From the editor Gee, there must be an election looming in the region. Never before has such a procession of politicians found their way to the area – and, in particular, the Upper Hunter. Following the sudden resignation of The Nationals’ Michael Johnsen, who was accused of several indiscretions, which he categorically denied, the state seat is one of the hottest on the political landscape. You know that to be true when NSW Premier Gladys Berijiklian ventures to the Scone Cup to throw her support behind a local candidate. Don’t forget, this is the same woman who, as the representative for the Hunter many years ago, never actually travelled past Newcastle. But, the Upper Hunter by-election is significant for a number of reasons. And, it’s certainly up for grabs. If newcomer David Layzell prevails this weekend, that’ll be a huge relief for the NSW Government. A loss to Labor’s Jeff Drayton or one of the other 11 contenders, representing several Independents, One Nation, The Greens and Shooters Fishers and Farmers, will ensure countless headaches. On the other side of the coin, a win to The Nationals will put the blowtorch on Jodi McKay’s Opposition leadership credentials. Make every vote count. Until next week, keep smiling. - Rod Thompson

news Strong push for 30km/h speed limits in Newcastle’s CBD A push to introduce 30km/h speed limits in Newcastle is back on the agenda to coincide with United Nations Global Road Safety Week. With the backing of the Newcastle Cycleways Movement and the CycleSafe Network, the campaign also hopes to improve liveability on the streets where “we walk, shop and play”. “Our call to action is simple,” CycleSafe Network spokesperson Deborah Moore said. “We need more 30km/h streets especially around schools, residents and on main business thoroughfares. “Think Darby and Beaumont streets, for example. “In 2020, we welcomed Transport for NSW’s trial of 30km/h limits around Honeysuckle and Newcastle foreshore. The Honeysuckle 30km/h

zone was an excellent step in the right direction. “It appears to be designed for high speeds – it’s wide, straight and subsequently fast. “To reduce the speeds, at which people actually drive, it’s not as simple as reducing speed limits. “We also have to redesign streets for lower speeds.” Newcastle Cycleways Movement spokesperson Matthew Mclaughlin also weighed in on the debate. “There are a lot of myths about 30km/h zones,” the University of Newcastle health researcher said. “They’re sometimes seen as antimotorist. “But, in fact, low speed streets help cut congestion and don’t significantly increase journey times.” Mr Mclaughlin added the need

to redesign Newcastle’s streets was urgent. “Low speeds save lives and people consistently say they want lower speeds where they live,” he said. The organisation pointed out the following: People spend more money in local businesses when they are safer to get to; transport experience improves by making short trips more attractive to walk/cycle/roll, reducing overall congestion on our roads. Reducing the speed by 1020km/h on local roads has very little

impact on car journey times; making walking and cycling safer, and more accessible, enables and encourages healthy lifestyles and improves public health. Liveable streets are more crucial than ever as we respond to COVID-19; promoting walking and cycling and shifting away from car dependence to cleaner air and lower CO2 emissions will address some of the urgency for our environment; and it is extremely urgent for people with disabilities, for the elderly in fact, for all who are vulnerable. - Rod Thompson

Some paws-itively adorable cats and dogs will gather at Speers Point Park on Sunday for a cause close to their hearts. Alongside their owners or foster carers, they will support Hunter Animal Rescue and its mission to find canines and felines in-need a safe and loving forever home.

Executive committee member Caroline Hawkless says the group is really looking forward to the Pets Picnic event. “It’s long overdue,” she said. “We’ve all suffered through COVID-19 last year so we’re really looking forward to getting back out to the public and sharing and

celebrating what we do. Hopefully, we will get a lot of people who have adopted from us over the past 12 months come along and say hello.” Kicking off at 10am on Sunday 23 May, the volunteers hope it will generate some donations and awareness after a difficult year. “We want to make sure the animals who go through the pound system and are at risk of staying there for a long time or, god forbid, facing the risk of euthanasia are helped,” Caroline said. She adds if you are looking for a cat or dog, the event is perfect for you – they will have some of the animals available for adoption at the park, including the adorable Cotton, Ben and Maggie (pictured). “Ben and Cotton were seized by the RSPCA from a breeding facility that breached animal welfare legislation,” Caroline said.

“Having been the subject of a completed court case they were released to Hunter Animal Rescue for rehabilitation and rehoming. “Since they arrived in care in early May they have had a health check and were recently desexed. “We would love to rehome them together.” If you’re looking for a furry friend, Hunter Animal Rescue encourages everyone to do adopt. “Don’t look back but think carefully about what your lifestyle is, and what style of animal will really suit you,” Caroline said. news Soul Cafe calls on community to Sleepout for vital cause Grab a swag, some warm clothes and dig deep into your pockets to support Soul Cafe during an event this week. The community organisation is hosting its annual Sleepout for Soul on Friday 21 May in a bid to raise funds for its vital services. Since 2003, the charity has been supporting residents by serving hot meals free of charge to the highlydisadvantaged in the region. “In the past 12 months we served 50,884 meals,” general manager Matthew Ortiger said. “But, we are more than a meal, delivering a wide range of help and support to everyone who needs it including medical, mental health and dental services and Centrelink, laundry, barber and pantry services. “We estimate over the year we

might see [about] 2,500 different faces and most of them come regularly.” The 2021 Sleepout for Soul will see the return of an in-person event after the 2020 edition was forced to go virtual amid the COVID-19 pandemic. To be hosted at the Bolton Street car park, Matthew says the venue will provide sweeping views of the city and give participants a small glimpse of what it would be like to live without shelter. He adds people can still take part virtually if they need. “At the moment we have [a large number of] people registered, we’re excited that we might have 300 plus people registered by the time the event rolls around,” he said. “Our highest ever attendance

previously was 278 people, so I think we are on target to break a record. “Our goal this year is to raise $175,000. That will pay for about six months of Soul’s daily function.” Matthew invites everyone to get behind the cause. “People should support Soul Cafe because it is a community response to a deep community need caring for the vulnerable homeless, evicted and mentally unwell people,” he said. “We get no government funding, we’re a community organisation

solely funded by the people and businesses of Newcastle.” Matthew adds if you can’t attend the event there are other ways to help the organisation. “The best way you can support Sleepout if you can’t participate is to donate to the appeal to help us raise that money,” he said. “Another great way to support us is to get involved with volunteering.” Go to the soulcafe.org.au for more information. - Elizabeth Symington

A brother-sister pairing is hoping to make the Hunter region proud at this year’s Olympic Games. In July, Lake Macquarie locals Jaime and Will Ryan will embark for Tokyo as part of the Australian sailing team. Influenced by their grandfather, the duo began sailing in their youth. Will started at age 11 at the Toronto Amateur Sailing Club, going on to compete at the 2006 Youth World Sailing Championships. Jaime’s interest in sailing began at 15, commenting that after following Will from yacht club to yacht club she thought she “might as well get into it myself”. The gifted sailor added she and her brother were “spoilt” growing up sailing on the lake, which offers the “best conditions” for training

for the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The pair both represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Games, competing in the women’s and men’s 470 class respectively. Jaime managed a 15th place finish, narrowly missing out on reaching the Top 10 while Will brought home silver for the Australian team. “The Rio 2016 Olympics was a pretty special experience, and I came into a squad that already had a vast amount of experience and had come up with winning the gold medal at the London Olympics,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “I was a new component to that team. “That whole four-year journey to that [Rio Olympics] was really a pretty intense rollercoaster the whole way along.

“For myself, we probably weren’t totally happy with our performance. “We were just such fierce competitors that we set ourselves this ultimate bar that’s up so high. “That’s part of the drive to continue on towards Tokyo, to make amends for those tiny little things that we know better. “And, that’s what makes it exciting.” Jaime added Rio 2016 was an “amazing experience” and the energy of Brazil was a highlight. “Probably our performances in the sailing were a bit disappointing, but from that you get a lot of lessons and a lot of drive that’s taken me forward towards the next Games,” she said. In Tokyo, she’ll compete in the 49erFX class and Will in the 470. - Calum Thomson

Newcastle’s first five-star hotel will soon open its doors

Newcastle’s first five-star hotel is almost ready to open to the public. The redevelopment, 14 months in the making, is the much-anticipated transformation of the city’s iconic ‘Roundhouse’ building, which started life in the 1970s as the City Administration Centre. Located opposite Civic Park, Crystalbrook

Kingsley is expected to become a drawcard for locals and visitors alike, bringing a new elegance to the former steel city. Its grandeur begins the moment you enter its doors. Undyed wool carpets in striking yellows hues featuring a swirling Indigenous design, lead its visitors to strategically placed mirrors that give the impression the building is endless. cover story Dr Rob’s critical care takes flight with rescue helicopter The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) is one of the most revered organisations in the Hunter – and rightly so. In fact, no-one has ever paid to utilise the WRHS since its existence, almost 50 years ago. But, like many community-based groups, it took a major financial hit when COVID-19 impacted its fundraising capabilities in 2020. Now, highly-respected NSW Health doctor Rob Bartolacci is heading up the WRHS’s annual End of Financial Year (EOFY) Appeal in the hope that residents can dig deep into their pockets to keep the service flying across Northern NSW. “It takes on extra importance this time around,” the on-board Critical Care Medical Team member said. “Due to all the difficulties the

past couple of years, with the floods, bushfires and pandemic, everyone’s strapped for money. “Charities, for example, are really hurting. So, it’s more significant for us than in previous years to obtain a good result – and assist the WRHS moving forward. “I’m happy to do anything for the service. I am humbled to be asked to be the face of the EOFY campaign, however, at the same time, I’m the oldest one here,” he added with a laugh. Dr Rob, as he’s affectionately known within the WRHS ranks, admits his involvement began a long, long time ago – in a peripheral way. “Our medical services underwent a big review about 2010-12,” he said. “Prior to 2014, the WRHS crew consisted of two paramedics, a pilot

and an air crewman for pre-hospital work. All the in-hospital labour was done with a doctor and an ICU nurse. “In 2014, the system changed statewide. Doctors then came on board the aircraft for all jobs. “And, that’s when I ‘officially’ started with the WRHS. But, I’d worked peripherally with them doing in-hospital transfers ever since the 1990s.” In the first four months of 2021,

Honestly, I think we’re on par, at least, with the best services in the world, which is a credit to the region.” The Critical Care Medical Team can give an anaesthetic, provide pain relief or a lifesaving blood transfusion, support someone’s breathing or their heart… they can even re-start a heart. Even though all this happens in major hospitals every day, the WRHS “heroes” perform it in the air.

While it was hard for Dr Rob to single out specific noteworthy incidents during his lengthy stint with the service, he said there were many that tugged at the heartstrings. “The jobs that tend to stick in your mind are ones that usually have someone involved, which reminds you of someone in your family,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “And, it’s mostly children. “If you go to a job involving a child, that’s similar in age to your own child, or a grandkid or if you know someone, it really hits home. “That scenario isn’t uncommon either, because the WRHS’s a community asset. The class will be run by Denise Sweeney, an accredited Qigong and Tai Chi instructor with two years of teaching experience. She is a 12-year cancer survivor, who has been doing Qigong and Tai Chi since finishing treatment. It has helped in her recovery as well as maintaining her good health. Tea-riffic event to raise vital funds for charity A simple cup of tea will mean a whole lot more during an event later this month. Residents across the region are being encouraged to take part in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Culminating in thousands of functions across the country on 27 May, the money raised will be used to help bring everyone closer to a cancer-free future. While next Thursday is the official date, those who can’t make it are welcome to host an event until the end of June. “Cancer affects people in so many ways and impacts every community in Australia,” Cancer Council’s Newcastle and the Hunter community relations coordinator Gemma Pedri said.

“With over 138,000 Australians estimated to be diagnosed with cancer this year, it’s important that [they] can access support services. “Our services help Australians affected by cancer, providing vital support when they need it most and making their cancer journey easier.” With one in every two Australians diagnosed with the disease before they are 85, most of us have been affected by it in one way or another. That’s the driving force behind two local businesses’ dedication to the cause. Beresfield Bowling Club has been hosting events since 1999, while Centennial Mandalong have been on board for the past 10 years. “A lot of members of our club and staff know someone who has been affected by cancer, whether that is

Get your affairs in order During Law Week (17 to 23 May), MRM Lawyers is urging Hunter residents to make sure their “legal affairs” are in order. A person who passes away without a will at law dies intestate. The Succession Act (NSW) 2006 describes how someone’s estate is distributed if they die without a will. The Act sets out the estate will be divided as follows: • If a person dies leaving a spouse or a de facto spouse with no children and the whole of the estate passes to the surviving spouse or de facto; • If there is a spouse or a de facto spouse and children then assets to the value of $200,000 or the principal place of residence, whichever is the greater, passes to the spouse or the de facto, together with the household effects and then the balance is divided so that the spouse receives a one half share of the balance and the remainder is divided equally between the children; • If no spouse or de facto spouse survives then the estate is divided

equally between the children; • Where there is no spouse and no children, then the estate passes to the parents in equal shares. The Act then provides the order of classes are: brothers and sisters or their children, half brothers and sisters or their children, grandparents, uncles and aunts and then uncles and aunts resulting from the marriage of the deceased grandparents. If there are no relatives then the estate passes to the state of New South Wales. Anyone over the age of 18 should give consideration to making a will. Where there is no will then the closest relative can apply for Letters of Administration and then the estate will be divided according to the Wills Probate Administration Act. Immunity Hot Chocolate

This week the Newcastle Weekly brings you an immunity boosting recipe that is perfect for the colder weather. Recipe by Susie Burell, courtesy of Mayver’s Prep/cook: 15 minutes Serves 1 Ingredients 1.5 tbsp Mayver’s Omega-3 Super Peanut Butter

2 tbsp boiling water

1.5 tbsp cocoa powder

15g 70% cocoa dark chocolate, grated (optional)

1 tsp honey

1 cup skim milk

Method 1. Combine the cocoa powder, honey and boiling water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk to combine. 2. Add in peanut butter and whisk rapidly to form a thick consistency. 3. Gradually pour in milk and continue to whisk over medium heat for a further two minutes. 4. Pour hot chocolate mixture into a mug and top with grated dark chocolate (if desired). Serve immediately.

During the past few days, have your thoughts turned to winter? Once I put my scarf and woollen cardigan on at work, I know it is snowing somewhere. Winter conjures up thoughts of warm fires, yet some of the most beautiful, brilliant whites are planted now coming into winter. Let’s reflect to just a few years ago when the allwhite garden was the rage. Iceberg roses dominated the landscape – and often still do. But, let me jog your memory to the wonder of white by planting annuals and perennials. There isn’t anything more economical than fi lling empty garden beds with punnets of flowers. A statuesque garden can be achieved by planting white stocks or fox gloves, which will create a tall backdrop. Primula Gillhams White, although an annual, can be quite repetitive each season but they look spectacular with a row of deep green parsley planted as a border. Another perennial option is the Primula Obconica, which has a larger leafed form and can be grown

indoors as well as in the garden. Cyclamen are ideal, however the bedding variety are smaller growing than those we use for indoor plants during winter. These cold-loving perennials may pop up year after year in a shady garden. If you have a warm spot, not often easy during winter, plant Gazania Kiss Vanilla, bordered with white alyssum.

THIS WEEK • Before planting peas’ lime the soil. • Complete spring bulb planting before the end of May – fertilise when planting, then on emergence. • Fertilise indoor plants with a slow release fertiliser before winter, then let them have a sleep until August. • If pansies appear to dampen off (leaves change colour) apply Mancozeb.

SCUBA DIVING My favourite place to dive was Coffs Harbour and Truk (near Japan in the Pacific). Atoll where a lot of WWII boats sunk to dive on. My most useful underwater device was an umbrella (Underwater Multibenefit Rescue Elevating Luggage Lancing Apparatus). You use it for when you need to ascend at a steady rate. Mine lasted about 3 dives before the handles would fall off.

My favourite things HYPNOSIS I used hypnosis with great success, in medical practice for migraines, deep relaxation exercises and anxiety, control of panic attacks.

Dr Frank Summers is a retired Newcastle local who founded one of the oldest community newspapers in Australia, Yeoval Satellite. More recently he created the Savvy Over Ninety’s Association (SONA). He founded the group based on a belief that people of sound mind and over the age of 90 years could greatly benefit from conversation and meet-ups and regular phone calls to reduce the effect of isolation. He has three children, Gillian, Michael and Robyn and four grandkids. In 1955 he became a qualified GP at Cambridge University before moving to Australia in 1959 – he retired in Newcastle at the age of 84.

FLYING I gained my private pilots licence at Broadmeadow Aerodrome which closed in 1963 and is now the home of the Newcastle Knights. One of the most fantastic times I enjoyed were Flying Safari trips (3) around Australia and 3 around America – made up of pilots and passengers and 20-30 aircrafts on each Safari.

SIRI I love Siri - she makes doing things easier, especially day to day things I need, as my eyesight is failing. Love a good bit of technology.

VISITORS I crave the company and conversation of visitors during the week so I have a calendar on hand to keep track of my social life. I’ve met a lot of people through SONA.
