This week... From the editor It might have been a wet and wild weekend for many, but it was uplifting to see so much widespread rain across the region. Driving home past green pastures, puddles and flowing rivers was a welcome sight, even though we still obviously need a lot more. The backyard now needs a mow for just the third time in the past 12 months (I pretty much just ran over two or three patches of grass sprinkled amongst all the dirt on the last attempt) and I’ll have to get some advice from our expert gardening columnist Judy Sharpe on pesky weeds that have made an unwelcome return. Apart from the natural environment, a local art project is also blossoming due to the hard work of volunteers. Fearless Flowers has taken place every Wednesday at Timeless Textiles’ gallery in Hunter Street, Newcastle. The project sees a large group of women create flowers through fibre or textiles in a bid to build a welcoming community and raise funds for worthy causes. This year’s fundraising efforts will be donated to the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) for vital research into ovarian cancer. Our cover stars, Wilma Simmons and Anne Kempton, have been heavily involved in the project, which also works towards – and celebrates – International Women’s Day next month. - Ben Murphy

For Irini Kassas, every place called Newcastle is unique. According to the Deputy Chair of International Newcastle Inc (IN), there are more than a hundred locations that share the name across the globe. “It’s quite wonderful to call 110 Newcastle’s your home,” she says. In April, Ms Kassas will represent the Australian version in Neuchatel, Switzerland, during a biennial conference hosted by a Newcastle’s of the World group. The group is an alliance between any city, town, village or area bearing the Newcastle title, whether it’s in English or the native language. A representative from each country attends the conference to discuss their connections and any potential new projects. Ms Kassas says she wants to

strengthen ties that exist around the globe by helping to develop, review and maintain business relations between the Australian city and other overseas groups. “International Newcastle is a not-for-profit organisation and we are an introductory agency for any overseas interested parties who would like to commence some projects or relations with Newcastle,” Ms Kassas says. “It’s a safe space and we do tend to be able to kickstart a few new projects. “We maintain relationships through business, education, tourism and culture, which is fantastic.” Ms Kassas says each Newcastle is “unique in their own way”. “It’s quite hard to choose a favourite because the beauty about Newcastle’s of the World is that

wherever you go in the world you always call a Newcastle home,” she says. The next Newcastle’s of the World conference will be hosted in 2022 and Ms Kassas says there is a bid underway to host it in the Australian city. “The beauty of our Newcastle is that we are very multicultural so, if we do get to host the conference in 2022, it would be wonderful to have all these different nationalities, whether they are from Newcastle, Malaysia, Switzerland, Denmark, America, Italy or Japan, to come here and find a little bit of their homes right here in our own Newcastle,” she says. news City to fund ocean baths restoration A “national icon” will be transformed after City of Newcastle pledged to fund its restoration. In late 2019, the council sought Expressions of Interest (EOI) from private developers in a bid to redevelop both the Newcastle and Merewether ocean baths. However, a lack of successful submissions means the City has committed to take on the project. A recently incorporated group, Friends of Newcastle Ocean Baths, viewed the decision as a big win. “We have been on tenterhooks for the last few months just crossing fingers because we asked council to cancel the EOI process and they refused to do that,” founding member, Jessica Miller, said. “So, we’ve just been nervously waiting and hoping that they don’t get any suitable EOI’s – that is what’s happened and we are really happy

about that.” Another founding member, Penny Maxwell, said she hoped the City would remain committed to what the community wanted. “We would like them to keep meaningful consultation with the community because the Newcastle Ocean Baths is a Newcastle icon, but it’s also a national icon and it’s very beloved to the people of Newcastle,” she said. Both Ms Miller and Ms Maxwell said the baths needed some work regarding parking, disability access, shade and updating the changing facilities. Ms Maxwell added that free public access to all areas at the baths was also important. “It’s not just the baths that are important to keep freely accessible, it is the spaces around them that allow friends and family to enjoy a very

low-cost day out,” she said. “The great thing about Newcastle is having spaces that friends, families and individuals can have lifestyle on a budget, and this is one of the best places in Newcastle to come and have that.” City of Newcastle will form a community reference group by the end of the month to guide the restoration of the Newcastle Ocean Baths and will continue engagement on the Merewether pavilion later this year. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said she was determined to see the Newcastle Ocean Baths become an asset all Novocastrians could be proud of. “This means converting feedback from the current community engagement process into the preliminary design that, once costed, can be further tested with the

community to ensure the Newcastle Ocean Baths receives an appropriate restoration 98 years after it was first built,” she said. The City is committed to retaining the iconic art-deco façade and bleacher seating, while improving the public change rooms, shading, car parking, access and seating. - Elizabeth Symington

Lake Macquarie City Council will build a 3.5-kilometre shared pathway, linking the iconic Fernleigh Track with Blacksmiths Beach. It comes after the council was awarded with a state government grant. Design for the landmark project will begin immediately, with construction expected to start in the 2020-2021 financial year. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the track would fill in a missing link between existing popular pathways in Lake Macquarie and Newcastle. “The Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track will create a 27km continuous walking and cycling route stretching from Murrays Beach to Adamstown,” she said. “It will showcase our city, generate active leisure tourism,

and help promote healthy lifestyles in the local community.” The state government will contribute $7.4 million to the project through round two of its Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund. The council will contribute the remaining funds to ensure the track’s completion. The total project cost is estimated to be $12 million. When completed, the track will create the longest continuous footpath and cycleway in the Hunter Region. Construction will include multiple entry points, an amenities block and a series of public art installations featuring stories depicting the local Awabakal people and their relationship with the environment. - Elizabeth Symington

news Population growth prompts area’s post office proposal A new post office proposal has been inundated with support. Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon, is pushing for the western suburbs of Newcastle, including Maryland, Minmi and Fletcher to become home to a new post office. It comes as the area is projected to experience a large growth in population. Ms Claydon hosted a meeting earlier this month to receive feedback on the adequacy of local postal services and community offices in Maryland and Minmi. She was amazed by the response. “Dozens of people turned out to tell me they loved living in Maryland, Minmi and Fletcher but the lack of a post office is a real drawback,” Ms Claydon said.

“The closest post office is at Wallsend, which is a long way to go if you rely on public transport or you’ve got mobility issues. “Meanwhile, Wallsend residents are seeing waiting times and queues at their local post office grow and grow.” June Hill, an 81-year-old Maryland resident, is among the group of locals to back Ms Claydon’s proposal. She believes constructing a post office in the area is a fantastic idea. “It’d be so much easier and so much closer,” she said. “If we had a post office out here, it would be so handy.” Ms Hill visits the post office around once a week. She said she was forced to travel to the crowded Wallsend Post Office

whenever she needed to pay a bill or send a letter. “I’m one of the old school – I like to pay my bills at the post office,” Ms Hill said. “I also send letters to my granddaughter in Queensland, so I go there fairly often. “It’s always packed, and the queues often go right up to the door.” Ms Claydon said the problem was only going to get worse as the

population continues to rise. She added that, because of the strong community support, she was committed to fighting for this issue. “Given the clear demonstration of local support, I will be proceeding with a community campaign to convince the Federal Government and Australia Post of the need to deliver the post office that western suburbs residents deserve,” she said. - Elizabeth Symington

Racing towards premier event Horses will compete for automatic qualification in the richest race of its kind in Australia when the Newcastle Mile returns to the Newcastle Harness Racing Club this month. The club’s premier race night on Friday 21 February serves as a qualifier for the $1 million Miracle Mile at Sydney’s Club Menangle. The 2019 edition was swamped by a thunderstorm and torrential rain, but Yayas Hot Spot, trained by Shane Tritton and driven by Lauren Tritton, handled the difficult conditions to come out on top. Newcastle Harness Racing Club Chairman, Daryl Rodgers, said organisers were hoping for a clear night this time around. “For participants, the [Newcastle] Mile is significant because we’re being recognised by the controlling bodies that it’s up there with the top tracks,” he said. “We’ve got interest from top interstate horses and even some from New Zealand – they know that, if you’re lucky enough to win the Newcastle Mile, then it puts you in

with a shot at the $1 million race. “Newcastle is a great area and people will come to events where there is top class racing and sport on offer. “We had a great crowd last year despite the massive storm that pushed the race back about an hour and 20 minutes.” Rodgers added there would be plenty of family-friendly entertainment on the night. This includes a kid’s zone, which will provide face painting, a balloon artist, jumping castle, roving characters, and the Mini Trots. Former Miss Universe Australia and reality television star, Tegan Martin, is set to return as the event’s ambassador. She will be available at a photo wall on arrival, where volunteers from the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Kids Club are planning to

sell ‘smiles’ and raffle tickets to raise money for much-needed equipment and resources at the children’s hospital. The prize in the major raffle is a $2,000 travel voucher from italktravel Warners Bay. cover story Women join forces to raise funds for worthy cause was launched last year as part of a rally organised by Newcastle’s 2019 Citizen of the Year and former ABC Newcastle journalist Jill Emberson. Ms Emberson, who passed away from ovarian cancer in December, campaigned for fairer funding to enable research on the disease and founded Pink Meets Teal – a Hunterbased community of women who want to see an increase to the fiveyear survival rate of just 46%. More than 1,600 Australian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and about 1,000 die every year. Fearless Flowers Coordinator Wilma Simmons said the project, which aimed to raise funds for ovarian cancer, was one in a long line of International Women’s Day initiatives. “In the past, we have had a few different causes like supporting local

From page 14 “I think the momentum has come because people have heard Jill’s story,” she said. “It certainly has helped maintain motivation – if that’s the word – to keep working on this project.” As International Women’s Day approaches, Fearless Flowers has teamed up with City of Newcastle and a group called Makers and Traders to showcase displays in the shopfronts of 30 different businesses from Thursday 27 February. The community is invited to come along and judge the bestdressed window up until Saturday 7 March as part of the competition. Hunter Water has located several potential sites for supply and demand options as part of a comprehensive review of the region’s long-term water plan. Working with the community and state government, the review will ensure the region has a sustainable supply of water in the decades to come and during times of drought. Hunter Water’s Chief Investment Officer, Darren Cleary, said all options were actively being investigated, with the review now at the stage where potential sites would be explored in more detail. “We’ve been through a rigorous process to look at all of the options available to us that could help reduce the amount of water we use and to supplement our existing drinking

A Dimi Petratos double helped the Newcastle Jets to a thrilling 4-3 derby win over Central Coast at a rain-soaked McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Jets started on the front foot when Steven Ugarkovic’s

powerful drive from long-range rebounded off the post. After a bright opening, the home side deservedly took the lead in the 15th minute when Matt Millar floated a cross to the back post. Striker Abdiel Arroyo headed the ball into the path of Petratos, who lashed a left-footed effort into the roof of the net. Newcastle then doubled its advantage just 10 minutes later as veteran defender Nikolai ToporStanley swept home a Petratos corner. However, Central Coast received a boost on the stroke of half-time, with Ruon Tongyik turning home a Jack Clisby corner to halve the deficit. The scores were then level in the 49th minute as an unmarked Clisby nodded home a free kick.

Despite the setback, Newcastle responded immediately when Millar won the ball back and Roy O’Donovan – in his second debut for the Jets – found Petratos in space. Musical classic kicks off a new season The plot may sound familiar. Amalia and Georg are two perfumery employees who have shared a strong dislike for each other from the very beginning. He thinks she is stuck up; she views him as arrogant and mean. However, when the working day is done, they both write to a lonely hearts’ pen pal, and it turns out they

are in love without realising it. When Amalia and Georg discover the truth, they rejoice in their love for each other at the story’s sweet and musically delightful conclusion. She Loves Me is based on a 1937 play by Miklos Laszlo called Parfumerie, which also inspired the 1998 Hollywood romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail, starring Meg Ryan

and Tom Hanks. Set in Budapest in the 1930s, She Loves Me was first performed on Broadway in 1963, with several successful Broadway and West End revivals. Directed by Zac Smith, it will kick off Opera Hunter’s 2020 season this month with six productions at the Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre. Harold Phipps, who plays the character of Georg, says the show has involved months of rehearsals. “She Loves Me is more in line with what the play is based on, being set in Budapest in the ‘30s, but it’s still the same story [as You’ve Got Mail],

which is really cool,” he says. “It’s like old Broadway mixed with some contemporary stuff, so it’s a lot of fun.” The musical’s opening night will be on Friday 28 February from 7.30pm. Other performances take place on Saturday 29 February (1.30pm and 7.30pm); Sunday 1 March (1.30pm); Friday 6 March (7.30pm); Saturday 7 March (1.30pm and 7.30pm); and Sunday 8 March (1.30pm). Plan for tropical gardens Rain, rain, and aren’t we happy – the present weather is tending toward tropical rain, heat and humidity, turning my thought to plants which are suitable to create a tropical garden. My next door neighbour has a beautiful native frangipani, Hymenosporum flavum, not to be confused with Plumeria acutifolia (frangipani), which I must say have survived the summer weather, whereas our native frangipani has burnt badly, along with many other species. The common name frangipani (Plumeria), still flowering in some gardens, originated from the West Indies and Central America and in India is known as The Temple Tree. The common name of frangipani refers to the heavy perfume of the flowers – Plumeria, the botanical reference commemorates Charles Plumier, a 7th Century botanist

who described several of the tropical species. I think it helps to know a plant’s origins – it is important for gardeners to be able to cultivate plants in conditions similar to their originality. In our sub-tropical area, the flowers are often borne after the new leaves – certainly an easy tree to grow but beware of old pottery pipes that can crack and be tempting for invasive roots. Let me do a quick plan for a tropical garden. Firstly, palms are ideal but can be burnt if planted in full sun; they need a canopy for protection from the heat. Use umbrella trees and Strelitzia nicolli as tall backgrounds, then a layer of medium-sized shrubs such as Ixora and Golden Durantas. Border planting can be created with colourful crotons or alternantheras, which come in different sizes but

are burgundy-coloured, adding a nice contrast to green leafy plants such as bird’s nest. Always double check a plant’s suitability for your garden planning as I recently had an enquiry: Would Madonna Lilies (Spathyfilium) grow in full sun around a swimming pool? The answer: Definitely not.

Although it is wonderful as an indoor plant, it likes total shade in the garden and will look great as underplanting in a tropical garden.

THIS WEEK • The rain is here and, yes, it is a great time to lightly top dress deadish lawns and fertilise. • Dig out spent summer annuals such as petunias. Lightly fertilise with a slow release such as Bounceback and plant marigolds, lobelia and petunias, if still available. • I confess – I had neglected a Swanes Golden Pencil Pine which had been growing in a large pot for 14 years, relying on rain. It has been dug out and replaced, but a lesson has been learnt, plants growing in pots can’t rely on rain.
