This week... From the editor Summer is well and truly here. I spent almost the entire weekend inside to save my pasty white skin from the scorching sun. I’ll venture outside on the odd occasion during the summer break to go for a swim, grab a coffee or – if I’m feeling really inspired – hack my way around the golf course. Generally, I draw the line at nine holes (unless I take a buggy – yes, I know, I’m lazy). So, a challenge that many golfers, both regulars and otherwise, will face this month is impressive. The Longest Day, an annual fundraiser each December, has been organised by the Cancer Council so it can conduct life-saving research, deliver prevention campaigns, and support people as they navigate through their cancer journey. While the official day is on Monday 14 December, golfers can tee off anytime throughout the month and complete either The Long Day (36 holes), The Longer Day (54 holes), or the ultimate test, The Longest Day (72 holes). Australians love being out in the sun but, unfortunately, we have the highest rates of melanoma in the world, with more than 15,000 people expected to be diagnosed this year. So, if you fancy a big day of golf for a worthy cause (while being sun smart, of course), then flick to page 13 to read more about the initiative. - Ben Murphy

news Officers praised for actions Two Maitland police officers who went “above and beyond the call of duty” were recognised for their empathetic actions last week. Port Stephens-Hunter Police District Senior Constables Jenna Stedman and Steve Drane recently aided an elderly couple navigating tremendous loss. Ilona Griggs’ husband of 52 years, Daniel, was receiving treatment at the Calvary Mater Hospital in Newcastle for stage 4 brain cancer when she received a call to say that he had just half an hour to live. Unfortunately, Mrs Griggs does not drive, and, in desperation, she phoned Maitland Police Station to ask for assistance. Within minutes, Senior Constables Stedman and Drane were at Mrs Griggs’ home to convey her to the Calvary Mater Hospital post haste.
They then accompanied her all the way to her husband’s bedside. Thanks to the deeds of the duo, Mrs Griggs was able to sit with Daniel – and spend a few precious moments with him before he died. “Although we met under terrible circumstances, it was nice that we could help Ilona out,” Senior Constable Drane said. “Jenna and I didn’t second-guess ourselves; we were just happy to assist. From what we understood, he didn’t have long to live. “So, it was vitally important Ilona could see Mr Griggs.” The pair’s selfless efforts also caught the attention of Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison, who acknowledged the incident in a Community Recognition Statement in the Legislative Assembly of Parliament of NSW in September. the local member presented Senior Constables Stedman and Drane with copies of her moving speech. “Small gestures like this, while dealing with other police issues, are things that make a huge impact on someone’s life,” Ms Aitchison said. “It also enhances the relationship between our ‘men and women in blue’ and the community. “They [the officers] were there when we needed them. “Ilona will be eternally grateful for the Senior Constables’ actions,

news Bon voyage: Setting sail on 10-year journey around globe

For the past year, Will Fantom and his sidekick ‘Mistchief’ have been sailing around Newcastle to learn the ins and outs of being on the water ahead of an incredible
journey. On Saturday 26 December, the pair will climb aboard their British-built Colvic Countess 37 Cutter Rig yacht to embark on a 10year voyage around the world.
It’s all for a good cause, too, with Mr Fantom using the trip to raise awareness and money for sailing initiatives that support the lives of people of all abilities. He is labelling his journey as ‘Solo Sailor for the Disabled’ and hopes people will follow along while he sails around the world. “Whilst here in Newcastle, I have been prepping to ultimately fulfil my dreams of a 10-year solo circumnavigation of every single continental coastline on the planet,” he says. “We will start in Sydney on 26 December, and we will follow the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race down to Tasmania. “I’m going to unofficially race them – I reckon I am in for a fair[ly] good chance, then we will loop around back up the east coast, around the rest of Australia over
the next two years, stopping at various sailing clubs and saying hello.” After sailing around Australia, Mr Fantom will then leave our waters to visit the rest of the world. “It’s going to be a challenge and a half once Australia is over – that’s the easy part,” he says. “But as long as I can see the Southern Cross and have a compass, I’ll be right. “I’ve learnt the true exploratory nature of how they got across the planet with just a wing and a prayer and sheer determination.” Mr Fantom also has plans to enter Mistchief in the Guinness Book of Records as the first dog to be documented sailing around the world. For Mr Fantom, it’s not the first time he’s taken on a treacherous 10-year journey.

In 2003, after suffering a mental breakdown, he was diagnosed with agoraphobia, a type of anxiety disorder in which you fear and avoid places or situations that might cause you to panic and make you feel trapped, helpless or embarrassed. Mr Fantom then bought some horses and travelled around the countryside to find himself while raising awareness for Riding for the Disabled – a voluntary, not-forprofit organisation that provides opportunities for anyone with a disability to enjoy horse riding. “The relationship I had with the horses was amazing – the horses gave me security, direction and purpose,” he says. “They became family – they weren’t beast and burden, I learnt more about myself and the things I had already known, they became more apparent because of the patience you have to have with a horse. “After about 10 years of travelling around the countryside, I eventually came into sailing. “Once the horses had passed away, I prayed and put it out there and they just weren’t coming back, so I knew it wasn’t what I was meant to do. “Then I came across a YouTube video of a young couple who were sailing around the Solomon [Islands] to the non-tourist destinations, helping out the locals with food, providing education
material and telecommunications, and I loved it. “It was a maintainable lifestyle that appealed to that type of nature I had about being away from society and being independent of it all.” Mr Fantom had never sailed a day in his life but he was determined to learn. So, after tragically losing his mother, he purchased Sailing Vessel Skeese with the money she left to him and will keep her in his thoughts as he journeys around the world. He has a few people to thank for helping make his dream a reality. “I’m grateful for Watermakers Australia, Brew Tales at Wickham, ClientSat Communications, and the Foran Foundation for providing support over the years to get me this far,” he says. “Thanks to their help, I am completely self-sufficient of landbased resources, providing I can catch a fish. news Hunter surfers to hit waves in aid of beloved Neil The Hunter surfing community will band together this weekend to assist one of their own. Neil Goldsmith endured a lifechanging motor scooter accident overseas, on 17 July, which left him a quadriplegic. The avid surfer suffered spinal injuries, paralysis and the need for facial reconstruction surgery. Worse still, the experience also came at a massive financial cost to him and his family. Now, to help alleviate that burden, as well as raise awareness of Mr Goldsmith’s plight, a number of locals will host the 2020 Robyn Ayton Memorial Surf Contest at Jewells Beach on Saturday 5 December – with the proceeds aiding the popular sportsman. An after-party and awards
ceremony, including a surfboard auction, is scheduled to take place at the Orana Hotel, Blacksmiths, too. “For the past four years, my partner Sam Ayton and friend Jarrad Duffey have hosted the annual contest after Sam’s mom passed away from brain cancer in June 2016,” event co-organiser Marina Weitz said. “Each time, we’ve donated the money raised to an individual in need or an organisation, including Sam’s father, the Mark Hughes Foundation, and Surfing the Spectrum. “In 2020, we’re determined to assist Neil, who had a terrible accident in Indonesia. “His family needed to Medivac him back to Australia and into a special spinal ward unit, all paid

Tragically, he is paralysed from the chest down and currently going through the recovery process, emotionally and physically. “So, we’d like to lessen some of the stress if we can. “In 2019, the Robyn Ayton Memorial Surf Contest amassed about $10,000 for Surfing the Spectrum. “This year, we are hoping to
match that or raise more – and continue to see the amazing support of our community. “The family needs around $125,000 in total to cover all of the medical bills and expenses. “So, the more we raise the better.” Ms Weitz admitted it was an easy decision to hit the waves for Mr Goldsmith. “We chose Neil because he’s a local surfer in our community,

who’s been dealt a terrible hand in especially difficult times,� she said. “We know how easily this could happen to any of us and really feel for him and his family. “Also, with his accident having happened only recently, they’re far from their fundraising goals and we thought he could use, and deserves, all the love and support that can be given to him.� Mr Goldsmith’s sister Lou Webber said her sibling was still coming to terms with the enormity of his injuries and how different life and his future will be as a quadriplegic. “It’s such a heartbreaking and extremely challenging time,� she explained. “This will be a tough journey for him, but he’ll make it with all of our love and support. “It’ll take a village, but we’ll get there. Anyone who knows Neil, knows of his love for surfing. “He surfed every day. Ironically, after surfing in G-Land, he had the accident. “When Neil didn’t return, a mate went looking for him. He was found by a farmer four hours later lying in a ditch with the motorbike on top of him. He was then taken to a local hospital, where X-rays and CT scans showed he required a spinal cord specialist.� Ms Webber described the ordeal to bring her brother home. “Since Neil needed specialised medical treatment, he was transported to the international hospital in Bali (BIMC) – a gruelling six-hour ambulance ride,� she said.
“He had many surgeries, which included facial reconstruction, and stabiliser plates inserted to support his fractured neck. “He remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Bali for four weeks. “We paid the medical bills at BIMC weekly while trying to fundraise (through our GoFundMe page Neil-Needs-You) and formulate a plan to Medivac him back to Australia. “The hospital bill in Bali came to a staggering AU$83,000.� But, the family worked non-stop to ensure his safe return. “This was an excruciating task during a global pandemic,� Ms Webber said. “We could not fly to Bali to be by his side as international travel was denied. “We had language barriers at the hospital, borders closed in Australia and Bali, COVID-19 restrictions denying visitors, and the constant heartbreak of knowing how alone he was in ICU after having been through such a traumatic accident. “We spoke to our local members of parliament, to the Australian Consulate in Bali, to Department of Foreign Affairs, and as many government bodies as we could. “However, we were told we were on our own, and responsible for organising and funding his medical evacuation. Then, we were able to successfully Medivac Neil to Australia on 12 August at an additional cost of AU$106,000.� - Rod Thompson

Windale Public School celebrated its national award at a renaming ceremony for the preschool to “Nubalin”.
Windale Public School is in “party mode” after securing a prestigious national honour. The Hunter educational facility has shown it leads the way in helping children learn through play, courtesy of an award-winning outdoor learning area. Principal Cindy Sadler expressed her delight in winning the Kidsafe National Playsafe Design Award for 2020. Its stimulating environment has incorporated natural materials

Removing the red zone: Five years of fighting It’s been a long, tortuous battle spanning five years and Lindsay Clout is still fighting for his community. As president of the Coalition Against PFAS, the Fullerton Cove resident wants the ‘red zone,’ which is the area contaminated by firefighting foam historically used at the Williamtown RAAF base, reexamined and classified to provide freedom to residents who are no longer in danger. “There are many residents who have had multiple negative PFAS water tests on their properties, taken by Defence, and these people are asking why they are still inside a red line and the associated restrictions,” Mr Clout said. “These same people are unable to borrow against their properties.” The problem is, he’s not sure who he’s fighting against.
“We are at the point now of returning the focus back to Defence and the government to get this place cleaned up,” Mr Clout said. “I have written to the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and the State Environment Minister, Matt Kean, asking for the red zone to be reduced in size. “I spoke to the EPA and it said it’s not its job, it’s Defence’s – I wrote to Defence and asked and it said it was the EPA’s job, so I’m going around in circles at the moment. “I’m trying to get some light shone onto this clean-up and getting some people away from the lockdown we have been in over the past five years.” In a letter to Mr Clout, Stephen Beaman, Executive Director Regulatory Operations of the EPA, stated that the map was updated in 2017, and that: “The EPA requested
the Department of Defence to implement a long-term ongoing monitoring plan as part of [its] PFAS Management Area Plan.” Port Stephens MP Kate Washington has also written to the minister, criticising the EPA’s response that the boundaries of the map will be adjusted ‘if PFAS concentrations decrease over time.’ “The lines were drawn and redrawn by the EPA and, five years on, people are still experiencing the economic, environmental and social consequences of living within the lines,” she said. “Given that there hasn’t been any adjustment to the maps for five years, residents are left to assume that PFAS concentrations have not decreased over five years, despite the extensive work being undertaken by Defence. “If there has been a decrease in
concentration and a reduction of the area impacted, then surely that would warrant an adjustment of the EPA’s maps.” The Department of Defence wrote to Mr Clout saying: “It is a matter for the NSW EPA”. It came as a parliamentary inquiry into PFAS remediation in and around Defence bases took place in Canberra earlier this week. It heard from key scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia’s national science agency, about its latest environmental research. “One of the things we will want to know is to what extent Defence has adopted CSIRO recommendations,” Chair of the PFAS Sub-committee of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Senator, Dr Sam McMahon, said. - Emma Murphy

news Jetty plan will boost tourism, says Tomaree group
Peter Clough believes a ferry and cruise service to the Tomaree Headland will effectively showcase the region’s spectacular waterways. As president of the Tomaree Headland Heritage Group, Mr Clough is urging the community to join him in supporting the introduction of public transport to access what he says has the potential to be a nationally significant visitor attraction.
Citing concerns with current visitor parking, traffic management and coach access, Mr Clough says arriving to the area via its waterways is a logical solution. “We believe there is a strong case for the reinstatement of the jetty, with a pontoon, previously sited on the Tomaree Headland foreshore,” he said. “Approximately 200,000 plus people visit the Tomaree Headland every year. “Ferry and cruise services to the headland has the potential to provide a significant new tourism product for Port Stephens, particularly if a more extensive service is offered to link the various existing jetty facilities at Nelson Bay, Bannisters, Soldiers Point Marina, and even Lemon Tree.” In 2018, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) was
awarded $6.7 million from the NSW Government to create a worldclass coastal walk and supporting facilities in the Tomaree National Park. The funding will extend the 20-kilometre walk from Tomaree Headland to Birubi Point. The improvements are expected to be completed by 2022, with tourism bodies hoping it will boost the regional visitor economy, cementing its reputation as a naturebased walking destination. “As a group our focus is at the headland, where the walk starts,” Mr Clough said. “We believe the reinstatement of the jetty on the Tomaree Headland foreshore should be particularly embraced in the Tomaree Coastal Walk Master Plan as a public transport option. “We are totally supportive of the proposed Tomaree Coastal Walk
and note their master plan includes a section of their walkway, which will connect with the original jetty site.” Mr Clough believes existing infrastructure and community consultation hinted at the success of the redevelopment. “There was a jetty there,” Mr Clough said. “It was pulled down somewhere, we believe, between 2007 and 2014. “My understanding is that it was dilapidated and cost too much to maintain. “It’s already there though, right on the Tomaree Lodge foreshore, and we know the water is deep enough because it’s been used as a jetty before, so let’s upgrade it.” The reconstruction, Mr Clough estimates, would cost approximately $500,000 but came with unlimited potential. - Rebecca Riddle

cover story Golfers teeing off to raise funds for cancer research It’s a challenge that will test the skill, strength and stamina of even the most hardened golfer from dawn to dusk. Cancer Council has teed up The Longest Day fundraiser in a bid to reduce the impact of cancer in Australia. Golfers are being driven to complete the par-fect challenge – four consecutive rounds, or 72 holes, in one day. Funds raised will enable the Cancer Council to conduct lifesaving research, deliver prevention campaigns, and support people as they navigate through their cancer journey. Cancer Council NSW’s Hunter Central Coast Community Relations Coordinator, Gemma Pedri, says The Longest Day has gone from
strength-to-strength since the inaugural event in 2017. “This year, there are nearly 2,000 golfers from across NSW taking on the challenge and raising funds to help people impacted by cancer,” she says. “With their support, we hope to raise $700,000. “COVID-19 has impacted many things but, fortunately, golf clubs have remained open here in NSW, and the sport continues to grow in popularity. “[So], we look forward to more and more people taking on the ultimate golf challenge in the years to come.” Australia has the highest rates of melanoma in the world, with more than 15,000 people expected to be diagnosed this year.

Two in three Australians will be diagnosed by the age of 70 and men over 40 are twice as likely to die from melanoma than women. The Longest Day challenge will officially take place on Monday 14 December, but clubs across the state are hosting golfers on any other day throughout the month. Waratah Golf Club in Argenton has, like many others, encouraged participation by waiving fees for the challenge. General manager Jono Towns says the event aligns closely with its community values. “We couldn’t do it on the 14th

The popularity of their product was so overwhelming, with the demand pushing them to open a store, called ‘The Flossery,’ at Wallsend. “We were like ‘woah we are onto something here,’” Judith said. “We got the smallest shop locally, and we thought this way it would not be a big burden if it didn’t survive 12 months but, within two months, we were already too big for it. “I can’t even put all of my flavours on the shelf.” The recipe to their success is kept close to their chests; a special concoction only they know to make a truly unique floss. Musicians fine-tune their work It wasn’t only their instruments that needed finetuning when COVID-19 hit home. Like most others, Angamus Duo, made up of violinist Chin-Hwi Ang and pianist Greg Paterson OAM, were forced to adapt in the months that followed from their last live show on Tuesday 17 March. The pair, which had a residency at Wests New Lambton, would normally play at the popular location twice a week. Ang said it took some time for the pandemic’s impact to sink in.
“I had to come to terms with the fact that my main source of income was gone,” she said. “We’ve been this dynamic duo for the past 10 years and music, for both Greg and I, has been a huge part of our life. “We’ve had to adapt to the changes more than ever [before] during this time. “It has been one of the toughest things we’ve gone through.” To help fill the void that was left by the cancellation of their live shows, Angamus Duo turned to the virtual world to create
a new experience. Every Thursday at 3pm, the duo livestreams a concert through video conferencing app Zoom. Called Happy Hour, the virtual concerts are a way for music lovers to connect with the pair. Ang said they choose a theme each week and play through a set while asking their listeners questions. “It was quite clear that people were feeling more depressed and anxious – I can’t even imagine what it was like for people who don’t have a lot of social support, so we wanted to do something,” Ang said. “It does take a little while to get used to it, it’s just the interaction between the duo and our subscribers – it’s kind of like talk back radio. “[It’s a chance] to stay indoors and tune into something if you are feeling really vulnerable and, because we are COVIDSafe, it’s nice to know that if anything does happen, we can still continue. “We can create something just as magical as if they were here with us.” Go to angamus.com for more information or to subscribe. - Elizabeth Symington

Author pens series that began as gift Julie Keating is a Novocastrian who loves local history. The retired librarian says she savours the time spent researching her favourite topic, Newcastle in the 1800s. Ms Keating recently published Adamstown and Broadmeadow: The early days of settlement, the eighth book in the series. The book takes an in-depth look at the suburbs’ early European origins, including the origins of its name. “Adamstown was originally named Adam’s Town after Thomas Adam, who first purchased land in the area,” Ms Keating said. “Broadmeadow was a low-lying swampy area between Hamilton
and Waratah, known as Broad Meadows.” Ms Keating, whose former workplaces include University of Newcastle and TAFE NSW, says her book series began as a gift for her parents. “It started six years ago when I did some research on Lambton,” she said. “I was raised in Lambton and my parents lived there most of their lives. My research was for them.” What followed was a book about Waratah and Mayfield, written so her grandparents could also immortalise their origins. She has since written titles including Merewether and The Junction, Newcastle’s Harbour

One of her favourite fragments of Newcastle history involves the city’s iconic foreshore. “I was horrified to hear that, in
the 1850s, they were planning to blow up Nobbys,” she said. “It wasn’t a safe harbour and incoming ships had to choose between north and south when entering. “To the south was a rocky outcrop, to the north was problematic winds and water depth. “Their idea was to blow up the harbour. They had even sent the gunpowder to Newcastle to do it, but the residents protested, and it’s believed it was the first environmental protest in the country. “Can you imagine Newcastle without Nobbys?” Ms Keating’s experience in teaching has helped her to sift through fact and fiction. “It takes eight to 10 months to complete each book,” she said. “A lot of what was written isn’t accurate and a lot of people’s research isn’t accurate, so, if I can’t verify it, I don’t use it.” Memories are not considered a source when collating history, she said. “I have a childhood memory of playing on the steam engine in Lambton Park,” she said. “I thought it was huge, and then I saw it as an adult and I soon learned that memories can’t be trusted.” Julie Keating’s Newcastle in the 1800s book series is available from MacLeans Booksellers and Marketown Newsagency. - Rebecca Riddle

Treat your lawns carefully during the warmer months This last week has been a rollercoaster ride weatherwise – 40 degrees, dropping to 24 and back up into the 30s. Strong winds, very drying for the garden, but little rain meant I needed to turn the hose on my front garden this morning. It is wise to concentrate on susceptible plants during this kind of weather. Firstly, it is time to prune side shoots of tomatoes and start using fruit fly baits before tomatoes ripen. Dahlia tubers and gladiolus corms should be re-planted now. Gardenias are looking good this year – the heavy showers during early spring stopped them stressing while producing their beautiful blooms. Once they finish flowering, fertilise with cow manure – if growing in pots, use an acidic fertiliser, such as Flourish, for camellia and gardenias. Scale and sooty mould can commonly occur during summer. Treat the scale with Malathon
and White Oil and the sooty mould with copper oxychloride. Treat lawns carefully during the heat of December – don’t mow too low, watering deeply every three or four days. Keep an eye out for lawn pests. Crickets and black beetles generally arrive before the army grub. Consider applying lawn grub killer before leaving on a holiday – there is nothing worse than coming home to a brown lawn. A quick reminder: if leaving on holiday, mulch the gardens well with sugar cane and enlist the help of neighbours and families to water your gardens and lawns frequently during the heat. Group potted plants together in a shady position to make it easier for watering. Indoor plants should be grouped together in a cool spot – the bath makes an excellent position to leave a little water available for houseplants to soak up. Garden beds and pots should have been

planted eight weeks before Christmas. With only three weeks to go, the deadline is approaching; if a colourful impact is required, don’t despair – there is still time to plant out instant colour in punnets or Easy Colour packs. Obviously the most sought after are red and white, which are available in different sizes of growth in petunias. Once planted, apply a foliate fertiliser, such as Flourish, weekly to stimulate quick growth. A shady spot or a sheltered front door can be given an instant Christmas lift with colourful poinsettias already in flower. Beautiful bowls of white poinsettias are available this year, as well as brilliant red. Both provide an extensive blooming period over many months and will then re-flower again next winter.

COVID-19 has been a difficult time for us all and I know I wouldn’t have been able to survive it without Damon by my side. He’s my manager, my sound engineer for all my shows, my co-writer and co-conspirator. My world wouldn’t be the same without him in it.
My favourite thing to do on a quiet Sunday is to pop on an old vinyl record – usually Springsteen, Ella Fitzgerald or James Taylor – and cook something in my kitchen while I hum and sway along. It brings me so much joy.
