This week... From the editor Who said sport or exercise was good for you? After just two games of a shortened soccer season, I went to see the physio and left in a knee brace, which will be attached to my right leg for the next six to eight weeks. A lack of fitness compared to previous years, a bit of bad luck and old age (I am 31 in December!) has left me hobbling around for the time-being. Lesson learned, and I’ll be trying my absolute best to come back much stronger once the brace comes off. To follow a similar train of thought to some earlier columns, the COVID-19 pandemic has, like many other small businesses, left us slightly hobbled. You’ll have no doubt noticed the magazine is currently smaller in size than it was pre-COVID, and this varies a bit week-to-week. There is also the unfortunate absence of the TV Guide, which we are still getting phone calls about (some of these are still borderline abusive). I understand the frustration, but we will only be able to return the TV Guide once the owner deems it appropriate to do so. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this week’s magazine, which features foster mum Rachael Clancy on the cover, and continue to support us until our brace comes off. - Ben Murphy

Stepping into a hair salon to get a haircut. While it may seem like an everyday task to most people, for people living with a disability, it can be challenging to say the least. Maitland hairdresser Desiree McDonald wanted to change that. Inspired by her daughter, who has Cerebral Palsy, she opened a salon in 2017 dedicated to making the trip to the hairdressers that little bit easier. Word spread and Shear Abilities became the ‘go to’ salon for those in wheelchairs, while an impressive sensory room made it accommodating for children with Autism. “I wanted to help people in the community living with a disability and wanted people with children with Autism to have somewhere to go to have the same experience we all do,” Ms McDonald said. “I had a separate room, a sensory room for kids that fear haircuts and I also had a hoist that transported people from wheelchairs to a special basin that laid down.” While the salon was embraced by the special needs community, it wasn’t generating enough

income to remain viable three years later, meaning Ms McDonald was forced to make the devastating decision to close the salon earlier this year. “I calm them down by playing with their hair, whereas they can be resistant in a mainstream salon and the hairdresser will give them five minutes and turn them away because they aren’t sitting still,” Ms McDonald said. “I wasn’t charging a lot, I was probably not charging my worth.” And, it’s that special treatment, for no extra cost, that saw the business suffer. So, Ms McDonald is now hitting the road, taking her scissors with her as a mobile business. She’s been making special home visits to her regulars and some group homes. “It’s been great because the kids can’t go where it’s busy and people living with a disability are not as mobile, some don’t like the salon environment,” she said. “For some parents, if they don’t have me, they’re cutting their kid’s hair themselves.” Visit Shear Abilities on Facebook for more information. - Emma Murphy

news A cuppa and chat to combat loneliness at over 50’s club United by friendship and a good cuppa, Glenda Jayne and Robyn Thomsen are members of a unique club that has two requirements. You have to be over 50 and single. The Hunter Valley Over 50’s Singles Social Club has 60 members, all of which are looking for companionship, with many successfully finding it. Robyn joined the club back in 2002. It’s where she met her friend Neil, after her husband passed away. “I felt really lost and I saw an ad for the club and it was like someone was giving me a nudge, I thought that sound’s good and I’ve been there ever since,” she said. “As soon as Neil walked through the door, I introduced him to some other people, but he looks after me, he’s very compassionate so I’ve been lucky I suppose you might say.”
Both women acknowledge it can take great courage to take the leap of faith and join the club. “Some people are very nervous about coming forward,” Glenda said. “They’ve cut the ad out and stuck it on the fridge and, months later, they ring and it’s the best thing they’ve ever done, it changes their life.” The end of a relationship, a loss, or even retirement can be a massive life-changing event that can lead to loneliness. The women say both men and women join the club to help fill the void. “They say loneliness is one of the worst things a person can have and it’s just important to have friends and someone to talk to because, once you’ve retired, you’ve lost social contact at work and you can’t be at

When Natalie Orlando says “I doâ€? next March, it will be a dream come true. A dream she has had to postpone not once but twice because of COVID-19. After her May 2020 wedding date was disrupted by the global pandemic, Natalie and fiancĂŠ Jason Cashman decided to reschedule the big day to August. The 27-year-old said that she believed this was in the best interest of all 160 guests. “It just made sense to wait,â€? she said. “That’s our European family and they are coming from everywhere, inside Australia and overseas.â€? The Hunter Valley wedding was booked to take place in the garden of The Woodhouse Wollombi. “I was never into a traditional wedding with a ballgown and a church and priest,â€? she said. “We’ve always wanted our guests to come on an adventure with us. “And we’ve always loved the trees, the rolling hills and open space of that area, the gardens and the views, it’s just incredible, so, so beautiful, and we both love our wine.â€? Last month, however, the pair once again changed the date of
their betrothals, with much of the country fearing a second wave of the coronavirus. “I was devastated,� Natalie said. “We had paid for everything upfront, with the help of our parents, and I just didn’t know if we could pull it all off again.� The celebrant, along with the venue, flowers, photographer, food, and the band, all had to coordinate. “When it came to exchanging dates, every supplier had to match up,� she said. “And there are 17 different suppliers.� It comes after the pair faced more heartache in August last year when Natalie’s father-in-law lost his four-and-a-half-year battle against Motor Neurone Disease (MND). “It felt like this year nothing was going our way,� she said. Natalie and her husband-tobe are now planning to marry in March 2021. She added rescheduling a sixweek honeymoon in Europe had also proved to be a relatively easy process. “Now we’re just looking forward to when March comes around,� she said. “I’m sure it will be a perfect day and now we know we can get through anything together.� - Rebecca Riddle

Fostering hope: Rachael’s work makes a difference

A newborn baby in desperate need of a home, dropped off in the middle of the night. Rachael Clancy takes the baby in her arms, calls it her own and embraces it with love. That’s the life of the 32-year-old foster mum, and, while what she does is remarkable, she says she doesn’t know any different. “My family started fostering when I was 11 and, growing up, we always had kids coming into the family to stay permanently,” she said. “For me, it was a privilege to do that journey with the kids, I’ve always wanted to adopt a child later in life.” But that time came sooner than expected, when, at 28, a little girl found her way into Rachael’s heart and home.
“They were struggling to find a home for a beautiful little girl, so I took up the challenge, moved out of a share house with all of my friends and moved into a house on my own and started the life of being a mum,” she said. She later took in that little girl’s sister and, together, they made a life with Rachael for two-and-a-half years. “They did everything, cheer, dance, they were very happy and doing very well – one of them got to compete in nationals for cheerleading and then they were restored and left my care,” she said. “It’s very hard saying goodbye but it’s a blessing what you have been able to give them, and they always bring something to your life too. cover story From page 10 “I’ve had such a great experience of getting to have a supportive relationship with their biological parents, now they’ve returned home I still get to stay in contact with them and they still call me ‘mummy Rachael’ or ‘mumma bear.’” What makes Rachael’s journey so incredible is that she’s juggling life as a foster mother while studying for a degree in psychology. “It was obviously challenging on my own, but I don’t know any different and, to me, they were my everything,” she said. Her passion and drive stems from the rewards she gets from nurturing those in her care. “It’s amazing getting to see the transformation of a child who’s struggling and no-one could cope with, to getting them to the point where they show some sense of attachment to you, like the first time they want to run up and give you a
cuddle and it’s a genuine cuddle that they’ve missed you,” Rachael said. “That’s huge for a kid that’s been through what some of these children have been through and, to me, that’s worth more than anything. “I don’t care that I don’t have a husband yet or can’t work full-time because I’m doing this with the kids. “If this is what I’m brought into the world to do, that’s what I’m happy doing.” After witnessing so many children enter foster care, many with just the clothes on their back, Rachael took it upon herself to start an initiative that would give them a sense of self-worth and pride. “Growing up, I constantly saw kids coming to my family and they’d literally have a plastic bag with holes in it,” she said. “I saw kids coming into my care, with the same scenario 20 years later, and I thought: ‘These kids deserve better than this’ and it just
clicked one night.” So, Rachael started ‘Hope in a Suitcase,’ where she purchases suitcases and fills them with essential belongings before delivering them to agencies, the John Hunter Hospital and Maitland Hospital, ensuring no child goes into foster care without items to call their own. “I do it for the practical reasons, so they have clothes, toothbrushes, hairbrushes and toys, but I do it for the bigger message,” she said. “You can see a huge contrast between a kid turning up to a new family holding a plastic bag, to a child turning up with their own belongings and feeling they are worthy enough to have their own things. “I have a strong belief every child deserves to be loved and feel worthy and, if I can give a little bit of that to a child, I’m the lucky one.” - Emma Murphy

Dog Rescue Newcastle staff member Jesse Reinhard has made a special new four-legged friend called Harley. Despite his role being in marketing, Jesse and his team met the young pup earlier this month after he’d been abandoned by his owner, who was fleeing domestic violence. The volunteer-run group was alerted about Harley’s plight via email and, by the time they visited the lonely pooch, he was scared, hungry and vocal. Jesse says he thinks Harley is a “cattle dog, with a bit of Mastif and maybe some Staffy”.
He also believes he is about 14-months-old. Jesse’s first visit to the home was unsuccessful, with Harley using his voice to warn him off the property. The second time he entered the empty property, Jesse was joined by Amelia from Little Mischief K9 Training. The NSW Government has released plans for a new housing development to boost social housing supply and support vulnerable community members in the Hunter. The $6 million project at Fieldsend Street, East Maitland, includes nine one-bedroom units and nine two-bedroom units, with on-site parking and landscaping works. “This proposed redevelopment will transform the site that currently contains two aged
dwellings and a parcel of vacant land into 18 new homes, located near local shops and public transport to conveniently connect local residents with Maitland and Newcastle,” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Catherine Cusack, said. A development application for the project has been lodged with Maitland City Council and, if approved, construction is expected to start in mid-2021, with the first tenants expected to move in mid2022.
Government reveals site for replacement sports centre The preferred site for a new Lake Macquarie Sport and Recreation Centre has been announced by the NSW Government this week. The site has water access to Lake Eraring and is approximately one kilometre south-east of the former Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre. NSW Acting Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said fast-tracking a replacement centre for the Lake Macquarie community was a priority. “The new preferred site is larger, giving us the chance to offer a range of specialist programs and activities as well as continuing to provide watersports,” Mr Lee said. “We are committed to working with Lake Macquarie residents and community groups on delivering
a centre which meets their sport and recreation needs as well as protecting the unique local environment.” The NSW Government will now prepare to submit a Development Application and seek community feedback. Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper said he was pleased things were moving ahead on a replacement for Myuna Bay. “It’s also important that we find a way to accommodate the water ski club and make sure the original site is properly managed and rehabilitated,” he said. “My preference is that the site be added to Lake Macquarie State Recreation Area and managed by National Parks and Wildlife Service. “I’ll continue to work on those

issues but for now I acknowledge the work done by Minister Lee, the Office of Sport and Origin Energy in moving ahead with what I think will be a very good outcome for the local community.” The Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre was permanently closed in March 2019 because of an ‘intolerable’ and ‘unacceptable’ risk to life if seismic activity caused the coal ash dam wall to collapse.

Street art celebration on the way Street art is set to be celebrated this year when The Big Picture Fest rolls into town in October. The event will be Australia’s premier street art festival, and, thanks to COVID-19, it will be the largest event in Newcastle this year. Novocastrian and artist Jordan Lucky says he could not be more excited to be a part of the line-up. “It’s really a big moment for the street art scene in Newcastle, bringing together international acts as well as people from our community that deserve a spotlight and are producing really quality work and showcasing that to the city, so I am super excited to be a part of that,” he says. Lucky started painting when he was 14 and, since then, it’s become his full-time job. His works draw a lot of inspiration from nature and he says he is motivated by people in the community. “I love seeing drive in other people,” he says. “I am very motivated by watching other people grow and seeing what humans can do.” Over three days, from Friday 2 to Sunday 4
October, the large-scale street art event will bring world class artists to paint murals alongside local talent. They will paint on some of the city’s largest buildings to transform Newcastle’s streetscapes. Brontë Naylor and Olas One (Nick Stuart) are two other local artists featuring in the street art celebration. This month, the pair have been working on a mural at Waratah Train Station in the lead up to the festival as part of the redevelopment of the station. Naylor hopes the event will help people discover an appreciation for street art. “Some people are so stuck in their own mind that they could walk past a 100-metre mural and not notice it at all, but even then, it has place,” she says. “It informs how pedestrians navigate a place or how vibrant it is or how that street is animated.” For more information about The Big Picture Fest visit its website or social media pages. - Elizabeth Symington

LEGO set to bring a pop of colour to Charlestown Charlestown Square is set to add a touch of colour in the coming months, when LEGO opens its doors to the public. The popular Danish-owned toy brand is welcoming the new plastic hub as part of its expansion across Australia and New Zealand. The development is thanks to an agreement between Sydneybased retail investment group Alceon and The LEGO Group. The builders behind the blocks are promising the new store will be a “multi-sensory, interactive retail destination with eye-catching features such as the signature PickA-Brick Wall, hands-on play opportunities and larger-thanlife brick models”.
A digital box in which sets can be scanned and transformed into a 3D image will also feature, together with large brick mosaics paying tribute to local icons. Alceon Group executive director Richard Facioni said the store joins six others opened in the past year. “Our new AG LEGO Certified
Store will extend the local reach of this world-class retail concept, with a quality venue in a strong catchment set to attract an engaged and loyal base of brick fans. “Builders of all ages will be inspired by the unique in-store features and endless creative opportunities, with millions of bricks in the new store at any

The fruits of your labour
My first July column this month touched on pruning. I covered roses, hydrangeas and some ornamentals, but there are many other plants that require care at this time of year. Pruning during winter is an important part of cultivation of deciduous fruit trees, with one or two exceptions. Apricots, plums and cherries should be pruned after harvesting in summer – the aim of pruning
any fruit tree is to encourage larger, quality fruit. Usually it is three or four years before young trees produce a crop. Planting time is when initial pruning begins as the roots will have been cut back at the dig, whereas, generally not the top, which should be pruned if there is enough growth to do so. Second-year pruning means cutting the leaders back to selected, outward-growing side branches that should be encouraged to grow horizontally rather than vertically. This sounds a little complex but, as you prune, it will become clear what is happening. Gardeners need to be aware of fruiting wood so that fruit bearing limbs aren’t cut. For example: pears and apples fruit on second year or older wood, noting that pears take five years to bear.

Nectarines and peaches fruit on laterals produced the previous summer. Stone fruit should be sprayed with copper oxychloride during late July and early August to prevent leaf curl. After any pruning, fertilise the trees with a slow release product such as Organic Life. This is not dependant on the size of a garden. Last weekend, a couple came in for advice about their potted citrus and, as we talked to resolve their problems, I realised their whole productive garden was grown in pots. Out came the pictures, and I was surprised at the size of the edible figs they were growing in pots, not in the ground. It is all down to regular care, which they obviously enjoyed doing.
