Off the field, numerous women throughout the nation were recognised for their tireless work as part of the IWD celebrations. I attended Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes’ IWD Morning Tea on Monday, which featured the city’s 2020 Citizen of the Year, Michelle Faithfull, as a guest speaker. Michelle’s story was both heartbreaking and inspiring – a testament to her resilience and kind nature. She has, after all, overcome personal tragedy to raise about $180,000 for various local charities over the past decade. And, she’s not done yet. Both Michelle, and the late Jill Emberson, who was named Newcastle’s 2020 Local Woman of the Year, personify the selflessness and sacrifice that is prevalent across our region. - Ben Murphy

news Campaign shines light on invisible condition For Ellen Parker, living with endometriosis has proven to be a constant struggle. Ellen was diagnosed with the condition in 2016 after almost three years of continuous pain. She says one of the hardest parts of living with the disorder is its fickle nature. “At first it was hard not knowing what it was but now that I have it, I guess it’s the unpredictability,” she says. “For me, one day you can be living a regular life and you can just be walking through the shops, and then you might be in chronic pain the next.” Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the one that forms the uterus lining grows outside of the uterine cavity on

places like the ovaries, fallopian tubes and intestines. The most common symptoms include pain and menstrual irregularities, but it can appear differently for every woman. One in 10 women suffer from the incurable disorder and, according to Endometriosis Australia, it impacts on all aspects of a woman’s life. Ellen believes there is room for more awareness but says society is moving in the right direction. This month marks the worldwide EndoMarch – a four-week campaign to increase awareness and raise funds for research. It includes events such as March Into Yellow, which encourages people who have endometriosis, or know someone who does, to don the colour yellow and promote the condition online.

“I definitely think it’s getting bigger, things like ‘Endo month’ and ‘[March Into] Yellow’ are picking up,” Ellen says. “But I don’t think there is necessarily the same awareness that there is for things like breast cancer, and endo affects [so] many women.” For most women living with endometriosis, it is a struggle because the disease is invisible and symptoms are not always treatable. “There are things you can do

to mask the symptoms, but things come back because there is no cure,” Ellen says. She adds that it is hard when people aren’t aware of the disorder. “It is difficult if people don’t understand what it is or what effects it can have on people and how it can be different for every individual,” she says. news A celebration of women Women across the Hunter Region have been celebrated this past International Women’s Day, which fell on Sunday 8 March. The late Jill Emberson was named Newcastle’s 2020 Local Woman of the Year. Ms Emberson was a Walkley Award-nominated journalist and former Newcastle Citizen of the Year who came to national prominence most recently as a warrior for ovarian cancer awareness. Her activism through the Pink Meets Teal movement has seen more than $20 million raised for ovarian cancer research. In Cessnock, Sonia Sharpe was awarded the title for her dedication to ensuring Aboriginal people have a voice at all levels in the community. She helps local schools and

families with policies that will help children achieve educational goals. Since 2007, Ms Sharpe has been President of Cessnock Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG), assisting families in the Cessnock and Kurri Kurri areas. She was also the chair of the Cessnock Walks Kawuma, a peaceful walk held last year to raise awareness of the impact of domestic and family violence in the local community. In Maitland, foster carer and volunteer Karen Stackman was named the city’s Woman of the Year. As the founder of the Hunter Academy for Performing Arts, an inclusive not-for profit dance studio, Ms Stackman was given the title because of her dedication to the community and volunteer work.

Pooches across the city are calling for help and Dog Rescue Newcastle is answering their plea. The not-for-profit organisation works to rescue neglected and abused companion animals from death row at local pounds. It relies on donations and volunteers to continue rescuing man’s best friend. According to the group, 250,000 companion animals are killed in Australia every year, including 60,000 in NSW alone. “The thought of how many dogs are killed each year is horrible,” Dog Rescue Newcastle’s Meg Reed said. “It’s harrowing to think [about] and it’s heartbreaking. “We’re working to reduce that number; the ultimate goal would be zero.” Mrs Reed adds that, with around 180 foster carers, the organisation

needs more volunteers. “We are desperate for foster carers – the more we have, the more dogs we can save,” she said. “When dogs go into a regional pound, animals that are microchipped have 14 days to be rescued – ones that aren’t have seven, and others that are surrendered can be put down straight away.” Volunteers work to save the dogs lives by fostering them until a suitable adoptive owner is found. Every animal they foster is adopted out unless they suffer from major behavioural or health issues. These dogs then become sponsor dogs and are kept by the organisation. Becoming a foster carer is completely free. Dog Rescue Newcastle covers all the costs from food to vet bills.

Mrs Reed said being a foster carer was a rewarding experience. “You have a great opportunity to see a dog blossom in a safe and caring environment that they might not have experienced before,” she said. Interested parties can apply online and, once a yard check is completed to make sure the area is suitable for the rescue, people can start fostering. The organisation will host its inaugural Dog Rescue Newcastle Fur Ball on Saturday 23 May in a bid to raise funds and awareness. It will be a night of “full glam” for a good cause. news Companionship empowers mothers in difficult times It’s a place where families can transition from difficult times to a brighter future. Mums’ Cottage, a not-for-profit community service in the Hunter Region, was established to empower mothers amid an increase in societal demands and expectations placed upon them. The organisation knew that, once a mother had been assisted, companioned and offered hope within a welcoming environment, she then gained a sense of purpose, which created a positive effect on her children and her self-worth. From humble beginnings, Mums’ Cottage provides access to mentors, disability services, legal and financial guidance, case coordination, health care, parenting programs, and combined family

events. It also helps find emergency accommodation, clothing, food, and household items. Mums’ Cottage Coordinator, Sister Helen-Anne Johnson, says companionship is one of the facility’s most important aspects. “There are people here who are interested in them and have walked a similar journey to them,” Sister Johnson says. “That helps them grow and gives mothers the best chance to live life to the fullest. “Whoever they are, wherever their journey has taken them, they are here to grow.” After a three-year search to find a suitable location, a contract was signed and renovations began on the Uniting Church hall at Holmesville. news Important step on march to defeat killer disease Novocastrians will take important steps towards beating melanoma this month. A Newcastle Melanoma March, set to take place on Sunday 22 March at the foreshore, Nobbys Beach, will encourage walkers to raise funds, inspire others, and remember lost loved ones. Rutherford-based survivor Tammy Tomkins said it was vital to create more awareness around the illness. Three years ago, Ms Tomkins underwent surgery to remove a beauty spot but, shockingly, it turned out to be a large tumour. “It wasn’t until I came out of surgery that I was told it was an internal tumour,” she said. “I was devastated at first, but I was really glad it was all gone.

“I was thinking about what would have happened with my kids and grandkids.” The 41-year-old said she was glad she made the decision to have it removed. She added that regular skin checks were key to survival because of the uncertainty around a spot. “You might just think ‘I’ve got a freckle here and a freckle there’ but the next thing you know you’re in surgery getting a tumour removed,” she said. “My biggest shock was that I thought I was ok; I was just getting a beauty spot removed. “It’s a serious thing, you need to go and get checked. Skin checks are sorely missed by a lot of people.” The Newcastle Melanoma March team is working hard to raise funds

to increase its current total of just over $5,000. The group will gather at Camp Shortland at the foreshore to raise awareness of the killer disease. In 2019, more than 7,000 people from across the country supported the nationwide event and organisers expect an even bigger attendance this year. Event registration opens at 7.30am, with speeches to follow at

8.40am. The march will start at 9am. Tickets can be purchased online. Cost is $25 for adults, $15 for children aged five to 17, and free for children under five. Participants can also buy tickets on the day, however, they come at a slightly higher cost of $30 for adults and $20 for children. Program makes a splash A local charity is changing the lives of children living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Surfing the Spectrum is a surf therapy initiative which aims to build and sustain inclusive communities while showing that the ocean is for everyone. It runs surf therapy events for children on the spectrum between the ages of five and 18 and their families. Founder Aimee Blacker said it was a great opportunity for people with the disorder to experience the water and enjoy a day out. Ms Blacker and co-founder Tahlia Anderson started the organisation because they had seen the benefits of surf therapy for kids. “We were running annual surfing with autism events,” Ms Blacker said. “Tahlia has a disability support background, I’m an occupational therapist, and we’re both surfers.

“We’ve just seen the benefit it has for kids in a therapeutic sense and how much they were getting out of it compared to other traditional approaches. “It was something we wanted to be doing more often and more regularly and these families needed more access to it.” Ms Blacker added that, while it depended on the child, benefits included better sleep, regulation and higher activity levels. Surfing the Spectrum provides an inclusive and fun program that promotes ocean awareness and water safety. Their volunteers work hard to make everyone comfortable and there is no judgement or pressure on the children and their families. During larger events, they can cater for up to 150 families. Ms Anderson said the program had received phenomenal feedback. “For some families they haven’t

even been to the beach before because it’s such a daunting thought to take their child there,” Ms Anderson said. “Some of the other children or siblings in the family may have also never been, so, for them it’s about coming down to the beach and experiencing it as a family knowing they’ll be fully supported.”

Colourful fish tacos Serves: 4 Prep: 30 mins Cook: 15 mins 1 Tbsp (15ml) extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 tsp smoked or regular paprika 1/2 tsp cumin 1/2 tsp chili powder 1/2 tsp onion powder 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp Himalayan pink salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 cup (60ml) fresh lime juice 1 pound (454g) tilapia 8 corn tortillas 1 cup (90g) shredded purple cabbage, for topping 1 cup (70g) broccoli slaw, for topping Chopped fresh coriander, for topping (optional) Avocado aioli, for topping Limes wedges, for serving

In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, paprika, cumin, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, cayenne, and lime juice. Pour the mixture into a large resealable plastic bag. Add the tilapia to the resealable bag with the mixture, securely seal and squeeze and shake the bag to coat the fish with the spices. Let the fish marinate in the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes and up to 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Line a large baking sheet with aluminium foil. Place the marinated fish, with the marinade from the bag, onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until the tilapia is fully cooked and easily flakes with a fork. If you would like to add a golden colour to the fish, set it under the broiler for 3 to 4 minutes, until slightly brown. Remove the pan from the oven and use a fork to break up the fish into bite-size chunks. Set aside. Equally divide the fish into 4 containers, storing the tortillas, any toppings, and lime wedges in separate containers and/or resealable plastic bags. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. When you are ready to enjoy the tacos, microwave the fish for 30 to 45 seconds and warm the tortillas in a large skillet over high heat. Top with the cabbage, slaw, and coriander (if using), and serve with the lime wedges and avocado aioli.

Artist paints a creative look at discrimination Newcastle artist Megan Adams was heart-broken when she first witnessed racism. Discrimination and the fight for racial equality is now the fire that burns within her and forms the basis of many of her fine art pieces. In April, the Maitland-born artist will enter her latest oil painting entitled Gawurra in the Archibald Prize 2020, Australia’s most prestigious art prize originating in 1921. The 162cm by 138cm linen canvas is a portrait incorporating the face of Indigenous musician Gawurra with a sunset over the ocean in his homeland Milingimbi Island, off the coast of Arnhem Land. Adams said the piece represented

the two cultures that Gawurra ‘walked in’. “Gawurra’s face is painted in different colours, highlighting the concept of judging a person on the content of their character rather than the colour of their skin,” she said. In 2017, the professional artist, who employs a unique layering technique with her creations, painted former AFL player Adam Goodes, continuing the anti-racism theme. Goodes, a celebrated player and former Australian of the Year, is an advocate for stamping out racism within Australian culture and supports several Indigenous education programs. “I didn’t consciously choose

Ingenuity on display The skills, culture and adaptability of First Nations people will be showcased at Newcastle Museum. Two displays will show the improvisational genius of the famous Bush Mechanics and locally made possum skin cloaks and weaving. Bush Mechanics was a TV phenomenon in 2001 as the documentary series showed the mechanical resourcefulness of Central Australia’s Walpiri men and their humour and music. The four episodes, where they used bush resources as tools and spare parts, were watched by more than three million viewers. Joining this display is a Cultural Resurgence exhibit. This features woven and possum skin works created by local Aboriginal community groups, including, the Mindaribba

Local Aboriginal lands council, the Awabakal Elders group and various school groups with both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students and their teachers with local organisation Speaking in Colour. Newcastle Museum Director Julie Baird said she was excited to have the two exhibitions on display together. “Bush Mechanics, with its desert mob Walpiri way of solving problems and the local Speaking in Colour weaving and possum skin cloaks created by both young and old, allows us to celebrate the culture and ingenuity of our First Nation people,” she said. Personal stylist in your pocket Imagine having your own personal stylist in your pocket 24/7. That’s now a reality thanks to Newcastle-based technology entrepreneur Deanne Hobday, who has created an app called Be You Style. The app works by detecting undertones of skin, warm or cool then deep to light, as well as eye and hair colours. After analysis, it produces a personalised colour swatch – a palette that best suits the user. The app doesn’t just identify colours to suit you but can also tell you what style of clothes suit your body shape and your personality. Ms Hobday hopes it enables people to become the best version of themselves. “Did you know that it takes 27 [seconds to make] a first impression and that we are judged by how we look before we even open our mouths?” she says. “Presentation is everything in this competitive world. “Everyone wants the promotion,

the date, the deal or adoration.” To celebrate International Women’s Day last Sunday, Ms Hobday has announced she will offer the chance for someone to win a styling session valued at $1,000, which includes $100 to spend on new clothes, as well as a free app subscription. She says the competition aims to give back to women within the Hunter community. “I would love to see someone who really needs it win this prize – someone who needs a lift up, a helping hand, someone who knows that we are all special and that a little tweaking of the wardrobe can work wonders,” she says. Olive trees’ proven versatility A commonly asked question about olives is which plant should be purchased: a black or green olive? There are different qualities and flavours, but the simple answer is that the colour determines whether or not they are ripe. Black and green olives are found on a tree together, black being ripe, whilst green needs to be pickled. What a versatile tree. It is wonderful for a Mediterranean style garden, a formal garden, or even a tropical garden. Why is that? It is the colour of the foliage – grey works perfectly with white formal gardens, where lavender is planted with a border of buxus. This also works with a row of white standard Iceberg roses. One of the olives’ best qualities is being hardy and adaptable to coastal conditions as well as hot and dry areas. This hardy tree will grow virtually anywhere in Australia where there is a cool winter and a warm summer. They are happy in average daily maximum

temperature above 30 degrees, but they can survive as high as 50 degrees. Some varieties prefer a winter frost, while some survive and grow well in frost-free areas as long as the winters are cool enough. Be careful when planting out new trees if the temperature falls below minus five degrees. Olives require very little water as an ornamental, but a productive plant will require some watering before spring for a good fruit set. Heavy rain produces better, fleshier table olives – it reduces the oil percentage. The olive is drought hardy, as I have just proved. I hate to admit my olives have been really neglected water-wise but are still growing and happy. They will tolerate most types of soil conditions, preferring a neutral pH. Fertilising is relatively simple – prepare the soil with manure before planting, adding lime if the soil is too acidic, then apply a neutral pH fertiliser annually in autumn/winter.

Next Tuesday is the traditional day to plant sweet peas. • Treat bare patches in the lawn where army grub or the drought has hit… a couple of tricks to get lawns perfect now we have had rain. Fertilise, of course, but also use a lawn top dressing to encourage new growth and water bare patches with Searls Green Flourish, which gives an instant kick. • Dust cabbage plants to deter cabbage moths and butterflies. • Autumn is an ideal time to plant out new trees and shrubs.
