From the editor Alright, it’s official – the world has gone mad. Whether you agree with it or not, businesses around the globe are taking a more culturally sensitive approach to their slogans and branding in response to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. This includes debate over Coon cheese wanting to change its name, as well as Nestlé’s plan to alter its iconic Allen’s lollies, known as ‘Chicos’ and ‘Red Skins’, and a Texas realtor group’s decision to no longer use the term ‘master’ to describe bedrooms and bathrooms in listings. What can’t be debated is the deplorable conduct of those involved in the ridiculous attacks on police officers across the state, including here in the Hunter Region. I’m not suggesting these were influenced by the BLM movement. All I know is there has been a notable increase in abuse, not just for our officers, but also towards other members of the public, shop workers, and politicians. Wallsend State MP Sonia Hornery used her Facebook page earlier this week to call out a number of individuals who had reportedly subjected her staff to “unacceptable” abuse. I feel she was being a bit kind when she mentioned that people had gone through months of isolation or might’ve had a bad few weeks. As her post also stated, it all comes down to one simple thing – respect.

news Spate of attacks on police Northern Region Commander Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell says there is never an excuse for assaulting a police officer. His comment comes after several attacks on police in the Port Stephens, Newcastle and Hunter districts over the past few weeks. Three officers were assaulted in Maitland after stopping a vehicle due to dangerous driving, with one sustaining a fractured eye socket, while another officer was allegedly threatened with a knife in a highprofile incident at Hamilton South. “Thousands of police officers go out every day and face the unknown,” Assistant Commissioner Mitchell said. “They put themselves in harm’s way to protect the community. “In recent weeks, our Hunter officers have faced some traumatic and terrifying incidents, all while

attending routine callouts. “Violence against any emergency service worker is totally unacceptable, and we will continue to do all we can to put these offenders before the courts.” Sixty-seven officers have been assaulted while executing their duty across the Port Stephens, Newcastle and Hunter districts this year to date. Police Association of NSW’s Northern Region Office executive member, Ian Allwood, said the attacks were “disgusting”. He added the conduct of the people involved in the incidents was “quite frankly disturbing”. During the assault at Hamilton South last week, two police officers were threatened verbally and physically assaulted when they arrived in Fowler Street after being tipped off about a possible brawl.

NSW Police subsequently released Body Worn Video of the incident, which went viral on social media. “The level of senseless attacks, assaults and abuse that police officers are faced with every day is disgusting,” Mr Allwood said. “Our members in the Hunter have worked hard to establish respectful and meaningful relationships with our communities. “We know that the actions of a few do not reflect the wider community’s stance towards our

members. “Police officers and emergency workers are not punching bags; no person should come to work and be assaulted for simply carrying out the duty the community expects of them. “I’m calling for people to respect our first responders and be calm.” He added that, since the outbreak of COVID-19 in March, police and emergency workers have performed extraordinary duties to keep the community safe. - Elizabeth Symington

Showtime as facilities set for major makeovers Maitland Showground Manager Brett Gleeson has wasted no time getting the ball rolling on some big projects since taking the reins in November. That includes successfully securing both federal and state funding. The Australian Government has delivered $256,000 as part of a push to renew ageing showgrounds while the NSW Government has promised close to $290,000 as part of its COVID-19 stimulus package. More than 10 projects will be completed at Maitland under the state government grant. They include restoring the veranda and awning on the arts and craft pavilion, which was built in 1892, upgrading lighting, electrical works, painting and extending

a stormwater drain to a dam to prevent flooding of the grounds during storms. “The show association is 160 years old and a lot of infrastructure is heritage-listed and requires constant expenditure to keep it upto-date,” Mr Gleeson said. “We are certainly looking to boost what we do and have a long-term plan to revitalise the showground and, bit by bit, these grants will help a lot.” The venue is already home to Groovin the Moo, the Caravan, Camping, 4WD, Fish and Boat Show, Winemakers Show, harness racing, greyhound racing, poultry shows and the Maitland markets. “It’s a fantastic community asset and we want to make sure it stays current,” Mr Gleeson said.

However, there is a twist, with works needing to improve the facility but also maintain its charm. “In some ways, it has a very rustic country feel to it, so it’s a balance,” Mr Gleeson added. “We’re not wanting it to look contemporary, because that’s what some people want for weddings and significant milestones. “It’s about agriculture and we don’t want to lose that, just make sure everything is in good working order and well maintained.” It couldn’t come at a better time, with the showground having no

events scheduled until August due to COVID-19. Newcastle Showground was also a beneficiary of the NSW Government’s stimulus package, receiving close to $630,000 in funding to upgrade its grounds. This will include the construction of a kitchen and bar in the upstairs showground office, upgrades to lighting and the Country Women’s Association building, and the construction of disability ramps for wheelchair access around the showground. - Emma Murphy

news Maitland Old Girls’ to host reunion Lots of noise, lots of chatter and a large rendition of the school song. That’s what ex-students attending this year’s Maitland Grossman High School reunion luncheon in September can expect. Combined with laughter and the sharing of photos and stories, Maitland Girls’ High School Old Girl’s union member Lee Osborne says the event will be a chance to maintain a link with the past. “It’s a great opportunity to reminisce and catch up with people you might not have seen in years,” she said. “We are really looking forward to it.” The annual event is open to all students who attended throughout the school’s extensive history. Mrs Osborne, formerly Miss Moore, believes opening the event up to all year groups, including current school captains, encourages larger numbers and greater diversity. “There could be anyone from a 90-year-old to a teenager attend,” she said. “But we all share a common bond.” The 6th Form graduate of 1972 says the

Cumberland Street site holds precious memories for many former students. Her fondness for the establishment grew from her time as class prefect to a role as careers advisor on the teaching staff, which she held from 1990 until her retirement in 2017. “Life takes funny turns,” she said. “I loved my job. And it was fantastic to be here and help students find their chosen career paths.” Maitland Girls’ High School was established in 1884 with 17 enrolled students. “It’s one of the oldest high schools in NSW,” Mrs Osborne said. In 1987, the school became co-educational, changing its name to Maitland Grossman High School. “The name went to and fro because we wanted to keep the initials MGHS,” she added. “It was named after the longest running principal, Miss Grossman, who served from 1890 to 1913. “We kept our motto too: Labor, Omnia, Vincit – work conquers all.” Old Girls’ of Maitland Girls’ High School and

Novocastrian delight at successful World Cup bid Football Federation Australia and New Zealand Football have together made history as the first co-Confederation to host a FIFA Women’s World Cup. The 2023 tournament will also be the first one held in the southern hemisphere. McDonald Jones Stadium is expected to be a match venue, with Newcastle forming part of Australia’s bid. Newcastle has also been put forward as an attractive location for teams to base themselves to stay and train during their World Cup campaign. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the vote had Australian – and indeed Novocastrian – football fans cheering. “This is a fantastic opportunity

cover story Northstars return to the ice For Newcastle Northstars veteran David Ferrari, a return to training this month was about more than getting back on the ice. After three months away from the rink, Ferrari said reconnecting with his teammates had been the highlight. “It’s excellent [to be back at training], probably socially is the best thing, being back with the guys,” he said. “I’ve missed being on the ice but being back in the dressing room with the guys is great.” Ferrari said it was incredibly difficult to create training sessions without having access to the ice. “You can’t really replicate a workout around skating, it’s very unique, so that was difficult,” he said. “For me, it was just regular workouts and about enjoying

the time off, enjoying the time with family [and going] running, keeping the cardio at a decent level.” Ferrari, a defenceman who joined the Northstars in 2011, added he was hopeful the sport would come back stronger than ever next year. Coach John Kennedy Jr echoed Ferrari’s thoughts. He said it was “awesome” to be back in action. “After everything that’s happened, it’s just getting back to what we love to do,” he said. “It’s about being back on the ice, seeing your mates again and enjoying the game.” He added that, while the pandemic created challenges around training, it had allowed him and the team to refocus. believed there would not be much of a season this year because “everything is up in the air”. “We may do a smaller version of it where you have Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) teams compete in a NSW competition,” he said. “Some type of mini comp, just four to six weeks of exhibition games where the fans can come

The Waratahs Junior Rugby Union Club is kicking off a preseason training program for all its young players to be ready for the 2020 junior rugby union season in late July. President of The Waratahs Juniors, Chris Grieve, said, while the COVID-19 pandemic had affected all rugby union clubs, it was now nice to be able to provide an opportunity for young players to get back on the rugby field. The Waratahs returned to training this week after receiving the green light from government authorities. “Our first competition games

will be on Saturday 25 July and we look forward to seeing all our young players – we’re especially interested in welcoming Under 8s, 9s, 10s, 11s and 15s who want to join our teams,” Grieve said. The club will also offer a Tiny Tahs rugby program for children in the Kindergarten to Year 2 age group. Grieve said the club had received a lot of interest from club supporters to run an intraclub rugby format on Saturday mornings, where young children could learn ball skills and running techniques in a team atmosphere. The first junior team from The Waratahs ran onto the field in 1940 and the club is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2020. Potential players and parents who require more information are invited to attend a training session on any Tuesday or contact the club via its website or on Facebook.

Kids set to go wild during school holiday program Kids are set to go wild, writing, printmaking and facing off with giant dinosaurs as part of a new school holiday program. Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said a range of activities and shows had been tailored to comply with COVID-19 guidelines, with smaller group sizes creating a more intimate atmosphere

for participants. “Our school holiday programs are always popular, and we expect the July edition to be no different,” Ms Hemsley said. SEEN@Swansea will host the new exhibition Tyrannosaurs: Ultimate Predators, featuring life-sized bone casts, models and information panels to catalogue the history of these prehistoric carnivores.

Dino-themed zine-making workshops will be held in conjunction with the show, hosted by local illustrator Tallulah Cunningham. Hold back the chainsaw during pruning

July takes us into the depth of winter – a time when we are encouraged to stay inside where it is warm, avoiding the cold westerly winds. However, there are important tasks to be completed during this month. Gardeners need to be aware that the cold winds can dry out surface rooted plants, whilst frost prone areas need to protect susceptible plants as well as hosing down the garden before the morning sun hits the plants, particularly newly planted trees and shrubs. Leave rose pruning in frost prone areas until August or when the late frosts are over. Coastal wise roses could be pruned this month,

but preferably close to the end of July. My standard ‘Ellinas’ look dreadful, but I am resisting the temptation to prune now. When you do prune, spray with lime sulphur, which cleans up scale and fungal disease and keeps the roses free for a few months. Feed each rose with a full bucketful of poultry manure (that is ground grown roses), then follow three weeks later with rose food. Standard roses should be pruned into the size of a soccer ball, following the same instructions for standard roses. A golden rule is never to prune climbing roses (if they need it) until they have finished blooming in summer. Okay, July is pruning time, but don’t be over zealous – hold back the chainsaw and look what really needs to be cut back. Remember what is cut off can’t be glued back on. Care should be taken not to prune spring flowering trees, deciduous trees and shrubs that are being grown for their spring blossom. Duranta, fuschia, grapes, westringia, plumbago, viburnum, photinias and hydrangea all enjoy a winter prune.

I advocate feeding to encourage new growth when pruning. Pruning hydrangea can be perplexing, but if you didn’t do a summer prune, simply don’t cut back the stems that have not flowered. Hydrangea should be pruned back to two stems where there are two eyes beginning to shoot, and remember that flower colour can be affected by what you apply when fertilising. Acidity and alkalinity can play a vital role in shades of colour. Poultry manure will increase alkalinity, changing blooms to shades of pink and mauve, whereas cow manure will encourage deeper colours. To maintain the present colour, fertilise with a product with a neutral pH, such as Bounceback. Deciduous trees and shrubs are available in nurseries during July – after planting, remember to water regularly to encourage the sap to rise. Although we seem to be getting regular rain, take care that the winter winds don’t dry out gardens and potted plants – apply peat moss around the shallow roots of azaleas and camellias. - Judy Sharpe
