This week... From the editor It’s that time of year again when blokes are popping up all over the place with freshly-grown moustaches – some are impressive, others terrible. I am one of those unfortunate souls who can spend months struggling to grow a furry, luscious moustache. Regardless of whether it’s thick or patchy, growing facial hair on your upper lip is a great way to promote men’s health. Movember Australia launched its 17th campaign on Sunday, with men and women challenged to either sign up as a Mo Bro and grow a moustache (a “mo”) or show support as a Mo Sista. You would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t been affected in some way by the global pandemic, and many males have felt the impact of a severe reduction in their usual social support networks, such as going out for a beer, watching or playing sport, or heading to the gym. Flick to page 40 to find out how you can help the current campaign. This week’s cover stars – Mikayla Atkins, Helena Richardson, and Tiffany Boddey – are spreading the word about a connection with nature, particularly the ocean, that is empowering for women of all ages. news Rising up for crucial rescue service After a devastating accident in 2017, Newcastle’s Aimee Fisher took an emergency flight with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Aimee had a fall at gymnastics in Thornton and needed to be transferred to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital. The fall left her paralysed from the hips down. Three years on, the para-athlete is now giving back to the service that gave her so much. As an ambassador for Westpac’s Rise For Rescue, Aimee encourages everyone to show support during the month-long challenge. Rise For Rescue calls on the community to raise funds and awareness while participating in a minimum of 30 minutes of activity each day at sunrise (or when they rise up). Through her team, Aimee is hoping to raise enough funds to match what it would have cost to fly her to Sydney. “They played such a significant role in helping to get the best possible outcome for me,” she says. “I want to see them continue to be able to help people, you never hope that anyone needs them,

but it means so much to have them there in the instance that you do.” Unsure of what the exact figure would be, she knows that every donation counts. “Every dollar that people give is going to the same place to do incredible things,” she says. “That’s the most important bit – trying to raise money to allow them to continue what they do.” Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Chief Executive, Richard Jones OAM, believed the Rise For Rescue challenge, which launched on Sunday, could provide a positive impact for everyone involved. “Our service is changing lives in our community every day and we are asking participants to change their own lives each day in November by taking on the Rise For Rescue challenge,” he said. “Just as our service is here for everyone, this event is for everyone of any age, every ability, anywhere – run, walk, ride a bike, horse or tractor, swim, surf or paddle, flow through yoga, Pilates or meditation, skate or scoot, we’d like to see all these and more across November.”

Environmental activist Chantal Parslow Redman believes “rocks won over koalas” after last week’s controversial approval of the Brandy Hill Quarry Expansion project. Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley announced the approval last Tuesday afternoon. Despite attaching new conditions to the project, her decision was still a massive blow to local group Save

Ms Redman, the group’s cofounder, described Minister Ley’s decision as “heartbreaking”. “It’s not at all what I expected, so we’re going to regroup and try to do whatever we can, given there
has been so much interest in our campaign,” she said. Ms Redman added that she was concerned by a statement Minister Ley made when justifying her decision. “The information they picked was wrong,” she said. “The habitat was not burnt but that is a big reason why it should be protected. We don’t have the luxury of time to protect these koalas, it’s not a win, it’s an absolute loss. “I’m just really concerned because we have had 300 sightings of koalas within 10 kilometres of the quarry – this habitat is important for the koala population.” Minister Ley stated that the expansion, to be staged over the next 25 years, will not “rob the area of critical koala habitat”. “I recognise that the proposal has been subject to a high-profile public
campaign that has tapped into the genuine concerns we all share about koalas and bushfire impacted areas,” she said. “In respecting that concern, I have delayed this decision to ensure a thorough review of all previous reports and ensured the department commissioned and funded its own independent report.” The report, commissioned by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, determined that as few as one or two koalas were present in the area and that construction could be managed without impacting the small pockets on the south western edge of the wider site. “At the end of the day, rocks won over koalas,” Ms Redman said. “It’s devastating. Female firefighting program hoses down stereotypes They can handle the heat just as much as their male counterparts, and a program coming to Newcastle is giving girls the tools to pursue a career in firefighting. It all started when Bronnie Mackintosh was handed a Churchill Fellowship research grant to recruit more women into NSW Fire and Rescue. She travelled to the USA and Canada, where she was introduced to camps that have been successful in increasing female numbers in the emergency services. “Overseas everyone had the same struggle – girls not conditioned to think it’s a job for them and turning away from male-dominated sectors like mining and STEM areas,” Ms Mackintosh said. “There was a push to see this as a viable option for girls and to break
down barriers of stereotypes.” Once she returned home, Ms Mackintosh was instrumental in uniting Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Rural Fire Service, the State Emergency Service, Airservices Australia, and NSW Parks and Wildlife to create ‘Girls on Fire.’ The program teaches young women firefighting and emergency service skills, increasing their confidence and resilience and introducing them to the possibility of a career or volunteering. The inaugural, seven-day Girls Fire and Emergency Services Camp was held at Yarramundi in the Hawkesbury Valley in 2018. This year’s camp was cancelled, initially due to bushfires and then because of COVID-19. However, a program called ‘Virtually Possible’

is now being run across the state. It combines online learning with virtual workshops and a one-day fire operations practical session, which will take place in Newcastle tomorrow (Friday 6 November). “The girls will be extinguishing a car fire simulated using a gas prop, [complete] some of the fitness-related activities, and bring together all of their skills in a scenario that mirrors what we do,” Ms Mackintosh said. The inclusion rate of females in Fire and Rescue NSW has jumped
from 3% to 8%. “More women are doing it because of awareness and publicity, but the role has also changed, there’s better fire protection and buildings are constructed better,” Ms Mackintosh added. “We have good equipment and training and attend car accidents and animal rescues. Independent City of Newcastle councillor Kath Elliott is seeking legal advice after an email calling her a “liar” was distributed to the media last week by Newcastle Labor councillors. Newcastle Weekly received the email, which
stated that two independent investigators had recommended Cr Elliott be officially censured for breaches to the Office of Local Government’s mandatory Code of Conduct. The matter related to Cr Elliott revealing information on City of Newcastle’s lease of office space on Stewart Avenue in a television news interview in October 2019. Labor councillors say, at the time, the landlord was still securing other tenants, and the release of commercial information had the potential to impact their position and create significant legal risk for City of Newcastle. The investigator found that Cr Elliott had “quoted a figure higher than the actual amount,” knowing that it “had the potential to cause harm to council’s reputation and mislead the constituency”. Councillor Matt Byrne, acting on behalf of Newcastle Labor councillors, said in a statement to the media, that “in short, the independent investigation found Cr Elliott to be a leaker and a liar”. “This incident shows that Cr Elliott cannot be

trusted by the people of Newcastle,” he said. “Cr Elliott can’t be trusted by journalists because she makes up figures as she goes in order to score cheap political points. “It is disappointing that council is in this position, however, the advice of the independent investigator was that a censure is the only mechanism available to address Cr Elliott’s continued poor conduct. “Newcastle deserves councillors that are willing to debate complicated matters based on fact, not those that pander to conspiracy theorists with their own set of incorrect, exaggerated and misleading statistics.” However, when contacted by Newcastle Weekly, Cr Elliott said she stood by the figure. “In saying about $3 million a year for the lease and clarifying this was an approximate figure in my [TV] interview, I was recalling the figure in the lease document, which is recorded as exactly $2,809,972,” she said. “With CPI [Consumer Price Index] over 15 years, my figure of $3 million was not a lie.” Cr Elliott said she strongly believed the

public had a right to know where its money was being spent, and that the new rented premises was now the biggest liability on council’s books. “Why, once the lease was signed, did it need to be kept a secret?” she said. “It’s public money. Labor says it supports open and transparent governance, but hiding the figures on this enormous expense to ratepayers is not open and transparent. “It wasn’t until I argued for the people’s right to know that Labor subsequently released figures, which were lower than what was in the lease. “I presume they had deducted a sublease, which, at the time I was interviewed, was unconfirmed and I believe is still vacant.” Cr Elliott said she believed
Lake Macquarie’s popular Fernleigh Track and Tramway Track will both feature sensors to shed light on how often the paths are used. It’s hoped the new technology will offer further insights into how and where Lake Macquarie City Council should invest further resources, according to community frequency. The sensors have found a home at the halfway point on Fernleigh Track, in Whitebridge, and near the Glendale TAFE, on the Tramway Track. The 24/7 technology will count path users around the clock, automatically sending the data across to the council twice each day. Prior to installing these sensors, the only user data available for Fernleigh Track was a biannual count. This was done manually and

Free skin checks hope to change worrying trend When was the last time you had your skin checked? It’s a question many of us can’t answer confidently, and the Hunter Melanoma Foundation is working to increase the number of people looking out for their skin, by bringing doctors to the beach. This Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November, professionals from Newcastle Skin Check will be at Cooks Hill Surf Club to provide free checks thanks to support from Novartis and The Wests Group. “We have spent 30 years in the community educating people about the importance of early detection but as a nation we are apathetic and, in our busy lives, we don’t take the time to get our skin checked,” Hunter Melanoma Foundation Executive Officer, Claudia Tolhurst, said. “We decided if we could get the funding to bring the skin check to the people it would change their behaviour for the future.” Five weekends have been chosen
for the free checks, including this weekend, followed by one in December, January, and February. The Sunday sessions have been designated for the surf life-saving community, starting with Cooks Hill, then Newcastle, Nobbys, Dixon Park, and Merewether. “You will come up and get a code, enter your details and receive a time slot to return for your check,” Ms Tolhurst said. “We don’t want people hanging around waiting in line, it’s all COVID Safe. “Most people will be there in swimmers, so it’s never been easier. “We are hoping to change people’s perception and show it’s a really easy process, but important and something we need to do professionally once a year.” Information packs about melanoma and skin safety will also be on offer, along with tips on how to apply sunscreen. Teen fined, five arrested after Halloween party A teenage girl has been issued with a Police Infringement Notice (PIN) after police were called to a Halloween party in Lake Macquarie at the weekend. Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District arrived at a home on Lake Road, Glendale, at about 6.45pm on Friday 30 October following reports of a large party. On arrival, they found more than 100 people in the backyard. Upon seeing the police, some of the partygoers knocked down a fence and ran into adjoining streets and a nearby shopping centre, where multiple fights broke out. Police intervened and broke up several fights and arrested four teenagers and a 20-year-old man.
The man was taken to Belmont Police Station, where he was issued with two Criminal Infringement Notices (CINs) for offensive language and offensive behaviour. Police returned to the Lake Road address and issued the 17-year-old female occupant with a $1,000 PIN for breaching the COVID-19 Public Health Order. During the arrests, three police officers sustained minor injuries, with one needing medical treatment. Several police vehicles were also damaged after being kicked and having projectiles thrown at them. Anyone with information about people breaching the COVID-19 Public Health Order is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Touch down: Brisbane flights arrive in Newcastle after border reopens It’s been a long wait, but Newcastle welcomed its first visitors from Brisbane this week following the opening of the state border. A Qantas flight touched down at Newcastle Airport at midday on Tuesday, providing a special opportunity for family and friends to reunite. Newcastle Airport Chief Executive Peter Cock said the airport was the largest in the state without COVID-19 travel restrictions and, as a result, airlines were ramping up their offerings as demand quickly builds. “We know our region loves to fly,” he said. “Recent polling has told us people from our region were twice as likely to be actively planning their next holiday as the Australian average. “As Northern NSW’s primary gateway to Queensland, we are seeing passenger demand driving an increase in flight frequency. “This also includes many Queenslanders coming to enjoy what our region has to offer and reunite with family and friends. “We are working closely with all our airline
partners to help connect [us] with Queensland and ensure we help meet the needs of our community. “There’s certainly a feeling of enthusiasm in the air as our operation teams, flight and ground crews, security, hospitality and retail staff prepare to welcome passengers through the terminal.” Dr Cock also said that passengers would be treated to the airport’s $1.5 million terminal upgrade. “It uses thoughtful design to offer dedicated spaces for our business, solo, and family travellers,” he said. “This will make waiting for flights more comfortable and enjoyable.” If you’re looking to head north, there are plenty of options. news Researchers recognised for improving children’s lives Newcastle-based researchers have been recognised at a virtual ceremony for helping to make a difference to the lives of children and their families. Doctors Matt Dun, Sally Fitzpatrick, Narelle Eather, and Felicity Park all took out awards at the Hunter Children’s Research Foundation (HCRF)’s Community Acknowledgement of Research Excellence event last week. Dr Dun was awarded the JSA Group Achievement in Research Award, while Dr Fitzpatrick received the Newcastle Permanent Research Mentorship Award. Dr Dun, a researcher from the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), wanted to thank all those who have supported him.
“Thank you to the community of volunteers who tirelessly campaign and fundraise to provide research teams like mine with the support necessary to do our best to improve the outcomes of children with the greatest health needs,” he said. Dr Dun, who is dedicated to improving the outlook for children living with brain cancer, works with clinical and pharmaceutical industry partners to design tailored therapies. His dedication to the cause is a very personal quest for him and his family after he lost his four-year-old daughter Josephine to brain cancer in December last year. On top of the award, Dr Dun and Dr Bronwyn Berthon were each given a $30,000 grant to support their research projects.

Surfs up to soothe the soul Helena Richardson knew it was time to offer something different when she heard women say they no longer wanted to just be in charge of sunscreen, snacks, and sandcastles at the beach. Her idea of women-only surf and yoga classes led to a wave of interest from the community. “Women want something for themselves, not just for the family,� Helena said. Through her business, Women Soulful Surf, Helena promises women of all ages a connection with nature – particularly the ocean – that is empowering. Having surfed her first wave in 2015, the yoga teacher from Poland moved to Caves Beach after she met and married her Novocastrian husband in Bali. When her first child was born the following year, Helena said she longed to return to her favourite ocean activity and began seeking out other like-minded women. “I knew there were plenty of people in the water surfing, but I hadn’t seen many women out there,� Helena said. “Through my yoga practice, I had heard from lots of women that they would like to try but, because they didn’t learn as a child, they were now too intimidated to start. “I wanted to show them that it was possible.� Helena joined forces with surf instructors Mikayla Atkins and Tiffany Boddey to bring women’s surfing and yoga classes
to Newcastle, launching Women Soulful Surf in August. “Both surfing and yoga help us connect to our bodies, and build strength and resilience,� Helena said. “It impacts in a positive way not only our bodies but also our minds. “We’ve already run three very successful surf and yoga events, a beginner’s group class, and numerous private surf classes. “Seeing all the ladies stepping out of their comfort zone, trying something new or just taking some much-needed time for themselves – and what is most important, having lots of fun while doing it – makes it so rewarding.� Women Soulful Surf is an ASI accredited surf school that welcomes women and girls from eight years of age. The group hosts one-hour lessons on the first Saturday of each month at either Blacksmiths or Caves Beach, depending on surf conditions. “This is not just for mothers,� Helena said. “We want women of all ages to experience the joy that comes from spending time in the water.� The group’s mission is to create a community of like-minded women who can feel supported and empowered while learning to surf or practice yoga. news Decades of dedication to disadvantaged children A Hunter-based club has spent more than five decades helping disadvantaged children. Full of passionate women, the Hunter VIEW Club assists as many students as it can by raising money for The Smith Family. The group is one of hundreds of clubs across Australia to celebrate 60 years as an organisation. VIEW, which stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women, has had a profound impact on its members in the Hunter. Hunter VIEW Club Publicity Officer, Elaine Amos, says it helps her feel like she is supporting her region. “I’ve been a member for three or four years and I have made friends and feel like I am contributing to the
community,” she says. “We raise money for The Smith Family to help sponsor school students. “We donate money to them so they can go on excursions and do things they wouldn’t normally be able to do. “We help kids who do not have much at all.” Program Officer and Former Secretary, Christine Atkins, adds the club sponsors six students through its partnership with The Smith Family. “We’re quite pleased we can sponsor that many kids,” she says. “One is in university, one is doing the HSC, four are in secondary school, and one is in primary school.”

Meat-free feast in store MasterChef’s Steph De Sousa is set to show off her culinary skills later this month at the third annual Feast For the Senses event. The exclusive over-18s evening on Saturday 28 November will be hosted in the newly revamped Rathmines Theatre and will
feature a three-course meal, live entertainment, and organic wines by Tamburlaine Wines. The menu, designed and cooked by De Sousa, will be meat-free and showcase delicious, seasonal ingredients which have been sustainably farmed and locally
sourced to keep with the event’s core themes. “I’m really excited to show guests that you don’t need meat to create an amazing menu,” De Sousa said. Feast For the Senses is a part of Lake Macquarie City Council’s annual Living Smart Festival. While this year’s festival switched to an online program because of COVID-19, the council’s Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism, Jacqui Hemsley, said health guidelines meant it was still possible to host this event. “We’ve moved from Speers Point Park to Rathmines Theatre to ensure a COVID Safe evening,” Hemsley said. “Current health guidelines stipulate a maximum of 30 people for outdoor events like this, whereas shifting it indoors with a comprehensive COVID-19 plan means we can accommodate more people.” De Sousa is also the face of the Meat Free Challenge – a month-long initiative challenging families to eat less meat to improve health and help the environment.
“The aim isn’t necessarily to make vegetarians out of meat-eaters – it’s to tip the scales just a little bit away from having meat on your plate every night of the week,” she said. Tickets for this year’s event are $65 per person, and include the three-course meal, a drink on arrival, and live entertainment. To maintain COVID Safe measures, seats and tables will be allocated based on ticket transactions, so groups are encouraged to buy tickets all at once to ensure they’re seated together. Hemsley added the event was expected to return to Speers Point Park in 2021. “This has been a challenging year for everyone, but we’re looking forward to hosting a fun and memorable evening in Rathmines,” she said. Laughs guaranteed at comedy festival There hasn’t been much to laugh about this year, but the Newcastle Comedy Festival is planning to do its best to elicit a chuckle. Managing Director Andrew Milos admits it’s been a nightmare trying to organise the festival, with six Victorian acts having to withdraw from the line up due to border restrictions. “It’s been a very long year, everyone’s got a story, but the entertainment industry has been hit worse than everyone else,” Milos said. “We waited until the last minute because we wanted to see what would happen with border controls, so it’s been an absolute mission.” The festival, which will be held over the weekend of 21 and 22 November across four shows, will now feature comedians from NSW. The Saturday shows will be MC’d by all-round funnyman Rove McManus and will feature Andy Saunders, who many might recognise from The Block. He brings his new solo show to Newcastle following five-star reviews and sold out shows nationally, as well as international tours with
the Aboriginal Comedy Allstars in Edinburgh and London. Becky Lucas will feature in all four shows, as will lauded jokester Randy Feltface. Nominated for best comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Randy went on to complete a season at the Soho Theatre in London, appeared at Montreal Just For Laughs Festival and had an Off-Broadway season at the Clurman Theatre in New York City. The remainder of the line-up reads like a who’s who of “ones to watch” in Australian comedy, including Nikki Britton, Gen Fricker, Sam Taunton, Sarah Gaul, Cameron Duggan, Alex Jae, and Elliott Stewart. There will also be a touch of home, with the Sunday shows to be MC’d by Newcastle’s Cameron James. “The line-up is the best you will see in Australia right now,” Milos said. “It’s the only operational comedy festival – I can see why people haven’t tried to run one. “Ninety per cent of these comics didn’t get to perform in Melbourne, Sydney or Perth, so

Oh baby! Magazine’s new arrival Daniella Ruru believes the saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ has never been more true. The Waste to Art exhibition is a part of the Lake Macquarie City Council’s Sustainable Neighbourhoods Program. Growing support Growing facial hair and playing a board game may be the most masculine way of tackling men’s health this month. Movember launched its annual month-long campaign on Sunday, with those who can asked to ignore the itch and rally in support of men’s mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Now in its 17th year, Movember Australia has challenged the community to sign up as a Mo Bro and grow a moustache (a “mo”) or show support for men’s health as a Mo Sista. ‘Mo your own way’ will also see
participants ‘Move for Movember’ and ‘Host a Mo-ment’. Movember’s Australia Country Director Rachel Carr said it was pertinent that men’s issues weren’t ignored, particularly this year. “If there’s ever been a time to embrace Movember and shed those lockdown beards, it’s now, in 2020,” she said. “It’s been an incredibly difficult year for men, which makes this year’s campaign our most important yet. “Research [that has been] conducted by Movember shows us the effects of the pandemic on men’s mental health, in particular, is
concerning, and is still far from over. “Job losses, relationship stresses and social isolation are taking a toll. “We’ve been working hard to fasttrack digital mental health resources to address the need. “Every donation, no matter how small, adds up. “Signing up for Mo-season is also a great way to stay connected within your own social circles – it’s been shown that supporting others can improve your own wellbeing. “With the help of our community, Movember will continue funding and applying research to prevent our fathers, brothers, partners, sons and
friends from dying prematurely.” Movember is a global charity raising funds to deliver innovative research and support programs that enable men to live happier, healthier, and longer lives. Brace for more wet weather Well it is the beginning of November, the last month of spring, but, according to weather forecasters, we are in for another cold front and more rain. The rain is great, but the vegetable garden dislikes cold and an unsettled spring. We can only roll with it, but don’t expect great production for fruiting vines such as passionfruit. Spring annuals haven’t come to their usual brilliance at this time of year. I have dug out my white primula and replaced them with red and white petunias for Christmas. Lobelia and pansies are still holding, probably because of the lower temperatures and much-needed rain. Taller growing bulbs – hippeastrums, iris, arums and Watsonia – show their beauty during early November, which I enjoy more
than spring bulbs as they seem to have more longevity. If you are fortunate enough to have access to Watsonia bulbs (which can generally be sought through ‘The Diggers Club’ at Mornington), they are useful for background planting as they grow into large clumps, growing to 120cm tall. Their strap-like foliage bares even taller spikes in white, pink, salmons and red, which are ideal for cutting in spring when other flowers may be scarce. Plants can be divided after the foliage dies in late summer or early autumn – bulbs should be planted out in autumn. November is the month to prune back spring flowering shrubs, cutting diorama and daisies lightly. Climbing roses that are flowering now can be pruned back when

this flush is fi nished and fertilised with poultry manure, although I must admit I never prune mine as they are covering a long colour bond fence. If you are training a climber over an arbor or as a feature it may be necessary to prune, but never prune climbers in July, along with other roses, which would cut off the flowering wood. How are your tomatoes going this year? They may need extra help with sulphate of potash and a side dressing of blood and bone if green fruit are forming. It is time to introduce fruit fly traps and paint the stake with a mix of Vegemite and Malathon to attract the female fly. Once large fruit begins to ripen, the fruit fly will invade unless precautions are taken.

Lauren is a journalist at NBN News in Newcastle. She originally grew up in Cessnock, went to school in Maitland, and graduated with a Bachelor of Communication from the University of Newcastle in 2018. Writing has always been a passion for Lauren and, as a teenager, she knew she wanted to find a way to do it every day. Spending time at local radio stations, the university’s student communication team and NBN during her degree eventually led to a job at NBN, which she says she is “so grateful for”. Getting to know the community better has quickly turned into one of her favourite parts of the job. “I feel so lucky to share the stories of those in it, and report on issues that matter to local people,” she says. Lauren can’t think of anywhere she’d rather live than Newcastle.
GOOD FOOD/WINE Growing up in the Hunter Valley, I’ve been very spoilt! I love going out for a great meal or a glass of local wine now I just need to learn to cook a lot better than I do.
DOGS Our family recently lost our beautiful dog Lilly after 16 amazing years - she was our best friend. But we have another little friend, Daisy, who joined us last month!
FAMILY My family and my partner Jake are such a big part of my life. Whether it’s watching a funny show on TV or going out for a fish, it’s always great to spend time together.
