This week...

From the editor I’ve just come back from a much-needed break. I made the most of the week off, starting with a trip to the Central Coast to see my dad and visit the ‘Gosford Glyphs’ – a series of hieroglyphs carved into a hidden rockface in the Brisbane Water National Park. The glyphs have been the source of much debate over the decades, with some locals maintaining a belief in their authenticity while many others, including Egyptologists who have visited the site, adamant they are fake. One theory is that Australian soldiers, who were stationed in Egypt during World War I, were responsible for the glyphs. I’d definitely recommend a trip to see them if you haven’t already. Apart from this bushwalk, I also nearly lost a finger playing golf when a huge fish leapt from a water hazard as I tried to retrieve a ball, and started to think about my Christmas shopping (as I’ve mentioned in previous columns, don’t be like me and leave it to the last minute year after year). This week’s cover and inside story follows a welcome boost to visitor numbers for wineries in the Hunter Valley after being smashed by drought, bushfires, and COVID-19. news Family service lends a hand Jamie-Lee and Belinda* are more like sisters than client and mentor. After being paired as part of the Home Start Family Services program 12 months ago, they have since formed a bond they say is now like family. Home Start Family Services is a home-visiting service based in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, which matches volunteers with families experiencing a range of social disadvantages. “They are like surrogate aunties or nannas,” Home Start Funding and Projects Officer, Val Watson, said. “They’re like an extra pair of hands and eyes.” Volunteers undertake a training program before being matched with families for home visits that take place at least once a week. “It might be simple things like

playing with the kids, helping with groceries, going to the park, or taking a load off so mum can do some odd jobs,” Ms Watson said. “Even allowing mum to relax, or just have a shower in peace, or sit and have a coffee. “As parents, we tend to normalise things. We say we’re okay and it’s normal and it will get better and it will pass, but it really is okay to ask for help.” For Belinda, it was her maternal health nurse who referred her to Home Start after she believed she may be experiencing depression. “I think I answered their questions too well,” she said. “When they asked me things like: ‘Do you feel tired since you had the baby, and do you cry everyday and do you feel like you need help?’ “I mean, of course I did, I think every mother does.”

The single mother-of-three says she’s thankful her honesty led to her meeting Jamie-Lee. “She’s become the best thing for me,” she said. The pair have been meeting once a week for the past 12 months. “It started off with doing the groceries together,” Belinda added. “One of us would hold the baby and the other would push the trolley. “Now we’ll do anything from meeting at the park for a play, to painting my Nana’s house together. “We have a lot of jokes together no matter what we do.”

Jamie-Lee, who is similar in age to Belinda, believes the program is a win-win for all involved. “I think Belinda helps me as much as I help her,” she said. “She really is like my sister now.” Home Start was the recipient of two grants earlier this year. The charity was awarded $10,000 in the City of Newcastle Community Boost Grant, as well as a $10,000 Australia Post Community Grant. news Garden grows into wedding hotspot Sue and Ben Bath enjoy pottering around in the garden – the difference is, theirs is unlike any other. What started as a hobby, in time, developed into a business, and now The Bath House Garden is one of the Hunter’s premier wedding destinations. “We have always had gardens around every house we’ve had, but when our children got older, the garden obsession started and we expanded our garden by growing into a paddock,” Ms Bath told the Newcastle Weekly. That’s when heads started turning, with locals driving by the property at Oakhampton Heights, near Maitland, to see if they could sneak a peek inside the developing oasis. “We started to get interest from gardening groups and charity days, and realised we loved sharing our garden and it’s evolved from that,” Ms Bath said. The English country style garden is inspired by the couple’s travels in Europe and France, featuring hedges, stone walls, lavender, roses and water features. It’s hard to believe the entire four-acre property is solely managed by the duo. However, they do have a little help with lawn

maintenance, thanks to a miniature cow called Ember. Born in the bushfire season last year, Ember arrived unexpectedly when the Baths bought her mother, who, unbeknown to them, was carrying the calf. The property now offers garden tours and is proving exceptionally popular with gardening clubs. So much so, they had to build ‘The Garden Room’ for morning and afternoon teas. “We get caterers in and we do a tour of the garden and tell them a few personal stories on how the garden came together,” Ms Bath said. Now, the garden is also making a name for itself on the wedding scene. “It’s for people who are looking for more of a boutique place that’s a bit different and very private with a personal feel,” Ms Bath said. “When they book here, they get to use all of the gardens, it’s exclusive and private, and we stay well out of the way.” For those wanting to experience the property, The Bath House Garden is open once a month to the public. “It’s an opportunity for us to meet people who

Surfing charity rides wave of support Newcastle’s Aimee Blacker is thrilled to have been recognised as a local hero this year. Ms Blacker, who is the co-founder of surf therapy charity Surfing the Spectrum, joins two other Hunterbased representatives in being acknowledged for their important work in the community. Surfing the Spectrum helps children with autism participate in recreational activities – from which they are often excluded – through providing surf therapy and free surf lessons. Ms Blacker said she was excited to receive a grant from the Westfield Local Heroes program. “I’m delighted, it is a great honour to be selected by my local community,” she said. “The most encouraging part is knowing the community is supporting what you’re doing, it’s encouraging and motivating.

“I suppose what [resonates] is statistics like 80% of Australians know somebody with autism, it impacts a lot of people’s lives, [and] most people can relate.” The charity currently caters for 150 families that attend each event in the Hunter Region, and the grant could provide a boost to the organisation’s intake. “[It] feels like we’re at capacity now, but we’ve felt the big need over the past 12 months,” Ms Blacker said. “And, support like that from Westfield Local Heroes is going to go a long way to helping us reach more people. “While 80% of Australians know an autistic person, only 4% of the autistic population feel supported.” Ms Blacker added that the grant would allow Surfing the Spectrum to finish the development of a training program for surf schools.

“That is why funding for our volunteer training programs are so valuable,” she said. “It gives us a chance to forge stronger and more cohesive communities.” Apart from Ms Blacker, the other Westfield Kotara winners were Monica Halliday, who founded the not-for-profit ‘Fight for Connar’, and Lyndsay Walker, a member of Lifeline Direct. Since 2018, the Westfield Local Heroes program has donated over $3.6 million across Australia. It celebrates individuals and their organisations whose work or activities create positive benefit for others. This includes nurturing a sense of belonging and inclusion, helping in times of community crisis, and promoting positive health and wellbeing. - Calum Thomson

One of Newcastle’s most iconic landmarks is set to return to its pre-COVID glory. Fort Scratchley will once again open its doors to weekday visitors from this Monday 2 November. After restrictions forced the venue to operate only on weekends, its army of volunteers are keen to welcome back a regular stream of visitors. The fort will open its doors every day except Tuesdays, with a daily gun firing to take place at 1pm, weather permitting. Morse code demonstrations will also return to the schedule every Wednesday.

“We are so happy to announce that Fort Scratchley will reopen in November with full activities and hours, with only a small reduction to the Tunnel Tours due to COVID-19 restrictions,” Fort Scratchley Historical Society’s Mary Tarrant said. Built in 1882 to defend the city against a possible Russian attack, it is now an interactive museum run by volunteers. While its guns were never fired in anger until 1942, the city now impresses with peaceful demonstrations when the occasion warrants. Admission to Fort Scratchley is free.

Airport to launch new services Newcastle Airport will launch two new direct services next month, linking the city to both Lord Howe Island and Canberra. From Saturday 14 November, Port Macquarie-based airline Eastern Air Services will conduct a weekly two-hour flight from Newcastle to Lord Howe Island. Canberra-based airline Link Airways will also provide a new service from Friday 20 November, offering four return flights to the country’s capital each week. Flights are expected to land within 60 minutes of take-off.

Newcastle Airport’s Chief Executive Peter Cock believed the opening of domestic borders could see an increase in travel within Australia. “At a time when we can see some hope on the horizon for the aviation industry, this is great news for both regions,” he said. “Our airport is surrounded by the largest regional economy in the country with a catchment that has a high propensity to travel.” Both services can be booked via the airlines’ websites or through a travel agent.

Federal police made an arrest in Rutherford last week as part of a nationwide operation into child abuse material. Operation Malto has led to 350 charges, 44 arrests and 16 children being removed from harm. The alleged offenders were employed in a range of occupations, including construction, transport, law enforcement and hospitality. AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said victims remain front of mind for law enforcement agencies.

“Arresting offenders and putting them before the court is only half the battle,” he said. “Identifying victims is a race against time and the ACCCE [Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation]’s victim identification team is relentless in rescuing children from sexual abuse. “Pixel by pixel, our investigators painstakingly look for clues and never give up and the tools they use give Australian police access to world leading expertise.”

Wineries bounce back from hardships The Hunter Valley’s wine industry has faced its fair share of hardships in the past 12 months. From drought to bushfires and a global pandemic, some vignerons in Australia’s oldest wine region have lost thousands of dollars in crops, events, and international tourism. Rather than harbouring feelings of sour

grapes, however, many of them have battled through and are now enjoying the fruits of their labour, with tourism returning bigger and better. As domestic travel restrictions continue to ease, the region’s 150 wineries are welcoming greater visitor numbers than they have seen in more than a decade.

Bimbadgen Estate General Manager Belinda Stapleton, who has worked in the valley’s wine industry on-and-off since the early 2000s, said visitor numbers were currently the best they’d been in a dozen years. “At first we put it down to post-lockdown cabin fever,” she said. “That was the June long weekend. “But it hasn’t stopped since then. In fact, if anything, visitation has increased.” Mrs Stapleton, who manages the two on-site restaurants, cellar door sales and events centre at the 27-hectare, family-owned winery, says COVIDled lockdowns are now seeing a silver-lining for the industry. Without causing too much distraction at the Pokolbin address, Bimbadgen has had time to complete a $1 million renovation of the property and take a fresh look at its business focus. “COVID was like the nail in the coffin for a lot of businesses after drought and bushfire smoke,” Mrs Stapleton said. “JobKeeper has helped, but we’re all still trying to catch up. “The increased domestic visitor numbers really has allowed us to reconnect with local people. news From page 12 “Overseas visitors tend to eat, drink, and leave, so this time has been a great opportunity for us to grow our brand locally.” Mrs Stapleton added that what the wineries need now is more staff. “We’re sharing casual staff in the area to keep us all afloat,” she said. “Now is the time for rebuilding and preparing for 2021.” Degen Estate’s Jean Degen said, although drought and bushfires had been challenging at the start of 2020, autumn rains, successful winter pruning, and loyal customers ensured the success of her family-run vineyard, cellar door and luxury accommodation. “Coronavirus brought our cellar door tasting and accommodation to a halt, however, our online wine sales grew and we’re hugely thankful to our loyal customers who supported us during the weeks of lockdown,” she said. “Since regional travel restrictions were lifted, we’ve worked very hard to adapt to the new normal. “It’s been wonderful to welcome guests back. “We’re optimistic and, if you can take away a positive, the challenges of this year have meant

we’ve looked carefully at everything we do and are trying to find ways of doing what we do better. “It’s our third decade in the Hunter Valley and we’re as excited as the first day we began our journey.” Briar Ridge Vineyard owner and general manager Jaclyn Davis said Hunter Valley wineries were bouncing back by winning awards and making changes. “[This year] has proved challenging for the entire industry,” she said. “But with some exciting developments in the pipeline and now recognition at the Riverina Wine Show, Royal Adelaide Wine Show and NSW Wine Awards, we feel confident in what’s coming up.” Travel restrictions, Ms Davis said, have fuelled unprecedented local patronage at the cellar door. “While the local ecosystem is showing remarkable recovery from crippling summer bushfires and widespread drought, we have just reintroduced an innovative vine and beekeeping experience, coinciding with the largest honey production our resident beekeeper has seen to date. “This is not only significant for the hives here

at Mount View but speaks volumes about the way the local area is recovering from what was an extraordinarily hard summer.” Earlier this month, wine grape growers were invited to apply for grants to help them rebuild after the Black Summer fires of 2019-20 led to crop loss. Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, David Littleproud, said the Federal Government recognised the unique hardships faced by wine grape growers. “Estimates indicate more than 60,000 tonnes of wine grapes were affected by smoke taint,” he said. “We know a large number of wine grape growers, though not directly impacted by fire, had their grapes rendered unusable for wine due to smoke taint. “The $5 million Wine Grape Smoke Taint grant program will assist these growers to reestablish.” Wine grape growers who suffered crop loss due to smoke taint but whose vineyards are outside of bushfire activated areas can access up to $10,000 to support their recovery efforts. The grants may be used to cover salaries, rent, wages, equipment, and fuel. - Rebecca Riddle

Whitebridge dancer Matthew Mortimer has been accepted into the Australian Ballet School’s interstate training program.

Dancer moves a step closer to his dreams Nine-year-old Matthew Mortimer already has a clear vision of where he hopes his future lies. The St Joseph’s Primary School, Charlestown, student was accepted into the Australian Ballet School’s Interstate Training Program for 2021 this month, taking him a step closer to his dreams. The talented Whitebridge dancer does not take his sport lightly, training a minimum eight or nine hours a week. That’s on top of the endless hours his mum Sally says he spends dancing around their home. “I think he was born to dance,” she said. “At home he dances 24/7. No one else in the family was a dancer so it didn’t come from us. “He just loves to dance.” Matthew has been honing his craft at Valentine’s Studi-O Dance School since he was four years old.

When his best friend Annabelle had a bring-a-friend day at her dance studio, Matthew attended purely to support his preschool buddy. However, that was the day he first fell in love with movement. “It makes me feel so happy,” he said. “I feel safe when I dance, like I’m with my people.” Sally says Matthew aspired to be a tap dancer when he was in preschool. “He was too young to do the classes but I bought him some tap shoes and he got his dad to make him a board that he took to school and he danced for his class,” she said. “He’d organised the whole thing himself.” His repertoire now includes contemporary, character, jazz, ballet, and tap. Despite only joining the industry six years ago, Matthew has won a string of accolades including a

Rising Star Award, exam honours, a Contemporary Award, Best Overall, Erin Bradshaw Award and an Examiner’s Award. The program at the Australian Ballet School offers a limited number of gifted students aged between eight and 14 unique access to learning that is synonymous with the Melbournebased school that was founded in 1964 by Dame Margaret Scott. Matthew’s dreams now extend well beyond Newcastle. “I’d like to dance full-time for the Australian Ballet School, and dance in The Company, I want to dance in the New York Ballet and then for the Bolshoi Ballet,” he said. Matthew’s dance teacher Miss Karen Barker-Rodgers says she has no doubt his dreams are achievable. “I’m thrilled for him,” she said. “For a boy that loves to dance, this is a guiding light.” - Rebecca Riddle

Pountney has embarked on an American adventure. The 20-year-old accepted a soccer scholarship from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, to pursue her soccer dreams. Pountney was motivated to make the move after hearing about the glowing reputation of college soccer in the United States. “I’ve always wanted to travel with soccer, so, if I can travel, and get an education for free pretty much because of scholarships, [then] I thought: ‘Well, why not?’” Pountney said. “Instead of [going to] university at home getting a HECS debt, I’m over here, playing soccer and getting to travel around America.” Pountney is undertaking a degree in Psychology while playing, and is enjoying life in the city known for its steaks.

“It’s very different, I’ve been realising a lot of words that I say aren’t the right words to say,” she said. “So [it’s been] a big culture change, and the way they run school here is very different, so the first couple of weeks it was really hard to try and get into the rhythm with everything.” Pountney first started playing soccer at the age of six and is a fast and energetic forward who grew up idolising both global and local stars. “A big [role model] would probably be Cristiano Ronaldo, because he was just so famous and well known,” she said. “As I got older I started to know more women’s players, so Gema Simon, who’s local to Newcastle, was another.” Pountney went on to make four

appearances for the Newcastle Jets in the W-League last season, providing one assist and netting one goal in the process. She said the nerve-racking experience of making her debut for her hometown club, and the elation of scoring her first goal, was one of her best memories. “My coach was like: ‘Are you ready to go on the field?’, and I was like: ‘I don’t think so’,” she said. “Scoring the goal was just the best feeling ever, a home crowd at the stadium was so much fun, and to have such a good team around me made that goal even better.” While she misses the country she calls home, Pountney has plans to use her soccer skills to travel the world and take her professional career to the international arena. - Calum Thomson

Find a diet and stick to it When it comes to healthy eating, Newcastle-based nutritionist Gemma Daley says you need to find what works for you and stick to it. “Finding a diet that is going to work and something you will be able to stick to long-term is the key,” she says.

“Don’t choose keto or a fad diet if you can’t stick to it and find some ideal swaps for what you like, for example swapping pasta for zucchini noodles or swapping rice for a lower carb option.” Gemma says that rather than decreasing the volume of food you

eat making these swaps will allow for larger meals because “you won’t be able to stick to it if you are hungry”. She adds that cauliflower is a great food to incorporate into your meals. It can be used in place of rice, potato, pasta, pizza, and pie crusts as it’s high in fibre and a low carb alternative to grains and legumes, as well as being a good source of antioxidants. Through her involvement with Workout Meals – an Australianbased organisation that creates nutritious ready-made meals with most ingredients sourced from an organic farm on the Central Coast – Gemma believes lifestyle change is an important factor for weight loss. She has a number of tips, which she recommends following until they become habitual. The first is to eat protein with every meal. Protein helps to build muscle and is extremely beneficial for weight loss. It leaves you feeling

fuller the longest as it assists in producing hormones. These proteins could also come from Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese and legumes. Eating 5-6 servings of vegetables daily is best. Adding large salads or stirfried vegetables to your meals can fill you up and provide your body with what it needs without adding empty calories as they are extremely nutrient dense. Include a couple of servings of low glycemic index starchy carbs such as sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and beetroot. Another tip is to drink more water. Aim for 2-3 litres per day. Cut out processed carbs. That means avoiding donuts, pies, and sugary drinks. You can eat whole grain breads and pasta but limit their intake. Finally, eat healthy fats every day. Get them from such things as walnuts, avocado, extra virgin olive oil and flax seeds. - Elizabeth Symington

For the pie: Sauté onion, garlic and thyme sprigs in pan till brown. Then add the carrots, peas and corn and cook for a further 8-5 mins, stirring occasionally until the vegetables start to brown. Stir in the mince and cook until brown. Pour in beef stock, tomatoes, tomato purée, and Worcestershire sauce. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until liquid begins to reduce and slightly thicken. Pawsitively adorable Maree Bendeich can still remember the moment she captured the awardwinning photograph of four-year-old Australian Bulldog ‘Nala’. Despite being almost 18 months ago, she still recalls the connection the pair had that day. “She was full of attitude, she had so much spunk,” Ms Bendeich says. “We had such a lovely time working together. “It’s probably one of my favourite photographs I’ve ever taken.” Ms Bendeich is a Newcastle-based pet photographer who owns Camera Plus Dog. The mother-of-two met Nala in May 2019, when the gentle, stocky pup modelled dog collars for a product range she represented. In October 2019, Ms Bendeich invited her back to her Shortland studio for some portraits that she was taking for her own collection. Seated comfortably on her perch above Ms Bendeich, Nala looked

straight down the lens at her with an expression that the happy snapper described as timeless. “When you work with bulldogs, everything is in slow motion,” Ms Bendeich says. “They don’t do anything quickly. “She was probably one of the first dogs I’d ever met that made my heart hurt. “It only happens once or twice a year, but she was one of them.” Nala passed away earlier this year from a mysterious, sudden heart problem. The photo won bronze at The Rise International Photography Awards last week. It was one of five photographs Ms Bendeich submitted for judging at the competition that featured 7,000 entries from 79 countries. The competition includes 12 categories, including pet and animal. Ms Bendeich won five bronze awards for all of her entries this year.

Judges described her work as having “great impact that grabs your attention”, “well-handled lighting”, and “great storytelling techniques”. It is a talent Ms Bendeich says takes patience and practice. “And sometimes food or squeaky toys, or owners pulling funny faces behind me,” she says. “I don’t interact with the dog during the shoot. I don’t touch them, I just photograph what I see.”

Despite enjoying the recognition, she says photographing pets allows her to combine her two greatest loves and often benefits the wider community. “When I photograph a dog for Dog Rescue, adoption goes up by about 80%,” she says. “A professional photo can mean a dog is adopted within two weeks and that’s a really rewarding feeling.” - Rebecca Riddle

Kyrah’s comedic debut in Housos Kyrah Brock-Fenton has made the most of her time in lockdown – the 19-year-old is about to become a face you’ll easily recognise. The former Hunter School of Performing Arts student made her comedic television debut this week as the country’s next big Tik Tok star, Holden, on the newest season of Housos. She says it is amazing to be a part of the show. “It was almost an out-of-body experience too because I was such a fan of the show and never dreamed of being a part of it,” she says. “I’m just at a loss for words, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity. “I was utterly speechless [when I

got the role] and have been for the last six months.” Housos 2020: The Lockdown has brought back the beer-drinking, bong-smoking, burnout-loving housos of Sunnyvale, but this time they are in lockdown at the hand of COVID-19. According to Kyrah, the lockdown is Holden’s fault. “Holden is the daughter of Shazza, and she has a boyfriend named J-dog and they come to the house on a mission,” she says. “Holden wants to be Tik Tok famous, but she breaks COVID restrictions and then gets put into lockdown with her mum and the other housos. “She definitely makes some

Chasing the Moon captures Newcastle’s magic When her two-year-old daughter couldn’t sleep, Liesel Rickarby’s husband began a tradition of driving her around Newcastle until she finally dozed off. The weary first-time dad would pass some of the city’s most iconic landmarks while the sky darkened, waiting for her to succumb to sleep. The night-time activity soon became known by the family as ‘chasing the moon’ around town. Animals, pirates, royalty, castles and even a

dragon became characters in the game that was cherished by the toddler. “She just loved these drives,” Liesel says of her daughter’s evening escapades. “Days later she would ask to see the castles again.” Liesel soon realised that her daughter had been adding a touch of magic to the sites she’d seen in the dark. “Everywhere the moon took them there were magical transformations of Novocastrian landmarks,” Liesel said. “The Town Hall had become a palace for a king and queen, Civic Park was a jungle full of wild animals, and the Art Gallery was home to a mummy dragon and her egg.” This imagery led to the creation of Liesel’s first children’s book, entitled Chasing the Moon.

The book follows the magical adventure of a little girl and her dad as they bundle into a car one evening and chase the moon around town. “It’s a peek into what Newcastle might look like to a child,” Liesel said. The book is the result of three year’s work by the

former ABC journalist. After she was robbed of full-time work through chronic illness, Liesel said she was forced to introduce a simpler repertoire of activities she and her daughter could do together. “We both read so many children’s books over that time,” she said. Liesel’s daughter is now six years old and, while her books have grown with her stature, Liesel continues to churn through her favourite genre. “I think children’s books are the pinnacle of human achievement,” she said. Chasing the Moon is illustrated by Newcastleartist Naomi Wild. “Her work is well-recognised in Newcastle,” Liesel said. “So I thought it was fitting that she bring the book to life with her touch of magic.” Earlier this month, the pair launched a crowdfunding page to keep production in Newcastle. A little bit of bling goes a long way Newcastle’s Katie Weaver can still remember staring, mesmerized at the accessory wall at Sportsgirl as a 16-year-old girl. “Every payday I would shop the latest and greatest earrings, parading my new purchases around the local shopping centre,” Weaver said. Her love of earrings was born from here. “It started innocently, getting compliments for my earring choice when I went out,” she said. “It became a bit of a running joke between my fiancé and I, ‘How many compliments would this pair get?’ “This cemented to me that I had an ‘eye’ for earrings.” When that love meant she was starting to become unsatisfied with what was on the market, Weaver took to making her own earrings. “I couldn’t find what I wanted in stores,” she said. “They were either cheap and

lasted one or two wears, or extremely expensive.” So, she did a course in laser cutting and designing, making pieces for herself and friends for two years until she had the confidence to unleash her own brand, Fred & Ginger. “We now have over 85 styles and are the busiest we have ever been, even with COVID people are still supporting us and we are so, so grateful,” Weaver said. That success has also been thanks to a few incredible opportunities. A collaboration with Nikki Parkinson from Styling You and Styling You The Label saw Fred & Ginger featured in her Spring/ Summer 2019 collection and on her catwalk show at Brisbane Fashion Week. Then came Shannon Dooley from Retrosweat, who reached out to promote Fred & Ginger pieces

cut and looked amazing. “Again, this really put Fred & Ginger on the map and introduced us to a whole new bunch of women who love earrings as much as we do.” Currently Fred & Ginger is only available online, however, there are big plans in place for the brand’s future. “We are looking for stockists, I would love to have our pieces in stores so people can see and touch and take them in,” Weaver said. “Down the track a bricks and mortar shopfront is the goal, a place to create and a place where people can come and get lost in a world of colour and sparkle.” - Emma Murphy

FAMILY AND FRIENDS My family means everything to me and not being able to get back to Newcastle to see them this year has been one of the hardest things. I’m looking forward to a lot of walks along the foreshore over Christmas with my parents and sister. It goes without saying that my fiancé Jeremy is my favourite thing.

Not many are aware that I also trained and worked as a makeup artist for a few years. With not much to do in Melbourne’s lockdown, I have been picking up the tools again and experimenting with colour – it is great inspiration for my earring designs.

MY DOGS Hendrix and Joplin, our 10-year-old Huskies, are our best friends and have moved everywhere with us. They bring so much joy to our lives, they’re always happy and love nothing more than to cuddle on the lounge watching television with me.

Born and raised in Newcastle, Katie has been an earring and jewellery enthusiast for decades. HAWAII We have been there four times and can’t wait to go again. In my view, it’s the best place in the world and somewhere that brings me absolute happiness. It truly is a special place, and those that have been know what I mean.

COFFEE We’ve lived in Melbourne for just over a year now and the coffee culture has 100% rubbed off on us. I’m a wannabe coffee enthusiast, Jeremy is the serious one and is very good at it. I get to enjoy the espresso, pour overs, and cold brews he makes.
