thursday 14 february 2019
This week... From the editor This week I’m celebrating the big twofive. Looking back at what I’ve achieved in a quarter of a century, I feel pretty chuffed. And, having already been through the rigmarole of buying my first home, perhaps my quarter-life crisis is behind me… or maybe it’s yet to come. Birthdays mean very little to some and a lot to others. While it’s true that the world keeps turning as if it’s just another day, personally I think it’s important to pause, reflect and celebrate. What you do with the other 364 days of the year (your ‘unbirthdays’ as famously coined by children’s author Lewis Carroll), however, is equally as important. Marvellous moments happen in between birthdays – don’t miss a single one of them. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, this week’s cover story is on the Cupid’s Undie Run fundraiser for a neurofibromatosis cure. The genetic disorder, which manifests itself as tumours on the nerve cells, affects as many as one in 2,500, making it more common than cystic fibrosis, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Huntington’s disease. A fun run will be held in Newcastle this Sunday 17 February as part of a nationwide campaign. Turn to page 14.

news Residents plead for waste solution Maggots, flies and the stench: Eleebana’s Michelle Shetab has the lot around her garbage bin and she believes many families are doing it tough. Lake Macquarie council will consider a report on potential ways to address the waste collection needs of residents at a meeting on Monday 25 February. The council rolled out a new three-bin system last July, which aimed to reduce the amount of annual waste sent to landfill by about 17,000 tonnes and offset increasing disposal costs. Under the Food+Garden=Green service, all food scraps and garden waste go into the household green bin to be emptied weekly. The garbage and recycling bins – red and yellow lids – are emptied on alternating fortnights. However, health and hygiene has become an issue for some residents, with dirty nappies a major source of angst amongst families. The council proposes solutions such as an ongoing supply of thicker compostable bags to all residents for free, enhanced promotion of an opt-in weekly garbage service at a cost of about $250 per year, and methods to manage summer pests.
4
Ms Shetab says, while others are seemingly happy with the system, there needs to be a compromise. “I can see people really struggling out there – you can’t just say it’s a minority,” she says. “I’d love to see the $250 weekly bin service offered free of charge to those who really need it. “I personally think the green bin is a good idea, I’m all for not filling the land. “A lot of people are happy with the new system, it’s working for them – for those people, leave them be. “[But] I personally ended up getting maggots for the first time recently and the flies I’ve got are not from my bin.” In January, the council hosted two workshops, which covered a review of the feasibility and full implications of reinstating a weekly garbage service; the costs and promotion of opt-in weekly garbage service and upsized recycling bins; managing nappies; and community engagement. Toronto mother Nicole Jurgielan says she has struggled to manage the system with a five-person household, as well as pets.

“The rubbish pile is disgusting – it stinks,” she says. “I don’t think it’s just a minority from what I’ve seen, it’s normally single couples who haven’t had a problem with the bins, but a lot of families are having trouble.” A protest has been organised outside council headquarters from 11am on Saturday 23 February. - Ben Murphy

news Act swiftly on banking commission findings: Shortland MP Federal member for Shortland, Pat Conroy, says the government should act swiftly to implement the banking royal commission’s recommendations to “change the culture” from the top down. Speaking to Newcastle Weekly last week after Commissioner Kenneth Hayne handed down his findings, Mr Conroy said it was time to address the gross misconduct identified across the banking, superannuation and financial services sectors, such as banks charging customers fees for services they’d never received. Some of these cases involved people being charged these fees even after they had died. “If someone stole your wallet on the street, they’d go to jail,” Mr Conroy said. “Nothing will change until we see bankers go to jail [for crimes].” Mr Conroy, who sat on the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics during its inquiry into the banks in 2016, said the royal commission also highlighted a “lack of performance” by the Australian Securities

& Investments Commission (ASIC) – the country’s corporate, markets and financial services regulator. “We’ve seen a light-touch approach, where ASIC will look to negotiate and settle rather than prosecute [institutions that have done the wrong thing],” he said. “We need to change their culture to change the banks. “It also raises the question: How do we give customers the information and power to be on relatively equal footing with bankers?” Of particular concern to some is the impact of the royal commission on home loan applications and approvals. While banks have, generally speaking, tightened their lending criteria whilst under the microscope, perhaps the biggest measurable change, if implemented, in this arena would be to the way mortgage brokers operate. Commissioner Hayne recommended a “steady but deliberate” shift from a lender-pays to a
borrower-pays commission scheme, whereby the prospective homeowner would foot the mortgage broker’s commission, not the bank. The aim of this would be to disincentivise brokers from selling customers products that might not be in their best interests, purely to leverage a higher commission. “Of course, good mortgage brokers will do both [look after themselves and their customers] because they care about staying in business, but that’s not always the case,” Mr Conroy added. Go to financialservices.royalcommission. gov.au to read the full report containing all 76 of Commissioner Hayne’s recommendations. - Georgia Osland

Parking study seeks feedback A parking study will seek feedback on potential solutions for Central Maitland. Maitland council has engaged GTA Consultants to undertake the study to understand the overall position on parking and to help identify opportunities that may be considered in the future. “Whether you live in Central Maitland, work in Central Maitland, or you’re a customer or visitor to the area, we want to hear from you during this engagement phase of the project,” the council’s manager of engineering and design, Kevin Stein, said. “We are also especially interested in hearing from business owners and managers and will be targeting them directly during the engagement.” In December, the council voted
unanimously to acknowledge hundreds of signatures on a petition, which sought a resolution to “parking problems” in the area and requested the reservation of at least 20 twohour spaces near the court house. The feedback was passed on to the study consultants. The council had previously decided in 2017 to review parking in the CBD once The Levee and Green Hills developments were completed. Residents can get involved in the parking study through an online survey on the council’s website by Monday 18 February. Pop-up stations will also be available on Tuesday 19 February at Pender Place between 10am and noon, and Maitland library from 1pm to 3pm.

news Council launches new logo
Newcastle council’s new corporate logo.
Newcastle council says its new corporate logo reflects the city’s revitalisation and ensures Novocastrians are aware of the assets they collectively own. Research undertaken last year reportedly found many Novocastrians did not realise that Blackbutt Reserve, Fort Scratchley, the Civic Theatre, Newcastle Museum or the Newcastle Art Gallery were among the council’s facilities. Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said an updated, more contemporary logo was needed, a quarter of a century after the Civic Fountain motif replaced a coat of arms bearing two seagulls. The council stated a multicoloured ‘N’, the main feature of the logo, was inspired by the emergence of a new city and was designed to promote its growing
appeal to tourists. Its design cost about $50,000. “As a progressive, dynamic and rapidly changing city, it was important that we made this change to complement Newcastle’s transformation from a regional town into a smart, liveable and sustainable global city,” Cr Nelmes said. “When our community doesn’t recognise the services or facilities their local council provides, it’s clear that the old approach of separating council’s services and logos for each asset was not optimal. “Under the new ‘N’, we are united with a consistent and recognisable symbol.” The council stated that, with the foundation design work completed, it could start a 12-month roll out. It plans to initially replace existing signage on big-ticket items, such as prominent sites and cultural facilities, before progressively upgrading other signage when it was due for replacement under the council’s routine signage renewal work. The timing of the brand refresh coincides with the council’s administrative move from three separate Civic precinct buildings to a single office block in the city’s new CBD in Newcastle West.

Fraud, scam safety workshops Free fraud and scam safety workshops will be provided for Lake Macquarie seniors during the next three months. Mayor Kay Fraser said identifying email and online scams was often difficult, particularly when they looked legitimate. “Some of the more common scams to look out for include online dating and romance, investment opportunities, prizes or lotto winnings, and door-to-door sales,” she said. Tips to protect yourself from
identity theft include creating strong passwords, regularly checking account statements for unusual activity, and not sharing personal information if unsure about the legitimacy of the request. Workshops for over-55s will take place on 22 February, 22 March and 12 April. For more information, or to book, visit lakemac.com.au/over55s or phone the council on 4921 0333. Lake Macquarie Business Hub discusses:
Life after separation
CATHERINE HENRY LAWYERS – FAMILY LAW Life after separation…reflections of a lawyer Separation can be a traumatic event in a person’s life, emotionally and financially. An important, but often daunting, step in moving forward with your life is sorting out a property settlement with your former partner or spouse. We’re here to make that process easier for you. We will work with you to get together a list of assets and debts and guide you through the process of gathering your financial information (such as appraisals or valuation of the home, up-to-date bank and super statements). We will then assess what is an appropriate division of the assets by looking at the contributions you have both made to the relationship and what your needs are into the future.
We recommend you do the following soon after separation: • Get advice from an experienced, specialist family law lawyer; • Exchange financial details with your former partner or spouse; • Make a realistic settlement proposal; • Go to mediation to resolve the matter rather than going to court; • Document the agreement reached (court orders or Financial Agreement); and • Update your Will, Power of Attorney and Appointment of Enduring Guardian. Where appropriate, we will work with other professionals, such as accountants and financial planners, to help you prepare for life after the property settlement. For information, contact Alan Wright (Accredited Specialist in Family Law since 1997), Ashlea Taylor or Liza Stewart and for information regarding Wills contact Larissa Howard or Monique Smiles at Catherine Henry Lawyers on 4929 3995.
BMK FINANCIAL SERVICES – FINANCIAL ADVICE Life after separation…reflections of a Financial Planner Separation and family breakdown is without doubt a major life-changing event. It not only affects the individuals concerned, it can affect the children and your extended family. It’s emotional, confusing, and sad for all involved. One of the major causes of angst in a separation can be the property settlement, and the fear and anxiety the loss of assets can cause to everyone concerned.
beneficial to you at this point in your life (e.g. providing a home for children may be your numberone goal). How can you get what you need to move forward? • Describing the process for separation of superannuation or investment assets and how that may affect your future financial position. • Most importantly we can give either side peace of mind by explaining what life after separation may look like from a financial perspective and provide you a sensible path forward (i.e. financial plan) for your future as a single person, or single parent.
A Financial Planner is able to help here in many ways, including:
Being part of a local business hub gives us the added advantage of being able to communicate readily with your Solicitor, Accountant, and Loan Broker to make sure that all your needs will be met during and after the separation.
• Gathering together your financial details and explaining how to value each component in a proposed settlement. This can often be difficult if only one partner has been involved with particular assets (e.g. A business or a share portfolio). We can liaise on your behalf with your accountant. • Helping you to define what assets are most
Separation doesn’t need to be a time of anxiety and fear. BMK Financial Services can help you through this challenging time holding your hand all the way with other local professionals that care about you and your family’s future. Call Brad now on 0423 621 120 or email:

TENTH AVENUE ACCOUNTING – ACCOUNTING Life after separation‌reflections of
an Accountant
The financial ramifications for anyone separating after many years can be significant. If business and investment assets are involved, the complexity and often emotional strain of separation can be even more taxing on business owners and investors. Separation can also have the effect of causing significant damage to the ongoing operation of even the most successful businesses. For these reasons, independent accounting advice can provide both sides of the separation with a valuable unbiased insight to the options regarding the separation of assets and income producing businesses. An accountant can help to:
• Provide advice to manage potential tax consequences on the division of assets; and • Recommend the appropriate ownership and investment structures moving forward such as superannuation, trusts and companies. Tenth Avenue Accountants offers a free, one-hour consultation for anyone considering or currently going through separation to discuss the accounting and tax implications they face. As a member of the Lake Macquarie Business Hub, we can leverage our connection with Lawyers, Financial Planners and Mortgage Brokers to provide a clear picture of what separation will involve and how you will be situated afterwards. LAKE MACQUARIE FINANCIAL PLANNING – LENDING Life after separation‌reflections of a mortgage broker It is very common for people facing life after a relationship breakdown to want to consider all the options for their future. In particular, it is common that people wish to consider whether it is viable for one of the partners to retain the family home and usually, this will mean consideration of a mortgage. A mortgage broker can support this process by: • Supporting the assessment of whether a loan is affordable and whether this can be demonstrated to a financial institution; • Supporting the assessment of whether any additional funds required to make a financial settlement with a former partner is affordable; • Considering whether consolidating your loans into a single mortgage is an appropriate strategy; • Considering what impact the valuation of the
property might have on the availability of any new borrowings; • Assessing the lending policies of a panel of financial institutions - an existing lender may not be the best option for your new situation; and • Submitting new applications and supporting information required for existing loans to be transferred to a single borrower name. Of course, it helps when your mortgage broker is open to communicating with your Solicitor and Financial Planner to ensure that the final position meets all of your goals.

news Crowd protests seismic testing Hundreds of people have rallied in Civic Park to send a message that the coastline of Newcastle and NSW is off-limits to fossil fuel extraction. The federal government’s Department of Industry, Innovation and Science hosted a roundtable forum at Newcastle City Hall last week. The meeting outlined seismic testing, the oil and gas exploration process, and oil spill modelling, before a separate community drop-in session took place in the afternoon. In April 2018, gas company Asset Energy conducted 2D seismic testing – continuous airgun blasts into the ocean floor every few seconds for days or weeks on end – near Newcastle. It now plans to undergo more extensive, 3D seismic surveys over about 500 square kilometres to create an image of what is underneath and potentially find the best drilling targets for an oil or gas field. Some environmentalists and scientists claim seismic testing can injure and deafen marine life

and cause damage to the ecosystem, while it also negatively affects fisheries and tourism industries. Save Our Coast founder, Natasha Deen, says the community’s concerns have so far been ignored. “This plan for seismic testing and offshore oil and gas is being imposed on us and our coast by the federal government without
adequate community consultation and with apparent disregard of the councils’ and the state government’s opposition to this flawed plan,” she says. “To continue to subject our marine animals to this torment, and our living ocean to this harm from seismic testing, is unconscionable.” The regulator responsible for the approval of

offshore oil and gas, the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA), attended the meeting in Newcastle. A spokesperson stated the regulator was aware of Asset Energy’s intention to conduct further surveys, but added it had not been advised of any timeframes. “NOPSEMA’s assessment process commences once a titleholder submits an environment plan for proposed activity,” the spokesperson tells Newcastle Weekly. In late 2017, federal Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Matt Canavan, announced transparency reforms to the offshore regulatory approvals process. This included the publication of environmental plans prior to their assessment by NOPSEMA, a public comment period, and the
chance for interested parties to submit their concerns directly to NOPSEMA. The reforms will reportedly be introduced later this year. “While we have no timeframe on a possible further seismic survey to be conducted by Asset, should they submit their environment plan after the introduction of the reforms, then it would be subject to publication and a public comment period,” the NOPSEMA spokesperson adds. New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern banned future offshore oil and gas exploration last April, while, a year earlier, the Obama administration blocked seismic surveys in the Atlantic Ocean. However, current US president Donald Trump later granted permission for five companies to conduct testing off the country’s east coast. - Ben Murphy

The genetic disorder causes tumours to form on any one of the billions of nerve cells in a child’s body, including the brain and spine. It is painful, progressive, unpredictable and, sadly, it can be terminal. There is no cure. Rachel suspected there was something wrong when Bella was only six weeks old. Her seemingly innocent birthmarks – termed café au lait spots – were multiplying rapidly. Rachel learned at a peadiatrician appointment that these spots were a marker for the genetic disorder, with which Bella was formally diagnosed five months later at the neurogenetics clinic at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. She was told to return every year thereafter so a
team of specialists could monitor Bella, which soon turned into six-monthly check-ups. Before she was three, doctors found a tumour on Bella’s C4 vertebrae, compressing her spine, and a number of hyperintensities on her brain that could evolve into tumours at any time. “That’s one of the most frustrating things as an NF parent, is the watching and waiting,” Rachel told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s like a ticking time bomb.” Nowadays, doctors continue to monitor Bella’s tumour (which, in cases of NF, often prove resistant to traditional cancer treatment), and hope they don’t have to operate before she becomes a teenager. Rachel said the tumour could “safely” grow another centimetre before that became a reality. “Surgery still carries the risk of paralysis and death, but if we do nothing, we’ve got the same risk,” she said. Amidst all this, Rachel quit her job to work with the Children’s Tumour Foundation of Australia, an organisation dedicated to funding research for an NF cure. Part of her role is to campaign manage the

news Scouts lead the way Twelve Kurri Kurri Scouts have embarked on a rehabilitation project at Log of Knowledge Park. The Junior Landcare Warriors will restore a raised patch of woodland called ‘The Mound’ and bring it back to its natural vegetation and associated habitat values. The Scouts attended their first meeting at the park last week. Cessnock council’s biosecurity weeds team, Barry Shepherd and Maria Edmonds, as well as Landcare’s Stacy Mail, took them on a walk and talk to educate them about the site and what they could achieve. Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent reserved special praise for the Scouts’ efforts. “It’s great to see young people
who are enthusiastic about their local environment and I look forward to following the Warriors as they carry out this project,” he said. The council’s weeds team are eager to see the group tackle a few of the park’s environmental pests. These include Asparagus Fern, Bridal Creeper, Lantana, African Olive, Tecoma, Camphor Laurel, Pittosporum undulatum, and a number of other noxious plants. Any young person keen to join in can contact Robert Martin via rlbkmartin@bigpond.com

The kids tackle Newcastle Knights star Kalyn Ponga.
Ponga tackles parental duties Kalyn Ponga has some friendly advice for kids: be nice to your parents. The Newcastle Knights star took part in a fun experiment that compared how many calories a stay-at-home parent burned per day compared to a professional athlete. He was left in charge of four
children and a dog while a sports dietitian and camera crew tracked him performing normal parental duties. These included making breakfast, cleaning the house, changing nappies, doing laundry, shopping for groceries, and taking the kids to the playground.
A device monitored his energy levels and measured his steps. Ponga said the challenge was exhausting, but also eye-opening. “I’d like to think I’m quite physically fit, but the challenge that a parent faces through their daily chores were actually harder than I expected,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “The hardest thing for me was actually folding a pram – I couldn’t work it out, it was so hard. “Cleaning, fixing breakfast, and doing the laundry were also equally as difficult.” The results showed Ponga burned 1,988 calories over the day as a parent, compared to about 680 calories in an 80-minute professional rugby league game. Ponga was confident of winning prior to the challenge but, soon after it had finished, said he would not dispute the findings. The 20-year-old added it gave him a newfound respect for what
his, and many other, parents did each day. “As a footy player, we’re on the field for 80 minutes and we can put our boots straight up afterwards,” he said. “As a parent, it’s a 24/7 gig and it’s not just the physical but the mental element that can really drain you.” Ponga said he had another “10 or 20 years” before he would start thinking of kids again and was relieved to return to training with the Knights. “I’m excited to be in the camp for a while and then, after that, it’s into trials,” he said. “It’s a good way to wrap up twoand-a-half months of preseason training. “The vibe is really good, and I think everyone’s feeling excited to get into the season.” The Stay at Home Athlete experiment was conducted by V8 Juice. - Ben Murphy

Rebuilt boat harbour opens Stockton Boat Harbour has reopened with 26 new berths to provide safer and more efficient access to Newcastle’s waterways. Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, announced the $4.43 million project’s completion last week. He said the upgrade was a win for fishers and recreational boaters. “The rebuild of Stockton Boat Harbour was based on community feedback about the old facility, and it was clear that a rebuild was necessary for the safety of everyone who uses it,” he said. “There were 18 active berths at the time of the closure of the old harbour – many were deemed dangerous. “The new harbour includes 26 high-quality berths, providing safer access to, and from, the harbour.”

Sailor lines up harbour race Lake Macquarie sailor Kyle Langford will be the Australian SailGP team’s “throttle man” when its F50 catamaran hits Sydney Harbour this weekend for a new international league that has been dubbed F1 on water. Australia is set to take on the United States, Great Britain, China, Japan and France for a $1 million prize in the inaugural Sydney SailGP – a race in which some of the fastest boats in the world are tipped to reach speeds of up to 100 kilometres, or about 50 knots, per hour. Langford will compete alongside skipper and Olympic gold medallist, Tom Slingsby, grinder and Australia’s most successful Ironman, Ky Hurst, Sam Newton, and flight controller Jason Waterhouse. The team first tested the F50 catamaran’s capabilities off the coast of New Zealand’s Northland region, while Langford says practice sessions on the harbour have been intense. “It’s a really confined space on the harbour and, going at this speed, you eat up the water really quickly,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “We reached a top speed of 49.7 knots in New Zealand. “That was pretty cool so, with a decent sea breeze on the harbour, we are hoping that we can reach
50 [knots].” Langford has built an impressive resume. He won the America’s Cup with Oracle Team USA in 2013, came third with Team Brunel in the Volvo Ocean Race campaign, and competed in two Extreme Sailing Series. The 29-year-old, who will perform the role of wing trimmer for the Australian squad, says he’s excited about the chance to represent his country. “A wing trimmer is the power source to the boat, basically a throttle man,” he says. “It’s important not to sail too great a distance, so I monitor the speed and angle so we can get around the course as quickly as possible. “It will be really nice to race in Sydney – I’ve done the Sydney to Hobart but, apart from that, I haven’t done many races in Australia.” The SailGP Sydney event will take place from 4pm to 6pm on Friday 15 February and 3pm to 5pm on Saturday 16 February. Each team will compete in fleet races, culminating in the top two squads racing for a place on the winner’s podium in a match race on Saturday afternoon. The league then moves on to San Francisco in early May. - Ben Murphy

Rovers add to accolades Lochinvar Rovers has finished runner-up in the Asian Football Confederations (AFC) Awards in the Best Grassroots Club category. The club is overwhelmed by the announcement after a stellar year of growth and success in 2018. This included being handed Hunter Valley Football’s Club of the Year and Northern NSW Football Newcastle Permanent Club of the Year. It also became the first club in the country to achieve Level 3 Accreditation in Football Federation Australia’s National Club Accreditation Scheme. Club secretary Lisa Duhig said season 2018 was an accumulation of hard work by its 82-strong volunteer and support network. “Community football clubs are only as strong as the volunteers behind them,” she said. “We’re extremely lucky to have a hard-working, cohesive team of volunteers who work very hard behind the scenes to make our club as welcoming and inclusive as it is.” The AFC Awards took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Lochinvar was nominated for the newly-introduced award, pitting them against hundreds, if not thousands, of other grassroots clubs throughout Asia and Australia.

at Redhead Beach, the competition got underway again on Sunday but was shifted to Catherine Hill Bay after a strong southerly front moved through the region in the midmorning. In the men’s Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) 1000 event, Tancred, an Avoca local, tore through the field, posting excellent scores all event. It was no different in the final as he threw down a 15.25, out of a possible 20, two-wave combination. Fellow finalists Alister Reginato, Tane Bowden and Jagger Bartholomew put on a great chase, but couldn’t catch a rampaging Tancred, who was surfing in his fourth final from five events. In the women’s JQS, Shelly Beach’s Picklum made it a double for the Central Coast. After a tussle for the top spot with Californian standout Alyssa Spencer, Picklum was able to run away with her second JQS victory for 2019. Up next on the Surfest schedule is the Orica Teams Challenge, which will take place at Stockton Beach from 23 to 24 February.

Peanut butter chocolate pudding This is an edited extract from 15 Minute Vegan on a Budget by Katy Beskow, published by Hardie Grant Books, RRP $29.99 and is available in stores nationally. Photographer: Dan Jones Serves: 4 (generously) For the peanut butter filling 3 rounded Tbsp smooth peanut butter 100ml (scant ½ cup) hot water For the chocolate pudding 4 Tbsp self-raising flour 2 Tbsp cocoa powder 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
Date night desserts Bring date night to a sweet end with a dessert that’s perfect for sharing with a special someone. NW shares two date night desserts with something for everyone.
2 Tbsp sunflower oil Start by making the peanut butter filling. Use a fork to whisk together the peanut butter and hot water until combined and smooth. For the chocolate pudding, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, and sugar in a small, heatproof bowl. Spoon in the oil with 6 tablespoons of cold water and stir until combined.
Romanian raspberry buttermilk tart
Spoon out 1 rounded tablespoon of the cake mixture and pour the peanut butter filling into the resultant hole.
This is an edited extract from Black Sea by Caroline Eden, published by Quadrille Books, RRP $39.99 and is available in stores nationally. Photographer: Ola O Smit 2018
Smooth over the removed cake mixture, covering any visible peanut butter.
Serves: 6-8
Preheat the oven to 180°C. In the bowl of a food processor, combine the flour, ground almonds and diced butter. Process until you have fine crumbs, then add the sugar and mix briefly again.
For the pastry
Next, add the egg yolk and water and pulse until you have something resembling wet sand. Take the mixture and knead gently on a lightly-floured surface for 2 minutes, until you have a dough. Then chill it in the fridge, wrapped in cling film, for at least 30 minutes.
200g (1½ cups) plain flour, plus extra for dusting 20g (scant ¼ cup) ground almonds 110g (½ cup) cold unsalted butter, diced 50g (scant ¼ cup) caster sugar 1 egg yolk 1 Tbsp cold water
For the buttermilk filling 284ml (scant 1¼ cups) buttermilk 3 large egg yolks 60g (5 Tbsp) soft brown sugar Seeds scraped from 1 vanilla pod 270g raspberries Sprig of mint, to garnish (optional)
Cook in an 850W microwave for 3 minutes, then allow to stand for 1 minute. Serve hot with a generous scoop of vegan ice cream.
Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to fit a 23cm loose-based tart tin, leaving at least a spare 2.5cm, in case of shrinkage. (The dough is really delicate, so if you struggle rolling it out, try flouring a sheet of baking paper and rolling out on that and then lifting and lowering the rolled out pastry into the tin that way.) Prick the base with a fork to avoid air bubbles. Line the pastry case with baking parchment and fill with baking beans/dried chickpeas and blind bake for 15 minutes before removing the parchment and beans and cooking for a further 10 minutes or until golden. Once out of the oven, run a sharp knife along the edge, trimming the excess if it didn’t fall off on its own during the bake. For the filling, very gently heat the buttermilk until warm, taking good care that it doesn’t boil or it will curdle. Next, quickly whisk the egg yolks, sugar and vanilla with the warm buttermilk. Place your raspberries in the tart and slowly pour the filling over. Bake for around 30–40 minutes until the filling is golden and cooked through. Serve cool, with the fresh mint sprig placed in the centre of the tart, if you like. 25

Former University of Newcastle student turned Aussie author, Sandie Docker.
Strength in community Aussie author Sandie Docker admits she “puts [her] heroines through a fair bit”. One of her most recently penned characters, Nicole, is no different. Haunted by a traumatic past, Nicole flocks to Rosella Cove to try and rebuild her life in Docker’s second novel, The Cottage at Rosella Cove. Docker deftly describes a woman struggling in the aftermath of an abusive relationship – something that 23% of Australian women have experienced. The resulting trauma upends Nicole’s life, as she is forced to reevaluate everything she thought she knew. Then, she meets Charlie. An elderly hermit, Charlie harbours many secrets, including one that has consumed his life.
As their lives intertwine, and an unexpected friendship develops, they must confront the pain that torments them so they can find the life and family they were meant for. “I had this image of Nicole and Charlie sitting together in front of a whitewashed wall, and [the story] blossomed from there,” Docker told Newcastle Weekly whilst on a book tour in Newcastle, where she attended university. “I don’t plan my novels, they reveal themselves to me as I write. “What I hope readers take away from [the book] is that if you surround yourself with good people, you can get through anything.” The incredibly heartwarming and poignant novel is not the last we will see of Docker, who is contracted to publishers Penguin Random House for another two books, following the overwhelming success of her debut novel, The Kookaburra Creek Café. Her next release, titled The Banksia Bay Beach Shack, will continue the quintessential Australian themes of community and place. Mullet maestros to vie for crown The inaugural event spread like wildfire from Kurri Kurri to Russia. Mullet maestros will get another crack at the title during a celebration of the iconic 1980s hairstyle at the Chelmsford Hotel, Kurri Kurri, on Saturday 23 February. Hotelier and Mulletfest organiser Laura Johnson said what started out as an idea over drinks quickly became a runaway success. “It was designed to become a tourist attraction for the town, to encourage people to come along and see what Kurri Kurri has to offer,” she told Newcastle Weekly. “We’re really excited by the support of local businesses, and hotels and motels here are booked out. “A lot of people who came to
see our town of murals are coming back again. “There will be a television crew flying in from Croatia for a documentary on festivals around the globe, and we’ll have camera crews and journalists coming from Germany and France too.” Mulletfest will honour the best cuts in various categories, including everyday, grubby, ranga (red hair), vintage, extreme, international and junior. All competition entrants are judged on their haircut, overall presentation and stage presence. Ms Johnson added Golden Guitar winner, Lyn Bowtell, helped write a song about Mulletfest called Party at the Back. It was recorded and produced by renowned Hillbilly Hut studio

owner Simon Johnson. All proceeds from the song, which organisers hope to release prior to the event, will go to the Mark Hughes Foundation. “Mark is obviously a Kurri boy, but we also have some close family friends who are struggling with brain cancer, so we wanted to help them,” Ms Johnson said. “It’s super important that we put money into research, but Mark’s
foundation is also helping families today as well.” A Mulletfest warm-up party is planned for the day before the big event – Friday 22 February – at the hotel. Festivities will then kick off at 10am on Saturday. Entries for this year’s event close today (Thursday 14 February). Go to mulletfest.com.au for more information or to register. - Ben Murphy

Linen lowdown We can’t get enough of linen this season! Cool, relaxed and comfortable, linen is the ultimate summer textile for a natural look. Bedding brand Bed Threads gave us the linen lowdown: 1.
2.
Highly absorbent: Due to its molecular structure, linen can absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp. It allows more airflow and is less likely to cling to the skin. Perspiration is absorbed and wicked away from the skin and quickly evaporates. Temperature-regulating: On a hot and muggy summer night or a freezing winter morning, linen regulates the skin-air heat exchange like no other fabric. It also gets softer with each wash.
3.
French linen quilt cover set $259.95 QB bambury.com.au
Hypo-allergenic: Linen sheets are a wonderful option for those with skin disorders or sensitivities, and create a healthy microclimate for the skin.
Flip for more!
4.
Strong: Linen is substantially stronger than cotton; it is the world’s strongest fibre. Properly cared for, it can last for decades.
5.
Resistant: Linen is resistant to bacteria, fungus, dust mites and is naturally insect-repellent.
6.
Repellent: It’s lint-free, dirtrepellent and anti-static, and can even help soften and preserve the skin due to its natural PH balance.
7.
Historical: Linen is one of the oldest known fibres; the linen industry was established by the ancient Egyptians.
8.
Cheap massage: Strangely enough, linen actually gives you a bit of a light massage as you sleep due to the microscopic “breaks” throughout the textured fabric.
9.
Comfortable: Linen is super comfortable and soft!

Today, parents and even pet owners are worried about plants that might be toxic to their loved ones. Several years ago, when my granddaughter Clare and I were walking, she picked up a pretty berry that resembled a cherry. The fruit had fallen from a Toxicophlia, which, unfortunately, is planted where it is easily accessible by children. Fortunately, I was able to recognise this highly poisonous berry and explain to Clare that it would make her ill. Education and common sense are the best protection against plant poisoning. Teaching children not to pick or eat dangerous plants is more important than removing them. Keep in mind that, at some stage, they will visit a friend or grandma, who certainly won’t have removed every risky plant. Children most at risk would be

1. Know the signs of subsidence Identify the signs of subsidence early and act without delay. Every home is different, and the signs may not be immediately obvious, so it helps to know what to look for. Sinking or sloping floors, cracks in walls, paths and driveways may be the first signs of structural issues caused by subsidence. Windows and doors becoming jammed or misaligned, skirting boards separating from the wall or the formation of puddles around the perimeter of your home may also indicate foundation ground issues. 2. When to worry about cracks in walls While smaller hairline cracks in walls are common and not usually cause for concern, large cracks may appear because the property’s foundation has shrunk or lost its strength, causing all or a part of a building to sink. Problematic wall cracks typically start at windows, doorways or corners of buildings, and are often zig-zag/stepped cracks in brickwork, which usually
follow the mortar lines. They are typically wider than 5mm or big enough to insert your little finger into. 3. Be aware of soil conditions beneath your home Soil types commonly encountered in residential areas include reactive clay, sand and silt, and organic soils. Each has different characteristics; for example, clay soil can shrink, or crack and shift during hot weather, and then expand during wetter seasons. 4. Consider the different solutions available Modern remediation solutions can be applied with minimal impact. They are also noninvasive, fast and cost effective when compared to traditional underpinning methods, with homes often re-levelled within a day, without any need for occupants to vacate the property or move furniture. 5. Always seek expert advice If signs of subsidence have appeared, consult structural and geotechnical engineers or ground engineering experts.

PICK OF THE WEEK 12 Years A Slave
10 Cloverfield Lane
Friday, SBS, 8.30pm, MA15+ (2013) This moving tale about slavery – based on a true story – scooped Best Picture at the 2014 Oscars, and it’s easy to see why. Chiwetel Ejiofor (pictured) is heartbreaking as Solomon Northup, a family man living in New York in 1841, who is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Stripped of his life and freedom, he endures years of brutality from myriad people who doggedly believe they are only exercising their rights. It’s a gruelling experience in which the historical facts speak for themselves, but one that rewards you at the end.
Friday
Saturday, PRIME7, 9.30pm, M (2016) The “blood relative” of Cloverfield (2008), this flick doesn’t feature a computer-generated monster. Taking place mostly in an underground bunker, a woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, pictured, Scott Pilgrim vs The World) wakes after a car accident in the confined space, with two men present. John Goodman, the villian of the flick, insists he saved her life after a chemical attack ravaged Earth, and they are the only survivors. Confused, Winstead decides she must escape, but how and what lies outside?
Inception
Friday, 7MATE, 8.30pm, M (2010) Inventive filmmaker Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight) combines the mind-bending concepts of The Matrix with the heart-stopping action of the Bourne movies to create this astounding sci-fi thriller. Set in a world where it is possible to enter the human mind by invading a person’s dreams, it stars Leonardo DiCaprio (pictured)as dream extractor Dom Cobb, who specialises in subconscious security, but who also steals from his clients. After receiving an offer too good to refuse from the businessman Saito (Ken Watanabe), Dom sets about trying to plant an idea into a man’s (Cillian Murphy) mind, which will wreak havoc on his father’s corporation.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
You’re in a health-conscious mood and will enjoy wandering around the shops looking for products that make you look and feel good. If you’re really inspired, you might splash out on an alternative health therapy or treatment that’s your idea of heaven – such as a massage or yoga classes.
The planets are putting you in a fantastic mood and making you feel much more positive than you have for some time. Right now you feel that anything is possible and you’re setting yourself some enjoyable challenges. It will be a fun time, although you could go completely over the top.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
You’re intrigued by the interesting twists and turns that someone’s mind takes this week. They’re being very inventive and unusual and it’s a got you intrigued. Mind you, you’ll also have some clever ideas, particularly if you’re trying to find ways to solve a problem that’s cropped up recently.
Your thoughts and feelings are operating in tandem, particularly when it comes to your finances. As a result, you could get slightly worked up about things that would normally not bother you. A conversation with someone close could head in directions that are usually too sensitive but which feel right to discuss.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE You more than live up to your reputation of being clever. You’re being absolutely brilliant and you’ll come up with some really good ideas. Some of these may be a little far-fetched or possibly overly-ambitious, but that doesn’t mean you should abandon them.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Mercury is sauntering through Pisces, improving your relationships by creating a greater sense of harmony than usual. Enjoy this easygoing phase whilst it lasts! This is a golden opportunity to put your thoughts across and get involved in discussions
and negotiations both at home and at work.
connected with your past.
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
Mercury is making you incisive and articulate. You won’t mince your words when you feel strongly about something, but try not to be unduly harsh or critical because you could end up hurting others without realising it. This is the ideal time to update your technology or purchase a new car.
You’re often renowned for your modesty, Libra, but it seems to have vanished, leaving you eager to grab everything that is coming your way. You’re in no mood to stint yourself, whether that’s with people, enjoyment or love. All the same, you may have to exercise a little moderation!
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV Your idea of heaven this month is to go shopping or have a change of scene – or both! You’ll soon get bored if you have to spend too long in one place or doing one thing, so you need a little variety at this time.
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC A loved one needs very careful handling this week; they’re taking everything very much to heart, making you feel you’ve got to choose your words wisely to avoid upsetting them. It’s possible you’re also feeling sensitive, particularly when dealing with family matters or anything
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB There’s a chance that you could be drawn into a secret liaison at this time, even if it’s against your better judgment. All the same, Aquarius, this could turn out to be a very unwise move, because your heart might be broken or you could be caught out or both.
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR With Mercury in Pisces, it’s a great time for taking part in discussions and interviews, although you will have to remember to shut up every now and then and let others get a word in edgeways. You are truly going to be in an extrovert and exuberant mood.

Lights, camera, action! Freddie is the star this year. It’s his time to shine and be himself. He must individualise and hold fast to his own ideas. This is his year to be independent and to listen to his own counsel; he must risk putting himself first and go forward. Other people and things can wait. It’s time for Freddie to make the changes he has long been contemplating by promoting his ideas wisely and widely or working hard to improve what he already has.

FOOD I do love to eat out. I can be painful, however, when it comes to choosing where and what to eat!
My favourite things
RUBY Ruby, my Labradoodle, is almost eight. A dog is a (wo)man’s best friend!
COASTAL WALKS My partner loves the outdoors and camping. I meet him halfway with long coastal walks, which we ‘both’ love!
Julie Wicks
GENERAL MANAGER REVENUE, FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNICATION, LIFELINE
You can take the girl out of the country, but not the country out of the girl! This sums up Julie Wicks perfectly who, as a proud country girl born in Denman, and with a passion for connecting with others, made the move to work in the Lower Hunter in 2009. Since then, Julie has built a solid history of engaging with both organisations and leaders, having worked across Newcastle and the Hunter, especially with local business chambers Most importantly, though, Julie is a passionate ambassador for Lifeline. She has been a volunteer member of their Newcastle team, playing an active role in growing their brand and supporting local services in the region. Julie looks forward to continuing to build strong, local connections within the communities that Lifeline serves and will be in both the Newcastle and Central Coast offices regularly.
MY CHILDREN Cliché perhaps, but these young men have been my purpose – parenting can often be breathtaking and eye-rolling, then there’s the precipice of age and you fall in love all over again with young adults.
TRAVEL Growing up on a dairy farm possibly ignited my desire to travel. I was 19 when I first saw the Colosseum and it was surreal!

FLORIBUNDA: from the collection 9 February - 28 April 2019 An enduring theme for artists of all eras and genres; the depiction of the floral in art has proved perennial. This exhibition, drawn exclusively from the Newcastle Art Gallery collection, features diverse works of art dating from the 1800s to the current day, including new acquisitions on display for the first time.
