This week... From the editor It was pleasing to hear of Veteran Sport Australia’s bid to encourage more of our nation’s veterans to get active. The official launch of the initiative took place at Lake Mac parkrun in Booragul amid Veterans Health Week (26 October to 3 November). According to a study from 2015, about 46% of Australian Defence Force members who had transitioned from fulltime service over the past five years met 12-month diagnostic criteria for a mental health disorder. So, it’s appropriate that this year’s theme for Veterans Health Week is mental wellness. You can read more about Veteran Sport Australia’s important work on page 20. On a lighter note, here’s a classic case of lying down on the job! Our very talented photographer, Peter, will stop at nothing to get the best snaps. While I made a beeline for the shade during that heatwave late last week, he showed plenty of dedication to take up this position in the middle of a road in Carrington as part of our cover shoot. -Ben Murphy

news Charity marks 30-year milestone Victims of Crime Assistance League (VOCAL) is celebrating its 30th year of validating, honouring and empowering victims of crime. The organisation started out in 1989 when Dawn and Barry Gilbert rallied more than 600 people who were outraged by their daughter Tracey’s murder and the inadequacies that existed within the criminal justice system in supporting victims of crime. “I was 16 when I lost my sister; I was doing my HSC, I had just started Year 11, and my mum was determined to – out of losing Tracey – help people,” daughter Lynda Gilbert said. “There was nothing, there was nobody, you just had to go through it all on your own. “Mum didn’t want other families to have to go through that, it was too much.” So, in the dining room of their house, VOCAL began. The organisation understands that crime impacts people in different ways, and it exists to support and empower victims of any crime, from murder right down to schoolyard bullying. “When [victims have] the right support, they

feel empowered and they can move forward and do great things despite what they have experienced,” VOCAL chief executive Kerrie Thompson said. VOCAL also lobbies the government in a bid to showcase how legislation and legal procedures impact upon victims. “We feel very privileged because we get to share the real stories of our clients with people who make laws,” Ms Thompson added. “They get to hear firsthand how their policies and procedures are impacting.” The organisation has instigated important changes over the last three decades. It influenced the government to make alterations to policy and legislation; was instrumental in the introduction of victim impact statements in the criminal justice system; and contributed to the recent changes in sexual abuse laws. Sadly, VOCAL suffered a tragic loss last year, losing founder Dawn Gilbert, but it is moving forward for her and will continue to fight her fight.

news Alf hailed for “phenomenal” service Alf Carpenter was forced to dive into the South Pacific to evade a Japanese attack on his flotilla in World War II. Survival was his only thought. However, as he swam in the narrow Buka Passage, which lies east of present-day Papua New Guinea, a fellow digger struck up a conversation. “We got shot up waiting to be picked up,” Mr Carpenter told Newcastle Weekly. “He turned to me and said: ‘If we get over this, we’ll go into business together.’” When the war ended, that same digger, who was a retail worker from Wallsend, sent a telegram to Mr Carpenter, encouraging him to move from Wagga Wagga and set up a general store in Warners Bay. The two men went on to operate the business together for years. During this time, Mr Carpenter noticed a need for a Justice of the Peace (JP) and, in 1968, he was officially appointed. “A lot of people would come into the store and want someone to witness them signing their papers for the pension and whatnot,” he said.

“So that’s how I became a JP.” Mr Carpenter has now been acknowledged for 50 years’ service as a JP during a function at Parliament House, Sydney, this month. The 102-year-old was joined by more than 100 fellow JPs, as well as Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp. Mr Crakanthorp said it was an honour to attend the function. He congratulated Mr Carpenter for his “phenomenal record of service” for Newcastle and Australia. “He came back from the war and kept giving, and to think that Alf was in his ‘50s when he became a Justice of the Peace and has managed to notch up 50 years of service is absolutely incredible,” Mr Crakanthorp said. “I can’t even imagine just how many people he has helped over the years, but his contribution to our city is so valued.” During World War II, Mr Carpenter fought in Europe and the Middle East, before being stationed in the Pacific towards the end of the war. He was honoured by the Greek government in

news Hotel mogul’s key projects in region The heritage-listed former Newcastle Post Office will soon be brought back to life. After purchasing the property in 2018, surgeon and hotel mogul Dr Jerry Schwartz is set to revitalise the site. He hopes it can reopen early next year. The first hurdle has been passed, with the removal of asbestos almost complete. However, the next big hurdle, according to Dr Schwartz, is gaining development approval from the City of Newcastle. Dr Schwartz and his team are working through the long process. He hopes the City “will be happy” with what they have planned. “I am as frustrated as anyone else,” he said. “I am keen to get things moving.” The basement will become the Aboriginal cultural centre, which Dr Schwartz promised to the Awabakal people. The top floor is set to transform into a conference centre for events, while the first floor will include a series of shops. Dr Schwartz said the cultural centre was

the first part of the renovations they wanted to address because the top floors would be a big restoration project. Apart from the post office, Dr Schwartz has also launched another project at Lovedale in the Hunter Valley. He will open a five-megawatt solar farm, consisting of over 13,000 panels, next month. The $8.5 million investment has a five-year payback period and will deliver a C02 reduction of more than seven million kilograms per annum. After one year of operation, Dr Schwartz will be able to use the solar farm to power his hotel, the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley. “After five years, I’ll get free power,” Dr Schwartz said. “It will make the hotels really sustainable.” He plans to own and create more solar farms to power his hotels and properties in the future. He said these farms were about “maintaining our earth”, looking at the big picture, and cost effectiveness. “One has to be able to find mechanisms to help cost,” he said.

Dr Jerry Schwartz will open a five-megawatt solar farm in the Hunter Valley, while he is also working on the heritage-listed former Newcastle Post Office.

The solar farm will highlight the importance of renewable energy, while Dr Schwartz also hopes to attract more tourists to the Hunter Region. “My whole mantra is to help tourism,” he said. - Elizabeth Symington

It has been a decade since the redevelopment of the Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG), and Maitland City Council is looking to the future. The council has been collecting community feedback to help shape the gallery into 2025 and beyond. In targeting key groups such as young people, people with disability, Aboriginal people and people from cultural and linguistically diverse communities, the council will be looking to identify the barriers to participation, visitation and access to the gallery, as well as its programs and services. “We want to know what the Maitland community wants and needs from their gallery – we want to understand how we can better serve our community,” Gallery Coordinator Kattie Bugeja said.

A survey, titled Maitland 20202025, will identify the community’s aspirations for the gallery, and also provide an insight into why some people do not visit the gallery. news Garden honours Greta Migrant Camp Hunter Multicultural Communities (HMC) Vice President Janina Sulikowski was three years old when she migrated to Australia. Her family had plans to go to Argentina, a place they believed to be full of dreams. However, when her mother fell ill, they were not allowed to get on to the ship and waited for the next one, which was travelling to Australia. They then landed at the Greta Migrant Camp. Between 1949 and 1960, the camp housed more than 100,000 migrants from over 17 countries, including Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Poland, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Germany and Russia. Now, a Greta Memorial Garden has been unveiled at HMC’s headquarters in Waratah as the 70th anniversary of the camp approaches. Ms Sulikowski says the memorial garden is “very important” to the community because it honours all they went through. “It actually has bricks from Greta there plus the rose, the Greta rose that came out on the first ship, the Fairsea on July 6, 1949,” she says. “Greta camp is such an important place for the

migrant community because most of them started life there. “They came from war-torn Europe to a new place to start a new life.” Ms Sulikowski adds the “first migrants made such an impact on our development here in the Hunter”. She believes it is important to acknowledge this impact and to celebrate all the cultures within the country. The memorial garden was constructed using bricks from the Greta Migrant Camp site and included two benches. One is dedicated to Vitaly Lupish, one of the first residents at the camp, while the other recognises HMC President Robert Bell for his services to the organisation and the community. The garden was opened by Newcastle federal MP Sharon Claydon and Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes. Both said it was a privilege to be there to honour the migrant camp, as well as Mr Lupish and Mr Bell. With the future of the migrant camp site up

The University of Newcastle plans to introduce a new attendance requirement for first year students from next year. Under the rule, students will need to attend 80% of their tutorials and those who do not meet this requirement will not be eligible to sit exams. Current attendance requirements range from zero to 100%. The university hopes the rule, which is set to be recorded via mobile phone software, will increase campus activity and student results. Online teaching and a lack of parking at the university’s Callaghan campus have been cited as contributing factors behind a reported drop in student attendance. The plan has been met with a mixed response so far, with some students claiming it will impact on other commitments.

Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison has called on the state government to provide safe and habitable public housing to its tenants. Ms Harrison says her office has experienced a spike in social housing complaints from constituents waiting for simple maintenance on their homes. “Complaints have included mould, bird lice, sewer overflows, termite infestations and a lack of bathroom modifications for people with disabilities,” she says. Ms Harrison believes the government needs to address the maintenance complaints and fix the issues that have risen. She claims public housing tenants are being treated as “second class citizens”, with rampant outsourcing and privatisation two key contributors to the problem.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes believes more state government-imposed waste levy funds need to be made available to the City of Newcastle to drive efficiency and innovation. According to the City, the government collects about $800 million from councils as part of the waste levy each year. Less than a third of that money is spent on programs to reduce waste. “For more than a decade, we’ve been crying out to get a bigger piece of the pie so local waste can be managed locally,” Cr Nelmes says. “It’s clear this would allow us to achieve much better environmental outcomes.” Cr Nelmes adds the levy has increased more than 300% in 11 years, going from $10.4 million in 2008/09 to $32.6 million in 2018/19.

Lake Macquarie City Council is developing a Youth Strategy that aims to activate and celebrate the next generation. As part of the development, the council has launched a survey to provide young people with an opportunity to share the issues that are most important to them. According to census data, almost one-third of Lake Macquarie’s 205,000 population is under the age of 25. “The new Youth Strategy is about our young people, so it’s only right that we speak directly to them in putting it together,” the council’s Manager of Community Partnerships, Andrew Bryant, says. Ms Fela was diagnosed with Stargardts disease at the age of 27 after her vision progressively deteriorated. Stargardts disease is a genetic eye disorder that affects the retina, causing loss of vision in early life. Ms Fela says it has made “things a bit tricky”, but she hasn’t let it stop her from living. Since the diagnosis, Ms Fela has gone on to become a hippy; live on a share farm; and join in the sport of dragon boat racing. She is also a member of the Achilles Hunter Central Coast Club. The club facilitates training and participation in running and walking events within a social environment, where people with disabilities can strive to achieve life-changing goals.

“As I got older, I wanted to get fit, so I joined the Achilles club and haven’t looked back,” Ms Fela says. Achilles launched earlier this year in Newcastle, the Hunter, and the Central Coast, but has recently merged to become the one club, Achilles Hunter Central Coast. Ms Fela says that it creates an inclusive and comfortable environment. “It’s for anyone with a disability – you can run or walk with confidence,” she says. “Our running guides, sometimes we call them pilots, make you feel very comfortable. “The guides are there for you, you don’t feel awkward asking for help.” Through the Achilles club, Ms Fela has achieved great things, competing in marathons, half marathons and other events in

the region. She even had the opportunity to run in the New York Marathon, but fell ill and could not make the trip over there. Running and the Achilles club became a family affair. Ms Fela’s sister completed her first ever fun run with her and then went on to become her running guide. Being blind or vision impaired

news Veterans urged to get active Veteran Sport Australia has launched an initiative that encourages veterans from across the country to get active at their local parkrun in support of mental health. The official launch took place at Lake Mac parkrun in Booragul on Saturday. Participants were joined by Lake Macquarie Independent MP Greg Piper, Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser, and Veteran Sport Australia Engagement Specialist Rachel Kerrigan as they completed the free five-kilometre community activity. The initiative marked the first day of Veterans Health Week, an event organised by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. This year’s theme is mental wellness. Veteran Sport Australia General Manager Michael Hartung said

cover story Hometown driver revved up for debut in Newcastle 500 Cody McKay once thought the chance to race in Newcastle was the stuff of dreams. But the 31-year-old, who has been involved in motorsport since the age of 16, will line-up for his debut at this year’s Newcastle 500 as part of the Aussie Racing Cars series. McKay, who is Newcastle born and raised, says he’s thrilled to be racing on the very streets he grew up learning to drive on. “It means the world to me,” he says. “It’s something that I thought would never happen, and then they brought the race here. “I’ve been racing for years, but nothing comes close to the excitement of racing on a track in your hometown.”

Growing up, McKay was an active member of the Newcastle Kart Racing Club, where he honed his skills. In recent years, he has made the move from karts to cars, taking a seat behind the wheel of Formula Fords, Production Cars, BMW E36 series, and Legend Cars. The Newcastle 500, which takes place from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 November, will mark his first time behind the wheel of an Aussie Racing Car. The purpose-built, 500-kilogram powerhouse of steel runs roughly half the size of a full-sized car and is capable of speeds of more than 230 kilometres per hour. “It’s more a miniature level of racing but, because they are so small, they provide a lot more

International flights set for take-off The countdown to Newcastle Airport’s international flights to Auckland is on. In July, Newcastle Airport and Virgin Australia announced a threeyear partnership to continue flying direct service between the Hunter and Auckland, New Zealand. The announcement came after the airport successfully launched its first international route in 16

years over the summer months in November 2018. Newcastle Airport Chief Executive Peter Cock said he was buoyed by the public’s response and the way staff had managed the new international capacity. “In what is a great sign of confidence in the region, we have formalised an agreement to continue connecting these two

harbour cities for at least the next three years,” he said. “On the back of the successes of last year, we are thrilled to provide some clarity and certainty around the longevity of these flights, which cement us as an international airport. “The first season was a real success, delivering an estimated $5.4 million in economic benefit into our region. “Importantly, 38% of holiday travellers were visiting the Hunter for the first time, which indicates this direct service stimulated new demand. “The service also provided

thousands of locals with the opportunity to visit Auckland for the first time. “In fact, 30% of Australian leisure travellers made their inaugural visit to the New Zealand city via this direct service.” Virgin Australia will operate three return services per week during the peak holiday period from 21 November 2019 to 16 February 2020, with potential to grow over subsequent years. This three-hour flight departs Newcastle every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 7:30pm. Flights between Newcastle and Auckland are on sale now.

Festival to light up gaol Maitland Gaol will come alive with music, food and beer this weekend. Newcastle’s soul-tronic duo, Boo Seeka will headline the annual Bitter & Twisted Boutique Beer Festival on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November. After a year of non-stop touring and the release of a new single, band members Ben Gumbleton and Michael May’s smooth vocals, electro sounds, and hip-hop grooves are sure to be a hit. Gumbleton describes the band’s sound as having a “summer vibe” and “all about feeling good and being happy”. “We’re honoured to headline Saturday; it’ll be amazing to be a part of the atmosphere,” Gumbleton says. Australian band Custard will also take the stage on Sunday, bringing with them a collection of memorable singles. Maitland City Council’s Events

Officer, Beth Anastasiou, says organisers are thrilled with the festival’s line-up. “We’ve got an awesome mix of genres, with local and interstate acts,” she says. Bullhorn, The Long Johns, Kookshill and Rubix Cuba round out the line up on Saturday, and The Hi-Boys, Lili Crane and Burger Joint will take to the stage on Sunday. There will be several brewers at the festival, and food choices from around the globe will be available to accompany the beverages. Other entertainment will include a disco, drag queen bingo and a smaller, twisted stage where local acts will perform, including Tantrum Youth Arts. “Come along, let’s have an amazing time,” Gumbleton adds. ‘Tis the season for a colourful display Tomorrow is the first day of November – it’s still spring, but we have already experienced heat and hot winds and very little rain. This time of year should be pleasant in the garden as summer shrubs and roses begin to bloom, which should appease the passing of pansies and the disappointment felt when spring bulbs begin yellowing and dying off. However, last weekend’s heat and drying winds left many gardeners worrying about tomatoes being burnt by the hot wind and azaleas getting burnt when normally they keep flowering through spring. If azaleas and daisies are covered in brown and half dead blooms and clivias and camellias have finished flowering, then camellias, particularly, should have been fed with cow manure and mulched with peat moss.

Daisies could be cut back lightly and fed with an all-purpose foliant fertiliser such as Flourish to encourage new blooms. Presently we need to be conscious of current water restrictions which still allow us to apply water in the morning and afternoon but, more importantly, mulch the garden with sugar cane, also applying Saturaid and water crystals to store the precious water applied to the gardens and lawns. Agapanthus are budding to burst into colour for Christmas. Hopefully they were fed with cow manure at the beginning of spring – keep a watchful eye out for mealy bug, which can often be hidden deep down in the plant’s base. Gardenias and hibiscus will both benefit from an application of cow manure – gardenias setting buds and

displaying yellowing leaves can be lacking water or may need fertilising with cow manure or magnesium. Have you checked your indoor plants? Repot, if needed, turn over the topsoil that has become hard and crusty, top up with new potting mix or peat moss, fertilise with Green Flourish. Christmas is looming; fertilise beds with cow manure, wait one week and plant out colourful annuals. If you live in an apartment or villa, pot up bowls of annuals, petunias, begonias or lobelia – always use a premium potting mix and apply Flourish for flowering each week to give a brilliant colourful display for the festive season.

The 2019 Newcastle 500, which takes place from 22 to 24 November, will mark his Aussie Racing Cars debut. However, Cody boasts a background of more than 15 years’ experience in a range of other motorsport categories. Throughout the years, he’s driven in everything from karts at the Newcastle Kart Racing Club to Legend Cars at Speedway. Cody also has experience racing and testing in Formula Fords and Production Cars. No matter what he is racing, Cody has proven himself to be consistent, versatile and aggressive on the track.
