This week... From the editor Welcome to Newcastle Weekly’s special 2019 NSW state election edition. Your vote is a powerful thing and we want to help you use it wisely. To that end, we’ve allowed all Hunter Region candidates the opportunity to have their say on their top three priorities for each electorate. Our aim is that, by the time you walk into a polling booth on Saturday 23 March, each candidate’s name will mean more to you than ink on a ballot paper. You will have a better understanding of what each candidate stands for, and why they deserve your vote. Of course, some see compulsory voting as more of a burden than a privilege. If that’s you, I hope our election guide can change your mind by helping you to identify what issues resonate with you the most. At the very least, the upcoming election is a chance to snaffle a democracy sausage [democracysausage.org] – what’s more patriotic than that? You’ll find NW’s election coverage on pages 4-14. To help you decide how to cast your ELECTION vote in the 2019 NSW state election on Saturday 23 March, Newcastle Weekly asks candidates in each Hunter electorate to share their top three priorities for the region.
Sean Bremner-Young, Animal Justice Party Sean is a local businessman in Newcastle supplying plantbased muffins to local cafés and restaurants. Sean will advocate for the freedom of egg-laying hens from cruel battery cages, a ban on greyhound racing, and protection of native forests from logging, among other things. Sean will make sure animals are well represented in parliament. Sean will fight for justice for animals. Sean will be a powerful voice in parliament against systematic animal cruelty.
Tim Crakanthorp, Labor (incumbent) Investing in our local schools by air-conditioning classrooms and addressing maintenance backlogs and properly resourcing our hospitals by mandating nurse-to-patient ratios instead of splurging $2.2 billion knocking down and rebuilding Sydney stadiums; continuing to work towards the diversification of the Port of Newcastle to supercharge the local economy and deliver jobs; and undertaking a full and transparent review of the Newcastle bus network and restore essential bus services, which have been cut by the Liberals.

WALLSEND Sinead Francis-Coan, Greens This election, I want everyone in Wallsend to have a home – one they can afford instead of crippling rent and overwhelming mortgage repayments. The Greens’ Universal Housing plan can do just that. I will champion sustainable
If I am fortunate enough to be returned to parliament by the people of Wallsend, my major focuses will be on road congestion, public transport and police. Major infrastructure works like the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange and stage five of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass will alleviate congestion. A full review of Newcastle Buses will address the problems that have plagued the system for almost two years now. More police officers and resources will keep Wallsend businesses and residents feeling safe.
Nicholas Trappett, Liberal Delivering upgrades to John Hunter Hospital, including an increase in capacity; seeing the completion of stage five of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass; and wiping the school maintenance backlog in the electorate to zero.
CHARLESTOWN Jennifer Barrie, Liberal Revamping the facilities for local schools, such as better playground equipment for Windale Public School and clearing the maintenance backlog; boosting the health workforce and services at John Hunter Hospital to make sure that the local ageing population has access to health services they need; and mental health assistance for local young people.
Therese Doyle, Greens Therese stands for a decisive shift in government priority away from serving private interests towards putting public services back into public hands. Charlestown deserves much better public education, health and especially decent housing. Charlestown residents deserve publicly-owned, efficient and reliable public transport. Proper regulation of developments that are sympathetic in scale and design with Charlestown’s existing environment and neighbourhoods. Therese strongly advocates for meaningful community consultation and engagement in all decisions about new development.
Jodie Harrison, Labor (incumbent) I am proud to be recontesting the seat of Charlestown. Over the last four years I have been lobbying the government on three key issues: our buses, our schools, and Hillsborough Road. A Labor government will: review our bus routes and timetables; air-condition all classrooms, replace demountables with permanent classrooms and reduce the
maintenance backlog; repair and upgrade roads in Lake Macquarie; and provide nurse-to-patient ratios at every public hospital to ensure a high standard of care.
Richard Turner, Animal Justice Party Richard has lived in Charlestown for more than a decade. He is passionate about dog protection and will fight for mandatory release of animals from research facilities. He will also fight to ban cruel 1080 poison used to bait wild dogs. Richard will fight to make sure Animal Justice Party’s core values – kindness, equality, rationality and non-violence – are a part of our political system. He will advocate for an independent office of animal protection and establish an enquiry into kangaroo slaughter, banning puppy farms and animals used in circuses.
SWANSEA Dean Bowman, Liberal Making sure there’s a strong local police presence to keep the community safe; enhancing the local resources for Belmont Hospital and ensuring the region gets its fair share of palliative care nurses; as well as addressing youth unemployment in the region and working with support services to help vulnerable and troubled teens.
Yasmin Catley, Labor (incumbent) Transport: The privatised transport network has seen cut services, worsened connectivity and increased journey times. NSW Labor will instruct Keolis Downer to review the network, with the view to restoring
essential services. Education: NSW Labor will make TAFE free for 600,000 students, replace demountables with permanent classrooms and make public transport free for all kids. Health: NSW Labor will hire 5,500 additional nurses and midwives, introduce minimum nurse-to-patient ratios to improve patient care and provide more security at hospitals.
Julia Riseley, Animal Justice Party Julia has lived in Swansea for more than two decades. She is dedicated to addressing humane treatment of farmed animals by pushing for the mandatory installation of CCTV cameras in all abattoirs and intensive farms. She will help ban puppy farms and sales of animals in pet stores. She will see to the banning of battery hen cages, animals in circuses and setting up an independent animal protection office.
Doug Williamson, Greens Protect our offshore fishing grounds and coastal environments by stopping seismic testing and drilling for gas and oil off our coast; tackle climate change and create local jobs by rapidly transitioning to publicly-owned renewable energy; provide world-class, free public education from early childhood to university and TAFE, which includes lobbying for the immediate reopening of Belmont TAFE. By representing our community’s values in parliament and holding old parties to account, together we can create a fairer and cleaner future for all. Continued on page 8.

LAKE MACQUARIE Kim Grierson, Greens Power NSW: build a 100% renewable, publicly-owned electricity generator to sell electricity at cost. 1 GW per year will cost less than 1% of the NSW budget. Action on climate change and to protect our endangered species. Close coal clunkers at Vales Point and Eraring Power Stations, remediate sites to end long-term health problems for locals, and transition workers.
Lindsay Paterson, Liberal Delivering the major upgrades planned for Wangi Wangi and Speers Point public schools; more support services in youth mental health as well as

improved access to aged and palliative care; and supporting local small business by fighting Labor’s proposed increases in payroll tax.
Greg Piper, Independent (incumbent) The state government must invest in the next stage of the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange at Glendale, along with commuter parking stations at Cardiff, Morisset and Fassifern. It also needs to release the long-awaited Hillsborough Road masterplan and fund the required works, particularly at the Crockett Street intersection. I’m also prioritising the extension of palliative care and cancer treatment services into all of Lake Macquarie, and for much-needed school upgrades and the 24/7 operation of Morisset Police Station.
Jo Smith, Labor I believe the role of a politician is to make people’s lives better. As a lifelong local, I know that Lake Macquarie is one of the best places in Australia to live, work, retire or raise a family. My priorities are: education, including air-conditioners in every classroom and free TAFE; improving public transport and traffic congestion; and stopping the current sell-off of public assets and possible future sell-offs, such as Morisset Hospital. Solutions to these problems will ease the cost of living and create jobs.
Laurence Taranto, Animal Justice Party Laurence has lived in Lake Macquarie for most of his life. Laurence will fight for protecting native forests from logging to

MAITLAND Jenny Aitchison, Labor (incumbent) We are the fastestgrowing community outside of Sydney and we need Labor’s new $470 million fully public hospital, new primary school and new high school. We have too many
demountables and we need air-conditioning in all our classrooms. I will continue to fight for better public transport and to fight our road congestion in Maitland. I am very proud of our $32 million commitment to fix our poor and very poor roads in Maitland.
John Brown, Greens The number one challenge facing Maitland is climate change. We need to act on restoring our wetlands and protecting our natural bushland from the everincreasing over-development of our city. A job, especially for our young people, is also crucial. Boosting our renewable energy sector will provide thousands of jobs, and this transition from coal can be supported by the Greens’ plan for free TAFE and university courses. Traffic chaos on our roads can be relieved with better public transport.
Sally Halliday, Liberal Developing a medical precinct around the new Maitland Hospital; upgrading the Bolwarra Public School and helping to roll out air-conditioning across local schools; and working with local government to help obtain the maximum funds for the region under the NSW Liberals and Nationals $1 billion statewide grants program to fix local roads and bridges.

UPPER HUNTER Melanie Dagg, Country Labor The Nationals are failing our regions, but I will put this community first. I will ensure the Upper Hunter gets its fair share of funding for schools and hospitals, including mandating one-to-three nurse-to-patient ratios. After years of the Nationals over-promising and under-delivering, Labor will prioritise infrastructure, including the $600-plus million we have committed in partnership with Federal Labor to build the Muswellbrook and Singleton bypasses. Tributes have flowed for a man fondly known as Mr Maitland. Milton Morris AO died peacefully last week at the age of 94. Born in Mayfield in 1924, Mr Morris was educated at Wickham Public School and Newcastle Junior Boys’ High. He went on to serve as the Member for Maitland between 1956 and 1980. During this time, he was also the state’s longest-serving Minister for Transport, taking on the role from 1965 to 1975. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said his road safety reforms saved thousands of lives. “As Minister for Transport, Mr Morris was instrumental in the introduction of road safety initiatives we take for granted today, such as compulsory seatbelts and breathalysers,” she said. “Road safety measures introduced in more recent years, such as ‘Towards Zero’, are grounded in the pioneering work of Mr Morris.” In 1981, he became the director and founding chairman of the Hunter Valley Training Company (HVTC). It was originally established for a six-year term to produce a skilled workforce for the construction of Bayswater Power Station in Muswellbrook.
HVTC chairman Robert Cameron AO described Mr Morris as an “inspiration” and said he had left a legacy. The non-profit organisation, which operates out of its headquarters in Rutherford, has helped create skills training and employment opportunities for more than 22,000 young people across the state. “It is testament to Mr Morris’ passion and commitment to the value of vocational education and training that, three decades on, the company continues to provide skills training and employment outcomes for young people across its 10 regional divisions in NSW,” Mr Cameron said. “Mr Morris was highlyrespected and well regarded by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him. “He was an inspiration to his colleagues, students and employees at HVTC and will be deeply missed.” Mr Morris was named an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1988 for his contribution to politics, youth and community. A year later, he received the Polish government’s highest Order of Chivalry, the Polonia Restituta, for service to Poland and its people. - Ben Murphy

news Painstaking wait for heart transplant How long two-year-old Jack Kenny must wait for a vital heart transplant is anyone’s guess. The last transplant to take place on the ventricular assist device ward at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, where the toddler is receiving treatment, was in July last year. Jack’s family, originally from Nelson Bay, was forced to move to Melbourne in November when his condition declined. Diagnosed with cardiomyopathy at seven months, Jack’s parents Victoria and Pat already knew their son’s heart was under stress. This is a condition, for which there is no cure, where the heart is unable to pump blood properly due to disease in the muscle tissue. One morning in November, Jack woke looking pale and listless and wouldn’t eat or drink.
A concerned Victoria took him to a GP, who recommended she take her son to John Hunter Children’s Hospital. Jack’s condition deteriorated and he was airlifted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Westmead, where doctors feared the worst. He spent 10 to 12 days there, being monitored by a team of specialists and receiving heart and lung support from an ECMO machine. “He kind of came back to consciousness but he still wasn’t himself,” Victoria tells Newcastle Weekly. “When things got worse, [the medical team] decided they weren’t taking any chances and made arrangements to airlift him to The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. “That was confronting for us because we knew it was the last stop

before a heart transplant.” Victoria, Pat and little Jack have been in Melbourne ever since. They are one of eight families currently staying in the ward where other children also await heart transplants. The next heart available will go to the most suitable candidate. Jack is hooked up to the ventricular assist device, which helps the left side of his heart pump blood, 24/7. The family can only go outside for 30 minutes at a time, while the device runs on battery power. While the Heart Foundation has put them up in an apartment for the duration of Jack’s treatment, the family still has a mortgage to service at home with no active income, and a second baby on the way this week. Sense of place: it has become a worldwide social phenomenon. In August 2018, a 15-year-old Swedish climate change activist set off a global reaction that led to thousands of other students going on strike. Closer to home, Chief Judge of the Land and Environment Court, Brian Preston, ruled against the Rocky Hill coal mine development near Gloucester on the grounds it would increase greenhouse gas emissions and create visual and social impacts. For the Brandy Hill community, in the west of Port Stephens, a hard rock quarry’s bid to expand and operate 24 hours, seven days a week will bring about “the loss of peace that we used to get”. The quarry has been operating since 1983 with an expected life of 30 years.

Despite this, Mrs Ritchie compared the situation to the one that some Gloucester residents faced, and won, in the Land and Environment Court in February. “With Rocky Hill, Justice Preston said that sense of place, sense of community, if that [mine] was expanded, would be lost,” she says. “We, in Brandy Hill, feel that exactly the same would happen.” Another resident, Chantal Redman, moved to the area from Stockton almost four years ago. She bought a property on top of a hill after being told her main concern – the quarry – would soon wrap up its operations. “The more I learn, the more I hear, the more involved I get, the more concerned I get,” she says. “It’s health, for me and my children, in terms of the dust and dust pollution up here [on the hill], it’s trucking, it’s safety.” - Ben Murphy

news Sisters are doing it for themselves When Nerida Bint walked into a gym, 20 kilograms overweight and severely unhappy, she was turned away. “Oh darling, this is not for you,” a nameless face told her. Thirty-knot winds tested sailors in the 2019 Heaven Can Wait (HCW) Charity Sailing Regatta at Lake Macquarie. Race Director and Vice Commodore of the Royal Motor Yacht Club Toronto, Mel Steiner, said many competitors experienced gear failure. “[There were] 60 boats registered to start in the regatta, but three boats from outside Lake Macquarie dropped out before the start because of the forecast weather conditions and the difficulty of getting back to their home ports,” he said. “We also know of other boats that did not put an entry in for the same reason, or because of concerns about the depth of the Swansea Channel.” Only six of the 15 boats that entered in the 24-Hour Race managed to finish, with Tasha – a Lake Macquarie Yacht Club catamaran – taking out line
honours. Meanwhile, Andrew Sim claimed line honours in the One Lap Dash, a 30 nautical mile sprint around the length and breadth of the lake. Sim, who sailed a Moth called Out of the Blue, broke Nathan Outteridge’s 2013 record in the process, completing the circuit in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 20 seconds – a shade under three minutes quicker than the previous best time. The HCW regatta is a fundraiser, primarily for the Hunter Branch of Cancer Council NSW and their Home Help Program, with some money also going to Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie. Organisers expect to raise about $40,000 from this year’s event, while more than $300,000 has been generated in total. Sharks crush Knights in trial The Cronulla Sharks powered past Newcastle to win an NRL trial match 30-6 at Maitland’s No.1 Sportsground on Saturday. After an intense start from both sides, Cronulla’s Josh Dugan exposed the Knights’ right side
when he slipped through a gap to score in the fifth minute. The Sharks began to dominate possession and cracked Newcastle’s defence two more times in the first period. Josh Morris pounded on a loose
ball in the 26th minute for a try and then, on the stroke of halftime, big man Andrew Fifita barged his way over near the posts. New recruit Shaun Johnson booted all three conversions to hand the visitors an 18-0 lead at the break. It was more of the same in the second half as Sharks winger Sione Katoa produced a spectacular effort to score in the corner, before Chad Townsend raced through to make it 30-0. Newcastle finally posted its first points in the 58th minute when 18-year-old Starford Toa picked up a Kalyn Ponga pass and sidestepped his way to the line. Jets shoot down Victory A Dimi Petratos rocket helped close the gap on the top six as the Newcastle Jets clinched a 2-0 win on the road against Melbourne Victory at the weekend. Deep into second-half stoppage time on Saturday, Petratos, who had earlier come close with curling efforts, unleashed a powerful leftfooted strike into the top corner. His goal, along with Johnny Koutroumbis’ first of the season, moved the Jets to within two points of sixth-placed Wellington, which has a game in hand, in the race for the final A-League playoff spot. Melbourne City are four points ahead of Newcastle after a 2-all draw with ladder-leaders, Perth. The Jets will now tackle Central Coast in the F3 derby at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday 16 March. The secret to perfect scrambled eggs When done right, scrambled eggs can be one of the most delicious breakfasts of choice. The fluffy, creamy texture of the eggs contrasts exquisitely with the crunch of freshly-buttered toast. However, it’s not so easy to get the traditional breakfast staple right. Australian Eggs ambassador and celebrity chef, Manu Feildel, shares his tips on how to get the perfect scrambled eggs. How-to (Manu style): 1. Whisk 2-3 whole eggs with 2030mls milk, a good pinch of sea salt and pepper. 2. Heat a medium frying pan over a low heat, add a knob of butter and when foaming, pour in the eggs and leave for 60-90 seconds to begin to set. 3. Gently pull the egg from the edges, into the centre of the pan. Turn and tilt the pan so the runny egg takes up the available space and runs off the set egg, this gentle pulling will make egg ‘ribbons’. 4. Remove the pan from the heat before the egg is completely set. Leave to sit for a minute or two; this will let the egg gently fi nish cooking in its own heat. 5. To serve, place on top of 1-2 pieces of well-buttered toast and fi nish with a sprinkle of fresh herbs if desired. 38
Before you get started, here are some common mistakes: • Don’t let your pan get too hot. If the pan is too hot, the eggs will cook too quickly, burn and have a rubbery texture, rather than lovely and light. • Don’t be rough and move the eggs too much; light, gentle movement will help the eggs stay light and hold their integrity. • Don’t overcook the eggs, as this will also make them tough and rubbery. Remove them from the heat when still a little wet in places. The residual heat from the pan and the eggs will fi nish cooking them through. And if you’re feeling like something slightly different: • For more decadent eggs, you can keep six or so eggs in a glass jar with a piece of truffle. This will infuse the eggs with the truffle flavour, then, fi nely grate some of the truffle over the eggs just before serving. • For cheesy eggs, pour the egg mix into the pan and leave to cook for 60-90 seconds then scatter with your favourite grated cheese and continue the cooking process. Serve with hot, buttered toast and sliced ham or crispy speck. • For Asian style eggs, add 20ml of water and 10ml of light soy sauce instead of milk to the eggs and fi nish with Japanese mayonnaise, crispy shallots and a squeeze of sriracha or a drizzle of chilli oil.
Newcastle’s fi rst digital menu has launched at Blue Door Café. Powered by Eatsee (an arm of Crave Newcastle), the menu does away with traditional hardcopy placards and instead presents each food and drink item in sleek, digital form. Nutritious Delicious Burger Urge has taken on McDonald’s, lampooned the likes of Donald Trump and Pauline Hanson, and served up everything from alpaca meat to a chilli-laden burger that came with its own liability waver. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more controversial, the burger behemoth has unveiled its Nutritious Delicious menu, featuring Australia’s healthiest range of gourmet burgers. The new burgers claim to be, on average, 305kj (72 calories) lighter than their Grill’d counterparts and to contain 9.8g less carbohydrates and 3.4g less sugar. The menu is available now across Australia.
Flowers and foodies Newcastle Flower Markets will expand into the food arena with the launch of the region’s fi rst combined indoor Food and Flower Markets this Saturday 9 March. Stage one of the market’s development will showcase not only the incredible blooms locals have come to know and love, but also fantastic produce, including meat, bread, fresh fruit and vegetables and vegan cheese. The second stage will mark the introduction of another 20 vendors and the opening of the expanded café space, plus regular workshops. All are welcome to attend the public launch.

History as it unfolded At Templeton’s Crossing in October 1942, Private Nick Kennedy paused to write in his diary: “One wonders why all this strife should be… these men, in the prime of their life, cut down like flowers”. This is just one of the touching excerpts from Private Kennedy’s diary that feature in Newcastle author Jan McLeod’s debut title, Shadows on the Track. The book explores the 1942-43 Papuan campaign of the Pacific War. It describes, in harrowing detail, how Australia was “woefully unprepared” to fight a medical war in Papua and how soldiers paid the price, suffering from illness, tropical diseases and death. The book itself took McLeod about a year from start to finish, but one could argue she had been working towards it nearly half her life. In the early 90s, McLeod studied a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History, at the University of Newcastle. It was then her dear old dad produced an ice-cream container full of her great uncle Nick Kennedy’s war medals and Red Cross armband, as well as a diary.

He, along with another of McLeod’s great uncles, had served as a member of the 2nd Australian Field Ambulance, and was well placed to reflect on the futility of the war. McLeod returned to university to complete her Honours, before finishing her PhD on the Australian Army’s medical campaign in the Papua New Guinea war, in 2015. Her thesis was 160,000 words long. “I knew I’d have some work to do in cutting it back [for the book,]” McLeod told Newcastle Weekly. “I never set out to write a book initially, but my supervisor encouraged me to do so.” McLeod’s PhD formed the basis of her book, but it became so much more than that, complete with detailed maps and original photographs only her family had seen before. “I wanted to give [Private Kennedy’s account] academic rigour; I wanted it to become more than a personal story,” she added. At its next market on Sunday 24 March, Raid My Wardrobe stallholders will donate excess professional clothing, shoes and handbags to the charity, which opened on Hunter Street last month. The organisation supports women who have experienced situations that can make it difficult to assemble a job-ready wardrobe, such as surviving family, domestic or sexual violence; homelessness; incarcerations; or returning to work after having children. Volunteers provide style advice and a professional outfit, suitable for a job interview, court appearances and formal appointments, as well as a support network and career development tools to help them achieve self-sufficiency. Raid My Wardrobe founder Rachel Prest said she chose Dress for Success because it raised awareness about the real difficulties some women faced and how women could help one another. “We feel privileged knowing we are gifting women with essential professional clothing items that can assist with their self-dignity and worth and economic empowerment,” Ms Prest said. Dress for Success volunteer Kate
Davies felt equally as privileged. “Collaborating with Raid My Wardrobe will be a great opportunity for us to achieve some important aims,” Ms Davies said. “We hope to connect with amazing women in our region who can become advocates and even volunteers with us. “We hope to source goodquality, lightly-used work clothing and accessories. We’ll make sure these items find homes with women who need a boost in confidence and a chance at economic empowerment.” Dress for Success will also be fundraising for the new Hunter Region service on the day. Federation beauty’s colourful history A lot of love has been poured into “Kelso”, a unique piece of Stroud history. The beautiful six-bedroom, threebathroom federation home, built in 1901, has hosted many a houseguest over the past eight years as Stroud Bed and Breakfast. It all started with an A-frame sign in the front yard. “[My partner, Trevor Gregory, and I] have five adult children between us, so we wanted a home where the whole family could gather,” owner Barbara Peacock tells Newcastle Weekly. “When the house was empty, we’d invite people to stay, as Stroud has lots of events such as the Stroud Show, rodeos and the Brick and Rolling Pin Throwing Competition. “Then there’s reunions, weddings, funerals and christenings – anything
that brings people together. “We must have hosted hundreds of visitors over the years, who all come to experience good old-fashioned country hospitality.” In those eight years since Trevor and Barbara bought the property following a tree change from Sydney, the house has been further restored to its original glory. According to Barbara, the previous owner put in the lion’s share of the work, purchasing the property in 2004 in a run-down state when it was doomed for demolition. However, Trevor and Barbara have not wasted a moment on it either, spending a “couple hundred thousand” dollars on bringing it into the 21st Century, including installing a new kitchen three years ago. “Where [the previous owner]
did the extension, Trevor even went around and changed all of the Phillips head screws to flat head to reflect the period,” she says. “We’ve put a lot of thought into its authenticity.” But if you think the home’s history stops there, think again. A century ago, for at least a couple of decades, the building was a maternity hospital. Some of its features today hark back to this time, such as the distinguished double doors that used to lead to the operating theatre – now the living room. “We’ve had people stay here who were born here,” Barbara says. “Others remember visiting a sibling when they were born.” The house’s former hospital days might explain the friendly ghost that

KEEPING ACTIVE I have never been one to sit idle. I love moving my body and keeping fit, whether it’s gym, yoga, swimming, gardening or lounge room dancing, I move every day. I especially love being in nature and thrive on ocean swims, bush walks and, more recently, mountain bike riding.
My favourite things HEALTHY FOOD I grew up on an orchard in regional NSW with every fruit and vegetable plant imaginable. I am of Italian origin - I love food and I love cooking! Nowadays, food is my medicine and I am passionate about natural health and wellness, supporting local farmers and eating fresh, organic, natural, vegan foods.
RECYCLED FASHION I’ve trawled op shops and markets for years since my uni days in Sydney. It’s thrilling to find a treasure in your size for a bargain and telling your best friend about it. It is feel-good fashion too, kind to the earth, and that’s super important to me. Now I do it for a living!

A former primary school teacher turned eco fashionista entrepreneur, Rachel Prest, mother of two, has been inspiring Newcastle women to refresh, recycle and reinvent their wardrobes for nearly 10 years. Over the years she has rallied her community and supplied much-needed resources to numerous local charities, including Got Your Back Sista, Dress for Success, Uplift Bras, Lifeline, Red Cross, Vinnies, Salvos and Samaritans. 70
LIVE MUSIC From open-air concerts and festivals to intimate shows, I love getting my groove on at a live performance. Being in event management, I appreciate the experience of people coming together in the community. I love the vibe and meeting new people.
