This week...

From the editor How handy are you around the house? I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a little bit useless (my dad may or may not have had to help me fix a chair leg last year, while I might have recently needed my housemate’s assistance to fix the smoke alarm). I’d like to think I’m not alone in this – although most of you will, no doubt, be far more capable than I. Given I have probably already humiliated myself, I’ll keep going and promote the interesting advice of this week’s cover star, Werine Erasmus (aka ‘The Happy Renovator’). Werine learnt much of her skills by watching YouTube videos and renovation shows. Two decades on, she has flipped more than 20 properties and is now living mortgage free. Werine shares her journey, as well as tips for aspiring renovators, in our Home section, starting on page 29. With this year unlike any other, we’ve also covered a couple of initiatives that are promoting what Newcastle and the Hunter has to offer for those wishing to enjoy a holiday in their hometown. A new drawcard is set to launch early next month, while a social media campaign will support local industry sectors hardest hit by COVID-19. news On ‘yer bike: new spin on tourism A bike ride with a friend who unlocks nuggets of information – that’s what Ben Ogden is hoping riders will feel when they saddle up for his newest tourism drawcard. The 34-year-old, who moved to Newcastle with his young family in 2019, is set to launch Newy Rides – bike tours for visitors wanting to explore the city off the beaten track – next month. After COVID lockdowns saw his international events management role experience a significant lull, the keen bike rider from Parkes honed his creative juices on promoting a city he had fallen in love with. “I already knew I loved Newcastle,” he said. “I’d grown up visiting mates who were studying here at the University of Newcastle and I knew it had a lot to offer.” Then, after years spent travelling overseas, Ben combined his passion for bikes with his knowledge of domestic tourism to create a set of routes that would showcase Newcastle’s local producers, artists, cafes, restaurants, and bars by bike. “My takeaways when I travel are always the unexpected adventures,” he said.

“Some will say ‘I went to Paris and I went to the top of the Eiffel Tower.’ “My favourite time in Paris was onboard a barge on the river watching a hip-hop show and drinking rosé all night. “That to me was more memorable than waiting in line at the Eiffel Tower.” Ben believes Newcastle is worth more than the offered cookie-cutter tours. “You can easily just come to Newy and walk along Honeysuckle, go to Nobbys, and see the coast,” he said. “Yes, that is beautiful, and visitors [should] do that anyway, but the important thing to turn us into a destination is to champion an authentic local experience. “The idea of Newy Rides is to tie some elements of Newcastle culture together. “To showcase our prolific street art scene, coffee culture and restaurants worth travelling for.” Each participant on the tour will ride a unique, recycled bike that has been restored to reflect the city’s highlights. “They’ve each had a paint job, reflecting the

sights of Newcastle,” Ben said. “From Adamstown Gates, to the Stockton Ferry, Pasha Bulker and Silverchair’s Frogstomp album cover.” Ben will host his first Newy Ride on Saturday 5 December. Spotlight on “forgotten cancer” Selwyn Robinson spent a lot of time in the sun as a young man, and now he is paying the price. The stonemason of 46 years said he knew he should protect his skin and wear sunscreen but being “young and silly” meant he did not fully

understand the consequences. Now aged 62, Selwyn has had 40 skin cancers removed and a toe amputated because of non-melanoma skin cancer. The Port Stephens resident is sharing his story during Skin Cancer

Action Week (15 to 21 November) to urge people to look after their skin. “I couldn’t be adamant enough that, with the amount of sun cancers I’ve had removed, it is much better to protect yourself rather than having the surgeries at a later date,” he said. “When I was young, sun cancer wasn’t even heard of, doctors weren’t even saying a sun cancer, they were just saying skin damage from the sun, it wasn’t even heard of back then. “I see a lot of young parents nowadays with children and think: ‘Oh gosh, if you guys only knew what I went through you would be ensuring those kids are very well sun protected.’” The avid fisherman has made several life changes, including protecting his skin, staying out of the sun where he can, and fishing at night. His most recent bout began with a visit to his GP about a lump on his face where, after the appointment, Selwyn was referred to a skin specialist.

“I went to Dr Mistry at 4D Skin Cancer & Laser Clinic in Belmont and he thought it looked like a cyst but when he removed it in the surgery he said: ‘I don’t like the look of that,’” Selwyn said. “They sent it away to have a look at it, and 10 days later, Dr Mistry said: ‘I have got bad news for you, it’s a basal cell but it is growing inwards, it’s quite concerning, so we are going to have to put you into hospital to have surgery.’ “He cut from one corner of my eye right down past my nose to another corner of my mouth. “They had a frozen section done so they could send a section of it away to get the results within the hour and, thankfully, they got it all. “But, when I got the stitches removed, Dr Mistry sent me to get radiation therapy to be safe. “He referred me to GenesisCare and they were the most wonderful people that I’ve dealt with.” Continued on page 8

From page 6 At GenesisCare, Selwyn received Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), a new, innovative technique in modern radiation therapy used in the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer. Radiation Oncologist Dr Philippa Ell said the treatment shapes the radiation beam to fit the tumour and was good for patients who have complex anatomy or lesions that are very close to structures they want to avoid. “Patients really need to be aware that there are a number of treatment options available,” she said. “When we think of skin cancer, we think of surgical removal, but there are other options available. “There are some areas, like the face, that the outcomes are poor cosmetically because they have to cut out a large part of [the area], so radiation is a good option.” Dr Ell added that prevention was vital, with about two out of every

three Newcastle residents expected to be diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer before the age of 70. “Cover your skin and, if you do go out in the sun, try to make it outside of the peak burning time and keep the periods as short as possible,” she said. “It’s very important because we live in a very outdoor culture, especially in Newcastle, given that we live by the ocean. It’s a bit of a forgotten cancer [even though] there has been generational changes around sun protection.” - Elizabeth Symington

news Tasmanian trek set to help disadvantaged children A lifechanging trek in Tasmania is set to make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children. Led by Newcastle Citizen of the Year, Michelle Faithfull, the charity trek will raise funds to help youths follow their academic, sporting or artistic dreams. “The trek will go for five days in Cradle Mountain in October 2021,” Michelle said. “It’s a medium intensity fitness level and it is all about teamwork, we don’t leave anyone behind. “From easy, shorter exploration walks to day-long hikes and a couple of steep climbs up to beautiful lookouts, everyday you’ll face a different challenge. “Cradle Mountain is one of Australia’s premier trekking destinations.

“Rocky mountain peaks, buttongrass moorlands, glacial lakes, waterfalls and dense rainforest are hallmarks of this natural haven.” In the lead-up to the trek, hikers will raise funds for Compass Housing’s Grow A Star program. Grow A Star is an initiative that helps young people living in community housing across Australia and New Zealand to achieve their goals. Her first trek, about 10 years ago, raised funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and, since then, she has been hooked.

“I got my passion for these things from that very first trek,” she said. The cost for the trek is $2,750 and there is a $3,000 fundraising requirement per participant. “We currently have four participants signed up, but we’d love to see a few more on board over the next few months as we need a minimum of eight to make it viable,” Michelle said. “I feel like I have won the lotto”: Trudi’s fresh start Trudi Wood shed tears of joy when she was handed the keys to a brand new two-bedroom home. The 38-year-old has spent much of the past 16 years living in refuges, couch surfing, and sleeping in her car. She gave up custody of her three children because she didn’t want to cart them through various refuges

all the time. Now, she will be able to share care with her ex-partner and is already planning Christmas lunch with her girls at her new home. Ms Wood said she was excited about the future. “I feel like I have won the lotto – this house will be the start of my new life,” she said.

“Now I can get my kids back… they have seen the house and are very excited.” Ms Wood added that, with a stable place to call home, she would be able to concentrate on finishing TAFE training so she could work in the fitness industry. “Fitness and boxing have been really helpful to me in turning my life around,” she said. “I [sometimes] run free fitness sessions for people in my current neighbourhood and hopefully I can do that for my new neighbours. “One day, I hope I will be able to buy my own home because of this start I have been given.” Ms Wood’s fresh start comes as part of a development that will see 65 social and affordable homes built in Thornton in a bid to reduce housing stress in the Hunter. Not-for-profit Compass Housing is delivering 493 new homes across 19 sites under the NSW Government’s Social and Affordable Housing Fund

(SAHF) program. The Thornton development is its largest project and includes a mixture of duplex and triplex dwellings, containing 49 two-bedroom, 11 onebedroom, and five three-bedroom homes to accommodate people’s different housing needs. Compass Housing spokesperson Lyndall Robertshaw said it would manage the tenancies and provide support services for residents once the finishing touches were completed. “The SAHF program is about more than just building houses – it is about creating empowered tenants and sustainable communities,” Ms Robertshaw said. “Compass has partnered with Hunter-based Mavid Group to build the homes, supporting local businesses and local jobs.” The SAHF program is a key initiative of the NSW Government’s plan to deliver more and better social housing across the state. - Ben Murphy

news Marine Rescue base opens in Swansea Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie has opened its new $1.7 million headquarters in Swansea. The volunteer organisation, which deals with an average of two to three assists every day, will now have a state-of-the-art facility befitting its reputation as the busiest marine rescue unit in NSW. The new site will provide dedicated command and control facilities for planning, managing, and coordinating extended and multi-agency search and rescue operations. The two-storey building will also incorporate training and meeting space, storage for rescue equipment, a viewing platform, and a lift to improve access for volunteers living with a disability. Lake Macquarie Unit Commander Malcolm Druce said the headquarters would allow its 150 volunteers to deal with any emergency that may arise. “It’s the culmination of 10 years of planning, research and discussion and we’re very excited about its opening,” he said. “We deal with one serious incident every week

and, by that, I mean an incident where a life is threatened. “With our new base, we will be ready for anything.” Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie services boaters on the waters from Redhead Beach to Wybung Head, and up to 30 nautical miles offshore. “There are 26,000 boat owners immediately surrounding Lake Macquarie,” Mr Druce said. “That number is aside from those who travel to this region and embark on our waters. “This is a big catchment area.” The communications centre will provide the service with a world-class emergency operations base for its work saving lives on the water. Lake Macquarie has been consistently regarded as the busiest marine rescue unit in NSW. In 2019, it launched 396 rescue missions, including 50 in response to life-threatening emergencies, and responded to 21,743 radio calls from boaters. “One of the things that we needed to take our place as a trusted establishment was having enough capacity to deal with emergency

situations,” Mr Druce said. “We needed a facility like this on our busy coastline and we now have that.” The official opening last Friday was six weeks ahead of schedule. It attracted dignitaries including NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott, Marine Area Command Alex Burrell, and Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser, as well as an array of local politicians. - Rebecca Riddle

Island’s frogs bounce back Vulnerable frog populations have bounced back at Newcastle’s Kooragang Island after being depleted by drought. The veritable frog haven comes after a successful project that aimed to improve the habitat of species like the green and golden bell frog. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Bush Regeneration and Volunteering Officer, Boyd Carney, said frogs in the area were greatly affected by low rainfall. “The idea was to enhance their habitat through plantings and weed removal and make it easier for them to move across the landscape and access the available wetland habitat across the island,� he said. “Luckily, we did get some rain, and this has greatly benefited the frog populations and improved the odds of survival. “Volunteers play a major part in

threatened species conservation, not only with their contributions to on-ground work, but also in other ways, such as reporting sightings of threatened species, which help researchers track what is happening with species over time. “They bring so much energy and passion to their work, and their efforts are much appreciated. “This work will improve terrestrial habitat long-term, support the booming population, and assist in the ongoing survival of frog species.� NPWS will continue to work with Hunter Local Land Services and Conservation Volunteers Australia to prioritise the ongoing recovery of the frogs. The site is also partly managed by the Hunter Central Coast Development Corporation, BHP, Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group and University of Newcastle.

Due to current restrictions a small group of family helped to celebrate with his old choir and two members of the RSL Sub-Branch. The celebrations included a very special performance by Milton’s choir, the Waratah Warblers. Singing has been a lifelong love for Milton who attributes his interest in music to a primary school teacher who transported his gramophone on his bicycle to school for the children to listen to music - Monday was the Horn on the handlebars and Tuesday was the rest - ready for singing on Wednesday and then he would take it all home again! The key to Milton’s longevity lies in his activity! When not participating in yoga, exercise classes or daily events he is busy keeping track of his large family.

Acclaimed surgeon, Associate Professor Kelvin Kong, has been awarded the prestigious Menzies Medallion.

“Superstar” of Indigenous health wins coveted award Australia’s first Aboriginal surgeon, the highly acclaimed ear, nose and throat surgeon, Associate Professor Kelvin Kong, has been awarded the prestigious Menzies Medallion. A Worimi man from Port Stephens, the breadth and depth of Associate Professor Kong’s work over the years is far reaching and

includes his role as chief investigator for the Menzies-led Centre for Research Excellence in Ear and Hearing Health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Associate Professor Kong was presented with the award – the highest offered by the Darwin-based Menzies School of Health Research

– last Friday in recognition of his leadership in Aboriginal health service delivery, advocacy, and research. He currently practices in Newcastle (Awabakal Country) as a surgeon, specialising in paediatric and adult otolaryngology, head and neck surgery (ear, nose and throat surgery), and lectures in allied health at the University of Newcastle. Associate Professor Kong also participates in a project group at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). Former HMRI Director, Professor Tom Walley, described Associate Professor Kong as a “superstar of Indigenous health research”, adding it was gratifying to see him receive recognition, particularly during NAIDOC Week. Earlier this year, Associate Professor Kong also received a fiveyear, $1.12 million Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) grant earlier this year to explore a telehealth ear,

nose and throat (ENT) model, based in metropolitan, rural and regional Aboriginal community controlled health services. Professor Walley said this Indigenous-led telehealth research would improve Aboriginal children’s access to specialist ENT care and reduce the waiting time for treatment during the vital years of early childhood ear and hearing health. “HMRI is providing an office in its building for the research program, named in honour of Associate Professor Kong for his tremendous contribution to Indigenous kid’s health and research,” Professor Walley said. “The space will be a public focal point by HMRI of the importance of community-led Indigenous health research.” Professor Walley added Associate Professor Kong was profiled in the prestigious international medical publication – The Lancet – last month as a trail blazer for Indigenous health.

When Drew Duggan first became involved with Movember, it was more about supporting a mate than for any personal reason. The then 30-year-old exercise physiologist, who was living in New York, was helping his friend, Kurt Fearnley, prepare for the 2014 New York Marathon when Kurt suggested the pair shave prior to the race. The trim would be the last in a month-long campaign to grow facial hair to raise funds and awareness for men’s health. “It started as a fun way to do something good,” Drew said. “Kurt was heavily involved in it and I thought we would have a laugh and grow some silly moustaches together.” Ironically, just a few years later, the annual global campaign would become personal after Drew’s stepfather was diagnosed with prostate cancer. “Now it directly impacted someone I cared about,” Drew said. “I did Movember again that year but was more aware of what it was all about.”

Then, in a strange, coincidental twist of fate, Drew received his own cancer diagnosis in January 2019. At 34-years-old, the owner of Wellfit Personal Training Broadmeadow would be forced to undergo his own cycle of chemotherapy after a small lump revealed he had testicular cancer. “I had an operation to remove the lump but it had spread into the lymph nodes in my stomach,” he said. “I had to start treatment the next week.” Drew spent the following three months undergoing chemotherapy at the Calvary Mater Newcastle, five days a week for four hours at a time. Despite being at peak fitness, the selfconfessed country boy admits he was broken, both physically and mentally. “Each round of treatment got progressively harder,” he said. “The first couple of rounds were okay but I soon had no energy, I felt sick and the brain fog was the worst bit. “I couldn’t read a book or watch TV – I had no

guru’s feeling the itch idea that was going to happen to me.” Having worked for more than 15 years in the fitness industry, Drew was now unable to enjoy the simplest of workouts. “It was such a big drop from feeling great to feeling terrible,” he said. “It was a massive change but I didn’t have a choice in it so I just had to accept it. “That’s the thing with cancer, you can’t change the fact you have it when you’re first diagnosed, and you can’t just leave it.” After five years of growing a moustache during the second-last month of the year, Drew says he has learned that, like cancer treatment, there is small pain for large gain. “It’s a small price to pay for a good cause,” he said. “Once the moustache grows down and touches your lips it’s annoying that’s for sure. “The second half of the month isn’t as much fun as the first.” After a few weeks of growing, Newcastle’s face of Movember admits he is starting to feel the itch.

Now in its 17th year, the annual Mo-growing campaign encourages ‘Mo Bros’ and ‘Mo Sisters’ across the country to come together in support of Movember’s cause areas. “The reason I liked Movember was because Kurt had shown me the stats about how much actually gets to where it’s supposed to go,” Drew said. “[With] some charities, you might donate $100 and $10 of it gets to where it needs to go, [but] Movember is up over 70%, which is massive considering how much effort they put into growing it as well. “Not only does it focus on areas that directly affect me and people I love but money is going where it should be.” Funds raised during Movember go to research and funding into prostate cancer, testicular cancer, men’s mental health, and suicide prevention. “This year, the way it has played out with COVID, there’s been a lot more stress on men mentally,” Drew said. “Both job wise and isolation. where men might normally speak to each other were closed, like pubs and gyms. “There were so many factors exacerbating men’s mental health issues this year. “I got involved more because of the cancer link but, this year, I’m so proud of the way Movember has tackled men’s mental health issues as well.” - Rebecca Riddle

sport Harry’s keen to impress in hometown Test A clash between the Wallabies and Argentina in Newcastle this weekend may present a special opportunity for one of the region’s homegrown stars. Australian prop-forward Harry Johnson-Holmes grew up in Newcastle, attending Merewether High School and playing for the Newcastle Wanderers as a junior. Now playing professionally for the NSW Waratahs, the 23-year-old expressed his excitement at men’s Test rugby coming to the Hunter for the first time since 2012. “I’ve obviously [played] a couple of games now through the Waratahs in Newcastle and that in itself was really special and something I really treasured,” he said. “The opportunity to do so at [the] international stage and represent my country in front of my hometown and friends and family will be a dream come true.

“Regardless of whether or not I’m playing, it’s really good that Newcastle’s getting the recognition it deserves around what it can provide as a world-class town with worldclass facilities, with one of the best rugby communities in the country. “I think it’s really cool that they’re getting that recognition and reaping the benefits of these big fixtures coming to inspire the younger generation and keep rugby strong in Newcastle.” Johnson-Holmes made his Test debut for the Wallabies in 2019 against South Africa at Ellis Park after a late call-up. “I think I got there on a Thursday and played on Saturday, which is pretty hard to deal with, jet lag, adjusting to altitude and learning line out plays,” he said. “It gave me a good taste for what Test footy is like and gave me a good

headspace that I could perform on an international stage.” Johnson-Holmes is also a keen musician, playing across Newcastle in his younger days with his band Geography of Mars, or “the second coming of Silverchair” as he called it. He said that he’s not the only one who’s musically minded amongst the Wallabies squad. “Funnily enough, Dave Rennie, the coach of the Wallabies, is pretty reasonable on the guitar, and he’s made the team pretty musical,” he said. “[Winger] Filipo Daugunu is pretty handy on the strings as well – I’d be interested to see what our genre would be. “It’s cool to be able to mix with a few blokes who’ve got a musical background.” Apart from Johnson-Holmes, Scone-born product Nic White is

Proof's in the pudding when it comes to church's charity This year’s Christmas pudding may look a little different, but then this year has been a year like no other, says Adamstown Pudding Kitchen’s Dianne Richter. After COVID restrictions meant closing its doors to its regular 30 to 40 volunteers, Adamstown Uniting Church, or “Pudding Church” as it is affectionately known, was forced to adapt. The church that doubles as a kitchen selling award-winning puddings was unable to produce its usual 10,000 kilograms of puddings this year. Instead they have been selling last year’s puddings, jams and pickles, sauces and new pudding chocolates in a bid to maintain its annual

fundraising efforts. Church office administrator Dianne Richter says the products will still live up to the group’s reputation. “The puddings are made to the traditional recipe, they are all homemade, and they are still very moist,” she said. “This year, if anything, the flavor is better because it has had a chance to mature.” Despite 2020’s many changes, Ms Richter says the secret to the success of Adamstown Pudding Kitchen is still the same. “It’s what people have grown up with,” she said. “It’s about community. It’s everyone working together [and] volunteering their time to produce

home-made puddings that are made with a lot of love. “What you can taste in the puddings is the love that’s gone into them.” Ms Richter, who has been working at the church for nine years, says the group’s origins lie in an act of gratefulness. “It began in 1971 when one of the church parishioners, Dawn Hodges, was so happy that her brother had returned safely from the Vietnam War that she baked some puddings for the church to sell to raise some much-

needed funds,” she said. After 49 years, proceeds from the sale of the puddings now support both local and international ventures. “We’ve supported a range of projects,” Ms Richter said. “From a church arts program supporting upcoming local musicians, to a safe space for Indigenous teens in regional areas to clean water projects overseas.” Adamstown Pudding Kitchen is open from 10am to 2pm, Monday to Saturday until sold out. - Rebecca Riddle

“Eventful two decades” captured in new book A little girl catching raindrops in King Street, the Pasha Bulker, COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement are moments in history that have been captured by a new book. Newcastle duo Greg and Sylvia Ray launched Newcastle by itself this month after curating the collection of photos for most of the year. Greg says the book depicts Newcastle and the Hunter Region’s growth over the last 20 years. “So, the idea was to tell the story of change in Newcastle and surrounds,” he says. “Even I wasn’t aware of a lot of the changes until I started curating the book – it’s been such an eventful two decades.” Some of the noticeable changes include the demolition of Queens Wharf Tower, the installation of the light rail, and the conversion of the

Roundhouse into a motel. The pair are hopeful the book will help preserve some of the region’s history. Sylvia often wonders how digital images will survive in the future because they have no physical negative as a backup. “The book is a way of preserving photos from a period of time in Newcastle,” Greg says. Earlier this year, the pair called on the community to submit photos to be featured. The result of this call out was over 50 contributors being showcased within the 192-page book. Each photograph presents its own glimpse of the people and places of Newcastle. “We have included photos of the Pasha Bulker and the recent bushfires, right down to the Black

at an exhibition called Stillness, which is open at Finite Gallery in Caves Beach until Sunday 29 November. Finite Gallery founder Leslie Duffin says the artists have been working under the tutorship of John Morris, who has more than 20 years’ teaching experience at Newcastle Art School.

Three students from Minmi Public School have been lucky enough to feature in an online exhibition after they submitted artworks to a statewide challenge. Year 5 student Lily Dollin and Year 6 students Lachlan Reed and Giselle Percy were three of 56 chosen for the Schools Reconciliation Challenge. The initiative from Reconciliation NSW encourages students in Year 3 to 10 to submit artwork or pieces of writing inspired by this year’s theme, Caring for Country. Their works reflected what reconciliation means to them. “We thought it was an important opportunity to raise our students’ awareness of what reconciliation is, in addition to being able to express what reconciliation means to each of them personally,” Minmi Public School Principal, Alison Fittler, said. The challenge welcomed more than 600 entries this year.

A home renovator’s dream

Newcastle’s Werine Erasmus is a professional renovator, but it hasn’t always been that way. When she first started out, she was like most of us – a little bit clueless – and relied on YouTube videos to teach her a thing or two. Werine says she watched all the renovation shows and they inspired her to see if she could do it. Twenty years on, she has flipped more than 20 properties and is now living mortgage free.

“I’m [a] house flipper – I renovate, make it all nice and then I sell again, but I also help other people from time to time just to plan their renovations,” she says. “I wanted to be mortgage free ASAP, so, with flipping homes, it gave me a creative outlet but also gave me the opportunity to add value to a home and then sell at a higher price.” One of Werine’s favourite rooms to renovate is the kitchen because it’s

Werine says it has been a good two years in the making and that the book is a one-stop shop for beginners. “People are giving me feedback saying things like: ‘I was going to invest thousands of dollars into a course, but it is all in your book,’” she says. “So, you don’t have to necessarily go to reno school somewhere if you get the book – it will be a very good

basis of where to start.” The passionate renovator believes if she can do it, anyone can. “I’m just your average Australian girl next door – I didn’t get any training, I just had a goal and YouTube and gave it a go,” she says. “I really think anyone can do it, as long as you can stick to a budget.” Werine says two of the most important steps are research and choosing a property that will suit you. Agent confident Longworth House sale imminent The sale of Newcastle’s Longworth House is causing quite a stir amongst local history buffs. Built in 1892, the baroque-style building located on Scott Street is expected to fetch up to $3 million, despite some Novocastrians claiming it is priceless. The building is the work of Germanborn architect Frederick Menkens. During its 128-year heritage, it has been known as Wood’s Chambers, The Air Force Club, Longworth Institute, and Longworth House. Its most recent role has been as a function centre, hosting weddings and other special occasions for thousands of Novocastrians. Renowned for its Anglo-Dutch façade of red-pressed brick, carved sandstone features and oriel windows, the building took six months to build and was described by local media at the time as “one of the most modern and

advanced buildings in the colony”. Commercial Collective real estate agent Adam Leacy says Longworth House has been for sale since February 2020. “Enquiry was low for some time but, in recent weeks, we have seen a great deal of interest from buyers, two Sydney-based hospitality groups and one local,” he said. “It’s an amazing place and it’s walkin ready, so I’m confident it will be sold soon.” Local history enthusiast, former radio host, City of Newcastle councillor and founder of Facebook page Lost Newcastle, Carol Duncan, says rumours the building is in disrepair are profoundly incorrect. “The building is not going to be demolished,” she said. “Indeed, I met with a prospective purchaser [the other] week who was visiting Newcastle just to see it.

Danish-born Charlotte Thaarup is a passionate educator and coach on all things mindful. She helps thousands of people from the Hunter, around Australia and internationally, to use the practice of mindfulness to improve their mental wellbeing, to treat their body kindly and enjoy better health. Charlotte lived in Botswana for a few years as a child and came to Australia through a Rotary Exchange at 18. She lived in various parts of Australia and in London for three years but now calls Newcastle home. She says that her life experience is what contributes to being a good facilitator and coach. “When you live with someone close to you being chronically ill, when your parents split up, when you have had an eating disorder, when you have been unemployed and not sure how to pay the bills, when you have been a defence spouse and moved and restarted every two years, and when you are an immigrant without family and life-long friends around – you learn a thing or two.”

FAMILY Connecting with family and friends. My parents, siblings and extended family all still live in Denmark. Most years it means a trip back to spend time and they are delicious times filled with rich conversation, much walking, sightseeing, good food and nature. And a bit of shopping.
