DEAR FRIENDS, Thank you for joining us for our first virtual Working Wonders for Tufts Medical Center as we celebrate our patients, our frontline caregivers and employees and supporters like you who help us to deliver exceptional health care to our neighbors, friends and family through your generous participation in our signature event.
Tonight, we proudly recognize the work of our Level 1 Trauma Center, where patients with life-threatening injuries have the best possible chance for survival as a result of the highly-specialized skills of our trauma surgeons, optimal resources in critical care and advanced research and training programs. We hope you enjoy meeting Amy Westgate and Pat McQuade, patients whose lives were saved by our multidisciplinary trauma team. We are thankful to Amy and Pat and their families for their strength, determination and willingness to share their inspiring stories of survival. We are also thankful to Emily Riemer from WCVB NewsCenter 5 for graciously hosting our program, to our honorary event co-chairs, Peggy and Gene McQuade, for their generous support and to the special guests you will hear from this evening for their steadfast commitment to Tufts Medical Center.
As our first hospital-wide celebration in more than a year, we would be remiss if we did not dedicate Working Wonders 2021 to our entire Tufts Medical Center and Tufts Children’s Hospital family. From the beginning of the pandemic to today, every member of our family, whether a frontline worker or an employee who supports our caregiving operations, has come together to achieve our single goal: to save as many lives as possible. Through unprecedented challenges, they have given fully of themselves, responding to the extraordinary needs of a large number of critically ill patients, providing each of these individuals and their family members with the highest quality care and the great compassion and respect that they deserve.
We are proud to be able to call these incredible health care professionals our colleagues. And we are grateful to you for your commitment to our lifesaving work. Without your support and advocacy, many of our promising efforts in clinical care, research and medical education would not be possible. We invite you to join us for a bright future, as we continue our mission to save and improve the lives of the patients we have the privilege to care for while doing our part to make our society a better place, by helping to transform health care accessibility, delivery and outcomes for everyone, everywhere. ABOUT TUFTS MEDICAL CENTER Tufts Medical Center is a not-for-profit, academic medical center with 415-beds, providing world-class care in all medical specialties for adults and for children at our Tufts Children’s Hospital (formerly Floating Hospital for Children). Delivering world-class patient care We are known for the highly complex, multidisciplinary care we provide to many of the sickest patients in our region. The overall acuity of Tufts Medical Center’s patients is greater than that of any other hospital in Massachusetts. We perform the most heart transplants in New England and earned the highest outcomes score from the national Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. We also perform kidney and bone marrow transplants, are a certified level I trauma center for adults and children and offer leading-edge cancer treatments for adults and children.

Transforming lives through research We have unique insights into the problems of health care— the most complex diseases and injuries, and the disparities, inefficiencies and other issues that affect the delivery of high-quality care. Our research enterprise is in the top 10 percent of independent institutions receiving federal research funding, and we are home to four nationally recognized research institutes dedicated to cardiovascular disease, mother and child health, clinical and translational science and antimicrobial resistance—infectious diseases that are resistant to currently available treatments.
Educating new generations of leaders in medicine As the principal teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine, we educate the new physicians who will bring the best clinical standards and research into practice, in our local communities and across the globe.

Improving health care delivery through the Wellforce health system As a founding member of Wellforce, we are leaders in the delivery of distributed health care, to help ensure that patients everywhere can receive the benefits of academic medicine, and in a frictionless and cost-effective way. Patients are treated within their community whenever possible; those with the most complex conditions are treated at our Boston campus. At Wellforce’s community hospitals in Lowell and Melrose, our specialists staff key units, including critical care, pediatrics, neurosurgery and vascular surgery. Our work includes bringing leading clinical trials into the communities where patients live.
