Once upon a time, the words “breaking news” actually meant something in the media landscape. It certainly made everyone sit up and take notice on 11 September 2001 when it flashed up on our television screens as we witnessed, first-hand, the incredible Al-Qaeda terrorist attacks on the United States. Years before, the effect was just as similar when the people’s princess, Diana, died tragically on 31 August 1997. Unfortunately, that adage has lost its gloss over the past decade. And, even more so today. Every morning, at every half-hour junction, there appears to be “breaking news” on programs such as Sunrise and Today. It also bobbed up during Sunday’s NRL match of the round, between the Penrith Panthers and Wests Tigers, on NBN Television. But, the viewer didn’t find out what was so important until the half-time break and, when it was revealed, the original story had appeared online four hours earlier. All sections of the industry, whether it’s print or broadcast, have been guilty of over-playing the meaning. It’s just a shame web clicks/shock value are now more important than substance, especially when people are ravenous for reliable information in a COVID-19-impacted world.

It feels like the Hunter is forgotten, says educator “I think it is forgotten that we’re right there on the frontline as well.” That’s the sentiment from early childhood educator Ashley Greene. As director of The Learning Terrace in Port Stephens, she knows all too well the impact COVID-19 is having on the education sector.

As part of the lockdown across the state, to keep their staff and families safe the centre is only allowing children of essential workers to attend. “At the moment our focus is just making sure that the community is as safe as possible,” Ms Greene told

However, the eligibility requirements for it are a little bit shocking to me. “For instance, someone who is getting a single parent payment isn’t eligible for the full payment even though they’ve lost the same number of hours as everyone else and their single parent payment doesn’t increase.” When asked if the government was doing enough to support the sector, Ms Greene was quick to answer with a “no”. “If you are in a Sydney LGA and you are an early childhood educator you will have priority access to the

Pfizer vaccine and we still do not have that here,” she explained. “It just kind of feels like the Hunter is somewhat forgotten, as most of regional NSW is.” Ms Greene added it seems like people were overlooking the fact they were on the frontline as well. “I am certainly not trying to take away from other sectors who are on the frontline, nurses, doctors, emergency services etc are all extremely important and respected but everyone forgets that early childhood is still open, it still operates, and we’re exposed to quite a large number of people each day,” she said. “We are following all the precautions, we’re wearing masks, we’re doing all of that, but we have a pretty high exposure rate.” - Elizabeth Symington

Deputy Premier defends regional lockdown plan The message from NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro is clear – we are on a knife’s edge and must take all the necessary steps to stop the spread of COVID-19. His words come after it was announced on Thursday 26 August the lockdown across regional NSW

would be extended until Friday 10 September. “A two-week extension gives us a bit more time, we will be looking at a regional approach over the next fortnight again but we will make those decisions based on the health advice,” he said.

He added that nothing would change over the extension period. “We put the two weeks in place for the sole purpose of just having a breather while we still keep an eye on everything,” Mr Barilaro said. “Parts of regional NSW will still have an opportunity to get out of lockdown earlier and sooner. “I still want to give hope to the regions that we are not yet completely tied to what is happening here in Sydney.” Despite some upset residents in areas of the Upper Hunter that have no cases, such as Scone, Muswellbrook and Merriwa, Mr Barilaro says the decision was made to protect locals. “You can’t just be an island surrounded by cases,” he said. “You’ve got cases in Cessnock, in Lake Macquarie, [and in]

Family business springs into action The seedlings and flower beds at Little Tin Shed Medowie are being readied for what is the farm’s busiest time of year. The family-owned business has been growing fruits, vegetables and flowers for the past three decades and expects this year to be no different. “Spring involves a lot of

planting,” Daniel Harris said. “Prior to the season, a lot of it is preparing seedlings in our glasshouses, so the minute that spring comes and the ground is warm enough, we can get those seedlings planted.” As son of the current owner Graham Harris, Daniel says it’s the family legacy that keeps them

passionate about the work. “It’s been four generations; it is something we’ve always known, and we have a lot of skills,” Daniel said. He adds they sell out of flowers whenever they are advertised and lots of people stop by to buy fruit and veggies. “The community has been great, if it wasn’t for them the farm would not be a success,” Daniel said. When it comes to preparing your own gardens, he’s quick to offer his best tip. “Grow things when they are in season, a lot of people try to grow things when they are not and it doesn’t matter how hard you try, you will fail,” he said. The book includes boating information, safety advice, features and attractions, how to get there, potential hazards, history, wind and weather, as well as food, entertainment and accommodation ideas. “Everything you need to know about Lake Macquarie is in one place,” Mr Baines said. The book is thanks to a Queensland vacation. While on holiday in the Whitsundays years ago, Mr Baines and his wife chartered a boat to explore the islands. During this time the former naval architect took advice from what he says queenslanders refer to as “the bible for boaters”. When he returned home he searched for a similar book about Lake Macquarie, to no avail.

“I wanted to showcase the lake and show people parts of it that they might not have otherwise known about,” he said. “If I can make one person that lives on one side of the lake, explore and discover something they did not know about the other side, then I feel it’s been worth it.” Two and a half years in the making, the book focuses on 20 locations surrounding the country’s largest saltwater lake. Since receiving the first copies of the book last week, orders have been “frantic”. All proceeds will help fund Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie operations. Reach Homeless Services are now offering breakfast packs for those most in need. Filled with a piece of fruit, juice, a healthy bar, a box of sultanas, and a milk drink, the packs are being distributed through Islington’s Suspension Espresso cafe. “Breakfast” comes discreetly contained within a brown paper bag, topped off with a free takeaway coffee from the Beaumont Street address – all in a bid to start the day with a smile. Reach executive director Gary Parsisson says providing the day’s first meal to those who might otherwise go without, was an idea born from a gap in the system. The coffee and breakfast packs are the brainchild of Suspension Espresso owner and Reach director Chris Johnston, an idea he’s been working on for some time. “After City of Newcastle (council) offered us access to some COVID emergency relief funds, we decided to create these breakfast packs to make sure our city’s homeless were starting their day with a decent feed,” Gary says.

Discretion was deliberate. “There’s no labels on the bags, no fanfare, no stigma, nothing that reeks of desperation, they’re just a brown paper bag with some good food inside,” Gary says. “The breakfast costs us about $2.50 and it gives someone a good start to the day, which is priceless.” The group currently distributes 60 to 70 packs a week. They’re available every day and complement the regular Friday night service offering care packs from the Commonwealth Bank Hamilton carpark. “I prefer to use the term ‘disconnected’ rather than ‘homeless’,” Gary says. “It’s not just about sleeping on street corners sheltering under newspaper, sometimes it’s living in overcrowded conditions, or in a boarding house, or in a car. “It’s about doing it a bit tough, so we’re never going to ask someone to prove their circumstances to us. “If you need it, it’s yours.” Go to reachnewcastle.com.au for more details. - Rebecca Riddle

A renewed push to pardon ‘child killer’ A group of eminent scientists is again pushing for the release of convicted Hunter child killer Kathleen Folbigg, citing a miscarriage of justice. The Singleton mother was found guilty of murdering her three infant children, Patrick Allen (eight months), Sarah Kathleen (10 months) and Laura Elizabeth (19 months), more than two decades ago. She was also sentenced for the manslaughter of her son Caleb Gibson (19 days). The deaths took place between 1989 and 1999. Although jailed for 30 years, Folbigg maintains her innocence, claiming the quartet died from natural causes. Now, leading Australian

scientists are lobbying the NSW Attorney-General to recommend a pardon for Folbigg. The renewed call for her release comes almost six months after 90 eminent experts submitted a petition to NSW Governor Margaret Beazley, who’s waiting for advice from AG Mark Speakman. The evidence includes latest peer-reviewed genetic findings by an international team of 27 scientists published in a top international cardiology journal, Europace, in November 2020. It showed two of Folbigg’s children had genetic mutations that predisposed them to sudden death in childhood from lethal heart arrhythmias.

NSW Environmental Trust Restoration and Rehabilitation Grants Applications are now open for grants to support community organisations and government entities working to protect, conserve and restore the natural environment of NSW.

Novocastrian Lauren Parker has been heartbreakingly denied a Paralympics gold medal in the women’s triathlon, finishing second by just 0.01 seconds. The Hunter-based star was overtaken by American Kendall Gretsch in the closing metres of the PTWC triathlon at the Odaiba Marine Park on Sunday. Parker was an elite ablebodied triathlete before a training accident in 2017 and she transitioned to become the reigning world champion in the women’s PTWC. The 32-year-old was first out of the 750m swim leg and managed to hold her position through the 20km cycle and into the fivekilometre wheelchair/run leg. She lost crucial time, however, when she got stuck behind another athlete she was lapping during the run. Gresch, who won gold medals in the biathlon and cross-country skiing at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, surged near the finish line. “I just put my head down and went for it – I knew she was coming,” Parker said after the race. “I did the best I could, but got

stuck behind one of the girls on that last U-turn (in the final event, the wheelchair race) and lost a few seconds there. “I knew I had to pull my head down on that finish line. “It wasn’t to be for the gold but I am proud of my silver.” A Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in 2018, won just 11 months after her accident, Parker said she was satisfied with her efforts in Tokyo and rated her swim leg as one of the best she had raced. “I had a great swim, the best swim I have ever had,” she admitted. “I felt awesome in the water. “I got onto the bike, which is my strongest event… and I just went hard from start to finish on that bike to get as big a lead as I could for the run (wheelchair race). “I improved a lot over the past year, even on the run, but it wasn’t to be for that gold. “I am still happy with my silver.” Meanwhile, Queenslander David Bryant finished seventh in PTS5 triathlon in his first Paralympics. - AAP

Have a spring in your step outdoors Alright gardeners, your attention, please. Spring is here, so put away the novels, turn off the television and forget the lazy afternoons in front of the fi re. Although a lot of us have already enjoyed the outdoors, due to the statewide lockdown, it’s time to clean off the lawn mower, pick up spades and trowels and begin the spring garden clean. Your lawns will defi nitely require attention. Firstly, eradicate weeds, then when lawns are actively growing begin fertilising. Fertilising generally is very high on the September spring list – azaleas, magnolias and camellias can be pruned, if necessary and fed carefully. Ground-grown camellias and magnolias can be fed with cow manure, whereas containergrown plants should be given a slow-release fertiliser such as Bounceback.

Mulch the surface of camellias and azaleas with peat moss, which will protect their surface roots systems during the coming warm spring weather and the heat of summer. September is ideal for liberal feeding – potted plants, trees, shrubs and climbers all need a boost. If in doubt about which fertiliser to use, apply one with a neutral pH such as Bounceback. Feed Murraya, hibiscus, buxus and gardenias with cow manure – this qualifies for ground plants, otherwise use a slow-release product. When natives fi nish their winter/spring flowering, fertilise carefully with a little blood and bone. Note: wattles pruned regularly each year will have a longer life span. Although I have mentioned fertilising gardenias with cow manure, these beautifully-

perfumed plants can be a problem each year when setting blooms. Leaves that are yellowing can be under stress from lack of water. So, apply a liberal dose of cow manure and chelated iron if leaves continue to drop. I have seen gardenias presenting recently covered in sooty mould – this fungal disease indicates that the plant has scale. Enjoy your spring garden – this year the pansies are reacting to the cold winter and providing colour in pots and gardens – the yellow bringing sun into our lives. Azaleas are blooming, jasmine is perfuming the air and shrubs bursting into bloom herald the end of winter. It’s time to plant out summer vegetables, tomatoes, capsicum, chilli, basil and lettuce. Most of all, enjoy spring.

Hunter in top dozen regions for first home buyers seeking popular tree/sea change Out-of-reach capital city house prices and increased uptake of remote working are just two of the reasons first home buyers are snapping up property in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland, according to Hunter real estate agents. Since the start of the pandemic, 24,500 people have left Sydney, with Newcastle and Lake Macquarie

MOLLY Molly is the most unique family dog we’ve ever had. She’s 10 years old but still plays with her toys like she’s nine months old! The best thing though, she’s always happy to see you when you walk in the door! (And she lets me drag her along on long walks to nowhere!)

GRAN’S CHRISTMAS FRUITCAKE I refuse to eat any other fruitcake apart from my Gran’s. I’ve tried plenty, but they’ve got nothing on hers. She died a few years ago now but every year I make her fruit cake like she used to for us - it’s quite the process, soaking fruit and cooking the cake and then letting it sit but it’s worth every bite.

MORGAN Well if you’re lucky like me you’ll have a human that gets to be your partner in crime. Morgan and I have been together for 18 months now and I have never done so many adventurous things as I have in the time with him. From snowboarding, to camping through National Parks from the Hunter all the way to Grafton and weekend adventures here, there and everywhere.

News Director at NewFM and 2HD Jessica has spent the past three years in the beautiful Upper Hunter as a local news journalist and host of morning show Hunter Valley Today at 2NM and PowerFM. She says she loved the area, the people and the privilege of being able to share local stories on the radio. The ones Jessica will always remember are from when NSW and the Upper Hunter was in the midst of one of the worst droughts on record. “It was a truly heartbreaking time but I was able to share the stories of local farmers on air and it’s the best thing I’ve ever been able to do,” she said. “The trust they had in me to share their stories was like nothing else.” Jessica adds she loves being back in Newcastle, her parents live near Maitland so she grew up in and around the city. “The area is wonderful, great people and close to everything you need. I can’t wait to share all of the local news of the region on air at NewFM and 2HD and lead a wonderful team.”

CROSSFIT I’m obsessed… if I don’t turn up at the CrossFit gym at least four times a week, I don’t feel as energetic and happy going about my day-to-day routine. Now, as we continue the lockdown, I’ve been doing at-home workouts basically every afternoon to try and keep myself sane and unwind from the work day. So I feel physically healthy, but mentally too which is even more important.

COLOURING IN I know what you’re thinking… how old are you? You’re colouring in?! It’s called adult colouring in and it’s one of the most relaxing things to spend hours doing.
