From the editor I’ve written countless articles on mental health during my time in the media. I previously covered the start of the Where There’s A Will foundation in Scone, which is doing some fantastic initiatives in schools and the community across the Upper Hunter, and have had a close relationship with Lifeline ever since I started at this magazine. While I had sadly seen one or two mates go through their own mental health battles over the years and tried to be as supportive as possible, I feel that it’s often hard to fully appreciate the impact and severity of someone going through a mental health condition until you see it on a very regular basis. This has been the case for me over the past few months with a loved one. It is never easy seeing someone you love change in front of your eyes and become a shadow of their former selves. For me, it has certainly reinforced the importance of letting other people know how you are feeling and to understand that you’re not alone in your own thoughts. This week’s cover star is R U OK? ambassador Jacob Ridgeway. The annual event, which takes place next Thursday (10 September), urges people to check in on each other. As Jacob points out, it’s important to ask this simple question all the time, but even more so this year given how many are struggling in the community right now.

news Dads encouraged to share their journey in safe space A miscarriage is a devastating loss. For Lake Macquarie-based dad Nathan Andrews, it was one of the hardest times of his life. “My partner and I were trying to fall pregnant for about 18 months, and it just wasn’t happening,” he said. “[When] we finally fell pregnant, we lost the baby within 12 weeks, so we were devastated. “[I felt like] I didn’t have anyone to talk to – my partner was able to get online and talk to all the girls and other mothers about it, but there wasn’t really anything for me. “I went into a massive [state of] depression and didn’t know who to talk to.” Nathan struggled with the loss for quite some time but, not long after the miscarriage, his wife,

Hannah, fell pregnant. Their little ‘rainbow baby’, Noah, is now three. In 2018, after finding the strength to move forward, Nathan started a Dads of Newcastle Facebook group to make sure any father who found themselves in a similar situation had a support network available. “I finally got out of it when my boy was six-months-old,” he said. “I wish I had someone to talk to [during my struggles], so I started the page.” The group is a place for local fathers or fathers-to-be to connect with others. Nathan hopes it helps people who are feeling a bit isolated or depressed and want to break the stigma around mental health.

“I was pretty loud about how I dealt with everything on the page when I first started,” he said. “There is light at the end of the tunnel, that’s what I was trying to get across to everyone. “I want them to know that they are not alone – if they are going through something, they have support. “No matter how brave a dad looks on the outside, they’ve still gone through it on the inside.”

Nathan believes that most men do not like to speak up, so the group is a safe space for them to be heard and, with almost 700 members, he knows it is working. He adds the group is about to become extra helpful in his life, as his family prepares to welcome a third child. news App connects young people At 23-years-old, most people are still finding their path in life. That’s not the case for Maddy Boyd – she’s run off her feet helping her family at two McDonald’s franchises. But her journey to such an impressive career is one filled with heartache and immense loss. Maddy was on track to move to the United States to pursue a professional golfing career at the age of 16 when her father, the owner of the franchises, was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer. “It was quite an overwhelming experience and filled with isolation – I had no life experience to prepare for it,” she said. That’s when she found CanTeen, an Australian organisation that helps young people cope with cancer. “Shortly after dad’s diagnosis, I

was given CanTeen resource books and that was my first involvement with CanTeen,” Maddy said. “I then signed up to the website, which was a bit more basic than it is these days, where you could access people who had been through similar situations and resources.” During her father’s six-year battle with the disease, he guided her through taking over the reins at both the family franchises while Maddy completed a double degree in business and law. Sadly, he passed away last year. “I am lucky enough to go to work every day and be in an environment that dad built,” she said. “Almost every time I do payroll or employ a new person or fix a piece of equipment, I think of dad and know that he taught me how to do that and I think that’s really special.” Maddy has since taken on a

leadership role with CanTeen, and is the ambassador for its new CanTeen Connect app. “We created CanTeen Connect so young people affected by cancer can access a professional counsellor seven days a week on chat or Zoom, or hook into a community of 12 to 25-year-old’s struggling with cancer in the family,” CanTeen Chief Executive, Peter Orchard, said. “There are resources like how do I talk to my friends or family? What are some things I can do to look

after myself? What’s it like to have a sibling diagnosed with cancer or a parent who has died of cancer? “Often they say: ‘That is the first time I was talking to someone who just gets what I’m going through.’ “It provides a weird sense of relief that they are not abnormal, they are having a normal reaction to something like cancer.” Visit canteenconnect.org for more information about the organisation’s app. - Emma Murphy

news Family embraces new start Fleeing a war-torn country and losing everything you’ve ever owned. It’s a scene most of us cannot imagine but, for Syrian refugee Darwich Sido, it was a reality. Eight years ago, Darwich, his wife Zaynab and three children, Mohamad, Khalil and Aysha, were forced to leave their home in Aleppo to seek refuge in Lebanon. It came after the family lost everything, including their business, to the ravages of war. “Me and my extended family had a very large tailor business,” Darwich said. “My father gave the business to me and this all was lost when we had to leave, when all of our homes and buildings were destroyed and burnt down. “My family is still back home, and they are also still struggling to live a humble life, with their first source of

money gone. “We had to leave and go escape to Lebanon for my kids to be safe and for me to be able to give them a happy life.” In Lebanon, the family began the journey of seeking refuge to Australia and, in May 2016, they finally arrived on our shores. Darwich, Zeynab and the children then moved to Newcastle to start a new life – a period that Darwich described as challenging. “It was very hard,” he said. “[Just] think about leaving your home, family and business and having to go somewhere new, starting from scratch, not even knowing if your family is going to be safe tomorrow.” He added that, while it was difficult, the Newcastle community made them feel very welcome. “It’s a beautiful city, very respectful

and nice people, [everyone] welcomed us with smiles,” Darwich said. “The community is very giving, and everyone wants to help as much as they can.” Fast forward four years, and the Sido’s are thriving in Newcastle. The family even launched its own tailoring business, Sido Tailor, in 2018. And, while it hasn’t come without its struggles, Darwich said it’s been nice to give back to the

community that has given them so much. “At first it was very difficult, the business was very slow,” he said. “Then we thought of making face masks to sell for only $5 as an engagement for the community, because we know the pandemic has been tough on everyone. “So, this [is our way] of thanking Newcastle people.” - Elizabeth Symington

Rise in flood service

Enjoying a stroll or bike ride along the Hunter River from Morpeth to Walka Water Works is an activity that may soon be possible. Maitland councillors unanimously supported plans to apply for $886,000 in funding for a shared pathway at last week’s council meeting. Stage one of the project includes a pedestrian and bicycle path, which will travel from Robert Street to Paterson Bridge, Morpeth. The pathway, which would boast interpretive public art and wayfinding signage, as well as seating and bike racks, is part of a larger project to link two of Maitland’s significant iconic sites. Cr Donald Ferris believed the pathway was a vital project. “It will help the liveability of the community; not everyone will be relying on cars to get around and everyone could enjoy the river,” he said. “A good ride from Walka to Morpeth would be amazing.” Stage one, if approved, will be funded under the NSW Government’s Resources for Regions fund. - Emma Murphy

A terrace for outdoor dining, a boutique dining and restaurant space and a new covered walkway are part of a proposed concept design that will see Awaba House rise from the ashes on the shores of Lake Macquarie. Lake Macquarie City Council’s Manager Property and Business Development, David Antcliff, said the revitalised heritage building would provide a vibrant dining and functions venue, adjacent to the newly renovated Museum of Art and Culture (MAC). “The concept design is based on extensive community consultation we’ve undertaken for the site since fire caused major damage in August 2019,” Mr Antcliff said. “We’re proposing to retain and restore the historically significant external form and features of the building, with changes to the internal layout for a modern restaurant and function space. “The plans also include a small kiosk and a new terrace to the east of the building providing sheltered outdoor seating, where diners will be able to soak up the stunning lakeside vistas.”

City of Newcastle is encouraging residents to register for its free flash flood alert service after July brought record-breaking rainfall and severe East Coast Lows. July’s wet weather saw a 41% increase in subscriptions between 25 July – the day before an East Coast Low dumped 107.6mm of rain at Nobbys’ weather station across three days – and mid-August. The late July weather event triggered moderate flood warnings to be issued across several suburbs. Around 2,000 emails and text messages were sent to residents, as well as 474 pre-recorded messages to landlines. “Due to our city’s topography, heavy rainfall can cause flash flooding in low-lying areas extremely quickly,” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said. “This is why our flash flood alert service is an important tool to help residents avoid hazardous areas and remind them to never walk or drive through fast-moving and unpredictable floodwaters, potentially preventing serious injury or worse.”

The Newcastle-based musician and R U OK? ambassador is urging the community to check in on their mates during the annual event on Thursday 10 September. “R U OK? Day is important because asking that question might be the last time we get to ask that to someone,” he says. “It has the potential to save a life, especially in the times that we are in now. “R U OK? Day is important all the time, but now it’s crucial.” The proud Worimi-Gamilaroi man works with the suicide prevention charity because it is a cause close to his heart. Jacob knows the struggles people face all too well, having

battled with his mental health after losing loved ones close to him. “I was going through my own struggles with depression and anxiety and post-traumatic stress and, as I grew as a person and got to understand my coping mechanisms, I felt like I was in a position where I could potentially help someone else get through theirs,” he says. “It got to a point where I thought I would reach out to R U OK? and I’ve been with them for the last two years working towards suicide prevention and promoting the power of conversation to change someone’s life.” R U OK? Day aims to inspire and empower people to meaningfully connect with those around them and start a conversation with

news New research dives into corrosion on ocean floor Steel pipes, sunken ships, discarded weaponry and other decommissioned infrastructure corroding on the ocean floor are the subject of a new research project at the University of Newcastle. Lead Researcher, Professor Rob Melchers, said it was common practice to leave pipes and other disused steel assets to corrode at the bottom of the ocean, where environmental conditions such as water temperature, salinity and acidity all influenced the rate of corrosion of metals. “Our initial focus is to be able to predict, with greater accuracy, how long it will take decommissioned oil and gas pipes off Australian coasts to corrode,” Professor Melchers said. “Some of these objects may still contain contaminants that could

eventually leak into the environment, so tools for predicting when this is likely to happen are important.” The project, which is funded by a grant from National Energy Resources Australia (NERA) and the National Decommissioning Research Initiative (NRDI), will review historical data to develop a tool for predicting the lifespan and corrosion behaviour of decommissioned infrastructure in the ocean. “Once we develop such a tool, it will have applications for similar situations globally, for example, in the North Sea, where there is an abundance of corroding oil mining infrastructure and even discarded items from World War I and II,” Professor Melchers said. A research team at the University of Newcastle is exploring corrosion at the bottom of the ocean.

Melchers and research partner Professor Mike Tan, from Deakin University, will perform corrosion monitoring experiments in a simulated marine environment. By mimicking marine conditions in the laboratory, factors influencing corrosion can be controlled and corresponding corrosion rates measured. Of particular interest to the research team is the influence of microorganisms and biofouling on corrosion of metal structures. “Our experience shows that

environmental conditions, including pollution levels, influence the growth of bacteria in the water, which, in turn, impacts the rate of corrosion,” Professor Melchers said. “Our most immediate concern is for oil and gas being released from corroding pipes, but there are still places in the world that have unexploded weapons beneath the sea. “The more we learn about rates of corrosion under different conditions, the more accurate our assessment of risks, such as leaking or even exploding.”

Angela Barry is thrilled to be able to access Blacksmiths Beach thanks to a new ramp.

Beach’s new all-access ramp Lake Macquarie resident Angela Barry says it has been years since she ventured onto the beach. As a wheelchair user in a coastal city, the beach had always been beyond her reach. However, she can now enjoy the region’s spectacular coastline, thanks to a $380,000 accessibility upgrade at Blacksmiths Beach. “It’s great to see Lake Macquarie

council investing in making our beaches more accessible to people with mobility limitations,” Ms Barry said. “Without ramps such as this, our beautiful city beaches are just offlimits to wheelchair users.” The recently completed Lake Macquarie City Council works include an all-access ramp, pathway and viewing platform at the high

point of the foredunes, overlooking the water. The constructions are made with fibreglass-reinforced plastic mesh, designed to withstand the harsh beach environment. A separate buggy access path to the beach has also been installed, providing access for the wheelchair buggies available to hire free of charge during the beach season. The council’s Community Planner Ageing and Disability, Jennifer Linton-Webb, said the works provided beach access to wheelchair and mobility aid users, people with prams, and other people who had difficulty walking. “One of the key focus areas of our Disability Inclusion Action Plan is creating liveable communities for everyone,” she said. “Improving access to beaches and waterways not only helps us achieve that goal – it means people with disability have the chance to enjoy simple pleasures that many people living close to the coast take for granted.”

Park upgrade A disused tennis court in Reay Park, Dudley, is set to receive a makeover, with Lake Macquarie City Council asking the community what type of facility they want at the site. Located on Ocean Street, the site is also home to a number of storage buildings, a fenced playground, picnic shelter, an amenities’ building, and sports field. The council’s Community Asset Management Coordinator, Susan Stewart, said it would be guided by the community to provide a facility that would serve the area best. “Whether it’s a multiuse court or a pump track for young cyclists, we will be listening intently to all feedback before we decide what we build,” she said. The upgrade will be funded through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grant, with Reay Park receiving $368,940.

Hunter mums focus on fresh Lauren Branson says if there is one silver-lining to come out of a global pandemic, it’s that more people are gravitating toward consuming natural produce. As Chief Executive of Your Food Collective, the passionate foodie believes returning to sourcing fresh local produce will not only be a winwin for buyers and sellers, but also for the environment, our bodies and our tastebuds. As a mother-of-five young children, Lauren says feeding a family nutritious and wholesome food every meal should be as simple as opening a box. After witnessing bushfires and drought threatening a shortage of fresh produce last season, Lauren and her cousin Cara Cooper have launched their business aimed at acting as a link between growers and dinner plates. “With COVID more people are now staying in their homes and ordering online,” she says. “It’s more important than ever to get fresh produce from local growers into homes, rather than supermarket bags filled with food that is not remotely fresh or nutritious.” Your Food Collective is a Newcastle-based online food distributer delivering fresh, local produce to the Sydney and Newcastle region. “We are very lucky here in Newcastle, we are surrounded by producers who can supply us with beautiful fresh food all grown within 200 kilometres of our home base,” Lauren says. “Our beef and lamb come from Scone, our fruit and veg from Hunter and Peats Ridge, and our local cafes and restaurants supply things like our curry pastes, breads and ready-

Their motivation is to repair what they say is a catastrophe. “Our food system is completely broken,” Lauren says. “We need to make changes and we’re trying to drive that. This is a massive issue. “Our population is set to double by 2050 which means our food produce will need to double as well, but how do we sustain that?” Lauren believes that buying from local producers is a good start. “It means farmers in the region can survive, with 80 cents from every dollar returning to the farm,” she says. “If you buy from a grocery store it’s only 20 cents in every dollar. “In the last five years we’ve lost 25% of small to medium sized farms because no one pays what they’re worth. “Banana producers in the region can travel down to the Central Coast to sell their fruit and by the time they get there they’ll get more for the cardboard box.” She adds buying local also means eating fresher. “At the moment 90% of our supermarkets are filled with packaged goods that are not fresh and have no flavour,” she says. “Food now is picked well before it’s ripe, then ripened in storage and then eaten, without the taste it was meant to have. “In fact, the average food item on our grocery shelves has travelled further than most families go on holidays each year.” - Rebecca Riddle

Grandma writes children's book to help explain coronavirus When Janice McKay’s grandchildren started asking her why COVID-19 meant they could no longer have their regular visits, the clinical psychologist decided to write them a book to explain it. The pair, now aged eight and 10, had been coming to grandma’s Lake Macquarie home on a Monday and Tuesday since they were babies. However, hearing words like ‘coronavirus’, ‘social-distancing’ and ‘self-quarantine’ meant grandma could only talk via Zoom. Villony Virus Comes to Town was born out of Janice’s sadness at having to move their regular games of Snakes and Ladders to a screen. “I struggled to explain to my grandchildren the reasons why they could no longer come to my home,” Janice said. “I felt heartbroken and I thought the best way to explain the situation was to write a book for them.” In her 26-page children’s book, Janice attempts

to explain a global pandemic to children aged between five and 11. Her strategies and ideas have been brought to life with the help of Belmont-based illustrator Jerram Fahey’s bold characters in bright primary colours. While a creepy main character named Villony Virus is attempting to take over the town with its soldiers that can jump 1.5 metres and prefer older adults, there are some clever scientists in the book who are working hard to find a vaccine that will hopefully bring about a happy ending. Janice says the book is filled with subtle messages aimed at opening the channels of communication surrounding COVID-19. “The book provides children with some education about a pandemic and helps children realise that others may feel the same as they do,” she said.

Festival shifts to summer Michelle Fleming remembers dancing on stage at the Mattara Festival when she was just a child, covered in glitter and home-made costumes, concentrating on completing the choreography without a mistake. She continued the annual tradition of performing at the 10-day festival for many years to come. Then, in 2004, she launched her own dance studio, Bodyrock Dance Studio, and took her first group of dancers through their moves on the same assembled stage. Now, in what would have been the festival’s 59th year, the event has sadly been cancelled due to COVID-19. Mattara Festival organiser Kim Hillery said the committee was saddened to abandon its annual tradition. “As you can imagine, the Mattara Committee has struggled with the major decisions to cancel or go ahead in hope,” she said.

“It’s so hard to believe we are still going through this terrible time six months later.” As the oldest festival in the Hunter Region, the Mattara Festival has been showcasing local talent since 1961. Originally located at Civic Park, the festival was moved to the Newcastle foreshore precinct in 2006, and again three years ago to Wallsend Park, making way for the Supercars championship. Despite her fondness for its new home among the trees, Ms Hillary admits she’s hoping to move to higher ground in 2021 after flooding forced the cancellation of some rides and attractions last year. “We’re hoping to move to the upper reserve,” she said. “It’s not a big move, but it has to work for all the other council activities there too.” Ms Hillary said the iconic festival had been the launchpad of many

Great time to plant your veggie garden Spring is a great time to plant a vegetable garden. Dig in cow manure and an all-purpose plant food and wait a week before planting some of the latest release summer crops. There are so many different varieties of tomatoes available, including grafted Grosse Lissie and, more recently, the Tomato Truss Plum. I am guilty of not growing them, but any variety of vine grown tomato is the latest craze. The symmetrical trusses have consistent fruit uniformity and an excellent taste. Choosing which tomato to grow can be confusing as there are so many different varieties available. I prefer Sweet Bite, which are incredibly prolific, and Father Tom, which bears firm globeshaped fruit. These smaller tomatoes are favoured as they aren’t as prone to fruit fly attack. This year, Oasis Seedlings have released a Stir Fry range, as well as their lettuce varieties and cucumbers, and numerous chillis, capsicum and climbing beans, which can only be planted during warm weather.

I remember when my grandson took over my garden, planting watermelon, which completely took over. However, his joy when he found a melon under their leafy growth was well worth my roses stressing. Remembering this reminds me of when my three grandchildren wouldn’t let me squash the snails or put the grasshoppers to death. By now, newly pruned roses are producing new growth along with the warm weather. As I mentioned last week, keep a sharp eye out for aphids and, to prevent black spot, try a regular spraying of bi-carb soda mixed with pest oil fortnightly. If this preventative isn’t successful, spray with copper oxychloride. Note: healthy roses will fight off fungal disease and insect infestations such as scale. My suggestion is to fertilise with a different food each month, beginning with Sudden Impact, then, the following month, use Sulphate of Potash, dolomite after heavy rain, and then use Blood and Bone a month later.

A magical place of adventure The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox (Dixie Egerickx), a prickly and unloved 10-year-old girl, born in India to wealthy British parents.
