Let me start by saying, I’m not a big fan of lockdowns.
But, have the “stay at home” orders actually worked? They’ve done nothing to stem the flow of positive COVID-19 cases in Greater Sydney, with numbers continuing to rise each and every day. At least three times this past week, before going to press, that figure surged past 800. It’s a shocking statistic. However, my main concern centres on the way they’ve been rolled out. It’s been haphazard by the NSW Government and NSW Health from the beginning. Instead of making the hard decision and preventing people leaving Greater Sydney altogether, Premier Gladys Berejiklian and her team allowed workers to venture to areas like the Hunter. And, while the region – well, 95% of residents – has banded together, there’s no reward for doing the “right thing” either. Newcastle and surrounding LGAs have registered low infections in the past fortnight, some with no cases at all.

Ray of hope amid Afghanistan crisis While the simple action of lighting a candle may not change the world, Father Greg Barker hopes it sends a message. The Iraq war veteran and Boolaroo-based priest found himself searching for something to do to acknowledge the crisis occurring in Afghanistan. As Australia and the US withdrew their troops from the troubled country, the Taliban recently took control of Kabul following the hasty exit of president Ashraf Ghani, with chaotic and horrendous scenes emanating across the globe. “It has made me feel a bit gutted,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “Some of the images that are being relayed back are horrific. “The women and children and young girls in Afghanistan, their lives are going to be so different now and that is dreadful to me. “I was also just feeling really sad for the veterans who worked in Afghanistan.
“There’s lots of posts on Facebook and other social media that I am in with fellas talking about how they feel a bit devastated by it. “They feel that all that work they did, and it was good work with the right intent, has somehow fallen over.” He adds that he wants them to know the sacrifices they made have not been wasted. “Those veterans just need to be reminded that people are supporting them and that they’re work wasn’t wasted and that they are not forgotten in the midst of all this,” Father Barker said. Having served with the Royal Australian Air Force for six years as a chaplain, he knows how difficult it could be for them. “I was deployed across to Iraq where I spent six months working around the Middle East with the defence presence there,” he said. “Going [to Iraq] initially was confronting but, I don’t know how other military people might talk

about it, it’s incredible how fast things normalise. “So even when bombs are going off and you can hear gunfire and see gunfire in the frontline it becomes somehow normal. “I know people remain defrayed and there’s lots and lots of confronting images that many people saw and a lot of people have been traumatised coming home since. “But, there is a real sense that you just get on with it while you are there. “My work was fairly intense, and Afghanistan is a whole different field of operation.” After reflecting on his own feelings about the situation, Father Barker thought it necessary to lead a response in his parish community. At 6pm last Thursday 19 August and at the same time on the following two evenings, he lit a candle at the steps of the Boolaroo church. Each night acknowledged a different part of the humanitarian crisis, including what lay ahead for Afghan women, a show of support for the veterans and a night for everyone in Afghanistan who finds themselves in dire circumstances. He wanted to stand in solidarity with those impacted by the crisis. - Elizabeth Symington
Ocean baths’ restoration City of Newcastle has called for construction tenders for the first stage of Newcastle Ocean Baths' revitalisation. 'Stage 1' of the upgrade project addresses key safety, accessibility and water-quality issues that have been identified through detailed community engagement and engineering advice. As part of the project, the iconic bleacher seating will be retained, the boardwalk will be renewed, and a new pump station installed that can replace the water of the baths within six hours, improving water quality. The undulating rock bottom of the pool will be capped with concrete to improve safety and water quality, and sand will continue to build up on the floor by the same processes as today. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the community engagement had been key to finalising the designs for Stage 1, with feedback shaping elements such as the location of ramp access, replacement of art-deco circular stairs, and boardwalk material. “The final design for Stage 1 captures what the community told us was important to them, and we've worked with our expert consultants to also ensure the design meets accessibility, safety and health requirements,” Cr Nelmes said. “This is a generational investment in the Newcastle Ocean Baths, which will celebrate its 100th birthday next year, which is why City of Newcastle have meticulously worked with both the community and experts to ensure what's delivered meets the needs of current and future users.”

Maitland family’s drive to instill Christmas spirit A Maitland family is hoping to bring the community together, again, as it kicks off its Calamity Annual Toy and Gift Drive. The sixth edition of the popular campaign will ensure smiles are placed upon the faces of children and parents alike on 25 December

From there, the idea of a yearly toy and gift drive was born. “It just grows, and grows, and grows,” Mr Sheldon said. “Since the inaugural appeal, in 2016, the donations have steadily increased with thousands of items offered. The toys and gifts are then provided to local charities and organisations, including Carrie’s Place, the Farmers Run and Got Your Back Sista. “But, our main focus has always been families affected by domestic violence and this will always be very important. “In 2021, we’re broadening the assistance to include those affected by mental health. “We’ve just started this year’s drive, which will end in the third week of November. “That then gives us enough
time to sort everything out.” Mr Sheldon was quick to praise Hunter residents and businesses for playing a role, too. “It’s amazing; a real community -based thing,” he said. “It’s heartening to see that with every year, the support from locals has risen, which enables us to help the ever-increasing number of families who require assistance. “We also have mums and dads, sons and daughters, who take it upon themselves to organise their own drives to complement ours.” Mr Sheldon said the “ultimate goal” was to establish a charitable foundation. Special day on the horizon for our doting dads

Like most dads in the Hunter, Mick Holliday is looking forward to spending time with his young family next Sunday 5 September. The coal miner, who has worked weekends for as long as he can remember, is “downing tools” this year, spending Father’s Day with his “blended tribe” and his newest addition. On 23 June Mick welcomed son Cooper into his life. The arrival of his first child with partner Sarah signals not only a fresh start for the pair, but also for their blended family. Cooper Michael Holliday was born at the John Hunter Hospital, just 17 months after the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in Australia. Now, at eight-weeks-old, the doted-on tot has travelled little
more than a radius of 5km from his home in Elermore Vale and has no knowledge of what it is to have external visitors in his home. But, at this stage, that means very little to him, in fact he may be disappointed when his four older siblings eventually return to their regular school timetables. For his first Father’s Day, Cooper will be joined by his older stepbrothers and sisters marking the annual occasion at home, something dad Mick says he’s looking forward to. “It’ll be great to celebrate the day with all the kids at home,” he said. “We can’t do much about being in lockdown but we’re lucky we’ll all be together and we’re lucky we’ve got a home that fits us all in nicely.”
Aside from Cooper, Mick is also “dad” to his 13 and 10-year-old daughters, and known as “Mickelback” to Sarah’s 16 and seven-year-old sons. “It’s been a while since I’ve had a newborn in my arms that’s for sure,” he said. “It’s like learning it all over again.” Celebrating at home on what is expected to be a beautiful spring Sunday, Hunter dads can look forward to more than the traditional socks and jocks gifts, according to our younger readers. With the re-emergence of restrictions and uncertainty in the community, Maitland City Council urges any individuals or families who are requiring any level of help to seek out one of the many nearby services that form part of the Food Assistance Network (FAN). Established in April 2020 as part of council’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery initiatives, the FAN is made up of more than 13 local organisations who are providing free and low-cost meals, hampers, parcels and reduced cost groceries to people who need support. “We believe this project is of the utmost importance to our community, especially due to the COVID conditions we currently find ourselves in,” manager community and recreation Laurie D’Angelo-Edmonds said. “The objective of the Food

Sarah’s aiming high to conquer MS challenge It hasn’t been an easy road for Gateshead’s Sarah Williams. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) 13 years ago, the 52-year-old has watched her body battle the progressive neurological disease in a fight she cannot win. But that has not stopped her
aiming high. In November she hopes to climb to the peak of Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain. The single mother knows the 4-day 35km trek won’t be easy, but it is in keeping with her motto: “I have MS... but that’s not going to stop me”.

Sarah’s journey began with stroke-like symptoms in 2008. “I was working my normal shift [at Sporties in Belmont] when I just got confused, my speech started slurring and my eyesight went so they sent me off to the docs straight away,” she said. Doctors initially thought Sarah had suffered a stroke and suggested a CT scan to rule out anything more sinister. “That same day they came back to me and told me I had MS,” she told the Newcastle Weekly. “They’d found more than 20 lesions on my brain. I was totally shocked.” Although her symptoms appear minimal, Sarah says she suffers “behind the scenes”. “Some of the symptoms that I’m afflicted with are optic neuritis
(eyesight), drop foot (walking), speech impediment, dyspepsia, numbness and pins and needles,” she said. “The last relapse I lost my ability to write and draw and I lost my ability to speak so I had to learn how to speak again.” Rather than letting it beat her Sarah has vowed to keep active as long as she can. In November she will tackle the Conquer Cradle Mountain to Beat MS Challenge. To participate however, she will need to raise $3,000 for MS as well as pay for her airfare and accommodation. Conservation society proposes Wildlife Overpass The Munibung Hill Conservation Society (MHCS) is seeking community support in its quest to deliver a Wildlife Overpass at Hillsborough Road. Transport for NSW recently released plans for the longawaited upgrade of the busy thoroughfare, from the Newcastle Inner City Bypass to west of Crockett Street, Cardiff South. And, while the MHCS fully backs the department’s enhancements to improve traffic flow in the area, members are concerned the proposal boasts one glaring omission – protecting local native animals. “We have no issue with the project,” president Stuart Carter said. “In fact, it’ll allow muchimproved access for Hillsborough and Cardiff South residents as well as making it safer for the thousands of motorists who use the road every day. “However, we’d like Transport
for NSW to revisit and give careful – and urgent – consideration to implementing a major change. “Wildlife, especially the invertebrates, mammals and reptiles, have become land-locked and unable to freely move or migrate between vital habitat areas. “At the moment, the project only offers the opportunity to reconnect two portions of bushland that are cut off from each other, separated by residential areas and Hillsborough Road; a very important link road. “Just as connectivity is considered essential for human society, it is critical for native species, that if left isolated, can die out due to concentrated predation by introduced species like foxes and cats (be they feral or unrestrained domestic pets) and/or due to the reduced genetic pool.” Mr Carter said one resolution to the dilemma, according to the

MHCS, was a Wildlife Overpass. “With the benefits of hindsight, we know that if left unaddressed, these human-induced issues resulting from previously wellintentioned but now deemed inappropriate planning processes will only worsen, compounding the situation further,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “But, there are many good examples of these infrastructure projects (overpasses) in Australia and overseas. “Such modern eco-engineering developments demonstrate creative solutions and send a clear message to the community that we are committed to giving wildlife the best possible chance to survive and thrive within an urban setting. “We think there are at least five good reasons why the current plans need to be revised; why a Wildlife Overpass or bridge across Hillsborough Road, near the Crockett Street intersection, would be welcomed by all sections of the community.” The MHCS’s motives include:
1. Providing connectivity in the form of a native animal corridor between a significant conservation area in Cardiff South and the bushland around Charlestown Golf Club; 2. Providing for safer pedestrian and walking track connectivity, and a possible extension of the Great North Walk; 3. Permitting an Aboriginal art installation on the inner lining of the Wildlife Overpass; 4. Reducing road-kill and injuries to wildlife requiring carer hospital intensive care; and 5. Reducing wildlife crossing attempts leading to road-kill trauma for motorists, damage to vehicles requiring expensive repairs and insurance claims. “The best way to let Transport for NSW know that Wildlife Overpasses are important is to send an email to hillsboroughroad@transport. nsw.gov.au,” Mr Carter said. “Now is the time to do that before it’s too late.” - Rod Thompson

removal of the glasshouse building subject to heritage assessment. “Gregson Park continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Novocastrians,” Ms Cotton said. “I’m really pleased the heritage of the park will be retained into the future. I have no doubt that as the plans come to fruition, Gregson Park will remain a historic gem that continues to pay homage to its past.” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said community feedback in 2020 had shaped the much-loved park moving forward. “We heard people want to see the incorporation of Aboriginal culture, more planting of native species, an upgrade of amenities, improvements to the playspace, creation of spaces for the community to come together,
provision for active recreation, and the retention of the existing heritage elements and much-loved fig trees,” she said. Gregson Park also boasts great potential as an event space, due to the connection through the local area and proximity to the business district in Beaumont Street. The masterplan for the site is intended to be instigated across a 10-year period with short-term and long-term priorities. Goals set for implementation within five years include the playspace, realigned paths, plantings and community shelter. Work on the playspace featuring nature play, water play and small yarning circle will start in 2022 under the City of Newcastle’s annual asset renewal program. -Rod Thompson

Lockdown leaving buyers ‘frustrated’ says agent Real estate agents across the Hunter are racing to reassure both buyers and sellers that they’re still ‘open for business’, despite the region being in lockdown. Within hours of the 5 August announcement, agents scrambled to make contact with clients in a bid

Lake Cinema ready to return when lockdown lifts Since opening in 1974 Lake Cinema in Boolaroo has been through a lot. It’s seen the term of 11 Prime Ministers, many natural disasters and watched the world transition from film to videos, DVDs and streaming services. Now, it is making its way through a very challenging pandemic. While it has been forced to close its doors temporarily, owner Bob Mason says it will be

back as soon as possible. “The cinema was closed for months during the first lockdown and now we are closed again until the Delta strain is controlled,” he said. “Unfortunately, when you are closed the income is zero. “Part of the success of the cinema is the amazing people who work with me to provide the services offered. “During the first lockdown our staff received JobKeeper and I guess the government will offer assistance if this present lockdown continues.” Mason adds the cinema started life “very crudely” with screenings of Singin in the Rain and Showboat. “The opening was performed by Geoff Pasterfield who was Mayor of the City,” he said. “The biggest milestone [for us] has to be surviving that long and overcoming the arrival of video. “The cinema began life very crudely, but as money became available improvements were made to the seating, projection equipment,
replacing carpet, replacing the candy bar and installation of air-conditioning. “Over the years we have constantly upgraded the cinema with painting to make it a more enjoyable experience to attend.” Fast forward 47 years, he says the business would not be where it is today without the support of its staff, the community and Lake Macquarie City Council. “As soon as the authorities permit cinemas to reopen, we will be back,” he said. “I suggest patrons watch for details of our program on the website, Facebook page and the 24-hour information line as well as the displays on the front doors of the cinema. “We are grateful for the support from our terrific patrons and look forward to welcoming them back and, once again, my sincere appreciation to the amazing team who support me operating Lake Cinema.” Go to lakecinema.net.au for more information or to stay up to date with its reopening. - Elizabeth Symington

New Annual is set to return in September 2022 following the postponement of the latest edition of the Newcastle festival. The decision was made given ongoing COVID-19 cases in Greater Sydney, the Hunter and New England, as well as the associated public health, artist availability and restriction concerns. City of Newcastle strategy and engagement acting director Kathleen Hyland said while the call to not go ahead with New Annual, which was scheduled to take place from 24 September to 3 October, was disappointing, it was clear that now was not the time to be planning such an extravaganza. “The decision has been made with our community’s safety in mind,” she explained. “Following on from the success
of our inaugural event in February, our team was in the midst of planning a New Annual that would take it to the next level with an outstanding program of events and performances, including new acts and new locations that would bring our city to life. “But, with headline artists coming from across Australia, and New Annual’s audience being drawn from far and wide, the current COVID environment means it is no longer appropriate, or possible, to deliver the kind of event we envisaged. “I thank all the City of Newcastle staff, the creative community and stakeholders for the passion and commitment they have shown to New Annual, and everything they have done to prepare for the festival to this point.”

Taste the rainbow
We could all use a little festive fun right now, so this week we are bringing you some colourful combos that will taste as good as they look.
Sparkling rainbow Rainbow lemonade jelly layers
Fill a SodaStream 1 litre bottle to the fill line with cold water and carbonate.
1L SodaStream sparkling water
To make the rainbow lemonade jelly layers, mix the sparkling water with lemonade syrup. Set aside.
Soda Press Co organic lemonade syrup Mix of coloured jelly packets (I used purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red jelly) Vanilla panna cotta 750ml cream, pure
2 large handfuls of spiralised vegetables, such as carrot, beetroot and zucchini Small handful of parsley leaves 1/2 avocado, sliced
For the vanilla panna cotta, combine the cream, sugar and vanilla in a saucepan over medium-low heat and gently warm. Squeeze excess water from the gelatine and stir into the cream mixture until dissolved, then stir in the milk. Strain mixture into a large bowl or jug and set aside for 15 minutes or until lightly set.

20g titanium-strength gelatine leaves, soaked in cold water to soften 250ml milk

1 sun-dried tomato wrap
Prepare all of the jelly flavours in separate bowls to packet instructions, adding the lemonade mixture in place of the cold water. Set aside.
Pour a thin layer of purple jelly into the base of a serving dish. Place in the fridge to lightly set, then top with a thin layer of panna cotta, making sure the layers are even. Return to the fridge to lightly set. Continue layering evenly with all the colours of jelly (in whatever order you like!) and remaining panna cotta mixture, making sure you allow each layer to set slightly before adding the next. Once layered, transfer the serving bowl to the fridge to set completely before serving.

Crunchy rainbow wraps
1 tsp toasted sesame seeds 2 Tbsp tahini 1 Tbsp Greek yoghurt 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1/2 tsp minced garlic Top the wrap with all the ingredients. Roll up and secure the wrap.
