in sperm whale blubber. Polyhalogenated organic compounds include many toxic and carcinogenic industrial chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins (PCDDs). Manufacturers use these in a vast array of products from wood treatments, cosmetics, medicines, food wrapping, furniture, vehicles, plastics, clothing, paints and foams. They are also heavily used in pest control. But because many polyhalogenated compounds are very stable, their extensive use has evoked serious concerns over their potential long-term environmental impact – particularly due to their bioaccumulation in the food chain. From 2001 to 2017, 22 compounds and compound classes were classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by the Stockholm Convention, an international board that aims to ban or restrict their synthesis. AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN Marine mammals are known to bioaccumulate particularly high concentrations of POPs in their blubber tissues, but surprisingly little detail is known about the pattern of contaminants. In a new study, scientists at the University of Hohenheim in Germany carried out a thorough analysis of the polyhalogenated compounds in sperm whale blubber tissue. The team extracted a 750g blubber sample from a 10- to 15-year-old whale, which had been stranded and died on the German North Sea coast in January 2016. It was in good health condition and well-nourished, with an autopsy confirming that its diet had comprised mainly of squid, along with other species. After repeated acid treatment to break down and remove the lipids, the researchers separated the remaining polyhalogenated compounds into 73 fractions by counter-current chromatography (CCC). They then carried out gas chromatography with electron capture negative ion mass spectrometry (GC/ ECNI-MS) on each fraction to identify and quantify as many of the chemicals as possible. The team relied on water prepared with ELGA’s PURELAB Classic water purification system, reducing the risk of their results being affected by trace contaminants.

DETECTING MORE CONTAMINANTS THAN EVER BEFORE The scientists found that major contaminating polyhalogenated compounds in the sperm whale blubber sample were the so-called ‘classic’ POPs, which include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and DDTrelated compounds, whose major application era was two or three decades ago. Due to the sensitivity of their analytical technique, the team also detected several compounds that have never, or scarcely ever, been detected in living organisms. For example, many of the total 90 PCBs they identified were new or rarely seen before, with the high number of this group of compounds suggesting they are even more widespread in the oceans than previously thought. And they were also able to detect small concentrations of newer pollutants, such as brominated flame retardants, indicating that these chemicals

are not yet as widely distributed in the marine environment as the classic POPs. This study demonstrates that the combination of CCC followed by GC/ECNIMS analysis enables the sensitive detection of many more polyhalogenated compounds than other approaches, which is particularly important for detecting and identifying many of the emerging pollutants more recently introduced into the ecosystem. With South Africa traditionally being a dry country and with governments around the world starting to clamp down on environmental matters, now is the time to consider changing from a water-driven venturi vacuum pump to a different technology. Flywheel pump prevents damage to infrastructure L

ocal pump manufacturer, KSB Pumps and Valves, showed off its world-class engineering ability recently when it was called upon to develop a unique flywheel water pump system able to continue pumping long enough to mitigate the possible effects of water hammer in the event of power failures. Ruan Nel, KSB Pumps and Valves project engineer, explains that the pump was developed for the rural Tsomo District Municipality where it is required for critical high-lift pumping of potable water to supply water transfer requirements. Due to unstable electricity supply the municipality, however, required a solution to prevent the potentially catastrophic backward rush of water in the event of a power failure that could lead to water hammer and the destruction of its water infrastructure. This required the technical team to develop a reliable and failsafe method of maintaining water pressure long enough to reconnect power, or in the event of no availability of power, to (gradually) slow down and arrest the flow without air bubble-causing cavitation. Due to the rural location of the pump station, the team also needed to develop a reliable solution with minimal maintenance requirements.

The system allows laboratories to consistently meet and exceed limits of detection when quantifying pesticide residues and other contaminants in food, using GC-MS/MS methods set forth by worldwide regulatory agencies/ authorities. Hundreds of pesticides are in use throughout the world, and with other emerging contaminants regularly coming to the attention of regulatory authorities, laboratories need to be able to accurately detect and quantify pesticides in a variety of food types, and GC-MS/MS - along with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) - is the preferred technique of choice for the majority.

High RPM “The requirement for a flow of 380 cubic metres of water per hour, at differential height of 261m with an efficiency of 80.8%, called for a powerful pump and motor combination with the addition of a heavy flywheel. “Weighing in at 681kg each, the flywheels spin up to 3 000rpm and provide enough momentum to pump water for at least four minutes after power is interrupted. Mating to the pump also required careful engineering requiring self-centring ball bearings able to withstand high pressure, as well as special grease to allow for the high rpm. Operational bearing temperatures was tested to remain at 19-21°C during extended operation. The system also uses a variable speed drive (VSD) to synchronise the motor, pump and flywheel speeds and makes use of specialised couplings to ensure the transfer of energy between the motor and flywheel remains seamless at all times, including start-up, power outages and restart while the flywheels are still turning. The system also required a heavy-duty base plate made from channel-type steel and reinforced around the flywheel plumber block pedestal, similar to large industrial baseplates, and ensures the system remains perfectly balanced at all times.

South Africa’s used oil re-refining challenges T

he used oil industry in South Africa is thriving - out of 243 million litres of new oil sold per annum, 120 million litres is collected for recycling. However, currently only 10% of the used oil collected is re-refined back into base oil, with most being partially processed for fuel oil, to be used in furnaces, kilns and burners. Meanwhile, internationally, there is a significant trend towards re-refining back to base oil with the environmental case carrying weight, as South Africa struggles to transition towards a re-refining model. The lubricants industry’s recycling organisation, the ROSE Foundation (Recycling Oil Saves the Environment), would ideally like to see South Africa follow in the footsteps of the global movement towards re-refining most used oil collected back to base oil. ROSE CEO, Bubele Nyiba, explains that environmentally re-refining used oil is the ultimate solution, “Re-refining means less utilisation of natural resources; emissions of carcinogenic compounds through re-refining are 15 times lower; there is a very low production of pollutants; CO2 emissions from re-refining are two times lower; and re-refining offers an effective conservation of synthetic base oil compounds.” Internationally, global warming and environmental pollution has intensified awareness of the need to recycle resources and to extend the lifespan of manufactured products. “Coupled with the obvious environmental benefits of re-refining, there are potential economic benefits South Africa has an over-reliance on baseoil imports, which can carry long lead times and are impacted by exchange rates,

logistics, weather patterns, port operations, etc. All of which make re-refining an appealing choice for us,” says Nyiba. SOUTH AFRICA’S RE-REFINING CHALLENGES “Unfortunately, even though South Africa needs to move more towards re-refining, the local market is driven on price and it is very expensive to set up a plant to produce high quality re-refined base oil. Installing the re-refining infrastructure runs into the millions and very few businesses can afford an outlay of this magnitude. “Coupled with this are several other factors that inhibit the growth of the re-refining industry: we have a very high demand for burner fuels in South Africa; there are no government incentives supporting re-refining or products made from re-refined base oil; and power costs are high, which impacts on the energyintensive processes involved in the generation of hydrogen (via electrolysis) and other re-refining plant operations.” Nyiba also notes that re-refining facilities need to run 24/7 to be cost effective, and the quantity of used oil currently being collected in South Africa may not guarantee a steady flow to the re-refinery. “We have world-class re-refining plants already operating in South Africa, but even they have to import used oil from neighbouring countries to sustain a steady supply to their plants. Europe has a very high level of environmental awareness they label their re-refined base oil with environmental endorsements. Our market is primarily driven on price,

and re-refined oil needs to compete on price with virgin oil.” Nyiba explains that the European Union’s Waste Directive strongly favours re-refining over burning for energy recovery. As a result, it is thought that re-refined base oils could meet nearly a quarter of Europe’s base oil demand by 2020. “The international trend of refining the majority of used oil back to base oil is exciting, but unfortunately it is premature for a developing country like South Africa because of the prohibitive cost of the technology and developing the necessary processes. “While South Africa may not yet be able to adopt a European approach to used oil, a future imagined sees a focus on a closed loop and circular economy, which will see all used oil, emulsions and used ethylene glycol being collected for processing back into base oils, flux oils and fuel oils, which will be mixed, blended and filled into finished lubricant products for various uses," concludes Nyiba. Can bacteria help clean up nanoparticles from wastewater? By Dr Alison Halliday

ilver nanoparticles are being added to a growing number of everyday consumer products, with many inevitably finding their way into the environment. A new study examines whether living bacterial biofilms can help with their removal during the wastewater treatment process. Nowadays, manufacturers are incorporating engineered nanoparticles into thousands of products - such as cosmetics, sunscreens, clothing and food packaging - to enhance their existing properties or add new benefits, such as an improved texture or a longer shelf-life. Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) are one of the largest and fastestgrowing categories, due to their powerful anti-microbial properties and relatively low cost. But a large proportion of these tiny particles are inevitably released into wastewater, with many ultimately ending up in the environment. Here, they can accumulate in crops and aquatic life, with potential knock-on implications from their subsequent transfer through the food chain. Innovative approaches will be necessary to tackle this new man-made threat to our environment.

Bacterial biofilms - friend or foe? Biofilms are communities of microorganisms that attach to each other and often to surfaces, such as the inside of pipes. Ubiquitous in aquatic environments, once established they extrude molecules that form an extracellular matrix that offers them protection and makes their removal especially difficult. In the laboratory, biofilms are particularly bad news. They can be an ongoing source of contamination since bacteria, along with their associated endotoxins and nucleases, are released in unpredictable bursts. But on the other hand, engineers at wastewater treatment plants can make use of biofilms by integrating them into existing processes to improve capacity by as much as 200%. As a potential way of curbing their flow into the environment, researchers are now looking at whether bacterial biofilms can help remove engineered nanoparticles from wastewater. Sifting out the silver In a new study, scientists at the University of Arkansas explore whether living biofilms of bacteria can successfully remove Ag-NPs from wastewater.1 The team made Ag-NPs in the laboratory, taking great care to avoid introducing contaminants during

The researchers then created artificial biofilms using different combinations of four species of bacteria typically found in wastewater. They then carried out a series of carefully controlled laboratory experiments to investigate the ability of their biofilms to accumulate Ag-NPs from synthetic wastewater. The best combination They found that a biofilm composed of two species, A. calcoacetius and D. acidovorans, accumulated the highest concentrations of Ag-NPs. In further tests, they determined that small concentrations of Ag-NPs attach to the biofilm and are subsequently released. Given the dynamic nature of living biofilms, the phenomena of Ag-NP accumulation within the biofilm and their subsequent release is valuable knowledge that will also help to improve understanding of biofilm-nanoparticles interactions in other systems.

Thermometry - the better method to determine total sodium in foodstuffs

commonly used method for quantifying sodium in foodstuffs is to determine the counter-ion chloride using argentometric titration, the concentration of which can be used to deduce the sodium concentration from the 1:1 stoichiometry of sodium chloride. This method involves errors because sodium is not only present with chloride as the counter-ion. A new method for direct titration of sodium with thermometric endpoint detection solves this problem. Thermometric titration shares with potentiometric titration the use of a sensor to detect the endpoint of the titration reaction. In the case of thermometric titration, however, the sensor is a fast responding thermometer. Hence, instead of measuring the electrochemical potential in the solution, this robust, highly sensitive thermometer tracks the reaction enthalpy, i.e. the temperature change in the solution.

The endpoint of the titration is marked precisely by the moment when the reaction stops, and no significant temperature change is registered any longer in the solution. Because it relies merely on a change of solution temperature to find the endpoint, there is no need to calibrate the sensor. Sensor maintenance is minimal, and it can be stored dry between titrations. fficient and reliable monitoring of low concentrations of various impurities in pure water treatment is critical for microelectronics and powercycle chemistry applications. Silica monitoring for water purity Thornton’s silica analyser uses colorimetric technology to identify silica contamination in pure water. Controlling silica is critical in power plants because silica carryover in steam can deposit on turbine blades, greatly reducing efficiency and causing imbalance of turbine blades. It is also very difficult to remove and can cause cracking and failure of turbine blades. Silica contamination in water used for microelectronics production processes can cause rejection of produced goods. On-line, ppb-level chloride and sulphate monitoring Thornton’s innovative chloride and sulphate

analyser uses microfluidic capillary electrophoresis, an ionic separation technology, to directly measure trace levels of harmful sulphate and chloride ions. With online measurements every 45 minutes, the analyser automatically performs direct chloride and sulphate measurements in the water/steam cycle, allowing immediate detection of sample contamination. The most important point in the cycle is at the turbine inlet, to ensure that only acceptable levels of chlorides and sulphates enter with the steam into the turbine.

Monitoring corrosive anions in ultra-supercritical steam-electric power plants

orrosive anions are a notorious enemy of steam-electric power plants, eating away at pipes, turbine blades and rotors.

Continuous monitoring of those anions down to the ultra-trace range is therefore a must in any such facility. Since even traces of those anions can

have devastating consequences in such facilities, detection limits of as low as 0.5 to 5 µg/L (about a hundred times lower than in subcritical power plants) need to be met in ultra-supercritical plants. The Metrohm Online IC systems features include Inline Pre-concentration and Inline Matrix elimination. Online analysis takes place in the process itself, and no sampling is required as the system is fed directly and continuously via a bypass in the process - in this case, at the water-steam circuit. Metrohm has installed three such systems at the new Kusile power station.

THEME 1: Times of uncertainty

The theme dominating the SA investment landscape at present is probably that of uncertainty. No doubt something that many are tired of hearing about by now, as financial media has made countless references to uncertainty being the driver behind the poor market performance locally. But to contextualise: Investors base their decisions to either invest directly into an economy or via financial markets on a set of long-term objectives unique to them. They have an almost infinite number of investment options from which they can choose and therefore endeavour to choose the investment that they believe will best balance their appetite for risk with their expectation for return.

THEME 2: Recession time

The next major theme is that of decelerating GDP growth. SA’s GDP growth forecast has been cut from 1.5% for 2018 to 0.7%, with the economy shrinking a seasonally adjusted annualised 0.7% in the second quarter, following a 2.6% contraction in the first quarter. According to economist Mike Schüssler, and the BankservAfrica Economic Transaction Index (BETI) September report, GDP could well have picked up somewhat in August – maybe even enough to have put an end to the technical recession. But he warns that the uptick in the BETI was mainly due to backdated “salary increases for civil servants in July and August, and the late salary adjustments of Eskom employees and some municipal workers. We may still see delayed backdated payments occur

When things like the leadership of arguably one of the most important ministries in a country can change so abruptly, it becomes difficult to forecast what conditions are going to be five or ten years from now. Therefore, investors are reliant on the recent past as a frame of reference. Thus far that frame of reference indicates that the leadership structures in our government are unstable and unpredictable. Even though we now have a very strong and credible finance minister in the form of Tito Mboweni, given the recent track record we cannot at all be certain that he is going to still be around in a few years from now. Add to that the rhetoric around land expropriation without compensation; failing state-owned enterprises in constant need of taxpayer-funded bail-outs; growing discontent towards government from the public; our ailing economy; excessively high unemployment; and all the various external fears and shocks caused by the pull-back in international markets… Ladies and gentlemen, we have a recipe for uncertainty about the future. Put more simply, we have a lot of risk and no way of knowing whether that risk will reward investors in accordance with their expectations for returns. This theme has had a major influence on our economy over the last two years. This is best reflected in the decline in foreign direct investment in SA since 2016. SA: R30.20 (incl. What density? W

hether dealing with the concentration or the mixing ratio, the density of liquid media is of high importance in many processes, such as in the food or chemical industry. Instrotech is able to offer Kobold’s DWF mechanical density meter, specifically for the monitoring and continuous measurement of liquid media and two-phase liquids. Once it is calibrated to the respective medium, the density is measured by means of a float and transmitted to the outside without magnetic contact. Even multi-phase media can be safely managed with this measuring principle. At 1% of the measuring range, the repeatability and linearity of the robust field device is very high. The stainless steel or Hastelloy instrument can stand medium temperatures up to 150°C and pressures up to PN 40. Three different sizes, ranging from a maximum of 2 500L/h to a maximum of 10 000L/h, make it possible to optimally adjust the system to the respective task. Here, the nominal widths of the process connections are DN 25 for the smaller device and DN 50 for the two larger devices.

An easy-to-read mechanical indicator is located directly on the measuring device. The electrical output signal 4 - 20 mA is for remote transmission. Additional limit value contacts can also expand the application possibilities as needed with the respective switch outputs and a transducer with communication protocols such as HART, Profibus PA, or Foundation Fieldbus. With an IP 65 degree of protection, the highquality and robust measurement instrument is very well designed for a harsh process environment. It fulfils the industrial norms and standards and is certified for use in explosive areas. The membrane is compatible with most aqueous solutions and tested for use in cell culture applications.
