This week... From the editor It’s been a long week. Each day, there’s a new development or update on the infamous COVID-19 and my inbox is being bombarded with all kinds on information on the current pandemic. While we aim to keep you informed as much as possible during these challenging times, we also want to provide you with some uplifting, community-focused news. University of Newcastle’s Pro Vice-Chancellor Education and Arts, Professor John Fischetti, offers some valuable tips on how students can embrace and benefit from studying at home; and Newcastle-based skateboarder Poppy Starr Olsen discusses the decision to postpone the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games until next year. Our cover star this week, Karen Aubrey, is a member of the Lake Macquarie Winds – a community band filled with like-minded individuals who share a common love of music. news Bridge marks milestone in flood plan for Wallsend The completion of a new $3.3 million bridge in Wallsend has been hailed as a milestone in a project that will bring “generational change” for the suburb. The Tyrrell Street bridge was unveiled at the weekend, marking an important step in addressing flooding in Wallsend. The project saw the demolition of the former smaller and lower structure, which was built in 1930. It was replaced with a 26.6-metrelong two-span, two-lane concrete plank bridge as part of City of Newcastle’s ongoing process of flood mitigation and renewal works. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes thanked the community for its patience and cooperation during the construction phase. “The Wallsend community has

been hit hard during the past decade from flash flooding,” she said. “This is why we prioritised this [project] in what is a long-term, generational change project in Wallsend.” Replacing Tyrrell Street Bridge forms part of the council’s Ironbark Creek Flood Mitigation Plan, which proposes another two bridges at Boscawen Street and Nelson Street be replaced, increasing the flow capacity at the Cowper Street Bridge, and planning for how Hunter Water’s channel can be widened to allow better water flow during heavy rainfall. Ward Four Councillor Jason Dunn said the project was also the starting point of a larger program of works to benefit residents, businesses, property owners, and

visitors to the suburb. He added a long-term vision for the renewal of the Wallsend local centre was starting to take place following the adoption of the Wallsend Local Centre Public Domain and Traffic Plan. “The plan aims to increase safety for pedestrians, cyclists and traffic, as well as improve amenity, accessibility and connectivity for the community,” he said.

“We’ll be having a conversation with the community about how the plan takes shape and what the ideal future for Wallsend looks like, including heritage preservation, more seating and shade, greener streets, and public access to technology like Wi-Fi.” The council also plans to restore ageing infrastructure, such as roads, footpaths, lighting and draining, throughout the town centre.

news Support group for sufferers of genetic heart conditions Sara Catena was searching for support when she decided to put plans in motion to create a new group. The Genetic Heart Group is available for anyone who has a genetic heart condition within the Hunter Region. Sara lives with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC), which makes living her life different to the majority of those around her. “It’s a disease in the heart muscle, where the heart muscle starts to get replaced by fat and scar tissue, making it harder for the heart to pump properly, and it also causes rhythm disturbances,” she says. “I’ve had moments where I’ve broken down and gone: ‘Why me?’ “But, after time, you figure out

how your body is going to react and know the warning signs and the signals and then you kind of get used to it and what wasn’t the normal becomes normal.” Sara met with Dr Anne Ronan, Angela Ingrey, Rachel March, Alichea Archer and Blake Glennie to brainstorm ideas for the support network. It was in this meeting that the Genetic Heart Group came to life. The participants decided to create a Facebook group to recruit members and spread the word that a support group for people with a genetic heart condition was available in the region. The group aims to encourage connections and helps members share their experiences. “It’s nice to know that you are

not going through all of this by yourself,” Sara says. “Someone else has gone through the same thing or a similar thing and it’s a little bit comforting [knowing] people out there have the same condition or a similar condition to me [and] I can talk to them about it and not feel so alone and isolated.” The group supports people living with ARVC, Brugada Syndrome, Catecholaminergic

Polymorphic VT (CPVT), Familial Dilated Cardiomyopathy (FDCM), Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Left Ventricular Noncompaction (LVNX) and Long QT Syndrome (LQTS). It also hopes to raise awareness. Sara says that, once they have enough members, they’ll be able to organise face-to-face meetings for the chance “to meet and connect with one another”. Students to step up during coronavirus pandemic Parents are being urged to keep their children home as the coronavirus pandemic hits the education sector. Despite the ever-changing situation, the University of Newcastle’s Pro Vice-Chancellor Education and Arts, Professor John Fischetti, wants students to know that they will get through this period. “Our imagination will get us through,” he says. “Our patience, kindness and flexibility will all be tested [but we will] get our confidence back.” Professor Fischetti has several tips for parents and students to help them get through this difficult time. “Embrace the opportunity,” he says. “This is a new chapter to help your child be successful. “It could be really special and memorable. “Use it to do what we often say we don’t have time to do – be with your kids. “Stick to a routine every day – get up in the morning and get ready like your children are going to school, create a space where the work can take place [and] be organised.” Professor Fischetti says parents also need to ensure their children

are taking the right breaks, have a balanced diet, and are getting enough sleep and exercise. He believes that families should look to their social network if they need assistance and suggests that, if a student is struggling, then a call to someone who can help, like a grandparent or neighbour, might make a big difference. He adds access to resources can be an issue for many families but thinks that tapping into this network and working with the school will provide some alternatives. Ultimately, Professor Fischetti believes this style of education is the way of the future and, once society has a handle on the pandemic, “schools as we know them may change dramatically”. He adds parents need to ask their kids to “step up” to help protect our nation’s most vulnerable. “There were generations before them who were sent to go to war and the pressure for them was life and death,” he says. “We will get through to the other side and we might learn a lot of new things on the way. “This is very unusual, but we are blessed to have this opportunity.” - Elizabeth Symington

Push to keep Valentine’s hydrotherapy pools afloat The future of the Valentine Hydrotherapy and Swim Centre is in doubt after more than 50 years of operation. Valentine Hydrotherapy Pools Secretary John McGrath says the cost of maintaining the pools has become too much and believes Lake Macquarie City Council will need to take over the facility. “After 54 years of operation, run by a charity, the expenses have got to a level that can no longer be sustained,” he says. “We can handle day-to-day operations but it’s the bigger stuff that we can no longer maintain. “We approached the council to take over the pool 18 months ago and, on 14 April, they will vote on a proposal to take over the running of this facility.” Mr McGrath is concerned the vote will lead to a rejection. A Lake Macquarie council spokesperson says it has been working with the charity’s committee to try and reduce operating costs. “The council has been working with the committee of Valentine Hydrotherapy Pools Inc since 2017 in an effort to reduce the operating costs of the pool, as well as investigating opportunities to gain funding to assist in making some repairs and improvements to the facility,” the spokesperson says. “More recently, the committee has made it clear to the council that

they do not see their management model being sustainable and have requested council to investigate the incorporation of the Valentine hydrotherapy pool into its network of council-managed swim centres.” Mr McGrath adds that, while they have enough funds to get through the next six months, if council rejects the proposal, the pool will permanently close. “[That] would be a catastrophic loss to the community,” he says. “We’ve got more than 800 hydrotherapy patients who rely on the service and hundreds of children who attend swimming lessons. “We’ve got approximately 119,000 visitations per year. “It caters to a whole lot of people in terms of injuries that need therapy and people who need lessons. “Paralympians train at the pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays and young children who have been referred to us from John Hunter Hospital also receive treatment.” Valentine Hydrotherapy Pools Inc is asking the community for help. news Projects to share funding Community projects across the region will share crucial funds after making successful bids for a State Government grant. In the Lake Macquarie electorate, a total of 27 projects gained financial support under the Community Building Partnership program, which was worth $300,000 this year. Among the successful groups are the Scouts Association of Australia – NSW Branch for an upgrade to its Carey Bay/Toronto Scout Hall; Toronto Public School P&C Association for the renovation of an early intervention playground; Cardiff Junior Rugby League; South Cardiff Football Club; Speers Point Amateur Sailing Club; and Survivors R Us. Lake Macquarie City Council will receive funds to upgrade and air condition public halls at Bolton Point, Kilaben Bay, Lakelands

and Wyee, while Wangi Men’s Shed and Woodrising Natural Learning Centre are also among the recipients. In Charlestown, 16 projects have been successful under the program, including Windale P&C Association and Redhead Community Preschool. The Lions Club of Charlestown, Redhead Bowling Club, and Charlestown Child Care and Early Learning Centre are also on the list. Charlestown State MP Jodie Harrison said the government funding would deliver muchneeded improvements to local facilities, including the likes of Lake Macquarie Junior Cricket Club, which was awarded $40,000 for cricket net upgrades. “These new practice nets will provide the club’s youngest members with state-of-the-art practice facilities,” Ms Harrison

news Charity sailing regatta races to new fundraising record A charity regatta has overcome a backdrop of bushfires and drought to sail to a new fundraising record. The annual Heaven Can Wait (HCW) Charity Sailing Regatta, hosted by the Royal Motor Yacht Club Toronto at Lake Macquarie last month, posted a total of $46,000, overtaking the previous best effort from 2018. Race Director Mel Steiner said organisers had been bracing for a tough year of fundraising. “Bushfires and drought had sucked up a lot of the available charity dollars and, combined with the view that people were doing it tough, we fully expected the fundraising effort to be down on previous years,” he said. The funds will go to the Hunter Branch of Cancer Council NSW’s

Home Help Program, which supports both recovering and terminal cancer patients who are unable to perform their domestic duties because of their condition, as well as Lake Macquarie Marine Rescue. The HCW offers up some unique sailing, whether it be the Classic One Lap Dash – a quick jaunt around the cans covering the length and breadth of the lake – or the 24-Hour Endurance Race over the same course. The event’s charity dinner traditionally features local yachting personalities and renowned ABC Newcastle sports commentator Helene O’Neil as guests. However, the 2020 edition included a special panel of five women – three of whom competed in their first Sydney to Hobart a year

“In the 2020 HCW, we had another first – an all-women crew competing, and I applaud their participation.” This year’s HCW saw 55 boats registered to compete. Knights to land key signing St George Illawarra forward Tyson Frizell has agreed to join Newcastle on a three-year deal starting in season 2021. The NSW and Australian representative accepted terms with the Knights in January. Thousands of athletes across the country have seen their Olympic dreams put on hold. The 2020 Olympic Games, set to take place in Tokyo, has been postponed until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement was made last week in a conference between International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, Thomas Bach, and Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe. Newcastle-based skateboarder Poppy Starr Olsen, who was primed to make her Olympic debut, said she understood the decision. “I think I kind of saw it coming to be honest, that or it being cancelled,” she said. “I think it’s the best decision to ensure everyone’s safety [and] I can’t see that there was any other option.” Poppy said she was not sure

Band brings together young and old Its members may be far apart in age, but they all share a common love of music. The Lake Macquarie Winds band, formed in 1977, has been bringing together the young and the old for decades. Member Karen Aubrey, who has played with the band for more than 40 years, says she has created some wonderful memories with the group. “Most memorable of these would be the time we travelled to Adelaide and successfully participated in the national titles,” she says. “I also remember the impromptu concerts we performed while sightseeing and many other fun times.” She adds that being a band member “provides a great opportunity to socialise and play

music with others who share a common interest”. At just 16-years-old, Sarah Bernasconi is one of the band’s youngest members. She says it is a privilege to be a part of the group and that music is a big part of her life. “My love of music is something that I live daily through constant flute practice, listening to all genres of music, and singing,” she says. “Music helps me think creatively and logically, which is a massive help with my academic studies. “Logic aside, music provides me with an emotional escape that is rarely found in anything else that I do for fun.” Bernasconi is lucky enough to be mentored by more experienced members, including Aubrey and

With the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the nation, companies are mobilising to allow employees to work from home. However, after interacting with colleagues for eight hours a day, working from home is a massive change which can present new challenges for many of us. Newcastle-based recruitment and human resources professional Jillian Asquith offers some general tips to help you look after yourself and stay productive during this time.

Don’t work on the lounge Trying to work from bed or sitting on the lounge is not conducive to being productive. It also doesn’t signal to the mind or body that it’s time to work. In an office environment we may stop to have a chat on our way to grab a coffee or get something off the printer. It is also easier to seek clarification and build collaboration when we’re working side by side. When working remotely, it is important to schedule regular team meetings as well as reaching out to create impromptu, short and informal ones. Having virtual coffee catch ups and lunches is also a great way to maintain camaraderie. While you may feel hesitant to initiate contact, you might just help a colleague or friend who is feeling particularly isolated or anxious.

Be kind This is a time of great uncertainty and it is going to have an impact on how each of us think and feel about ourselves and our world. Acknowledging when you feel frightened, frustrated or angry can take some of the power out of these and is cue to take a break and refocus. It is also helpful to limit the amount of media, social and otherwise, that you access. Most importantly and beneficially – be kind to others. Showing empathy supports others during these trying times and shifts negative emotions within yourself into more positive and empowering ones.

Stuck at home? Start working on preparations for winter April is here. Those in isolation will think time is going slowly, but seasonal-wise we are already in the second month of autumn, which is one of the loveliest months for gardening. There are many jobs to do this month in preparation for winter – one of the most important is to remove the fading summer annuals and prepare garden beds and pots ready to plant out pansies, primula and poppies. Anzac Day is the traditional time to plant out poppies, but gardens must be prepared at least one week prior to planting by digging in poultry manure and an all-purpose plant food. Pots will need fresh potting mix – plant a mix of primula and pansies for a colourful winter display. Winter vegetables, which I must warn you are in very short supply this year due to high demand and, I imagine, a production slowdown during the drought, prefer an alkaline soil –

hence the use of poultry manure. The most requested is silver beet and spinach, which generally have a 20% dumpage rate. It is a mystery, perhaps because so many are unfortunately spending time at home. Like vegetables, spring bulbs will also be hard to source as some major suppliers have shut down due to the virus. It may be possible to obtain bulbs from The Diggers Club at Dromana in Victoria, which supplies by post. This year we should all be happy to see deciduous trees drop their leaves as, during the drought, many looked sad due to lack of water. My catalpa standards are extremely brown and will enjoy a winter rest. When the trees drop their leaves, don’t forget they are a valuable source of mulch. Don’t rake them up and send them to landfi ll – either compost them or simply leave the dropped

foliage to return goodness to the soil as Mother Nature intended. This is an ideal month to divide perennials like over-crowded agapanthus, clivia, iris and violets, all of which can be split successfully. Perhaps lonely neighbours may like a surprise left on their doorstep during this worrying time. Stuck indoors? Check out your houseplants – some may need repotting or feeding, which should be done by the end of April. In our coastal areas, we don’t get many trees displaying autumn foliage, though the Sasanqua camellias are just beginning to bloom. These plants are hardy and great for hedging, growing in the full sun or shade. They have missed our normal rainfall this year but are great survivors – an application of peat moss around their root surface will be most beneficial.

Kala Chand is the owner of Newcastle Positive Pebbles – a small art project in which the Novocastrian donates rocks painted with positive messages to mental health facilities within the city. After joining forces with a group of psychologists, the 23-year-old developed a range of affirmations designed for mental health clients at a centre for psychology and quickly started working on her positive pebbles. She then began dropping them at different spots around the Hunter Region to bring a smile to people’s faces. Since July 2019, Kala has donated more than 1,000 rocks and pebbles to organisations such as headspace Newcastle, Hunter Primary Care, and Warners Bay Lakeside Hospital. Her work aims to positively shape clients’ lives by reminding them of what they can do and helping them fight self-destructive urges and behaviours.

POSITIVE PEBBLES SUNRISE I love watching and photographing the sunrise over Newcastle Beach at least once a week – it’s such a beautiful sight.
