This week... From the editor I grew up as a huge fan of the Newcastle Knights. I’m sure I would’ve driven our neighbours crazy at times when I used to kick and chase the footy in the front garden and tried to re-enact some of the Johns brothers plays from the weekend. While I didn’t end up playing rugby league – my long neck and skinny frame were valid reasons behind my parents’ decision to sign me up for soccer at a young age – I still followed the ups and downs of the game from a distance. It has been difficult to watch the Knights’ struggles and the numerous false dawns over the past decade. However, without wanting to put the mockers on the team, Newcastle’s 14-all draw with Penrith on Sunday was everything supporters want to see – guts, determination and pride in the jersey. This week’s cover features a wellknown Knights old boy, Mark Hughes, and his sleepy sidekick Clifford. The current climate is proving tough for everyone, including charities, but the Mark Hughes Foundation will be grateful for any support received from the community during this year’s Beanies for Brain Cancer campaign. news Generous bequest a win for the arts, medical research Valerie Ryan loved her friends, her family, the arts and Newcastle. That love is now reflected in what’s believed to be the largest bequest in the Hunter’s history. On behalf of herself and late husband John, Ms Ryan left more than $20 million in her will to the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation (NAGF). Their niece, Megan McManus, said Ms Ryan’s love for art developed through her neighbour, former Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation Chair, Judy Hart, after John went into care. “Aunty Val was a little bit lost at the time and Judy took her down to the art gallery for all the events and they treated her like a queen – it gave her pleasure in her later years,” Ms

McManus said. “Uncle John wanted to give to science, so this was her little bit from Uncle John.” Mr Ryan, who passed away in 2009, was a metallurgist and established a coat hanger factory in Newcastle, while Valerie owned a ballet store and taught shorthand and typing at TAFE. As a couple, they invested wisely in property and stocks. Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation Chair, Suzie Galwey, said Valerie had been a long-time supporter of the foundation and the bequest would be a “transformational gift”. “Valerie became a foundation member in 2009 and became the highest level of support, a foundation governor, in 2014,” Ms Galwey said. “During her life she gave us

significant works of art for the gallery, such as those of Brett Whiteley, William Dobell and Joseph Lycett, and contributed to a lot of projects close to her heart. “She was someone that very much loved the gallery, so this is an incredible legacy that’s going to mean so much to the gallery and Newcastle’s arts and culture into the future.” HMRI Director, Professor Tom Walley, said the donation was “immeasurable”. “This gives us the opportunity to take on some major projects, either

news Community rallies as twins search for road to recovery For Oscar and Felix Stewart, life as two-year-old’s is a little bit different. The Newcastle-based twins have an undiagnosed rare genetic neurological condition that, devastatingly, is likely to result in a shorter life expectancy. Mum Melissa Caelli says the boys are still very reliant on herself and dad, Matthew Stewart. “They are two-and-halfyears-old, but they have a global development delay which means, developmentally wise, they are about six months old,” she says. The boys are unable to stand or walk, so they roll or commando crawl to get around. “It’s challenging for them, but they are very happy and laid back beautiful little boys,” Melissa says.

“The reality of it is, in terms of what to expect in the future, we live under a big question mark. “The specialists and doctors have all advised that they expect them to regress at some point and their condition is expected to shorten their life expectancy.” The family’s team of doctors, including staff at John Hunter Hospital, have completed a genome and exome test on Felix’s DNA after an MRI, lumbar puncture, and urine and blood testing last year. While the MRI showed that Felix had less white brain matter than he should, the tests did not lead to a diagnosis. Oscar is set to undergo the same tests later this year to see if they can indicate anything different. The team hopes that, because he

is a little bit older, something may show up. While Oscar and Felix receive funding under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to purchase equipment and fund therapies, there are some added costs that it doesn’t cover. To help them through this struggle, their close friend Annette Ferguson, who played matchmaker for the couple, decided to start a GoFundMe page to raise money for

the family. “They’ve both been doing [it for] so long on their own and they aren’t the type to ask for help,” Annette says. So far, more than $12,000 has been raised for the family and every single cent will go towards giving the boys everything they need. Warm gesture in tough times From the fight of his life, Mark Hughes has built a foundation dedicated to saving the lives of others. Diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013, the former Newcastle Knight is now at the forefront of scientific research into the disease thanks to fundraising through his charity, the Mark Hughes Foundation. It is seven years since the foundation started its annual Beanies for Brain Cancer initiative. “When we came up with the idea, we were hopeful and thought: ‘Beanies for Brain Cancer’, the words went quite well together, it was catchy,” Hughes tells Newcastle Weekly. “We started out with kids wearing beanies to school and, when that took off, we set about designing a beanie and it’s gone from there. “We couldn’t plan or dream of the support that was to come.” Almost a decade later, the foundation has sold more than 500,000 beanies. “We drive the car down the street and see people walking in our beanies, especially in Newcastle, and it’s the same in the coalfields, I even see them down in

Sydney,” Hughes says. “It’s really special to see that type of support. “While people are buying beanies, it really means more than that, it offers hope for brain cancer, so it’s a really good way people can get behind the cause and get something for it, a warm beanie for winter.” This year is a little different for the foundation, with a challenging lead up to the fundraiser due to COVID-19. “It’s a trying time for everyone and a tough time for charities – we are lucky we have something we can still do but we are mindful everyone’s circumstances are different,” he says. “People have their own worries, drought, fires, COVID-19, it’s been a tough year and our message is, if you’re in a position to support us, great. “If not, we fully understand.” Donations from last year’s fundraiser have gone towards the creation of the NRL Beanies for Brain Cancer Fellowship, a three-year research position at the Children’s Medical Research Institute. “Last year, we had $1.6 million in

Sharing a love of the ocean and all its treasures was the inspiration behind a new artwork installed at Redhead Beach last week. The trio of murals, the handiwork of local artist Daniel Joyce, were installed as part of a Smart Beaches project. The colourful creations, including an 8.5 metre by 2.5 metre painting featured on the side of the Redhead Beach Surf Lifesaving Club storage shed, is also a clever piece of art. The murals highlight beach conditions, incorporating technology providing realtime beach conditions and other data generated by Smart Beaches devices. The collection includes Redhead’s iconic shark tower and cliffs, as well as Lake Macquarie City Council lifeguards who patrol the coastal stretch during the beach season.

Accompanying panels to be installed along a low retaining wall on the path leading to the beach depict typical beach scenes and messages of beach safety, while a third artwork will be installed on the surf club building’s eastern side. Smart Beaches Project Manager Tony Blunden said the murals would provide an enduring representation of a pioneering trial spearheaded by the council. Partnering with Northern Beaches Council, University of Technology Sydney and more than a dozen other industry groups and tech companies, the council has spent the past 12 months trialling technology at Redhead Beach and Blacksmiths Beach to help improve public safety, improve user amenity and assist professional lifeguards. Crowd-counting cameras and weather sensors were among the devices trialled at the two beaches, and at Shelly Beach and Manly Beach in Sydney. The project received $910,000 in funding under round two of the Federal Government’s Smart Cities and Suburbs Program. The funding agreement included an allocation for a permanent artwork at one of the trial beaches. Joyce, who has been painstakingly painting beachthemed murals for more than 20 years, spent upwards of 160 hours creating the Redhead Beach artworks in his studio nearby. “Local knowledge of the beach, and all its beauty and danger, together with regular on-site meetings with lifeguards and Council to fine-tune details of the project, has really helped,” he said. “If any part of this artwork piques the attention of a member of the community and assists in possibly saving someone’s life or preventing an incident, then this project has been a success.” The digital monitor within this display is on track for installation in August, prior to the 2020-21 beach season. - Rebecca Riddle

Wise to water in cool conditions Winter has arrived, although during May it felt like it already had, and gardens have been getting more attention than usual as we have been avoiding the virus, complying with the government and health departments warnings. As the soil temperatures become colder, plant growth does slow down, but winter is an ideal time to complete reconstruction of new gardens, correction of drainage problems, highlighted by recent rains. Don’t be deceived now the weather is cooler into thinking it isn’t necessary to water – it is wise to water in the morning to give soils a chance to warm up before night. Remember potted plants which are undercover don’t get rain and, if establishing new plants, they will require a daily drink.

Now to pruning. Please don’t be tempted to prune roses during June – they may be looking untidy but resist until next month; just apply a handful of dolomite to sweeten the soil. Most trees and shrubs will object to being pruned during winter, particularly areas subjected to frost. Abelia, pumbago and grapes, both fruiting and ornamental could be pruned now. If pruning spring flowering trees at this time, take care not to cut out wood that will bloom in spring. Tropical plants should not be pruned during winter as the cold will burn them. Sasanqua camellias are still flowering - they are wonderful as a specimen, for espaliering and for screening along a narrow driveway. Once they have finished flowering, they can be

pruned into a dense hedge and fertilised with cow manure to encourage new growth. Don’t forget to disbud Japonica camellias, which will begin to bloom during June. This process is to encourage better flowers and to give buds space to open. Once spring bulbs begin to emerge, remember to fertilise to encourage better flowers. Pansies will begin to bloom through winter – apply Flourish weekly to encourage growth and flowering. It is now time to assess watering of houseplants – there are some varieties, such as the ficus family, that don’t like too much water during winter, whereas others, such as ferns, particularly in heated rooms, will require misting to prevent evaporation.

Laundry tips for winter Laundry is a year-round chore but, in the cold, wet winter months it can be a challenge getting your items dry. Natasha D’Cruz, home living category manager at AMES Australasia, shares flexible ways to do your laundry that won’t put your home style on the line. Design for damp Heated towel rails are ideal for drying clothes, especially overnight to take advantage of off-peak electricity pricing. This gives you the added advantage of having moisture in a room designed for damp. However, wherever you choose to dry your clothes, make sure air is circulating to avoid mould. Squash into small wet areas Placing an airer in the bath or a large shower unit will avoid clothes dripping on the floor, perfect for handwashed

laundry which tends to be more waterlogged. You could also consider retractable lines over baths or in shower units to stop messy puddles from forming. Keep your clothes on the go There’s no rule that says you have to hang your clothes in the same space. Mobile airers allow you to move your drying around the home. Better yet, the unit can be put on a balcony by day and quickly wheeled in if it starts to rain. Look to the skies (or at least the ceiling) There are now innovative clotheslines that open up ceiling space and are perfectly suited to garages and covered outdoor areas. These lines feature one frame, with a number of lines, that is hoisted up on all four corners by a central pulley.
