This week...
A reader recently told me he enjoyed my editor’s columns as a prelude to his Newcastle Weekly fix. I laughed and said that, after almost two years as editor, I was surprised I hadn’t run out of things to say yet. (Spare a thought for my Canberra Weekly counterpart, Julie Samaras, who’s held the top job for a decade now!) He noted that being able to comment on the world around you, with some degree of wit, was a skill, just like that of a comedian. I’ve been watching a bit of stand-up comedy lately and find I do enjoy this kind of anecdotal humour, because not everybody has an eye or ear for it. Based on personal experiences, these stories may be true but partly embellished, which makes them funny and relatable. Some of my favourite comedians of this genre include Tom Segura and Aziz Ansari. I guess, to some extent, I try to do the same; perhaps with less of a focus on being funny and moreso on being poetic. I suspect the reader in question will get quite a kick out of knowing he served as this week’s inspiration. You never know when or where it’s going to strike, so it’s important to be on the lookout. Thank you, kind sir.

Ride to raise awareness A charity ride that has ties to Winston Churchill will hit the Hunter Region for the first time next month amid its 10th anniversary celebrations. The Black Dog Ride roared into
action in 2009 to start a national conversation about depression and suicide prevention. Founder Steve Andrews completed an inaugural solo trip in 26 days, travelling across
15,000 kilometres. The event went on to become a national charity, generating millions for mental health programs. Its mascot, a little toy dog named Winston, serves as a tribute to former British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, who popularised the phrase ‘black dog’, which many regard as a nod to his severe depression. After a decade of success, the ride will now come to Newcastle on Sunday 17 March. Set to start at Sandgate Markets, the 106-kilometre, two-hour ride will go through Wallsend, Heddon Greta, Maitland, Paterson, and arrive at Fighter World, Williamtown, tracing the shape of a dog’s head. Shared coordinator Eddie Bell said he hoped the event would attract hundreds of riders. “The Black Dog Ride started in Western Australia originally, but is now encompassing national one-

The Black Dog Ride aims to break down the barrier of silence and encourage friends, family and colleagues to seek help. Registrations for the Newcastle event will start at 7.30am. news University unveils first Honeysuckle building
The first building in the university’s Honeysuckle development will feature smart glass glazing.
The University of Newcastle has unveiled the design for the first building on its Honeysuckle City Campus Development. Sleek, sophisticated, and with smart glazing, the $25 million facility aims to foster community and

industry engagement. University of Newcastle vice-chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky, said the campus would create a strong presence in the CBD. “The unveiling of the design for the first building on our [development] is a momentous step forward in our long-term vision to grow, develop, and be a driver of an innovative regional economy,” he said. “Our region’s future musicians, graphic designers, writers and entrepreneurs will be just some of the people who will use this new site and benefit from its contemporary design and facilities.” The 20-metre building, bordered by Worth Place and Honeysuckle Drive, will use transparent glass and landscaping, with the potential for digital display. Shared zones are set to include educational seminar and conference spaces, informal networking event spaces, and exhibitions. The university claims its innovation hub will attract and cultivate world-leading researchers and a knowledge-based smart workforce, while
a School of Creative Industries area will include state-of-the-art teaching and learning studios. The hub is part of the Hunter Innovation Project – a partnership between the University of Newcastle, Newcastle council, Hunter DiGiT, and Newcastle Now. Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the announcement was a significant leap forward for innovation-led economic growth and jobs diversification. “We continue to collaborate with the University of Newcastle and our partners through the Hunter Innovation Project to increase digital connectivity and capture more city-data to enable residents, entrepreneurs and businesses to thrive in the digital century,” she said. The community can find out more and provide feedback at two sessions in the NeW Space foyer today (Thursday 28 February), from 6pm to 8pm, and on Saturday 2 March, from 10am to 12pm. news School goes gung-ho on soft plastics Belair Public School has partnered with a retail giant to take its war on waste to the next level. The Adamstown Heights-based school is working with Westfield Kotara owner Scentre Group to close the loop on soft plastics recycling as part of the Plastic Police program. The retailer bought 179 car wheel stops, to install in its newly-renovated carpark, made by a third party from soft plastics collected by students and teachers. Scentre Group also donated two bench seats to the school, made using the same recycling process. Keen Newcastle Weekly readers might remember Biddabah Public School in Warners Bay was the first in the world to take part in this initiative in 2016. “The kids are really excited about the bench seats,” Belair Public School teacher Emily Allars said.
“They want to know what happens to their chip packets and snack wrappers, so the bench seats enable them to see what they have helped achieve.” Founded by environmentalist Samantha Cross, the Plastic Police program aims to reduce the amount of soft plastics sent to landfill. In less than a year, Belair Public School has saved nearly half a tonne, or 1250,000 pieces, of soft plastics from precisely that fate, and noticed less playground litter as well as positive behavioural changes. Inspired by the ABC’s War on Waste TV series, a group of students initially wrote to the principal wanting to reduce the school’s waste. After implementing a threebin system for mixed recyclables, compost and general waste, Ms Allars noticed most of the waste in the general bin was soft plastic
packaging from lunches, snacks and the canteen. So, the school implemented the Plastic Police program. To involve the students, Ms Allars started the Belair Waste Warriors, a rotating group of student volunteers encouraging other kids to recycle their soft plastics and ensure that no food scraps end up in the soft plastics bin. “Perhaps the most positive outcome has been the response of the younger students, especially kindergarteners,” Ms Allars added. “They take [what they’ve learned] to their parents and want to start recycling soft plastics at home, too.” The school encourages parents to pack lunches in reusable containers and reduce the number of single-use items such as cling wrap and plastic bags. - Georgia Osland
Volunteer drivers needed The Leukaemia Foundation is urgently calling for volunteer drivers in the Newcastle area to help transport people living with blood cancer to medical appointments. Currently there are limited volunteers available, and therefore many people affected are either unable to access the transport service or are placed on long waiting lists. The foundation’s much-loved patient transport service has been providing people with free transport for more than two decades. Last year, volunteer drivers across Australia made 32,940 patient trips and covered almost 1.5 million kilometres – the equivalent of 37 times around the world. Volunteers are asked to provide a few hours of their time per week, fortnight or month. To find out more, phone 1800 620 420.

news Firm stance on gaol route Cessnock council will write to the state government over concerns about the Cessnock Correctional Centre’s impact on local roads. The government has been upgrading the gaol to provide additional minimum-andmaximum-security capacity. In a bid to reduce traffic on residential streets to the south, Corrective Services NSW is considering a new access road. At its latest meeting, Cessnock council reaffirmed its position that all access to, and from, the facility should be via the state road network. It stated community members agreed the current road access – via both Lindsay and Mavis streets – was not acceptable and the preferred option was a direct route from the centre, through land owned by Corrective Services
NSW and Hunter New England Health, to Wine Country Drive. “Our residents should not be footing the bill for the ongoing road maintenance costs of a NSW government facility,” Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said. “For such a large development, the community deserves better. “This debate has been going on for far too long and our residents deserve to be listened to.” Cr Pynsent said the council would write to government representatives, including NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. He asked the government and opposition to join the council in supporting ratepayers within Cessnock local government area and help secure a long-term solution. The centre’s upgrade is expected to be completed in 2020.

news A taste of region’s diversity It’s been a “labour of love”, but a new café in Waratah is ready to serve up a taste of the region’s diversity. Hunter Multicultural Communities (HMC) will celebrate the project’s completion with an open day on Monday 4 March. Business development manager, Jason Scriven, said the café would provide flavours from around the world. “There will be a themed day once a week – it might be Italian one week and then Polish another,” he said. “It’s a perfect opportunity to showcase some of the work we do in the community. “It was a real labour of love for me, it was the first big project that I’ve done since I took up this position here and I nurtured it from start to finish.
“We got local schools involved as well and tried to make it a real community project.” Apart from the café, the project included a professional mural, whereby local artists worked with art groups from Callaghan College, Waratah, to produce a multicultural-themed artwork. HMC, a non-profit organisation that supports established, new and emerging multicultural communities in the region, won a federal grant in September 2018 for the café’s construction. It also gained funding to keep bees and chickens on the premises as part of its extended community garden program. Other services offered by the HMC include aged care, health and wellbeing centres; education and awareness; social support and friendship groups; a men’s shed;

Push for closer treatment A nationwide campaign to improve access to radiation therapy for cancer patients launched in Newcastle on Monday. The Radiation Therapy Advisory Group-led campaign, titled Radiation Therapy for Regional Australia, kicked off at GenesisCare in Gateshead. It calls on the federal government and opposition, in the lead-up to this year’s federal election, to address the “clear underuse” of radiation therapy identified in 13 population centres across regional Australia. In Europe and North America, one in two cancer patients receive radiation therapy as part of their treatment. In Australia, it is one in three. One of the key barriers to accessing the treatment, according to the advisory group, is distance
from a treatment centre. Studies show that people living with cancer in regional areas are up to 35% more likely to die within five years of diagnosis than patients in the city. In response, the advisory group is asking the government to equalise access to radiation therapy for all Australians by making policy and funding commitments in some of these regional areas – the majority of which are in NSW. These include the Far North Coast, Grafton, Clarence Valley, Armidale, Nambucca/Kempsey, Taree, Bega/Eurobodalla, Griffith and Western NSW. “Radiation therapy is a proven, life-saving treatment,” Associate Professor Peter O’Brien said. “Cancer doesn’t discriminate, nor should cancer treatments.”

While the 85km ride from Speers Point Park now only covers Eastlakes, as far south as Catherine Hill Bay, this year’s route has been refined even further, taking in the scenic sights of the historic seaside town plus the Munmorah State Conservation Area and Fernleigh Track, with far more on-road riding than last year. “There have been significant improvements to last year’s route and the organisers are working hard at making it an enjoyable experience,” Mr Henningham added. news Father’s work recognised Father Nicolaos Zervas has been announced as the winner of the 2019 Newcastle NSW Seniors Local Achievement Award. A volunteer for more than 40 years, Father Zervas has helped organisations such as Meals on Wheels, Northern Settlement Services, Ethnic Communities Council, Lifeline, and many community groups. He’s also spent the past four decades as the priest at St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, taught scripture at local schools, is a founding member of the Greek day care, a life member of Hamilton Olympic Football Club, and a chaplain of Newcastle hospitals. In 1993, he received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to the community. Newcastle state MP Tim
Crakanthorp described Father Zervas as a “blessing”. “His volunteer work spans after-hours, interpreting for Lifeline, through to assisting with Meals on Wheels for the elderly,” he said. “Father Zervas serves on so many community organisations, he must be the lifeblood of volunteering in Newcastle. “I can think of no one more worthy than Father Zervas as the recipient of the [award].” The NSW Seniors Local Achievement Awards celebrate seniors’ efforts in a range of categories, including business, environment, science, agriculture, and health and wellbeing. Field of dreams a step closer A world-class training hub that aims to rival any in rugby league is one step closer to reality for the Newcastle Knights. The first sod was turned on the new $20 million Centre of Excellence at District Park, Broadmeadow, last week. It will include three new training fields and a multi-purpose facility, as well as a planned 2.5-kilometre walkway and cycle path around the site and an outdoor gym for recreational use.
Knights chief executive Philip Gardner said the sod-turning event was an important day for both the club and Hunter community. “Not only will we have a first-class facility to rival any in the game, but the Centre of Excellence will provide an additional venue for local and regional community needs,” he said. “It will see all our staff and players under the one roof and will ensure we have the best tools to prepare the next generation of young Knights to
carry the club forward.” In May 2018, the state government announced it would match the $10 million put up by the Knights’ owners, Wests Group, as part of its vision to activate the Hunter Sports and Entertainment Precinct. The Centre of Excellence is expected to be built and operational by 2020. Meanwhile, Kalyn Ponga was heavily involved in both of Newcastle’s tries during an 18-10 trial match loss to St George Illawarra on Saturday. Ponga, who has switched position from fullback to five-eighth ahead of the 2019 NRL season, provided the final pass for Lachlan Fitzgibbon and then linked up with new halves partner Mitchell Pearce to send Edrick Lee over in the corner. Visitors Newcastle led 10-6 at half-time, but Dragons flyer Mikaele Ravalawa bagged a double after the break to seal a win for the home side. The Knights will play a second trial against the Cronulla Sharks at Maitland No.1 Sportsground this Saturday 2 March. Gates open at 8.45am, with the main game to kick off at 5.30pm. Forward thrilled with move Newcastle striker Kaine Sheppard says he has “loved every minute” of his time with the club so far. The English-born attacker, who joined the Jets this season and signed a one-year contract extension in January, started on the right wing during the 0-all stalemate with Adelaide at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The draw meant Newcastle missed the chance to capitalise on its rivals’ slip-ups in the race for the sixth, and final, A-League playoff spot. With seven rounds to go, the Jets, 23 points, edged closer to Wellington, 28, after the Phoenix lost 1-0 to Sydney FC, but couldn’t make up ground on Melbourne City, 29, when it drew 1-all with crosstown foes, the Victory. Despite the Jets’ precarious finals predicament, Sheppard says he is thrilled with the move to Newcastle. The 25-year-old has bagged three goals this season to date, including the winner in round 15 against Central Coast. “We would’ve liked to be higher in the table but, in terms of my development, I’ve got some minutes in, got some starts, and scored a couple of goals,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. Sheppard started his career
at Leyton Orient in 2010 and bounced around several English clubs on loan before earning more regular appearances at Braintree Town, in Essex, and Histon, in Cambridgeshire. Then, in 2014, he made the move to Australia and landed at Heidelberg United in Victoria’s National Premier League (NPL). After an impressive stint, he joined competition rivals Avondale before Newcastle snapped him up last year. Sheppard says his experience in England and Victoria’s NPL helped prepare him for the rigours of the A-League. “At places like Braintree, I was playing against [grown] men – they pushed you around and didn’t care if they kicked you,” he says. “When I came to Australia, I didn’t really know what to expect, but I was surprised by the level of the NPL and the A-League. “A lot of people who come over from England are surprised by the standard and, for me, it’s improving every year.” Newcastle will face Melbourne Victory away this Saturday 2 March from 7.50pm. The Jets then return to action against Central Coast on Saturday 16 March at McDonald Jones Stadium. - Ben Murphy

Duck and mango Sesame prawn skewers with Asian rice paper rolls mango salad Serves: 4
large rice paper rounds
Serves: 4
sliced Asian barbecued duck
36 green king prawns, peeled and de-veined
slices of mango
¼ cup soy sauce
strips of cucumber
½ cup sesame seeds
strips of green onion
1 Aussie mango, peeled and chopped
mint leaves
2 Tbsp roughly chopped peanuts
hoi sin sauce
¼ cup coriander leaves 2 Tbsp Thai basil leaves 1 Tbsp rice wine vinegar sliced green onion, to serve Place the prawns in a large bowl, add the soy sauce, toss to coat then cover and refrigerate for 10 minutes. Drain prawns from marinade and thread onto skewers. Spray with a little cooking oil spray. Place the sesame seeds on a large plate. Coat each skewer in the sesame seeds. Heat a little oil in a large, non-stick frying pan over medium low heat. Cook the skewers in batches, turning once gently until golden and cooked through. While the prawn skewers are cooking, combine the chopped mango with the peanuts, herbs, rice wine vinegar and two tablespoons water. Serve the skewers sprinkled with extra sesame seeds, along with Asian mango salad and rice or noodles. Garnish with green onion. 26

Lay on a flat work surface and place thin slices of Asian barbecued duck along the middle.
Serves: 4
Top with slices of mango, strips of cucumber, green onion and mint leaves.

Roll up, enclosing one end and serve with hoi sin sauce. Tip: Asian barbecued duck, also known as Chinese or Peking duck, is available in Asian supermarkets, or packaged in most supermarkets.
1 cup self-raising flour pinch of salt 1 lightly beaten egg 35g melted butter and 1 cup milk, whisking until smooth 2 Aussie mangoes In a large bowl, sift 1 cup self-raising flour with ½ teaspoon bi-carb soda and a pinch of salt. Add one lightly beaten egg, 35g melted butter and 1 cup milk, whisking until smooth. Heat a little oil in a non-stick frying pan. Cook teaspoonfuls of mixture in batches, about the size of small pikelets. Cook until golden and set. Allow to cool then top blinis with sour cream, chopped mango, strips of smoked salmon and dill sprigs.

Lake’s pelicans made famous The affable pelicans of Lake Macquarie inspired illustrations for three new children’s books based on Colin Thiele’s beloved 1964 novella, Storm Boy. Behind the illustrations is Caves
Beach artist Jenni Goodman. “As an emerging picture book illustrator I was honoured to be asked [by New Holland Publishers] to create them,” Goodman told Newcastle Weekly.
“Storm Boy is such a classic.” Consisting of 28 illustrations starring Storm Boy and Mr Percival the pelican, the collection features in three board books: Storm Boy Colours, Storm Boy Numbers, and Storm Boy Rescue. They also appear in a special edition of the novella, released at the end of last year, titled Storm Boy – The Illustrated Story – including on the front cover. Goodman didn’t have to look far for inspiration. “Many of the beautiful birdlife described in the novella also live here in Lake Macquarie, so, when I was commissioned for this amazing job, I grabbed my camera and headed down to Swansea Channel,” she said. “At the channel boat ramp there were fishermen cleaning their fish and the pelicans put on a wonderful display for me. “They were snickering and
lining up for food, just as Mr Percival does in the novel.” Goodman’s artworks will be on display for the local community at Swansea Library until 11 May through the library’s Launchpad exhibition program. She will also host an author talk and children’s activities at a fun-day planned for Saturday 9 March from 10.30am to 12pm at the library. Prior to partnering with New Holland Publishers, Goodman had only dabbled in pet portraits and medical illustrations for Hunter ENT. Illustrating was something the registered nurse had always wanted to pursue, but, as is often the case, life got in the way. Goodman’s next work, a picture book written by Shae Millward, titled A Boy and A Dog, will be released in March. - Georgia Osland

Hollywood lands with beach pop-up Hollywood landed in Newcastle last week to celebrate the release of Netflix’s latest blockbuster series. A giant umbrella was unveiled on the shore of Merewether Beach as part of a promotion for The Umbrella Academy. Internationally-acclaimed Australian artist and designer James Dive, who also worked on the Sydney Sculptures By The Sea, was behind the large-scale installation. He said Merewether Beach ticked all the boxes as an ideal backdrop. “We had to find a great spot for our huge umbrella and Newcastle was exactly what we were looking for,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “We’ve been up here for the last couple of months – there’s so much energy on [Merewether] beach and it’s surrounded by the café and baths.”
Mr Dive said the giant umbrella, which was installed on the beach over four days, measured about 12 metres wide and six metres high. He added the artwork proved to be quite technical, with the fabric made from yacht sails. “As always, it’s the prework that takes the most time,” he said. “The umbrella had already been built in the studio, tested, and developed over the last eight weeks. “It obviously needed to be suited to rough coastal conditions and just anywhere outdoors basically. “I think that doing these largescale installations for Netflix really draws on my experience of creating things in public that everyone can hopefully enjoy.” The Umbrella Academy, which launched on Netflix in mid-February, is an adaptation of the cult comic

book series created by Gerard Way – the lead vocalist and co-founder of now-defunct rock band My Chemical Romance. The series tells the story of a dysfunctional family of superheroes who, after the death of their adopted father, are reunited when a sibling’s safety is jeopardised as the apocalypse looms large. On the same day in 1989, 43 infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the
day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his ‘children’ to save the world. Upon his death, the six surviving members join forces and work together to solve the mystery around his demise. Cricket mates master MKR Perhaps it’s their history as cricket mates, or maybe it’s their shared zest for food that makes Hunter My Kitchen Rules contestants Matt Gawthrop and Luke Stewart such a dynamic duo in the kitchen. Either way, the pair hit their competitors for six in last night’s Group 1 vs Group 2 challenge. Tasked with cooking smoked venison, neither of the boys were feeling particularly confident – especially Matt – when their fellow competitors nominated them to represent Group 2. Well, Luke might have had something to do with that. “[He] volunteered us without much consultation,” Matt joked. “I was doing my best to blend into the background because my confidence wasn’t sky high.”
Despite this, the group reassured them that cooking venison was apparently just like cooking kangaroo (which they dished up in the Instant Restaurant round last week) and sent them on their way. Just as well, as the win against Mick and Jodie-Anne gave the boys a much-needed confidence boost to carry them through the rest of the competition. “Without giving too much away, it was not the confidence boost we wanted but the one we needed,” Matt said. Hailing from Lake Macquarie and Maitland, respectively, social worker Matt and primary school teacher Luke met playing cricket when they were in their midteens. At the time they represented

Later, they returned to Newcastle to play for the university’s team. Nowadays, their focus is on family life, but they’re still as close as ever from their early sporting days – something they both say gave them a competitive edge on MKR. “With cricket, we were always the first there and the last to leave,” Matt said. “When it came to MKR, we wanted it to be the same; we knew we weren’t going to be the best so we put in the hard work.” “It’s more about teamwork than skill and communication is important,” Luke added. “I think we have that down pat.” My Kitchen Rules airs Sundays at 7pm and Monday through Wednesday from 7.30pm on Channel Seven. - Georgia Osland

Footstool, pouf, ottoman – the terms are often used interchangeably but, according to Dana Tosolini of Concepts Interior Design, there are subtle differences. A footstool generally has wooden legs or base of some kind and is low to the ground. It was designed as a short step to reach up into cabinets and closets or just to rest your feet upon. It’s not intended to be a comfortable place to sit. The pouf (pronounced ‘poof’) is defi ned as “a large solid cushion, usually cylindrical or cubic in shape, used as a seat”. It is derived from the French word,

Lawns need rejuvenating after a long, hot summer with army grub and black beetle attack.
Tomorrow is the first day of autumn, and boy, haven’t we been waiting for it this year. The heat may come back, but March marks an important period in the gardening calendar: it is time to repair the damage from the intense summer with very little rain. Lawns have been decimated by army grub and black beetles – double threat this year. This happens when it is hot and dry, leaving lawns brown and patchy. It would be wise to keep up treatment every 10 days until new growth appears in brown areas; never treat just the brown patches, as the grub has moved on to what is left of the green grass. Apply Seasol to the brown patches to try and stimulate root growth before winter comes. My catalpas, which feature in my garden, are standards with large heads of lime-green leaves. by leaf miner, which causes the new growth to curl which can be pruned back after the weather cools. There isn’t much to do to prevent this leaf curl other than regular applications of Eco-oil, although I have found Ecofend, specified for citrus leaf miner, is having some effect. Ground-grown citrus should be fed with poultry manure out under the drip line on well-watered soil. Apply, then water again. A couple of weeks later, using the same application method, apply citrus fertiliser. Never use citrus fertiliser on potted plants – they will burn and defoliate. Use slow-release products such as Bounceback, applying to a wellwatered plant. Annuals such as pansies and sweet peas will soon become available in retail outlets – it is too soon and too hot. Beds can be prepared by removing spent flowers and vegetables, then dig in poultry manure and an all-purpose plant food, which should be left for a couple of weeks before planting. Sasanqua camellias will be setting buds soon; feed with cow manure and apply peat moss over the surface to maintain acidity. This treatment can also be applied to Japonica camellias, which will bloom in winter.

Brian Coffey
DISTRICT GOVERNOR - ROTARY DISTRICT 9670
Born, raised and educated in Newcastle, Brian moved to Maitland in 1979 to start a 34-year career in law enforcement. He is one of the longest-serving police officers to serve his career at Maitland. Brian joined the Rotary Club of East Maitland in 1999, after speaking on policing at a meeting. Since then, he has served in nearly every capacity at club level and volunteers for many community projects. He has been involved in Youth Exchange, Rotary Oceanic Medical Aid for Children and Rotary Australia World Community Services, providing to the needy in Australia and in the South Pacific. Brian was instrumental in receiving $250,000 in drought money from the Channel 9 appeal for distribution in the area. As Rotary District Governor, Brian oversees 47 clubs from Newcastle to Bourke and travels to various conferences throughout Australia as a guest speaker. 62
The opportunity to speak at Rotary and join, changed and shaped my life. I have international friendships and get personal satisfaction from helping people. The modern Rotary of today is a far cry from the ceremonial, traditional one that I joined. I look forward to the unchartered journey ahead for me.
CARS I have had a childhood passion for Falcon GT’s; purchasing and restoring a GTHO Falcon in 2005. It has been a bonus to confirm and track down its race history late last year after locating its racing log books.
TRAVEL We love going to remote areas in Australia or overseas. We have dived in isolated parts of the world, with whale sharks, the world’s best shipwrecks, trekked, back packed, been stranded on atolls in the Pacific and stood on the side of a volcano. The crown is bringing a little boy back from a small island for life-changing surgery.

Newcastle Art Gallery is custodian of one of the largest collections of Sodeisha ceramics outside of Japan. Formed in post-war Kyoto, many Sodeisha artists came from families with long ceramic histories. In forming the movement, artists broke free from established practices and produced largely non-functional works. To recognise the dialogue between Sodeisha and ceramic practice today, Sodeisha: connected to Australia places the Gallery’s substantial collection alongside ten contemporary ceramicists from Australia and Japan. This significant exhibition also includes a site-specific installation by original Sodeisha member, Satoru Hoshino.
