This week... From the editor There’s the adage that bad things come in threes. So, when the oven stopped working, the roller door wouldn’t open, and then my phone broke, I thought I’d be out of the woods. Not the case. A kind person also decided to side swipe my parked car in a residential street and drove off without leaving a note. By this point I thought it was acceptable to wallow in self-pity for a little while. After sitting in stunned silence at my misfortune, I switched on the laptop and started scrolling through a few news articles. As you can imagine, many of them related to the bushfires. There were reports of at least three people dead, more than a hundred homes lost and, as this publication prepared to go to print, parts of the state were battling a catastrophic fire danger rating. Talk about putting everything in perspective. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian also declared a week-long state of emergency on Monday due to the unprecedented conditions; hundreds of schools closed on Tuesday over safety concerns; and our brave firefighters were tirelessly working to save more lives and homes. I hope everyone has stayed safe and heeded the warnings during this testing period. - Ben Murphy

news Ocean baths’ petition rides wave of signatures Novocastrians are jumping in the deep end to save the Newcastle and Merewether ocean baths. Following an announcement from City of Newcastle, which called for expressions of interest to redevelop the baths, a petition to save them from privatisation is gaining traction, receiving more than 5,000 signatures so far. Campaign Coordinator Jessica Miller said the campaign, Save Our Ocean Baths – Newcastle and Merewether NSW, was about sending a message to the council and state government. “We would like more community consultation with how both of the pavilions, at Newcastle and Merewether Ocean Baths, are refurbished or restored,” she said. “These places are important to
the community; they are important to maintaining the character of the town, and we expect council to take that seriously and invest the dollars to keep them as they are to maintain Newcastle in the way that we currently love.” City of Newcastle plans to redevelop the iconic Newcastle and Merewether ocean baths pavilions in overhauls that may include restaurants, recreational and community facilities, and other services. Newcastle Ocean Baths’ iconic art deco exterior is proposed to be retained in any redevelopment, while new public change rooms, disabled access, car parking, new seating, shading and other community facilities will be mandatory inclusions at both sites.

As well as reinvigorating the baths precincts, the council states final outcomes will promote access to the Bathers Way, preserve views from lifeguard and first aid rooms, and provide swimmers with year-
round protection from prevailing winds. Some 5,800 square metres of space is on offer at the Newcastle Ocean Baths, built in 1922. Continued on page 12

news Charity’s video sends important message

Local charity Got Your Back Sista will launch a new video this White Ribbon Day (Friday 22 November) to bring awareness to domestic violence. “The video is sending an important message out to the community that anyone who is experiencing domestic violence has our support,” Got Your Back Sista founder Melissa Histon says. “We all stand behind people who are experiencing domestic violence and we want them to know that it is not acceptable.” The charity has joined forces with City of Newcastle, the Newcastle and Hunter White Ribbon Committee, and other organisations to complete the project. Through the partnership, the charity hopes to spread its message even further. “[We] really wanted to show
the organisation’s commitment to educating the community about domestic violence,” Ms Histon adds. “The first step in creating change and ending domestic violence is to use our voices and raise awareness.” In an exciting new development, the charity’s logo will also be featured on 22-year-old Supercars driver Brenton Grove’s car during the Newcastle 500, which goes from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 November. Ms Histon says Got Your Back Sista is grateful to Mr Grove and his team. “He’d previously supported the White Ribbon Foundation and I think the fact that he chose to support a community organisation shows real maturity, commitment to community, and the importance of our message,” she says. In October, White Ribbon Australia announced it would close
its doors after going into liquidation. It had sought to raise awareness about domestic violence by appointing men as White Ribbon ambassadors since its establishment in 2007. Ms Histon says it is a sad loss. “They did really great work, especially around working with and educating people in schools, workplaces and communities,” she says. Despite the loss, Got Your Back Sista is looking at ways to help fill the void. “Got Your Back Sista believes in campaigning and education to make a change – we need to keep talking about [domestic violence] because violence thrives in silence,” Ms Histon says. news Donations for fire victims Newcastle Hunter Mummas (NHM) has partnered with a community group to send donations to fire affected areas. With more than 60 bushfires burning across the state this week, NHM – a mothers’ support group – joined forces with Convoy Missions Australia to help communities in need. “[We] were getting so many messages from mums in the area,” NHM member Mel Sargeant says. “We just wanted to help.” Ms Sargeant says they are asking the local community to donate nonperishable goods to give to people who have lost everything. “[Families] don’t have access to necessities, like nappies for their children – the grocery shop shelves are empty,” she adds. Water, saline, face masks, good quality clothing, bedding, sheets,
towels, children’s items, pet supplies, kitchen items and personal items will be accepted. They are requesting that no furniture be donated because of a lack of space within the trucks. If you would like to donate to the NHM and Convoy Missions Australia drive, drop offs can be made at 45 Aries Way, Elermore Vale before Saturday 16 November. On Monday, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian declared a weeklong state of emergency as part of catastrophic fire warnings. This declaration gave emergency powers to the Rural Fire Service (RFS), providing them the capacity to coordinate evacuations, redirect traffic, shut down gas, oil, electricity and water services, and demolish buildings. From page 4 Another 2,200 square metres is available at the Merewether pavilion under leases of up to 21 years. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the redevelopment was an exciting opportunity to enhance and rejuvenate Newcastle’s public assets. “The City is committed to improving public and community spaces along our coastline, and a commercial partnership could allow us to significantly enhance and manage these precious facilities in a financially responsible way,” she said. However, Ms Miller believed it was difficult to understand the reasoning behind what was happening and argued that the proposed plans would affect the appeal of Newcastle, stating they did not match the natural charm of the coastline.
She claimed the council had not spoken to the community to find out what they wanted. Save Our Ocean Baths is hoping to bring the expressions of interest process to a halt. According to Ms Miller, both the Merewether and Newcastle ocean baths hold memories and stories of Newcastle. She believed the council and government should be working at restoring the infrastructure that already existed. “[The campaign] will support whatever the community wants, and it would be great if the council had that same attitude,” Ms Miller said. To sign the petition, search Save Our Ocean Baths - Newcastle and Merewether NSW at change. org. Expressions of interest for the baths’ projects will close on Tuesday 17 December at 2pm. - Elizabeth Symington

news Foundation on mission to break cycle of abuse A charity that helps children who have been orphaned or abandoned by their parents due to illicit drug use has been handed a timely financial boost. The Mirabel Foundation supports young people up to the age of 17 – the overlooked victims of substance abuse in Australia – and strives to restore a child’s self-worth, as well as their hopes for the future. It is the vision of Chief Executive Jane Rowe, who identified a vulnerable group of children and took action to make a positive difference in their lives. In her work as a Drug and Alcohol Counsellor, Ms Rowe witnessed the devastating effects that drug use has on the children of drug users and the cycle of abuse that repeats itself through
generations if action is not taken. Ms Rowe says Mirabel aims to break the cycle through providing tailored recreation programs for children in need. These programs include early intervention, family camps and events, kinship carer support groups, social awareness programs, and many others. Delivered by experienced social workers, they help to break down the social isolation many of these young people face, allowing them to achieve their goals and sense of belonging. “[We’re] currently assisting more than 680 children living throughout NSW,” Ms Rowe says. “Almost 50% of the children Mirabel supports in NSW are currently living in the Hunter and
Central Coast regions. “This is a critical time where the need for Mirabel’s services in the Hunter Region has grown beyond expectations.” The charity has received a $48,000 grant through the St George Foundation’s Community Grants program. Ms Rowe says the financial assistance is vital to help it continue the programs and make positive change. “The grant from St George Foundation will go directly towards
continuing our work with children and young people in the Hunter Region, offering respite activities as well as therapeutic experiences to foster young people’s self-esteem and teamwork skills,” she says. “With [the grants] help, we can provide essential care for young people and their carers living in the Hunter Region, with the knock-on effect of reducing isolation and improving their circumstances.” Visit mirabelfoundation.org.au for more information. - Elizabeth Symington

Share some joy this Christmas
The most wonderful time of the year is almost here but, for some, Christmas can be a very tough time. Charities across NSW are calling on individuals to share some joy this year by donating to their Christmas appeals. Greater Charitable Foundation launched its Youth Off The Streets Christmas Appeal this week. The foundation is encouraging people to donate new gifts for young
people aged between 12 and 21. It suggests donating sporting equipment, clothing, bags and beauty products, as well as gift vouchers from retailers. “Every child deserves to wake up on Christmas morning and unwrap presents, which is why we have extended our partnership with Youth Off The Streets to help brighten and make it a greater Christmas for those in need,”
Greater Charitable Foundation Chief Executive, Anne Long, says. Youth Off The Streets is an independent charity that provides support to homeless and disadvantaged young people, while the Greater Charitable Foundation funds life changing initiatives to help families and communities in need. To donate to this appeal, visit any Greater Bank branch within the Hunter and Newcastle up until Friday 6 December. Other Christmas appeals have been launched by The Smith Family, Samaritans, Salvation Army, Barnardos, St Vincent de Paul Society, and various others. These charities don’t want anyone to go without this Christmas. Visit their websites for more information about their appeals. - Elizabeth Symington
Guraki Aboriginal Advisory Committee has celebrated two decades of strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Novocastrians. Officially launched in 1999, the committee marked the milestone last Thursday evening at an anniversary event held at Newcastle Museum. The past and future came together in a unique ceremony, highlighting the heritage and culture of local Aboriginal peoples, followed by a video presentation of Guraki and City of Newcastle’s journey over 20 years. “Into the future, Guraki will continue to foster a more inclusive Newcastle community, and to promote to Council the concerns and interests that affect Aboriginal people in Newcastle,” Committee Chair, Rob Russell, says.

Nic Jovanovic is feeling “blessed and super happy to be alive” after overcoming two bouts of testicular cancer. The Newcastle-based tradesperson, who starred on reality television series Married at First Sight (MAFS), was first diagnosed with the illness at the age of 24. He eventually defeated it, only for the cancer to return between Christmas and New Year’s in 2018. A day after the debut of MAFS, Jovanovic underwent surgery to remove his left testicle and endured follow-up chemotherapy in February. Complications from his initial diagnosis also resulted in him being unable to conceive naturally. The 28-year-old was open about his cancer battle on the show, which attracted an “overwhelming” response from the public. “I literally received thousands of messages showing love and appreciation for opening up, but also for talking about it at such a young age,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “So many people who were suffering thanked

me for sharing my story and experiences, which gave them some sort of guidance and closure that everything will be okay – you just have to stay strong when it gets tough. “People were asking for advice and I helped as many as I could who reached out. “You can’t let it win – just give cancer the middle finger and stay strong.” Jovanovic used his newfound celebrity status to sign up for the Movember Foundation’s 2019 campaign as an official Mo Bro. Each November, the foundation challenges males from across Australia to grow a moustache to raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, nine men die from prostate cancer every day, while there are 200,000 males living with the disease throughout the country. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men and, despite a survival rate of 95%,
there’s still 1 in 20 who will not make it. Jovanovic said he was thrilled to be involved in this year’s campaign. “I am so grateful for all the amazing things Movember does – from donating money to research, to helping raise awareness to so many men out there,” he said. “I hope I can keep working with Movember for a long time and can keep on to both Mo Bros and Mo Sistas in staying on top of their health checks, to be vigilant, to speak up and do what’s right. “If anyone has anything they are concerned with, jump on the Movember website or see your doctor as soon as possible. “Don’t put anything off with the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude – that needs to change. “We need men to stop that stigma and to let their guard down and get checks if something doesn’t feel right.” Apart from cancer, the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows six men, on average, take their lives in Australia each day, making it the biggest killer of males under 45. Jovanovic spoke about the impact of reality television on contestants’ mental health. He believed entering a series meant preparing for “negativity”.
Former Married at First Sight contestant Nic Jovanovic at a Movember Foundation breakfast for Testicular Cancer Awareness Month in April.
“You need to stay true to your values and beliefs,” he said. “I think enduring something like MAFS is huge and exhausting. “I understand how people can suffer negatively because you just never know how you will be portrayed and how others will see you. “It’s a very stressful time waiting for the reaction of the viewers.”
A real alternative to aged care
Jovanovic is now undergoing tests every six to 12 months to ensure he remains cancer free, while he’s also promoting positivity through charity work. Movember participants do not need to grow a moustache; Mo Bros and Mo Sistas can host an event this year to support the charity. Visit movember.com for more information. - Ben Murphy

news City’s “unprecedented” construction boom Newcastle’s “transformation is truly underway”, Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes says. More than $365 million in new development has been lodged with the City of Newcastle over the past three months. The council states this is a new record for investment in the city, with confidence in the thriving centre at an all-time high. “Newcastle is undergoing an unprecedented construction boom on the back of our progressive, future-focused vision for the city,” Cr Nelmes says. “The latest influx of investment is particularly exciting as it involves formerly underutilised sites now earmarked for development. “These plans will drive our local economy and contribute to
the vibrancy of our community for decades to come.” The latest $160 million development, from Wests Group Australia, at 309 King Street, includes two 14 storey mixed-use buildings. The two buildings will include an aged care facility, independent living units and general residential apartments, along with cafés, restaurants and a medical centre on the ground floor. Meanwhile, a development application has been lodged by Iris Capital to convert the former David Jones building on Hunter Street to a hotel, with plans to invest $18 million into the restoration. Century Venues also proposed a $11.5 million restoration of Newcastle’s iconic Victoria Theatre.
Plans to guide future land use New planning statements are set to define the future of Maitland and Lake Macquarie. The Local Strategic Planning Statements (LSPS) will guide the growth of the cities as they evolve over the next 20 years. Maitland City Council has just begun preparing a draft plan. Maitland Business Chamber President, Judy Brown, believes the statement needs to look at how Maitland’s water reservoirs and systems will be maintained because of the importance of this type of infrastructure during times of drought. “Our infrastructure is growing,” she says. “[The council] needs to plan for more people and look at what areas are growing.” The council has called on the community to provide feedback on its vision for land use planning
throughout this month. Feedback can be provided online, while there will also be popup stalls available. Visit Rutherford Marketplace from 14 to 20 November, or The Levee Shared Zone from 15 to 22 November. Meanwhile, the Lake Macquarie LSPS has already been drafted. The statement highlights the community’s vision for future land use; seven planning priorities that articulate the special characteristics of Lake Macquarie; strategies that summarise how they will deliver on these priorities; and key change and growth areas within the city. The statement is available for the public to view now. Visit maitlandyoursay.com. au before 30 November, or shape. lakemac.com.au/shaping-the-future by 29 November. - Elizabeth Symington

sport Championship winner visits hometown with crown Australian SailGP wing trimmer Kyle Langford has returned to his hometown of Lake Macquarie with the championship trophy as part of his team’s regional tour. Langford visited Coal Point Public School last week, surprising students with the 2.5-kilogram sterling silver and 24-carat gold plated SailGP trophy. He shared his successes and challenges as an athlete, as well as his journey to become a part of the Australian SailGP team. “It was surreal to be sharing my story with the young people in the hall where I also once sat as a student,” he said. “I hope that by sharing my own story as a local kid, who once sailed in Lake Macquarie and is now representing Australia in SailGP, I
will inspire some of the students to head down to their local sailing club and give the sport a try. “It is so important that we encourage the next generation to get involved in sailing and continue the strong legacy of sailing in Australia, which is what we hope to achieve from our regional trophy tour.” Langford and other members of the Australian team will take the SailGP trophy on the road over the next few weeks, visiting six regional communities in total, to inspire the next generation of young sailors and promote the high-adrenaline league. SailGP Season 1 featured five events around the globe – Sydney, San Francisco, New York, Cowes (UK) and Marseille (France) – and six national teams went head-tohead on the world’s fastest sail

racing boats. Just over a month ago, Langford and the Australia SailGP team earned the Season 1 title and a winner-takes-all prize of US $1 million with a victory over Japan in the championship final race in Marseille. Langford said he was grateful for all the support he received from the Lake Macquarie community. “I wanted to repay that support by taking the trophy home to celebrate with the community that
has played a crucial role in shaping who I am and that supported my childhood dreams of sailing professionally,” he said. The Lake Macquarie regional trophy tour marked the 112-day countdown to the Season 2 opener for SailGP, which takes place on the iconic Sydney Harbour on 28 and 29 February. Jason Hoffman’s first goal of the season was not enough as a late equaliser by Diego Castro denied the Jets their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon at McDonald Jones Stadium. Looking to bounce back from last week’s loss to Sydney, the Jets started brightly, and Abdiel Arroyo went close to opening the scoring in the eighth minute when his instinctive finish was somehow saved by Liam Reddy in the Perth goal. Newcastle goalkeeper Glen Moss was then called into action and made an excellent save with his feet to deny Chris Ikonomidis from close range in the 17th minute. However, it was the Jets who broke the deadlock when Hoffman put the home side in the lead just after the half-hour mark. Steve Ugarkovic received the ball 25 yards from goal and produced the perfect through ball to find the run of Hoffman, who blasted past Reddy and into the roof of the net. The Jets looked to double their advantage before halftime, with Nick Fitzgerald and Matt Millar both going close, but the score remained 1-0 as the two sides headed into the sheds.
The Jets once again started the second half brightly and looked certain to double their advantage in the 53rd minute, but Fitzgerald was first denied at point-blank range by Reddy, before Alex Grant produced some heroic goal-line defending to deny a second effort. In front of a parochial crowd of 8,308, the Jets fought tooth and nail to secure the three points but, with just four minutes remaining, Perth managed to level the scores. Following a frantic scramble in the Newcastle box, Castro bundled the ball home. The visitors were then reduced to 10-men when Grant received his second yellow card in the 87th minute. However, despite Newcastle’s best efforts, they were unable to find the winner in the dying moments as Perth clung on for a point. The draw left the Jets in second last position, having gained two points from four games played. Newcastle will travel to Melbourne in round six as they face off against newcomers Western United on Saturday 16 November at GMHBA Stadium. The clash kicks off at 7.30pm.

nw advertising feature ADAMSTOWN PUDDING KITCHEN The origins of the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen date back to 1971, when a church member turned to her grandmother’s pudding recipe to make a dessert for a church fundraiser, in thankfulness for her brother returning safely from the Vietnam War. Since then, Adamstown Pudding Kitchen has been producing superb gourmet puddings famous for their moist consistency and full flavour. Produced to an old family recipe in a modern commercial kitchen, Adamstown Pudding Kitchen uses only the finest natural Australian ingredients, where possible. As a result of our tradition for quality products, our puddings have been recognised as one of Australia’s finest gourmet puddings. The pudding kitchen is run by a group of loyal volunteers who ensure that, from June each year, the kitchen is ready to go to produce puddings ready for the seasonal rush at Christmas. Although many people affiliate Puddings with Christmas, the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen are trying to encourage people to look at Puddings as an all year-round dessert, especially in the cooler months. When you buy an Adamstown Pudding Kitchen, you are contributing to a good cause with profits from the produce going to support a range of welfare and community programs in Newcastle, Australia and overseas. These have previously included Lifeline, and overseas projects such as the provision of fresh water in Africa, school education in the Pacific, and community development in East Timor. The Adamstown Pudding Kitchen shop is now open for sales from Monday to Thursday, 9am to 4pm; Friday 9am to 2pm; and Saturday 9am to 1pm. Stroke survivors set to inspire in play A new play at Newcastle Theatre Company (NTC) will explore the critical moments after stroke recovery when survivors find the power to redefine themselves. In July, ABC’s Compass program aired an intimate and emotionally honest drama of 10 stroke survivors talking about their real-life experiences of living through a stroke and its aftermath. Their stories were woven into a script, helped along by Sydneybased director and playwright Linden Wilkinson, and My Mind’s I was born. The show was performed in January to new stroke inpatients going through rehabilitation. The ensemble’s intention with the play reflected their own stroke journeys: “If we had known then
what we know now, then it wouldn’t have been so bad.” Performing My Mind’s I was so satisfying that the stroke ensemble stayed together. Now, with the guidance and playmaking finesse of Newcastle’s Emma Wood, they have written Turning Points, which will premiere at NTC’s venue (90 De Vitre Street, Lambton) on Sunday 24 November at 2pm. It dances through the day to day challenges of living with brain injury – the funny and not so funny aspects of placing one foot in front of the other. Turning Points also features the reflections of loved ones who care for stroke survivors and face their own river of challenges.
Stu Chalmers, David Roskell, Camilla Mason, Zana Cohen, Noel Johnson, Emma Wood, Bev Hopper and Ken Mason.
Sadly, one of the original ensemble members, Brian Lowe, passed away in September. The ensemble pays a touching tribute to Brian during their performance. Following Turning Points, there will be a musical performance by the Conservatorium Brainwaves Choir, directed by Bernadette Matthias. The stroke ensemble project has been supported by Hunter Community Stroke Team; Hunter
New England Local Health District; Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI); the University of Newcastle; Conservatorium Brainwaves Choir; Newcastle Theatre Company; and Chris and Shirley Piggott. Turning Points will go for one hour. Adults are $10 and children will be free. Tickets are available at the door. Visit newcastletheatrecompany. com.au or phone 4952 4958.

Wild journey into strange and fascinating world Though his masterpieces were plentiful, Salvador Dali is better known for his antics, scandals and exceedingly high opinion of his own worth, than he is for his artistic genius. Dali sits alongside Picasso and Matisse as three of the greatest artists of the 20th Century. A wild, joyous journey into a strange and fascinating world, Dali: Hallucinogenic Toreador is the latest in an impressive list of original works from award-winning playwright Carl Caulfield, produced by Stray Dogs Theatre. Caulfield dives head-first into the controversial and surreal life of Dali to question the impact of art and fame. Caulfield says he was drawn to the fascinating life and work of Dali, admiring his art and the boldness and sheer theatricality of his imagination. “Dali’s work was first exhibited at the age of 14 in Figueres and by the age of 32, he was on the cover of Time magazine,” Caulfield said. “He worshipped money and made a lot of it, using his showman skills to sell products from perfume to jewellery.
“One of the first artists to manipulate the media for fame, he seemed to revel in playing the fool or the surrealist jester. “Yet in my research, I discovered this was an act, a kind of masquerade, to avoid the harsh realities he faced throughout his life. “This tension between the man and the mask had great dramatic potential and I relished the opportunity to go behind the mask. I’m delighted this full-length performance piece is now ready to be unleashed on an audience.” Caulfield takes on the title role, supported by Charlotte De Wit and Shane Bransdon in multiple roles as the people in Dali’s life who mattered most. The trio will be directed by Novocastrian powerhouse, Daniel Stoddart. This new work is coming to The Playhouse, Newcastle, from 8pm on Friday 15 November. Nightly performances follow on 16, 20 and 22 November, with the season concluding on Saturday 23 November with a matinee at 2pm and the fi nal performance at 8pm. New beginning for diabetes foundation Education, raising awareness and funding research: it’s all been part of a foundation’s work to support diabetes over the years. Despite its success, Lions District
201N3 Diabetes Foundation, which has been serving the wider Hunter Region since 1992, voted for a namechange in August to broaden its scope of support and attract financial
help on a larger scale. Now called Lions Australia Diabetes Foundation, it is based in Newcastle and aims to extend its services throughout the nation, as well as Papua New Guinea and Norfolk Island. With World Diabetes Day today (Thursday 14 November), the foundation’s Public Relations Officer, Noelene Heggart, said its principal goals remained the same. “The primary objective of the foundation is to provide seed funding for research grants and equipment to better treat both type one and type two diabetes in children and adults of any age,” she said. “Another form of diabetes is gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy. “It usually ceases after birth, but some mothers’ glucose levels can still remain at a high level afterwards.” According to Diabetes Australia, all three types of diabetes are increasing in prevalence.
Type one, in which the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, accounts for 10% of all diabetes. Type two, which sits at 85%, is a progressive condition where the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin or gradually loses the capacity to produce enough insulin in the pancreas. Gestational diabetes in pregnancy has also been on the rise. This year’s theme for World Diabetes Day is Family and Diabetes. The International Diabetes Foundation is raising awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the family and support network of those affected. It is also promoting the role of family in the management, care, prevention, and education of diabetes. Email diabetes@ozemail.com.au or visit lionsclubs.org.au/members/ diabetes-foundation if you would like more information.

The grey water debate The terminology ‘grey water’ means water from washing machines, sinks, showers and bathtubs. Should you use it? The best advice I can offer with reference to using grey water is to check with your local council and the state environmental health department. Councils once wouldn’t even consider the idea of water storage tanks as they were considered a health hazard. What has changed? Firstly, the drought conditions, which are prevailing throughout the state. Some areas of
the Hunter aren’t affected, but certainly water storage is dropping and then there is the high cost of water rates. Let’s look at grey water. During an ongoing drought some years ago, I advocated washing machines being pumped onto lawns. Use an eco-friendly detergent which should be low in phosphorus and salt and should have a neutral pH. Use grey water only during long periods of dry weather. Never use any water in which clothing containing contaminants have been washed. Wash your hands thoroughly after digging in soil that had been irrigated with grey water. Grey water shouldn’t be used on vegetables or fruit trees; never let children play in soil that has been wet with grey water. Untreated grey water, because it comes from laundries and bathrooms, is contaminated with bacteria found in fats, oils, greases, food particles, hair, mucous, traces of urine, and faecal matter. There are obvious risks to health and the environment attached to the use of grey water. Although it is legal throughout Australia to use

grey water, check with your council regarding its requirements. My concerns over long-term use of grey water in the garden start with detergent build up in the soil. How about earthworms? Will they like a daily bath in grey water?
This week • Deadhead roses damaged by windy weather - this will encourage new blooms. A handful of Sudden Impact will encourage new buds. • Keep passionfruit well mulched to avoid fruit drop. • Watch for powdery mildew on vegetables and roses. Spray with copper oxychloride.

Zone your garden Establishing different zones adds visual interest to any outdoor design and maximises functionality. Using timber creatively can include a deck which has multiple levels or platforms to define areas with different functions. Timber time Timber is increasingly used for creating stunning outdoor design features, following a trend for natural finishes, raw materials and mixed textures. Wood structures generate a sense of warmth and connect with their natural surroundings. With its neutral palette, timber also harmonises with other building materials, such as brick or concrete, and can be used for a multitude of outdoor applications that are both stylish and practical. that homeowners can use timber to create interesting landscaping features to suit any outdoor space.
areas with limited space, built-in bench seating is a great way of providing ample room for visitors whilst creating a visual focal point.
Build a timber pergola Pergolas are great for adding beauty and functionality to an outdoor space. A thoughtfully designed pergola will define an outdoor living area with instant character and wow-factor. Australian hardwood species are extremely durable and can withstand harsh weather conditions, including rain, humidity, wind, salt and intense heat.
Install a timber feature wall Spruce up a garden or courtyard without renovating the entire space by adding a timber feature wall. This is a great way to inject natural elements into the backyard, and a simple way to warm up a concrete or rendered space. It can also soften hardscapes where planting or foliage may not allow for a variety

Time is right for Newcastle downsizers With the national property market showing signs of a healthy recovery, Newcastle downsizers are tipped to cash in on their home equity. As recently reported by the CoreLogic Home Values Index, Sydney property prices surged to 2.3 percent last month – the largest monthly gain in 10 years. Along with the recent drops to cash rates, loosened lending conditions and First Home Owners Grant schemes, new buyers are being encouraged into the market. Latitude One Project Sales Manager, Sheree Richardson said many homeowners deferred downsizing while waiting for their property value to peak or until they found their next place to move to. “Ingenia Lifestyle has a favourable land lease model where residents purchase their home and lease the land, giving over 55s an affordable way to own a new home and be fi nancially independent.

“We are now seeing significant demand from these keen downsizers who no longer want to wait and want to start living a better life sooner,” Sheree said. Latitude One’s new residents, Cheryl and George Perridge made the move in June to free up some equity from their large family home, with the land lease model protecting their financial security and independence. “We had lived in our old home for 39 years and it became too much for us. There was so much upkeep involved in having an older, larger home. “But we still wanted our own space - a free standing home, a fence and space for our caravan. “Ingenia Lifestyle offered a simple and transparent model to understand and fantastic features and facilities that come with a lifestyle community,” Cheryl said. Land lease living is an increasingly popular option for the independent and active over 55s, improving their lifestyle while connecting with other residents.
“We now have more time to do what we actually want to do and we can come and go as we please. “The social aspect of living in a lifestyle community was really important to us and now we get to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, the clubhouse and be surrounded by like-minded people,” Cheryl said.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Star Wars: Episode VI Friday, NBN, 8.30pm, M (2017)
Starring baby-faced Tom Holland (pictured) as the titular hero, we jump in after the events of Captain America: Civil War as Peter juggles schoolwork, friends and teenage issues while crafting his crime-fighting skills. Under the eyes of Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), Peter has a chance to prove himself when villain Vulture (Michael Keaton) arrives. Homecoming is a breezy, refreshing return to fun.
Friday
Friday, 9GO!, 9.20pm, PG (1983)
The third and chronologically final film of the Star Wars series picks up where Empire’s classic cliffhanger ending left off: Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is reeling from the discovery of his true heritage; Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is busy chillin’ with the grotesque Jabba the Hutt, and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher, pictured with Hamill) tries her hand at undercover work.

Dunkirk Tuesday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2017)
Arguably cinema’s most popular auteur director of this century so far, Christopher Nolan has engaged audiences with both arthouse-straddling masterpieces (Memento) and mind-bending sci-fi blockbusters (Inception). With Dunkirk, the British director turns his attention to the eponymous battle fought during the second World War. After an evacuation mission is launched to rescue Allied troops who are stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk, they fall under fierce attack from German forces. With spectacular sound editing (there is little dialogue) and a music score from the legendary Hans Zimmer, Dunkirk is an extraordinary story of courage.

Shailene will want to become a better person generally and she will indeed develop increased self-awareness and self-empowerment over the next 12 months. There will be a strong Sagittarius element to her year ahead and this is a sign well known for travel and having an adventurous streak. So, as Sagittarius’s ruling planet Jupiter conveys its energies to her, Shailene might find her focus is on overseas journeys and exploring distant lands.

Keep your communications with loved ones positive and let go of any past resentments. You may be unhappy in a relationship and not know why? Perhaps you are dreaming of a past lover or fantasising about someone you cannot have. Such distortions cloud your appreciation of reality.
Your creative side will come out this month in your professional life. Whether you’ve been thinking of launching a new business or pitching new ideas at work, your efforts will pay off in coming months. On the love front, you’ll start to find the stability you’ve been searching for.

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio indicates that you may be feeling exhausted, making it difficult to see life objectively. On the relationship front, you are unable to decide what to do next. Your lover may press for commitment or ask how you feel but you’re confused right now.

Be sure to pay close attention to your relationships and give them the nurturing they need. With Mercury retrograde, it represents a serious challenge. You’re asked to consider murky issues of power, manipulation and control that could surface as a sense of anger or fear which drives you on.
There will be some big decisions to make this month in your personal and professional life. Take opportunities that will benefit you, but be mindful that some people may waste your time. Love is in the air and you’ll find a connection with someone in an unexpected place.

My favourite things GIVING BACK There is nothing more rewarding than being part of a community that makes a difference. I’m surrounded daily by people who make a difference in the lives of those fighting melanoma and I’m passionate about helping to win that fight.
GRATITUDE I am grateful every day for all the blessings I have in my life. Especially for my family and friends, many who have become family, even though they wear Crocs and crochet.
Claudia Tolhurst HUNTER MELANOMA FOUNDATION EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Witty, vibrant, passionate and keen to get things done is how you would describe Claudia Tolhurst. Claudia is the new Executive Officer of the Hunter Melanoma Foundation (HMF). With dozens of clever and creative ideas up her sleeve, Claudia’s main mission is to reduce the incidence of melanoma in the Hunter. “One person dies every five hours in Australia from melanoma and that’s too many,” she says. “While we all know slip, slop, slap, many of us aren’t diligent protecting our skin or, importantly, getting our skin checked.” With the Skin Cancer Action Week launching on 17 November, Claudia is urging readers to visit HMF social media sites during the week. “This year we’re trying to get the Check and Protect message out to young adults because melanoma kills more young Australians than any other cancer,” she says. “So, please like, share and comment on our posts to spread the Check and Protect message with friends and loved ones.” 70
LOCAL THEATRE NETBALL I grew up in Cardiff and played netball for both Cardiff South (Ulinga) and Cardiff in my youth. In 2013, I returned to Cardiff to register my daughters in the sport I love, and have been coaching, mentoring, playing and umpiring there ever since.
I have always loved musical theatre and dabbled in it a little in high school. That love was reignited in the last 10 years when my nephew became involved in local theatre. We have some amazing talent in the Hunter and it often overwhelms me.
TRIATHLON My husband Mick is an Ironman Triathlete and I love nothing more than watching him race around the course. I’m always amazed and inspired by his strength and resilience and the example he sets for our daughters Luci and Maddi.
