Newcastle Show launches new era
Newcastle Weekly contents
thursday 20 february 2020
This week... From the editor I spent the whole weekend lugging furniture up and down a flight of stairs. It all went relatively smoothly, apart from nearly losing the fridge at one point when my momentary lapse in concentration saw it teeter on the edge of the front landing, narrrowly avoiding rolling down the hill below. This slight mishap – and the constant stress – aside, moving is a nice exercise in decluttering. I can be sentimental at times but, once it comes to moving from one house to another, this all goes out the window and I’ll ruthlessly toss nearly anything, only to slightly regret it later on. In a broader sense, there’s no doubt some Novocastrians will feel sentimental as they reflect on what Newcastle used to be like. The last few years have brought mass changes to the city’s CBD, while the Hunter Region is evolving at a rapid rate. As part of these sweeping changes, organisers of the Newcastle Show have worked hard to revolutionise the 118-year-old event to bring it up to the 2020 era. Some of the new additions this year will include a robotics section, competitive eating, and a Harlem Highlanders strongman and woman competition. You’ll find our cover story about the show on pages 13 and 14. - Ben Murphy

news State government declares Stockton a disaster zone The severe erosion at Stockton Beach has finally received desperately-needed support. The state government declared Newcastle a natural disaster area following extreme weather conditions this month. The news has been welcomed by both City of Newcastle and the community. “I’m glad that the state government has recognised how dire the situation has become,” Save Stockton Beach’s Simon Jones said. “Hopefully the declaration will not only help to quickly implement short-term actions to address the immediate damage, but will also help to raise the profile of our overall problem so that a real longterm solution can be prioritised.”
The declaration means that the City is eligible for assistance through the CommonwealthState Disaster Recovery Fund to help with the cost of cleaning up and restoring the eroded area at Stockton. “We’re pleased that this declaration enables us to deal with the short-term impact, but we will continue to call for urgent support from the Premier, Deputy Premier, Environment and Local Government Ministers to deliver a viable long-term solution,” Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said. “Our immediate priorities are to ensure public safety along the coastal area and to protect public and private assets and property.” Mr Jones said the issue of

erosion had caused “massive stress and anger” and impacted on public attitude and sentiment. “Most people in Stockton would consider a trip to the beach as their right, and the beach forms part of their identity,” he said.
“Personally, almost all of my lifelong friendships have, in some way, been shaped by the beach. “I fear that, for future generations, this will no longer be the case.” Continued on page 8

news Women celebrate surf lifesaving milestone Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) will turn the sea pink to mark an important milestone. Pink Day 2020 aims to empower and encourage females on International Women’s Day - Sunday 8 March. It will also recognise 40 years of women in surf lifesaving, with Nobbys SLSC inviting all club members and the community to come and celebrate the achievement. On 1 July 1980, women were able to become full members after many male lifesavers and their clubs had been persuaded that females could save lives and carry out all responsibilities as well as them. “Pink Day is to empower young girls and women because they do get a bit lost because surf lifesaving is still a little bit blokey,” Event Coordinator Jenny Parlett says. “It’s about saying: ‘Here’s where we are’ and to encourage young girls. “We have a lot of young girls coming through trying to find their way in the world whether it’s through school, bullying or issues that come up and [this is] a day for them to go out in the water

and be supported.” She adds that the event is for anyone and it’s about coming together and being inclusive. Nobbys SLSC President Narelle Blick believes it’s a great thing for women to be involved in surf lifesaving. As the first female President, Ms Blick has been a driving force behind the club’s inclusivity. She says the biggest highlight of her time with the club is the disability program, Little Rippaz, which she started in the 2014-15 season. The program is designed to support children living with disability and teach them surf skills. “It’s beautiful, everyone comes in and volunteers and it’s really great because the volunteers range from young kids in our nippers, to our cadets to the older lifesavers,” Ms Blick says. “I think to make it more inclusive for everyone to come to the beach is the best achievement.” Ms Parlett and Ms Blick encourage women to join a surf lifesaving club, stating it’s something to be proud of. “Have fun, be safe, and be a lifesaver,” Ms

From page 4 Mr Jones believed that a large sand nourishment campaign could help restore the beach to its natural state. He said that studies had shown that the beach had lost almost 10 million cubic metres of sand. Meanwhile, City of Newcastle started emergency works to ensure public safety and protect public and private assets and property. Ocean-front cabins within Stockton Holiday Park have been relocated after the council deemed them at risk of collapsing into the ocean. An unstable sand cliff, north of the Stockton Surf Life Saving Club, was fenced off for public safety, while Lexie’s café was closed and a number of areas were reinforced with sandbags. The City added these actions
were necessary to protect public assets. In the interest of public safety, all accessways along Stockton Beach have been closed until further notice and the community is advised to keep away from the top and bottom of sand cliffs as they may be unstable and collapse without warning. City of Newcastle has also requested that all residents avoid the beach because the erosion has exposed significant amounts of historic material and debris which pose a public safety risk. It added that all residents and visitors needed to be aware of changed conditions and follow directional signage, warning notices and instructions from City staff and other authorities. news Coveted car show returns after lengthy hiatus

One of the most coveted car shows on the yearly calendar will roar back into action next month after a lengthy hiatus. The Morpeth Motorama, which has not taken place since 2016 due to land use restrictions, is set to return on Sunday 1 March.
Hosted by the Rotary Club of East Maitland, it is expected to attract a crowd of more than 1,000 people to the grounds of the historic Closebourne House. Rotary Club President Brian Coffey said the event provided a financial boost for local businesses,
while it was open to all collectable and classic vehicles. This includes vintage and modern cars, motorbikes, and commercial and lightweight trucks. “What makes this attractive to car enthusiasts is the fact that you can have a car show and then there’s Morpeth [nearby],” he said. “Partners can get away from the cars, do some shopping, have meals down there, or we also have onsite catering and coffee for those who want to stay near their cars. “It’s open to all brands of vehicles – as long as they are of interest to people. “We hope to top 300 cars and have had interest from as far as Trangie, which is out near Dubbo, and Mudgee.” Mr Coffey added proceeds from the day would go towards Rotary District 9670’s Drought Appeal.
A real alternative to aged care
The district spans from Newcastle in the east to Bourke and Cobar in the west. “Even though it has been raining, this drought may still impact communities for another five or six years,” Mr Coffey said. “And, on top of it, you’ve got the bushfires, which haven’t really affected us too much, but the drought’s impact is still there.” Vehicles will start to roll in around 7.30am on the day, with the event to go from 10am to 2pm. Entry fee is $10. Unregistered vehicles must be kept on trailers. The event’s major sponsors are the Morpeth Business Association and Lend Lease. Email brian@coffey.net.au for enquiries or find Morpeth Motorama on Facebook. - Ben Murphy

New recruit focused on changes to healthcare system Personal injury solicitor joins growing team People have become more aware of the law and their rights when it comes to the issue of medical negligence. That’s according to personal injury solicitor Hayley O’Brien, who is one of the newest recruits at The Law Office of Conrad Curry in Hamilton. Ms O’Brien has been working in the field of medical negligence since 2015 and joined principal Conrad Curry’s growing team last month. She strives to appreciate the unique ways in which each of her clients have been impacted by their injuries. This could be through ongoing physical or emotional pain, inability to work, difficulty performing household tasks or raising children, or the inability to pursue personal interests. Ms O’Brien aims to guide clients through the complexities of the legal process to get the rehabilitation, compensation and medical help they need to enable them to move forward in their lives.
Principal Conrad Curry and personal injury solicitor Hayley O’Brien outside The Law Office of Conrad Curry in Hamilton.
“We deal with medical negligence in many different settings – including the growing area of psychiatric injury to people who have lost a loved one through medical negligence,” she says. “Surgical error is another growing area, including cosmetic and plastic surgery; gynaecological injuries, as well as birth trauma resulting in life changing injury to mother or baby. “So, there is a broad range.” Ms O’Brien says she wants to deliver positive financial outcomes for clients, but also provide them with answers about what went wrong and bring about change in the healthcare system to protect their families, friends and community from similar wrongdoings. She adds that the amount of medical negligence cases is growing in the Hunter Region. “As time goes on, people are becoming more aware of that area of the law and their potential right to sue, whereas previously it’s not been as well known,” she says. Mr Curry says the law firm has developed a strong reputation with professionals and the community since its establishment more than three years ago. He believes adding talented and hard-working employees like Ms O’Brien will move the firm
closer to its goal of evoking change and ensuring better health care outcomes. “Our biggest referral base is other lawyers, as well as former clients, which is testament to what we’re doing,” he says. “I had come across Hayley at another firm and was impressed with her passion for medical negligence. “We are working really hard to spread the word about change and responsibility in medical and allied health care.”

Talking about death and dying is not everyone’s cup of tea, but organisers of a free public event are hoping it soon will be. Still dying to talk - Continuing the conversation is aimed at encouraging people to talk more about end of life matters. The event, to be held at Sandgate Cemetery, will discuss what co-host Newcastle Compassionate Community Chair Jeanette Lacey describes as a topic “too significant to be ignored”. “People continue to struggle socially, culturally and personally with the concept of starting healthy dialogue around the many and often complex concerns associated with dying and death,” she said. “These issues are too significant to be ignored and
it is really important for us to engage and encourage these types of conversations. “Across the five planned seminars, we’ll be providing some insight around how to best approach such sensitive issues with family, friends and other important people in our lives.” Still dying to talk - Continuing the conversation will include presentations around grief and loss, advance care planning, music and art therapy, memoir writing, tips on providing care at home, doula work and services, and general end of life matters. The event is a part of the Rest Assured initiative. It will take place at the Sandgate Cemetery (116 Maitland Road, Sandgate) on Wednesday 26 February from 5pm to 7pm. - Rebecca Riddle

cover story Grand plan to revolutionise show The revolution is well and truly underway. Ever since its debut in 1902, the Newcastle Show has historically featured attractions such as livestock parades, exhibitions and carnival rides. Despite its rich history, changes are afoot to bring the event “up to the 2020 era” ahead of the latest edition, which will take place from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 March at the showground in Broadmeadow. “I think our show had, for a long time, been repeating the processes of the last 100 years and the world had changed around it,” Newcastle Show General Manager, Gabe Robinson, says. “I interpret the show as to showcase the innovations of the region at that time. “So, 120 years ago, it was showcasing the biggest pumpkin – those type of agricultural elements. “Stereotypically, we were pitching tractors and large-scale farming but the local person who attends our show lives on a 600 [square metre] block or less, so let’s cater towards that. “What should I do with my yard? best turf to lay down? How do I create water-saving irrigation works? “That’s the stuff that is relevant.” While there will still be the usual crowd favourites such as the demolition derby, monster trucks, rodeo, woodchopping and animal nursery, the show is also ready to unveil several new additions. Some of these include a robotics section, competitive eating, and the Harlem Highlanders
competition, where strongmen and women test their mental and physical strength through challenging scenarios like pulling the monster trucks and flipping cars. Mr Robinson, who stepped into his role just six weeks out from last year’s show, says the 2020 edition is part one in his grand plan to “revolutionise” the event. Continued on page 14

cover story From page 13 “In 2019, we had one of the most successful shows in over a decade,” he says. “We had committee members who had been there for 40 years saying they hadn’t seen crowds like that since the 1980s. “This show is part of a four-year plan to overhaul or update what the show is, or shows are, and deliver that to the region.” Mr Robinson adds there will be a strong focus on value, with close to 50 free activities set to engage and interact with attendees amid a familyfriendly atmosphere.
Donations support charity “It’s about having enough value so you don’t have to get your wallet out every two metres, and that’s what creates a great family event,” he says. “Kids can build a bag in upcycle and then fill it around the grounds and walk out with it. “To me, that can offer an alternative to a showbag that costs someone $35 and is just full of plastic. “Everything that went into the upcycled showbag, a kid spent half an hour creating, making or learning how to do it, so they walked away smarter.” Visit newcastleshow.com.au for more information. - Ben Murphy

THE BIBLE’S ARMAGEDDON IS COMING THE word Armageddon is almost a common household description of catastrophic events, ranging from bushfires to floods to cyclones. Sometimes it is used to describe an end time conflict ,even nuclear war threatening the existence of mankind. It no doubt ,its a very graphic word conjuring up visions of some great unexplainable event beyond human comprehension. But what does it really mean and what are the origins of this descriptor? Its usage has dramatically increased in modern times. Why is this so and what does the future have in store for us? The BIBLE reveals the answers to these questions and more .It reveals the amazing changes to the entire World that will be implemented by Jesus Christ when He returns to set up the Kingdom of God on Earth. Bible Armageddon is a prelude to the physical, literal return of the true Messiah. Please read Revelation 16v16; Isaiah 2; Ezekiel 38; Zechariah 14v9; Luke 21.These Bible passages will

Jets defender Matt Millar’s tidy finish in the second half handed Newcastle a crucial away point against Western Sydney on Saturday. The Wanderers hit the lead in just the fifth minute when Jets fullback Bobby Burns brought down Bruce Kamau inside the box, leaving captain Mitchell Duke to slot home the resulting penalty. Western Sydney peppered Newcastle’s goal for the next 10 minutes, with striker Simon Cox twice denied by goalkeeper Lewis Italiano, while Duke also hit the post. However, the Jets fought back in the second half and found an equaliser in the 75th minute through Millar. The 23-year-old was involved in some neat build-up play and managed to squeeze a shot past in-form Wanderers’ stopper Daniel Lopar. The result leaves Newcastle in 10th position on the ladder, one point ahead of bottom-placed Central Coast. The inconsistent Wanderers sit slightly
Newcastle will play a pre-season trial in Maitland for the third straight year when the Knights tackle St George Illawarra at No.1 Sportsground this weekend. The Knights are fresh off a quarter final appearance at the NRL Nines in Perth, with the club beating New Zealand Warriors 34-0 and Penrith 16-4 in the pool stage before losing 14-7 to Parramatta. Maitland Mayor Loretta Baker said she was excited to welcome the Knights to the city for the clash on Saturday 22 February. “We’ve had a wonderful experience with the Knights over the last couple of years and the club has always been a pleasure to deal with,” she said. “I encourage everyone to get their tickets and come along for what will no doubt be another great day at the footy.” Tickets are $20 for grandstand seating, while general admission costs $10 for adults and youth (13 to 17 years old), and $5 for children aged four to 12. Surf club to launch new boat Swansea Belmont Surf Life Saving Club will launch a new boat for its under-19s crew on Friday 28 February at 5pm at the clubhouse on Blacksmiths Beach (Ungala Road, Blacksmiths). There will be drinks and nibbles provided, as well as live entertainment. The boat honours
the club’s long-time doctor, Denis Gordon, and his wife, Robin. The under-19s crew had been working to raise funds and, after a fundraising day late last year, their progress caught the ear of the doctor. The Gordon’s then committed to see the funds to completion.

The program aims to increase muscular fitness in adults aged 18-80 who do not meet the current aerobic and/or muscle strengthening physical activity guidelines, with the use of parks throughout the two council areas. The findings from this study will help with future outdoor gym installations throughout Australia. You can sign up by yourself or with your friends or family. It’s not every day we’re encouraged to eat pancakes, which is why it is important to celebrate Pancake Day, which falls on 25 February this year. Also known as Shrove Tuesday, the celebration marks the final day before Lent and originated as a way to use up leftover ingredients before the fasting period. It’s also a fantastic excuse to celebrate and enjoy one of our favourite foods.
Chocolate Pancakes with Caramel and Peanut Butter Sauce This recipe is courtesy of @young_ rebecca (Instagram handle). 1 cup wholemeal spelt flour 1 cup unsweetened almond milk 3 medjool dates, pitted 3 Tbsp raw cacao powder 1 very ripe banana Sauce 1/3 cup coconut milk 2 Tbsp Mayver’s Peanut Butter 3 medjool dates
Blend the dates and the almond milk until they are well combined and there are no chunks. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour with the cacao powder, date/almond milk from the blender and the banana. Mash the banana through the mixture with a fork. In a non-stick frypan over medium heat, cook the pancakes for approx. 2 minutes either side. Blend the sauce ingredients until smooth and creamy. Pour over pancakes when they’re ready.
Peanut Butter Banana Pancakes Recipe via Instagram handle @planted_jo. 1 cup flour 1 tsp salt 1½ tsp baking powder 1½ tsp baking soda 2 tbsp chia seeds (optional) 2 ripe bananas, mashed 1 cup raspberries, mashed 1 cup soy milk 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 tbsp Mayvers Smooth Peanut Butter 22
Combine soy milk, apple cider vinegar and vanilla essence and set aside for 5-10 minutes to curdle. In a mixing bowl, mix all dry ingredients together. Add all wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and fold to create a thick batter. Use a non-stick pan to fry each pancake, approximately 1/10 of the batter for each pancake. Gently flip each pancake when bubbles arise on the surface. Serve your pancake stack with Mayvers Smooth Peanut Butter, coconut yoghurt and fruit of choice.

Podcast for busy women Laura Jackel and Alana Dagwell are taking the podcast world by storm. In 2018, the pair created Oversubscribed and, following the release of season three this week, their fans continue to grow. “At the end of season one we had 1,000 listeners and, at the end of season two, we had over 3,500 listeners,” Jackel said. “It’s more than tripled and, while most are here in the Hunter, we have listeners all over the world.” For those who aren’t aware, a podcast is an episodic series of digital audio files that a user can download in order to listen. Jackel and Dagwell’s decision to create Oversubscribed stemmed from their love of chatting and careers in the media. “We were fans of a variety of podcasts and as friends we love to talk, so we decided over breakfast back in December 2018 to start one up,” Jackel said. “Our target audience is women like us – around 40 years old. “We talk about kids, work, popular culture and topics related to women in this stage of life. “We are the podcast for women who are hell-
bent on squeezing the most out of life.” Jackal said season three would be “more of the same”, with the pair to bring in an expert every episode to discuss different topics. She added that the expert’s professional input strengthened their chat-based content. “This season we’re talking about the school system and how hard it is to juggle the schedule as a working mum, the next decade or ‘the roaring 20s’, the Royal Family, and whether or not we can laugh about ageing,” Jackal said. They aim to keep each episode to about 30 minutes long so listeners can tune in while they travel to work. The pair are very grateful to their sponsors, who allow them to continue to share the podcast with the community. While season one was self-funded, season two had eight different sponsors – one for each episode. Season three has been supported by Event Cinemas Kotara and Glendale. The Oversubscribed podcast is available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify or you can access it through their website. Go to getoversubscribed. com for more information. - Elizabeth Symington

A taste of France An inaugural twilight market will bring a little bit of France to Newcastle. The Alliance Française de Newcastle’s French Twilight Market will include activities for the whole family. “We’re going to have stalls all with a French flavour, selling French cheeses, wine, pastries, clothing, travel, and more,” Alliance Française de Newcastle’s John Beach said. “We’re also going to have some live French music and a display of classic French cars.” The day will also include French workshops for children and adults. Beach added that the markets would act as a way to promote the relationship between the Hunter Region and France. According to Beach, there are incredibly strong ties linking
Newcastle and France that date all the way back to World War I. “More than 3,000 Newcastle men died in France during the war,” he said. He added that these ties made France a popular travel spot for Novocastrians. “The Northern part of France is one of the most popular travel spots for Newcastle people because they visit their fallen ancestors,” he said. Beach said that a travel expo, hosted at the markets, would consist of companies offering deals on trips to France and New Caledonia. Apart from the close ties, Alliance Française de Newcastle wants to showcase its work in French language and culture. The not-for-profit organisation has classes suited for all ages and skill levels and has been the official French language and cultural centre

in Newcastle since 1985. Beach said the group’s work “enriches cultural understandings, strengthens ties between countries, and is lots of fun in the classes”. In addition to classes, it also offers social activities, including French Fridays movie nights and a monthly Club Blabla, where members catch up and chat in
French. The French Twilight Market will go from 4pm to 9pm this Saturday 22 February at The Station, Newcastle (corner Watt and Scott streets, Newcastle). Everyone is invited to attend. Go to afnewcastle.com.au or email frenchmarket@afnewcastle. com.au for more information. - Elizabeth Symington

Dance show set to catapult audiences
Photo: Ashley De Prazer
Dance enthusiasts will witness a unique view of world issues next month when Newcastle’s Civic Theatre hosts Mixed Bill. The contemporary dance creation is the brainchild of artistic director Cadi McCarthy and will include home-grown performances by some of the city’s most talented dance and sound artists. McCarthy said the 80-minute
performance was set to enthral audiences over its two-night schedule. “It is both powerful and evocative,” she said. “It is a look at how we as humans are responding, as a whole, to the world around us at the moment and the impacts it has on us as humans.” The performance is the work of Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub. “We have two Hunter composers as well as nine dancers who either originate in Newcastle or now call Newcastle home,” McCarthy said. “And they are all professionals in their field.” Mixed Bill consists of four choreographed pieces set to original scores composed by Newcastle’s James Hazel and Zackari Watt. “All of the works are different approaches to choreography,” McCarthy said.
“It is interesting to see what dance is and how it can be used to discuss issues we are facing in the world. “It is a very strong show that demonstrates how movement can be utilised in a way to discuss current issues.” Mixed Bill is set to appear at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 March. The show starts at 7:30pm. - Rebecca Riddle

Young creatives on show The artistic talent of Lake Macquarie millennials has gone on show at the Museum of Art and Culture (MAC). The First Class 19 exhibition showcases some of the best works from last year’s HSC visual arts students from Lake Macquarie and surrounding areas. Now in its 12th year, First Class showcases an array of art works from photos and paintings to sculptures and printmaking. MAC Director Debbie Abraham said the display was one of the venue’s most anticipated exhibitions. “The diversity and creativity on display in First Class 19 belies the young age of these amazing artists, Abraham said. “It also demonstrates the multitude of skills Visual Arts students must call upon when taking on the HSC. Former Heritage College Lake Macquarie student Natasha Wilson’s
work will be displayed. It represents the microorganisms found in a single drop of sea water, with each creature sculpted from recycled plastic. “I wanted my work to bring to light pollution and the effects it can have on ocean creatures, Wilson said. “Most people focus on the macro and the bigger creatures, but no one actually realises the micro it also affects, and when they die in the food chain, it all sort of crumbles from there. She said it was a thrill to have her work exhibited in a major show. “Knowing that people can come in and they can judge the artwork for themselves and decide what they want from it – it’s pretty exciting, she said. First Class 19 is on until Sunday 5 April. - Elizabeth Symington

Colour blocking This trend keeps on giving and it’s a really easy way to achieve a striking and unique interior. Incorporating homewares and furniture that contrast with each other in colour creates a statement, however, if you don’t want to be as bold, using different shades of the same colour can achieve a more subtle colour
blocking look. Go big and contrast your furniture against the paint colour or wallpaper you have on your walls or test if you like the style by contrasting smaller items together, like crockery or cushions, in different shades of colour. - Elizabeth Symington

in the garden
Embrace your individuality There have been comments over the last few years that I probably have a great garden. Not really, although I believe gardens should reflect individuality – our taste in colour and needs, not just created from glossy mags. We often have a love of a particular plant, but I’m not suggesting that it is wise to plant one of every plant that takes your fancy, as this will certainly result in an overgrown mess. For example: my own garden is maturing and, although I'm happy with the result, there are times that gardens need changes and adjustments. When my home was under construction, my grandchildren, then all under four, influenced my garden needs. My first choice was a cubby house and it was prominent on the front lawn, as was Clare, Tom and Luisa’s vegetable garden, which now has given me space to plant standard ‘Ellena’ roses. In the cubby house’s
Now in le t Newcas
place, I have a row of ‘Catalpa’ standards planted along the lawn, which is bordered by hedges of Golden Durantas. The Magnolia Little Gem I planted along the driveway are now fully grown, although this summer has been harsh to them. Although my front garden isn’t large, bordering each bed with Japanese Box hedges had united all the different beds and softened the concrete driveways. Bringing the garden up to date, I have planted in a small front bed a Magnolia ‘Teddy Bear’ and two ‘Iceberg’ standard roses. When creating a new garden or even zapping up the old, remember the birds and well-loved cats and dogs who like soil to dig in and grass for morning ablutions. Hence, I keep planting new grevilleas along my back fence which relies on rain for water, as the honeyeaters and rosellas are regular visitors. The moral of this column is to seek advice about what to plant where, but remember it is your home and garden to enjoy.
• Well now is certainly time to take advantage of the recent rain. If you have already fertilised the lawn, throw light handfuls of lime over the lawn to sweeten the soil after the rain. • I am surprised that the lawn grub is invading now but do remember to reapply grub killer in 10 days’ time. • Roses will love a handful of Dolomite to replace elements lost after recent rain. • Certainly, prepare garden beds with poultry manure ready for planting pansies, but please wait until March when the humidity has eased.

Based on the true story of Lili Elbe, one of the first-known recipients of sex reassignment surgery, director Tom Hooper’s feature is a polished affair. Essentially a love story set in the 1920s, Eddie Redmayne (pictured) and Alicia Vikander are Danish artists who find their marriage and work life challenged when Einar realises he identifies as a woman. Hooper embraces an arty approach, with a muted palette and many close-up shots of faces contrasted with grand landscapes.
Li Cunxin’s incredible rags-to-riches tale is pure Hollywood – except it’s actually true. In 1979, during a cultural exchange to Texas, Cunxin (Chi Cao, pictured) fell in love with an American woman, Elizabeth Mackey (Amanda Schull), and decided to defect from his homeland. The emotionally stirring drama also stars Bruce Greenwood, Joan Chen and Kyle MacLachlan.
Hip, cool and positively bursting at the seams with invention and energy few filmmakers could muster, Martin Scorsese’s tour de force gangster epic chronicles the fast times of gangster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta). Hill’s rocky romance with New York’s criminal underworld is shared by the firebrand Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) and the shadowy Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro, pictured).

celebrity birthday RIHANNA (Robyn Rihanna Fenty) 20 February 1988 Rihanna’s imagination will be running riot and her artistic flair will certainly be strong. This is the ideal time to get her head and heart together and throw her commitment behind a new venture. in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
Mercury started its retrograde motion on 17 February, so this period can bring a lot of inspiration, imagination and artistic vision, increased creativity and the ability to implement the things you feel. You might receive unexpected news concerning a friend you haven’t heard from in a long time.
When it comes to outside sources of income or any joint resources, surprises are in store. In this regard, quick action could prove quite favourable on the home front. If your partner does not see things the way you do, a clear explanation could improve their understanding.
Entertainment and social activities could be on the agenda for the rest of this month and pleasurable times could be coming to you in a surprising way. But be sure to take monetary expenses into consideration so that the cost is not more than you can handle.
The spotlight is on your areas of personal income and values. Changes in those areas continue to surface but things seem to work out well for you. Your intuition is in fine form, so be sure to follow your instincts. Your career appears to be heading in the right direction.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
For the rest of the month, your highest ideals and hopes continue to be in the spotlight. You might also experience restlessness to change direction in your life. On the home front, it could feel as though your desire for change is being curtailed by your domestic responsibilities.
The spotlight is on your area of relationships. Despite some disagreement concerning your home surroundings, you and your partner should be able to experience friendly harmony. With clear and loving communication, any issues or frustrations can be resolved easily.
There could be significant changes on the home front in coming weeks, though loving times with your nearest and dearest will help to provide a sense of balance. On the work front, there could be lots of back and forth communication and differences of opinion could result in frustration.
You might find your way of thinking is erratic as lots of ideas will be coming to your mind and many of them seem to be changing and going in different directions. On the work front, you could be required to resolve responsibilities that don’t belong to you.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
On the work front, you could question your way of thinking as some changes have been happening that might not be to your liking. A mature friend could be reminding you about your personal values before you look into speculation or rumours. It’s likely something is being hidden from you.
On the work front, you might receive surprising news but this is connected to something that has been in the works for quite some time now. When it comes to financial negotiations, be sure to ask the right questions so you can negotiate the best deal for you.
Contact with siblings or close relatives could be on the agenda as unexpected news could be coming your way that could prove increasingly beneficial to you over time. When it comes to shared resources, be sure to assert yourself as someone could be playing with your feelings.
A spark of creativity on the work front could help to provide a source of extra income. Behind the scenes, activities will be surrounding you that might cause confusion when it comes to your inner feelings. You’ll value private time to help you sort out your thoughts.

Beloved comedy to drop anchor in Cessnock Set sail with Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved comedy of star-crossed lovers, mismatched marriages and mistaken identities when H.M.S. Pinafore drops anchor in Cessnock on Saturday 7 March at 8pm. Aboard the ship H.M.S. Pinafore, the captain’s daughter, Josephine, has fallen in love with a lowly sailor, Ralph Rackstraw, despite her father’s plan to marry her to the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter. As the lovers lament their predicament and plan their escape, a surprise disclosure from an unlikely quarter shows that not all is at it seems.

Novocastrians have known about the show for many years and, as a result, have made assumptions as to what the show is. So, to break the mould, I had to get creative. My focus was on guerrilla marketing.
Gabe Robinson
GENERAL MANAGER – THE NEWCASTLE SHOW
With a background in television and live entertainment productions that spans 15 years, the country-born Gabe Robinson first migrated to Newcastle for university. He developed irreplaceable ties and links to the Hunter before moving to Sydney to work amongst some of the largest productions in the world, such as The Voice, The X Factor, Eurovision and The Nickelodeon Slime Fest. Gabe has used his global experience to help modernise and revitalise the Newcastle Show, building a three-day showcase of agriculture, horticulture and industry. Through a focus on increasing the amount of free activations, as well as reaching Novocastrians via modern marketing techniques and applying new innovations, Gabe has successfully reclaimed relevance for a 118-year strong Newcastle Show. - Gemma Greenland 54
ROBOTICS Robotics is one of the fastest growing industries within the Hunter. Tafe NSW, the University of Newcastle, Elite Robotics and Robotic Systems lead the way with robotics competitions, and STEM Education gets people keen early with free workshops on drones, Marty Bots, Sphero Balls, Sphero rings, Tetrix, and more.
SUSTAINABILITY Reduce, re-use, upcycle. It’s important that we reduce our carbon footprint whilst educating others to reduce theirs. At the show, we have got upcycling workshops and biodegradable showbags, or plant a seedling in your empty water bottle or deposit it in our return and earn stations.
FOCUS ON VALUE We all have mouths to feed and bills to pay, we all work hard and deserve quality family time that doesn’t empty your wallet. The show’s focus is on what patrons get for their ticket, which is why there are over 50 free things to do this year.
