This week... From the editor Have you, like so many others recently, Marie Kondo'd your house? If you don't know who (or what) I'm talking about, I'll assume you haven't yet Netflix-binged the series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, or read the book that predates it, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. The Japanese woman is known for her simple, yet remarkable method of decluttering, organising and storing everything in the home, from clothing to those pesky miscellaneous items in the bottom kitchen drawer. She posits we should keep only those items that "spark joy" for us. Is it beautiful or functional? If the answer is no, then part ways with a simple "thank you". Once any reluctance to let go of material items that otherwise have no emotional attachment has been overcome, the people featured in the TV series spruik boundless benefits, from strengthened relationships to less stress and a clearer mindset. It truly is magic. Kondo's aim is not to tell people what they should and shouldn't throw away, and in fact she acknowledges that some items have sentimental value; but rather, encourage us to think about creating a space that reflects the life we envision for ourselves, and be mindful about accumulating stuff in the first place.

news Full Monty wedding for charity They say a wedding is one of the happiest days in a person’s life. Monty King knows this all too well, having married more than 230 couples. Then he met Monty Haron, a Camp Quality volunteer who has seen the positive impact that days spent away from home can have on kids going through cancer treatment. “We were on a Newcastle celebrant Facebook group and I saw Monty’s name pop up and thought, ‘That’s a fairly low-percentage play that there’d be two blokes in Newcastle named Monty who are celebrants,’” Mr King recalled. “We struck up a bit of a friendship and I messaged him and said: ‘We should do a wedding together, how funny would that be if someone was married by two Montys?’ During their conversations, it was decided that the wedding should benefit a charity. Mr Haron quickly threw Camp Quality into the ring. From there, the duo spread the word and were left stunned by the response. An auction will take place on 14 February –

Valentine’s Day – for an all-inclusive wedding package valued at more than $45,000. In a charity first, 100% of the proceeds from the final bid will be donated to Camp Quality. The wedding date is set for 20 July. “We’ve been blown away by the support from vendors, so many people have been donating their time and services,” Mr King said. “Whoever gets it will be the only couple in Australia to get married by two Montys, presumably ever.” Mr Haron added the funds raised would help children going through a difficult time on their cancer journey. Camp Quality offers kids and their families a vital break to strengthen their wellbeing and boost their support networks. It also provides a range of innovative programs and services at home, the hospital, and school. “The money raised in the auction will help to put a lot of smiles on a lot of kids’ faces,” Mr Haron said. news Museum’s push for new home Maitland Regional Museum does not imagine a place filled with dusty glass cases full of stuffed animals. Rather, it wants a potential new home to use technology to teach, inspire and tell the city’s stories. The museum has pinned its hopes on the vacant lands office in East Maitland after the quest for a more suitable location hit a snag. An application for a Regional Cultural Fund grant to purchase the old Maitland Mercury building in High Street, Maitland, was knocked back earlier this month. However, the state government is in discussions with Maitland council about the possibility of handing over the lands office to the community. The museum’s committee will now meet with the council in early February.

President Janece McDonald said its vision had received incredible support. “[We’ve had] a huge number of letters of support and we are continually being stopped in the street and supermarkets and asked by members of the public about our progress and given words of encouragement,” she said. “Our vision is to create a museum that explores and displays Maitland’s history, built and natural environments, and science and technology in a vibrant cultural hub.” The museum views the lands office as the ideal site for a number of reasons. Some of these include its proximity to the Melbourne Street precinct; car and bus parking availability; highly visible location; park and picnic facilities nearby; and its status as an established

heritage hub. Ms McDonald said the site would bring like-minded groups together in one space. “Having the museum at this site will allow for the creation of a museum campus, which will include other groups such as the Clothing Museum, Maitland & District Historical Society, Maitland & Beyond Family History and a U3A office,” she said. “It will be a one-stop cultural

hub benefitting our community and the many tourists and researchers who visit each group individually. “The sharing of this space makes it cost-effective for each group and will provide an income for the maintenance of the building.” Ms McDonald added two large spaces would be suitable for exhibitions and could host travelling shows from museums and art companies. - Ben Murphy

levating the feature to Group 1 status, the Newcastle Mile will also serve as a qualifier for the $1 million 2019 Ainsworth Miracle Mile at Club Menangle on Saturday 2 March, with the Newcastle winner receiving an automatic invitation. “Adding the Newcastle Mile into the Sky Racing Carnival of Miracles [in] February is a real uplift for participants and followers alike,” Harness Racing NSW Chairman, Rod Smith, said. To be hosted by Newcastle Harness Racing Club on Friday 8 February at Newcastle Paceway, the Newcastle Mile will see defending champion Majordan return to take on his own track record of 1:51.4. “He did that jogging last year and he is a lot more serious this time in,” trainer Kevin Pizzuto said. Majordan has won all of his mile

starts this season and lowered his best time to 1:49.2 when beating stablemate Tiger Tara in the Group 3 Paul Fitzpatrick Free-For-All at Menangle last October. Tiger Tara will also be aimed at the lucrative Newcastle Mile. He will race in the Hunter Cup at Melton on Saturday 2 February, a week before the Newcastle Mile. news Feedback prompts review over skate bowl’s location Newcastle council will review the location of a proposed skate bowl at South Newcastle Beach after public feedback on the latest stage of the Bathers Way project. The council stated that, while the overall project was largely supported by the community, some respondents surveyed on the Newcastle Beach – Bathers Way section expressed concern about the design of the bowl, most notably its location on the beach. Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the council was aware of the community’s feedback and would look to address it in a design review. “It’s critical that we continue to engage with people to enable us to consider what needs to be addressed so that we can deliver a project that is in the best interests of the community,” she said. “Changes in state government legislation, which came into effect in July 2018 for development in coastal areas, also means the planning pathway to approval is uncertain. “At the least, additional assessment criteria would be required, meaning the project would be under continued uncertainty for possibly another 12 months. “Given this uncertainty and the community concern, the sensible action from council is to re-examine the location of the skate bowl, with a view to potentially delivering the project within the existing footprint. “This would enable the skate bowl to proceed, but without it being located on the beach itself.” The council added the latest concerns to some aspects of the skate bowl proposal were raised at a series of drop-in sessions in December. South Newcastle Beach surfer Bernie Wilson, who has been a

vocal opponent to the proposal, attended the final session at Adamstown. He earlier questioned whether the ambitious $11 million project would put Newcastle on the map for the right reasons. It aims to transform the public domain between Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club and King Edward Park. Key features include a wider shared pathway, new stairs and seating, a kiosk, exercise equipment and improved public amenities. However, another element – the new intermediate skate bowl – planned to extend more than 20 metres onto the beach, when combined with bleach stairs. “[Council] is trying to gauge the community perception and vibe – they keep saying that it is just a concept,” he told Newcastle Weekly at the time. “It’s great that they want to do up South Newcastle Beach, but don’t put a skate bowl on the beach. “There’s an attitude of, ‘Don’t worry about the environment, as long as it looks good’ sort of thing. “The idea is that it’ll put Newcastle on the map, but will it be for all the wrong reasons?” The feedback from the drop-in sessions mirrored the results of an online survey. A total of 191 out of the 335 people surveyed reportedly opposed the project, citing the skate bowl’s protrusion onto Newcastle Beach as their main concern. The council stated that design documentation on the project could continue until July. Construction is scheduled to start in 2019/20 and take up to two years to complete. - Ben Murphy

Margaret Whitson, a Kamilaroi woman whose family originally hails from Moree, has been announced as the Waratah site’s Aboriginal

Hospital Liaison Officer. Born in Maitland, Ms Whitson boasts more than two decades of experience in meeting the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Hunter Region. As part of her role, she will be responsible for providing advocacy, education, emotional, practical, social and welfare support for patients and communities, ensuring that referrals and linkages are made to appropriate community support programs, agencies and services. Station upgrade steams ahead Plans for the significant upgrade of Wyee Station have been formally approved. Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper said the upgrade would include lifts to the platform, providing access for customers with a disability, limited mobility, parents and carers with prams, and those travelling with luggage. “The design for the station will include three new lifts, improvements to pathways from the Gorokan Road and Wyee Road car parks, and an additional accessible parking area within the Gorokan Road commuter car park,” he said. “There will also be a new kiss-andride space on Gorokan Road, a new family accessible restroom, and improved accessibility to the waiting room.” Mr Piper said a contract to design and deliver the upgrade would be awarded in the coming weeks. On-site investigations for groundwork will begin in March.

news Airport purchases land Newcastle Airport took a giant step towards the development of a $20 million Astra Aerolab Business Technology Park last week when it exercised its option to purchase land adjacent to the airport. In September 2018, NSW Deputy Premier, John Barilaro, announced an $11.7 million grant to kick off the development of the Astra Aerolab, which aims to capitalise on the existing economic strengths of the region and create more than 5,000 new jobs. The latest milestone means progress on the site can start as early as next month. Newcastle Airport chief executive Peter Cock said the land purchase was an “important part of our journey to be the airport the region deserves”. “It brings us closer to realising Newcastle Airport as a regional

Media personality and ovarian cancer advocate, Jill Emberson, was named as Newcastle’s Citizen of the Year for 2019 at the city’s Australia Day ceremony. Mrs Emberson, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2016, pushed for more research funding in the face of personal adversity. “I am humbled and honoured to be named Citizen of the Year in Newcastle and will use this precious opportunity to raise more awareness about ovarian cancer,” she said. “About 1,500 Australian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, but our survival rate has [been] stuck at about 45% for decades.

Mermaid dives deep on plastic pollution How do you draw attention to the pervasive issue of plastic pollution? Wearing a mermaid’s tail in public is one way to go about it. Amy Mellen will do whatever it takes to not only heighten awareness, but encourage people to hold themselves, and others, accountable for their actions. Having grown up in Lake Macquarie, Amy has a natural appreciation for lakes, beaches, creeks and waterways. But, these days, she’s painfully aware that something is amiss with her aquatic playground: it’s polluted, and worsening by the minute. Now aged 27 and living in Cairns – the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef – Amy is driving a fledgling project called For Earth Mermaid. She’s encouraging her

Instagram followers, who know her as Mermaid Mellen, to post about their beach cleans and litter collections so she can add them to the Australian Marine Debris Database – an initiative of the Tangaroa Blue Foundation. Whether it’s five pieces of rubbish or 5,000, Amy says she wants to hear about it. “I’m even offering to do [the data entry] for them, as it can be quite an arduous process,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “The important thing is to help [Tangaroa Blue] target problem areas, to find out where the rubbish is coming from and what we can do about it.” On a recent visit to her hometown, Amy noticed some local holiday hangouts were littered with rubbish, including Coon Island, near Swansea.

“I think the thing that upset me the most was that there were all these people there with their kids, and there were wheelie bins, but all the rubbish was around the bins, not in them,” she says. “It’s time for people to take a bit of social responsibility. “It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the scale [of the issue], but if everyone focused on their little spot they visit, it would make a huge impact.” Amy is working on building a website for people to follow her journey. Although activity booklets, training and support are provided, the mentor experience is completely mentee-guided: some weeks Mrs Beever says they’ll chat over cards or a board game, other weeks she might help the student tidy up their resume and look for job opportunities. Find fauna in your backyard Do you have a bandicoot out the back? What about a wallaby near Wollombi? The Hunter Region Landcare Network is offering residents the chance to discover what wildlife lives in their local bushland. Landcare will join forces with the Office of Environment and Heritage to host three hands-on workshops in East Maitland, Greta and the Upper Hunter. The workshops are part of a citizen science project, which aims to detect, identify and record native and feral species through infrared cameras. Species will be collated and published to create

a picture of the biodiversity in the region and encourage better conservation. Lower and Mid-Hunter Landcare Coordinator, Stacy Mail, says the project is a great opportunity to discover what native species are using the sites and how to protect them. “Of course, we are hoping to find the presence of threatened species, but sometimes knowing you have a pest on-site can explain the lack of native species,” she says. Video footage captured on site will be sorted and tagged using a crowdsourcing platform known as DigiVol. It is an initiative of the Australian Museum, in partnership with the Atlas of Living Australia. Volunteers will be able to view relevant footage and label wildlife as it appears on screen. “The ability to get digital volunteers really changes data processing time; what might have taken one person days can now be completed by multiple people, all over the country, in one day,” Ms Mail adds. Project handed funds for frogs A $300,000 grant will fund a project that aims to help secure the survival of threatened Australian frogs. The state government’s Saving our Species grant has been awarded to a research team headed by professor Michael Mahony at the University of Newcastle. Professor Mahony said the project would secure the long-term survival of five threatened frogs in NSW. “We aim to develop a comprehensive understanding of the threats to these native frogs in order to develop and apply successful management,” he said. The applied research project is hosted by the University of Newcastle, in partnerships with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and nongovernment environmental organisations. It also involves significant engagement with citizen science. The Saving our Species grant program has invested more than $100 million over five years to secure the future of threatened plants and animals.

news Interactive artwork chugs into space as tribute to past It’s deemed a fitting tribute to The Station’s iconic space. A new public artwork has been placed on permanent display at the former Newcastle station. Named The Flyer, the interactive installation is an interpretation of the Newcastle Flyer express steam train that ran between Newcastle and Sydney from 1929 until 1970. The artwork contains seating, ambient lighting and sound-based activities for children, families and rail enthusiasts to enjoy. It was created by Artscape, which invested more than 500 hours into the design process, while it took more than 1,000 hours to fabricate and assemble. The artist behind the project, David Cianci, said his team scoured transport records and spoke to

people familiar with the Newcastle Flyer service for inspiration. “We wanted to draw out the essence of the mighty 38 Class locomotive,” he said. “I focused on the train’s iconic face and the pinstriped geometries that evoke flow and speed to recreate the experience of riding a train. “As a city that grew from steel and steam, I knew from the outset that steel was the right media for our project. “While our artwork weighs just under eight tonnes, it is a lightweight in comparison to the locomotive itself, which weighed more than 200 tonnes. “It’s a fitting tribute to the city’s past, and I’m honoured to be the artist charged with creating it for the people of Newcastle to enjoy.”

World’s best to land in Redhead Some of the world’s best junior surfers will converge on Redhead Beach for Lake Macquarie’s first World Surf League event. With a total of $10,000 in prize money up for grabs, the Lake Mac City Pro Junior has attracted about 100 male and female competitors, aged 18 and under, to the event on 9 and 10 February. Lake Mac City Pro Junior wildcard, Connor Lee, said he was looking forward to the challenge so close to home. “I’m pretty excited – it’s a good feeling to have a pro junior level contest at your home break,” he said. “It might give me a little bit of an advantage knowing that I surf at this place every single day.” The Lake Mac City Pro Junior is the only Australasian WSL Pro Junior event to offer equal prize money for both male and female competitors. Ex-Wiggle keeps on grooving It’s a face anyone in their twenties would instantly recognise. Whilst he still does some behind-the-scenes work with The Wiggles, Murray Cook – the original Red Wiggle – is these days better known as Sydney band The Soul Movers’ guitarist. “It’s funny, the twenty-somethings often spot

The band, a mainstay in Newcastle, will return in February for two gigs to kick off their Bona Fide tour: one at The Wickham Park Hotel on Saturday 9 February, and the other at The Grand Junction Hotel in Maitland the following day.

Cook says he enjoys touring to Newcastle, and even witnessed a marriage proposal at one of their Maitland shows once. “It was pretty special,” he says. “For a musician, [Newcastle] is a really great scene: the crowds and the people who run the venues are fantastic.” As a band, The Soul Movers have been around for a decade. Cook joined about four years ago, relishing the chance to hone his songwriting skills. Bona Fide is the group’s third album, and, according to lead singer Lizzie Mack, is the first one to truly capture their “real sound”, best described as old-school soul and rock ‘n’ roll. The album was recorded at seven historic studios across the USA, including FAME Studios, Royal Studios, Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, and Sun Studio, to name a few. Always treat army grub late in the afternoon when they rise to the surface and use on short lawn so the product penetrates the roots. Reapply in 10 days. It will help to apply Seasol regularly to stimulate root growth to damaged areas. February is also a good time to give lawns a boost before the weather changes in autumn. Apply lawn fertiliser lightly and water in well to avoid burning. There wouldn’t be many citrus trees in our gardens that haven’t been affected by citrus leaf miner. My little lime tree, covered in fruit, is also covered in leaf miner, which presents as a tracing on the leaf, causing it to curl. This insect gets under the skin of the leaf and was once treated with systemic sprays such as Rogor and Lebaycid, now no longer available to the home gardener. The only products available to the home gardener now are eco-friendly and require constant, regular applications. I have suggested not to prune back the new growth that is under attack, as pruning will produce new growth, which may still be susceptible. I am waiting until the heat is over before cutting as any new growth may get burnt. Now, briefly to roses – looking sad, or, at least mine are; they need to be sprayed with a good rose fungicide, pruned by one-third and fed with poultry manure, followed in a couple of weeks with rose food.

Unbelievable: tomorrow is February already and that means diligence in the garden. The prolonged heat and lack of rain this summer has stimulated many problems, such as citrus leaf miner, army grub, scale, spider mite, fungal diseases and mealy bug, which has just reared its ugly white head. Where to begin with advice? Perhaps solving the mealy bug problem as it is developing so quickly and will continue to do so as it enjoys the humidity. This insect hides under foliage on stems and deep down in the plant – best described as flour on legs! I was horrified over the long weekend when a diligent staff member removed a beautiful white impatiens from the nursery to check with me what to spray it with – my answer was the green bin outside! I couldn’t risk it contaminating other plants. I have never seen mealy bug on impatiens before, especially under our watchful eyes: closed on Saturday, noticed on Sunday – that’s how quickly it invaded. Check potted plants, gardenias and even agapanthus in your garden, cut off dead flower stems on aggies and peer into the base where the shoots arise. The solution: a mixture of white oil and malathon, sprayed every 10 days. Sure, try eco products if you prefer, but be warned: this insect is a destroyer. The next most urgent problem is returning from holidays to a dead lawn. Heat may not be the culprit, as army grub has had a ball eating roots of grass leaving brown patches. In some cases, there’s no longer any lawn left at all. Apply the wet mat test overnight to distinguish between pest and disease. Turn it over early in the morning and you should see which pest is eating the grass and killing off roots. The solutions are many, but it is

GARDENING I am definitely not a green thumb. However, I enjoy getting outside and watching our veggie patch grow. I love knowing that we can create positive habits by grabbing fruit and vegetables straight from our garden to add to our plates.

MY FAMILY I love spending time with my family and friends, and get social as much as I can. I have a gorgeous son, Arthur, who is my little sidekick, and is a pleasure to be around. Quite often our time together involves building blocks (and knocking them down), playing dinosaurs, being robots, reading a book or watching a movie.

I am fortunate to live a short distance from the beautiful Warners Bay Esplanade, which is one of my favourite places. We generally travel around the lake on our push scooters, have a play in the new playground, and sometimes grab a sneaky coffee.
