This week... From the editor Everyone is so busy these days. Eat, sleep, work and repeat – it is a vicious cycle for many. In between, there’s the daily commute to and from work, where friendly fellow drivers seemingly want to run over the top of your car to get home just a few seconds quicker. Likewise, supermarkets can be dangerous when lunatics fly around aisles at a million miles an hour, narrowly missing your foot with their trolley in the frantic quest to reach the check out. I was speaking to a local athlete for a charity-related story recently and he suggested that many people looked like zombies. He said they were alive, but not living. It certainly made me stop and think. I, like most people, can be swept up in the rush to get from point A to point B without enjoying the journey. Avid readers will probably think I’ve gone to a few too many wellness classes as this thought process follows last week’s column on living life to the fullest. Nonetheless, however bad our day seems, there is always someone who will, unfortunately, be worse off. This week’s cover stars – marriage celebrants Monty King and Monty Haron – are doing their bit to help sick children by donating funds from a live auction for an all-inclusive wedding package to the Starlight Children’s Foundation. - Ben Murphy

news Campaign searches for melanoma survivor’s hero

A trip to the bank may have saved David Wallace’s life. In late 2018, the Newcastle resident was waiting in line when a

stranger tapped him on the shoulder and told him that a small spot on his arm didn’t look right. Mr Wallace had a history of melanoma. Just 12 months earlier, he underwent testing and had a melanoma successfully removed, but then needed to be monitored every three months, alternating between the Newcastle Melanoma Unit (NMU) and the Newcastle Skin Clinic. His last check-up had taken place only five weeks prior. So, when the stranger approached him at the bank, Mr Wallace was not overly concerned. “I kind of dismissed him, thinking: ‘Who are you? I’m going to ignore you buddy – I’ve been seeing someone [for check-ups],’” Mr Wallace said. However, he decided to have the

spot investigated and contacted his doctor at the NMU, based at the Calvary Mater Newcastle. After being told his doctor was on annual leave, the NMU recommended Mr Wallace see a GP, and he landed an appointment the following day. The GP booked him in to have the spot removed, and pathology tests confirmed that it, too, was a melanoma. Mr Wallace has had two more lesions removed within the last six months and continues to get regular skin checks. Now, he wants the chance to thank the stranger who potentially saved his life by suggesting he get the dot checked. Hunter Melanoma Foundation (HMF) has started a #findmyhero social media campaign and is asking visitors to its Facebook page

to watch and share Mr Wallace’s important story. “It’s the perfect message to get across to people – if you see something on someone, don’t be afraid to ask the question,” the foundation’s chief executive, Claudia Tolhurst, said. “Not too many people would think that that is an invasion of privacy.” The HMF has also organised an activation event at the Newcastle Jets’ derby clash with the Central Coast Mariners at McDonald Jones Stadium this Sunday 9 February. There will be giveaways, a sunscreen station and games, as well as a half-time competition to reinforce the Slip, Slop, Slap, Slide and Seek messages. news Support group helps people find hope Julie Hamilton always knew she wanted to find a “different sort of happiness” after losing her husband, Patrick, to cancer. She sought counselling and support but felt like there was something missing. So, about a year after Patrick passed, she created Hope Floats – an organisation to bring widows together to help them move forward after their tragic loss. “Losing your spouse is like losing part of your soul,” Julie says. “It’s losing your best friend, it’s losing your soul mate and losing your partner in life and what your future was going to be. “I just thought there is a real need for people who have lost their partner to be able to connect in a social setting, so that’s why I decided to start up Hope Floats. “Once we sit down and talk, there’s that real common thread that we completely understand each other – we’ve gone through exactly what that other person has gone through and we understand how they are feeling.” The group meets up every month for morning

tea, lunch or dinner. It’s a safe space where individuals can socialise and connect through their common understanding of grief and loss. Julie says one of the hardest things to do after losing a spouse is to put yourself back into social settings because your partner was “usually sitting right next you”. She adds that losing your spouse has different consequences to losing another loved one. “I never thought that I would get over it, but you don’t get over it, you just have to move forward,” she says. “It’s not moving on; it’s just moving forward.” About 30 people attend each group meeting, with members ranging from their 30s all the way up to their 80s. They invite anyone to join and share their special connection. Julie asks that you get in contact before you attend an event so she can check in with you and chat about your story. She wants to make sure that everyone feels welcome and that you will be comfortable in

Rally to plant seeds of change Climate strikers are planting seeds of change in the hope of nationwide growth and action on an issue deemed one of the most defining in modern times. An inaugural Climate Crisis: National Day of Action, organised by the Climate Justice Alliance Newcastle, is set to make four demands as part of a campaign for change on Saturday 22 February. Attendees will call on the government to build a 100% publicly owned renewable energy system by 2030; avoid new fossil fuel or nuclear projects; increase funding for rural firefighters; and fund Indigenous-led land management with jobs to repair ecosystems and reduce emissions and fire risk. “It’ll be a peaceful protest and there will be a march from [Pacific] Park to Civic Park,” School Strike 4 Climate (SS4C) Organiser and Newcastle’s Young Citizen of the Year, Alexa Stuart, says. “We’ll be fighting for action on climate change, particularly after these devastating bushfires. “We want the government to take real action on climate change.”

A supporter of the event, Michael Badier, hopes people will back their cause. “I believe everyone should be involved in supporting what the climate strikers do, so we have a future for our children’s children,” he says. “I’d love to see everyone just drop their hats for the day, leave school, leave work, leave home and just come and fill [Pacific Park]. “This small seed needs to be something that grows nationwide so the federal government will take notice of the importance of this movement.” Mr Badier hopes the transition to renewables is handled in a way that benefits everyone. “All change will impact one way or another,” he says. “My hope is that it [will] impact in a way that is positive not only for the people that stand beside and behind this issue but also the people on the other side of the fence.” If you cannot attend the event, Miss Stuart and Mr Badier still encourage you to use your voice and make small changes to reduce your footprint. news Motor scooters a key to love Family, motor scooters and travel are the key to Wendy and Carlo Rossi’s loved-up marriage. The pair met at the University of Newcastle and have adored each other ever since. “We were meant to be together,” Wendy said. “It’s funny because I thought I was after a serious business man and Carlo came across a bit as a class clown but, once we really met each other, I couldn’t imagine a day without him, that’s how I knew it was a forever thing.” More than 30 years on, the pair have built a beautiful life in the Hunter. With three kids, a cat and their motor scooters, they have all they need. Their love has taken them around the world, touring Greece, Italy and other parts of Europe.

The pair share their passion for travel with those who are close to them. Choose to reuse project Lake Macquarie coffee drinkers are being encouraged to switch to reusable cups. The Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance will be collaborating with cafes and restaurants in Warners Bay and Toronto to offer affordable and good quality reusable coffee cups. In Australia, more than two and a half million single-use coffee cups are thrown out every day, which adds up to about one billion each year. “Single-use coffee cups are not recyclable, and people are confused about this,” Secretary of the Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance, Stephen Dewar, said. “They either end up in landfill or littering our streets, parks and waterways. “Our project will make it easier for people to join the thousands

of other Lake Macquarie residents who are making the switch away from single-use plastics.” The project is funded through an NSW Government Community Litter Grant, which enables the coffee cups to be offered at a significantly subsidised price. The cups will be collapsible to make it easier to carry and to encourage people to remember to wash and have then ready for their next coffee. “We are focusing on removing a significant litter item at its source,” Mr Dewar said. “Remember: Don’t be a tosser – choose reusable.” The reusable cups will be available in participating locations from Monday 10 February. cover story Couples to bid for dream wedding They are the brains and brawn behind a live auction that encourages couples to open their hearts and wallets in the name of charity. Newcastle-based marriage celebrants Monty King and Monty Haron will auction off an all-inclusive wedding package, valued at more than $50,000, this Valentine’s Day – Friday 14 February – at Stanley Park, Fullerton Cove. The couple with the highest bid will get married at the historic Port Stephens-based property, circa 1897, on 11 July. All proceeds from the auction are going to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which aims to brighten the lives of seriously ill kids by replacing pain, fear and stress with fun, joy and laughter. Following the event, a second auction will then take place on 31 May at Adams Peak Country Estate in Broke, with the wedding date set for 13 October, to raise funds for Run DIPG – an organisation dedicated to improving outcomes for children diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). It is the deadliest form of childhood cancer,

with an average survival rate of just nine months after diagnosis. Run DIPG has funded critical medical research into the illness, coordinated by Dr Matt Dun – a renowned cancer researcher at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and the University of Newcastle. Mr King said the decision to host two auctions and weddings in 2020 was born from the success of last year’s inaugural event, which raised more than $34,000 for Camp Quality. He added the two Montys opted to team up after realising the power of community over competition. “Due to last year’s success, we thought we’d bite off a bit more this year and see if we can do it twice,” he said. “The [Valentine’s Day auction] is going really well – we’ve got all of our vendors in place, so now it’s just about drumming up support and interest and getting people out to bid.” Mr Haron said the duo wanted to surpass last year’s efforts. “The wedding package is worth over $55,000

sport Parker defends paratriathlon title

Getting back into sport saved paratriathlete Lauren Parker’s life. Almost three years after a fatal accident that left her paralysed from the waist down, Parker successfully defended her title at the Paratriathlon Oceania Championships in Newcastle last month. “It was so good racing in my hometown,” she said. “Last year, I won that event and I was able to defend my title and win it again in front of my home crowd, friends and family – it was very special. “It was a perfect day; the water was glassy and flat for the swim – I couldn’t have asked for anything more.” Parker secured the win with a time of one hour, 13 minutes and 43 seconds, edging out fellow competitors Emily Tapp and Sara

Tait, who finished in second and third respectively. In 2017, Parker experienced an accident that would change her life forever. She was training for an Iron Man competition when the tires on her bike burst and she went flying into a guard rail at 45km/h. Parker broke her shoulder, ribs, pelvis and back and had a punctured lung. While these injuries could heal, one thing couldn’t – her spinal cord. She spent months in rehab preparing for life in a wheelchair and what it would be like in the real world. Parker added that one of the hardest parts of her recovery was the negativity that grew around her; she was told she’d never be an athlete again but, after strong training and determination, she

proved them all wrong. In a few weeks she will be participating in a world series event in Devonport, Tasmania. Following this, she will then race in Florida, Milan and Japan in a bid to qualify for the 2020 Paralympic Games. Parker has dreamed of winning a gold medal at the Games since she swam competitively as a child. She said it was her “ultimate goal” and what everyone dreams of. Aside from competing, Parker hopes she inspires people. “I want to inspire as many kids coming into the sport as possible that have had accidents like me,” she said. “Never give up, think that anything is possible, and always be positive.” - Elizabeth Symington

sport Waratahs star relishes home clash Former Newcastle junior Harry Johnson-Holmes will “go full circle” when the NSW Waratahs’ prop and his teammates tackle the Blues at McDonald Jones Stadium this weekend in round two of the Super Rugby competition. Johnson-Holmes played for Wanderers in the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union before moving to Sydney. Now, he is relishing the chance to claim a first win of the season in front of a home crowd. The Waratahs suffered an opening defeat, 4325, to Super Rugby juggernaut, the Crusaders, last Saturday. However, Johnson-Holmes believed NSW only needed to make minor improvements against another New Zealand-based club in the Blues. “We are disappointed in the result, but there’s not a lot we’re going to change tactically – it’s just about polishing our execution, particularly our final passes,” he said. Johnson-Holmes said he was proud to be a part of the Waratahs’ now-annual fixture in Newcastle, with the club first venturing into

the region last year for a clash against the Sunwolves of Japan. Serves 12: Prep: 50 mins Cook: 50 mins, plus cooling time 250g butter, softened 1 cup caster sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 eggs 1 cup self-raising flour 1/2 cup plain flour 1/4 cup cocoa powder 3/4 cup buttermilk 2 Tbsp red gel food colouring Icing 1 1/2 cups icing sugar 2 Tbsp water Handful rose petals for decoration 1/2 cup peeled, chopped pistachio nuts 1 egg, white separated 1/4 cup caster sugar

Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fanforced). Grease a Pyrex Platinum heart springform pan. Using an electric mixer, beat butter, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine flours and cocoa in a medium bowl. Add flour mixture and buttermilk to butter mixture. Stir to combine. Stir in colouring. Spoon mixture into prepared pan. Level top. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Make icing: combine icing sugar with water and stir, spread onto cooled cake. Take rose petals or edible flowers and gently coat with egg white and sprinkle caster sugar. Set aside to dry. Decorate cake with petals and add pistachios.

Papaya sorbet Recipe created for Ruby Rise by Sarah Bell of Our Nourishing Table. 1 large Ruby Rise papaya, deseeded and flesh removed 1 cup pure coconut milk 2/3 cup pure maple syrup Juice and zest of 1 lime 1 tsp xanthan gum The day before, place the drum of an ice cream churner in the freezer and allow to freeze overnight. The next day; to a blender add: the flesh of 1 large Ruby Rise papaya, coconut milk, pure maple syrup, juice and zest of 1 lime and the xanthan gum. Blend on high until creamy. Remove ice cream maker drum from the freezer and carefully pour sorbet mixture in. Churn for 25 minutes or until mixture resembles soft serve consistency. Pour mixture into a tin and smooth out with a spoon. Cover tin with aluminium foil and place in 32

freezer to set for at least 3-4 hours (after freezing overnight, allow sorbet to stand for 5-10 minutes to soften before serving).

Comedy show sets sail to the Hunter Comedy show H.M.S Pinafore will drop its anchor in Cessnock next month. Set sail with star-crossed lovers, mismatched marriages and mistaken identities as the Hayes Theatre Company brings the show to life. Aboard the ship H.M.S Pinafore the captain’s daughter, Josephine, falls in love with a lowly sailor, Ralph Rackstraw, foiling her father’s plans to marry her to the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter. As the lovers lament their predicament and plan their escape, a surprise disclosure from an unlikely quarter shows that not all is as it seems. Full of laughs and infectious tunes, like I am the Monarch of the Sea and He is an Englishman, the show is a sharp satire of the English social hierarchical system of the

Victorian Age. Written by well-known librettist, Sir William Schwenck Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan almost 150 years ago, the show has been extraordinarily popular throughout Britain and America and has shaped modern musical theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan’s other works, including The Pirates of Penzance, followed with similar success. The themes of the H.M.S Pinafore production are arguably just as relevant today as they were when the operetta first opened. Its humour focuses on love between members of different social classes and pokes unashamed fun at society’s obsession with social status, patriotism, party politics, and the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority. Library’s new look Wangi Wangi Library is set for a makeover as a new $220,000 refurbishment is open for feedback. The library will be upgraded into a contemporary hub to meet the changing community demands. The overhaul, funded partly by round two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund, will create new flexible spaces offering a greater range of options for library users. Portraying the natural sculpting of wind and water on Ireland’s west coastline, she conjures the majesty of that environment in her new works. “Over the last two years, I have also been inspired by the work of the English painter William Turner,” Henley said. “I have tried to capture the skies, landscape, energy, colour and forces that I have experienced along the coast in my new collection.” The textile works suggest birds in motion and offer hints of the landforms and rock formations

seen in the unique limestone area of the Burren mountain ranges. “The ranges, with their subtle and changing palette, deliver drama, which unfolds minute by minute,” Henley described. Working from field sketches, photos and memory, Henley develops a range of images in the studio. These are transferred onto silk screens using a photographic stencil process, then printed multiple times onto dyed calico. Using brushes, the artist then works textile pigments into the surface, building up colour and texture before the piece is washed, then overprinted and painted again. Her intricate works are then embroidered, using both hand and machine stitching, often applying a range of printed and hand-made Japanese papers. Wild Atlantic Coast opens on Wednesday 12 February.

Time to eliminate army grub invasion Gardening in February this year is somewhat different. This is mainly due to water restrictions and a lack of rain, which is generally the norm in February, together with the humidity, which generally causes fungal diseases, especially on roses. Apart from the last week, the humidity has been tolerable, and my roses seem to be free of black spot, which is unusual for this time of year. I find roses tolerate a lack of rain and high temperatures and February is an excellent time to prune roses by one third, deadheading old growth, feed with a bucketful of poultry manure, followed three weeks later by a handful of rose food. This will encourage growth and blooms through to June. This year it is difficult to

determine whether brown patches in the lawn are due to lack of water or army grub, which loves dry weather. This weekend I have seen several cases of army grub presenting at the nursery, which is evidenced by the telltale brown patches rather than the whole lawn looking sad. Whichever product you decide to use to eliminate this pest, apply it late in the afternoon and again in 10 days’ time. February is a good month to give lawns a zap before the weather changes – it would be wise to wait for a wet day to apply fertiliser as many products need to be watered in. Green Flourish is ideal to water over brown patches to encourage new growth. Unfortunately, citrus can be attacked this month by leaf miner, which is indicated by curling

leaves and tracing patterns – in this situation I would seek help as many products which controlled leaf miner are no longer available. It is an ideal month to feed hibiscus with cow manure – do so on a cooler day. Don’t hesitate to give hydrangea a summer prune now, particularly this year as they have struggled through summer. Cut back to two plump buds on old wood, then fertilise with an allpurpose plant food. If you notice new season

My favourite things aiRfORCE - WWii at 21, i decided a new adventure awaited and joined the Women’s auxiliary air force (Waaf) when the war started affecting australia. i started as an aircraftwoman, serving in the Officer’s Mess, and then went on to become an armourer and the rank of Corporal. My love of the airforce will never be forgotten.

auSTRaLia after Jack and i did a couple of organised camping trips into australia’s outback, our love for camping and caravanning became our passion. When Jack retired, we bought a pop-up caravan and took off around australia for a year. We saw many wonderful places and met other caravaners’ who became our friends.

Dot Wheeler was born in Ararat, country Victoria, on 21 January 1920 as the second of five children to Frank and Mary Wooding (her mother lived to 104, just short of her 105th birthday). During the Great Depression, Dot, who was only 14 years old, was sent to live on a farm in the Mallee region of Victoria, before returning to Ararat to work in the train station’s refreshment rooms with two of her sisters. She then moved to Melbourne to work on the buffet cars travelling around Victoria. When WWII came along, she decided a new adventure awaited and signed up to the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). Dot moved to Newcastle post-war after meeting her husband, Jack, in Adelaide while he was in the 84th Army Regiment. She resides in Lake Macquarie and has three children – Ian, Ron, and Joy. 62

TRaVELLing OVERSEaS i had a love for travel, and, throughout my life, i fulfilled those dreams. Jack and i travelled to many countries, including the u.K., the netherlands, Switzerland, france, germany, Singapore, China, Malaysia, indonesia, uSa and new Zealand. We loved meeting different people and talking to them.

faMiLy My other love is my family. i have three children, ian, Ron and Joy. My grandchildren Brooke, Lauren and Kendall have, between them, given me seven great-grandchildren - Lila, Scarlett, Louie, Hugh, Charlie, Estella and Milo. They keep me on my toes when they visit.

SPORTing LifE i loved my sport, playing as well as watching over my life. it started with tennis and hockey, but my main love was golf. i joined Belmont golf Club and played a grade Pennants, as well as ex-service woman golf days over many years. i stopped playing in my late 80s.
