This week... From the editor I went into Stockland Green Hills on the weekend (I immediately regretted my decision to do this at lunchtime on Saturday) and waited patiently outside a shop, which was at maximum capacity under the current coronavirus restrictions. After a mere five-minute wait, I was allowed in and welcomed by the friendly staff, who, unfortunately, had been verbally abused throughout the day by other customers who were asked to wait outside. This is a common occurrence, and we are not immune either. We appreciate the passion and frustration felt by many of our readers over the current absence of the TV Guide, and most callers have been polite and allowed us to explain the situation. Some, however, have not. To those readers who are missing your free TV Guide inside your free Newcastle Weekly magazine, please know it is very minor collateral damage in the global economic downturn caused by COVID-19. For many women across the Hunter, the coronavirus pandemic has left them more isolated than ever. Domestic violence victims, who used to have opportunities to leave home to attend school, work or recreational activities, have been forced to spend more time alone with the perpetrator of abuse. Carrie’s Place Specialist Domestic

Violence Program Manager, Karen McKenzie, says the service has experienced an increase in women requesting help for safety planning to stay at home. Safety planning is thinking about things you can do to be safer when living with violence or abuse. “We believe the increase in requests for personal and home

safety planning is because women feel this is the only option to manage their safety in this time,” Ms McKenzie says. “Leaving or relocating is not an option for many women at this time and specialist crisis accommodation has been limited across the region due to COVID-19 health and hygiene considerations.” She adds that the Hunter Valley Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service (WDVCAS) has not seen an increase in police referral. “While there is certainly not a drop in police referrals, the fact that there is no significant increase is in contrast to what is being experienced in some WDVCAS areas across the state,” she says. “We believe this may be due to a reluctance or ability to report to police because of the increased

safety risks of being in isolation with the person using violence and having limited opportunity to access their usual support networks.” She also believes that having limited options for leaving the home or addressing the violence and other financial factors are forcing victims to stay silent. She adds it is important for the community to provide support in any way they can. “The most vital thing community members can do is listen and believe someone who is reaching out for help,” she says. “It is also important for all community members to say NO to violence and not excuse violence in any form.” If you or someone you know is at immediate risk, call the police or, if it’s more safe to do so, contact the national helpline – 1800 RESPECT. - Elizabeth Symington

news Illegal dirt bike stunts “an accident waiting to happen” Jake Smith says it’s only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt on one of our city’s pathways. The regular walker, who is too afraid to use his real name, believes a dirt bike gang that is terrorising his chosen pathway is “an accident waiting to happen”. Mr Smith walks the shared pathway between New Lambton and Wallsend daily. The young Lambton resident says a group of youths who ride dirt bikes along the 12-kilometre track are a community threat. “It’s the same group that’s terrorising all three suburbs,” he said. “Older ladies have been clipped, women with prams have been nearly run over and countless people have been punched, kicked, spat on and

had threats of abuse from the gang.” Mr Smith said the riders were illegal and dangerous. “They start on the walking/ pushbike track at Lambton and then fly down full speed following the path to Jesmond Park. “Then they take the back way to Wallsend. They don’t care who is on the path, man, woman or child they will aim at you full speed.” The group of youths are believed to be aged between 10 and 19. “Some even look as young as eight,” Mr Smith said. “And it’s because they’re so young that people are afraid to say something. “The police say: ‘Unless you call us, we can’t do anything’ but everyone knows they’re young enough to just get a smack on the

wrist and that’s it, then we’ll face the repercussions.” Mr Smith believes vulnerable community members are at the greatest risk but finding a solution has so far been unfruitful. “The worst I’ve seen is the older ladies, they’re out walking their little dogs and they almost get knocked out of the way,” he said. “They shorten the dog’s lead, but they are still freaking out that one of them will get hurt, or worse.

“I thought speed bumps might take the joy out of it, but the council said it would be a liability for them and the police say they’d be liable if they chase them and one of them gets injured. “It’s like everybody’s hands are tied.” A City of Newcastle spokesperson said they were aware of the problem and were working with police to find a solution. - Rebecca Riddle

cover story Nation’s week-long show of support for reconciliation It’s been a long journey towards shaping a more just, equitable and reconciled nation. Not-for-profit organisation Reconciliation Australia marks two decades since its formation this week. That same year, 2000, more than 250,000 people walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge in a show of support for meaningful reconciliation between Australia’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Today, National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated by businesses, schools and early learning services, as well as organisations and individuals across the country from 27 May to 3 June. All Saints’ College, St Mary’s Campus, Maitland, is one of many

schools in the Hunter that will host events throughout NRW. Aboriginal Education Support Teacher, Col Love, said the theme for 2020 – In This Together – was highly appropriate. “That’s the COVID theme and it’s what reconciliation is all about – trying to get rid of injustices and inadequacies,” he said. The theme highlights that all Australians have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation and, in doing so, collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures. Mr Love said St Mary’s Campus would normally organise gatherings and assemblies to celebrate NRW but was unable to do so because of

the coronavirus pandemic. However, he added most of the activities had been moved online. “Each tutor group will have a prayer or a YouTube clip – one of them will show [former Prime Minister] Kevin Rudd’s apology speech from 2008 – and we’ve got other material that they will read and a few posters around the school,” he said. In 1993, a Week of Prayer for Reconciliation kick-started NRW and, three years later, the Council

for Aboriginal Reconciliation launched Australia’s first event. Mr Love believed it had brought about many positive changes. “The awareness is so much better [now] – the changes I’ve seen are unbelievable,” he said. “There is still a long way to go but there’s a much better understanding of what National Reconciliation Week is all about.” Visit reconciliation.org.au for more information. - Ben Murphy

Artists set to transform facility A 10-metre exterior wall of the soon-to-be-built Multi Arts Place (MAP) in Speers Point Park is set to provide a giant blank canvas for artists, designers or other creatives. Lake Macquarie City Council Manager for Arts, Culture and Tourism, Jacqui Hemsley, said the facade would be constructed from a material that allowed for creative applications and could be patterned to capture shadow and shade, incorporate a repeated motif or be a

free form design. “The design could also be a narrative that reflects Lake Macquarie’s natural environment or the city’s cultural and social heritage,” she said. More than 400,000 people visit Speers Point Park annually, with the precinct a focal point for major events, family outings and tourism. Ms Hemsley said MAP would be the first of its kind in NSW, if not Australia.

Wet weather welcome ahead of winter Writing this column while listening to a heavy downpour, it hardly seems possible that a couple of months ago we were on water restrictions and begging for rain. Well, we have gone through extremes and it’s unusual to see the deciduous trees leafless while we are still in autumn. My prediction during summer was for an early cold wet winter. After this wonderful rain, hopefully sunny days will return as this is an ideal time to plant out new trees and shrubs, particularly this year as the ground is now so moist. Rain, though welcome, will have leached out many elements from the soil. Roses and lawns, and indeed all garden beds, should be given an application of dolomite to sweeten the soil after the rain. Acid loving plants, such as camellias and gardenias, will respond to an application of chelated iron and peat moss around the roots surface. Once winter arrives Camellia japonicas will bloom and currently be heavy with buds, often too many to open. Look at disbudding now to

encourage better blooms – this simply means removing one or two buds from the group which are too prolific. Don’t feed camellias at this time; merely apply peat moss around the root ball. This also applies to camellias being grown in pots. Keep working at large clusters of perennials such as clivias and agapanthus – they will respond to division and fertilising with Organic Life. Don’t forget the tulips and hyacinths on the fridge. All spring bulbs need to be planted now. It is a little early to plant new season reason, but the garden can be prepared with new soil and mushroom compost. Add lime if the soil is acidic. Never plant new roses in fertilised soil as this will burn their new shoots. One of my favourite plants, just beginning to bloom during May, are Cymbidium orchids. They provide great colour for inside and are just as happy, in a sheltered spot on patios.

THIS WEEK • It is time to eliminate winter grass. Appearing as pretty, green tufts of grass, they soon produce seed heads which multiply prolifically. • Roses will need a pre-winter application of Sudden Impact to keep them blooming and fighting off the black spot which the rain will compound. • Watering of indoor plants needs to be controlled carefully now that home heating has started. This applies particularly to ferns, especially Maiden Hairs which will require a daily mist.
