We’ve continued a tradition of putting summer fashion on the cover of this special edition, which will be out for two weeks. news Hunter Region set for level two water restrictions The Lower Hunter is set to face level two water restrictions for the first time since the 1980s. It comes as the region’s dams fell to their lowest levels in almost 40 years, with Hunter Water’s total water storages dropping to 56.7%. The Bureau of Meteorology has also forecast another hot and dry summer. “We have a severe drought that’s affecting our region and most of the state, and the forecast is, unfortunately, for those hot and dry conditions to continue until at least February,” Hunter Water’s Executive Drought Lead, Darren Cleary, says. “While we hope to receive decent rain soon, we need to be prepared in the event it doesn’t arrive. “This means working together with our community to save as much

water as we can. “Level two water restrictions will start on 20 January 2020 if the hot and dry conditions continue.” Under the restrictions, outdoor watering is limited to 15 minutes every second day, vehicles and buildings can only be washed with a bucket, and showers are limited to four minutes. All hoses must have a trigger nozzle, sprinklers cannot be used, and dripping taps and leaking toilets must be repaired as soon as possible. Other tips to be more water wise include collecting running water from your sink, shower or bath in a bucket to use on the garden; and waiting for a full load before turning on the dishwasher or washing machine.

“Small, simple changes can make a big difference,” Mr Cleary says. He is hopeful that the restrictions will build on the savings already made by the community. “Our community has responded incredibly well since we announced the start of water restrictions by using 17% less than what we expected, given the very hot and dry conditions we’ve experienced,” he says. “This saving amounts to the
average water use of 62,000 households in the same period.” Hunter Water is also progressing on planning approvals for a new Drought Response Desalination Plant at Belmont. news Ovarian cancer advocate leaves legacy Tributes have flowed for ovarian cancer advocate and 2019 Newcastle Citizen of the Year Jill Emberson following her death at the age of 60. Jill was surrounded by loved ones in her final moments last week. A statement, released online by family members, described her as an “inspiration to all who knew and loved her”. “Jill was a fearless campaigner for ovarian cancer; a brilliant journalist; broadcaster; beloved wife, fierce mother; friend to many,” the statement read. “She worked tirelessly all her life to call out injustice; make the world a better place. “Jill put ovarian cancer firmly in the mind of Australians and her successful advocacy will save the lives of countless women in the future.” A former ABC Newcastle

breakfast host, Jill was diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer in 2016. She founded Pink Meets Teal, a campaign that aims to promote funding fairness and build a broad army of advocates for the deadly gynaecological illness. Ovarian cancer, regarded as rare or less common, has a five-year survival rate of about 46%. In comparison, common cancers, such as breast and prostate, sit at 91% and 95% respectively. “Historically, most of the funding has gone to the common cancers, across the board, in Australia,” Jill said earlier this year. “That leads to more research, which has a snowballing effect and you get better outcomes. “The government is taking the approach of ‘Let’s get the biggest bang for buck and solve the most common cancer’, and breast cancer
is certainly the biggest. “But, now that we have survival rates of 91%, it’s time to turn the attention to cancers such as mine.” Jill’s advocacy and journalistic excellence was recognised with Newcastle’s Citizen of the Year award on Australia Day. She then visited Canberra’s Parliament House in February to push for more funding and, within months, the Federal Government had committed $20 million towards research grants. Pink Meets Teal has called for immediate action to fulfill Jill’s wish of reaching 100,000 signatures on an online petition and continue the fight for funding fairness. news Police plead for safe festive celebrations Newcastle City Police District Commander, Superintendent Brett Greentree, says the “salads, prawns and Christmas crackers can wait” as thousands of families make their final travel preparations. While the festive period is a time for celebration, Superintendent Greentree urges everyone to do so in a safe environment. “This is the time of year people want to spend with their loved ones – our job is to make sure you can enjoy the festive season safely and without disruption,” he says. “Emergency services don’t get Christmas Day off – we are out there in our local community to ensure everyone is having a good time but also knowing their limits. “Christmas is also a time when thousands of people are commuting between destinations. “Please remember – do not drink
and drive and always take regular breaks.” Double demerit points will be in force for speeding, drink driving, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences during Operation Safe Arrival, which starts at midnight tonight (Thursday 19 December). The State Government has also launched its mobile phone detection system in a bid to crackdown on illegal users. Fixed and portable cameras were switched on across NSW on 1 December, with warning letters to be issued for the first three months. Offending drivers are then set to receive five demerit points and a $344 fine, or $457 in a school zone. Apart from the roads, Newcastlebased officers will patrol the city’s CBD and suburbs to target antisocial behaviour and alcohol-related
violence. Superintendent Greentree says police also want to remind the public about home safety and security during the Christmas holiday period. “If you are planning on travelling away, please make sure that homes are locked and secure; that security systems, doors, windows, alarms and lights are properly installed and activated; that all perimeter fences are in good order and kept closed and locked to restrict unauthorised access to your property; and that any valuables are kept out of clear view,” he says. “Thieves don’t take a holiday – they often use this opportunistic time to break into homes while families are out of town. “Have family, a trusted friend or neighbour check on your home.” - Ben Murphy

news New centre planned for Myuna Bay Myuna Bay is set to be home to a new state-of-theart sport and recreation facility. In March, the Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre was controversially closed and evacuated by the State Government due to fears that the nearby coal ash dam could pose a risk in the event of a large earthquake. Geoscience Australia – the federal agency which measures that risk – deemed the chance of a 5.9 magnitude or bigger quake occurring within 100 kilometres of Myuna Bay as a one-in-5,000year event. However, the government and Origin Energy announced last week they had “come to a compromise”, after the site was once again deemed a risk to the community. “A second independent report has come back and, unfortunately, it recommends that the original centre cannot be reopened,” Independent Member for Lake Macquarie, Greg Piper, says. “But we’ve been able to negotiate an agreement that will deliver a new state-of-the-art sport and rec centre, as well as deliver compensation to affected parties, protection of the original site, and
options for staff. “Origin has agreed to redevelop another site nearby on land they currently own.” The energy company will fund the development and fast-track the repair of the ash dam wall at Eraring, which poses a risk to Myuna Bay, the lake, and people travelling on Wangi Road. The Office of Sport will be given a 99-year lease on the new site. The facility is expected to replicate previous offerings at the former grounds at a minimum, with the Office of Sport set to look into other possible additions. Mr Piper maintained the site’s closure was “handled appallingly” and added it came as a shock to the entire community. “The impact on staff was devastating,” Mr Piper says. “The permanent and part-time staff were left wondering what their future would be.” All current staff will be offered redundancy or redeployment to other centres and given priority re-employment when the new centre is opened. need to occur before the facility can be built, but he hopes the new centre will be complete in two years. “It’ll be a modern facility and the first new sports centre in NSW in 20 to 30 years,” he says. - Elizabeth Symington

news Warning over poor air quality Health professionals have encouraged people to heed air quality warnings. The Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded hazardous particulate matter (PM) levels in various areas across the state over the last few weeks. The hazardous level can cause health issues, particularly for people living with existing respiratory or heart conditions, as well as the elderly and children. Hunter New England Health’s Public Health Physician, Dr David Durrheim, says that, during times of hazardous levels, it is best to stay indoors with windows and doors tightly closed. “The physical air quality doesn’t always reflect the small particulates so, while there are warnings in place and while the conditions are recorded as
hazardous by air quality monitors, one should really restrict one’s outdoor activities as much as possible,” he says. “Across the Hunter New England in the past week [or so] we’ve had 156 people admitted with asthma and breathing problems compared to the fiveyear average of 121, so about a 30% increase. “Similarly, the ambulance retrievals are up by about 30% as well for asthma and respiratory problems.” The AQI PM10 and PM2.5 readings refer to particles in the air and, due to the bushfires, many parts of the state are recording well over the hazardous level of 200. “The bushfire smoke doesn’t only have large particles – what we call PM10s – it [also] has very

small particles, PM2.5s, which go right down deep into the alveoli in the lungs and that can cause inflammation,” Dr Durrheim says. The only way to decrease the affects is to avoid the hazardous conditions or buy a well-fitting P2 mask. Face masks, available at local supermarkets, and even surgical masks are not effective in blocking the micro particles. Most of the effects from poor air quality are short-term, but Dr
Durrheim warns that there isn’t a way to control or decrease your reaction other than by staying indoors, avoiding the conditions, and preventing physical exertion if outside. “The only solution to all of this is copious rain – rain that will settle the particulates but also hopefully extinguish the bushfires, so they no longer contribute any further,” he says. news Hostel a home away from home A group of young Indigenous men aim to grab life’s opportunities “with both hands” at a hostel that transforms into a home away from home. Some boarders travel more than 600 kilometres to live at Kirinari, an Aboriginal Hostels Limited secondary education residence in Garden Suburb, and attend Hunter Sports High and Cardiff High School. Many are aspiring rugby league players hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous residents and ex-NRL stars Timana Tahu, Greg Inglis, and Ashley Gordon. Head of Boarding Lehetta Lane-Porter, who lives on site with her family, wants the boys to chase their dreams while also learning family values of respect, responsibility and relationships. “We cater for 12 boys here,” she says. “All of them come from rural communities for an education, first and foremost, but we also provide opportunities with sport, work experience, and that kind of thing. “Coming from the bush to the city gets them out of that rut at home with regards to peer
pressure within the community and crime rate – it’s removing them from that before they get involved in what their mates are doing.” Member for Shortland Pat Conroy and Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians, Linda Burney, visited the hostel last week. A Wiradjuri woman, Ms Burney told the boys she was proud of them as First Nations people who were working hard to achieve their goals. Ms Lane-Porter says it’s a boost for them to meet people in government. “[They] don’t really understand the role and I know Linda touched on the voting system and how she wanted the young boys to get in and do that as soon as they turn 18 [years old],” she says. “That gives them a voice within Australia too. “Linda also spoke about opportunities and said there are two things in life that people can’t take away from you. “One of them is your identity, so your Aboriginality, and the second is your education – grab it with both hands, go from there, and anything can happen.” After moving away at the age of 11, Ms Lane-

Porter understands how difficult it is to be so far from home. However, she says the hostel’s motto – come in as strangers, leave as brothers – resonates with the boarders. “I really appreciate the fact that they obviously trust in myself and the staff who work here to guide them through their educational journey,” Ms Lane-Porter says. “A lot of people still comment on that [motto] and pop in on their way through Newcastle to say that it’s the best time of their lives coming here.” - Ben Murphy

Safe haven for koalas
Two new passenger train services will run between Singleton and Newcastle from Sunday 5 January. Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole, announced in October the new services would operate seven days a week, giving travellers six return options from Sydney and Newcastle on weekdays and four on weekends. The trains will run for 12 months as a trial to gauge demand and are the result of more than a decade of campaigning by the Two More Trains for Singleton group, supported by Singleton council. “Our community has worked incredibly hard for the introduction of these services, and now it’s up to us to use them to make sure they remain a permanent fixture on the timetable between Newcastle and Singleton,” Singleton Mayor Sue Moore said. “I’m really excited to see these new passenger services in operation and, more importantly, to see the people of Singleton and all the way down the line putting them to good use not only to keep them operating, but to leverage even more services.”
The development of a new sanctuary in the Hunter Valley could help prevent the dwindling koala population. Australia has the worst mammal extinction rate in the world and, due to bushfires across NSW and Queensland, large numbers of koalas are now lost every day. Conservation organisation Aussie Ark’s answer to this crisis is to create Koala Ark, the world’s first wild koala sanctuary. “At the current rate of decline, koalas are on a trajectory to be extinct in NSW by 2050,” Ark President Tim Faulkner says. “We can provide a refuge and, at the very least, put measures in place to slow the trajectory.” Aussie Ark has obtained 5,750 hectares of wilderness at Barrington Tops in a bid to create an area free from predators and disease and protect the population from fires. The Ark is seeking donations towards this vital sanctuary and hopes to raise $369,000 to build a safe and secure environment. Blue-green algae levels have increased to amber alert at Telarah Lagoon and remain at high alert for Walka Water Works. According to Maitland City Council’s Group Manager Planning and Environment, Matthew Prendergast, the current high temperatures and low flow rates at the sites are encouraging the blue-green algae to grow, posing a human health and environmental challenge. “The potential exists for algal blooms to appear in a very short time period and caution must be taken using and entering non-flowing waterbodies,” he said. “Once an algal bloom has developed, there isn’t a great deal authorities can do to reverse the situation except wait for a climatic change. “Council will monitor the lagoons at Walka Water Works, Telarah and Rathluba for blue-green algae growth over the summer months.” To help reduce the likelihood of growth this summer you can lessen the amount of nutrients going into local waterways by washing vehicles on the grass, cleaning gutters, and by applying fertilisers according to instructions.

Wallsend State MP Sonia Hornery has welcomed news that the Newcastle City Police District will receive three new police officers in the latest allocation of recruits. Ms Hornery has been lobbying the NSW Minister for Police, David Elliott, and NSW Assistant Police Commissioner, Mark Jones, for additional resources. She states the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens areas have been previously ignored, with just 18 officers allocated in the last three years. Architectural crown jewels reach 90-year milestone It’s been 90 years since Newcastle celebrated the completion of two of its architectural crown jewels. In late 1929, the City Hall and Civic Theatre were opened as part of a twin £300,000 development dubbed “Civic Block”, with a week of festivities kicking off that December. Apart from the two openings, bands also played in King Edward Park, while other entertainment included a soccer tournament, competitive woodchop, surf carnival, and aerial pageant in District Park. “It’s hard to imagine those days of British pomp and pageantry, but the sense of civic pride associated with the two openings, and their city-making significance, leaps off the pages of news reports from
that week,” Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, said. Memorial lights dedicated to the founder of the Civic Block, Alderman Morris Light, were unveiled outside the town hall, as were portraits of the city’s first Mayor, James Hannell. At the opening of the Civic Theatre, the great racehorse Phar Lap featured in a screening of that year’s Melbourne Cup. It was followed by a recorded oration from then-Prime Minister James Scullin and the romantic drama Behind That Curtain. Notable billings in the Civic Theatre’s long history include The Robe in 1954, the first film shot in widescreen cinemascope; Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats The Musical in 1989, legendary British rock band

City hit the front in the third minute when an inch-perfect pass found talented playmaker Adrian Luna, who slid the ball under Newcastle goalkeeper Glen Moss. The visitors then doubled their lead just as the Jets were beginning to look dangerous. Josh Brilliante clipped a clever cross into the six-yard box in the 28th minute and it was headed home by Luna. Hunter-based representatives Maya Stewart and Katrina Barker have been named in the NSW Waratahs’ final 30-member squad ahead of the 2020 Super W campaign. Stewart, in particular, has shown terrific form in preseason, bagging four tries for Australia A against Samoa during last month’s Oceania Women’s Rugby Championship in Fiji. The Nelson Bay winger, who was playing just her second game for the national side, scored in the 12th, 16th, 24th and 29th minutes as Australia A stormed to a 27-5 victory. Stewart and Barker will now link up with the NSW squad, which is spearheaded by newly appointed coach Campbell Aitken.
Aitken said selecting his final squad was a challenge. “We’ve put together a really strong squad and we are excited about getting stuck into preparations for the season ahead,” he said. “In saying that, we had to make some tough decisions and leave out some fantastic players who did a great job over the last month of training. “Through the Jack Scott Cup and the programs run by NSW Rugby we have developed some incredible depth right across the park, which has also seen us have some strong representation at a national level.” Apart from NSW, Stewart and Barker are also teammates for The Waratahs in the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union competition.

Taco time Restaurant Brands has opened the doors of its first Taco Bell restaurant in NSW. Located at Jesmond Central, the restaurant’s launch in early December attracted Taco lovers from across the Hunter Region. The restaurant sells all the Taco Bell classics that are loved in America, including the Cheesy Gordita Crunch and Crunchy Taco. Restaurant Brands General Manager at Taco Bell, Clark Wilson, believes the restaurant will provide a great experience. “Taco Bell is a culture-centric brand; around the world it has attracted social media memes and casts of international celebrity mentions,” he says. “It’s a brand that brings people together and encourages the social experience of food, and we are pleased to bring this experience to

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be invited to the VIP launch. Here is a short review of the things I got to try. Crunchy Taco Just like any taco, this one was messy to eat. I liked it but felt like it was missing something. Quesadilla It was a little spicy for my liking; two bites and my mouth was on fire. Cheesy Gordita Crunch This one was my favourite; it is taco wrapped in a tortilla. It is crunchy, soft and quite tasty. I would eat it again.

Book promotes acceptance As Laura* grew older, her peers started to notice differences. The constant rocking motions, repeating words and funny noises – it made the Lake Macquariebased student feel upset and alone. Now aged nine, Laura has been diagnosed with autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, anxiety, and Tourette’s/Tic disorder. Her mother, Hellena*, who is also autistic, understands the struggles Laura faces and, alongside father and husband, Chris, they are dedicated to improving awareness and acceptance. So, Laura wrote a book titled Just like you except a little bit different to help her classmates understand and accept her, as well as others like her. It has since been published primarily for families who have children with differences and invisible disabilities in order to show the children that they are not alone. “Laura would come home from school upset that people were noticing things she would do like
repeating words and sniffing her hands, pencils, anything,” Chris says. “We sat down and asked her: ‘What do you want to tell people?’ “The three of us decided to put it into a book, and she chose the pictures. “It’s not clinical, it is from a nine-year-old’s perspective. “She showed it to her classmates, and they loved it.” In one scenario, Laura wears headphones that aren’t plugged in – this is because she’s scared of loud noises, such as hand dryers in public toilets, while groups and shopping centres make it hard for her to concentrate. At other times, there is a problem with her clothes. This includes feeling tight like she can’t move and scratchy like sandpaper. It also hurts if her socks don’t sit right, so turning them inside out can help. Following its publication, the book has proved popular online, with buyers from as far as the

What’s on NEWCASTLE IN PRINT: 2019 marks the anniversary of a number of significant events in the history of the Newcastle region. This exhibition uses newspaper reports and photographs to remember the Hunter Valley floods and the Newcastle earthquake, the controversial coal strike of 1949, and the closure of BHP in Newcastle. It also revisits the celebrations of 1929, when both the Civic Theatre and Newcastle City Hall were opened for the first time, as well as the arrival of 1,896 immigrants from Europe on board the Fairsea in 1949, changing Newcastle forever. It is on until Saturday 22 February at the Local History Lounge, Newcastle Library (15 Laman Street, Newcastle). KING OF CONCRETE: A part of Australia’s premier series of bowl skate competitions, the Australian Skateboarding Federation will draw skaters to Bar Beach on Saturday 21 December to battle it out for prizemoney, skate products, and rankings. Façon’s summer runway has put Newcastle on the world’s fashion map. The Hunter-based magazine transformed the iconic Newcastle Ocean Baths, with more than 300 fashionable guests enjoying champagne and canapes before being seated in the bleachers. The sunset show included Newcastle’s coastline as an incredible backdrop. With a hot summer ahead and the ongoing drought showing no sign of relenting, we’ve put together a few tips to help you save water, courtesy of Hunter Water. Showers

Aim for a four-minute shower or the length of your favourite song! Did you know that if we all shortened our shower by only one minute, we could save the region four million litres of water in a single day? What kind of showerhead is in your shower? Old-style showerheads can use up to 15-20 litres per minute, whereas upgrading to a three-star WELS rated showerhead would reduce this to no more than nine litres a minute. That’s four buckets less water used in your four-minute shower. Keep a bucket in the shower while you wait for the water to heat up. That way, you can put this extra water to good use around the house,

Toilets A continuously running toilet can leak up to 60,000 litres of water per year as the water trickles down the back of the bowl. Follow these steps to detect a leak and conserve your bathroom water use: Remove the lid of your toilet cistern. Place a few drops of food dye into the cistern. Do not flush your toilet for 10-15 minutes. If the dye has seeped down into the bowl when you return, then you know you have a leak.

Summer pests out with a vengeance Well, hard to believe, but this is my last column for this year. Merry Christmas to you all before I start handing out jobs for the next couple of weeks. Summer pests are out with a vengeance. The worst of these is mealybug, which presents as sticky cotton wool and can be hard to beat – it hides deep down in folds or where stems join branches. Some organic products target this pest, but not always with success. I prefer white oil and Malathon, which also solves the problem of scale insects, as well as those nasty stink bugs which invade citrus trees. As tomatoes ripen, fruit fly will begin to attack, although this year I have had many enquiries about green grubs eating the fruit which could be eliminated with tomato dust. Fruit fly are now a huge problem as many insecticides have been removed from use – the only solutions now are traps and sticky baits. Early intervention helps to paint the tomato stake with a paintable mix of Vegemite and
Malathon, which attracts the female fly. I am surprised that army grub has begun early this year, although they are prolific when summer is dry! Apply relevant products late in the afternoon and water lightly to carry it through to the roots, then apply again in about 10 days to catch the next hatching cycle. Bees, as we are all becoming aware, are important in life’s cycle and even the safest of sprays can be injurious to bees. Always spray late in the afternoon when bees, hopefully, have gone to bed. One last job after Christmas. Those families who have purchased a living Christmas tree – when the festivities are over, please don’t plunge the tree back out into the full sun. Ease the long-suffering tree from total shade to full sun over a few weeks. Please water it well, hose off the Christmas dust, and give it a healthy drink of a foliant fertiliser such as Flourish.

THIS WEEK • Prune Golden Duranta hedges tightly to maintain summer growth. • Cut back heads of hydrangeas burnt by the heat – only cut the flowers, leave the stems for new blooms. • Don’t panic about dry lawns, a couple of quick showers and it will green up. I am saving my water for delicate or newly planted shrubs in my garden. • Watch using grey water – only use it on lawns, particularly don’t use it on vegetable gardens or fruit producing trees.

Spending time with my family always puts a smile on my dial; three adult offspring and two grandkids provide enormous joy. I’ve been caring for my dad for the past seven years, which has taught me patience and gratitude. My mum is an inspiration!
COAL POINT PROGRESS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT
Suzanne’s links to the local landcare movement are extensive. She formed the Coal Point Progress Association (CPPA) landcare group in 1995 – one of the first in the city – was part of the team that established the Lake Macquarie Landcare Network, delivered major landcare projects in Warners Bay and, more recently, completed a $250,000 Threatened Species Last Stand on Coal Point peninsula project. Suzanne’s heartfelt connection to the environment fuels her passion to protect and preserve the local environment and, in doing so, supports the well-being of the community. She has worked in roles supporting not-for-profit landcare groups and is currently working with the Australian Association of Bush Regenerators and still volunteering with the CPPA.
COAL POINT PROGRESS ASSOCIATION The Coal Point Progress Association has been my connection with the community, allowing me to learn, share and develop personally and professionally. I was elected as President in 1995 and can’t see myself stopping…so the next big project is awaiting. It will be something to conserve the local bushland that connects and unites us all.
VOLUNTEERING Volunteering has been a very conscious choice and I have received as much as I’ve given. It has allowed me to pursue passion projects, develop skills and garner wisdom from those around me. All of my paid employment has been made possible through volunteering.
It makes perfect sense.
