This Christmas in St. Louis homeless men, women, and children will sleep in vacant buildings, on park benches, and at bus stops. They sleep in the woods in Jefferson County, St. Charles County, and St. Louis County. In Springfield, the homeless sleep near the railroad tracks or just lie down on the sidewalks. In towns throughout Illinois, the homeless can be found almost anywhere. The homeless can be found in every city in America. I was one of the first apprentices to join the New Life Evangelistic Center’s Residential Leadership Training Program (RLTP). Before I entered this life changing program, I was a frightened, confused African American teenager. I lived with my mother and sister in one of the worst tenement slums in Saint Louis. It was not unusual for me to lie in bed and hear gunshots, people screaming for help, outside my window. Without a father, I was lost, lonely--without direction, without purpose. When I am asked why isn’t more being done for the 50,000 homeless people in Missouri and the millions scattered throughout the rest of the United States, one word quickly comes to mind…Fear. swered me! I was given NLEC’s Zoa Free Paper, which talked about a new life with God and offered a training program. This residential leadership training program was FREE! The NLEC headquarters was then located at 2107 Park Ave. only a 1/2 mile from my roach and mice, crime, and drug infested ghetto. I knew in my heart that God was leading me to NLEC.
