This week... From the editor Does the Newcastle Light Rail pass the pub test? It’s a question to which, as a journalist, I’m curious to know the answer. Initial reviews appear mixed, from what I have seen on social media and heard via word of mouth. Some people are delighted that the network is finally up and running, launching Newcastle into a new era (you only have to look as far as this week’s cover to behold the CBD’s jawdropping transformation); while others are disgruntled by the fare charged. I will have to venture into town to decide for myself. I will say, though, that it has become increasingly difficult to find a park in town, which could pose a problem for inner-city workers who want to park-andride with a short commute via light rail; not so much if you were connecting via bus or ferry, as it only costs an extra 20 cents to hop on the tram. The upside of fewer cars on the road, however, is of course the environmental benefits of a reduction in our carbon footprint. It’s about time we take more social responsibility, as other global cities have done. Flip to page 10 for all you need to know about the light rail. - Georgia Osland

news Road trip to support farmers A busload of eager shoppers will inject muchneeded cash into rural towns next month as a show of support amid the ongoing drought. The We Care Road Trip is set to depart Newcastle for Murrurundi and Narrabri. An overnight stay in Moree will then include a special meet-and-greet with farmers, plus live entertainment, before a final stop at Manilla on the way home. Each bus seat costs $100, which will go directly to farmers in need via the local Country Women’s Association. Aside from the financial benefits, organiser Anne-Marie Best believed the group’s presence may be just as important. “We want to show that city dwellers are thinking about our rural communities and that we’ll do whatever we can for them,” she told Newcastle Weekly. An inaugural event last September, which included stops at Merriwa, Gulargambone, Coonabarabran and Willowtree, was hailed as a great success. It had a total financial impact of $27,705 via

seat sales, donations, raffles, auctions, and money spent in the towns. “Some of the areas we went to [the first time] have had some rain since then, but it was very dry,” Ms Best added. “The communities we visited were wonderfully welcoming, especially Coonabarabran. “We had farmers drive up to thank us when we were leaving, and people stopped us in the street as well. “It’s a different route this time, so we’re not sure what we’ll see, but most of NSW is in severe drought.” Warrumbungle Shire’s mayor at the time, Peter Shinton, wrote to the group to praise its “uplifting” presence in Coonabarabran after the first road trip. “The injection of funds into our town has been well received and the opening of so many businesses on a Sunday morning, which has traditionally been a time when businesses are closed in Coonabarabran, highlights to us the importance of your visit,” he wrote. news A regal cause for celebration There have been bumps along the road, but Newcastle’s last singlescreen picturehouse is now set to expand its operations five years after reopening to the public. A 1950s-themed party at the weekend marked the fifth anniversary since the Regal Cinema was born again. Manager Jo Smith and her husband, proprietor George Merryman, awarded prizes for best dressed, while the duo projected a classic British comedy from that era, The Smallest Show on Earth, for the audience. Appropriately, the movie is about a couple who reopen an old-time cinema, despite seemingly insurmountable odds. Mr Merryman said the Regal would host special movie nights and themed film festivals throughout the year.
He added that, since the iconic Tower Cinemas closed on King Street in December, audiences had increased and there were some quality films no longer screening in the Newcastle area. “It’s our small attempt to help fill at least part of the void left by the Tower Cinemas,” Mr Merryman said. While the Birmingham Gardens cinema’s future looks bright, it was under a cloud again last year. A development, planned by Newcastle council, threatened the Regal car park and the financial viability of the cinema. “Lack of parking is one of the key factors that killed the Tower Cinemas in town,” Mr Merryman said. “The good news is that the car park Regal patrons have used for 40 years is still there and council has
assured us nothing would be done that could jeopardise the viability of the cinema. “Perfect timing, too, because we’re going to need every inch of that lot now that the Tower has closed.” For Mrs Smith – the woman credited with staging a last-minute rescue of the Regal prior to its reopening in 2014 – choosing a highlight over the past five years proved difficult. However, she acknowledged there was one recent honour that stood out. The Regal is listed in the credits of the most successful Australian movie of 2018. Director Bruce Beresford hosted a test screening of Ladies in Black at the Regal six months before the film was released. The screening helped shape

the final version, and the Regal is thanked by name and location. “If the Regal’s name could only be attached to one movie we screened over the past five years – and there have been hundreds – we’re so pleased it was this one,” Mrs Smith said. - Ben Murphy

Pool safety warning
Hunter seafarers travelled to Canberra last week, rallying for Australia’s shipping industry following job losses in January. Around 70 people lost their jobs on board the MV Mariloula and MV Lowlands Brilliance when Bluescope and BHP axed the contracts of the last two Australian-crewed coastal bulk iron carriers. Among the crowd was Tighes Hill’s David Grant, who was on board the MV Mariloula in the China Sea when he heard by email that he had lost his job. “It came out of the blue,” he said. “And it didn’t help that we were in the middle of the ocean with terrible internet so it was really hard to get any information or contact our families.” Mr Grant, who had worked on the ship for three years and in the industry for seven, said he was concerned jobs would be given to foreign workers. “You can’t bring a foreign worker to run goods by road,” he said. “Why are they allowed to do it on the Blue Highway?”
A University of Newcastle study has raised concerns about the impact of catch-and-release fishing on sharks. Research led by Newcastle marine biologist Dr Vincent Raoult used an underwater drone to see how sharks behaved after they were captured and then placed back in the water. “The footage showed that sharks captured and exposed to a boat deck for 15 minutes swam for a maximum of 30 seconds after release, before becoming largely immobile for five minutes,” Dr Raoult said. “A possible explanation for the lengthy period of immobility is that deck-exposed sharks use the remaining oxygen contained in their blood to try to escape the stress event, leaving their tissues starved of oxygen or ‘hypoxic’. “The short burst of rapid swimming immediately after release could be an attempt to reverse these hypoxic conditions, an escape reaction to high stress environments or the result of thermal shock when the shark re-enters the water.” Sharks that were quickly released after being handled recovered much more rapidly.
Lake Macquarie council has issued a warning about the risk of drowning in backyard pools after new data revealed about 70% of pools across the city failed safety inspections. Analysis of 1,840 pool inspections conducted during 2018 shows more than 1,200 did not comply with NSW safety legislation. Upon reinspection, over 40% still didn’t make the grade. Senior compliance officer, Ndabezinhle Mothobi, said common problems included gates that didn’t close properly, failure to provide a current CPR chart on display in the pool area, and the presence of objects along the fence-line. “A lot of gates will close automatically if you pull them wide open, but they also need to latch shut even if only slightly resting on the latch,” he said. “It’s frightening, but time and time again across Australia, backyard drownings have occurred because a pool gate has been left just slightly ajar.” Pool compliance officers can issue $550 on-the-spot fines for homeowners whose pools do not comply.

Light rail all systems go With the Newcastle Light Rail now up and running in the CBD, civic leaders are already looking ahead to “Light Rail 2.0”. The second instalment would stretch beyond the CBD, connecting Wickham to Broadmeadow, and thus the heavy rail corridor to the light rail network, according to transport operator Keolis Downer

Hunter’s corporate affairs director Andrew Fletcher. “I think there is unanimous support [for light rail expansion] from our civic leaders; certainly [Newcastle] lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes has been very vocal about the need for Light Rail 2.0 to start being planned,” Mr Fletcher told Newcastle Weekly.
“It would connect to the heavy rail [in Broadmeadow], which would be useful for major events at [McDonald Jones] Stadium, and complement plans to develop the area with affordable, mediumdensity housing.” For now, Keolis Downer, and indeed the community, is celebrating the completion of what has been almost six years in the making, from state funding allocation to tools down. The 2.7-kilometre Newcastle Light Rail has six stops, from Newcastle Interchange on Stewart Avenue, to Honeysuckle, Civic, Crown Street, Queens Wharf, and, finally, Newcastle Beach. While the sixth and final tram in the fleet is being commissioned, services will run eastbound and westbound every 10 minutes. When the fleet is fully operational, the frequency will increase to seven-and-a-half minutes, which Mr Fletcher said
was classified as a “turn-up-andgo” service. “This instils confidence in a reliable system,” he said. To ride the light rail, passengers are encouraged to use an Opal card, which guarantees multi-trip discounts. For instance, if passengers connect via heavy rail, bus or ferry, it only costs an extra 20 cents to hop on the light rail, compared to a $2.20 (adult) or $1.10 (concession) flat fee for light rail only. However, passengers can buy one-off, single trip tickets without the need for an Opal card. Services kicked off on Monday in what Mr Fletcher termed an “historic” day for the city. “The commencement of light rail makes Newcastle a truly integrated and multi-modal network,” he added. eanette John studied for years, travelled to Reggio Emilia in Italy on an early childhood education study tour and made a personal commitment to work for a non-profit organisation. It’s all come together for the centre manager at Gowrie NSW’s Mayfield Early Education and Care Centre. “My passion is learning about children,” Ms John says. “I’ve gone from Associate Diploma to Degree to Masters, and I’ve had the opportunity to visit Reggio Emilia in Italy, which is an inspirational approach to early childhood. “So, I think that’s something that drives me to want to learn
more about best practice for early childhood education. “Rather than just focusing on the fact that we’re here for working parents, I want it to be an environment where children can reach their potential and become citizens in their own right.” For more than 75 years, Gowrie NSW has greatly contributed to the richness of early and middle childhood across the state. During that time, the not-for-profit organisation has been at the forefront of providing support for children, families and communities through values of diversity and inclusion. Call for trekkers This is a challenge for the brave. Not-for-profit organisation The Umbrella Foundation is calling on participants to join its Everest Base Camp Challenge, led by Everest summiteer and Hunter resident Gavin Vickers.
Playground revamp begins Work will start this week on a $125,000 revamp of Killingworth Playground, near Barnsley. The first stage involves the demolition of the existing playground, which will then be replaced by modern, all-inclusive play equipment. “The playground will feature a range of new equipment, such as swings, wave rider, typhoon spinner and more,” Lake Macquarie council’s section manager of community assets, Brendan Callander, said. “Recreation areas and playgrounds are a central part of our community, providing places for children to play and for parents to meet and socialise with others.” The playground is expected to reopen in April, prior to the Easter holidays. A Morisset playground is also set to reopen in April after a $1.4 million upgrade, including children’s play equipment, outdoor fitness stations and new public barbecues at Bernie Goodwin Memorial Park.

news Group disappointed after early foreshore proposal A brochure that proposed parkland at Toronto Foreshore be extended to counter concerns over future growth and a lack of open space shows “why the community is so disappointed”. The Toronto Foreshore Protection Group (TFPG) was formed to oppose Lake Macquarie council’s plans for a multi-storey commercial, tourism and residential development at Bath Street. The group claimed the brochure had been recently discovered. Dated from 1980 and titled A Proposal for Discussion, it outlined a potential strategic plan for Toronto’s town centre and described the foreshore park as a narrow waterfront strip that extended from Wharf Road to Bath Street. One of three special projects identified, the foreshore park was to include paths and cycleways linking the residential precinct north of the Royal Motor Yacht Club to the town centre. TFPG spokesperson, Mel Steiner, said the brochure explained why the community believed the foreshore area to be park. He added community groups, under that
assumption, had then decided to complete voluntary Landcare improvement works on part of the land. “You can understand why the community is so disappointed when council decided last year, without community consultation, to approve expenditure of funds and prepare plans for construction of a six-storey commercial and residential development on this public foreshore land,” Mr Steiner said. “[It] not only exceeds the limits of the planning instruments, but is also contrary to both council and state planning documents for foreshore land.” The brochure also stated Toronto’s growing population would demand greater space and a more attractive environment, as well as improved and larger community facilities. Mr Steiner said TFPG had found two sites within the Toronto commercial centre, which it believed would be ideal for potential multi-storey development. He asked council to listen to the community’s concerns and to investigate a “more appropriate site”.
In response, a council spokesperson said the brochure appeared to provide ideas for a Toronto Centre Plan to prompt community input. According to the council, land in Bath Street was subsequently purchased in 1985, with resolutions and adopted planning instruments supporting development on the site in the decades since. “Council has approved development of a concept design for the Bath Street site,” the spokesperson said. “Initial studies, such as geotechnical, heritage and environmental studies, have commenced. “Information from these studies, along with feedback from initial community consultation undertaken in August and September 2018, will inform preparation of a draft foreshore master plan, in conjunction with detailed design for the development.” The spokesperson added the community would be able to provide further feedback on the proposal once preliminary master plan concepts were created. - Ben Murphy

news Jill leads the way on ovarian cancer An army of advocates. That’s what Jill Emberson wants to build as she pushes for more funds and research into ovarian cancer. The 2019 Newcastle Citizen of the Year attended a Teal Ribbon breakfast at Parliament House, Canberra, last week to mark Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. “If cancer is the most dreaded word then, for most women, ovarian is the worst adjective to put in front of it,” Ms Emberson told Newcastle Weekly. A former ABC Newcastle breakfast host, Ms Emberson was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2016 and underwent treatment, only for it to return. Regarded as a rare or less common cancer, it has a five-year survival rate of just 46%. In comparison, common cancers, such as breast and
prostate, sit at 91% and 95% respectively. According to Cancer Australia data, breast cancer received $111 million in research funding from 2014-18, while prostate cancer was handed $42 million, and ovarian cancer picked up $27 million. “Historically, most of the funding has gone to the common cancers, across the board, in Australia,” Ms Emberson said. “That leads to more research, which has a snowballing effect and you get better outcomes. “The government is taking the approach of ‘Let’s get the biggest bang for buck and solve the most common cancers’, and breast cancer is certainly the biggest. “But, now that we have survival rates at 91%, it’s time to turn the attention to cancers such as mine. “We are unable to form the army
of advocates that the bigger cancers have been able to form because we die quickly – we can’t join fundraising groups and community groups.” Ms Emberson said she was pleased to speak in front of an “unusually political” audience, which included Prime Minister Scott Morrison, in Canberra. She added her Australia Day honour in Newcastle had provided a much-needed boost in the push to raise more awareness. “[The Citizen of the Year award] certainly helped me feel good and encouraged me to go on,” she said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity in Newcastle for our community to listen up.” Teal Ribbon Day, which supports Australians living with ovarian cancer, honours those lost and raises awareness, will take place on

Volunteers urged to join in clean up Lake Macquarie residents have once again been urged to lend a hand as the annual Clean Up Australia Day rolls around. According to Lake Macquarie council, volunteers removed close to six tonnes of rubbish from schools, parks, beaches, bushland and foreshore areas throughout the city last year. The council’s sustainability engagement officer, Chris Harle, encouraged people to organise a local clean up by registering a site for Sunday 3 March. “Our residents take a great deal of pride in their parks and reserves,” she said. “Clean Up Australia Day is an opportunity for our community to come together to rid their streets, parks and waterways of rubbish.” During the past three decades, Australians have devoted more than 33 million hours towards the environment through Clean Up Australia Day and collected over 344,000 tonnes of rubbish. $6.5 million project begins Construction of Medowie’s $6.5 million Sport and Community Facility is officially under way, with the first sod turned on the development last week. The building will overlook Ferodale Oval and include meeting spaces, bistro and bar facilities, outdoor seating, a children’s playground and a bowling green. Additionally, the facility will be able to serve as an evacuation and recovery centre in times of
emergency. “We hope this design will bring all facets of the community together — there are great sporting facilities, meeting spaces for community groups, as well as room for community events or just relaxing with family and friends,” Port Stephens mayor Ryan Palmer said. “When it’s complete, Medowie will have an incredible community space for everyone to enjoy.”

Keeping physically, mentally and socially active is an important part of growing older, and the Ladies Probus Club of New Lambton has put the call out for retired women to join in their fun. A 2016 survey by Relationships Australia found that roughly 8% of over-65s experienced social
isolation, while the numbers of those experiencing loneliness significantly increased with age – from 13% of 65 to 69-year-olds to almost 20% of over-80s. Combating the social isolation that can particularly occur after retirement has spurred the club to meet several times a month, offering a variety
of activities ranging from a casual coffee to formal lunches or day trips around the Hunter, Central Coast and Sydney. Coordinator Coralie Watson said their members also recognised how important it was to enjoy exercise, scheduling scenic walks around local landmarks. “Our walks happen at a different place in Newcastle each time,” she said. “They can be coastal or rural, visiting lakes, gardens, the bush, even historical shipwrecks.” The club has almost 80 members, but Mrs Watson said there was always room for more. Trial targets muscle gains The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) has launched a new clinical trial aimed at helping over65s build muscle strength and reduce the risk of falls. The study, called STRONG, is designed for those who are at risk of developing sarcopenia, a degenerative loss of muscle mass that is associated with ageing. “The people we’re recruiting have low activity levels, poor-quality diets and are aged 65 and over, so they have a high risk of developing sarcopenia,” University of Newcastle researcher, professor Lisa Wood, said. Oscar Roberts and Charlotte Dobson, from Stockton and Catherine Hill Bay surf lifesaving clubs, took home the male and female awards last week. Hunter Surf Life Saving chief executive, Rhonda Scruton, said the quality of nominees
was very high. She added Oscar had collected for the Newcastle Permanent Christmas Toy Appeal for the past two years and tipped Charlotte to become a future leader. “It is humbling to speak with these young members and realise they care so much for the community at the age of 14 and are so proud to wear the red and yellow uniforms, work in teams, and know how to save a life already,” Ms Scruton said. “Our community is in good hands now and will be in the future. “Oscar and Charlotte come from families who are involved in surf lifesaving and, when asked who they admired the most, both said their parents.” The duo will now attend a Surf Life Saving NSW camp on 15 April for final judging, as well as a week of learning and networking, with the 20 winners from the other 10 branches across the state. Hometown heroes Merewether Surfboard Club swept aside the disappointment of last year’s defeat and the loss of two stars to injury to claim its first Australian Boardriders Battle (ABB) title at the weekend. In front of a huge home crowd at Newcastle Beach, the Merewether outfit took on Snapper Rocks Surfriders, North Shelly Boardriders and North Shore Boardriders in the nudie ABB national final. Merewether, which fell just short at the 2018 event and lost Ryan Callinan and Jackson Baker to injury, posted 36.00 points to cruise past fellow NSW team North Shelly, 32.00 points, while the two Queensland-based clubs, North Shore and Snapper Rocks, finished third and fourth respectively. Merewether’s winning squad consisted of Jesse Adam, Mike Clayton-Brown, Philippa Anderson, Mitchell Ross and Morgan Cibilic. The nudie ABB is Australia’s biggest grassroots boardriders event and involves more than 60 clubs. It took place across eight state qualifying rounds, with only 24 clubs coming together at the national final.

Ben Simmons made history as the first Australian to play in an NBA All-Star game when he took the court in Charlotte, North Carolina, this week. Raised in the Hunter Region, Simmons came off the bench and played 17 minutes, recording 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds in Team LeBron’s 178164 win over Team Giannis on Monday. Simmons had earlier become the first player to be traded under the exhibition match’s ‘Captains Pick’ format, with Milwaukee Bucks’ Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo agreeing to trade the 22-year-old to rival skipper, LeBron James, for Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook. Both Antetokounmpo and James were the top vote-getters in their respective conferences, East
and West, which allowed them to pick their teams’ starters in a draft. Simmons, who plays as a point guard for the Philadelphia 76ers, proved instrumental in a thirdquarter, 33-14 run that saw Team LeBron erase an 18-point deficit. Despite his side’s dramatic slide, Antetokounmpo topped all scorers with 38 points to go alongside five assists and 11 rebounds. Just Snoring or Obstructive Sleep Apnea? Snoring can be the fi rst warning sign of sleep apnea. Snoring occurs when your airway becomes so narrow during sleep that the air vibrates, making sound. An obstructive apnea occurs if this narrowing becomes completely closed resulting in being unable to breathe. When this happens your brain initiates a response where the body is shocked awake just enough for breathing to resume. Being deprived of oxygen and being shocked back into breathing not only disrupts sleep, but puts a lot of strain on your body. If untreated this can lead to a number of severe health consequences, including heart attacks, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Approximately 20% of women and 35% of men are affected by sleep apnea and many of these people are unaware they have the condition. Loud snoring, high blood pressure, mood swings, forgetfulness, poor concentration, fatigue, weight
gain and depression are all symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.
Diagnosing Sleep Apnea The best way to check if you’re affected by obstructive sleep apnea is asking your GP to refer you for a sleep study. Your doctor may give you a referral for a home sleep study, which is done overnight in your own home or to a Sleep Specialist for further investigation.
CPAP Treatment CPAP is the ‘gold standard’ for obstructive sleep apnea treatment. It is a non-invasive therapy where a flow of air keeps your airway from collapsing during sleep. It is one of the few medical treatments with no side effects. Results are usually instant and patients often report a complete cessation of snoring, increased daytime energy levels and improved mental wellbeing.

he Servants Quarters Tea Rooms are situated in the historic Campbell’s Store at Morpeth, where the servants of Mr and Mrs Campbell resided almost 200 years ago. Speaking to Newcastle Weekly ahead of the band’s first Australian tour, kicking off next month, guitarist Steph Paynes threw down the gauntlet. “People seeing us for the first time will probably have preconceived ideas about us,” she says.
“They might think we’re just a girl band doing covers, or that we’re kitschy or quirky because of our name, but I would urge [those people] to come along because you’re not going to get what you expect.” Established by Paynes about 14 years ago, Lez Zeppelin is a high-energy, no-holds-barred rock

Cooking with Australian Good Meat, which will bring a different artisanal flavour to the show. Primary-aged children (5 to 12) will have the chance to grab an apron and learn to cook a healthy meal while learning where food comes from. If that’s not enough, kids can get hands-on at the new Scouts activity centre, featuring wallclimbing and tightrope-walking. All the crowd favourites, from carnival rides and showbags to agricultural displays and campdrafting, will round out the three-day event, from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 March at Newcastle Showground. “The show has been a part of the region since 1902 and I will fight to the death to ensure it is around for another 100 years,” Mr Robinson adds. just have to look within. “What you keep putting into your consciousness is what will come back to you.” Personally, Little Chick has given Nanshe the motivation to be more active, including swimming, which has inspired the new collection’s turquoise hues. Rather symbiotically, Day is working on honing her connection to the environment, in particular, the delicate understorey habitat of birds and small animals. “I cast my jewellery from gumnuts and seeds so, in a way, I’m taking from nature but immortalising it,” Day says. “All the silver [I use] is recycled; we both really believe in using sustainable materials and don’t like to waste anything.” The community is welcome to attend the Little Chick relaunch. - Georgia Osland

A step closer to success First impressions can make or break an interaction, particularly at a job interview. However, for some disadvantaged women, such as those getting back on their feet after experiencing family, domestic or sexual violence, the opportunity to present well may be out of reach. Fortunately, Dress for Success
has opened its first office in Newcastle, welcoming Hunter women from today (Thursday 21 February). The organisation helps women achieve economic empowerment by providing style advice and a professional outfit suitable for a job interview. It also offers women a support
network and career development tools to help them achieve self-sufficiency. Maitland MP and Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Assault, Jenny Aitchison, joined Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp at the official opening after donating dozens of pairs of shoes. The shoes were collected by Women’s Network (Hunter NSW) and the Maitland Domestic Violence Committee during their Shoes for Thought project last November. Ms Aitchison said there was an “enormous need” for a service like Dress for Success. “Women seeking work, or entering new employment, deserve to feel confident,” she said. “The service is particularly vital for women who are disadvantaged. “The expectations of women, in terms of what they wear to work, are very high, yet many women experience situations which make it difficult to assemble a job-ready wardrobe, such as surviving family, domestic or sexual violence,
homelessness, incarceration or returning to work after having children.” Mr Crakanthorp echoed Ms Aitchison’s sentiments. “Clothes are important because, the reality is, impressions count,” he said. “But the most important thing is that women come together in a space with other supportive women. “That is the really transformative thing.” The Newcastle Dress for Success office is co-located with Max Employment on Hunter Street, Newcastle. The space was fitted out largely thanks to a $10,000 federal government grant.

A material crush Timber has become an everlasting favourite when it comes to natural elements used in bathroom design, and while concrete fi nishes dominated last year’s trends, have you ever considered combining the two? With concrete and timber leaving the construction zone to step into home design as an increasingly popular combination, mixing these materials creates a new age feel with a nostalgic foundation. The raw and industrial concrete set against warm timber offers a strikingly contemporary look. Doses of bold wallpaper Wallpaper will make a comeback in 2019, namely bold patterns, colours and even textured wallpaper. It’s a cost effective and hassle-free way to breathe new life into an outdated space. Bring the splashback to your bathroom in the form of wallpaper instead of tiles. But if you’re looking to incorporate more change within your bathroom and make an even bolder statement, consider a feature wall or lining the top third of your bathroom with a remarkable wallpaper. Container gardens Trends in gardening have taken a huge aboutturn during the last few years. Paved courtyards and balconies have become more dominant, which has ultimately increased the need for container-grown plants. Not everyone has a penchant for lowmaintenance succulents and rock, but there are alternatives. Consider the site structure because it determines the fi nished display. Is it shady or sunny? Is it elevated and prone to prevailing winds? Consider creating an orchard in pots. Fruit and vegetables don’t just look amazing in terracotta pots, they thrive. Terracotta pots give the advantage of being able to extend the pot collection at any time. It doesn’t matter if shapes and sizes and patterns are different, the colour remains neutral so that the plants are the feature, not the pots. Citrus look great standing tall amongst a group of containers in smaller sizes. The dwarf citrus are ideal, lemons and limes being particularly popular. One of the hardiest fruit trees are olives; I can’t remember when I last watered mine. Olives are fabulous trained into standards – they are quick-growing and require very little care. Plant brightly-coloured annuals such as blue lobelia or white petunias around the base to highlight the grey leaves and black olives.

Consider planting marigolds, lobelia and cosmos to create colour throughout autumn. • Roses are suffering – time to give them a summer prune and fertilise with poultry manure and mulch with sugar cane. • The soil is dry and hard. Turn over and apply mushroom compost to hold moisture. • Army grub is still a problem – don’t think the dry patches are a result of lack of rain!

MISS TEEN AUSTRALIA I travelled around America in July 2018 to represent my country. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I will never forget. My mum is my biggest supporter, I am so grateful to have her.
My favourite things MY PARTNER I have dated my partner, Nash Birch, for six years. We were high school sweethearts. He is extremely supportive of everything I do. I am very excited to see where the future takes us.
FITNESS I have always been involved in fitness, and love playing tennis, going to the gym, running, and walking along the beach. Exercise makes me feel happy and improves my wellbeing.
FAMILY I lost my Dad, Wayne, to bowel cancer when I was six-years-old. He fought the battle for three years but heartbreakingly lost his life on Father’s Day 2006. I continue to raise money for bowel cancer. Bowel cancer is preventable, beatable and treatable. With early detection and awareness, I believe one day we can find a cure.
Breanna Blick MISS TEEN AUSTRALIA 2017
Breanna Blick was crowned Miss Teen Australia in 2017. She has been raising money and awareness for bowel cancer for several years after losing her dad, Wayne, to the disease. During his life, Wayne was an active surf lifesaver and boat rower for Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club and, even while suffering from the terminal illness, would take Breanna and her sister to Nippers on Sundays. Breanna continues to be an active lifesaver with the club, while her mother, Narelle, holds the role of president. Breanna is also involved in other local charities and, due to her love of helping people, she’s currently studying to be a social worker. 62
TRAVEL I’ve always been extremely lucky to have travelled since before I could remember with my mum and dad. As I’ve grown older, I have started to travel with friends. I love exploring different cultures and trying new things.
