From the editor Face masks have been a divisive topic over the past few weeks. Some attention-seekers in Melbourne are hitting the headlines as they argue with police and businesses over their right not to wear one in public. One post doing the rounds on social media shows an anti-masker, aptly-named ‘Karen from Bunnings’, confronting staff about the mandatory use of face coverings before sharing a video of her burning face masks in a fire pit. The flood of media coverage on antimaskers again begs the question: why make stupid people famous? This is a fair question, especially when the overwhelming majority do the right thing. Australia is, of course, a free country and people have the right to express their opinion, but it is concerning how dangerous the spread of misinformation can be. We spoke to Hunter General Practitioners Association Secretary, Dr Lee Fong, and a spokesperson from NSW Health this week to share some information about when, where, and why you should wear a face mask. news Marine Rescue primed to call Stockton home After five years without a permanent home, Marine Rescue Newcastle may have found a long-term base on the Stockton foreshore. The volunteer seafaring group is hoping its vessels will be moored permanently on a parcel of Crown Land, managed by the City of Newcastle. The lease on the land is pending council approval next month. Marine Rescue is then planning to build a command post a few metres from South Stockton boat ramp at an estimated cost of $1 million. The site would offer views to Nobbys to the south east, Dyke Point to the west, and Walsh Point to the north. The new headquarters will be
funded by the State Government and maintained by Marine Rescue Newcastle for the duration of its 21-year lease. Commissioner at Marine Rescue NSW, Stacey Tannos, said having a permanent home offered many benefits. “Our members are thrilled that they will have a permanent new home right on the waterfront,” he said. “This is very welcome news, coming just weeks after the delivery of the unit’s new $535,000 rescue vessel. “The base will feature the latest marine radio communications technology and equipment. “Having the unit’s new rescue vessel right in front of the base will also improve crews’ response times

Suburb’s $2 million overhaul A new investment will transform conditions for pedestrians and motorists in Wallsend. City of Newcastle is awarding $2 million to the suburb’s local centre while opening the conversation on its long-term masterplan. Council staff will consult the Wallsend community over the next month on local improvements ahead of a project to replace the busy Kokera/Cowper Street roundabout with traffic lights. A joint public domain-flood mitigation program over the next 12 months will also see the Boscawen and Nelson Street bridges replaced to facilitate widening and naturalisation of the Hunter Waterowned Ironbark Creek channel. Flood mitigation work will also be completed on the channel within Wallsend Park, along with the completion of a new shared
pedestrian and cycle path. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the city’s local centres program would increase safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and improve the overall look and appeal of commercial centres. “As we have shown with upgrades to the Beresfield and Carrington town centres, the work will significantly improve the appeal of Wallsend with high-quality infrastructure, such as new seating, street trees and landscaping,� she said. “Wallsend is a suburb brimming with history and character, which is why it’s so important we work with the community to determine what’s important as we make long-term improvements in the area.� Visit newcastle.nsw.gov.au to provide feedback on the Wallsend upgrades.

New recruit determined Family and Children’s Law Solicitor Emily Ostler wants the community to know she is here to make a difference and give them a voice. This causes a lot of problems, such as matters being brought back to Court, for contraventions or new Orders, which otherwise would have never come back to Court. This further clogs up our already extremely overcrowded Newcastle Registry and adds to the pressure and stress of our overworked Judges.” Ms Ostler says that becoming a part of The Law Office of Conrad Curry’s team has been “a really enjoyable” experience. In her spare time, she likes to go out for coffee, cook, watch reality TV and revel in her love of Harry Potter. news Op shop volunteer has a vision of giving back When Sue Smedley’s parents passed away two years ago, she was at a loss as to what to do with their spectacles. The classic 70’s big-rimmed pair her mum wore, and the “very ugly” pair her father adorned for years, were among a handful of others left accumulating dust. The mother-of-three said she had always believed that “what goes around comes around”, so she began researching a way to put the prescription glasses to good use. Through volunteering at the Warners Bay Allira House Op Shop, Sue found a new home, not only for her own collection of specs but for the many donated to the charity. Allira House Op Shop sells clothing, footwear and household
items to raise funds to support a refuge for women and children fleeing domestic violence situations. “We can’t sell prescription glasses at the op shop,” Sue said. “But we can collect them and pass them on to be reused somewhere else.” Sue’s collection of spectacles has become a cog in a chain of giving. “I drop them at Chapman’s Optometrists and they give them to the Lions Club, and then they make their way to Mercy Ships,” she said. The Optometrist and the Lions Club are both based in Warners Bay. Mercy Ships is an international charity offering free medical treatment to people in developing countries by trained medical staff

Wearing a face mask should be the norm, Hunter doctor says
Should I wear a face mask? That’s a question many Hunter residents have no doubt asked themselves during another spike in COVID-19 cases across the state. So, Newcastle Weekly spoke to Hunter General Practitioners Association Secretary, Dr Lee Fong, and a spokesperson from NSW Health to share some information about when, where and why you should wear a face mask. The NSW Health spokesperson advises that people should consider wearing a face mask in situations where it is difficult to maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres. Wearing a mask can help protect you and those around you if you are in an area with community
transmission and physical distancing is not possible, like on public transport. “In the Hunter, we’ve had a very good run for many weeks, but it now looks like community transmission is likely to increase in our region,” Dr Fong said. “In places like shopping centres, supermarkets, buses and trams, wearing a face mask is looking like a great idea, both to protect the community and ourselves. “Remember – even if you or the person next to you is feeling perfectly well, you or your neighbour might have COVID-19 but be presymptomatic (or may even remain entirely asymptomatic) but still spreading COVID-19. “That’s why it’s important to wear a face mask even if you’re feeling completely well.” In terms of what face masks to wear, Dr Fong said “any face covering is better than nothing”. If you cannot purchase face masks, there are even guides, online resources and sewing patterns to make your own. Dr Fong added it “would be great if everybody would make their own decision to wear a face
mask when leaving home”. “We are going to have to live with COVID-19 for many months to come – perhaps even years – and so the sooner we make wearing a face mask the cultural norm, the better for everybody,” he said. “However, I suspect it will take mandatory face mask wearing before most of us will take that step.” The NSW Health spokesperson added that it was important to wear and take off a mask properly. When putting on a mask, you must wash or sanitise your hands before putting it on. Make sure it covers your nose and mouth and fits snugly under your chin, over the bridge of your nose and against the sides of your face. It is also suggested that you do not touch it while it’s on and do not let it hang around your neck or under your nose. When taking off a face mask, you should also wash and sanitise your hands and handle the mask by the ear loops or ties. - Elizabeth Symington

news Gallery’s plan to expand An amended development application aims to turn the Newcastle Art Gallery into a major drawcard for the city. The planned expansion will see the building extended east along Darby Street and Queen Street with a glass façade, a street-level café and retail shop, with overall exhibition space expanded by 250%. The additional exhibition space has, in part, been created by the removal of two shopfronts that were previously proposed in the approved DA. Newcastle Art Gallery Director Lauretta Morton said the redeveloped gallery would help to attract even more visitors. “As Australia’s first purposebuilt regional gallery, Newcastle is custodian to a nationally-recognised, permanent collection of over 7,000 works of art, providing a time capsule
of Australian art dating back to the earliest days of Newcastle more than 200 years ago,” Ms Morton said. “The long-awaited expansion of the gallery, which our foundation, society and the community have worked tirelessly towards, will offer the ability to share more of the city’s collection, displaying works of art of local, national and international importance for visitors to view and enjoy. “This makes the gallery one of the city’s biggest cultural assets, located in the heart of the city centre’s revitalisation, directly across from the new 5-star Kingsley Hotel.” Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the NSW Government had previously endorsed the project in its Cultural Infrastructure Plan 2025, which identified the Newcastle Art Gallery redevelopment as a regional opportunity. “An expanded Newcastle Art

revenue would be more than $1 million, with 14,116 additional local visitors and tourists exploring what the gallery and the city has to offer.” City of Newcastle has committed more than $10 million to the project and, to date, invested $3.6 million towards the art gallery expansion. Based on a 2019 quantity survey, $35.6 million is required to complete construction.

Stockton club welcomes $200,000 for upgrades Stockton Surf Life Saving Club will welcome some much-needed upgrades this year, thanks to more than $200,000 in state government funding. The historic club, formed in 1908, is one of 26 across the state that will share in $4 million, which will go towards upgrades, restorations or construction of club facilities. Club president Callan Nickerson said the funds would be used to upgrade internal areas of the clubhouse that was built in 1979. “We’ll upgrade the toilets and change-rooms downstairs as well as the upstairs hallway and flooring,” he said. “The funding will also mean the creation of an education space we’ll be able to use for training that has
a smartboard, television, video and conference capabilities. “We’ll also be able to open up our doors to be used by members of the community if needed.” Despite the club increasing in membership numbers from 100 to 500 since its inception, the historic building has remained largely untouched, Mr Nickerson said. “It was built in the 1970s,” he said. “They didn’t factor in disability access back then, [so] it’s definitely overdue.” Upgrades to the Stockton Surf Life Saving Club will be sent to City of Newcastle in the coming weeks, with works expected to begin in September and be completed by December. - Rebecca Riddle

Winter has well and truly arrived – warm up with this delicious recipe of Pappardelle with Mediterranean lamb stew. Recipe and image courtesy of Australian Lamb | australianlamb.com.au Serves 4 Ingredients:
Method:
800g lamb forequarter chops (you can also use lamb leg or shoulder)
Season the chops with salt and pepper and brown both sides in a hot casserole dish with olive oil. Remove and set aside.
1 onion, diced 1 carrot, diced

2 garlic cloves, chopped 1 bay leaf 100g kalamata olives, sliced 1 tsp smokey paprika 1 Tbsp brown sugar 50g small mushrooms, sliced 400g can of diced tomatoes 700ml beef stock
Using the same dish, add the onion, carrot, garlic and bay leaf and cook for 2 minutes, stirring. Add the browned lamb, olives, paprika, sugar, mushrooms, tomato and stock. Check seasoning, reduce heat to low and simmer for 2 hours. Cook the pappardelle as per packet instructions. Serve with the stew, fresh basil and parmesan.

New look for historic theatre A new stage has been set for performing arts in Lake Macquarie, with an upgrade to the historic Rathmines Theatre now complete. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser was joined by Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper at Rathmines Theatre last Friday for a walkthrough of the theatre following a $3.3 million refurbishment. Jointly funded by the NSW Government through its Stronger Countries Community Fund and Lake Macquarie City Council, the upgrade included an internal fit-out, new bathrooms, new audio-visual equipment, disabled parking, an accessible ramp and landscaping, renewing the facility inside and out. Cr Fraser said the project had given the historic building a new lease of life. “The refreshed facility will help to reinvigorate the cultural scene in western Lake Macquarie and will deliver significant economic benefits to the area,” Cr Fraser said. “This state-of-the-art facility offers a place for performers to take centre stage and share their talents with the community. “It is also home to the Heritage Centre, a place

A podcast for women on the go has celebrated its first anniversary by releasing its fourth season. Alana Nixon and Laura Jackel, who created the Oversubscribed podcast for women hell-bent on squeezing the most out of life, released the new season this month. Since its launch in July 2019, the pair have recorded 30 episodes and overseen nearly 18,000 unique downloads from around the world. The first episode of season four was dedicated to influential women of colour and included an interview with Newcastle-based Jamaican woman, Raquel James-Wright. “We were inspired by the #sharethemic campaign on Instagram, where prominent white female celebrities like Julia Roberts handed over their social media accounts to women of colour,” Laura said.
“We might not have a Hollywood A-lister following to ‘share the mic’ with but, in the process of educating ourselves, we decided to dedicate episode one to celebrating the many inspiring women of colour, including our guest, Raquel James-Wright.” Other season four guests include pro surfer Philippa Anderson, Mamamia senior news writer Gemma Bath and best-selling author and self-made millionaire, Denise Duffield-Thomas. The duo will launch season five later in the year and are already looking for businesses wishing to target women over 30 for an exciting collaboration. Spring promises a burst of colour Okay readers, I am a little early to write the August job column, but the arrival of August means spring is only four weeks away and, this year, after cold and heavy coastal rains, we will all be looking forward to a burst of colour, which is already happening. Have you noticed the deciduous magnolias in full bloom? Magnolia soulangeana bears the large pink and white tulip-shaped flowers, which look fabulous until strong winds cause the flowers to fall. It is amazing how plants know the soil is beginning to warm deep down, which encourages blossoms and new leaves to begin budding during August, ready for spring. I won’t be surprised, however, if winter conditions last a little longer, so there is still plenty of time to complete those winter jobs, particularly pruning – remember, though, not to prune spring flowering trees and shrubs until after they flower. Other August jobs include deadheading camellias, azaleas, daffodils and other bulbs as they finish flowering. Probably one of the most important jobs in
early August is to complete rose pruning and fertilising – if you haven’t yet pruned and are waiting for the last frosts, I think the rain has kept the frost away this year and it is safe to now prune. I am about to prune my bed of standard ‘Ellenas’, then spray with Lime Sulphur and fertilise each rose with a full bucketful of poultry manure. Yes, a full bucket – one bag will probably be enough for three roses. Don’t use a pelleted product as it will release slowly. Then, three weeks later, give each rose a handful of rose food. Thereafter, we will continue a monthly feed such as Sudden Impact, dolomite, sulphate of potash or even blood and bone. These hints apply to ground-grown roses. Potted plants should be fed with Sudden Impact. Geraniums can be tidied now, remembering it is difficult to achieve the perfection of those beautiful European window boxes because our humid climate causes fungal disease and rust. Regular pruning and feeding will improve flowering quality.

Here’s a tip: plant in a good quality potting mix, such as Martins Premiums Mix, which contains nine months slow release fertiliser, and fertilise each week with Flourish. It is far too early to fertilise lawns – wait until the grass is actively growing, spray the bindiis and broadleaf weeds early in the morning on a fi ne warm day, giving the chemical six hours to work. One of the main August jobs is maintenance of citrus. Ground-grown citrus should be fed with poultry manure and citrus food out under the drip line – water the soil before and after application. Container-grown citrus should be fed with care. Never feed with citrus food as this will cause leaf drop.
