This week...
From the editor I think it’s fair to say I’ve not always had a super close relationship with my father. We have different personalities and approach certain things from a different angle, which led to quite a few disagreements, particularly when I was living at home. But, as I’ve grown older, I have been able to reflect on where he might have been coming from at times and we get along fine now. I’m sure this is a fairly common occurrence. While I know dad will admit he, like everyone, is not perfect, I do appreciate that he has been there to offer advice on work, sport, and life in general, while he often sends a morning text message to wish me a good day. We’re now able to enjoy the simple things together, like catching up for coffee or going for a bushwalk around the Central Coast. It has not always been easy, but we have, overall, led a privileged life compared to some other Australian families. As the nation prepares to celebrate Father’s Day in a little over a week’s time (Sunday 6 September), we’ve featured the journey of Fletcher-based father of five, Charles Gashufi. Two of Charles’ children, John and Charlotte, pay tribute to the sacrifices their father made to give them a better life on pages 9 and 10.

The Altar Boys launches amid renewed calls for answers The launch of an explosive new book in Newcastle has marked the start of fresh calls for a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of whistle-blowing Hunter priest, Father Glen Walsh. Two dozen survivors, their families and supporters gathered
before the backdrop of Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hamilton, last week, pledging to continue to fight for what they called “an overdue need for change”. The crowd was joined by Greens Senator David Shoebridge, who said The Altar Boys, written by Suzanne
Smith, had raised questions about the treatment Father Walsh was subjected to before his suicide. Father Walsh took his own life in November 2017, two weeks before he was due to appear as a Crown prosecution witness in the case against Archbishop Philip Wilson, who was, at the time, the highestranking Catholic convicted of child sex abuse in the world. The Altar Boys includes neverbefore published reports, emails and police statements regarding the alleged decades-long cover-up of clerical abuse in the MaitlandNewcastle diocese. Ms Smith said she believed Father Walsh was bullied and readers should start by asking why. “There are 400,000 priests in the world – why did Glen Walsh get an invitation to a meeting with the Pope and what was discussed there?” she said. “If one Catholic priest stands up against the church, we need to know
what happens to them, we need to ask the questions.” Ms Smith, a six-time Walkley Award-winning investigative reporter, said her book was a tribute to her friend and long-time colleague Steven Alward. “I made arrangements to meet with my friend Steven, he had some things to tell me, but, before we met up, he’d suicided,” she said. “The book is about that journey – to try and find out what happened, to fulfil that pact I had with my friend. “This needs to be investigated. I covered the issue for eight years for [ABC program] Lateline, I’d done 40 stories on this diocese, it’s been a harrowing journey. “I wonder about why this area had such an epidemic. “I think I’ve made the argument in the book. “What’s the recipe for an epidemic of child sexual abuse, clerical sexual abuse, and it’s all here. Hairdressers adding domestic violence training to skillset

Chelsea Fleming says being an “ear” is part of her role as a hairdresser. Having styled, coloured and brushed thousands of manes during her eight years in the role, the Koko Hairdressing Salon Manager says additional training in domestic violence awareness would add to her skill set. Chelsea and her team are among hundreds
of hairdressers in the Hunter being offered training about the warning signs and dynamics of domestic and family violence as part of an innovative approach to raising community awareness and supporting victim-survivors. Having the tools to assist clients is particularly beneficial to new staff, Chelsea says. “I think training on women facing domestic violence is definitely needed in our industry as our clients have a level of trust with us and generally tell us things they may not even be comfortable telling others,” she says. “We are an ear for them to vent a lot of the time and we aren’t here to judge them. “I think it would especially be good for the younger hairdressers or apprentices as they would then have the tools on how to respond. “I would have loved to have this sort of training when I was an apprentice as I wouldn’t have known how to handle these situations.” Newcastle-based Australian Hairdressing Council Chief Executive, Sandy Chong, who is also the owner of Suki Hairdressing, says hairdressers often listen to the problems of their

clients and offer a sympathetic ear. “It comes with the job, so the workshops can help them know what to do if a client does disclose to them that they are experiencing domestic violence,” she says. “I would hope for at least 1,000 Hunter hairdressers to take up the opportunity to attend these workshops. “Ninety-five per cent of our industry is female so there’s a fair chance we have victims within our own workplaces.” The series of seven workshops in the Hunter will be managed by the Co-operative Legal Service Delivery (CLSD) program, funded by Legal Aid NSW. Hairdressers will hear directly from local domestic and family violence experts at the training workshops to understand the types of support that can help those affected by domestic and family violence. Family appreciates father’s sacrifices Charles Gashufi is a dad like no other. With the nation set to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday 6 September, this father of five has made sacrifices many of us would find hard to
comprehend. Charles and his wife Christiane had made a life for themselves in the Democratic Republic of the Congo – a war-torn country located in Central Africa.
But, in 2005, the family was forced to disband, with Charles fleeing to Burundi in East Africa with his disabled daughter Llana for treatment, while being faced with the additional task of trying to set up a life free from war for his family. It left Christiane to manage newborn baby John, daughter Charlotte, and sons Chris and Moses by herself. Their time apart was challenging; at times they didn’t even know where Charles was. After searching for their father, the family was finally reunited in 2007 in a refugee camp in Burundi. They lived there for 11 years. “Our life in Burundi was bad,” 22-year-old Charlotte said. “We couldn’t go to school as we wanted, we couldn’t eat when we wanted, life was so hard, so hard. “There was fighting and war in the Congo, there was no peace until now.” The family was unable to apply for refugee status due to regulations that determined they did not qualify because of Llana’s disability. Sadly, Llana passed away in 2017. A year later, the family arrived in Australia. Continued on page 10

Offering the gift of a new life to his family is something he is very proud of. “Africa was bad,” he said. “The government here is clever and looks after its people – now I have 50 to 80 years of life to enjoy. “I can learn English, whereas in Africa, we had no money, there was no school.” The family now lives in your typical Australian household in Fletcher, and the love Charles’ children have for the life their dad created for them is easy to see. “He is the only one who was involved in us coming here, he made a big sacrifice for us to come here to Australia, which is why we must respect him as a dad,” Charlotte said. “He likes when we talk to each other as a family or sit and
eat together or watch a movie together.” Fifteen-year-old John said his father simply wanted to give his family a better life. “It was very good because many people didn’t have a chance to come with all of their family,” he said. “He loves to work hard, and he loves us to work hard too, and he loves to make sure our family is happy and having a better life.” Despite the family’s tumultuous history, Charles just wants the best for their future. The family has been assisted by various local agencies since arriving in Australia, including CatholicCare. Through its Refugee Support Program, the family is learning English and receiving help to gain access to education and employment. - Emma Murphy

news Speechless: giving a voice to a unique disability For many of us, communicating with others comes as second nature. We talk, text, phone, and write. But what if we couldn’t? For 1.2 million Australians, that’s a reality. They are living with a communication disability, which can affect relationships, employment, education, and social inclusion. People like Newcastle local Grant McIntyre, who, after a battle with throat cancer, endured a laryngectomy, which essentially involved having his oesophagus and voice box removed. “It’s frustrating to not be able to speak in an instant,” he said. “I have an app that I use that converts text into speech, but it takes time to type in the words you want to convey, so sometimes a moment has passed and what you wanted to
say is no longer relevant. “Even simple things like getting petrol and telling the cashier what pump number you are at is a challenge. “My wife and kids are really good at understanding what I’m trying to say, I use a lot of hand gestures and try and mouth words so people can try and read my lips, but that is difficult for people to do. “I have pretty good facial expressions and that sometimes gets my point across.” Speech Pathology Australia is putting a spotlight on this disability during Speech Pathology Week, which goes from Sunday 23 to Saturday 29 August. The goal for the week remains the same – to increase the understanding of communication disabilities, giving

millions of Australians the ability to seek the support they need to be communicating with confidence. For some people, like Grant, their communication disability means they get their message across through other means, such as electronic voice output devices, word-based or picture-based communication boards. But finding employment with this challenge can be hard. Research from the Australian
Bureau of Statistics shows only 38% of people with communication disabilities participate in the workforce. “People with communication disability are at a disadvantage when it comes to employment, education and independence,” Speech Pathology Australia President Tim Kittel said. “Better communication leads to a better life.” - Emma Murphy

Council gives green light to major project at Morisset A major project that aims to create an iconic family, tourism, cultural and event space at Morisset has secured development approval from Lake Macquarie City Council. Newcastle-based developer Winarch Capital announced last week its Cedar Mill project will move to the development stage amid plans to open on the old Morisset Country
Club site in September 2021. Winarch Founder Paul Lambess says its goal has always been to create a space that the entire community can use. “We submitted six separate development applications and five have now been approved,” he says. “These include a lifestyle village to be built by Ingenia, featuring
427 dwellings; a tourist park, with capacity for 252 camp sites and 48 cabins; restaurant; a café; and Australia’s largest water splash pad.” The sixth development – for the event space – is currently on track. Winarch states it is working alongside Transport for NSW to finetune modelling in a bid to “achieve a positive outcome”. Stage 1 of the project will see a $10 million refurbishment of the existing club house, which will be transformed to include a provedore market, an indoor-outdoor café with capacity for 336 people, a restaurant, and a function room with capacity for 120 people. It is expected to span across five hectares – four of which are gardens, including a children’s maze – while fresh produce will be grown on site to be used in the café and restaurant. Cedar Mill General Manager Kyle McKendry says the community space will be the perfect venue for family gatherings, weddings,
entertainment, and community events. “There will be a petting zoo, outdoor play area and, of course, the $2 million water splash pad, which the kids will love,” he says. “Once we are up and running, we will also look to develop educational experiences by engaging with the local schools to tour and participate in activities in the gardens.” The benefits of the project will also flow beyond the site’s boundaries, with a $5 million upgrade to the Dora Street/ Mandalong Road roundabout, which will move from a single lane to dual carriageway. Lake Macquarie Economic Development Company, Dantia, has calculated that, based on the entire precinct investment value of $235 million, a total of 1,224 jobs will be created during construction and a further 475 permanent jobs will be supported once operational. Serves 1 90g ramen noodles 1 x 10g sachet vegan dashi (we use kombu shiitake dashi, found at specialty grocers and delis) 250ml (1 cup) vegetable stock 1 Tbsp miso paste 8–10 snow peas, trimmed 45g (1/2 cup) sliced shiitake mushrooms 40g (1/2 cup) shimeji mushrooms (or any other variety) 1 large spring onion, finely chopped 1 tsp chilli and garlic paste (jar variety from the supermarket) 1 baby bok choy, trimmed, sliced lengthways Toppings (optional) Soft-boiled egg Coriander leaves Bean sprouts A drizzle of sesame oil Sesame seeds A wedge of lime
Cook the ramen noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain and set aside. Next, add the dashi to 250ml (1 cup) of water and whisk with a fork until dissolved. Pour into a saucepan, add the stock and miso paste and place over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, mixing well with a wooden spoon to ensure the miso paste is fully dissolved. Taste and, if you find it too salty, add an extra 3 tablespoons of water. Add the snow peas, mushrooms, spring onion and chilli and garlic paste to the broth and simmer for 3–4 minutes until the snow peas are tender-crisp and the mushrooms have softened a little. Stir in the bok choy and cook until just wilted. Pop the noodles into a bowl and pour the broth and veggies over the top. Serve with the desired toppings.

Combine the vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil and white sugar in a small bowl. Set aside. Cook the noodles in boiling water for 2–3 minutes until tender. Rinse under cold water and drain well. Combine the noodles in a large bowl with the dressing, coriander, and spring onions. Toss to combine and transfer to a serving plate. 13

Farm kids share their stories It’s been a tough year but, for our farmers, there’s been much more than just COVID-19 to cope with. Eleven-year-old Campbell Evans and his younger brother Dougal may be children, but living on a farm at Vacy in the Hunter Valley means they have experienced more than others their age. “With the drought, it was really hard because all the dams went down really quickly and we had to go and feed our animals with grain and hay, which there wasn’t much of – the paddocks were dry,” Campbell said. Bushfires, pests, drought, and flood are just a few of the challenges farming families face, and it’s in these times children can feel like they are uninformed and unheard. Hunter Local Land Services, Hunter Region Landcare Network and Mid Coast 2 Tops Landcare Connection have teamed up to change that, creating the ‘Farm Force’ program. It provides children from the Hunter Region
with a chance to have a voice through the creation of a series of books addressing these issues that are written and illustrated by local kids, which will then be used as a resource for the local community. Hunter LLS Community Engagement Officer, Daniel Trudgeon, said the first of the book series will focus on local experiences of the recent bushfire season. “Last summer’s bushfires were the most severe on record as they affected so many parts of our region and across NSW,” Daniel said. “This will make them a ‘force’ to be reckoned with as they are better equipped to help their families prepare for future events. “We want rural kids to reflect on past experiences, learn about the importance of good bushfire preparedness, and recognise how communities come together to support each other in times of crisis.” It’s hoped creating the books will enable the children to help their families prepare both now,

and in the future, when they become the next generation of property managers. “I reckon it will be good to tell other people how it is to live on a farm while we’re battling through hard things like fire and drought and tell them how it feels,” Campbell said. “It’s great living on a farm – even though there are tough times, you just have to get through them,” Dougal added. Susie Porter stars in new drama series Susie Porter has played many different characters in her 25-year acting career, some that could be described as dark, some naughty, a few cheeky and even saucy. For her latest part, the Newcastle-born beauty is taking on the role of a minesweeper in the SBS Australian drama series Hungry Ghosts. After stumbling on a hidden tomb in Vietnam on the eve of the annual Hungry Ghost Festival, a vengeful spirit is released by NGO worker Catherine Taylor (played by Porter) during a mine-clearing operation. The unsettled spirit then finds its way to the Vietnamese Australian community in Melbourne, where it wreaks havoc until the past is reconciled. Despite its ethereal title, Porter says the series is more than just a ghost tale. “It’s not all dark,” she says. “It’s also quite funny in lots of ways.” Porter admits it was the script’s uniqueness that she was drawn to. “I was attracted to the job because I’d never seen or read anything like it on, or for, Australian television before,” she says. “And there’s also so many great people involved in it.” Porter’s co-workers on the series include Bryan Brown, Justine Clarke, Gary Sweet, Jillian Nguyen, and Catherine Van-Davies. As one of the Hunter’s most talented exports, attending both Newcastle Grammar School and the University of Newcastle, Porter has been widely acknowledged and recognised by her peers and the public for her various challenging roles. She believes her placing within the craft was cemented through her role on prison drama Wentworth. “I got to change so much over
the four seasons,” she says. “The length of time and the different range of emotions I got to explore was a real highlight for me.” Exploring the characters she chooses to play in great depth is a common trait of the diverse actor, something she admits both attracts and repels her. “I’m a massive fan of true crime,” she says. “I can’t help myself; I watch every forensic show I can get my hands on. “I’m fascinated by human beings. “Take all the judgements away and we really are all capable of anything. “There’s darkness in the human condition. People don’t want to admit that but just look at what we’re capable of.” Her characters, therefore, are not

so much “dark” as “realistic”. “That’s the reality of life,” Porter says. “A lot of stuff is smoke and mirrors, the advertising and the media, the way a story is told can be far from reality.” From prison to puberty and puzzling, Porter’s dream role is one that would require a new reality. “I’d like to play a nun,” she says. “I don’t think I’ve played a nun, so that would be good.”
With little to no exposure to religion, it is “exploring the extremes” that fascinates her. “I think it’s because they’re interesting to play and explore,” she says. “I’m interested in any role that you earn, a role you have to research and learn something about.” Hungry Ghosts is on SBS from 9.30pm tonight (Thursday 27 August). - Rebecca Riddle

participants can exhibit any media – paintings, drawings, sculptures, clay – as long as it is no bigger than 90 centimetres in any direction.” All participants will receive a certificate of participation, while an independent judge will be appointed by Finite Gallery. All entries with entry form and entry fee must be submitted either during gallery hours or by arrangement before Sunday 6 September. No late entries will be accepted. Burst of colour after cold, wet winter I can’t resist writing a little prematurely about spring as I noticed this morning my cream clivias are all budding and ready to burst open into flower. I love the tall stems they produce with heads of beautiful lily-like flowers. Mine are creamyyellow but many gardeners have the bright orange varieties, which add a blaze of colour to the spring garden (keep in mind that they dislike the full sun in summer).

Although we have gone through a cold period, it will be spring in four days. Let’s think spring and the jobs which need to be done during September. Lawns should have been weeded, ready for fertilising – this year, a light application of top dressing would be beneficial, remembering to fertilise beforehand. Lawn fertilising should only be done if you have begun mowing the grass, otherwise, it is wasted and not absorbed by growing grass. Since many gardeners have moved into maintenance-free gardens, some of the loveliest spring shrubs and flowers aren’t being planted. I find this sad as many bulbs and shrubs herald the beginning of spring. One such shrub is the azalea – their colour is magic. Sure, they need a little care as they are prone to spider mite, which, trust me, can be controlled. Azaleas should only be pruned lightly, then fed carefully – potted plants shouldn’t be given azalea food as it may burn. Azaleas have shallow surface roots. Apply peat moss over the root’s surface to prevent

drying out during summer. One of my favourite shrubs, the gardenia, are beginning to bud. It is important to keep them watered regularly as they stress and drop yellow leaves if they are thirsty or lacking in iron. Fertilise with cow manure, using a pelletted fertiliser on container specimens plants, adding peat moss around the root surface, which holds moisture and increases iron. Houseplants can be repotted during September and October. Clean their leaves, freshen their potting mix, and use a weekly fertiliser such as Flourish Green and Growth. By now, if your roses have been pruned, they will be shooting new growth. Beware of aphids attacking new growth and spray with pyrethrum; if they are too invasive, spray with a contact spray such a Malathon. Welcome to spring.
