This week...

From the editor I’ve lost track of the amount of times I have scrolled through a news article on Facebook or a website only to read a comment referring to journalists as “grubs”, “parasites” and “liars”. Granted, the comments often fall under a sensationalised headline or click-bait article, but it irks me, as I’m sure it does other journalists or media representatives, to be lumped in with the rest. There are good and bad eggs in any profession. However, the media industry in Australia has unfortunately gained a negative reputation over the past few decades at least. I welcome former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s petition, which calls on a royal commission into billionaire Rupert Murdoch and his News Corporation empire. The petition alleges Murdoch’s monopoly of around two-thirds of daily newspaper readership has given it the power to intimidate others who have contrasting views. It claims these tactics “chill free speech and undermine public debate” and the petition has, at the time of writing, already gathered more than 175,000 signatures. We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until 28 March 2021. The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month. There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff. It’s part of our plan to keep business in business, and Australians in jobs.

news Defence contract to build body armour in Hunter Newcastle contractor Armour Composite Engineering (ACE) is on the cusp of hitting the big time, thanks to a $3.2 million defence contract. Liberal Senator for NSW Hollie Hughes was in Newcastle on Monday to announce the partnership, which will see the local company manufacture curved body armour for the Australian Defence Force. The materials used to make the body armour allow for high curvature to suit any size or shape, which is much different to the flat plate currently in service. “This technology, this curved body armour, is not only so much lighter, it’s so much more appropriate for our female operatives,” Senator Hughes said.

“This is the innovation coming out of the Hunter that is going to protect the lives of so many of our troops serving overseas.” ACE Chief Executive Adam Fairbairn said the contract would make a tremendous difference to the company. “It will help us to bridge the gap between a small supply here in Australia, to the ability to service large orders for allied countries,” he said. The United States has already shown interest, which will pave the way to an unimaginable level of success for the company. “Australia uses 5,000 to 10,000 units every couple of years, but the US, for example, is quite interested in our technology and they use hundreds of thousands every year,”

Mr Fairbairn said. The new curved armour reduces the fatigue of the wearer and increases their safety. “With a standard body armour plate, they’re quite flat, there’s minimal curvature – when that sits out of the chest it’s a bit of an obstacle and you can’t get your arms around it,” Mr Fairbairn said. “By curving the armour around the shape of the body, it allows for full movement so people can access all of their gear.”

And it is not just accommodating for women. “We’ve found there are quite a few men in the defence force and other government agencies that are quite fit and even the shape of their torso creates restrictions with their body armour, so we have made profiles for them as well,” he said. ACE will begin field trials with Defence in 2021. The armour is expected to be rolled out within the next two years. - Emma Murphy

news Centrelink offices set to close Thousands of Novocastrians have expressed their opposition to the planned closure of two Centrelink offices in the city. Federal MP Sharon Claydon established a petition against the proposal to shut offices in the CBD and Mayfield. The petition has since collected almost 3,500 signatures. Ms Claydon also spoke in parliament last week about the closures in a bid to bring an end to the plan. “The first I heard [of this] was when the Minister [Stuart Robert] wrote to me to tell me that the government will be closing the Mayfield and King Street Centrelink offices to replace them with a single office in a yet-to-be-determined location,” she said during her speech. “He talked coldly of ‘consolidation’ – which, of course, we all know is Liberal code for cuts, cuts and more cuts. “I have received dozens and dozens of calls, letters and emails of solidarity.” Ms Claydon added that 3,458 locals have signed the petition to call on the government to “axe this terrible plan”.

According to Ms Claydon, the closure of these Newcastle offices is part of a bigger plan. “Initially, we thought it was just the one office,” she said. “Then we learned of another and another and another. It quickly became clear that they weren’t isolated decisions. No, they were part of a devious, coordinated plan to shrink Centrelink’s frontline footprint by stealth.” A spokesperson from Services Australia said that it had approached the market for new premises in Newcastle to consolidate five tenancies into a single building in the Newcastle Business District. “The proposed consolidation includes a continuation of face-to-face services delivered to Newcastle residents, providing Medicare and Centrelink services in the same location,” the spokesperson said. “Further details about the approach to market and proposed timeline are commercial-inconfidence and cannot be released at this time. “The agency will inform the community in a number of ways before these changes happen, including local advertising and engaging with

community stakeholders including local and state government representatives. “Nearby businesses and medical providers will be contacted about the changes.” It added that, before any services are brought together, Services Australia assesses many factors, including the benefit and convenience to the community. When asked why the offices were closing, the spokesperson said: “As leases come up for renewal, we take the opportunity to review our servicing options to ensure we continue to meet the changing needs of the community”. - Elizabeth Symington

news Supporting families after pregnancy and infant loss Emily Magee will always be a mum, without a baby. She was 28 weeks pregnant when she made the unimaginably heartbreaking decision to terminate her pregnancy after her unborn daughter was diagnosed with a serious chromosome abnormality. “To love and anticipate this precious life, only to have it whisked away, it’s the kind of heartache other parents can sort of imagine but perhaps never truly grasp,” Ms Magee said. “Our baby had the ‘1q21.1 Deletion,’ a chromosomal condition associated with learning disabilities, developmental delay, infection and heart problems, the list goes on. “It’s incredibly rare, a sample of 1,000 people in the ‘normal’ population would find no carriers.

“A sample of 1,000 people with some form of disability might find 10.” Regina Rose was born on the 9th of May, cruelly, the day before Mother’s Day. “She was perfect, slender fingers, cherry red lips, and the most perfect button nose,” Ms Magee said. “For those who haven’t had children, it (the loss) is possibly even more unbelievable, and this highlights the desperate need to open up and start talking about stillbirth and infant loss. “The statistics haven’t changed in Australia in over 20 years. Losing a child is a devastating, isolating, lingering pain. “Outpourings of love came in hard and fast, and then stopped. “They’d say: ‘Reach out if you

The service will support families who have lost a baby before, during or soon after birth.

“It’s really difficult to say goodbye to a child when you don’t have any memories, it’s different to losing a grandparent who is 90-years-old and you can laugh about the good times – you don’t get that when you lose a child,” Ms Magee said. “The service is a good opportunity to take a step back and give some compassion to people who have had that loss and be able to have that delicate moment of sympathy.” - Emma Murphy

news Organisers pump brakes on popular Newcastle Toy Run

A beloved annual charity event has fallen victim to COVID-19. The Newcastle Toy Run, which was supposed to celebrate its 43rd edition, has been cancelled due to the pandemic. The event draws huge crowds

every December as more than 10,000 motorbikes roar into Newcastle to spread goodwill and put smiles on children’s faces. In 2018, a Superheroes theme helped raise an estimated $96,000 in cash and gift donations, with 4,000

families aided through support from the Salvation Army. Its success then inspired last year’s Costume for Kids concept. Bikers for Kids Newcastle Toy Run President, Daryn Young, said the event was critical to the group’s fundraising efforts. “[It’s] 100% important, without the fundraising side of it, there are no presents for the kids,” he said. “The donations are cash and presents, that’s what we’re all about.” Mr Young became Bikers for Kids Newcastle Toy Run Chairperson in 2017 and participated in his first toy run all the way back in 1986. He said complications caused by COVID-19 and government restrictions had forced organisers to pump the brakes on this year’s event. “COVID threw us a curveball,” Mr Young said. “The biking community does so

much for charity across Newcastle and Australia, [and] so many riding events have been cancelled due to COVID.” Despite the event’s cancellation, Mr Young said it was always “the biggest run of the year” and hoped to bring it back bigger and better next year. Bikers for Kids is still raising funds for the Salvation Army to distribute, with donations being made through the group’s website. Mr Young added it was also trying to organise drop off points for the public. There is also a chance to win a new bike for Christmas by entering Bikers for Kids’ great motorcycle raffle. news Jasmine’s vision for kids Eleven-year-old Jasmine Seidel likes playing with LEGO, reading books, dancing, and swimming. She is in her final year of primary school and is looking forward to wearing next year’s blue high school uniform. Unlike most pre-teens, however, Jasmine has a clear appreciation of how blessed she is, and it is this feeling of gratitude that spurs her to give to those less fortunate. Foregoing birthday gifts, washing cars, hosting cake stalls, and reading thousands of pages to raise muchneeded funds for various charities has seen the New Lambton Public School student nominated for this year’s Fred Hollows Junior Ambassador Award. “I am really lucky,” Jasmine said. “I have two really good parents and a nice, safe place to live, and we’re all healthy.”

Jasmine was nominated for the award by her mother Angela, who says her efforts in raising more than $6,600 over the past five years was to be commended. “It was approaching her seventh birthday and Jasmine said to me: ‘Mummy, I want a party, but I don’t want presents, I want people to give a donation instead,'” Angela said. “She wanted the money to go to the John Hunter Oncology Ward.” Unlike most children, Jasmine was no stranger to “The John” – her father worked as an emergency doctor at the Hunter medical hub for many years. “I wanted the kids who are there to have a really good life,” Jasmine said. “If they live past the cancer, I want them to remember that at least their room was nice.” Jasmine’s first encounter with the

hospital was when her father took her to the pediatric ICU when she was just four years old. Since then, she’s been passionate about following in his footsteps and joining the medical profession. “I want to work in emergency,” Jasmine said. “As a doctor, or as a paramedic. I want to make sick kids better.” As a family, the Seidel’s are longtime sponsors of children through international charity World Vision. Jasmine’s fundraising efforts have also benefitted Heartkids Australia and Multiple Sclerosis Limited.

“Our community has benefitted from Jasmine’s enthusiasm, leadership, and creativity,” Angela said. “She’s shown that there is always an opportunity for kindness, compassion and integrity and our use of these is only limited by our imagination.” Jasmine is one of six Hunter children to be announced as a finalist in this year’s Fred Hollows Junior Ambassador Awards. Sleeping rough for those who are doing it tough Imagine having nowhere to live, nowhere to sleep, or nowhere to call home. That’s a reality for far too many people across the Hunter Region but, at the end of this month, participants in the Vinnies Community Sleepout will have a glimpse of what it is like to sleep rough. Typically, the national charity hosts an event at Maitland Gaol, but COVID-19 has forced organisers to host the event online. However, Regional Director Clare Van Doorn is hopeful the virtual event will lead to more participants. She adds it will likely give people a different experience of what homelessness can be like. “People are participating by either sleeping in their backyard, in the car or on the couch,” Ms Van

Doorn says. “We hope to get more participants because they can do it from their own space as well, but also, they’ll get a sense of what it may be like to be in a homeless or near homeless situation. “It is so important for awareness because, quite often, people aren’t aware of what the situation is with homelessness. “They may think of it in big cities, but it is in our local communities as well. This social issue [exists] absolutely everywhere.” The charity hopes to show that having a safe place to call home is a right for the 116,000 Australians longing for a permanent roof over their head. Fundraising Coordinator Jennifer Barrie says that the money donated from the sleepout will go towards

supporting the people who need help. “A lot of people are suffering, so all funds raised are appreciated,” she says. “We think there will be a wave of people who need our help as the extra income from COVID-19 support begins to wind down. “People are more aware of those doing it tough, but we still need to raise money and awareness.”

The Community Sleepout event is open to anyone within the state and will be hosted on Friday 23 October. Television presenter Deborah Knight will host the virtual event, during which a live stream will share information about the harsh reality faced by people living without a secure place to call home. Preparations started this week for the upgrade of Cessnock Road at Testers Hollow. The $17 million project is being jointly funded by the Federal and NSW Governments to reduce the impact of flooding and improve connectivity. Maitland State MP Jenny Aitchison said the work was long overdue. “It was promised four years ago, they had to do flood checks, but the reality is we were told before the 2019 election work would start then, so I don’t know what the hold-up was,” she said.

“We have had three to four years of drought, we know there is significant rain predicted this year, but we’ll take it (the upgrade).” Transport for NSW has recently awarded the contract to Daracon to build the new, two lane road that will be 1.5 metres higher than the existing road. Work will be undertaken between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Friday, and between 8am and 1pm on Saturday. There will be some temporary traffic changes to ensure the work zone is safe. Lane closures and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place. - Emma Murphy

Plans to land a permanent home for historic Catalina Bill Anderson and his team are one step closer to securing a permanent home for ‘Our Girl’ amongst RAAF memorabilia. The 1943-built Catalina, which has been the focus of more than 16,000 hours of careful restoration, is set to be housed at Rathmines Park following 12 months of community consultation. It comes after Lake Macquarie City Council adopted its Rathmines Park Plan of Management earlier this week. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the park was “an iconic location steeped in history and a picturesque spot by the lake”. “The adoption of the Master Plan for Rathmines Park provides some certainty for the area and, importantly, offers a framework for

future development and use of the park,” she said. The amphibious aircraft, built for the US Navy and widely acclaimed for its use during World War II, has been a labour of love for the Rathmines Catalina Association (RCA) for the past five years. The Catalina has undertaken an extensive restoration after it was located in 2013 being used to transport oil exploration crews from a runway in Puerto Rico. The iconic flying boat, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, had not flown for over 10 years when it was purchased and transported to Newcastle by sea. news Mental health advocate calls for more conversations Many Novocastrians regard Lyndsay Walker as a super fit athlete who completes a series of physically demanding challenges all in the name of charity. Mr Walker, however, wants to be “the best listener I can be”. The former professional cricketer, who represented Nottinghamshire in the English County Championship, has joined Lifeline as a Crisis Support Operator. Mr Walker underwent a gruelling 10-week course, during which he was trained to be non-judgemental and to listen to people’s pain. “It was one of the hardest things I’ve done – to be tested and evaluated to see that you’ve got what it takes to sit with anyone – they may be sad, lonely, or in an urgent crisis, so suicidal,” he said.

“There are many different reasons [for a call] and, in my experience, it can be quite challenging but very rewarding when the call ends and they go: ‘Thank you for listening’ or ‘thank you for being my friend.’” During the first few months of the pandemic, Lifeline received an unprecedented number of calls, recording 250,000 across the nation from March to June. This included about 3,000 in the Hunter Region. Mr Walker believed the period leading into Christmas could prove challenging for many individuals and families, citing the decrease in JobSeeker as a major factor. The Federal Government opted to cut back its fortnightly coronavirus boost, which applies to people on JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, Austudy and other benefits, from $550 to $250

Meal prepping tips When it comes to making some healthy choices at mealtimes and managing our work-life balance, time can often get the better of us and lead to unhealthy decisions. So, Mayver’s has put some tips

Podcast promotes vital breast cancer trial Two of Newcastle’s most popular podcasters are set to launch a special episode today (Thursday 15 October) in a bid to promote some groundbreaking research. Oversubscribed’s Laura Jackel and Alana Nixon have partnered with Australia’s oldest and most respected breast cancer research organisation, Breast Cancer Trials (BCT), for

the episode. The duo hopes their podcast will help spread the word of a new world-class clinical trial. “We are thrilled to have a part in spreading the message about this new clinical trial and also about breast cancer and the importance of breast cancer research generally,” Laura said.

“[Breast Cancer Trials] do amazing work. “This new BRCAP trial is a worldfirst clinical trial that will hopefully save women who have the BRCA1 gene from needing a preventative double mastectomy. “Both of us have friends and close family members who have been affected by breast cancer and know how important it is to find research participants and raise awareness of the work that researchers do more broadly.” Breast Cancer Trials is now recruiting for the trial, which is designed to help women with the BRCA1 gene mutation, who have an approximate 70% risk of developing breast cancer and 40% risk of developing ovarian cancer over their lifetime. “Currently, for these women the most commonly used preventative option is the surgical removal of their breasts and/or ovaries,” Medical Oncologist and BCT media adviser Dr Nick Zdenkowski said.

Double trouble amid sisters’ search for love Newcastle’s Elly and Becky Miles have traded sunset dates at Bar Beach for finding love on national television. Originally hailing from Parkes, the sisters made their reality debut last week and, in an Australianfirst for The Bachelorette franchise, they’re both looking for love from the same bunch of guys. Elly said she was excited to bring a little bit of “Newy” to TV screens across the country. “It was amazing, we had such an awesome journey together,” she told Newcastle Weekly. “Not only were we alongside each other, but we got to have a pretty amazing, unique adventure together as sisters.” The 26-year-old added, despite

her fears, “potentially meeting the love of your life definitely outweighed any concerns”. For Elly, it’s not the first time her quest for love has been so public. She first hit the spotlight last year when she put up a fight for Matt Agnew’s heart on The Bachelor. She said returning to the show was nerve wracking at times. “It was like coming home to a family, a lot of the crew were the same, it was a surreal feeling being back,” she said. “There was a bit of added pressure because you have to get to know a lot of different people and you’re hurting people and that is really tough. “It was a wonderful experience but there was a bit of difficulty

Short film highlights domestic violence Jye Currie has always been a man on a mission. In 2018, he travelled to the most impoverished and dangerous parts of Africa to capture the living conditions there. Now, Currie is shining a light on the plight of those who live through domestic violence by producing a short film. “During COVID I was reading that the rates of domestic violence had escalated, and I thought now would be the best time to portray my message,” Currie said. His film, Victim, tells the story of a mother who is a survivor of domestic abuse at the hands of her husband and her son’s plight to save her. But, when her son goes missing, the story takes a tragic turn.

“It was originally going to be on alcoholism, but the script kept evolving and, slowly without knowing it, touched more on domestic violence,” he said. “You can raise awareness on any social issue through a fictional film. “I wanted to show a raw insight into what a house experiencing domestic violence looks like – people have heard the term but don’t know how harsh it is, so this film is giving an insight into that.” Shot in Newcastle, the film showcases the town, while also using local actors and crew members. “I have done a lot of travel, I’ve just returned from a seven-month trip around the world, and the more I travel the more beautiful Newcastle is, and to showcase it

parts of the world. “I created Box Beyond Borders to address inadequate female hygiene in developing countries,” Sophie says. “I had the idea in Year 11 and then over the past couple of years I‘ve just been wondering if I should start it, but it wasn’t until I went to Vanuatu and Malawi and saw the issue in context that I thought something really needs to be done about it.” Each month, Sophie creates period subscription boxes that include two packets of period essentials, such as liners, pads and tampons, some chocolates, and a surprise gift from Sukin, Garnier, The Ministry of Tea or Loving Earth. For every box purchased, Sophie then buys a menstrual cup to donate to a woman in need in Vanuatu, Malawi, Kenya, or India. Sophie says it is a simple purchase that can have a life-changing impact. While the boxes can be bought as one-offs, she encourages women to start a subscription. “You can subscribe for the boxes

– you could get one every month, three months or 12 months,” she says. “The one for one business model means customers can get their needs met to make them feel good while they are helping someone in need.” To distribute the menstrual cups, Box Beyond Borders has a partnership with Sophie’s former school, St Phillips Christian College. The school has connections in Malawi and Vanuatu, as well as India and Kenya. Before the school makes a trip to any of these countries, Sophie plans to educate some of the female students about how to properly use a menstrual cup. After these lessons, the students would then take the cups over to those countries and distribute them throughout in need communities. Boxes are $33.95. How to care for African violets Readers will probably agree with me in this situation: two of the most difficult plants to purchase in flower and keep them looking great are African violets and fuchsias. These two beautiful flowering plants can cause angst. This even happens to me – once taken home, the violets stop flowering and the fuchsias just up and die for no apparent reason. Instead of throwing away African violets when they stop flowering, try these 10 hints, requiring just a little common sense and care. 1. Good light: about 40 centimetres from a window, but not in direct sunlight. North-easterly is a good position. 2. Keep turning the plant so it gets light on all sides.

3. Fresh air, but not in a draught. Open the window during a calm and moist day. 4. Water carefully. The best method to use is a wick. One end into the base of the pot, then the other into a dish of water below the container. 5. Root rot will be caused because the base of the pot is in water. 6. Fertilise regularly every two weeks in spring, summer, and autumn. 7. Never fertilise during winter – fertilising only when the soil is moist. 8. Tepid water should only be applied under the leaves. 9. Roots should never be allowed to dry out. 10. Remove spent leaves and dead blooms.

The normal flowering season for fuchsias lasts from June through to December. At the end of this period, your fuchsia will be short on nitrogen and perhaps looking a little bedraggled. This lack of nitrogen causes a semi-dormancy period, which is the plant’s way of counteracting our hot summers. During this hibernation time fuchsias aren’t growing a great

deal and they should be watered sparingly. By April, the weather is becoming cooler and less humid when fuchsias are ready to grow again. Ideal conditions for growing fuchsias include an early morning sun position, soil kept moist but not wet, and protection from the wind and frost.

My favourite things

My favourite happy place is my home. A space to be creative, to meditate, to laugh and replenish. I love walking through the door after a long day to my Border Collie “Bogart” and my partner to greet me with hugs. I am very lucky!

SURFING I feel most at peace in the water, especially the ocean. Since discovering surfing again at 25, it has allowed me to form a whole new connection to water and life below. I love how alive it makes me feel and how it teaches me to observe and trust.

CORETHICS FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Born and raised in Newcastle, Melissa has been involved in social and environmental activism for over 10 years. Her love for the planet and people began at the ripe age of 11 when she delivered a “keep Port Stephens clean and green” speech to the council chambers. Melissa was successful in securing a start-up grant though the University of Newcastle’s Centre for 21st Humanities in 2016 and Pitchfest in 2018. This enabled her to undertake field research into the impacts of mass tourism on land rights, water depletion and pollution in Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa in Indonesia. As the Founder, Executive Director, and Consultant for Corethics, Melissa’s vision is to empower fashion designers who choose to manufacture offshore in developing countries. She will host a film fundraiser #waterforbali on 24 October at Event Cinemas Kotara.

I’ve always had a love for the planet. So, gardening is a natural extension of my passion for organic growing practices and combining my zero-waste approach to food. There is something magical about growing a plant from seed, tending to it, and then whipping it up into a delicious dish.

BALI I have travelled to Bali almost a dozen times as a tourist and, more recently, for work with Corethics. I love the layers of culture, chaos, consciousness, religion, and natural landscapes. It is a real melting pot of beauty and heartbreak that drives me to advocate on matters that need attention.

CONNECTION Human connection is second to none. There is something special about sharing life’s journey with another person, a stranger, a friend, a family member. I love learning about others culture, religion, philosophy, and life experience. These connections have given me a deeper understanding of unity.
