February is the month of ‘lurve’! It’s easy to get swept along in the euphoria of Valentine’s Day, but St Valentine’s story is actually one of a rather different kind of passion – a passion which led to his death. In our politically correct culture it’s hard to relate to someone who died for what they believe, but that’s the more sober moment we’re engaging with when we remember the life of St Valentine. When you’re picking out chocolates, flowers and trinkets for the one you love it’s perhaps not the best time to try to focus on a dead saint, but it would be good for us to take a moment to think about what’s really important in life. ‘Focus on your A friend recently suggested to me nearest and that true faith is dearest and something that you’d be willing what really to die for, even matters in if you wonder whether you’d your life’ have the courage to go through with it when it comes to that moment. This might all sound a bit heavy, but the reality is that it’s the message of our modern Valentine’s Day too. Beneath the tacky gifts lies a strong reminder of what’s important in life. Rather than focusing on ourselves, Valentine’s Day shifts our gaze to our nearest and dearest, and helps us remember what made us fall in love. It helps us think about the most important person in our lives. So, while it’s the perfect time to give your beloved something special, perhaps it’s also the ideal occasion to have a look at what is really important. Your life comes down to the sum of your relationships and the most important ones you have should be your focus this month. Take some time to sit with your special valentine and your Saviour, and remember what life’s really all about.
