This week... From the editor It was great to see so many people head away for the long weekend and enjoy some much-needed family time after the past few months. While it restored some sense of normality and provided a welcome boost for tourism operators, I must admit that I may not have felt this way for about an hour as I sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic at Hexham on the way home from the office on Monday afternoon. As most of you will no doubt be aware, the NSW Government decided to lift COVID-19 travel restrictions earlier this month. Whale watching cruise companies in Port Stephens were among those eager to see visitors return as humpback whales make their annual 10,000-kilometre journey from Antarctica to give birth in warmer waters. One of our reporters, Rebecca Riddle, ventured out with professional photographer and Imagine Cruises crew member, Lisa Skelton, last week to take in the sights and sounds. You’ll find our cover story on page 9. We’ve also covered the Black Lives Matter rally in Newcastle, which saw about 5,000 protesters gather in the CBD, as well as a heart-warming story about an eight-year-old who is collecting prescription glasses to support the charity Lions Outback Vision. - Ben Murphy

news New resource launches to support local organisations If you’re looking to lend a hand across the Hunter, there’s a new app that’s perfect for you. It’s called ‘Lean In Newy’ and it connects organisations that need support with people wanting to help, while providing added encouragement through $50,000 in vouchers and discounts redeemable at local businesses. Twenty-three businesses and 11 not-for-profits, like Family Support Newcastle, OzHarvest, Dog Rescue Newcastle and Take 3 For The Sea have registered, putting out a call for volunteers. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes says City of Newcastle is funding the discounts and incentives during the COVID-19 recovery phase. “For people who want to volunteer and support others it is a great
resource because you can say ‘I have this skill set, I’d match well with say Newcastle Family Support Services or Landcare,’” she says. “This also helps you to do training online so you can get the qualifications you need to complete before you need to go and volunteer with any organisation.” Family Support Newcastle has signed on, asking for donations to help the community. “We’re looking for supplies for children, like activity packs that will keep them amused and entertained and sanitisation packs for families, filled with things that have been hard to afford so hand sanitisers, wipes and all things they might need as a boost,” Chief Executive Sue Hellier says. “I think it’s a fantastic idea and I like the concept, the fact that people

can give and get recognition for that giving and knowing they are contributing and making a difference to families, I think, makes a difference to people.” Kate McNally, who operates Zebra Finch at Marketown and Kotara, has jumped on board, with the hope her businesses’ incentive will encourage people back into her stores. “We’ve set up once you spend over $60 you get $15 back off any purchase just to drive people into our business

news Big surf threatens to wash away club’s storied history While surfers welcomed the large swells that smashed Newcastle shores late last month, Cooks Hill Life Saving and Surf Club members say the massive waves were too much for the club’s ageing elements. The rising tides and monster waves that hit on Sunday 24 May wreaked havoc on the club’s beachside building, with the whitewash leaving behind a soggy structure that is now inaccessible to the public. Club spokesperson Nina Mills said the deck, now deemed unsafe to use, was not the only area to suffer. “The storms caused the deck to move and, in some areas, detach from the surf club,” she said. “Beach side of the original surf club, ground floor areas, including the patrol room and men’s changerooms, have been flooded
with sand being swept up under the doors. “The salt water and air also damaged the internal fixtures and some equipment during these storms and over time. “The current state of the deck is deemed to be unsafe until it is resolved.” Originally constructed using club funding, Ms Mills said the damaged area was part of the structure built in the 1930s. “The surf club was part of a Great Depression work project and is the last remaining section of the grand structure that once stood on Bar Beach.” For the club, established in 1911, this was not the first time the premises have been damaged by large swells.

Wild weather caused significant damage to Cooks Hill Life Saving and Surf Club.
“Unfortunately, this is the fourth time it has been damaged within 15 years,” Ms Mills said. “In 2007, it was damaged with the Pasha Bulker storm not long after it had just been built. “It was damaged again in 2010 and again in the 2015 April super storm.” Ms Mills said the group hoped to receive a grant to assist with repairs. “Previous damage to the deck was repaired using surf club funds, however, this time there’s uncertainty if we’ll be able to fix it ourselves,” she
said. “Cooks Hill SLSC recently submitted a grant seeking funds to relocate the patrol room into the new building along with the construction of a replacement deck with better access in and out of the boat shed and easier access for wheelchairs. “The club is reviewing the situation and consulting with City of Newcastle to progress the current discussions around repair versus replacement.” - Rebecca Riddle

news Novocastrians join global fight with peaceful protest Thousands of protesters rallied in Newcastle on Sunday for a cause that has captured the world. The Stop Black Deaths in Custody – Justice for George Floyd protest called on the community to join the fight. However, organisers decided to cease further planning after the police withdrew their approval of the event. Instead, they encouraged people to exercise their right to protest peacefully as individuals, and they turned up in droves, with about 5,000 people lining the streets. “[The Indigenous-led] protest [hoped] to stand in solidarity with George Floyd and his family; and to highlight and demand justice for the Deaths in Custody of all First Nations, Black and Brown people globally,” A Fighting in Solidarity Towards
Treaties (FISTT) spokesperson said. “FISTT wants to bring awareness, and demand action, to implement the 339 recommendations handed down in the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in 1991.” According to the group, there have been at least 432 black deaths in custody since 1991. That’s more than one death a month. The FISTT spokesperson says the loss of life to police brutality is sickening. “It sickens me, and I fear for my life as a black [person] every day,” they said. “In the case of Rebecca Maher, she was a young mum whose death could have been prevented. “Rebecca died in Maitland Police Station in 2016 – it’s happening in our

backyard and Australia has blood all over its hands. “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the most incarcerated in the world. “We only make up 3% of the Australian population yet make up 28% of the prison population.” All protesters were asked to wear black to mourn and acknowledge all black deaths in custody. The FISTT spokesperson added that, if you could not attend the protest, you should use your voice to call out racism.
“Challenge your family and friends’ racist ‘jokes’ and ideologies [and] show up to protests in the future like Invasion Day 2021, because we still have a lot to fight for,” they said. “Listen to understand; check your privilege and be willing to unlearn hurtful behaviours that may be unconscious bias.” The spokesperson said donating to causes and signing petitions that support the movement were also appreciated. - Elizabeth Symington

news Hero or villain? Views on filming George Floyd’s death A criminologist at the University of Newcastle has spoken out following the death of George Floyd, encouraging people to know their rights when it comes to filming the actions of police. It coincides with the 17-yearold who filmed the arrest, Darnella Frazier, being both hailed and harassed for her actions or lackthere-of. The teenager took to Facebook saying: “I am a minor, 17-years-old – of course I’m not about to fight off a cop, I’m scared.” Dr Justin Ellis believes her actions should be praised. “It takes a lot of fortitude and bravery and that needs to be recognised,” he says. “What she did was correct, she filmed from far away and was not involved in the situation, and bystanders were saying get off him.”
He stresses that civilians have the right to film police on duty, as long as they don’t obstruct them from carrying out their work. And, while doing so can be a “public service,” the emotional repercussions can be challenging. “It’s a very personal decision [to film], and the George Floyd arrest is a good case study of how emotionally distressing it can be,” he says. “It’s up to the individual but the main point is it’s lawful. “You need to be safe but it’s an incredible public service, as much as people might be criticised for not doing more.” Dr Ellis admits, from his research, he’s uncovered that being filmed does cause police to change their behaviour – often using less force than they would usually. “Police do moderate their use of
force because of video,” he says. “It lets police know there is a bystander. They have a difficult job and things can go wrong, but generally filming can moderate police behaviour, but it’s a case by case analysis.” Dr Ellis’ PhD involved an indepth case study of the excessive force used by Australian police against Sydney teenager Jamie Jackson at the 2013 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade, which was captured on video. He says that the development of technology, rise of social media sharing platforms and improvements to Wi-Fi capacity have created a new dimension when it comes to holding police accountable. Smartphones can be the enemy and ally of police, with video footage being used as evidence to defend
or incriminate. And, at times, it can be misleading, providing only a snapshot in time. “One of the problems with video is that it can be from the person filming’s point of view,” he says, referencing the arrest of a Sydney Indigenous teenager in Surry Hills last week. “With that video it’s too early to tell, but the big problem is the public doesn’t understand what force is necessary and reasonable in those contexts.” “Each video needs to be taken on its merit, on a case by case basis depending on what happened beforehand, during and afterwards.” His main message, if you’re ever questioned by police as to why you’re filming, is you have every right to, as long as you are out of the way. - Emma Murphy

news Leighana on a mission to help improve vision When Leighana’s mum decided to clean out her cupboards to make way for some new Tupperware, she never imagined it would lead to her shy eight-year-old helping hundreds regain their sight. The “COVID Cleanout”, as mum Jess Blanch called it, was just about making some much-needed space. However, after finding four unused pairs of prescription glasses, Leighana was on a mission to find a new purpose for them. With the help of her laptop, she found the charity Lions Outback Vision. The group collects unused prescription glasses and recycles them, distributing them among those with vision impairment living in remote communities. The collection will also form part
of achieving her service badge for Girl Guides. Leighana, who is a member of the Beresfield Thornton Junior Girl Guides, has been passionately collecting her badges since she was six. This year, she hopes to gain her junior BP badge. After the bright Beresfield resident dropped a collection box at six of her local stores, she impatiently waited for any response. “I shared it on social media and just watched it go crazy,” Jess said. “Leighana couldn’t see how much it was being shared online obviously, she doesn’t have social media, so she didn’t understand when I was telling her how much it was getting shared.

“It wasn’t until the next day when we came down to the shop and I said to her in the car: ‘How many do you think will be in there?’ “She said 10. Of course, at that age there is no concept of numbers, so when we came in and she saw the box the first thing she said was ‘someone’s broken our box’ but Andrew [post office employee] had
to break the box to fit more glasses in.” There were 85 pairs inside. Within a week, Leighana has collected almost 400 pairs. “It’s more than I thought,” Leighana said. “I even got a note from someone who said some supportive things.” - Rebecca Riddle

cover story All aboard as restrictions lift to boost regional tourism Lisa Skelton was just four years old when she first became obsessed with whales. The year was 1993 and her parents Colin and Sue-Ellen took her to see a film about a street kid who befriends a killer whale and fights for its release. “Yes, it started with Free Willy,” Ms Skelton said. “That first time I saw a killer whale breach. “After that I had to own books and watch them all the time. “When I couldn’t go out on a boat to watch them, mum and dad plonked me on the sand dunes to watch [the whales] from the beach.” What followed was almost three decades of finding ways to share a passion for the wild creatures with anyone who’d listen.
Now 32, Ms Skelton is a crew member at Imagine Cruises in Port Stephens. The team was thrilled to be welcoming passengers back on board the Envision last week after regional NSW travel restrictions were lifted at the start of this month. The regular sail to waters along the region’s Humpback Highway was closed on 24 March. “It’s great to be back,” Ms Skelton said. “We love what we do, and we love it when people learn something about the whales during their time with us.” Ms Skelton said the 90-minute cruise looked a little different, with regular wiping of railings, a thorough sanitation of the boat pre-and-post cruise, hand sanitiser

available onboard and the request that passengers maintain social distancing. These are things they can endeavour to control. The whales, however, remain unpredictable. “This is mother nature, so we can’t guarantee a sighting obviously, but rarely do we not encounter at least one whale,” Ms Skelton said. “And, usually we’ll be followed by quite a few dolphins as well.”
After gorging on krill in the Southern Ocean, the female humpbacks travel 10,000 kilometres from Antarctica to give birth in warmer water. The journey is undertaken from May to November, with numbers now more than 37,000. “They slap their fins on the water and breach and jump out [of the water] and show us their bellies, it’s so playful,” Ms Skelton said. - Rebecca Riddle

Praise for government’s stimulus package The Hunter Business Chamber has welcomed the Federal Government’s building and construction industry stimulus package, which will offer grants of $25,000 to assist eligible home builders and renovators with projects. The government wants the HomeBuilder program, available between June and December, to help stimulate Australia’s postCOVID economy. Hunter Business Chamber Chief Executive, Bob Hawes, said construction was a key industry in the region. “It’s the third highest employing industry after health and retail, so this stimulus will provide much-needed support for jobs and businesses in our regional economy,” he said. “Construction has held up reasonably well in the Hunter due largely to contracts that were already in place.
“This scheme will ensure there is a pipeline of work to keep builders going through the recovery period and avoid the ‘valley of death’ scenario. “We are also keen to see JobMaker discussions addressing the skills issue, as we know a lot of apprentices have lost their jobs due to COVID-19, despite the government’s wage subsidies.” Mr Hawes added that, while a quick response from business and industry was needed to maximise outcomes of the scheme, it was important that checks and balances were in place to ensure work can only be done by licensed, reputable trades professionals. “We welcome measures in the scheme to ensure that work can only be done by builders who were licensed or registered before the announcement of the scheme,” he said. “We don’t want to see a repeat of the ‘pink batts’ scheme where
cowboy operators came into the industry, with dire consequences. “We note that the program only runs until the end of the year, so will need the cooperation of councils to ensure the timely assessment of development applications subject to the Homebuilder program.” Mr Hawes said the scheme would provide welcome support to a major industry. However, he added the chamber
would continue to advocate for similar targeted stimulus measures to assist other hard-hit sectors where many businesses were struggling or had already been forced to close. Recipients of the building and construction industry stimulus package will need to spend at least $150,000 of their own money. “Fringe family” needed to keep festival

Organisers of the annual Newcastle Fringe Festival are urging the community to join their family. The festival, affectionately known as ‘The Fringe’, received a lifeline in May when it was announced as a recipient of the Australian Council Resilience Fund, ensuring the viability of the festival
in 2021. Newcastle Fringe was one of the earliest victims of COVID-19 when it was forced to close the festival within two days of the scheduled opening. Many of the artists from this year’s scheduled festival chose to take credits on their entry fees so that they can return next year. Newcastle Fringe 2021 will be the sixth annual festival and is set to go from 17 to 21 March 2021. It is run entirely by a volunteer board of directors and a handful of volunteers and is now seeking additional assistance in several key areas. Organisers say volunteers will be required to work a minimum of two to four volunteer hours per week. The roles available include administration, digital marketing,

Libraries to reopen Plans for a staged reopening of Newcastle’s libraries will progress from Monday after home library services resumed last week. “The city has developed a staged approach to reopening our libraries’ doors to its members that prioritises public and employee safety,” Manager of Libraries and Learning, Suzie Gately, said. “We’ll start with reopening the Newcastle and Wallsend branches to library members on 15 June, limiting the number of customers inside to allow for social distancing and we will monitor browsing and attendance time using a ‘Library Express’ model.” City of Newcastle states the libraries’ membership has increased by more than 1,000 during the pandemic to 93,640. This follows a 213% increase in usage of an online learning package offered through Newcastle Libraries, with 2,291 sessions streamed free of charge in April alone.

Trick to planting trees in smaller gardens It won’t be long until the shortest day of the year, not allowing for many sunny warm days in the garden, yet this can be an ideal time to plant deciduous trees and other hardy ornamentals which the cold won’t damage. I’ve had enquiries about a particular tree covered in pink flowers, which have been noticeable driving up City Road, Merewether. The trees are Koelreutaria paniculata, better known as the Golden Rain Tree, and the pink flowers are actually seed pods which remain for many months after the mid-summer flowers of golden yellow make way for the pink pods. The Koelreutaria is a very strong tree which handles a wide range of climates from hot and dry through to cold and wet - it does prefer acidic soil. There are many flowering ornamentals that can be planted now which also fruit belonging to the Prunus family, some of which have purple foliage. Although flowering cherries are loved by gardeners, I fi nd that not many blooms are produced in coastal areas, but those planted in
cooler climates, such as the Hunter Valley, will be more rewarding. One of my favourite trees to plant during winter are those of the Malus family, commonly known as Crab Apples - I have planted these virtually on the coast but with protection from the house. They are available in various sizes and flower colours - if you would like to plant one, I had great success with Malus ionensis plena. Generally, deciduous trees don’t achieve the brilliant autumn shades as those grown south or in the colder regions, but, surprisingly, there are three beautifully coloured trees, planted by the council in Morgan Street, Merewether - they are Fraxinus oxycarpa ‘Raywood’. Magnolias, deciduous and evergreens can be planted out now - I fi nd evergreens, such as ‘Teddy Bear’, like to be settled in before the heat of summer. The secret to planting out any trees in suburban smaller gardens is to check the height they grow, keeping in mind fruiting trees need full sun.
