This week... From the editor The weekend just gone saw a muchneeded return to winter sport for many competitions around the region. I, for one, was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t tear a hamstring and was still able to walk around the house on Sunday after the longest off-season I’ve ever had. It was a strange feeling not being able to shake hands with opponents after the final whistle and adhering to other COVID-19 measures designed to keep the sporting community safe, such as a cap on the number of people allowed in changing rooms. Several volunteers at my local football (soccer) club put in huge shifts on game day, from around 7am until 5pm, to implement these measures and ensure everything went smoothly. I’m sure that was common at other clubs as well. These volunteers deserve a great deal of appreciation for the lengths they are going to so that others can get back out on the park and do what they love. Given the pandemic’s ongoing impact around the world and, closer to home, in Victoria, the measures put in place are obviously a necessity. For those who aren’t aware, NSW has temporarily shut its border with Victoria as of Wednesday morning following the concerning spread of the virus in Melbourne. Stay safe everyone.

cover story Life’s just rosy at Lorn farm When you buy a rose farm, you would think a certain finesse to lovingly tend to the flowers would be instinctive. For Denise Duffield-Thomas and her young family, it was the start of a learning curve. Denise had never thought about buying a country property before, but, when the renowned Lorn Rose Farm was listed on the market, she wanted in. “I started reading Country Style Magazine and I just fell in love with these country cottages, so I put an alert on my phone for country cottages just to look and then I saw this place came up,” she told the Newcastle Weekly. “I’d just had my third baby and thought: ‘No I’m not going to look at it,’ and it came up again a few months later, so I came out to look and just fell in love,” she said.
The cottage, barn and rose farm has a long history, stemming back to the early 1900s, resulting in it forming a special place in the hearts of locals. For the Duffield-Thomas family, the roses were purely a bonus to their purchase of the property on Glenarvon Road. “My husband had to go on a bit of a crash course on how to prune roses and contacted the NSW Rose Society to help because he had literally never cut a rose before,” Denise said. “We did a Valentine’s Day store which was really fun, staying up until like 2am cutting roses and watching YouTube videos on how to strip thorns from roses.” Denise admits now there’s a sense of duty to uphold the farm’s legacy. “I think every single week we find

someone who says: ‘Oh, I wanted to buy the farm,’ or ‘My dad had flowers from the rose farm at his wedding,’ or people come in for their anniversary flowers,” she said. “That’s why we want to build up the rose part of the business again, because there does seem to be so many beautiful memories of the farm and we really want to honour
that and give people the opportunity to come and buy the flowers from us. “It feels like a big responsibility in that way because it has a lot of attachment to people in the area, so we knew we had to create opportunities for that.” While roses are the main attraction, a vegetable garden has been established on the property

by local duo The Good Growers, and the Humble Hive Collection has jumped on board to produce honey on the land. The intention – to have a farm gate store where you can buy flowers, honey and produce. The cottage itself is a world away from farm life – its sweet pink interior sprinkled with floral furniture and dried arrangements hanging from the ceiling in the most beautiful and artistic manner. It’s already wowing international visitors, who have attended the farm for business retreats. “I have had a mini conference here, bringing women in from all around the world, America, the Netherlands, New Zealand, to dream about businesses and come up with creative ideas,” Denise said. And there’s one floral attribute you really can’t miss – a huge mural of a chevvy overflowing with roses, which was dedicated to the farm by Amanda O’Bryan, from Creative
Queen Bees. “We were inspired by other places you go that have a landmark mural, and so we wanted to have something where people immediately think of the rose farm,” Denise said. “You will be able to see it from the road, it will be the first thing you see, so my intention is it will be something you can come and get your photo in front of.” It’s also hoped to be a drawcard for events, which Denise is in the process of seeking approval for. “We would love to do weddings here because it is such a romantic place and we think it would be a beautiful place to get married,” she said. “I mean, I’d love my kids to get married here, which they’re very far away from, my youngest is two so it will be a while.” The farm is hoping for a spring opening. - Emma Murphy

Generous Bert calls it a day

Bert Caddies derives pure joy from giving to others, so much so the 97-year-old has made volunteering his full-time occupation of late. Last week, however, the Meals on Wheels volunteer gave up his regular delivery route, a job he says was “one of the best things that ever happened” to him. “There’s real pleasure in giving,” he said. “You drive up to someone’s house and they’re pleased to see you. “It doesn’t get any better than that.” Bert has been volunteering at the charitable program’s Merewether and Mayfield branches three days a week for the past seven years. He took on this role shortly after his wife Gladys died. “I was at a loose end and I found this thing that was a perfect fit for me,” he said. “I like calling on people. Most of
them are younger than me but I don’t mind that.” His own age is not something that worries Bert. In fact, if you ask, he says he still feels eighty. “Inside I’m the healthiest bloke you’ll meet, but the outside is not so good.” Other than having a pacemaker inserted a few years ago and the odd skin cancer removed, Bert says he’s as good as can be. “I walk everywhere while I can,” he said. “I leave the car at home and get out on foot.” The kind-hearted Novocastrian is also no stranger to hard work, having held several job roles over the years. As a former RAAF Wireless Air Gunner (WAG), Bert, born Robert Caddies, served in Borneo during World War II. He was also a selftaught pastry chef, with many fellow volunteers claiming his apple pies
were second-to-none. “I’ve been known to drop some of them off during my rounds too,” Bert said. “It gives them all a smile.” It is this generous spirit and accepting attitude that Meals on Wheels’ Merewether branch coordinator Tina Flood says will be sorely missed. “He’s a one in a million,” she said. “He’s an inspiration to everyone he comes across. “He will be thoroughly missed by all his clients, volunteers and staff. “We wish him nothing but the best.” Officially handing over his apron this week, Bert offered some advice to younger generations. “I don’t know if I’m one to give advice, but I’d say be yourself, be kind and accept what happens to you,” he said. - Rebecca Riddle

The old Store site in Newcastle West has finally been transformed, with the Newcastle Bus Interchange officially opening at the weekend. It’s the final link in the NSW Government’s $650 million Revitalising Newcastle program. Transport for NSW representative, Pete Allaway, said the fully integrated transport hub would connect buses, coaches, heavy rail and light rail, with around 300 buses utilising the interchange on a weekly basis. “We have seen Newcastle embrace the light rail and this new interchange will help encourage the use of public transport in the region,” he said. Work is still underway on the Store site’s redevelopment, with some facilities at the new bus interchange, including the kiss and ride area, opening at a later stage. The interchange will also provide pedestrian access between the station concourse, the bus interchange, Hunter Street and Stewart Avenue. The interchange will be used by Newcastle Transport’s Route 22 bus service, regional bus service operators, and coaches servicing parts of the Hunter and Mid North Coast.
A new centre in Windale is set to connect the community while encouraging residents to learn and create. The proposed multi-purpose centre will feature a high-tech library, modern community spaces and a flexible layout. It comes after community engagement showed there was a need for a space to come together and feel at home. “The open-plan design, flexible social spaces and library functions woven throughout the building aim to create the feeling of a welcoming, safe community loungeroom,” Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Community Partnerships, Andrew Bryant, said. “The community also wanted the building to be adaptable to provide a wide range of services, allowing social activities to take place alongside spaces for learning, wellbeing and personal achievements.” The building design features a range of adaptable spaces, including a large community hall and an activity room for gatherings and functions, as well as smaller meeting rooms that are soundproofed to enable use as a recording studio.
More than 30 community organisations across Newcastle have jointly received $550,000 to support the provision of critical services made urgent by COVID-19. City of Newcastle identified early in the pandemic that 31 groups would struggle to deliver services to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the community and initiated the Boost Our City targeted grants program in response. “The intent of the funding package was to support existing service providers to cope with increased urgency and demand for support services, including supported living, crisis support, welfare, community transport and meal services,” Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, said. “Countless vulnerable people in our community rely on a helping hand from our local charitable organisations, so when they were under pressure, we were eager to provide a boost.” Cr Nelmes said $150,000 was rolled out through a Rapid Response Grant Program to deal with the initial community impact of COVID-19, which was then followed by the larger, targeted Boost Our City initiative.

news Sanctuary in need of help Sandy Kokas-Magnusson has been around donkeys her entire life. She first started caring for them as part of a family effort at the tender age of three-years-old. “I was always cleaning stables and grooming donkeys,” she told Newcastle Weekly. Currently, 82 donkeys are in her care, spread across several properties nestled in the hills of Glen William in the Lower Hunter Valley, between Clarence Town and Dungog. It’s home to the Good Samaritan Donkey Sanctuary, which provides intensive care, refuge and protection for orphaned, neglected or surrended donkeys. It started from humble beginnings, with Sandy’s mother Jo-Anne first rescuing a donkey in 1972 – a mission that drives Sandy to continue such care. “It’s mum’s legacy and mum’s
dream to have started all this, so I don’t want to see that fail in any way, I want to continue on her legacy,” Sandy said. The majority of donkeys that call the sanctuary home have health issues, which means caring for them doesn’t come cheap. And, in a year where the sanctuary, which relies solely on public donations, has been impacted by drought, bushfires and COVID-19, money is tight. “Donations have dwindled down terribly, we had a lot of people who donated weekly or monthly but they can’t now because they’ve lost their jobs with coronavirus,” Sandy said. With the after effects of the drought, the sanctuary still can’t access straw anywhere in NSW, which means it’s being imported from South Australia at a cost of $7,000 per month. have remained empty, with many shops closing due to the pandemic, and the sanctuary is closed to visitors who also supplemented income. “It’s hard, we get by, but it’s hard,” Sandy said. “We’d love to have a sponsor as we need a new horse float, a car, and to concrete the hay shed, which was damaged in the 2015 floods. “We are always begging the government for grants.” The donkey ICU has also run out of medical supplies and, with a wet
winter predicted, they’re needed now more than ever. “The last lot of rain we had, I ended up with 10 with foot abscesses, so that’s a big burden,” Sandy said. Despite being a labor of love for Sandy and her husband Barry, a handful of volunteers also help keep the sanctuary running. Driverless shuttle bus hits the streets as trial begins Novocastrian Matthew Morris has described being one of the first passengers on the city’s driverless shuttle bus as an “absolutely amazing” experience. “As a person who doesn’t drive, to see autonomous technology pop up in Newcastle, I am really excited to see how [fellow] Novocastrians react to the technology and hopefully in the future I might be able to own something like this and get around,” he said. “The vehicle is surprisingly uneventful, you wouldn’t expect it to be anything exciting, it almost sounds rude to say boring but that is exactly what it should be, it was uneventful like any other vehicle. “What I like about autonomous technology is that it doesn’t get distracted, it doesn’t look down
to text, it doesn’t drink behind the wheel, so it’s a technology that is always looking out for you.” The driverless shuttle bus is set to mix with traffic along Wharf Road as part of a three-month trial. Newcastle Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen welcomed the first passengers as they ushered in the pilot project on Monday morning. “I’m delighted to see the trial underway and people riding the city’s first driverless vehicle,” Cr Clausen said. “This is another milestone in Newcastle’s smart city journey as we trial the future of automated transport as part of the city’s ‘living lab’ experiment. “Tourists will now be to be able to take in our magnificent harbour and foreshore and return home telling

people they were among the first passengers in Australia on a shuttle with nobody at the wheel, or with no steering wheel at all in fact.” However, the Rail, Tram and Bus Union NSW believed Newcastle’s driverless shuttle bus trial was ludicrous and out of touch with the community. The union claimed millions of dollars were spent on a project that
did not create substantial jobs or contribute to the region’s highcapacity transport mix. It added community feedback had been lamenting savage cuts to Newcastle’s bus network for years, with route cuts, service cuts and stop closures meaning many were forced to catch three different buses to get by every day. - Elizabeth Symington

Railway museum open to public Richmond Vale Railway Museum has steamed into the school holidays after celebrating the historic site’s reopening at the weekend. The museum, located about four kilometres south of Kurri Kurri, was formed in 1979 and contains precious stock from the Hunter Region’s rich industrial history. While the NSW Government announced that museums could reopen from 1 June, chairman Peter Meddows said that, with long grass to cut and intensive cleaning and preparations required, it took volunteers a little longer to do so safely. However, after three months of COVID-induced shutdown, the museum was excited to bring its displays and train rides back to visitors on Sunday. Popular steam locomotive, Marjorie, built in 1938 and withdrawn from service in 1972, will not be among the attractions for the time being. “At this time, and until we are secure in operations, our full-sized trains will be diesel-hauled,” Mr Meddows said. “Marjorie was placed in dry storage at shutdown and it is impractical to bring her back into service while our situation is uncertain.”

There is ample space in the grounds for visitors to move around safely, but clear capacity signage will be posted for interior spaces in order to maintain social distancing. The museum has also installed multiple hand sanitiser stations across the site to ensure proper hygiene, while train carriages will have specific occupancy limits and will be disinfected between journeys. The museum display rooms, canteen and souvenir shop will be open under strict social distancing guidelines. It is open on the first three Sundays of each month, including during the school holidays, from 9.30am. Entry fees are adults $16.50; concession $11; children aged 5-15 $7.50; and under 5 free.

Give wattle the status it deserves
Have you noticed when driving along roads bordered by bushland there are trees covered in bright yellow balls? I am surprised each year when this beautiful native begins emerging with its colourful display in the depth of winter. I must admit acacias (wattles) have lost popularity for planting by the home gardener – this is probably because of their short life span and size. Let me assure you that yearly pruning after flowering will prolong their life. Their greatest advantage is how quickly they
grow, filling in spaces, particularly where privacy is needed. There are 800 species of acacia, which are indigenous to Australia and part of the mimosaceae family. We tend not to give wattle the status it deserves, and we should because, after all, it is our national flower. Acacia pycnantha is generally recognised as the Australian floral emblem. The Greek word pycnantha refers to the dense mass of flowers borne on the broad leaf wattles. Acacia pycnantha is a small tree with a short trunk and a dense
