From the editor Where would we be without community-minded organisations and volunteers? In a spot of bother, it seems. But, in the Hunter, we’re extremely lucky to boast so many groups and individuals who often go “above and beyond” to help others. Take the annual Lake Mac Awards at the weekend. An impressive array of candidates was unveiled at the Belmont 16s, any of which could be deemed worthy of a win. However, I don’t think too many people begrudged Jonathon Power from being named Lake Macquarie Ambassador of the Year. He established Empowered Community Services in 2017, taking inspiration from his parents, both of whom have lifelong disability. In fact, it was his mum Amanda, who encouraged him to pursue a career in disability services. So, congratulations to the winners, as well as all the nominees. PS: I mentioned, last week, it was a pleasure joining such a dynamic team at the Newcastle Weekly. But, in my haste to write my first column, I overlooked two other "key" members - experienced photographer Peter and promising journo Calum. It was remiss of me to leave them out, however I’m sure they’ll forgive me. Until next week, keep smiling.

Enough is Enough: City joins March4Justice movement “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.” That was the overarching sentiment expressed by more than 2,000 community members as they

rallied at Newcastle’s March4Justice on Monday 15 March. Closing many of the city’s businesses, supporters proudly joined a nationwide campaign calling

for equality, justice, respect, and an end to gendered violence. ‘No Means No’, ‘Women’s Rights are Human Rights’ and ‘Newcastle Says Enough’ were among the banners held high at Civic Park. Women of all ages were flanked by male supporters, all expressing their frustrations and sadness at a society that appeared to be failing to protect many of its members. Survivors took to the stage sharing their stories of sexual abuse and rape as well as first-hand accounts of domestic violence. Current statistics show that one Australian woman is killed at the hands of her current or former partner every week. Monday’s lunchtime rally was also aimed at voicing anger at the federal government over its handling of the alleged rape of former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins, the historic rape allegation against AttorneyGeneral Christian Porter and Sydney schoolgirl Chanel Contos' gathering

news Vaccination hub opens at John Hunter Hospital It was “all hands on deck” with the first major COVID-19 vaccination hub in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) opening at John Hunter Hospital. The centre is one of five major hubs across the state, which will also begin the dispatch of vaccine to 15 satellite sites in rural regions throughout the district in the coming weeks. Hunter New England Local Health District chief executive Michael DiRienzo said the response to the hub had been overwhelmingly positive on Monday 15 March. “Frontline healthcare workers received their first doses of the Pfizer vaccine today, thanks to the outstanding efforts of our staff who worked quickly to make this hub a possibility,” he explained.

“Our priority has always been to ensure our staff have access to vaccination facilities as close to their homes as possible. “We’re extremely excited to see this process start [today]. “We are humbled to be playing such a significant role in Australia’s vaccine rollout, and incredibly grateful that we can now offer our hard-working frontline staff protection against the virus.” John Hunter Hospital COVID-19 Ward nurse unit manager Alexandra Mexon was excited to be the first person to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. “While working in the COVID-19 ward I have witnessed the effects of the virus first-hand,” she said. “This is why I have chosen to have the vaccine today.

news Step to it: Super siblings hit pavement to beat dementia For Stuart Munro and Alison Spamer a jog by Lake Macquarie this Sunday will hit closer to home than it will for most. The siblings, alongside their family, are taking part in their fifth Dementia Australia Memory Walk and Jog event. It’s all for their dad Col, who has been battling the disorder for the past decade. “We’re doing it because our dad has dementia,” Stuart said. “It is just such a great event to get involved in to one; raise awareness but also raise some much-needed funds for research. “Watching [dad] with dementia over the years is just souldestroying, seeing him become a shell of his former self. “He’s a legend – growing up

he’s always been that father figure, he taught me how to fish and play sport. “He was a fitter and machinist teacher at TAFE and he ended up being a head teacher at Belmont and from what I gather he was very good at it. “People have told me that he changed their lives, he is such a knowledgeable man and he’s passed so much onto them that they’ll never be able to thank him enough which is kind of cool.” Alison agrees that it’s really hard to watch Col suffer with the condition. “My kids used to say grandad knows more than google when they were little,” she said. “When we were growing up if he didn’t know the answer, he

would be going to the encyclopedia looking up the answer because there was no internet and, as Stuart said, he was just so knowledgeable and clever. “He just had an incredible mind.” Forming a team called Col’s Crew, Stuart and Alison will be joined by 16 other family members and friends to raise funds and walk towards defeating dementia. With a goal of $3,000 the team is well on its way to achieving it,

having already reached a total of more than $1,800. The event calls on individuals or teams to take on the challenge of a 2 kilometre or 7.5 kilometre walk, jog or run. cover story Teenagers find a world of Harmony at San Clemente Diversity, inclusivity, respect and a sense of belonging. These four things are the pillars for Harmony Week (15 to 21 March) – a national event that celebrates Australia’s multiculturalism. For San Clemente High School at Mayfield, it is a very important week on the calendar. As one of the most culturally diverse schools in the Hunter, staff and students do all they can to honour its population. Tanatswa Mureverwi, a Year 8 student who moved to Australia from Zimbabwe when she was just 12 months old, says Harmony Week is important because it brings people together. “Harmony, for me, is about coming together as one and being able to share our thoughts and

feelings from our culture and there is no discrimination - everyone is included,” she said. “My family came to Australia because there were a lot of bad things happening in Zimbabwe, so we came here for a better education and more opportunities and I love it. “Australia has a unique personality and is a very diverse country.” Fellow student Rahaf Allawi, who moved here in 2012 to escape the Syrian war, agreed. “Australia is great at getting together and including other countries,” she said. She adds it is nice to learn about “places all around the world in the one country”. Year 10 student Rhett Snedden said going to San Clemente meant he

learnt about other cultures. “It’s a very inclusive school and I’ve realised that people aren't forced to hide their heritage here, it is very celebrated, and it is very talked about,” Rhett explained. For fellow student Ranier Tanudra, Australia has proven to be a haven of opportunities since his family moved from the Philippines. They arrived in Australia in 2012 in a bid to access a better education. “It’s had a big impact on my life moving here,” he said.

news ‘Active’ centenarian Ron on the ball Even though he may not look it, Ronald Keith Jackson has notched up more than 100 years. The centenarian celebrated the milestone last week and was joined by friends and family on Thursday 11 March for a special match of lawn bowls at Hamilton North Bowling Club. He’s got stories to tell, that most of us couldn’t even fathom. Ron served in the Middle East and Papua New Guinea during World War II, he’s experienced the rise of technology including colour TV, grew his beautiful family and, now, he is watching the country navigate its way through a pandemic. He said, despite its challenges, serving in the war was a duty he willingly undertook. “You never thought of it that way, it was something you had to do,” Ron said. “It was for the love of country I suppose – and adventure.” He added his life “didn’t start until [he] got married”. “That’s when it all came good,” Ron said. “There’d be plenty of [highlights], my wife was a bit of a party animal and I went with her everywhere.”

The pair was married on 11 October 1947, the day after Jean turned 20 and they have been smitten ever since. Three children, six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren later, the loved-up couple lead an incredible family that’s full of happy memories. The avid sportsman is known for taking part in whatever he can – he’s played baseball, cricket, tennis, golf and lawn bowls. “I’ve played nearly all sports, other than water sports,” he said. “I enjoyed them all, and I don’t think anyone could have enjoyed it more than me.” Ron picked up lawn bowls after he started having trouble with his golf swing. “I’d been playing golf for 30 years and I got arthritis in my shoulder, I couldn’t follow through with my back swing, so I thought: ‘oh well, I’ll be fine’,” he said. “My youngest daughter at the time was working at a bowling club and said I should try bowls. “So, I started bowling when I was 69.”

As for his secret to a long life, it is pretty straight forward. “Stay active, it’s essential,” he said. “The best piece of advice that I would give everyone is to be yourself, it is easier to be yourself rather than an imposter.” - Elizabeth Symington

Cardiff seniors roll out welcome mat A haven, which encourages older residents to have fun and form friendships, is continuing to roll out the welcome mat in Lake Macquarie. For the past four decades, the Cardiff Combined Pensioners and Senior Citizens group has entertained locals and visitors alike with a range of activities and events. And now, back in business following the coronavirus pandemic, club president Roger Stewart remains hopeful of seeing a reoccurrence of the “good old days”. “At the moment, we’ve got about 40 or so members,” he said. “A lot haven’t returned since COVID-19 for various reasons. “But, we’re hosting weekly bingo, carpet bowls and euchre again. “We are also planning regular things like lunches, movies at Glendale and games days once a month, too. “So, there’s always something to do at the Harrison Street venue. “Even better, everyone will be greeted with a smile.”

Bingo takes place every Monday (9.30am1.15pm), while carpet bowls (9.30am-noon) and euchre (12.30pm-3pm) is available each Friday. “It’s a great facility,” said Mr Stewart, himself a member for the past 14 years. “For ‘mature adults’, it gives them a place where they feel welcome, as well as a sense of belonging. “They can catch up with friends, grab a bite to eat, have a chat and a laugh or two. “For instance, the bingo crowd is extremely loyal. “They turn up every Monday without fail. “They’re a good mob of people. “Plus, we’re sticking closely to our COVID-19 rules, so everyone feels safe.” Mr Stewart said 2021 also looms as a big year for the organisation. “We’re celebrating our 40th anniversary later on,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “The Cardiff Combined Pensioners and Senior Citizens was officially opened on Saturday 12 December 1981. “At its peak, it boasted more than 200

members. news CWA, VIEW clubs join the celebrations A number of local organisations took the opportunity to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) in the Hunter last week. The Belmont branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) acknowledged the occasion with members and guests dressing in purple or mauve; while VIEW (Voice Interests Education Women) clubs from Newcastle and Lake Macquarie hailed the achievements of inspirational females throughout the nation. “One of the ladies spoke about Women: Friendships, Action and Changes focusing on the IWD motto of Choose to Challenge and calling out gender bias and inequality,” said Belmont CWA secretary/publicity officer Dianne Davis of their function. “The talk also concentrated on the suffragette movement, the history of the CWA and how by our actions we can create change. “Lots of fun was had by all and included games with lucky door prizes and a ‘Women of Note’ trivia quiz. A great morning tea was topped off by a scrumptious cake made by members Kerry Warne and Marie Spicer.”

During the proceedings, Kath Stothard presented Nan Sellen a gift in appreciation for all the work she had done for Belmont CWA. Prospective members are very welcome and the group meets on a Tuesday between 9am and noon at the Uniting Church Hall, Milson Street, Charlestown. Meanwhile, Lake Macquarie City mayor Kay Fraser, Swansea MP Yasmin Catley, Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison and national president of VIEW Anne-Louise O’Conner were special guests at Central Leagues in Charlestown on 8 March. The theme for 2021 IWD, Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world, allowed everyone to recognise the tremendous accomplishments by women in Australia and their efforts to create lasting change. And, the troops assembled in their brightest footwear apparel, much to the delight of Green’s niece Marlie. The adorable six-year-old has Down syndrome – and is her uncle’s biggest fan, too. “Blake’s an amazing brother,” Mrs Baumann said. “He’s been a constant support since Marlie was born. “I can’t thank him and the Knights

enough for what they’re doing to raise awareness about World Down Syndrome Day and starting the conversation that it’s alright to be different. “They’ve done a lovely job [today]. “Marlie’s certainly enjoying herself out there. I’m very proud of him.” Green and his fellow Knights all wore brightly-coloured socks to Monday’s session, many of which acknowledged their junior rugby league clubs. “World Down Syndrome Day is on Sunday 21 March,” the playmaker explained. “So, I thought since we’re playing on Friday night (again), it was a good opportunity for us to raise awareness for support of the campaign – by wearing #LotsOfSocks – this week in the lead-up to the match.

The reward outweighs the challenges, Surrogate says It’s any day now for Josh and Jack Bowman-Pinnock and their surrogate Fiona Morrison. They’re doing all they can to induce labour, anything from drinking raspberry leaf tea to dancing. It’s not been an easy process to get here though, the husband and husband duo have been researching their options for about four years. After they got married in 2018, they knew they wanted to have a child, but it wasn't until 2019 that they met Raymond Terrace’s Fiona – the woman who would carry their baby. “I had jumped online to research surrogacy from about February 2019, it was something I always wanted to do,” Fiona said. “The reward you feel for giving is next level because you are creating life, you give up one year of your life to create life to make a family and give back. “It’s such a short time, it’s just a blimp, you’re giving up things you might enjoy doing but it isn’t

forever, and the reward is so worth it anyway. “That moment of handing over something that you grew and created for someone else will be incredible.” Prior to meeting Josh and Jack, the mother of two had paired with another couple, but it wasn’t the right fit. So, Fiona commented on the duo’s introductory post in the Australian Surrogacy Community Facebook group and the rest was history. “Fee commented on our post and sent us a message and we haven't stopped talking since,” Josh said. A few months later she offered to carry their baby and now they consider themselves a unique extended family. “It was amazing, we didn't think it would happen that quickly,” Josh said. “We heard a lot of stories from people that said it could take up to two years to find a surrogate so for Fee to offer after six months

was incredible, we were just over the moon. “We’re just like family in a Brady Bunch kind of way. “We couldn't imagine life without Fee and [her daughters], there is just an attachment there for us.” “We have a picture in the baby’s room of Fee pregnant so the baby will always know how it came into the world,” Jack added. Moving forward, Fiona will be involved in their lives forever. “She’ll be Auntie Fee,” Jack said. “There is never going to be a day where we don’t talk, I couldn’t event fathom it.” He adds they’re all incredibly excited to meet the baby. “People keep asking: ‘What do you want?’ and we always answer – a baby,” he said. “We don't care if it is a boy or a girl – we have names for both, we are ready, we just want them

to be happy and healthy.” However, Josh has a feeling it will be a boy. “I have a feeling in my waters it’s a boy,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve really channelled the pregnancy with Fee, like I have weird cravings, I have been sleeping poorly and we’re just connected on a different level, it’s crazy.” He adds they’re sharing their story to show others that “it is possible”. “We’re breaking down the barriers and making it more acceptable for gay parents like us to be out in the world and know that it’s normal, we’re just like any other parents we’ve just had to jump through a few more hoops to get there,” he said. They are staying at an Airbnb in New Lambton as they wait for the baby to arrive, if Fiona has not gone into labour by Thursday 1 April she will be induced.

They’ll stay at the home for a little while yet though, the separation process will be gradual. “We’ll just play it by ear because you don’t want to shock your body too much, my body thinks [the baby] is mine so that detachment and the adjustment of letting go may be hard because my body will want the baby,” Fiona said. “So, we will be in hospital together, and we’ll come back here together and then I might move back to my place in Raymond Terrace while they stay around for a bit and then eventually, and I don’t think it will take too long, I am pretty emotionally and mentally prepared, they’ll go home.” To follow along with their story, go to Jack and Josh’s Instagram page @the_sydney_ dads. - Elizabeth Symington

The answers to these questions, and more, will be unveiled at the annual A-Plus Contracting Hunter Valley Mining Charity Rugby League Day this weekend. One of the biggest events on the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) fundraising calendar, the tournament is set to feature 300 local coal miners locking horns for sporting supremacy at Singleton’s Pirtek Park on Saturday (20 March). And, organiser Danny Eather can’t wait for kick-off. “It’s been a long delay – about six months from our original date in

October (2020),” he said. “So, it’s nice to be getting things coordinated and bringing all the pieces of the puzzle together. “We’re still going to host our regular event in 2021, too. “Everyone’s keen to see more footy action happen.” The Wolves, Phoenix, Raiders and Grizzlies will take the field alongside the Glendell Gladiators, Ravensworth Rhinos, Saddlers Creek Sharks, Maules Creek Maulers, Rixs Creek Rattlesnakes, MTW Barbarians, Mt Owen Mustangs, Hunter Valley United Cobras, Ulan Warriors, Mt Arthur Meerkats, MTW Razorbacks and Bengalla Badgers. Like most organisations, who rely on the generosity of others, the WRHS was massively impacted by COVID-19 in 2020.

Steamed snapper fillets with ginger and spring onion by Kylie Kwong Serves 4

1/2 tsp white sugar

4 100g snapper fillets

2 Tbsp light soy sauce (gluten-free, if necessary)

80ml (1/3 cup) water

1/4 tsp sesame oil

2 Tbsp shao hsing

1/2 cup spring onion, julienned

2 Tbsp julienned ginger

1 1/2 Tbsp peanut oil

1 Chinese cabbage

1/4 cup coriander leaves

Place fish in a shallow, heatproof bowl that will fit inside a steamer basket. Pour water and shao hsing over fish, then sprinkle with half the ginger. Place the bowl inside the steamer and position over a deep saucepan or wok of boiling water. Steam, covered, for 5–6 minutes.

Remove cabbage from steamer and arrange on a serving plate. Using a spatula, carefully remove fish fillets from steamer, and place on top of the cabbage.

Cut Chinese cabbage into squares and slip inside steamer. Cover and steam for a further 2–3 minutes or until cabbage has warmed through and fish is just cooked. The flesh should be white; if it is still translucent, cook for another minute or so.

Serves 4 1 medium sweet potato, scrubbed, cut into wedges 1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil 1 1/2 Tbsp miso paste 1 1/2 Tbsp mirin (or lime juice)

Chop chives, to serve and lightly spray sweet potato with oil, season and cook in a large char-grill pan or barbecue over medium-high heat for 10-12 minutes or until tender. Set aside to cool slightly. Meanwhile, in a small bowl combine half the oil with miso paste and mirin (or lime juice). Season and brush cutlets with the dressing.

Reheat the same large char-grill pan or barbecue over medium-high heat and cook cutlets, in batches, for 2-3 minutes each side or until cooked to your liking. Set aside on a plate loosely covered with foil to rest for 5 minutes. In a large bowl, combine baby rocket, pears, celery and sweet potato. Drizzle with remaining oil

Newcastle’s Glenn Dormand honours music icon Gudinski Aussie music icon Michael Gudinski touched the lives of many during his 68 years on the planet, including Newcastle’s Glenn Dormand. So when the world woke to the news of Gudinski’s passing on the morning of Tuesday 2 March, Dormand, like many others, felt an instant sense of loss. “When I first heard the news, I was shocked,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of friends in the [music] industry and we all just rang each other. “It was really strange, a bit surreal. “I think it was because he [Gudinski] was such a connector of people; you just wanted to connect with the people who knew him, as though that would make sense of it all somehow.” Dormand, better known as Chit Chat Von Loopin Stab, is a songwriter, musician, record producer, radio announcer, TV presenter and

filmmaker based in Newcastle. Renowned for his role as one of the founding members of the band Machine Gun Fellatio, which formed in 1996 and played at large festivals including Big Day Out, St Kilda Festival and Livid, calling it a day in 2005. Dormand’s latest venture sees him partner up with filmmaker Tony Whittaker to produce a set of a dozen short films documenting the history of Newcastle entitled ‘Stories of our Town’. Dormand says he first met Gudinski more than 20 years ago. The Melbourne-based businessman was the founder of Mushroom Group. He is famed for kickstarting the careers of music greats including Kylie Minogue, Jimmy Barnes, Skyhooks, Split Enz, Yothu Yindi and Archie Roach. “Gudinski signed me when I was a

songwriter,” Dormand said. “That was wild, I mean it was Michael Gudinski and he loved my songwriting! “I was invited to his home in Mount Macedon (Victoria), and that whole experience was amazing. “He’d fly in other songwriters and he’d sit us all in a room and we’d write a song. “It was all about creating new songs and some of those songs ended up on our records.” Continued on page 26

Hello Hollywood: Zac Garred’s move pays off You can take the boy out of Newcastle, but you can’t take Newcastle out of the boy. That modified saying reigns true when it comes to ex-pat and actor Zac Garred. Zac has been calling Los Angeles home for the past seven years and, while he loves it, he often finds himself missing the place he grew up for “just a second”. The 34-year-old is best known for his roles in Foreign Exchange, General Hospital, Occupation and its new sequel Occupation: Rainfall. Even though he has some big titles on his list, Zac’s career started in high school when he performed in plays around Newcastle. He says his family’s connection to the city remains strong. “My family were merchant mariners, so my grandad jumped on a ship here when he was 14 and that was it,” Zac said. “He went around the world and worked in the dredges for years, so my family’s connection is very deep to the harbour. “I also love Bar Beach; it’s our beach, dad always took us there. “It sounds really silly, this is very specific, but there was also a spot up the top of Queens Road in New Lambton and it’s beautiful. “You can see straight down into the city but you back onto Blackbutt, so you feel like you’re in the bush but you can see the beaches. “So, that is always an image I have in my head when I am not here, it’s really special for me.” Zac says even though LA is his home at times he wishes he could return. “My first 12 months in LA I was like: ‘oh god, oh dear, oh dear, I don’t know if I can do this I just want to go back’ but I didn’t and I

am glad I stayed,” he said. “So, homesickness now is just ‘oh I’d just like to go back for a second, I just want to go and jump in the water for a second, I just want to have a beer at the beaches for a second, that kind of a thing. “I’m less connected to the place and more connected to people, the place is amazing but the Newcastle that I grew up in has evolved into this really exciting, fascinating and I think very evocative new space. “However, the Newcastle where my grandfather dredged the harbour is totally gone. “But, the character permeates and it makes amazing artists and inquisitive, open and honest people. There is something that is forged in the place that I always miss.” Zac’s made use of his time across the ocean though having starred in several films and TV shows. However, he often returns for roles in Australia, like his next project Australian Gangster which will air on Channel 7 in 2021. Occupation: Rainfall was released earlier this year and includes some international and national stars in its cast, including Ken Jeong (Crazy Rich Asians), Daniel Gillies (The Originals), Dan Ewing (Love and Monsters) and Dena Kaplan (Dance Academy). The Australian-made alien invasion blockbuster picks up from where Occupation left off. Directed by Luke Sparke, it follows an intergalactic invasion where survivors in Sydney are fighting back. As casualties mount by the day, the resistance and their unexpected allies uncover a plot that could see the war come to an end – the race is on to save mankind. “This has been such an immense project that I’ve been involved in now for two years,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “To see it come to fruition and on the big screen and to see the reactions it’s getting is very rewarding.

“It was thrilling to shoot. “Action [films are] always fun, it’s demanding and taxing but fun and worth it to see people’s reactions.” Moving forward, Zac’s goal is to continue to act and develop as an artist. - Elizabeth Symington

will forever be remembered as a trailblazer within the music industry Dormand says. “When people in the industry get together they tend to talk about the good old days,” he explained. “All he [Gudinski] ever wanted to talk about was his latest signing and his latest tour. It was the fact that he only looked forward that he was so successful I think. “Pioneer is a word I’ve heard a lot, that’s what he was.” Gudinski reportedly died in his sleep from a suspected heart attack. He was 68 years old. “People say he died young,” Dormand said. “He was wild, he was chaotic and I’m sure he didn’t sleep. “He literally lived at least 10 lives in one.” For all his business, Gudinski’s legacy is certain to include his charitable deeds, Dormand says, including his ability to pull together an event. “Gudinski led the charge on Sound Relief and WaveAid,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “They were massive charity events and he led the charge for both of them. “He got bands to come and play, big, big names. He could just pull these things together. When we had all these bushfires and floods he immediately had everyone on speed dial. “It wouldn’t matter who he called, people would agree to help out straight away. Not many people have that refedex and that determination to want to help.” And, to receive a phone call

from the man with the legendary husky voice was an honour, Dormand admits, regardless of the hour. When he was producing a documentary series entitled Great Music Cities of the World in 2012, Dormand was on the receiving end of one of those calls. “It was the night the Melbourne episode aired,” he said. “I was sitting on the couch at about 12 o’clock and my phone went with a private number. “It was Michael, with his gruff voice going ‘Right, yes, I just watched Melbourne and I gotta say you nailed it‘. “He spent 15 minutes telling me all the great things that were in the show and then said: ‘That’s all I got to say. Good night’ and hung up. “It couldn’t have been a better compliment. I mean God could have called me up and it wouldn’t have felt as good.” The last time Dormand spoke to Gudinski was 12 months ago after he’d sent a copy of his latest documentary ‘The Star Hotel’ to his former booking agent, whose office was next door to Gudinski’s in Melbourne. “He called to say how much he loved the film but then Michael started yelling in the background. “I could hear this ‘Argh Chit Chat how’s it going?’, in his distinctive voice,” Dormand smiles. “He will be missed.” * A state memorial service will take place for Michael Gudinski in Melbourne on Wednesday 24 March. - Rebecca Riddle

Olives are drought hardy A question commonly asked: Is there a difference between black and green olives as they grow on the same tree? The answer is simply that black are ripe while green need to be pickled.

Hence, black and green fruit are found on the tree at the same time. I am not a good consultant on olives as I don’t enjoy the fruit in any colour. Pickled or not. But, I do value the tree as versatile for coastal gardens as they grow quickly and tend to weather coastal winds. Its grey foliage works perfectly with white, planted among lavender with a buxus border. In fact, with minimal care, olive trees will live and produce fruit for more than a thousand years. This hardy tree will grow anywhere in Australia where there is a cold winter and a warm summer. I should qualify this by adding that although olives are evergreen, they need a cool winter to prepare

for shooting, flowering and fruiting in the spring. They are happy in average daily maximum temperatures above 30 degrees but can survive in conditions as high as 50 degrees. There are varieties that prefer a winter frost, while most survive and grow well in no-frost areas as long as the winters are cold enough. Olives are drought hardy and will tolerate most types of soil, preferring a neutral pH. Don’t plant in soils that are heavy or store water after excessive rain. Disease doesn’t present many problems - watch for Peacock Spot, a fungal disease that causes defoliation. Copper fungicides will help control this problem.
