From the editor Here we are – our last edition for 2020. This week’s cover promotes The Salvation Army’s ongoing contribution to the community, with the charity donating toys to children in need and special Christmas hampers to families suffering from food poverty. The Eastlakes branch will also host its ‘Avenue of Trees’ event to help spread some festive cheer and goodwill after one of the toughest years in recent memory. Read more about the campaign on page 16. I want to say thank you – firstly to our loyal readers for your support and kind feedback throughout the year. We didn’t print the magazine for a month when COVID-19 hit Australia hard back in late March but, when we returned, it was heartening to see how many people seemed to miss our publication and appreciated the work we do. And, to our small but extremely hardworking team – Melessa, Kath, Peter, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Rod, Julie, and Calum – 2020 has been full of challenges and changes, but we made it to the finish line. news Grandma’s cuddles back on the cards this Christmas Janice McKay says embracing her grandchildren again is like a dream come true. Kept apart for six months during lockdown, the Lake Macquarie grandmother spent her days finding creative ways to maintain a bond they’d shared for almost a decade. The trio had been playing Snakes and Ladders and reading stories to one another online since COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic in March. But it still didn’t alleviate her need to see her grandchildren, nineyear-old Liora and her seven-yearold brother Samson. This was the pair she had minded twice a week since they were babies. Embracing them both again, after what felt like years apart, has been an early Christmas gift.

“It’s been wonderful,” Janice told Newcastle Weekly. “I had missed being with them so much.” Troubled with the task of explaining the coronavirus to Liora and Samson earlier this year, Janice, a clinical psychologist, put pen to paper, releasing the book Villony Virus Comes to Town in July. It is based on a creepy main character named Villony Virus who attempts to take over the town with its soldiers that can jump 1.5 metres and prefer older adults. The story has a positive, with some clever scientists continuing to work hard to find a vaccine that will hopefully bring about a happy ending. of communication surrounding COVID-19. As far as her grandchildren are concerned, the coronavirus continues to hover at the edges of “normal life”. “Like many children I have been speaking to lately, although life is fine for them, they are very aware that life is still different,” Janice said. “[Liora] said she still feels a bit scared for the future. It was a massive improvement to return to school and to be able to see

grandparents, however, they still can’t have parents or grandparents at the school. “There was no normal end-ofyear presentation day [and] they can’t mix with the whole school at lunch time.” Despite the ongoing challenges, Janice can’t wait to spend Christmas Day with Liora and Samson and is looking forward to crossing the Victorian border to see her other grandchildren. - Rebecca Riddle

Tributes pour in for Bobby Bobby Palmer will forever be remembered by his mates as a Devil – a Shortland Devil, that is. The 54-year-old rugby league lover was killed in tragic circumstances, while walking his daughter’s dog, following an

altercation with a 24-year-old man at the weekend. Police allege shortly after 8pm on Saturday 12 December, a young male entered a service station on Sandgate Road, Shortland, armed with a knife. It is believed he threatened an employee before running to a second service station, also on the same street. There, he became involved in an argument with Mr Palmer. Witnesses told officers the dispute became physical with the older man sustaining a stab wound to his abdomen. Heartbreakingly, the father-oftwo died at the scene. Newcastle City Police District then attended a home on Sandgate Road where they arrested the 24-year-old, after he was tasered, and later charged him with murder. The community is still coming to terms with the local identity’s

untimely death. “Bobby was taken from us too soon – and will be terribly missed,” a spokesperson for the Shortland Devils Rugby League Football Club said. “Our thoughts are with his family first and foremost; and we extend our deepest sympathies to them. “Bobby was ‘Shorty’ through and through, from playing for the club in his younger days. “And, later, as a long-term member of the Devils. “He was an integral part of the organisation. “His service continued right up until this year where he regularly marked the lines at Tuxford Park. “And he was known to mow the field by push mower after the recent theft of the club’s ride-on. “Everyone in Shortland is certainly mourning the loss of his short life [today].” - Rod Thompson

Owl hits driver, police in a flap A low flying owl hit a delivery driver in the head, causing him to crash into a parked car in Belmont North at the weekend. The driver, a 21-year-old male from Birmingham Gardens, was travelling west on John Street at 10.30pm on Saturday (12 December) when the owl flew through his open window. The bird then struck his head, with the impact stunning the driver – and owl; causing the van to collide with an unattended parked car, which left considerable damage to both vehicles. The driver of the van, fearing he would be attacked for a second time, jumped from his vehicle and was assisted by nearby residents, one of whom photographed the owl seated on the dash of the van. The owl failed to exchange particulars and made good his escape before the police arrived on scene. If you recognise the owl, please contact your nearest police station.

Posting images of the businesses that stretch the main streets of Branxton and Greta, the group’s focus is reminding people of what community feels like. “Our main street is the focus,” Ms Barnes said. “You can sit and watch the world go by without the shopping mall feeling. “It’s community, that old-fashioned feeling of belonging, where everyone knows your name and says hello. “Those little touches that are missing in big cities.” The introduction of the Hunter Expressway in 2016 meant Branxton’s

An old bank safe in the middle of a café in town, a pet shop that locals refer to as ‘the zoo’, and a 1930s horse trough in the main street. These are just a few of the historic idiosyncrasies that make Branxton a ‘must-see’ place, according to Retro Trail Hunter Valley creator Kim Barnes. Formed in May 2020, the Retro Trail team, as they are known, is a collection of locals who are passionate about promoting the townships of Branxton and Greta. Located just 15 minutes from the Hunter Valley vineyards, the towns’ combined 5,000 residents decided to share their stories in a bid to draw more visitors to the area postlockdown. “We just wanted people to have a place to travel to in their mind,” Ms Barnes said. “A place to look forward to seeing

main street was no longer a regular thoroughfare, a path well-worn by mining traffic since the 1900s. “This is where they came to shop,” Ms Barnes said. “And that is still the case now. “Our idea is to feature the heritage aspects of the town but with modern ideas.” The adage about everything old being new again forms part of the group’s ethos. “People from Sydney and Newcastle are becoming more interested in the area as a renewed love for regional tourism with authentic heritage is emerging,” Ms Barnes said. “It’s like people are seeking another time and finding it here in Branxton and Greta. “Maybe that feel for nostalgia is quite comforting for people in these uncertain times.” Through ongoing support from Cessnock City Council, Retro Trail Hunter Valley has been maintaining

a constant flow of professional imagery across its Instagram and Facebook sites. With Christmas fast approaching, Ms Barnes said the group had turned its attention to creating a festive feel within the dual townships. A ‘Light up our Streets’ campaign, launched by the group earlier this month, has welcomed the adornment of Christmas lights across many of the area’s 1930s heritage-listed buildings. “We wanted something that once again made us all feel connected,” Ms Barnes said. “And I think this demonstrates the strength of the Retro Trail team, it’s not just us, it’s the businesses embracing and supporting this idea, and we love them for it.” Richardson and Wrench Branxton real estate agent and Retro Trail committee member Andrew Thomas is the fourth generation in his family to call the township home. news Sunshine Coast the latest ‘staycation’ destination Hunter residents looking for a ‘staycation’ have received a boost after Newcastle Airport confirmed a new destination for domestic jetsetters. The airport announced a 12week service to Queensland’s iconic Sunshine Coast, with flights set to take off early in the new year. Chief executive Dr Peter Cock said the new route came on the back of strong demand for domestic holidaying from Novocastrians in the wake of an easing of COVID-19imposed travel restrictions. “Forecasts suggest our region is outperforming most others in terms of air travel and we hope to see this demand continue to climb in the lead up to Christmas,” Dr Cock said. “We have found ourselves in several discussions regarding new

route opportunities in the last couple of months and it’s no surprise the Sunshine Coast has emerged as a new service from Newcastle. “Equally, this new service offers a chance for our region to showcase its wares to Queenslanders. “Greater access to the vibrant city of Newcastle, beautiful coastline of Port Stephens and the amazing food and wine of the Hunter Valley is a great result for the local visitor economy.” Fly Pelican will operate the service, which will include three return flights per week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. news Family can’t rest until justice is served A grief-stricken Peter Hallett admits his family “cannot rest until justice is served”. The brother of murdered Hunter woman Melissa Hunt addressed the media earlier this month, more than 26 years after her body was located near Stockrington. The NSW Government, together with the NSW Police Force, announced a $1 million reward for information into her homicide. Mrs Hunt, then aged 22, was found near the weir wall of Burrenjim Dam, Bluegum Creek, on Monday 25 April 1994. A post-mortem examination revealed she died from severe head injuries. Mr Hallett said he hoped the reward would help detectives uncover new leads to finally provide justice for his sister and family. “Melissa was deeply loved by our family and we have never stopped missing her and desperately wishing that her life had not been cut short,” he stated. “We should not just have memories of Melissa’s beautiful dark eyes, her mischievous laugh, musical talent, eye for detail, passion for

writing and fierce love for her family and two children. “We should all be able to hold her now. “After 26 years of despairing grief, we are hoping that someone will come forward and help police identify those responsible for her death. “Melissa was robbed of her life and of her right to know and love her children.” Strike Force Impey, comprised of detectives from the Lake Macquarie Police District and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, was formed to investigate her death. However, no arrests have been made. Following a coronial inquest in 1998, the matter was sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for review and referred to the Unsolved Homicide Unit. A formal review of the investigation was conducted under the new unsolved framework and is now under reinvestigation by detectives attached to Strike Force Circulo. As inquiries continue, police are renewing their appeal to the community to come forward with any information that may assist

Spreading Christmas cheer after a tough year for many Goodwill and Christmas cheer are being spread across the Hunter after a tough 12 months. The Eastlakes Salvation Army branch in Lake Macquarie is hoping to alleviate some of the stresses of the festive period, which, even in so-called ‘normal’ times, pose an enormous financial challenge for families.

This year, the charity will donate toys to children in need and special Christmas hampers to families suffering from food poverty. Eastlakes Corps’ Auxiliary Lieutenant, Pastor Terri Muendel, said COVID-19 had taken a toll on many people’s emotional and mental wellbeing. “The biggest thing we’ve noticed

is the mental pressure on people and the isolation, that’s probably been the hardest thing for people this year,” she said. “Particularly when you can’t gather, such as our church family couldn’t gather for a long time – that really takes its toll on people and there’s a grief in that disconnection.” Research undertaken as part of the Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal revealed more people were feeling anxious (32%), depressed (25%), lonely (29%), stressed (36%), and more uncertain (38%) when compared with last year. It also highlighted that 5.1 million Australians (26%) were concerned about being able to pay for Christmas expenses this year compared to 2019, with 23% feeling pressure to spend more than they could afford. Pastor Muendel said 150 families had registered to receive children’s toys that were donated to the charity. “People come through and pick out whatever they need for their kids

at Christmas time – it’s all free,” she said. “And we like to let them choose so there’s dignity in that for them. “I had to go to Lake Munmorah and Newcastle [Permanent] to pick up six trolley loads of toys from one lady, so people are being incredibly generous.” Apart from the toy and hamper donations, Eastlakes will also conduct a three-day ‘Avenue of Trees’ event. Men’s shed eager to build on work in the community A substantial state government grant could prove to be a game-changer for the Maitland Community Men’s Shed. One of the most impressive facilities of its kind in NSW, the

Jubilee Street premises boasts a garden; workshop; outdoor barbecue area; two morning tea rooms; woodwork, steelwork and computer/IT sections; boardroom, games room and much more.

Courtesy of the 2020 Community Building Partnership Program, the members have now received $64,261 for the purchase and installation of a new wheelchair-accessible lift. “We’re extremely blessed to gain funding, thanks to Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison,” Maitland Community Men’s Shed vicepresident Steve O’Brien said. “When I told the members about it [recently], they all applauded the good news. “Over the years, it’s become increasingly harder for some of the blokes to get up to the mezzanine area and store room, for example. “And, these days, it’s also an OH&S issue. Unfortunately, we missed our [grant application] window in 2019. “But, we applied for the funding this time around. “The $65,000 is the said cost of the lift itself. “So, we were very happy to get the money. In fact, we’re stoked.

“The community and business support we receive is fantastic, too, especially Maitland Toyota.” The shed’s project coordinator Ted Borradaile stated the new addition would assist everyone. “It will give the members, and any visitors, more access,” he said. “We have a lot of schools visit [here], as well as groups such as Mai-Wel. “Plus, there are projects going all the time. “We recently installed a kitchen at the Aspect Hunter School at Thornton, which caters for children across the autism spectrum. “They’re really beautiful people. “The fellas also built a cubby house for the East Maitland Lions Club for their annual Christmas raffle at Green Hills. “We’ve completed a lot of little jobs for elderly residents, too. “We try to help the community out as much as we can.” The Maitland Community Men’s

Shed, which officially opened its doors in 2010, enjoys a strong membership of 140. “We get anywhere between 25 and 40 [a day],” Mr O’Brien said. “And, we’re open five days a week, from 8.30am until 2.30pm. “As for COVID-19, it just means we’ve changed the way we do things. “There are numerous [safety] protocols in place. “However, the main premise of the organisation is that it gives many men a purpose – the wealth of knowledge among the guys is unbelievable. “For instance, ex-St George Dragons’ rugby league champion Johnny King is a member, as was the late Eddie Lumsden. “We accept blokes from all walks of life. Usually, each has a different skill set or talent. “But, we don’t solely work on projects, we enjoy a chat and a cup of tea as well.

“I’ve seen a lot of people turn themselves around at the men’s shed,” Mr Borradaile added. “That’s why places like this are important.” The Maitland Community Men’s Shed was just one of 15 beneficiaries to share in $300,000. “I am delighted that guys with mobility issues will now be able to take a more active part in the operations of the group,” Ms Aitchison said. “Research has shown how beneficial it is for men to be part of these organisations. “It’s terrific we can make it accessible for even more Maitland men.” Applications for the next round will open in early 2021. news Dumped trolleys swamp waterways Newcastle Rowing Club president John McLeod says abandoned shopping trolleys are the bane of the city’s waterways. Submerged and trapped in sediment, he believes the forsaken carts put his rowers at risk. Club members are now taking a proactive approach to managing trolleys, with rowers immediately contacting the supermarket’s collection firms if they see them on the streets in Carrington or Wickham. They’re hoping the fast action will keep them out of Throsby Creek. “We see them in the creek from time-to-time and unless the tide is low you can’t see them and they damage the boats,” he said. “If they’ve been there a long time who knows how much rust is covering them and my rowers are then at greater risk if they fall on them. “We’ve reported them, we’ve retrieved some of them. “But something needs to be done to stop the trolleys from leaving the shopping precinct in the first place.” Mr McLeod says alerting the trolleys’ owners is the first step to getting something done about them.

“If everybody reported them, the owners would hopefully do something about it,” he said. The Carrington-based rowing club and its 100 members are just one of the groups affected by the city’s abandoned trolley problem, according to Newcastle Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen. Councillor Clausen has been advocating for the removal of the city’s abandoned trolleys for months, after local Newcastle residents’ groups urged the council to get involved. A motion to address the city’s abandoned shopping trolleys was unanimously passed at a council meeting in late November. “I don’t have an exact number [of abandoned trolleys] but would say that it is in the many hundreds,” Cr Clausen said. “Just [a few] weeks ago, I supported a resident’s request to remove trolleys from a stormwater channel and, in response, a total of 22 trolleys were removed in just one section of creek.” Notifying shops has been another approach Cr Clausen has taken. “In terms of a broader update, I’ve also been in touch with Trolley Tracker, which looks after trolleys

for brands [like] Woolworths, Big W, Dan Murphy’s and Officeworks,” he said. “They noted the impact and have committed to following up and paying particular attention to trolley management across all their stores in the Newcastle area. Fingers crossed the above actions help reduce this issue.” Aside from inconvenience and potential danger, the removal of trolleys is costly as well. “Dumped shopping trolleys are costly for council to collect, especially when they find their way into our creeks and waterways,” Cr Clausen said. “The best way to manage trolleys is to keep them at shopping centres.” - Rebecca Riddle

Hopping into a positive perspective on pandemic Can you imagine what the pandemic might look like to a pair of rabbits? An emerging children’s author in Newcastle has published a book that explores just that. Former University of Newcastle student Meg Blackburn put together the story in a bid to inform children about the pandemic in a way they could understand. “I was inspired by the lockdown and my rabbits, Bessie and Bean,” Meg said. “I’m not really up to date with what happens, so I’m normally asking the question: ‘What on earth is going on?’ “Especially during COVID, and I was thinking children are probably thinking the same thing, along with other vulnerable people. “So, I wanted to create a book

which was to inform rather than alarm and make it fun and visually appealing, rather than the big scary things all over the news.” Titled The Spotty Socked Lops, the book begins as Bessie and Bean realise the world has come to a stop, so they set out on a mission to uncover why. The bunnies visit landmarks in Newcastle, including the foreshore and Newcastle Beach. Only these popular spots seem a little unusual – they no longer house large crowds, with not even a single soul to be found. By the end of the book, the ‘splendid team’ realise it would have been safer to stay at home and they call on readers to help make a positive impact during a year that has been a “wrecking ball of fear”.

Meg said she was very proud of the book. “All up it took about seven weeks to write and illustrate it,” she said. “It was for my end of year assignment, and [at the time] writing a book, especially a rhyming book, seemed impossible to me but it just all came [together] when I was in the kitchen.” She added that there were more stories to come. “The next one I am working on is Bessie and Bean meet the Queen –

news Cleary at the top of his game Take a tip from nonagenarian Tom Cleary: you’re never too old to try anything new. The 94-year-old Toronto Croquet Club member is, arguably, one of the eldest “active” players in the state – and he wouldn’t have it any other way. In fact, he credits the sport for not only revitalising himself but helping him through an extremely tough period. “My wife [Iris] died eight years ago; we’d been married 65,” Cleary said. “So, I was totally devastated when she passed away. “To be honest, I couldn’t stop crying for about two years – I’d often break down at the shops or at home. “It was a terrible situation. “Then, one day, a lady said to me: ‘why don’t you give croquet a go?’

“And, here I am; I’m now a regular.” The former Wangi Power Station employee, who spent four decades in the energy industry, admitted it was the best decision he had made in a long time. “When I got down here [at the Toronto club], the first person I saw was Kevin Davies, who I knew,” Cleary said. “That relaxed me straight away. “The people [here] are great; they’ve been utterly fantastic. “I received all the assistance in the world when I started, which was a blessing. “They’re excellent to be around – and I love the camaraderie. “We’re all there for each other.” As for croquet itself, Cleary admitted he was a “massive fan”. “It’s a very serious game, even though it’s played in a friendly,

sport Fernleigh Trackâ€™s new facility Design is underway on a new $200,000 amenities block near the end of the Fernleigh Track at Belmont. The facility, which will include an accessible toilet, two unisex toilets and bike racks, meets the demand of cyclists and pedestrians, who have long requested additional amenities at the southern end of the track. It is expected to open towards the end of 2021 and will feature vertical hardwood timber cladding to help it blend in with its bushland surrounds, as well as a polished concrete hand basin and roof water drainage that connects directly into a rain garden. Lake Macquarie City Council project manager Tess Dziwulski said a similar concept had been successfully implemented at Webb

Park in Redhead. â€œWe want this to be more than just a functional amenities block â€“ itâ€™s designed to complement the surrounding landscape and demonstrate water-sensitive urban design principles that reflect the natural environment,â€? she said. New bike racks installed adjacent to the amenities block will ensure cyclists using the facility can leave their bikes unattended. 250g butter, diced and softened

395g can condensed milk

1 1/4 cups caster sugar

1 tsp McKenzie’s ground cinnamon

2/3 cup golden syrup 4 extra large eggs 2 3/4 cups plain flour 2 tsp McKenzie’s baking powder 1 tsp McKenzie’s bi-carb soda 2 tsp McKenzie’s ground ginger 1 tsp McKenzie’s mixed spice 1 1/3 cups warm milk Cinnamon cream 300ml thickened cream 200g mascarpone 1/4 cup icing sugar mixture, sifted 1 tsp McKenzie’s ground cinnamon

250g plain sweet biscuits

Extra McKenzie’s desiccated coconut, for rolling Rosemary sprigs, for decoration Pre-heat oven to 180°C (160°C fanforced). Grease and line the base and sides of 2 x 20cm cake pans. Place butter, sugar and golden syrup in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until pale and creamy. Add eggs one at a time until well incorporated. Fold in the flour, baking powder, bi-carb and spices, alternately with the milk, until the batter is smooth and well combined. Pour between the prepared pans and bake for 45-50 minutes until golden and an inserted skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool, before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, cut each cake in half, to form four layers. For the cream, beat cream with electric beaters until soft peaks form, add mascarpone, icing sugar and cinnamon, mixing until well combined and mixture has thickened. Refrigerate until required. Cinemas owners eye off big Boxing Day Hunter cinemas are counting on Boxing Day to reignite the industry following a tough year. While most complexes in the region re-opened their doors in July, after nearly a four-month shutdown, guests have been slow to return to watch their favourite actors and actresses on the big screen. But, with touted blockbusters such as Wonder Woman: 1984 and The Croods: A New Age slated for release on 26 December, the future of cinema is looking bright once again. “Traditionally, it’s our busiest period,” Hoyts Charlestown manager Steve Cooper said. “And, we’re hoping that’s the case later this month. I’m confident having content like Wonder Woman: 1984 and The Croods: A New Age will see people back at cinemas across Australia in stronger numbers.”

Plants will bake as you bask in the sun Understandably, Christmas can be the garden’s most neglected time of year – that is if your garden is being deserted for a long summer break. While you are away basking in the sun, your plants will most likely be baking. This week’s rain can’t last for too long, so prepare your garden to survive the hot weather. Firstly, apply Saturaid or Wettasoil around newly planted garden beds, then add a thick layer of sugar cane mulch, which will help hold moisture if it does rain. It helps to enlist help from neighbours or relatives to give the lawns and gardens a deep water every three days. I often find holidaymakers come back to their lawn decimated by army grub – it may help to apply a product for this pest before leaving.

To those gardeners staying at home, summer pests will be out with a vengeance, the worst of these being mealy bug which presents as sticky cotton wool which can be hard to beat. It will be necessary to spray with Malathon and White Oil, repeated in 10 days’ time. If you purchased a living Christmas tree, just another reminder that they will need a water once a week, hopefully before you decorated it, and then

placed it in a deep saucer. After Christmas, don’t whip off the decorations and plunge it straight out in full sun. The secret is to gently hose it down, fertilise with a soluble fertiliser, then give it shade, gradually easing it out into morning sun until summer is over. Wishing you all a happy and healthy Christmas – look for the first edition in the New Year when I will begin the yearly gardening calendar.

The Grinch believes some of his best qualities are his bad attitude, temper, and small heart. However, after setting out on a mission to ruin Christmas and meeting Cindy Lou Who, Grinch comes to understand the holiday and why the people of Whoville love it so much, he even joins them for Christmas and helps carve the ‘roast beast’. “Ah, there’s nothing like the holidays,” he says.
