This week... From the editor Welcome back! I hope you’ve had a well-deserved break and feel inspired to tackle 2020 head on. I’ve never been much of a fan of New Year’s resolutions – I tried it once with a healthy diet plan and lasted a few days before I reverted to my old bad habits and love of fast food. However, this year I’m determined to try and be more careful with money. Instead of buying coffee a few times a week, I plan to bring my own and I hope to resist the alluring ease of picking up a pizza on the way home. I think changing habits all comes down to being organised – getting up a bit earlier to make that coffee or making lunch and dinner the night before so it’s ready to go. Easier said than done. Wish me luck!

news Coastline’s transformation edges closer to completion The Newcastle Beach section of Bathers Way is set for a new look as part of the final transformation of the coastline. The section will be split into two stages because it is the most complex part of the work, stretching from Newcastle Beach to Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club. Stage one will include a new skate park and bowl, exercise equipment, access improvements, new amenities, and a kiosk, while stage two features a community hub as part of a redevelopment of the Newcastle Beach pavilion. City of Newcastle reconvened its Bathers Way – King Edward Park to Newcastle Beach Community Reference Group (CRG) last month as it moved towards the next step in completing the 11-kilometre

revitalisation. The group met to discuss the project, including the results of engagement and design changes from 2018, and to give feedback on the latest plans. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the CRG was an important community advisory group that provided valuable feedback as plans were finalised. “The Bathers Way Community Reference Group provides broad representation of groups including board riders, residents and Indigenous stakeholders, giving us important input into the delivery of this project,” she said. “At last [month’s] meeting the group provided positive feedback on the latest designs for the South Newcastle Beach upgrades,

particularly the incorporation of the heritage stone arches of the former picnic pavilion. “The project team also collected feedback on planned public amenity improvements to King Edward Park, including viewing platforms looking over the coast, and upgrades to activate and open Newcastle Beach.” The City developed concept designs for the area, which incorporated a skate park, and released the designs in July last year for community feedback. It stated the designs received an
overwhelmingly positive response. City of Newcastle officers began reviewing the plans and feedback late last year and the designs will be revised subject to the finalisation of the coastal engineering assessment. Over the past decade, the Bathers Way revitalisation has seen Nobbys, Dixon Park, Bar Beach and Merewether transformed. City of Newcastle will begin community engagement to develop a masterplan for the city’s loved Harbour Foreshore Precinct. The plan includes an inclusive, regional level playground, a water-themed play space, and improved cycle amenities across Wharf Road. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the Foreshore Precinct Masterplan was the next step in revitalising the space. The Foreshore Plan of Management will be developed in close consultation with the community. “The community will be involved throughout the process to ensure what is delivered meets community expectations for this important community space,” Cr Nelmes said.
“Foreshore Park and the surrounding harbour precinct is a key attraction among locals and visitors and has important links to the City’s history, so it’s important that people have the opportunity to have their say from the outset. “As Newcastle continues to evolve as a world-class destination, we must continue to invest in quality, accessible public facilities and event spaces within the heart of the city.” The City has received funding from Variety – the Children’s Charity, to help finance the design of an accessible playground. Bid to solve water shortage In what may be a game-changer for solving part of the world’s water shortage problem, an atmospheric water generator is one step closer to commercialisation. The Hyrdo Harvester is designed to extract drinkable water from air at a cost of less than five cents per litre. The project, led by University
of Newcastle Professor Behdad Moghtaderi, has been awarded $330,000 from the NSW Physical Sciences Fund to prepare the prototype for commercial trial. Professor Moghtaderi said the funding would bring his team closer to its goal of developing an accessible, economic solution for the global water shortage crisis.
“By 2025, it’s estimated that 1.8 billion people will live in regions with absolute water scarcity,” Professor Moghtaderi said. “We believe atmospheric water generation is part of the solution. “At any given time there is enough water in the atmosphere to meet the needs of the world’s population for one year.” The Hydro Harvester is an apparatus which absorbs water from the air at night using silica gel. During the day, solar energy or waste heat is used to produce hot, humid air – and the hotter the air, the more water it holds. This hot air is then cooled using ambient air as a heat sink to extract water for drinking or irrigation. Professor Moghtaderi said that, unlike commercially available atmospheric water generators, the Hydro Harvester worked by heating air instead of cooling it. “By using solar thermal energy or waste heat, the Hydro Harvester
has a lower electrical demand and lower average cost of water per litre than commercial atmospheric water generators,” Professor Moghtaderi said. Team member and University of Newcastle Research Associate, David Maddocks, added it was suitable for residential, community or industrial applications. He believed it could help improve water accessibility anywhere in the world. “The simplicity of the technology, with no fancy materials and low maintenance costs, means it’s viable for use in developing countries too,” Mr Maddocks said. “It will produce water at less than five cents per litre, and even cheaper if it’s operated at a larger scale utilising waste heat. “You can imagine the difference this kind of technology would make to drought-stricken areas or in an isolated village of a developing country.”

Dive in Cinema set to make splash in city East Maitland Aquatic Centre will host the city’s first Dive in Cinema this summer. The inaugural event is set to occur over three Friday evenings;
10, 17 and 24 January, during which the aquatic centre will become a hive of activity. “East Maitland Aquatic Centre has such a unique offering, so it’s
fantastic to be able to roll out the Dive in Cinema at the venue this summer,” Maitland Mayor Loretta Baker says. Gates will open at 6pm each day and will feature a range of activities, including a silent disco, food trucks, lawn games, volleyball and a water-themed movie for all audiences starting at 8pm. The opening event will screen 2018 box office hit Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa. All ticket holders will have the opportunity for a free swim before the movie starts. Details about the other two events will be released in the coming weeks; follow the My Maitland Facebook page for updates. Youth Week grants open Applications for Maitland City Council’s Youth Week grants are open. Youth Week is set to be celebrated between Wednesday 1 April and Thursday 9 April this year. It’s the largest annual youth event in Australia and up to $3,000 in funding is provided as part of the Youth Week Council, in collaboration with the Department of Communities and Justice. The council’s Coordinator of Community and Recreation Planning, Emily Livens, said last year’s event was very successful. She added they were “eager to see the plans of our young people come to fruition”. “Events and activities held throughout Youth Week not only help raise awareness of youth issues, but they also
give our young people an outlet to express themselves through their involvement in planning and managing the events which, in turn, provides them with important skills and experience,” she said. Applications will be assessed against the National Youth Week and Maitland City Council guidelines by the council’s Youth Week Committee, which is made up of young people aged 12 to 25. To be successful, applicants need to provide information on how young people will be involved throughout the planning and running of Youth Week. Applications close on Monday 3 February. February You will have noticed brown patches in your lawn early this summer. Yes, it could just be dry, but all indications lead to army grub as it loves a hot dry summer. Treat every 10 days to eliminate this lawn pest and others, including crickets and
March This is a busy gardening month, beginning with fertilising citrus – container grown plants should only be fertilised with Bounceback, not citrus food. Ground-grown trees should be fed with poultry manure, followed a week or two later by an application of citrus food. Corms of cyclamen should be replanted, fed and watered during March to have beautiful winter blooms. The traditional planting date for sweet peas is St Patrick’s Day. Vegetables and flower beds should be prepared
this month for autumn and winter planting – dig in poultry manure, then wait a week before planting. Colour during winter can be achieved by planting lobelia, pansies and marigolds. Cabbages and cauliflowers need to be dusted to deter cabbage moths and butterfl ies. Next week: continuing the yearly gardening calendar (April, May and June).

My favourite things TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE Leading fundraising treks around the world for local charities has become my number one favourite past-time. In fact it’s really how I love to take my holidays these days. Being on the ground in a foreign country with like-minded people in support of local causes fills my heart to the brim.

Whether it’s trekking mountains, hiking glaciers, road-tripping in Europe (or anywhere really), ziplining in slate quarries, abseiling off buildings, or back stage VIP experiences at a Def Leppard concert… you name it, I’ll have a damn good crack at it!

As the Events & Community Relations Manager for Compass Housing Services in Newcastle, Michelle is responsible for development, planning, coordination of events, community collaborative projects and public relations functions for the not-for-profit organisation. Major projects include the annual coordination of a Hunter Homeless Connect Day event for the charity, Hunter Homeless Connect Inc. Outside of her day job, she’s also a team leader for Inspired Adventures, leading fundraising treks around the world for local charities and has recently qualified as a marriage celebrant. Born in Sydney, she spent most of her childhood in Darwin after moving to the city with her parents in 1974, just in time for Cyclone Tracy. She and her family survived the experience and stayed on for another 14 years. Moving to Newcastle in 2005, Michelle has spent 10 of the last 15 years fundraising for various local charities, raising over $180,000 in her spare time. 30
BUSH WALKING Some people call it forest bathing, others like me will hug the odd tree here and there, but it’s safe to say, immersing myself in nature is the perfect way to escape the rat race and calm the heck down. Nothing else ticks that box better for me.
MUSIC Anyone who knows me well, understands my first and foremost obsession with the Boss (Bruce Springsteen), but I’m also a huge supporter of live music in general and will always get to a local gig or festival whenever I can. To me, life without music is unimaginable.
